L’effervescence de la capitale du jazz coule le long des murs, inonde les rues et réchauffe les corps engourdis par le froid.

La jungle de concerts est dense, aussi laissezvous dériver le long du Maelbeek, et faites escale au gré de vos envies. Quatorze concerts, trois salles, plus de soixante artistes, une exposition et de quoi régaler vos enfants : un déluge de saveurs !

Nouveau design, solaire, mais une recette qui reste la même : délicieux cocktail de rencontres inédites, de nouveautés internationales et toujours un intérêt certain pour la fine fleur locale !

EN In Brussels, in January, you can hear the roar of trumpets, the growl of the guitar and the rumbling of the drums. The city becomes radiant, wild and unpredictable. The effervescence of this jazz capital oozes out of the walls, filling the streets and warming bodies numb from the cold.

There is a dense jungle of concerts, which means you can drift along Maelbeek, and stop whenever you wish. Fourteen concerts, three venues, more than sixty artists, an exhibition and plenty to keep the children happy: there is something for everyone!

FR Chanteuse, pianiste, auteure, compositrice, élevée sur les routes et sur les traces d’un père musicien, sa musique, une espèce de jazz folk pop élégante, aurait mystérieusement vu le jour entre Paris, New York et Erevan. Pianiste au toucher délicat, de solide formation classique, diplômée de l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, c’est en quittant Paris pour New York en 2005 que Macha Gharibian se révèle à ellemême. Guidée par Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane à la School for Improvisational Music, elle commence à écrire et créer son univers, une musique construite par ses voyages, ses désirs, ses racines et tout ce qui a fait grandir la jeune femme partagée entre trois cultures : arménienne de ses ancêtres, parisienne de coeur et new-yorkaise d’adoption.

Armeense omwille van haar voorouders, de Franse vanwege haar liefde voor Parijs, en de Amerikaanse als New yorker in hart en ziel. Als festivalopener presenteert ze in avant-première haar derde album « Joy Ascencion », nog vóór de officiële lancering ervan eind januari.

EN She’s a singer, pianist, author, composer, raised on the streets and following in the footsteps of her musician father. Her music, a sort of elegant jazz folk pop mix, has mysteriously seen the light of day somewhere between Paris, New York and Erevan. A pianist with a delicate touch, with a classical background, it was only upon leaving Paris for New York in 2005 that Macha Gharibian found herself. Guided by Ralph Alessi, Uri Caine, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane at the School for Improvisational Music, she started to write and create her universe, music made up of her travels, her desires, her roots and everything that characterises this young woman who grew up divided between three cultures: Armenian ancestors, a Parisian heart and a New Yorker by adoption. FR Sal La Rocca est incontestablement un des meilleurs contrebassistes du pays et plus encore.

Celui qui a accompagné Steve Grossman et Lee Konitz entre autres a eu nombre de musiciens fantastiques à ses côtés. Le gaillard au bandana sait s’entourer : une rythmique de rêve avec Jeroen van Herzeele au sax et Lieven Venken à la batterie. Au Wurlitzer, Pascal Mohy amène une fraîcheur et un groove uniques.

La musique est libertaire, entre standards et compositions, l’influence de Coltrane transparaît.

Folie, liberté, la cohésion est visible et la musique est bonne. Ça se voit, ça s’entend, ça se sent.

Pour le River Jazz, Sal La Rocca invite le trompettiste Stéphane Belmondo. L’occasion pour le 4tet de magnifier encore davantage leur musique.

Français, se retrouvent autour d’un projet inédit, un piano duo. Igor Gehenot s’est progressivement imposé comme un talent majeur sur la scène belge et européenne. Sideman très demandé depuis ses débuts, ce jeune pianiste prometteur se révèle être un excellent leader, comme en témoigne sa récente récompense aux Octaves du Jazz 2018 avec son quartet, DELTA. De son côté, Amaury Faye est l’un des fers de lance du nouveau jazz français. Les très nombreuses récompenses qu’il a reçues confirment sa réputation d’improvisateur et de compositeur, et ses albums ont tous été acclamés par la critique. C’est une même quête mélodique, une sensibilité aiguisée, une maîtrise technique, et finalement une affinité artistique et humaine qui rapprochent définitivement ces pianistes. Une rencontre au sommet à ne pas manquer !

Un duo intime sur un répertoire de compositions personnelles et de reprises de titres gorgés de soul music (Al Jarreau, Jimmy Hendrix…).

FR Or Bareket est l’un des bassistes les plus demandés de sa génération, depuis son arrivée à New York il y a près de dix ans. Sa dextérité rythmique, son lyrisme fluide, et son sens du rythme entraînant en ont fait un sideman recherché sur la scène mondiale. D’abord collaborateur de nombreux projets, il a su naturellement se développer en tant que compositeur et diriger ses propres groupes. Il s’est forgé une esthétique personnelle cohérente, inspirée du folklore de ses ancêtres (ses grandsparents sont originaires de Tanger, de Bagdad, de Buenos Aires et d’Europe de l’Est), qu’il allie joyeusement avec sa connaissance approfondie du jazz et de la musique classique occidentale.

L’album « 33 » est la suite de « OB1 » dont les débuts ont été admirables, notamment en 2018 lors du River Jazz Festival !

EN Or Bareket is still one of the greatest bass players of his generation, since his arrival in New York six years ago. His rhythmic dexterity, his fluid lyricism and his sense of rhythm all turn him into a highly demanded sideman on the world stage.

At first a collaborator on many projects, he knew how to develop naturally as a composer and manage his own groups. He forged his own coherent personal aesthetic, inspired by folklore from his ancestors (his grandparents are from Tangier, Baghdad, Buenos Aires and Eastern Europe), which he joyfully combines with his profound knowledge of jazz and classical Western music. The album “33” is a sequel to “OB1”, which had an admirable debut, especially in 2018 at the River Jazz Festival!

FR Après plusieurs projets personnels, Quentin Dujardin & Didier Laloy ont choisi d’écrire ensemble la musique d’un album qui leur ressemble terriblement. Les deux artistes restent inclassables de par leur musique et leur démarche originale à la lisière du jazz, du classique, du trad ou encore des musiques de film. Leur rencontre est un moment qu’ils attendaient depuis longtemps. Un dialogue entre l’eau et le feu. Ce disque restera comme un retour aux sources dans la discographie des deux artistes: « Nous croyons en ce mouvement perpétuel de la création. Quelle joie immense que de partager nos musiques ! L’important reste l’enrichissement personnel et la liberté que nous retirons chacun de nos prises de risque. Ce projet en est une magnifique. »

Both artists cannot be classified based on their music and their original approach which borders on jazz, classical, traditional and even film music.

FR Ces histoires de talents d’exception découverts dès leur plus jeune âge sont sans doute de mise dans le cas du violoniste Alexandre Cavaliere. A 12 ans, il s’impose au violon aux Django d’Or, à Bruxelles. Il y fait grande impression sur Didier Lockwood et Babik Reinhardt qui l’invitent directement à Paris, insufflant à sa carrière un départ fulgurant.

Ensuite, tout s’enchaîne naturellement. Alexandre écume les scènes internationales avec le groupe de son père et collectionne une liste impressionnante de prestations. Aujourd’hui, il nous revient magnifiquement accompagné avec un nouveau projet, qui mélange la musique manouche chère à son cœur (le gypsy jazz dans le style de Django Reinhardt) à l’idiome be-bop et le jazz moderne en passant par des influences comme Dorado Schmitt, ou encore Biréli Lagrène.

EN The classic story of an exceptional talent discovered at a young age is certainly applicable to the violinist Alexandre Cavaliere. At 12 years old, he played the violin at Django d’Or, in Brussels. He made a serious impression on Didier Lockwood and Babik Reinhardt who invited him to join them in Paris straight away, getting his career off to a brilliant start. Then, everything came naturally. Alexandre took the international stages by storm with his father’s band and built up an impressive list of performances. Il s'est également attaché à travailler avec les meilleurs musiciens de différentes cultures, de l'Inde aux Balkans, en passant par l’Afrique. Mais ce batteur est, sans doute, avant tout connu en tant que membre fondateur d’Aka Moon, l’un des groupes de jazz les plus mythiques de l'Histoire de la musique belge. Stéphane Galland a fêté son cinquantième anniversaire en 2019, mais le son qu’il crée demeure sans âge. Au fil des ans, il a développé une approche rythmique unique en liant les différentes traditions musicales dans lesquelles il a travaillé.

EN Pianist Malcolm Braff is, in fact, a living legend himself. He has already been described as the guru of the Swiss jazz scene, where he ended up as a teenager via Rio de Janeiro and Dakar, and his discography includes more than twenty albums – a couple of them on Blue Note Records. Galland and Braff started playing together a few years ago. After Braff joined Galland’s previous project “Lobi” for the live performances, and also in the international quartet “Shijin”. They decided to dig deeper into their love of rhythm and into their both organic and scientific approach to it. Together, they now revisit jazz standards like ‘Afro Blue’ and ‘Passion Dance’, while also writing their own compositions based on their unique rhythmical concepts. A unique duet, and the best way to start this journey!

FR « Je travaille comme illustrateur et, depuis la fin des années 80, j’utilise principalement la technique de la linogravure. Cela me permet d’être plus concis, de jouer avec les masses blanches et noires et ainsi de suggérer par défaut des détails dans l’image. Je trouve que ce rythme de noir et de blanc se prête bien à la musique et aux images de musiciens en pleine action, amis ou personnages connus ou inconnus, qui sont présentés dans cette exposition. Et, comme à l’écoute d’un enregistrement, l’impression d’une gravure peut réserver des bonnes surprises !

Et le tout, j’espère, avec humour et un petit parfum de swing et de jazz-musette…»

nl « Ik werk als illustrator en concentreer me, sinds het einde van de jaren 80, vooral op linosneden. Deze techniek leidt tot een soberder resultaat en laat toe te spelen met witte en zwarte vlakken om zo door leemten de details van het beeld te suggereren. Dat zwart-witritme lijkt me perfect aan te sluiten bij de muziek en bij de tentoongestelde portretten van muzikanten

in volle actie, vrienden of bekende en onbekende figuren. En, zoals bij het beluisteren van een opname, kan het afdrukken van een gravure mooie verrassingen opleveren! Humor en een subtiel parfum van swing en van jazz-musette mogen hierbij niet ontbreken … »

EN “I have been working as an illustrator and since the end of the 80s, I mostly use lino cutting techniques. This allows me to be more concise, play with white and black masses and therefore add more details to the image. I find that this rhythm of black and white goes well with music and with the images of musicians in full action, friends or well-known or unknown people, who are displayed in this exhibition. And, just like listening to a recording, the impression of a print can be filled with surprises!

Above all, I hope, it is exhibited with some humour and a little touch of swing and jazz accordion music.

From some of the mythical American figures such as John Coltrane or Duke Ellington, to national figures such as Philip Catherine, Jean-Pol presents these portraits with passion and relies on archives and video clips sometimes become extremely rare ! This special lecture will focus on Philip Catherine’s career. The conference is given in French.
