letter from the director Welcome to 2016 at the Athena! It’s been a fantastic summer of movies here at the Athena. I got the chance to see several great pictures but one of my favorites was The Hunt for the Wilderpeople and I enthusiastically recommend it. It is a little movie with big heart and I loved seeing it with my big sister. The movie would have been delightful on its own but watching it with my favorite person to laugh with was a special treat. Thank you to everyone in the community who came out to support our sold-out screening of Arcadia by Marietta filmmaker Andy Hall. And thank you to Andy and our own talented Yang Miller (who played the lead) for bringing great local work to our screen this summer. In the past, we’ve presented retrospectives of noted directors but this fall we decided to mix up our programming and the result is Déjà View, our cult classics series. By broadening the scope of our offerings for this series, we hope to play something for everyone and bring new audiences to the theater. The series is like a favorite mix tape. Remember those? Like a beloved mix tape, we hope Déjà View brings back fun memories and creates some new ones. These films look great on the big screen — and there is something magical about watching them in a darkened theater with friends. We are welcoming back the Sustainability Series with a lineup of films carefully curated to bring you the best environmental documentaries of the year. We will be hosting several other documentaries for special, one-night engagements, so mark your calendar for Miss Sharon Jones! and Author: The JT Leroy Story. I hope you had a lovely, relaxing summer and that you have a moment to look through our program and select a film or two (or three) to check out this fall. If I can’t convince you, the Athena’s enduring presence on Court Street 101 years after its Grand Opening is certainly a testament to the enriching tradition of theatergoing. Come visit us. See you at the movies! Alexandra Kamody Director

fall sustainability series THE COMMON EXPERIENCE PROJECT ON SUSTAINABILITY IS HAPPY TO PRESENT A GREAT LINEUP OF DOCUMENTARY FILMS THIS FALL. The project goal is to create an engaging and educational experience for students, faculty, staff and the regional community. Attendees will acquire a deeper understanding of the current issues and concepts related to sustainability. No matter how much or how little you know about these issues, the films present an accessible avenue to learn about the topics presented.

Racing Extinction

The films explore the intersection of the environment and sustainability through consumer demands and biodiversity, social justice, forest protections and grass roots innovation, energy production and industry control, species impacts and educational approaches to problem solving and engagement. Each film is pertinent to the challenges facing us, chosen for its beauty and current relevance. Following each showing a panel discussion or talk with the film producer or filmmaker is offered to the audience. This year we are welcoming director Eve Morgenstern (Cheshire, Ohio) and producer Todd Walters (International Peace Parks Expeditions) as well as a variety of faculty, students and community members who share in the discussion and exploration of each film.

RACING EXTINCTION Louie Psihoyos / 87 Minutes OscarŽ-winning director Louie Psihoyos (The Cove) assembles a team of artists and activists on an undercover operation to expose the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. Spanning the globe to infiltrate the world’s most dangerous black markets and using high tech tactics to document the link between carbon emissions and species extinction, Racing Extinction reveals stunning, never-before seen images that truly change the way we see the world. Sept. 7th at 7:00 pm Panel Discussion to follow film screening.

FOREST PRESERVATION EXPLORED: 3 FILMS SEPT. 21 ST AT 7:00 PM I AM CHUT WUTTY Fran Lambrick / 57 Minutes In Cambodia’s Prey Lang Forest deforestation is devastating the lives of the indigenous population. Environmental activist Chut Wutty is determined to fight the illegal practices of logging companies but when investigating a secret military-controlled logging site, Wutty is shot dead. The film follows Wutty’s fierce battle against illegal logging in an extraordinary tale of one person’s courageous battle to save Cambodia’s forests. Following Wutty through the campaigns which ultimately led to his death, I am Chut Wutty offers inspiring insight into his battle against the destruction of Cambodia’s forests.

EARTH, WATER, WOMAN Sarah Feinbloom & Alexandra Swati Guild / 23 Minutes This film tells the inspiring story of a sustainable agro-forestry community in Trinidad & Tobago West Indies, called Fondes Amandes, led by a charismatic Rastafarian woman, Akilah Jaramogi. Three decades ago Akilah settled on a barren, deforested hillside, blighted with floods in the rainy season and fires in the dry season. Together with her late husband, Tacuma, they started a family and reforested over 150 acres, restoring health to the hills and the watershed just outside the capital city of Port-of-Spain. When her husband died, Akilah continued this great work, initiating the Fondes Amandes Community Reforestation Project (FACRP), training community members as stewards of the forests and waters. Today Fondes Amandes is a thriving village atop a flourishing forest of 150 acres where residents have planted about 60,000 seedlings over the past thirty years. This documentary urges young viewers everywhere to examine opportunities in the face of challenges.

A FOREST RETURNS Jean Andrews

THE LAST OCEAN

Peter Young / 88 Minutes

The Ross Sea, Antarctica is the most pristine stretch of ocean on Earth. A vast, frozen landscape that teems with life – whales, seals and penguins carving out a place on the very edge of existence. Largely untouched by humans, it is one of the last places where the delicate balance of nature prevails. But an international fishing fleet has recently found its way to the Ross Sea. It is targeting Antarctic toothfish, sold as Chilean sea bass in up-market restaurants around the world. The catch is so lucrative it is known as white gold. Unless fishing is stopped the natural balance of the Ross Sea will be lost forever. Scientists, a photographer and a filmmaker form ‘the Last Ocean’ and begin a campaign taking on the commercial fishers and governments in a race to protect Earth’s last untouched ocean from our insatiable appetite for fish. October 19th at 7:00 pm / Panel discussion to follow film screening.

Fall Film Division Screenings The Ohio University Film Division fosters an educational environment of creativity, diversity, and excellence. Our students are passionate and disciplined; their styles are eclectic. The only Ohio filmmaking formula is the convergence of technical expertise and skilled visual storytelling. Within this rigorous setting, our students examine and develop motion pictures as an art form, educational tool, and vehicle for social change.

FIRST YEAR SCREENINGS

SECOND YEAR SCREENINGS

First year students in the Film Division go through “boot camp. They all take a prescribed series of classes in production, sound, editing, acting, directing, screenwriting, producing, and film studies. During this intensive foundation-building year, they are also compiling a creative portfolio under fairly strict guidelines that includes two 16mm narrative films and a high-def observational documentary.

In their second year of the MFA Film program, students make short film projects that focus on their emerging areas of interest and specialization. From idea to script to production to post-production, these films develop over the course of a year until they are premiered at the Athena Cinema.

miss sharon jones! SPECIAL, ONE-NIGHT ONLY ENGAGEMENT

Barbara Kopple / 94 Minutes

Two-time Academy Award-Winner® Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, American Dream) follows Grammy-nominated R&B dynamo Sharon Jones during the most courageous year of her life. Often compared to the legendary James Brown because of her powerful and energetic performances, Sharon Jones is no stranger to challenge. For years her music career struggled as she was kept in the wings by a music industry that branded her “too short, too black, too fat.” After decades of working odd jobs, from a corrections officer to a wedding singer, Sharon had a middle-aged breakthrough after joining forces with Brooklyn R&B outfit The Dap-Kings. In 2013, on the eve of the release of the muchanticipated album Give the People What They Want, Sharon was diagnosed with a lifethreatening illness. Miss Sharon Jones! is a triumphant crowd-pleaser that captures an irrepressible human spirit as she battles back to where she belongs: center stage. Traveling to 12 countries on 6 continents, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks, what is it that climate change can’t destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take it away? The 125-minute film will be followed by a panel discussion. October 26th at 7:00 pm Panel discussion to follow film screening. Pink Flamingos

MANY OF THESE FILMS WERE PRODUCED ON LOW BUDGETS BY RELATIVELY UNKNOWN DIRECTORS BUT THEY SEIZED OUR IMAGINATIONS AND NEVER LET GO.

Shock value may have put them on the map but their lasting relevance is a testament to a deeper resonance. There is more to these films than sex, violence and potty humor. They are about, by and for the outsiders. They celebrate the freak and delight in the different. And they do so with pride, triumph and joy, and a fair amount of filth and fun.

PINK FLAMINGOS John Waters / 93 Minutes When notorious Baltimore criminal Divine is named “The Filthiest Person Alive” by a tabloid, a deranged couple schemes to steal her title. When the low-budget film was released it shocked audiences with its unchecked obscenity but but resounded with audiences as Waters declared war on oppressive middle class values and celebrated misfits and nonconformity with defiant delight. THE WIND WILL CARRY US REQUIRES THE REVERENT DARKNESS & COMMUNAL SOLITUDE OF A THEATER. -NEW YORK TIMES

Abbas Kiarostami / 118 minutes

About Kiarostami

Palme d'Or winning-director Abbas Kiarostami’s acclaimed film documents the arrival of an engineer and his colleagues from Tehran in a remote village in Iranian Kurdistan. Assumed by the locals with whom they form an ambivalent relationship to be archaeologists or telecom engineers, the visitors’ behavior and keen interest in the health of an ailing old woman appear strange and their true motives are shrouded in mystery. Haunting and visually stunning, The Wind Will Carry Us is an absorbing abstract meditation on life and death and the divisions between tradition and modernity that stands among Kiarostami’s best works.

Abbas Kiarostami was a legendary Iranian film director, screenwriter, photographer, and poet. His death this summer, shocked and saddened the Iranian and international film communities. He was ranked 6th in The Guardian’s list of the world's 40 best directors. “The highest ranking non-American, and one of the most respected film-makers working today - by his peers if not the general public”, and considered as “… the most influential and controversial post-revolutionary Iranian filmmaker and one of the most highly celebrated directors in the international film community of the last decade”.

another kind of girl collective

with laura doggett in person for post film discussion

Only two years into the war, over 3,500 journalists had traveled through the Camp Za'atari to tell stories of the Syrian people who were forced out of their country to live in exile in Jordan. The stories told were somewhat black and white and largely tragic. In response to the mainstream media reporting of the refugee experience, two workshops were organized to give Syrian girls living as refugees in Jordan's camps and urban areas cameras and the chance to tell their own stories. The workshops, one in Jordan’s Za’atari Refugee Camp and the other in the city of Irbid in northern Jordan, engaged Syrian girls in artistic and technical training in photo and video to reflect on and tell their own stories in first person. With cameras, microphones and pens in hand, the girls set out to document their everyday lives – how it looks, feels and sounds from the ground, at the heart of their world. For these girls, storytelling offers the possibility not just to change the trajectories of their own personal stories but to offer this possibility of change to other girls, and to give alternative ways of seeing to people in their communities and to the world beyond. The workshops were developed and facilitated by documentary filmmaker/educator Laura Doggett with documentary animator/educator Tasneem Toghoj.

Jose Antonio Vargas, Ann Raffaela Lupo / 89 Minutes In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the New York Times Magazine. Documented chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he re-connects with his mother, who he hasn't seen in person in over 20 years. FRIENDS OF THE ATHENA MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM An Athena membership will not only save you money on every visit to the theater, but also help support our educational programs and diverse film selection. Your gift can help keep the Athena thriving for years to come. Visit athenacinema.com/join-support/memberships/ to join today! Our patrons love the films we show and the fact that they can see them in downtown Athens. What many people don’t realize is that the theater relies on support from donations and memberships to continue to bring in this singular, exciting programming. Please help us ensure that Athens retains an alternative to the corporate, multicomplex experience. Support your local art house theater today! The proceeds from your membership assist us in expanding our programming and reaching out to the community. The Athena is a mission-based cinema and has been showing film continuously since it opened in 1915. We thank all the film lovers who support our goal to be the finest premiere art house cinema in Southeastern Ohio.
