vintage

designed

leisure

home

in

the

outskirts of Vadodara, Gujarat, another one goes down a contemporary culture trip in Bangalore, embracing bold palettes and showcases some glamorous aesthetic while the third residence in Vadodara again, takes a vernacular shape, experimenting with some age-old materials such as bricks bringing an old world charm to the residents and visitors, alike.

A flurry of birdsounds becomes a constant backdrop for a space of calm shadows, witnessing the playful movement of time.

The home sits on a plot of 27,000 sq.ft, and is a quick 45 minute drive away from Vadodara city. As the city grows, second homes tucked away into the countryside are becoming places of rejuvenation and relaxation for many families.

In the orientation and planning of the ground-level residence, the architects took clues from the river’s length and natural run of the land. A generous driveway and front garden lead into the villa compound, following which the house extends sideways as a long volume, with the river visible beyond.

The building layout as essentially a thin linear strip, parallel to the river brings advantages of eastfacing views and uninterrupted vistas.

The spacious living and family area is laid out in a single bay, with private bedrooms on either side. The seamless living-dining area accommodates large family gatherings or quiet moments of solitude alike.

A deliberately chosen muted interiors palette of white walls, grey ceilings and flooring allows for the views and vistas to come alive, and creates moments of authentic one-ness with nature.

Designed for a family consisting of senior citizens as well as children, the selection of furniture and furnishings is anti-skid, clean and soft-edged.

Amidst this lushness, a composition of stark greys and whites sits like a pristine object on the river’s edge. This is Kalrav- a weekend villa perched on the banks of the beautiful River Mahi.

The dining table, crafted as a hunk of polished driftwood, afloat, anchors the room together. Each liveable area is designed for a complete frontal view through openable French windows, framing the garden and the river waters below.

The guest bedroom carries forward its conversation with nature through a pair of bedside lamps in the form of birds.

This allegory presents itself across the house, in the form of bird-shaped sculptures, fixed and floating lighting fixtures - constantly drawing attention to the ever-present sweet birdsounds.

The design essence of the master bedroom and guest bedroom both lies in simplicity and optimizing outdoor views.

Carefully selected wicker and cane furniture complement the farm-house vibe, while also being lightweight for easy changes.

Set against natural greys and blacks, some metallic sculptures bring the space alive.

Being a cuboidal ‘box’, the terrace space is another accessible surface, which is sometimes used as a sit out or exercise area, overlooking the sprawling gardens and driveway.

The most striking and unique feature of both the rooms is the open-to-sky ‘rain’ showers in the washrooms – a stunning experience, rife with overgrown tropical plants.

The presence of these two smaller courtyards near the bedrooms elevates the connection with the outdoors, bringing in light, wind and the chirping of birds!

Often, the river is home to majestic migratory birds, and appears like a lake of vivid hues of pinks, whites and browns– alive with birds descending for a few days.

The client was looking for a space that reflects warmth of a home with a dash of luxury. We have tried to achieve this by the juxtaposition of materials and textures used.

For example, there is a hint of brass in the walls, hanging lights, customized TV unit, where brass represents luxury and the earthy cement texture clad walls represent the warmth of the space.

The kitchen, dining and living spaces merge as one. We have tried to keep the essence of each space according to its function while also trying to keep the overall design language consistent across the spaces.

The colour and material palette are contrasting in nature. The colours are bright and bold whereas the materials and textures have a subdued tonality to it.

The balance is achieved by play and layering of the contrasting elements.

The master bedroom and children’s bedroom lie at the end of the corridor. A private dressing nook is created in the master bedroom using the wardrobe as a screen, and it also helped in providing a minimal look inside the bedroom.

The theme of the house continues behind the carmine headboard with brass strips inlayed in the light timber paneling.

THE CARPETWEAVING TRADITIONS Feature : House of Knots

With the launch of its debut collection of handcrafted designer rugs, House of Knots reimagines the carpet-weaving traditions of India for the contemporary home.

The rugs are manufactured in all-natural materials, most notably New Zealand Wool and viscose, while all dyes are 100% azo-free.

On entering the house one is greeted with the opening planning concept that adorns the view of courtyard through glass opening is another feature in this house.

Site context of 2200 sqaure feet plot area resides in the dense core of Vadodara city’s hustle and bustle near the main airport area. The site faces a street on the south side.

The brief received was to find calmness in the chaos of daily life. The dwelling is designed for a family of couple with three kids in which spaces are designed to cater their daily needs that represent them to the new generation.

Further walking in, comes the large living room connected with dining, kitchen and island platform. A barrier free space which allows the owner of house to enjoy interactions with her family while cooking food.

The living opens into the courtyard at the middle as well as acts as a buffer from the honking and shades the space from harsh heat rays. Small slit window above the lintel allows for sufficient light to penetrate in for bright daylight interiors.

Architectural language for this soothing house adapts an open air concept: new possibilities of living together in nature arose by creating inward looking spaces, courtyards and a visual connection.

The passive cooling techniques benefit in turning down the prolong use of air conditioning systems.

Experiencing the onsite situation we felt the need to bring natural outdoor landscapes inside the built envelope that allows them to enjoy surroundings uninterrupted without going out.

Passage corridor on the first floor has delicate and alternate patterns oriented as continuous floor mats from the same material of black stone with Jaislmer stones embedded within for uniformity.

One of the master bedroom’s on the ground floor is linked with courtyard that treats for some resort ambient. The owners wanted to greet themselves with nature on waking up daily and have some fresh air flow during the day for relaxation.

Transforming the identity of backdrops, an attempt to depict natural material palette on wall, green textured tiles are juxtapose with stone patterned tiles in curve forms to create large wall art. Feel of materials attract the curiosity of viewers to feel it.

Son’s room opens up into a large terrace garden on the front elevation of the space, which sets a delightful sit out space. This huge sliding ventilation opening on the southern façade resolves passive cooling systems and makes it more energy efficient to operate.

This pattern weaves story of intricate façade design details that tend to change its shadows based on sun’s inclination throughout the day. The design nurtures the idea of sustainable dwelling that responds to nature based on climatic context.

Stepping out in the passage, one gets to enjoy two courtyards on both sides. One of the triple height courtyards.

The intent was to use diverse textures and lighting in the space to not only add drama and luxury, but to also create a warmrelaxed and a welcoming ambience.

Upon entering the daughter’s room on first floor, one is delighted to see another exploration of backdrop in wall tiles that imitates random yet central composition of light and dark strips in zebra pattern forms. The art accents the backdrop from adjacent walls.

Large window opening can convert as a low height window seating for the daughter that opens towards the courtyard to enjoy nature, connect with her parents or simply sit and stare the large clay wall art radial mural.

The lavish bedroom on second floor adorns large modules of wooden grids evenly placed on perpendicular wall by emphazing only the bold depth of grooves.

Backdrop appears to float on wall due to its arrangement. .

It connects with a Jacuzzi bath that adds to the excitement of owners to spend their relaxing weekends as a resort tranquil into their own residential abode for hours. To add a playful element to the backdrop of bath, clay tiles wall art with plant installation in the frame, with dark beige textured tiles and light blue textured tiles.
