Lors de cette 14ème édition du festival, où la batterie sera à l’honneur, un concert sur deux sera une première ! Vous pourrez y découvrir « (The Mystery of) KEM», le tout nouveau projet du globe-trotter Stéphane Galland et du flûtiste carnatique indien Ravi Kulur. Nouveau groupe, nouvelle exploration jazz-électro pour Antoine Pierre, jeune batteur belge très en vue sur les scènes européennes et la chanteuse jazz hongroise Veronika Harcsa. Rêve d’Elephant Percussion sera une première live pour le groupe liégeois qui ne fait décidément rien comme tout le monde et invite 3 batteurs, après une ouverture avec Trio Grande. L’incontournable pilier de la scène belge et internationale Bruno Castellucci jouera en quintet avec entre autres le saxophoniste Joe Higham.

Funk, groove et puissance avec les Français Manu Katché aux côtés de Ivan Paduart et Quentin Dujardin ; et Paco Séry, le batteur de génie ivoirien pour une soirée de clôture exceptionnelle. Aux cimaises pendant cet événement, du jazz toujours, avec les illustrations de Serge Dehaes.

Deze 14de festivaleditie staat in het teken van de drum en brengt heel wat revelaties op de planken: één concert op twee is een première! Op het programma : “(The Mystery of) KEM”, het gloednieuwe project van globetrotter Stéphane Galland en de Indische carnatische fluitist Ravi Kulur. De jonge Belgische drummer Antoine Pierre, een graag geziene gast op Europese podia, exploreert de elektro jazz in een nieuwe formatie met de Hongaarse jazz-zangeres Veronika Harcsa. Rêve d’Elephant Percussion wordt het eerste liveoptreden van de Luikse groep die steevast voor originaliteit kiest: na een ouverture met Trio Grande nodigen ze maar liefst 3 drummers uit op het podium. Bruno Castelluci, spilfiguur van de Belgische en internationale scène, treedt op met een kwintet waarin onder meer saxofonist Joe Higham speelt. De Franse muzikanten Manu Katché, Ivan Paduart en Quentin Dujardin zorgen voor een flinke dosis funk, groove en intensiteit, terwijl Paco Séry, geniale drummer uit Ivoorkust, instaat voor een gedenkwaardige slotavond. Jazz alom tijdens deze editie die ook uitpakt met een tentoonstelling rond de illustraties van Serge Dehaes.

During this 14th edition of the festival, where drummers will take centre stage, one of every two concerts will be a première! You will be able to discover for yourselves (The Mystery of) KEM, the brand new project of globetrotting Stéphane Galland and Carnatic flautist Ravi Kulur from India. A new group, a new electro-jazz odyssey for Antoine Pierre, a young Belgian drummer making waves on the European scene, and Hungarian jazz singer Veronika Harcsa. Rêve d’Elephant Percussion will be a live premiere for this group from Liège, who don’t do things quite like anybody else, with their 3 drummers, after an opening with Trio Grande. The ever-present linchpin of the Belgian and international scene, Bruno Castellucci, will play in a quintet alongside the saxophonist Joe Higham.

Funk, groove and power with Manu Katché from France, alongside Ivan Paduart and Quentin Dujardin; and a magical closing night with virtuoso Ivorian drummer Paco Séry. The festival exhibition theme this year will be Jazz, as well, with the illustrations of Serge Dehaes.

d’aventuriers musicaux les plus téméraires et talentueux de la jeune génération belge et d’un des plus grands flûtistes carnatiques actuels, Ravi Kulur en provenance de l’Inde du Sud pour y cultiver de nouveaux aspects rythmiques.

Que ce soit avec Ibrahim Maalouf, Aka Moon ou dans Lobi, la rencontre des cultures, l’enrichissement du langage musical et rythmique en particulier, sont toujours resté la source majeure de motivation de Stéphane Galland. Avec (the Mystery of) KEM, le batteur visite les racines rythmiques où convergent toutes les traditions musicales qu’il a pu côtoyer et intégrer dans son propre langage.

Stéphane Galland stelt de ontmoeting tussen culturen en de verrijking van de muzikale en de ritmische taal centraal in zijn samenwerkingen met Ibrahim Maalouf, Aka Moon of in Lobi. Met (the Mystery of) KEM exploreert de drummer de wortels van het ritme op het kruispunt van alle muzikale tradities die hij leerde kennen en integreerde in zijn eigen muzikale taal.

Stéphane Galland surrounds himself with the most daring and talented of the new generation of Belgian musical adventurers and one of the greatest contemporary Carnatic flutists, Ravi Kulur from South India, to forge new rhythms. Whether with Ibrahim Maalouf, Aka Moon, or in Lobi, the meeting of cultures and the enrichment of musical and rhythmic language have always remained the main source of motivation for Stéphane Galland. D’abord réunis par la musique de Shelly Manne, un de plus grands batteurs de l’histoire du jazz, les leaders de ce quintet rendent hommage aux musiciens qu’ils admirent le plus. L’influence de la musique de Manne, à l’aise dans tous les styles, marqua naturellement le point de départ du quintet qui lui rend ici hommage en interprétant avec bonheur des morceaux de jazz classiques et entraînants teintés de leur vision personnelle. Ils y ajoutent des morceaux de Wynton Marsalis, Terrence Blanchard, Larry Young ou encore John Williams pour créer un répertoire reflétant les différentes tendances du jazz d’hier et d’aujourd’hui.

Passionnés par l’écriture, Ivan Paduart & Quentin Dujardin composent des lignes ciselées, partagées entre l’univers jazz du pianiste et le style inclassable du guitariste.

Leur envie de poursuivre plus loin cette aventure les poussent ainsi à enregistrer un nouvel album 10 ans plus tard aux côtés cette fois de Manu Katché, Richard Bona, Olivier Ker Ourio et Bert Joris. Inspirés et soutenus par ces artistes que l’on ne présente plus, ils livrent « Catharsis ».

ANTOINE PIERRE PRESENTS NEXTAPE (BE•HU•LU•NL) Première FR Avec NextApe, Antoine Pierre pose un univers musical très éclectique. Il nous présente une musique qui,

si elle prend ses racines dans le jazz, fusionne aussi avec des influences résolument électroniques. On y retrouve son talent pour l’écriture des mélodies, ses rythmes cassés et ses arrangements sophistiqués. Son imaginaire est imprégné de musiques, d’oeuvres picturales, cinématographiques et théâtrales… et est aussi empreint de l’actualité.

Le batteur s’est entouré de quatre musiciens de talent : la chanteuse charismatique hongroise Veronika Harcsa, dont la voix claire se superpose avec justesse aux claviers du virtuose Jérôme Klein et à la guitare rockeuse et sensuelle de Lorenzo Di Maio. Au saxophone alto, Ben Van Gelder, habité par sa longue expérience new-yorkaise, apporte au projet une touche acoustique puissante et un son absolument singulier.

Door terug te grijpen naar de wortels van de jazz, maar ook door een fusie met resoluut elektronische invloeden slaagt Antoine Pierre erin om met NextApe een uiterst eclectisch muzikaal universum te creëren.

With NextApe, Antoine Pierre draws us into a highly eclectic musical universe. He offers up a music that, though its roots are in jazz, blends smoothly with markedly electronic influences.

We are treated to his talent for melodies, his broken rhythms and his sophisticated arrangements. His imagination is impregnated with music, with pictorial, cinematographic and theatrical works... and is also imbued with the present.

silence ! C’est pourtant sur leur musique que j’assiste à mon premier concert de jazz. Je ferme les yeux et je suis sur les toits de Paris. A travers la lucarne, Thomas O’Malley accompagné de Duchesse, Marie, Toulouse et Berlioz me font découvrir Scat Cat et son cat-band interprétant sous le crayon de Walt Disney « Tout le monde veut devenir un cat ». Lucien Malson a écrit : « Le jazz offre le plaisir d’un art pensé dans le maintenant, négligeant le contrôle de la réflexion, et où nulle correction, nulle révision, nul amendement ne sont possibles ». Après un passage par la pub comme art director, il s’installe comme illustrateur free-lance. Il illustre une soixantaine de livres scolaires chez Labor, touche à la littérature jeunesse (Casterman), co-écrit avec Philippe Geluck dont il est le coloriste depuis 1990. Il est également dessinateur de presse et de BD (Fluide Glacial, Paquet, Lombard, Poivre & Sel et D’Acôté) et publie deux « art & sketch » (éditions du Singe). En 2017, il se lance dans l’auto-édition avec « Dessine-moi un lapin », recueil de dessins libres et « Blue Note », recueil retraçant 10 ans de dessins sur le jazz.

Ik sluit mijn ogen en ben op de daken van Parijs. Door het dakraam ontdek ik, samen met de door Walt Disney tot leven gewekte Thomas O’Malley, Duchesse, Marie, Toulouse en Berlioz, Scat Cat en zijn cat band met het nummer « Everyone wants to be a cat ». Lucien Malson schreef: « Jazz biedt het genot van een kunstvorm geworteld in het nu, zonder controle uit te oefenen of na te denken. Correctie, herziening of verbetering zijn niet aan de orde ». Dat is de drijfkracht achter mijn grafische aanpak”. Serge Dehaes Serge Dehaes, grafisch vormgever van opleiding, doceert visuele communicatie aan de Académie des Beaux-Arts van Brussel. Na een halte in de reclamewereld als art director, gaat hij van start als freelance illustrator. In 2017 waagt hij zich aan publicaties in eigen beheer « Dessine-moi un lapin », een bundel met onconventionele tekeningen en « Blue Note », een overzicht van 10 jaar tekeningen over jazz.

Een leven van gebed en arbeid Al meer dan 200 jaar kiezen de trappisten van Westmalle voor een leven van gebed en arbeid.

Dat is hun ware roeping, helemaal volgens de regel van Sint-Benedictus. Monniken, zo schrijft hij voor, zorgen zelf voor hun levensonderhoud.

Daarom is er binnen de muren van de abdij ook een brouwerij. De productie houden de monniken bewust beperkt, met bijzondere zorg voor mens en milieu. En omdat ‘winst maken’ hun drijfveer niet is, besteden ze wat overblijft aan caritatieve werken en aan mensen in nood.

Une vie de prière et de travail Depuis plus de 200 ans, les Trappistes de Westmalle ont fait le choix d’une vie de prière et de travail. Cela constitue leur véritable vocation, en stricte conformité avec la règle de Saint Benoît. Les moines, comme le préconisait ce dernier, vivront du fruit de leur travail.

Voilà pourquoi les murs de l’abbaye abritent une brasserie. Les moines y assurent une production délibérément restreinte, tout en accordant une attention particulière à l’homme et à l’environnement. Et comme leur motivation n’est nullement de faire des bénéfices, ils consacrent les profits excédentaires tirés de leur activité à des œuvres caritatives ou à des personnes dans le besoin.
