LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to the Athena Cinema’s Fall Semester Calendar Booklet! It’s been a pretty remarkable year at the Athena. We celebrated our 100th anniversary this summer with a rare screening of Mary Pickford’s C I N D E R E L L A , a silent version of the legendary fairytale and actually the first film ever to be shown at the Athena. Although few films from this era survive, we were lucky enough to work with the gracious Mary Pickford Foundation in LA to bring back this magical work. The most poignant aspect of the evening was the realization that one hundred years to the day, in the exact same place, our community was gathered to watch the very same film. If you missed our 100th bir thday, don’t worry, there are many more one-of-akind events and rare screenings planned for the coming year. Inside you will find a diverse array of programming that features something for everyone. We will still be bringing the newest, first-run titles in independent film to the Athena each week. That includes the Oscar contenders, the foreign films you won’t see anywhere else, and the latest groundbreaking documentaries. We are hoping some of our special events will pique your interest as well. If you like classic cinema, check out our sampling of the seldom shown films of Gregory La Cava. If animation is your thing, mark your calendar for the breathtaking World of Animation series. We hope you enjoy the show. And thank you to our community for suppor ting us for all these years. Hope to see you at the movies! Alexandra Kamody Director P.S. In this photo, I’m the lady on the left — accompanied by Dr. Ruth Bradley and Professor Madeleine Scott, two great mentors and friends who have both recently retired, which will allow them more time to see movies!

This dramatic romantic comedy received four Academy Awards including Best Picture and has secured a place as one of the most beloved romantic comedies of all time. Sept. 26 at 3:00

DO THE RIGHT THING Spike Lee / 1989 / 120 min. / R A quar ter century after its first showing at the Athena, Spike Lee’s D O T H E R I G H T T H I N G returns to our theater, and its return could not be more timely. Arguably Spike Lee’s most electrifying and definitive moment in film, DTRT highlights and reflects upon exactly the kind of simmering racial and socioeconomic tensions that have recently erupted all over our country yet again, with painful and tragic results. Never has Lee’s knack for capturing culture clashes and the vivid emotion behind the controversy been more evident. Lee’s brilliant cast burns up the screen playing out the drama that erupts on the hottest day of the year when neighbors violently turn against neighbors in the racially diverse Bedford-

Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn. Lee himself turns in a vir tuoso performance as Mookie, the pizza delivery man who kicks off the rioting in the film. Spike Lee, film critics and movie-goers all hotly debated whether Mookie “did the right thing” when the film was released, and the debate still rages today. The film features Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” and remains a cultural landmark in many ways — it was the movie President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama saw on their first date. Featuring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, and the film debuts of both Mar tin Lawrence and Rosie Perez, DTRT is an experience not to be missed. Oct. 24 at 3:00

Muslim gay filmmaker Parvez Sharma travels the many worlds of this dynamic faith, discovering the stories of its most unlikely storytellers: lesbian and gay Muslims. Looking beyond a hostile and war-torn present, it reclaims the Islamic concept of a greater Jihad, whose true meaning is akin to ‘an inner struggle’ or ‘to strive in the path of God’ - allowing its remarkable subjects to move beyond the narrow concept of Jihad as holy war. Oct. 13 at 8:00

Parvez Sharma / 2015 / 79 min. / NR For a gay filmmaker, filming in Saudi Arabia presents two serious challenges: filming is forbidden in the country and homosexuality is punishable by death. For filmmaker Parvez Sharma, however, these were risks he had to assume as he embarked on his Hajj pilgrimage, a journey considered the greatest accomplishment and aspiration within Islam, his religion. He brings back the story of the religion like it has never been told before, having endured the biggest Jihad there is: the struggle with the self. Oct. 14 at 4:00

WATTSTAX Mel Stuart / 1973 / 103 min. / R The legendary “black Woodstock” finally gets its due with a newly restored and digitally remixed version of Mel Stuar t’s documentary of the epochal 1972 concer t at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The film features incendiary performances by Isaac Hayes, Alber t King, Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, the Emotions, the Bar-Kays, and other greats of soul, R&B, and gospel — plus biting humor from a then little-known Richard Pryor. This time capsule of the great comedian, on the eve of crossing over into mainstream stardom, is one of the gems of W AT T S TA X . It also captures a heady moment in mid-1970s, “black-is-beautiful” African-American culture, when Los Angeles’s black community came together just seven years after the Watts riots to celebrate its survival and a renewed hope in its future. have enjoyed more prominence in the canon of American film than LaCava, and usually for dramas. But LaCava worked during a special time in the 1930s in Hollywood. For a brief shining moment, women in film were allowed to be fiery and dynamic — and most impor tantly, funny. This is why his films still feel so modern and fresh, even today. LaCava made romantic comedies that were thoughtful — they could be silly, but they also explored social issues, class, and gender politics. Gregory LaCava had been a painter, a car toonist, and a sometime writer — he was a true ar tist and

gifted intellectual. LaCava was interested the psychological motivation behind his characters and his performers loved him for it. Gregory LaCava’s brilliant flame died out rather quickly after these movies — he was troubled, and alcoholic, and studios did not appreciate his flippant attitude towards sticking to a script. But these two films are a wonderful glimpse into a time in film when women were funny and powerful, and romantic comedies were deeply thoughtful, while still frothy and fun.

MY MAN GODFREY

STAGE DOOR

Gregory La Cava / 1936 / 94 min. / NR La Cava was the first director to tap into the sublime and gleeful comedic abilities of Carole Lombard, a dazzling protofeminist both in art and in life, in the beautiful, farcical MY MAN GODFREY. Her portrayal of Irene Bullock is utterly unique, with her rapid breathless speech, her childlike openness, and her struggle to assert herself and be respected. She is a whirling dervish, and a flawed person, but she has integrity and heart, and Lombard’s comedic timing is absolutely impeccable. Starring William Powell as Godfrey. Oct. 4 at 3:00

Gregory La Cava / 1937 / 92 min. / Approved In STAGE DOOR, La Cava does something even more revolutionary than showcasing a female comedienne — he showcases two: the legendary Ginger Rogers and Katharine Hepburn. The film is about the camaraderie and solidarity of women, told through the story of a boardinghouse for aspiring actresses. It features a dazzling array of both obscure and well-known actresses: you can spot Eve Arden, Lucille Ball, and Gail Patrick. These women are vulnerable and their greatest asset is their friendship. La Cava had his cast virtually live on set and lifted dialogue from their real conversations. The result was sparkling repartee and crackling wit. These are the ultimate fast-talking women — Rogers in all her deadpan glory, as the boardinghouse’s de facto leader, and Hepburn, waspish and defiant as the new girl. They bond in the knowledge that by putting their career aspirations ahead of finding husbands, they are a breed apart. Oct. 11 at 3:00

THE APU TRILOGY SPONSORED BY ARTS FOR OHIO Two decades after its original negatives were burned in a fire, Satyajit Ray’s breathtaking milestone of world cinema rises from the ashes in a meticulously reconstructed new 4K restoration. The Apu Trilogy brought India into the golden age of international ar t-house film, following one indelible character, a freespirited child in rural Bengal who matures into an adolescent urban student and finally a sensitive man of the world. They are among the most achingly beautiful, richly humane movies ever made — essential works for any film lover.

Pather Panchali

PATHER PANCHALI (SONG OF THE LITTLE ROAD) Satyajit Ray / 1955 / 125 min. / NR A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to both little Apu and, just as essentially, the women who will help shape him: his independent older sister, his harried mother, and his kindly and mischievous elderly auntie. With resplendent photography informed by its young protagonist’s perpetual sense of discovery, the Cannes-awarded Pather Panchali is an immersive cinematic experience and a film of elemental power. Aparajito

APARAJITO (THE UNVANQUISHED)

APUR SANSAR (THE WORLD OF APU)

Satyajit Ray / 1956 / 110 min. / NR APARAJITO picks up where the first film leaves off, with Apu and his family having moved away from the country to live in the bustling holy city of Varanasi. As Apu progresses from wide-eyed child to intellectually curious teenager, we witness his academic and moral education, as well as the growing complexity of his relationship with his mother. This tenderly expressive, often heartwrenching film, not only extends but also spiritually deepens the tale of Apu. Oct. 15 at 7:00

Satyajit Ray / 1959 / 105 min. / NR This extraordinary final chapter brings our protagonist’s journey full circle. Apu is now in his early twenties, out of college, and hoping to live as a writer. Alongside his professional ambitions, the film charts his romantic awakening, which occurs as the result of a most unlikely turn of events, and his eventual, fraught fatherhood. APUR SANSAR is a breathtaking conclusion to this monumental trilogy. Oct. 22 at 7:00

THE ATHENA CINEMA SUPPORT FUND The non-profit Athena Cinema’s mission is to serve the Athens and OHIO community by offering a shared space in Uptown Athens where patrons can take part in a wide array of filmgoing experiences and participate in programs that create an atmosphere of dialogue. The Athena Cinema screens documentary, independent, classic, foreign and local films. It hosts OHIO student screenings, environmental panels, and the 43-year-old Athens International Film + Video Festival. It maintains a commitment to sustainability and offers locally grown popcorn and concessions whenever possible. These community programs are possible through your support. To donate to the Athena Cinema Support fund, go to athenacinema.com/ join-support/athena-cinema-support-fund/ Anyone who makes a donation of over $500 is eligible for a dedicated “Thank You” pre-show slide at the theater, featuring their logo, name and any relevant information. Special thanks to the Kleinpenny educational fund for making this support fund possible.
