Creating spaces that improve the health and wellbeing of the occupants alongside creating landscaping that improves the natural habitat for wildlife is a key focus of the project. Creating flexible adaptable spaces to allow for home working, or informal living spaces such as the mezzanine have been specifically designed to improve the quality of life for the client and her family.

Project description: New build house with zero-carbon solutions, located in the countryside of Coventry
Involvement: Creating DAS with various design options
Software: Adobe Suite, AutoCAD, SketchUp & Enscape
The initial spatial arrangements were developed to respond to the sites opportunities and constraints, along with the accommodation requirements of the client. The key drivers for the layout of this home was the need for it to be inclusive and to allow for a semi-private annex / studio style space for the client’s disabled son to be able to use as he becomes more independent.
The core considerations in the arrangement of the proposed plans are:
• Orientation of the building to maximise solar gain.
• Maximising views over the site’s naturally landscaped gardens.
• Clustering of the primary and secondary accommodation into different areas of the property.
The client’s vision is to extend the living space out into the gardens and provide seating areas within a naturally landscaped garden.
Diversity, accessibility and styling are equally important features to create a ‘home’ not just ‘an accessible house’. Movement around the house should be easy. Incorporating openplan living which is expected in modern times, wider doorways with sliding doors to minimise handles, and fluid floor plans throughout to minimise trip hazards or step-changes in floor levels for general mobility and a wheelchair user alike.

The plot contains the Typhoo Building as well as light industrial shed units to the north west corner and the locally listed canal building to the north east corner As a local Birmingham practice, we recognise the value that the area of Digbeth has on the city of Birmingham Often referred to as Birmingham’s ‘coolest neighbourhood’ over the last couple of years, the area has become synonymous with creative industry, tech start ups, street art and light manufacturing For future development, we believe that it is important to maintain and nurture the beginnings of this creative neighbourhood and the Typhoo building is perfect for this opportunity
