STAFF OF THE ATHENA, THANK YOUS

letter from the director Welcome to the Athena Cinema! This is an exciting time of year for film, especially for independent work. It is awards season and a time when many “smaller” films get attention, acclaim and a chance to seen by a wider audience. We are proud to present many of the top contenders for the major awards. We have played or will play films like "Lady Bird", "Darkest Hour", "The Shape of Water", "Call Me By Your Name", "Phantom Thread" and "I, Tonya". Each of these films is a visual experience that deserves to be seen on the big screen. Bringing some of these films has been especially meaningful. Playing Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut “Lady Bird” had special significance after years of programming her acting work. “Greenberg”, “Frances Ha”, “Maggie’s Plan”, “Wiener-Dog”, “Jackie” and “20th Century Women” are just some of the films we’ve shown starring Gerwig. The art of storytelling is central to our mission at the Athena Cinema. Part of that mission includes showing different stories. One of the problems in Hollywood is that the same stories have been highlighted so many times yet there are so many others waiting to be seen and heard. My list of favorite films of 2017 is incomplete because I am still waiting to see so many. Some of my favorites include the female directed “Loving Vincent” and “Faces Places”, the French films “Frantz” and “Personal Shopper” and the dazzling “The Florida Project”. The latter highlights the “hidden homeless” living on the outskirts of the Happiest Place on Earth. It does so with a depth of wonder, beauty and sadness that exceeds the experience of its mostly amateur cast. In 2018, we hope to showcase more films by women, members of the LGBTQ community, the wider international community and by non-white filmmakers. There is a lot of work to do. Fortunately, our community is so supportive of the arts and we love independent film. We hope you enjoy all the Oscar contenders and Golden Globes winners but please take a chance on a film you might not have heard of this year too. It may end up being your favorite. Hope to see you at the movies, Alexandra Kamody

ACCORDING TO A RECENT STUDY, BETWEEN 2007 AND 2016, ONLY 4 PERCENT OF DIRECTORS WERE FEMALE AND 80 PERCENT OF THOSE GOT THE CHANCE TO MAKE ONLY ONE FILM.

SPRING SUSTAINABILITY SERIES SCREENINGS OF DOCUMENTARIES ON SUSTAINABILITY. WEDNESDAYS @ 7 PM FREE ADMISSION

THE ATHENA CINEMA IS VERY EXCITED TO PARTNER WITH ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES AGAIN FOR THE SUSTAINABILITY FILM SERIES ALONG WITH ALDEN LIBRARY AND THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES SUSTAINABILITY STUDIES THEME. Our vision and goals are those of years past: to offer attendees the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of the current issues and concepts related to sustainability and to explore challenges and solutions. We aim to bring together students, faculty and regional community members. The program recognizes the strength of this integration, coming together and learning from each other. Following each screening we invite audience members to join us for a panel discussion hosted by faculty members, students and regional community members. Please join us for a conversation following these beautiful, thought-provoking and timely films.

THE ANTHROPOLOGIST Directors: Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, Jeremy Newberger This documentary examines climate change like no other film before. The fate of the planet is considered from the perspective of American teenager Katie Crate. Over the course of five years, she travels alongside her mother, an anthropologist studying the impact of climate change on indigenous communities. Their journey parallels that of renowned anthropologist Margaret Mead, who for decades sought to understand how global change affects remote cultures. 7:00 PM, JANUARY 24, 2018

NOT WITHOUT US Director: Mark Decena This documentary follows seven grassroots activists from around the world to the 21st U.N. Climate Talks in Paris. The effects of climate change on their lives reveal what’s at stake if a strong agreement to limit carbon emissions is not reached. Yet, the landmark Paris Accords, signed by 192 nations, is non-binding. The film explores solutions to the problems we face. 7:00 PM, FEBRUARY 7, 2018

THE BORNEO CASE Directors: Erik Pauser & Dylan Williams Filmmakers Erik Pauser and Dylan Williams spend five years intimately following the trail of an unlikely group of activists whose aim is to investigate how profits from the illegal logging that has annihilated more than 90% of the Malaysian Borneo Rainforest, have been money laundered into property portfolios all around the world. 7:00 PM, FEBRUARY 21, 2018

WHAT LIES UPSTREAM Director: Cullen Hoback In this classic detective story, investigative filmmaker Cullen Hoback travels to West Virginia to uncover the truth behind a massive chemical spill that left 300,000 people without drinking water for months. But when Hoback discovers an obscene collusion between chemical corporations and the highest levels of government, the investigation spirals in a terrifying direction, and we learn the frightening truth about what lies upstream of us all. 7:00 PM, MARCH 7, 2018

HAPPENING: A CLEAN ENERGY REVOLUTION Directors: James Redford This documentary explores the personal journey into the dawn of the clean energy era as it creates jobs, turns profits, and makes communities stronger and healthier across the US. Unlikely entrepreneurs in communities from Georgetown, TX to Buffalo, NY reveal pioneering clean energy solutions while my discovery of how clean energy works, and what it means at a personal level, becomes the audiences' discovery too. Reaching well beyond a story of technology and innovation, "Happening" explores issues of human resilience, social justice, embracing the future, and finding hope for our survival. 7:00 PM, MARCH 21, 2018

AWAKE: A DREAM FROM STANDING ROCK Directors: Josh Fox, James Spione, Myron Dewey Follow the dramatic rise of the historic #NODAPL native-led peaceful resistance at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, North Dakota, which captured the world’s attention. Thousands of activists converged from around the country to stand in solidarity with the Water Protectors (activists) protesting the construction of the $3.7 billion Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The Water Protectors at Standing Rock have awakened the nation and forever changed the way we fight for clean water, the environment and the future of our planet. 7:00 PM, APRIL 4, 2018

DEATH BY DESIGN Directors: Sue Williams

The cell and smartphone industries have saturated the market; in 2015, it was estimated that 98 percent of all US citizens aged between 18 - 29 years owned a mobile phone. A staggering 86 percent owned smartphones. By 2020, four billion people will have a personal computer. Five billion will own a mobile phone. In an investigation that spans the globe, filmmaker Sue Williams investigates the underbelly of the electronics industry. What was uncovered tells an entirely different story to the falsified "clean industry" reputation promoted by the global electronics industry and the semi-conductor industry. 7:00 PM, APRIL 18, 2018

WOMEN PIONEERS THIS DOCUMENTARY SERIES PROFILES FOUR TRAILBLAZING VISIONARIES. ALL FILMS ARE FREE ADMISSION | SOME FEATURE GUEST SPEAKERS & TALKBACKS

DOLORES HUERTA • HEDY LAMARR • JANE GOODALL • CHAVELA VARGAS

DOLORES Director: Peter Bratt Dolores Huerta is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. Introduction by Dr. Alicia Chavira-Prado, Special Assistant to the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion. 7:00 PM, JANUARY 30, 2018

BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY

Director: Alexandra Dean

What do the most ravishingly beautiful actress of the 1930s and 40s and the inventor whose concepts were the basis of cell phone and bluetooth technology have in common? They are both Hedy Lamarr, the glamour icon whose ravishing visage was the inspiration for Snow White and Cat Woman and a technological trailblazer who perfected a radio system to throw Nazi torpedoes off course during WWII. Weaving interviews and clips with never-before-heard audio tapes of Hedy speaking on the record about her incredible life—from her beginnings as an Austrian Jewish emigre to her scandalous nude scene in the 1933 film Ecstasy to her glittering Hollywood life to her ground-breaking, but completely uncredited inventions to her latter years when she became a recluse, impoverished and almost forgotten—BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY brings to light the story of an unusual and accomplished woman, spurned as too beautiful to be smart, but a role model to this day. This film is also part of our Science on Screen series and will feature a talk by Russ Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Dr. Gerri Botte. 7:00 PM, FEBRUARY 13, 2018

JANE

Director: Brett Morgen

Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage that has been tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of JANE, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall — a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists. This film is also part of our Science on Screen series and will feature a talk by Professor of Functional Morphology and Vertebrate Paleontology, Dr. Nancy Stevens 7:00 PM, FEBRUARY 27, 2018

CHAVELA

Directors: Catherine Gund, Daresha Kyi

Through its lyrical structure Chavela takes viewers on an evocative, thought-provoking journey through the life of iconoclastic, game-changing artist Chavela Vargas. Chavela’s relaxed, conversational tone as she chats with a group of young lesbian admirers in footage Catherine shot in 1991 offers viewers a rare, intimate look at this iconic singer at a pivotal time in her journey. Having just returned to the stage after 12 hard years lost to alcoholism, and a painful breakup with the love of her life, the interview occurs just before she heads to Spain where she’ll rise like a phoenix from the ashes. Strong, funny, and vitally alive, she was in her prime at 71. This unique interview serves as the spine running throughout Chavela, which explores her fascinating life from her birth in Costa Rica to her everlasting presence on earth in the form of passionate love songs and deep relationships that people will never forget. 7:00 PM, MARCH 20, 2018

The proceeds from your membership assist us in expanding our programming and reaching out to the community. The Athena is a mission-based cinema and has been showing film continuously since it opened in 1915. We thank all the film lovers who support our goal to be the finest premiere art house cinema in Southeastern Ohio.
