Duke and Duchess of Gloucester

Background Edward III had seven sons but many of them died in childhood. Those that survived were granted huge dukedoms forming the most powerful family dynasties in the realm - House Mortimer, House Lancaster and House York. The first son and heir, Edward the Black Prince, died before his father, leaving behind him his only son Richard, who after Edward III”s death, was crowned King of England at 10 years old. Richard ruled poorly, displeasing the powerful nobles and was eventually deposed by his cousin, Henry of Lancaster. Henry claimed himself King Henry the Fourth, overleaping his cousin, Mortimer, who had already been publicly named Richard’s heir.

Act 1

Henry V, King of England, conqueror of France, is dead and his infant son, Henry VI is named King. News arrives of the King of France’s untimely death along with a rebellion lead by his son, the Dauphin Charles who claims the French crown back from England. On home soil, a bitter family feud is brewing between two sides of the Plantagenet Family: the Lancaster’s and the York’s. Over Henry V’s coffin, sides are determined by the choice of either a White Rose (for York) or a Red (for Lancaster). On her death bed, Anne Mortimer, reveals a painful secret to her son Richard that will determine him to claim what he sees as his birthright, the English throne. As Henry VI grows, the family feud surrounding him has only grown more bitter. His Uncle Humphrey of Gloucester continues to beat back opposition from his half-uncle, Cardinal Beaufort. The French Charles finds a new hero in the form of a mysterious farm girl called Joan La Pucelle who convinces the dowager Queen of France, Charles’ mother, to turn her back on the English and unite the fractured French. Henry VI resolves to keep his father’s conquest by crossing the seas to be crowned in France as the true king but the English bring with them the feud that has been plaguing their royal family. The haughty Duke of Somerset meets his match in the beautiful Margaret of Anjou and immediately seizes an opportunity to bring her into the English court as a wife for the impressionable young King. The French are defeated, Joan la Pucelle captured and Margaret is made Queen. But not all are made happy by the marriage and the York’s are growing hungry.

Act 2

England’s troubles are far from over. The Lord Protector, Humphrey Duke of Gloucester is troubled by the ambitions of his young wife Eleanor, who enlists the help of the supernatural but gets more than she bargained for. While Humphrey attempts to keep order over the Cardinal, the Dukes of York and Somerset sit in bitter contention over who should be named the new Regent of France. Henry VI’s new wife is having an alarming influence on the King, and even Humphrey’s wife is not exempt from secret schemes and plots. When Eleanor is arrested for witchcraft, Humphrey’s position in the court is shattered and he must resign his protectorship. Henry VI is further manipulated into arresting Humphrey on suspicion of treason, removing his most loyal subject from his side. With Humphrey gone, Henry VI has left himself vulnerable and the vultures are circling. True colours are revealed, sworn enemies collide and once again the fate of England will be decided on a bloody battlefield. But the heavens have other plans in mind as York’s wife Cecily gives birth.

From the Director We’re finally here! Our The Wars of the Roses trilogy began back when the world was a different place. TheatreiNQ was celebrating 10 years with an epic Shakespeare adaptation that would cover 8 of his history plays in one single season. But Covid-19 had other plans for us - and after an incredible season of Part One: The Blood of Kings in February 2020 - the rest of our plans were put on ice. I am so grateful to the resilience of our company and the unwavering support of you, our audience, that we are back to bring you the rest of the story in 2021. It’s no secret that this part of the story and these two plays (Henry VI part 1 & 2) are arguably his worst and therefore least performed. Anyone that knows me will know that that only made me more excited for this challenge. After tonight, I’m sure you’ll ask yourself why these plays are not performed more often. Again, I have set myself the arduous task of placing at least one speaking female character in each scene. Shakespeare gave us 4 incredible female characters and we have included many more historical women who were denied a voice in Shakespeare’s original source material. The White Rose & the Red was always going to be about the next generation and I have been so fortunate to have such a fearless young cast strongly led by our Guest Professionals Lachlan Stevenson & Emily Edwards. Both Lachlan and Emily were members of The Bridge Project at the start of their careers and it has been a gift to be able to work with them on this production alongside so many other Alumni and current members of the Project. This show has also given me the opportunity to work with Isabelle Reynaud who has composed all the original music for the production. I am so incredibly proud of all of these young artists and I can tell you, the future is in good hands.
