On ne pouvait pas ouvrir la saison sans accueillir une femme… La trompettiste française la plus en vue du moment, Airelle Besson lance la 15ème édition du Marni Jazz Festival en duo avec Vincent Segal. Honneur ensuite à la trompette belge avec ‘nos’ musiciens de talent : Laurent Blondiau, Greg Houben et Jean-Paul Estievenart nous offrent chacun la primeur d’un nouveau projet, Bert Joris et ses compositions promet un concert de haut standing en quartet. Tous se sont engagés pour que chaque soirée soit unique ! Cerise sur le gâteau et soirée de clôture festive à l’occasion des 40 ans du label Igloo : on annonce un double concert, des invités et un DJ set. Amateurs de photo argentique et de grandes figures du jazz, l’expo « Jazz en Coulisses » est faire pour vous, elle déploie des portraits réalisés backstage entre 1985 et 1995 par Eric Mannaerts.

Het seizoen openen zonder een vrouwelijke gast te verwelkomen was eenvoudigweg ondenkbaar… We vroegen dan ook aan de op dit moment meest gewaardeerde Franse trompetspeelster, Airelle Besson, om in een duo met Vincent Segal, de 15de editie van het Marni Jazz Festival te openen. Daarna krijgen grote trompettisten van bij ons vrij spel: Laurent Blondiau, Greg Houben en Jean-Paul Estiévenart vergasten ons, elk op hun beurt, met de primeur van een totaal nieuw project. Bert Joris staat, met zijn composities en kwartet, in voor een concert van hoog niveau. Al onze gasten tekenden voor een unieke reeks muzikale ervaringen! De kers op de taart is de feestelijke afsluiter ter gelegenheid van het 40-jarige bestaan van het label Igloo, met op het programma : een dubbel concert, enkele onverwachte gasten en een dj set. Liefhebbers van analoge fotografie en van befaamde jazzfiguren kunnen hun hart ophalen in de tentoonstelling « Jazz en Coulisses » met een reeks van tussen 1985 en 1995 door Eric Mannaerts backstage genomen foto’s.

We could not open the season without welcoming a woman… Airelle Besson, the most prominent French trumpet player of the moment, is launching the 15th edition of the Marni Jazz Festival together with Vincent Segal.

Added to which we pay tribute to the Belgian trumpet with ‘our’ talented musicians: Laurent Blondiau, Greg Houben and Jean-Paul Estievenart, each of whom offers us the honour of a brand new project, Bert Joris and his compositions promise us a top quality concert by a quartet. Everyone is committed to ensuring that each evening is unique!

And the icing on the cake for the final evening of the festival and the 40th anniversary of the Igloo label: a double concert, guests and a DJ set. Lovers of analogue photography and big names in the world of jazz – the ‘Jazz en Coulisses’ exhibition is for you. It features portraits by Eric Mannaerts taken backstage between 1985 and 1995.

Un duo français de prestige réunissant la brillante trompettiste et l’incontournable violoncelliste, pour un alliage de vent et de cordes qui touche la grâce. Airelle Besson n’en finit plus de faire rayonner son incroyable talent, multipliant les projets artistiques passionnants et variés. Pour témoigner de son grand engouement pour les cordes, elle ne pouvait former de binôme plus parfait qu’avec le nomade et multicarte Vincent Segal.

Véritable magicien du classique au jazz, des musiques du monde au contemporain en passant par la chanson, il affiche un parcours international exceptionnel. La portée onirique de son jeu s’entremêle à celui de la jazz lady dans un répertoire où alternent des compositions de l’un et de l’autre, agrémenté de quelques reprises flamboyantes comme l’enivrante valse d’« Elsa » de Bill Evans. Haar grote voorliefde voor snaarinstrumenten kon ze niet beter uiten dan door een volmaakt duo te vormen met de polyvalente muzikale nomade, Vincent Segal. Hij is dan ook van alle markten thuis en schakelt moeiteloos over van klassieke muziek naar jazz en van wereldmuziek naar hedendaagse muziek, zonder hierbij het chanson te vergeten. De dromerige kwaliteiten van zijn spel vermengen zich perfect met de stijl van de jazz lady. Hun repertoire laat beurtelings composities van de ene en van de andere horen. JEAN-PAUL ESTIEVENART QUINTET (BE-FR) Première FR Pour ce nouveau quintet, Jean-Paul Estiévenart a réuni de fortes personnalités autour de nouvelles

compositions. On y retrouve Antoine Pierre à la batterie, complice de longue date. Pour l’inspiration et les échappées fantasques, qui de mieux au piano que Nicolas Andrioli ? À la contrebasse, Nic Thys au son très acoustique et au jeu profond. Enfin, un électron libre de la scène française secoue cette belle équipe de musiciens et amis de longue date. A la guitare, Romain Pilon, son boisé et connaissance sans faille de la tradition. “Je veux jouer avec des musiciens sans limites. Je veux pouvoir tout écrire et être certain que ça va sonner.” Jean-Paul écrit une musique lyrique - qui lui ressemble - une musique rouge, énergique, qui laissera surtout une place immense à l’improvisation.

In dit kersverse kwintet verenigt Jean-Paul Estiévenart heel wat sterke persoonlijkheden rond een aantal nieuwe composities. Achter de drums treffen we Antoine Pierre aan, een oude bekende, terwijl pianist Nicolas Andrioli voor de nodige inspiratie en bezieling zorgt. Ook contrabasspeler Nic Thys is van de partij, een ideale keuze omwille van zijn uitgelezen akoestische klank en doorvoelde vertolkingen. Tot slot zorgt een vrijgevochten muzikale geest uit Frankrijk voor de nodige opschudding binnen dit briljante team van oude getrouwen. Gitarist Romain Pilon is gekend voor zijn warme klanken en feilloze kennis van de traditie. “Ik wil spelen met muzikanten zonder grenzen. Ik wil alle muziek kunnen componeren en zeker zijn dat het goed zal klinken”. Jean Paul componeert lyrische muziek – helemaal in overeenstemming met zijn temperament – en laat in zijn sprankelende en energieke muziek vooral veel ruimte voor improvisatie.

For this new quintet, Jean-Paul Estiévenart has brought together some strong musicians to play new compositions. One of his long-term accomplices, Antoine Pierre on drums. For inspiration and flights of fancy, who better than Nicolas Andrioli on piano? Nic Thys on double base adds his own inimitable highly acoustic and deep sounds. And finally, a free spirit on the French scene causes creative turbulence within this fantastic team of musicians and long-time friends - Romain Pilon on guitar, with his woody sound and seamless knowledge of his art. “I want to play with musicians who know no bounds. I want to be able to write everything and be certain that it will sound good.” Jean-Paul writes lyrical music – in his own image - a red, energetic music, which leaves lots of room for improvisation.

HOUBEN & SON (BE) Première FR Steve et Greg Houben décident de lever le voile sur leur artisanat familial. Ils se souviennent de leur

passé et unissent leur souffle. L’un voulait être poète et l’autre comédien, mais ici l’affaire prend l’allure d‘une musique de jazz, simple dans sa forme et riche de ses émotions. Chaque instant est une nouvelle porte qui s’ouvre sur un espace qui fait apparaître des silences fabuleux de sel, de sable ou de neige, et sous d’étranges nébuleuses sonores, une ancienne chanson de solitude. Il fait aussi entendre les mots du monde qui racontent le quotidien des métiers, des soucis, des amours. Alors le cuivre se mêle au bois et entame une cantate à deux voix mixtes, puis arrive un piano, tambours et cymbales également jetés dans la fournaise et emmenés par la contrebasse qui poursuit, dans son mouvement perpétuel, sa fabuleuse marche sur la ligne du temps !

Steve en Greg Houben gunnen ons een blik in hun ambachtelijke interne keuken en blazen samen nieuw leven in hun gedeeld verleden. De ene wilde dichter worden, de andere zag zich eerder als acteur… Hier krijgt hun samenwerking evenwel de vorm van een jazzmelodie, eenvoudig van vorm en rijk van emotie. Elk moment is als een nieuwe deur die opengaat om een ruimte te onthullen vol fabelachtige zilte, zanderige of ondergesneeuwde stiltes. Doorheen vreemde nevelige klanken weerklinkt een oud lied van eenzaamheid. Ook wereldse zaken en het dagelijkse leven schemeren erin door: het vak, de zorgen en de liefde. Dan vermengen koper- en houtinstrumenten zich en wordt een cantate aangevat met twee gemengde stemmen. Vervolgens weerklinkt de piano, terwijl trommels en cymbalen alles in vuur en vlam zetten. Dit alles onder begeleiding van een locomotief van een contrabas die instaat voor het onafgebroken ritme!

Steve and Greg Houben have decided to unveil their family talents. They have looked back at their history and combined their enviable talents. One wanted to be a poet and the other an actor, but what they do here bears a greater resemblance to jazz. Simple in form and rich in emotion. At every instant, a new door opens onto a space that reveals fabulous silences that feel like salt, sand or snow under strange resonant nebulae, an old song of solitude. Their magic enables us to hear the words of the world that tell the story of everyday lives, worries, loves. Then brass joins up with wood and begins a cantata for two voices, joined by a piano, drums and cymbals that are also thrown into the furnace and led by the double bass which pursues its fabulous walk on the timeline in a state of perpetual movement!

Le fougueux Laurent Blondiau nous offre une première pour le Marni Jazz Festival ! Artiste sans frontières, toujours avide de renouvellement, il saisit la carte blanche à pleines mains et provoque les rencontres.

Avec Gabor Gado, guitariste singulier, magnifique de profondeur et d’émotion, emmenant loin la musique de ses racines hongroises. Avec le contrebassiste français Sébastien Boisseau et le jeune batteur du Collectif Mâäk, Samuel Ber. Une réunion de musiciens complices proposant un mix de compositions créés pour l’occasion, agrémenté de quelques morceaux du duo aménagés. Une musique à la fois très composée et écrite, débordant d’indispensable liberté ! Comme à l’accoutumée, le trompettiste nous promet aussi quelques fameux invités surprise qui laissent présager un véritable feu d’artifice sur scène.

Gabor Gado, een uitnemende gitarist die garant staat voor een diep doorvoelde vertolking exploreert zijn Hongaarse muzikale wortels in het aangename gezelschap van de Franse contrabasspeler Sébastien Boisseau en van Samuel Ber, de jonge drummer van het Collectif Mâäk. Deze ontmoeting van muzikanten op dezelfde golflengte levert een mix op van voor de gelegenheid gecreëerde composities en enkele bewerkte nummers van het duo. Hun muziek is uiterst gecomponeerd, maar laat tegelijkertijd heel wat ruimte aan de zo noodzakelijke vrijheid! Zoals gewoonlijk zal de trompettist ook enkele onverwachte beroemde gasten opvoeren die zullen instaan voor een explosie van vuurwerk op het podium.

C’est en 1978, dans un contexte d’effervescence culturelle et artistique que naît le label Igloo, fruit de la rencontre de passionnés et défenseurs de la création musicale singulière. En 2008, Igloo célébrait ses 30 ans au Marni, nous l’accueillons à nouveau 10 ans plus tard, pour une soirée inédite autour de la jeune génération. Car avec un catalogue proche des 400 références, le label bruxellois peut se targuer d’avoir contribué à la richesse du jazz en Belgique. On écoutera d’abord le trio du trompettiste le plus en vogue du moment, Jean-Paul Estiévenart, suivi de ceux que l’on surnomme les « Magnificent Seven » de la jeune scène du jazz : le LG Jazz Collective accompagnés d’un invité surprise d’exception. La soirée se prolongera dans le bar au rythme d’un DJ-set.

In 2008 vierde Igloo zijn 30-jarige bestaan in het Marni Theater, vandaag, tien jaar later, verwelkomen we het label opnieuw voor een hoogst originele avond rond aankomende talent. Met een catalogus van om en bij de 400 referenties, mag het Brusselse label trots terugblikken op zijn indrukwekkende bijdrage aan de bloei van de Belgische jazz. Eerst luisteren we naar het trio van de momenteel bijzonder gewaardeerde trompettist Jean-Paul Estiévenart. Dan volgt een groep uit de jonge jazzscène, het LG Jazz Collective, ook gekend als de « Magnificent Seven », vergezeld van een onverwachte en bijzondere gast. De avond wordt voortgezet in de bar op het ritme van een dj-set.

With a repertoire of almost 400 titles, this Brussels label prides itself on having made a considerable contribution to the wealth of jazz in Belgium. « JAZZ EN COULISSES » est une exposition en hommage au photographe Eric Mannaerts. elle présente une trentaine de tirages argentiques vintages faits en chambre noire. Des photographies inédites des plus grands jazzmen du monde, venus en tournée européenne entre 1985 et 1995, une décennie peu documentée en photo. On pourra voir des figures légendaires comme Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Cab Calloway, Oscar Peterson, Stephane Grappelli, Art Blakey, Ahmad Jamal, Stan Getz, Astor Piazzolla, et Pat Metheny,… Les portraits carrés de ces figures légendaires captent presque tous le regard des musiciens, souvent leurs sourires, parfois leurs complicités.

« JAZZ EN COULISSES » brengt een eerbetoon aan fotograaf Eric Mannaerts. De tentoonstelling onthult een dertigtal analoge vintagefoto’s recht uit de donkere kamer. Het gaat hier om nooit geziene foto’s van de grootste jazzmen ter wereld, muzikanten die op Europese tournee waren tussen 1985 et 1995, op fotografisch vlak een weinig gedocumenteerd decennium. We staan er oog in oog met legendarische figuren zoals Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Cab Calloway, Oscar Peterson, Stephane Grappelli, Art Blakey, Ahmad Jamal, Stan Getz, Astor Piazzolla, en Pat Metheny,… De vierkante portretten van deze legendarische figuren leggen bijna allemaal de blik of de glimlach van de muzikanten vast en soms ook hun onderlinge verstandhouding.

Unpublished photographs of the greatest jazzmen in the world, who toured Europe between 1985 and 1995; a decade of little documented photography. Includes photos of legendary names such as Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Cab Calloway, Oscar Peterson, Stephane Grappelli, Art Blakey, Ahmad Jamal, Stan Getz, Astor Piazzolla, and Pat Metheny. Almost all the square portraits of these legendary personalities capture the special look of the musicians, their smiles and the aura of complicity around them.

De Trappisten van Westmalle Al meer dan 200 jaar kiezen de Trappisten van Westmalle voor een leven van gebed en arbeid.

Trouw aan de regel van Sint Benedictus, zorgen ze zelf voor hun levensonderhoud. Daarom is er binnen de muren van de trappistenabdij een boerderij, een kaasmakerij en een brouwerij.

De inkomsten van de brouwerij gebruiken ze om te herinvesteren in de brouwerij, om de eigen en andere trappistengemeenschappen te ondersteunen en om te schenken aan caritatieve projecten.

Bieren met traditie en karakter

Les Trappistes de Westmalle Depuis plus de deux siècles, les moines Trappistes de Westmalle consacrent leur vie à la prière et au travail. Fidèles à la règle de Saint Benoît, ils subviennent eux-mêmes à leurs besoins. C’est pourquoi les murs de l’abbaye abritent une ferme, une fromagerie ainsi qu’une brasserie.

Les revenus générés par la brasserie sont réinvestis dans la modernisation des infrastructures et de l’équipement mais permettent également de soutenir les communautés de moines et d’organiser des projets caritatifs.

Tradition et caractère affirmé Une eau pure, de l’orge maltée, du sucre, de vrais cônes de houblon, de la levure cultivée sur place… et, bien entendu, une recette traditionnelle mise au point par les moines. Tels sont les ingrédients de la Dubbel et Tripel de Westmalle.

For over 200 years, the Trappist monks of Westmalle have been choosing to live a life of prayer and work. True to the Rule of Saint Benedict, they ensure their own means of sustenance. For this reason, there is a farm, a cheese dairy and a brewery inside the walls of the Trappist abbey.

The brewery’s income is used to make the necessary reinvestments in the brewery, to support the own and other Trappist communities and to carry out charity work.

Tradition and a distinct character Pure water, barley malt, sugar, real hops, homemade yeast, and of course, a traditional recipe developed by the monks. That’s the secret of the Dubbel and Tripel of Westmalle.
