Architectural Assistant Part 1 Glany Nicholls Architects Glany Nicholls has allowed me to learn and grow in the real worls, I learned to work in a very effiecant and professional work environement. Being a Level 2 BIM company, I learned how BIM can be used in a range of buildings. With most projects being modeled in Revit and Sketchup I learned how to work effieciently using the full potential of the programme increasing work flow for myself and other project users. I mostly worked in the education sector and learned about regulations regarding teaching spaces and following UK building regulations. Working on The University of Nottingham renovation/expansion project has allowed me to learn about renovations on a listed builing, producing design booklets for each meeting has allowed me to grow in my porgramme skills and also understand how and why we have designed thoses spaces in the way we did, understanding the users needs and the clients needs. Working on multi million pound projects allowed me to see how large projects opporate with clients, contractors, sub-contractors and others.

Stoke-On-Trent Train Station Manager Virgin Trains September 2016 - July 2016 Train station development with real client. In Collage I did a concept for the current train station. I worked with the virgin train manager to create a brief for the development using AutoCAD and Sketchup to create visualisations for the final presentation with the client producing a 1:1000 scale model which is being presented at the collage at every event.

Castle Connington SEND School

Castle Donnington School is a Primary School that is being build in Castle Donnington due to the housing master plan. The schools small budget has pushed for some of the design decisions to be pulled back many times and to be revised by a much cheaper alternative. The project includes of 6 class rooms ranging from KS1 and KS2. The cladding of the project has a strong vertical medium which has then been translated into the interior of the design, this is allowed the outside be inside and visa versa.

Castle Connington SEND School

The LRC was an area I personally looked at, in the UK not all students have access to computers or learning facilities at home, obviously this is a problem and limits the students learning hours. Having an LRC allows the student to maximize its learning hours during school. It creates a safe, creative and inspirational space for all students in the school. With this school being used by younger students it was important to consider the rooms height to make them feel welcomed rather than overpowered. With the schools budget I came up with a few creative & interactive concepts that are extremely cost effective.

birmingham bullring To provide an active and dynamic street level A1-A5/D2, entrance and amenity uses are to located on the ground floor which address the pedestrian street levels with active frontages focused along the High Street, Chapel House Street and the Southern portion of Stone Yard providing interest not only on the high street but also to the proposed new public sq . A1-A5/D2 uses are to be located in street level units along the High Street and secondary streets in order to create dynamic active frontages and reinstate a sense of place. Currently the adjacent Irish Centre serves as a live music venue. Due to this, there could be a potential noise source onto the residential development. Refer to the noise report for further details regarding mitigation measures.

A strong brick colonnade provides grounding and rhythm to the design of block A. Set back from the brick clad columns, the façade for the commercial units are expressed as curtain walling, providing increased visibility from the High Street. Large colonnaded columns give the base more weight and prominence in comparison to the middle and top body of the façade. These large columns onto the High Street provide more openness and activating the public realm. Whilst a predominantly red brick façade is proposed to the middle levels, the top is to be expressed with more glazing. The detailing at the top is to be simpler than the middle levels with a language of openings and piers to provide elegance in the termination of the uppermost levels.

an alternate path I thought that I did not want to make a building for the sick. The building needs to be designed for the healthy, we are all cancer sufferers, this building must be uplifting and not one segregated from the world. It is a building about us all wellbeing in the same world. To create the feeling of curiosity and excitement must be achieved to create this building. The rooms of the building shoot upwards towards to south opening to maximum solar gain and views to the canal. Each space has been designed separately to create curious spaces adjusting heights walls and materials. Maggie’s offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. We do not want to suggest there are better or worse ways of dealing with cancer. Any way that helps anybody going through cancer to feel better is fine, with the important proviso that any service offered in the building will be approved by the Professional Advisory Board and will be complementary and not alternative to orthodox medical treatment.

The permeable approach allows the user feel more relaxed. Visual connection is greatly important to Maggie centre users it allows them to feel more open rather than trapped in their situation.

Form Development

The use of three large forms has been used to seperate the function yet still feel connected by the central courtyard.

The use of clear floor plan decision making is important for this scheme as the way finding must be identifiable to all age groups and feel like a home yet feel exciting and uplifting as this is an important feature.

The building has been generally developed in four stages. These steps are clear and complex, the use of organizing the spaces allow for clear understanding of spaces. Sustainability is important and allows an intimate connection with nature and users.

The landscape allows the users have a range of path options to allow for meditation, private walk, outdoor activities and seating areas. The use of water links back to the calmness that is provided within the building making the journey to the building calming and inviting by it self.

The approach of the site clearly shows the mixture of water into the scheme due to our human relation to water. The building facade compliments effectively with the landscape. The use of timber throughout the interior gives a warm, welcome and heartwarming feeling which is what this building is all about, allowing people to come here and have to worry about their condition. With spaces ranging from self isolation to multi function activity spaces there is a space of all visitors including the family and friends of there visitors. Having an organic shaped furniture allows the central core be defined yet separated.

Smethwick Creative Studio

Site Plan The project is to convert the 7-story building into a unique studio collective which reaches beyond fine art and crafts to encompass more creative disciplines. This cultural development would potentially have an economic impact in the area. Studio spaces will be provided for creative people in the area as well as providing spaces for visiting artists. The workshops/spaces should reflect on the rich history to the world of arts such as glassmaking including stained glass making, pottery but could include for new crafts such as ceramics, metal, photography. Artists and craftsmen/craftswomen intermixed together in a unique setting. The main designing was through the section. To give the illusion that floors are floating and creating dynamic voids using broken glass. Each floor has a separate function however with the flexibility aspect of this scheme floors uses can be merged into one. The voids allow for cantilevered floors overlooking other spaces ensuring a visual connection from floor to floor. The green wall on the right has been chosen due to its positive effects with increasing creativity for the users.

I was required to design and produce for presentation proposals for a sustainable/zero carbon experimental house comprising a kitchen dining room, living room, study together with 4 double bedrooms together with ancillary accommodation all suitable for 8 adults.

The design must be adaptable so that it may be initially placed on the sloped site next to the School of Art building and with a minimum of wastage be dismantled and moved to a flat site to the rear of the refurbished Springfield building.

Sustainable and Zero Carbon buildings do not need to be boring or unattractive. The main approach was the use of a mixture of prisms which came from the historic resemblance of the motto ‘from darkness comes light’ and what better to resemble this than a prism. Each space has been made from prisms which overlap into each other to create a relationship between the spaces. A large thermal mass wall runs through the building form to act as a thermal feature as well as an architectural feature.

ReGreeneration This large tower has 7 floors, the apartment block provides for all the demographic in wolverhampton ranging from couples to 4 bedroom flats. This tower is located on the ring road and has features such as SuDs and noise canceling elements to maintain a livable life while still enjoying the views of Wolverhampton.

Ground floor plan of 7 storey appartment The smaller 3 floor flats is made mainly for small families, these homes have minimal shared space to allow minimal maintenance and removes the concept of shared space in your own home. With each room having it’s own balcony it is avery livable and personalisable building.

Ground floor plan of 3 strory appartment It was important to add a range of housing types mainly to allow people to live in the city centre on a budget and maintain their home, these homes can be bungalows, 2 storey homes, store front with upper flats. They can be personalised to fit the users needs and requirements.

THE ARCHITECTURAL INSIDER I started YouTube summer 2018 and it made me expand my reach of helping people. I struggled in ways that I found difficult to find help for and I wanted to make sure no other student must go through this. YouTube is a way of communicating to other on how to be better, especially in this society we can reach much more people using social media. Teaching people while entertaining them, how else do you want to learn. I want to pursue this even while working to allow people understand how it is working and studying as an architecture student as most people do not know what is coming when starting architecture.
