Gav Barbey Ice Melts Jan 26 - Feb 18 2024

Ice Melt Performance Art/Exhibition Creation On Saturday 27th January Gav Barbey created a series of art works from specially created ice blocks. Each block was combined with pigment and paint to slowly melt onto the canvas. Gav used physical movement performance art to control the melt in creating the unique artworks that are now on show and for sale.

Gav Barbey - Ice Melts

Everything we observe is changing moment by moment... it has no inherent static nature... When we give ourselves up to being present in the moment, we breathe, feel, hear and see. These are the baselines of our perception, what is outside, around and within us. Flow and movements propel our imaginations and storytelling. Interdisciplinary artist Gav Barbey freezes colours (pigment/paint) into blocks of ice. Colours frozen in water. Multiple colours lay static, frozen in time. Ice melts and colour flows to reveal an inner world, forming patterns, rivers, expressions, to eventually evaporate, dry and stain the canvas, a process of transformation within water’s hydrologic cycles. It does not concern my initial idea. If the material, the frozen forms are temporal, it is what they express at any given moment within their journey… my journey…the audiences journey which matters.

Transmogrification…Grace… the figurative abstraction of a story that reveals itself to both artist and viewer; like the dance of a fire, the course of a river, the roots and branches of a tree, the meanderings of the mind, the meditation of the spirit, the playfulness of the physical; these works hope to celebrate rather then dictate what we see and feel within any given moment and the story we are influenced to put upon them within that moment. When we bundle individuals into groups by labelling them, we so often overlook the diversities that make them part of any such group. The painting is not separate from artist or viewer; and in both we see the other... as painter is viewer and viewer as artist.

Ice Melt Street Activation On Friday 26 January 2024 Interdisciplinary artist Gav Barbey froze colours (natural pigment and natural elements) into 130 lt blocks of ice that were positioned around the Sorrento village to slowly melt over Australia day. The colours/flowers were frozen in water to create multiple colours that lay static, frozen in time. Ice melted and colour flowed to reveal an inner world, forming patterns, rivers, expressions which eventually evaporated and dried, a process of transformation within the water’s hydrologic cycles.

Gav Barbey Competencies, Skills + Attributes Visual Art - painting, sculpture, installation, exhibitions, experimental art Theatre/Film Design - design process, script analysis, movement, set and costumes, workshop Collaboration - inspiring, equality, leadership, facilitation Human-Centred Design - meets deadlines, coordinates teams, rapid prototyping, community engagment Installation - exploration, spatial, narrative Writer - storyteller, team collaboration, illustrator Teacher - workshop development, group dynamics, wellbeing Movement - painting, yoga, dance, puppetry Over the past 12 years I have formulated a facilitation model to inspire creative innovation, collaborating with education experts, corporate strategists and wellbeing practitioners. I have a strong belief that great innovation and design are driven by asking the right questions and then asking more questions— from curiosity and saying ‘Yes’, every idea has at least one valued concept within it. Human centred design, ideation, rapid prototyping, agile and community engagement are all based upon a communal understanding, where space is opened for sparking creativity, imagination and expression. When we listen, feel and celebrate diversity, we open up to a mindfulness that can express itself within any form, where right is formulated through journey, through deep listening, through play and a sense of belonging and inclusion. When we engage people, environment and the sensuous, we can expedience sustainably from idea, question, need through to a deliverable that truly excites, is changeable and opens doors within a sustainable and collective process. The culmination of some of this work and ideation was delivered in a TEDx talk at Melbourne University in 2016—the talk explores the notions of pictorial language. See TEDx Talk I have conceptualised, designed, created facilitated and tailored workshops for a broad range of companies, from the Arts, Corporates, Education and Communities. These workshops, collaborations, ideations inspire participants to express themselves through creative play, observational connectivity, mindfulness and problem solving through the power of curiosity and freedom to express, ideation. I am an art director, production and costume designer in theatre, film, television and advertising. I am known in the industry as a designer who works, creates within rehearsals, utilising the input of the cast, writer, director and crew. My work is based upon movement and theatrical magic; I have a background in dance, puppetry and visual based text performance. As a multi-disciplined Visual Artist my interest is within the meditative flow of movement, interaction and participation.
