I will start my column this month with congratulations to our nation on its fiftyninth (59 ) year of Independence and its fourth (4 ) year as a Republic My sincere wish is that we continue to help build our nation and carry it from strength to strength in the same peaceful, harmonious and industrious manner that we have exhibited over the last 59 years, and more. th th

Happy Independence Barbados!!!

On that note I look forward to serving you on Independence Day at the Commodore’s Rum Punch party Please remember that it lasts for approximately one hour or until we run aground of the stocks of free rum punch.

I would now like to turn my attention to our visiting members, most of whom have had a relationship with our Club for many, many years. Welcome back. We wish you an enjoyable stay with us, as well as on our island, away from the cold and, maybe, bitter winter.

We have received the recent order of beach chairs and tables and now we can accommodate many more persons on the beach. Please be considerate in your reservation of the chairs and tables

We have been advised that the security arms are in transit. Hopefully we will receive these shortly. We are close to a final design and location for these security arms that will ensure that there are no long, backed up lines of traffic into the street Once we have finalized the details we will inform you of the plans.

I wish to advise the proposers and seconders of visiting members that they must be present to introduce their visiting members to the Club. The are required to be in attendance when their visiting members are being processed for their membership.

As we approach our Christmas season the Club will be hosting various private events for members, companies and non-members. We will ensure that you, our members, are not unduly inconvenienced, but we also ask for your understanding and support as these events allow us to earn some much needed revenue to assist with the operations and maintenance of the Club.

Our Entertainment Sub-committee will keep you informed on the activities planned for members during the season. They have planned great activities for the next few weeks and we look forward to your support

In closing, I wish you a great upcoming month of activities, fun, relaxation and your choice of sporting activities

Presentation of Sailing Awards

The Club held its Annual Presentation of Sailing Awards on Friday, 21st November. Sailors and Yacht Club staff gathered to celebrate the outstanding performances in both the Dinghy and Offshore Regattas held throughout the sailing season The evening also provided the opportunity to recognise and thank all our valued sponsors, including Harris Paints, a proud sponsor for the last 41 years, Massy Stores, formerly SuperCentre, sponsoring for 35 years, Lucky Horseshoe, a sponsor for the last 26 years; and our more recent sponsors, Stansfeld Scott and the Parker Family.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Dr. A.W. Trieloff Memorial Trophy for Youth Sailing. The Trophy is awarded annually to the junior sailor who has, in the eyes of the Race Committee and Officials, stood out for his or her overall improvement, excellent attitude and all-round sportsmanship throughout the year

This year the Trophy was awarded to Aaron Stewart. Aaron began his sailing career as a shy, yet determined young sailor and he has shown remarkable dedication and perseverance ever since, never giving up regardless of the outcome He has grown into a confident Junior Instructor in Training who consistently encourages our new young sailors, and his great teamwork, positive attitude and willingness to jump in and help at any opportunity have inspired us all.

“Equally meaningful are the relationships, resilience, and sense of purpose that sailing has given me. I’m deeply grateful to thecoaches, teammates, partners, andsupporterswhopushedmebeyondwhatIthoughtwaspossible”

“Sarah Douglas perfectly embodies the spirit of sailing, having demonstrated discipline and perseverance throughout her career,”saidFionaCochrane,ChairofSailCanada’sBoardofDirectors.“Sarahhasalsodemonstratedthepowerofinclusion, diversity, and equity in our sport, and she remains an idol for the next generation of sailors from all different regions, backgrounds, and origins. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff, and the entire Sail Canada community, I would like to thank Sarah for the legacy she leaves to the sport in our country and the reputation of Canadian sailing around the world, andIwishherthebestofluckinherfutureendeavours.”

Born in Burlington, Ontario, Sarah started sailing in the Optimist class at the age of 7 on the island of Barbados, taking part in North American and World Championships before the age of 15.

After outgrowing the boat, Sarah returned to Canada and transitioned to the Laser Radial class (now called ILCA 6). From there, she quickly became one of the top youth sailors in Canada, representing the country at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.

After being away from competition and coaching athletes for two years, her dream to compete at the Olympics was rekindled in 2014 by a Canadian medalist who inspired Sarah to get back into the game and pursue her goal of winning an Olympic medal.

With a sailing career spanning over a decade, Sarah has represented Canada at multiple international competitions and World Championships. She won a gold medal at the 2022 World Sailing World Cup held during the Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta, therefore coming up with her first podium finish at a World Sailing competition and, by the same token, her first career gold medal. One year later, she won another gold medal at the 2023 World Sailing World Cup held during French Olympic Week She also won gold and silver medals, respectively, at the Lima 2019 and Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, in addition to taking the 6th and 8th positions, respectively, at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Sarah Douglas won Sail Canada’s Rolex Sailor of the Year Award twice (2019 and 2020-2021) as well as Sail Canada Gallagher Skippers’ Plan Athlete of the Year Award six years in a row, from 2018 to 2024.

A new sailing adventure

In September of 2026, she will be one of the invited skippers for the inaugural edition of the New York Yacht Club Women’s International Championship in fleet of 37-foot IC37 keelboats.

“Even though this chapter is ending, my connection to the sport is not,” said Sarah Douglas. “I’m excited to continue my role as Athlete Director on Sail Canada’s Board of Directors, to explore new opportunities in sports marketing, and to take on a new kind of challenge as I build a team to compete in the 2026 New York Yacht Club Women’s International Championship.”

“This transition isn’t a goodbye; it’s a new direction And I’m stepping into it with gratitude and a lot of excitement for what’s ahead.”
