BILL NYE: SCIENCE GUY Directors: Jason Sussberg, David Alvarado Remember Bill Nye, the man who engaged children and adults alike with science? Well, the beloved American icon continues his quest to bring the wonders of science to the public. Bill Nye is a man on a mission: to stop the spread of anti-scientific thinking across the world. The former star of the popular children's show Bill Nye The Science Guy is now the CEO of The Planetary Society, an organization founded by Bill's mentor Carl Sagan, where he's launching a solar propelled spacecraft into the cosmos and advocating for the importance of science, research, and discovery in public life. With intimate and exclusive access - as well as plenty of wonder and whimsy - this behind-the-scenes portrait of Nye follows him as he takes off his Science Guy lab coat and takes on those who deny climate change, evolution, and a sciencebased worldview. 7:00 PM, SEPTEMBER 5, 2018

THE DEVIL WE KNOW Director: Stephanie Soechtig This terrifying documentary takes place in SE Ohio and West Virginia, close to Athens. Unraveling one of the biggest environmental scandals of our time, a group of citizens in West Virginia take on a powerful corporation after they discover it has knowingly been dumping a toxic chemical - now found in the blood of 99.7% of Americans - into the drinking water supply. 7:00 PM, SEPTEMBER 19, 2018

DAUGHTERS OF THE FOREST Director: Samantha Grant The UNESCO Mbaracayú Reserve is one of the last wellpreserved remnants of the Alto Paraná Atlantic forests in rural Paraguay. Daughters of the Forest, set in the Mbaracayu forest, follows a group of girls in one of the most remote forests left on earth who attend a radical high school where they learn to protect the threatened forest and forge a better future for themselves. This intimate verité documentary offers a rare glimpse where adolescent girls are provided the opportunity to develop into brave young women. Filmed over the course of five years, we follow the girls from their humble homes in indigenous villages through the year after their graduation to see exactly how their revolutionary education has and will continue to impact their future lives. 7:00 PM, OCTOBER 3, 2018

FALL SUSTAINABILITY SERIES CONT. FARMSTEADERS Director: Shaena Mallett In this story that covers local farmers from Laurel Valley Creamery in Meigs county, Ohio, it is as much a study of place as it is a study of persistence. Having abandoned a career as a food processing engineer at General Mills, Nick returns home, the prodigal son, and he, his wife Celeste and their young family resurrect his late grandfather’s dairy farm. Heroic, benign and accessible, Nick and Celeste’s meditations on life, legacy, and resistance offer an unexpected voice from a forsaken people – those who grow the food that sustains us. 7:00 PM, OCTOBER 17, 2018

WATER EXPLORED: WATER WARRIORS (22 MINS) Director: Michael Premo When an energy company begins searching for natural gas in New Brunswick, Canada, a multicultural group of unlikely warriors–including members of the Mi’kmaq Elsipogtog First Nation, French-speaking Acadians and white, Englishspeaking families–set up a series of road blockades, preventing exploration. After months of resistance, their efforts not only halted drilling; they elected a new government and won an indefinite moratorium on fracking in the province.

FROM FLINT: VOICES OF A POISONED CITY (25 MINS) Director: Elise Conklin From Flint goes beyond the news headlines to spotlight the impact of the devastating water contamination crisis on the people of Flint, Michigan. The film highlights the stories of residents who were personally injured, along with the work of local organizations and individuals that rallied to support them. 7:00 PM, OCTOBER 31, 2018

NIGHT OF SHORTS: AN EVENING OF SHORTS CELEBRATING CONSERVATION AND THE BEAUTY OF THE PLANET.

PERSON OF THE FOREST (17 MINS) Directors: Tim Laman, Melissa Lesh In the vanishing lowland rainforests of Borneo, research is underway to uncover and understand the unique cultural behaviors in wild orangutans before it’s too late.

LETTER TO CONGRESS (3 MINS) Director: Christopher Newman The film was created as a homage to Wallace Stegner and the words he wrote in his famous 'Wilderness Letter' to Congress in 1960. In this current political climate his words began to take on new meaning. His plea for what wilderness can do for us is more relevant now than ever. OTHER SHORT TITLES TO BE ANNOUNCED. 7:00 PM, NOVEMBER 14, 2018

TAKING ROOT Directors: Lisa Merton, Alan Dater The story weaves a compelling and dramatic narrative of one woman’s personal journey, Wangari Maathai in the context of the turbulent, political, and environmental history of her country. Raised in the rural highlands of Kenya, educated in the United States during the 1960s civil rights era, and the first woman to receive a PhD in East and Central Africa, Maathai discovered the heart of her life’s work by reconnecting with the rural women with whom she had grown up. 7:00 PM, NOVEMBER 28, 2018

Judea where the exasperated Romans try to impose order, it is a time of chaos and change with no shortage of messiahs and followers willing to believe them. At it’s center is Brian Cohen, born in Bethlehem in a stable next door, who, by a series of absurd circumstances is caught up in the new religion and reluctantly mistaken for the promised messiah, providing ample opportunity for the entire ensemble (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin) to shine in multiple roles as they question everyone and everything from exlepers, Pontius Pilate and haggling to revolutionaries, crazy prophets, religious fanaticism, Roman centurions and crucifixion, forever changing our biblical view. 7:00 PM, NOV. 2 & 3 | ADMISSION: $8

MUSIC & FILM THE RE-IMAGINED SCORE / A PERFORMANCE BY DUO UNPREPARED: ROGER BRAUN & ANDRÉ GRIBOU

Percussionist Roger Braun and pianist Andre Gribou bring their performances of completely improvised concerts to the movies – not just films from the “silent” era – but creating spontaneous new soundtracks for classic films in a live concert format, playing percussion from around the world and “prepared” & concert pianos. The movies they will improvise scores for are critically acclaimed works from different eras – both address the dilemmas surrounding humans’ complex relationship to technology and progress: Charlie Chaplin’s classic Modern Times (1936) and the iconic tour-de-force 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

MODERN TIMES / Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin’s last outing as the Little Tramp, puts the iconic character to work as a giddily inept factory employee who becomes smitten with a gorgeous gamine (Paulette Goddard). With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, Modern Times—though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!)—is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s untouchable genius as a director of silent comedy. In their second year of the MFA Film program, students make short film projects that focus on their emerging areas of interest and specialization. From idea to script to production to post-production, these films develop over the course of a year until they are premiered at the Athena Cinema.

First year students in the Film Division go through “boot camp. They all take a prescribed series of classes in production, sound, editing, acting, directing, screenwriting, producing, and film studies. During this intensive foundation-building year, they are also compiling a creative portfolio under fairly strict guidelines that includes two 16mm narrative films and a high-def observational documentary.

THE VOICELESS

Director: Vanessa McNeal The Voiceless came into fruition following the “We Are Survivors” film produced by Vanessa McNeal and PLVTO Pros. That short featured the stories of eight survivors of sexual violence. Viewers were in disbelief when they saw that one of the subjects in the film was male. They were shocked because we live in a society that doesn’t acknowledge that sexual violence happens to men. That disbelief inspired the creation of a documentary solely about men. This film is the first step to changing the culture and conversation surrounding sexual violence and who it happens to. 7:00 PM, NOVEMBER 1, 2018 FREE ADMISSION * Free admission brought to you by OU Health Promotion.

Inspired by her roots, M.I.A. created a mashup, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics, Art school punk, hip-hop beats and the voice of multicultural youth.
