KUDAKWASHE MUSONI ALL IN A DAY'S WORK

I

am Kudakwashe Brendon Musoni aka Blooming Star, born in a family of 4 on the 5th of March 2004 in the town of Chivhu, Zimbabwe. In my official capacity, I serve as a Junior Member of Parliament (MP) to Honorable J. Mangwiro (the Deputy Minister of Health and Childcare) for Chikomba West constituency. I am the outgoing national executive member for the National Junior Councilors Association of Zimbabwe (NJCA). That aside, l am a form 6 sciences student at Liebenberg High School in Chivhu and I am the chairperson for Young People’s Network in Chikomba district. I do a lot of volunteer work in my district. I am part of the MoonCatcher program and the mobile library program which is operated by Teresa Dangwa of Dangwa Initiative Trust (Dan’lt).

As a Junior MP, my duty is to advocate on behalf of the young people with focus on the essence of leadership, community values, democracy and citizenry. I am also involved in local and national activities were I also advocate for the youths. Our mantra as youth leaders is "there is nothing for us (the youth) without us. I also lobby with my Senior MP and the government on children`s laws and policies so that they are enshrined in the supreme law of the country. In addition, I raise awareness aimed at promoting the understanding of child rights namely the right to participation, education and identity, to mention a few. Fostering youth developmental issues through skill building and mentoring in a wide range of areas, is part of my day to day itinerary.

In my constituency I am involved in different types of advocacies against the following social ills: i) Stigmatization of disabled people; ii) Early child marriages and unwanted teen pregnancies; iii) Youth dis-empowerment and innovation in all sectors; iv) Drug and substance abuse (including alcohol); v) Exclusion of young people from participating both socially and publicly (this includes clean up campaigns, tree planting, awareness campaigns, etc); vi) Gender based violence; vii) Suppression of young people’s talents; viii) Culture dilution so as to maintain our background and our true identity (origin); ix) Self-neglect, in favour of individual cleanliness and upkeeping a sustainable environment; x) Unsafe use of technology and lack of adaptation within communities; xi) Dirty patrimonial traditional practices; and xii) Moral degradation, in favour of uprightness and coordination. To me and the parliamentary cause that I stand for, it is important that poetry, music and arts are kept thriving at the grassroots level. This is made possible through the teacher-led arts clubs in schools. We specialize in edutainment because we have observed that kids enjoy everything that has to do with entertainment. Therefore, we use entertainment as a means to educate. For example, with folk-telling at schools, our main obligation is to teach as well as entertain, with the end result of communicating life lessons. Basically, we 4

earmark to nurture and promote the rise of young talents and skills. Furthermore, this is made possible by initiation of debates, theatre (dramas), dances, music shows, public speaking contests, quizzes, poetry slams and so on. This is beneficial to my peers as they gain wide ranging information through the visual performances, and they can easily pass on lessons learnt to others. Those who participate also learn life lessons in relation to the exhibited characters and become knowledgeable of the effects and/or impact of negative actions, if any. Such exposure can potentially change the mindset of individuals. It can also act as an early prevention mechanism in dealing with negative social vices and bad behaviors. I must hasten to say commemorations and awareness campaigns like the 16 days against Gender Based Violence (GBV) have increased the need for our peer-to-peer interaction sessions at school level. In contrast, at the community grassroots level, art activities are being neglected as a result of lack of sponsorship, funding, commitment, and dedication on the parts of every stakeholder. This remains an eyesore. Arts ought to be practiced at low levels starting from primary up until secondary school, with the relevant ministry's involvement. On the other hand, there is still a general lack of understanding in our communities as to what art is. In my view, something needs to be done by arts and non-arts organisations to lure the society and turn around its deaf ear. For instance, in Chivhu there's no platform for individuals to come together and learn about their art be it acting or painting. There is no further practical training conducted by VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

Philanthropy is about the love of humanity. It is about caring, developing, and enhancing individuals` livelihoods, especially those in need or less privileged. It is different from social responsibility because one is not obliged to help the less privileged. The act is done without expecting anything in return. For example, corporate organisations may practice social responsibility by complying to codes or standing rules and in expectation of tax incentives. Philanthropy is, therefore, a form of help that is heartfelt and granted to improve the quality of individual lives. In contrast, social responsibility is giving back to the society so as to gain favours, to build loyal customers, achieve positive brand recognition and continued support from the local people through program launching and participation in public events. ~ Kudakwashe Brendon Musoni

experts in the fields. However, the lack of training and guidance has not stopped the youths from persevering in achieving their dreams. For example, this is evidenced by the establishment of backyard music studios which lack proper equipment and resources. The talent is there, however there is a lack of resources. From my day-to-day experiences, I have learnt that drug and substance abuse is rife in my constituency. Though it has become a norm, drug abuse is the overindulgence in hopeless vices. It has contributed to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and illicit practices such as baby dumping from unwanted pregnancies. Drugs lead to the deadliest ailment known as VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

'addiction' which may prove to be fatal. In Chivhu we have lost too many young lives to drug abuse. The situation is in actual fact continuously getting out of hand as some youths have performed atrocious acts such as murder, as a result of drug abuse. To further corroborate on the issue of drug abuse, it is important to take note of the causes of drug abuse. These being peer pressure, unemployment, abject poverty, lack of coping strategies and counselling, teenage rebellion, inadequate recreational facilities, lack of knowledge on drug use, loneliness, familial instability and many more. The drugs that are commonly abused are alcohol, ecstasy, mercury, 5

heroin, cocaine (popularly known as crack), dagga (marijuana), nyaope, bronchlear, kambwa amongst others. Negative effects have been lack of communal and economic development or productivity and growing illiteracy due to rising school drop-out rate, unwanted teen pregnancies, substance induced psychosis (mental disorders/disabilities), family disintegration and the spreading of sexually transmitted infections (HIV/AIDS). This is the chief reason for my advocacy for moral uprightness by engaging the young people of all ages. If someone wants to unwind events or remove self from problems it's not wise to turn to drugs. Also to note is the issue of relapsing amongst drug addicts as a result of poor coping strategies, therefore there is need for establishment of rehabilitation centres and generating employment opportunities for the youths. Also, it is always good to be eager to achieve something in life be it education so as to be able to sustain ones' self and family rather than being wayward and abusing alcohol and drugs. THE MOONCATCHER OUTREACH PROGRAM My involvement with the program began after observing that most multi-faceted efforts and outreach programs are focused on the prime goal of giving girls ample opportunity to stay in school and complete their education with little to no hussles. The aim is to establish self-confidence as well as independency in all girl children. 6

Many less privileged girls, even mothers, living in remote areas, face several difficulties. One major problem is the lack of sanitary wear which usually results in the use of unsafe materials which later can cause a plethora of health-related complications. The program delivers assistance in the form of sanitary wear to girls in remote areas (rural areas) and even those in the urban areas. We donate washable reusable pads kits for girls still in school, thus ensuring they stay within the school premise and their learning, confidence and self-esteem is not affected negatively. This has helped to protect the girl child from being pressured into early marriages, early pregnancy and stigmatisation from other students. This has empowered the girl child to lead independent lives and has boosted the community level contributions. The program also promotes employment creation to those who volunteer to become MoonCatchers. A lot is being done out there, but some places are left behind. There's need for full mobilisation and dedicated individuals to assist. BABY JAYDEN MAKOMBORERO MOYO I initiated and championed the donations collection program (within my capacity) for baby Jayden. He was dumped by his mother. I was authorised by the district administrator (DA), the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Ministry of youth, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Childcare. The donations made it possible for us to cater for the baby's needs and for the baby to stay in the hospital for nearly a month and some weeks. I should acknowledge the assistance I received from fellow junior parliamentarians and the commuVACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

change in my confidence levels, passion, perseverance, and insight for broadened decision making. To me poetry writing is one way to relieve stress and is a way of gaining broader knowledge about other people's way of living, customs, and beliefs. In conclusion, my parting words are that always be willing to share your power and privilege in order to make your community and the world a better place for everyone. Have a purpose-driven life and know that challenges represent change and change represents growth. Negative energy will always be around. Be confident and chase after your dreams. Be the support you need. Do not relax expecting someone to come and support you. My favourite Japanese Poet Nashua Basho once said that "Go to the pine if you want to learn about the pine, or to the bamboo if you want to learn about the bamboo." And in doing so you must leave your subjective preoccupations with yourself. Otherwise you won`t improve yourself on the object whilst you are not learning.' Fly high, show love, stay humble, unite and lead an exemplary life that you would want be remembered for.

VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS The Sailors group has conveyed important insights into the way I now understand the world and given me a deeper sense of my inner and innate self-values. I have come to the realisation that art has a greater impact in shaping one's identity, culture and it encourages critical thinking and analytical skills. It is through art that I have improved the quality of my day to day livelihood thus bringing me more and more positive energy. I have witnessed a greater VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

SHE GOT FORM LIKE NO OTHER! If the earth is a circle Well rounded; how come she has four corners? I remember pretty well my misunderstanding of The four corners of the rule of law Could it be the same misapprehension I have for mother earth? That part of 'mother' at least I comprehend quite easily She is carrying and caring at the same time And that she floats like an iceberg Soulful and motherly Soilful and muddy Dry land On waters, With contoured mountain form Like it were with Coca-Cola bottling The book of Genesis has it told She used to be without form Till shape shifting took place I only have been slow figuratively At visualising a square peg fitting into a hole A wet spring as good as a well dugout, A hot spring pouring magma, here and there, Her mannerism, at times! Only I see wireless code hanging Out of sight, From the divorced firmament up above Earth undoubtedly is, One more miraculous piece of work. DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES I had dreams of a greener earth, but they have fallen apart; Ozonic gases and hatred left me to rot. There's no more future and prophecies; All we had came to the grave. But there's an old song, lying inside the cassette, And the words sang; "the world's ours for the taking, and Pompeii is waiting in the future." And when I cleanse my ears, it disappears into the blue, And I don't know how to make ammends with the dreams in the night. By @DA_Scripta chivakum@gmail.com +263718777471

“ZiMunamato” is the name of my latest song. ZiMunamato, is a Shona word which means “A Very Big Prayer.” Another name of this song is “Shema” which in Hebrew, means “Hear”. This song resonates with a Jewish prayer that is found in meditating through Deuteronomy 6:4-9. “This song is soaked, is serenity; spiritually activating, with a constant meditational thought line, that pounces on every heartbeat of life, with thurds of great joy and continuous amazement...” Listen to this song on YouTube, Spotify: Amazon. On the video you will see a graduate wearing a cap of knowledge and a gown pushing chingoro (scotchcart) selling bananas which is an expression that we are forced to do jobs that we didn't go to school for. Inorder to get a job one has to have a 'connection' with powerful and influental people. So basically, Mazino PaZimbabwe zvakaoma paZimbabwe. Listen to the song on YouTube

ntertaining people is not only about getting into a studio, recording a song and performing it on stage. Singing a song is one thing and it reaching the ears of the public is another. This is where the role of a DJ comes in. The DJ works his or her magic behind decks to make the song more enjoyable. One DJ who has managed to allow music to reach the masses is DJ Marsh B.

“My name is Marshall Bareta a.k.a DJ Marsh B. I was born on the first of May 1996 and I stay in the city that does not sleep Harare, Budiriro Suburb. I'm the second born in a family of four. There are different types of DJ’s in the world. There are radio DJ’s and producers and I’m neither one of the above. Basically, I'm more like DJ Simple Simon. I’m a DJ who mainly specializes in creating mixtapes. In Zimbabwe it is that part of the music industry where many are reluctant to venture into. I saw the need and decided to take a shot. This was made easy by my ability to fuse beats and/or songs into one. From day one, I knew I could do something with my ability. To every artist or musician, music is life. It is something that can bring different backgrounds together and unify them as one. Being a DJ gives me a platform where I can express my views over certain topics and disseminate them to the audience. If I were to become a musician I would pursue the jazz genre. I believe it is a genre which different generations can listen to together and enjoy each other's company despite the generational gaps. I love being a DJ and to date, I have created VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

over 100 mixtapes. Most of them have been distributed to the public and some are customized according to individual requests. For instance a wedding mixtape can suit the theme of the wedding in particular. As a DJ, you ought to be able to blend different genres. Blending different genres is something that I have mastered of late. In reference to my Amapiano mix, it is something that was created as an experiment of fusing Zim Hip-hop and Amapiano so as to bring out the best blend and surprisingly, it was well received. I believe it is good sometimes to keep up with the trends and being afloat with trending initiatives. On the other hand, it is also important not to neglect other genres so as to cater for its market. As mentioned earlier, music is life. It is not that I have a schedule dedicated to listening to music only, but it's something in my veins. Even when taking a morning jog, or just doing chores or being at work, I just put on my headphones. If the chords strike right, then I'll try to give it a touch. Moreso, networking with various artists makes my life easier. For instance, if an artist 23

ONE VOICE MORE MUSIC DJ MARSH B MARSHALL ENTERTAINMENT

releases a song he/she can send it to me directly or through their handles on social media then I take it from there. Pertaining to keeping track of what’s happening in the music industry, I follow many artists as well as other music bloggers. One day, I believe I’d experiment DJing with poetry. Poetry being the art of portraying and unlocking imaginations, emotions, and thoughts, that can be a whole new level of art. For example, if you take Chipiri chezvipikiri by VaChikepe and mix it with renditions by other artists and infuse it into a mixtape with a beat – that’s a level of creation of magical craft. This will be a positive challenge which will enable me to sail in uncharted waters. We all have goals and ambitions. In the next couple of years l look forward to working with fellow regional artists and if all goes well, then I will aim for international stages. It is my wish that in Zimbabwe, DJ's like me will get recognition in the Arts industry for example being inducted into National Arts and Music Awards (NAMA). To my fellow colleagues in the industry especially in Zimbabwe, I’d like to say, charity begins at home. Let's try to be one family and take note of what we see happening across Limpopo. South African artists work together and uplift each other. However, back home it is a different song. If we are to overcome this, then we are ready to conquer the world. WORDS IN VERSE I WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE EARTH? THE 100 SAILORS INTERNATIONAL AFFILIATES

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT EARTH?? Earth is surprisingly amazing. The great wild and nature life. The green plants and smoothing atmosphere. The clear blue charming sky. The waving warm ocean winds. But all this blasts your thinking in many expects. Through the times lived and places seen. We are stepping all that to the ground. We are polluting our rivers and oceans. We are burning materials that's killing and about to cruise the up and going generations. We are destroying the wonderful wonders of nature. It has grown roots from lands being polluted to space now being polluted. And it’s all our actions. Yes we are not against the development of countries. But we are against the destroying of the beauty that can’t be replaced. Staying green is the way. Learning, teaching and sharing is the smartest way. Actions have consequences. The earth was green. But now climbing the mountain of dark days. Global warming is a pandemic on its own. If you don’t see it now, then you will find out that you are busy digging your own graves. Truly United. We can return to green life. Together as one By Nobuhle Maseko _the ink spreader Nobuhlemaseko16@gmail.com

MAX HEINEGG POETRY! THE JOURNEY OF WORDS

Poetry! The journey of words Thirty-four years in love with it

P

oetry is a gift that a lot of people do not understand. To some, it is craziness and to others, a set of words grouped together to not be understood. But what makes one understand? What kind of wisdom allows one to become a poet?

poetry away while I worked on songwriting for a long time and then coming back to poetry in my 40s, it’s been quite a journey and frankly, about 20 of those years were spent working on songs and not writing poems, but I think they are two paths that lead to the same destination.

We met up with Max Heinegg and this is what he had to say:

It’s really satisfying to finally publish a collection that is cohesive and tells the story of my life so far. The book, Good Harbor, is about family and parenting and the sense of how we try to find safety in life. At this point, I have three other full collections that I’m editing, so with any luck, there will be many other books. I’ve published over 250 poems, so I would say that like many poets, the immediate part of the journey (the day to day) is the poem you’re working on. As the years roll by, we publish some poems and not others, and collections can capture times or themes in our lives as poets, but the main thing is that we stay in love with life and writing the poetry.

“I’m a 49-year-old dad, husband, poet, musician (singer-songwriter and guitarist), English teacher, and recently, a beer brewer turned local businessman. I was born in Cooperstown, NY, a graduate of Union College in NY and Boston University. I’ve been a teacher for 24 years, and a musician for longer, singing, playing guitars, and writing songs, as well as adapting poems from the public domain into contemporary sounding songs. From my initial falling-in-love period with poetry as a teenager to writing my first book of poems in my early 20s, to putting VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

MAX HEINEGG POETRY! THE JOURNEY OF WORDS

The thing with poetry is, it has its fans, so I believe Good Harbor is doing well with people who enjoy poetry. It certainly isn’t going to buy me a new car, but maybe a bicycle! The book is available through Lily Poetry Press as well as Barnes and Noble and Amazon. It’s selling well at readings and online, so I’m happy with its progress. Having said that, I’ve published over 250 poems, they all have been inspired by different things. For instance, Sanibel is a lyric poem that is a meditation on my marriage and how my wife and I went from falling in love with each other to being parents. It’s about being in Sanibel, Florida on a vacation, standing in the waves on very sharp rocks and shells and thinking about being lucky. The language is focused on the musical quality of water, sun, and affection, so it’s possible a reader could find something else in the poem, but the intention is to capture snapshots of a relationship as it evolves. The poem finishes with the sense that, “the darkness is all our palace.” I was feeling very content when I wrote that.

A lot of people ask if music and poetry have a connection and I would say, there is a huge and historical relationship. The history of poetry is intertwined with song, from the rhapsodies and griots and scops to today, when excellent lyricists put poetic lyrics to guitar chords. I think there is a separation in the sense that most modern poets just put their words on the page, but I feel that increasingly we are seeing wonderful blends of genre. Rap, for one, is poetry spoken over beats, “beats that are funky,” to quote Q-Tip. It’s almost too big a topic to discuss, but to be brief, I’d say that poetry is its own music but would also be wise to stay friends with music and to have dalliances with it, because there are so many wonderful possibilities when it comes to combining the two. Recently, I made a record called Through Traveler, which takes 14 poems from the public domain and by author permission and sets them to music and recasts them as songs. I feel like how the record works is what I want to say about the relationship between poetry and music.

I take literary citizenship seriously and as an honor or an opportunity I’m lucky to have. For every publication or award I’ve received, believe me when I tell you there are a ton of rejections that I’ve gotten that the public isn’t aware of (but every writer knows are there).

As a poet who happens to be a musician, I’ve released five solo records and seven records when I was in rock bands. I’ve probably written about 200 songs. Some are much better than others! With my music being distributed digitally, it’s hard to say how many people are enjoying the music. I’ve just started playing live again. However, I feel that the music keeps getting better, so I’m hoping that being on big platforms like iTunes, Tidal, Spotify etc. can get my music into as many people’s ears as possible.

I try to give back by writing reviews of other poets, sharing other poets’ work on social media, and by teaching a poetry elective at my public high school, as well as leading professional development in my district to try to get the department and the high school to embrace writers from around the world. 32

I would say I don’t balance my passions as much as I do them all as much as I can, as hard as I can, and sometimes do one at the VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

expense of the other. I am usually exhausted. I think that if I concentrated just on one, I might be dangerous! (Wink and laughs) Realistically, with being a full-time parent and teacher, I really wish there were more hours in the day and more years in this life. So, I guess I work smarter and am tactical; I can’t do everything, so I just try to do what I know and what I have a chance at pulling off! Everyone has their own set of expectations and, my expectation is to put out a book every two years for the next decade, to do a record every 2-3 years, to open a successful brewery, and to (if I’m lucky) keep my health intact so I can enjoy my lovely family. And if I fail to meet these expectations, it won’t be for lack of trying. That much, we can control. Other passions can have a positive impact on your main ones. I think falling in love with music and with teaching have both made me a better writer. In terms of poetry, I’d say it’s really about the time you put into your work because each piece really demands you give it enough time to bloom." believe we all know what it means when people say, ‘mother nature is calling’, and what happens when one resists the calling. Her wrath will surely be upon us. Yours truly DrThembieTanya (DR) caught up with Eminently Eve, a digital content creator, just to get a clear insight and her understanding in taking heed to nature. DR: Who is the face behind Eminently Eve? Is Eminently Eve an individual, a brand or a company? Kindly walk us through! EE: Eminently Eve is a personal brand with the objective of encouraging the conservation of wildlife, nature and environment through domestic tourism. Even though it is a personal brand, there are people VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

who believe in the goal and have come onboard to support the brand. In order to achieve the above goal/objective,some of the specific things I do include sharing conservation-oriented destinations in our country Zimbabwe so that information about these destinations is readily available on the internet. I also partner with conservation-oriented brands to help the information dissemination of their products and services. In addition, I help them with digital marketing strategies based on my experience in building Eminently Eve up from scratch to date - having over 28000 social media followers amassed organically. I have also gained further experience in the digital marketing field from working with the different brands.

DR: The logo on your website is green, and it's a crown. Why associate Eminently Eve with these two?

among other disasters, only showing us that going to war with nature is a guaranteed loss on our part. We ought to honour, respect and live harmoniously with nature.

EE: The colour green represents nature. Therefore, it was the colour of choice as most of my work deals with issues of wildlife, environment, conservation and ecotourism.

DR:How do you define "intimacy with nature"? How can one truly be intimate with nature?

The crown represents mother nature and serves as a reminder that after all has been said and done, mother nature remains the Queen that she is. Yes we may choose to be inconsiderate and destroy nature for example building on wetlands or mountains (destroying them) but when Mother Nature unleashes her powers there will be the unfortunate loss of lives, properties,

EE: Intimacy means "close familiarity or friendship" and also "a cosy and private or relaxed atmosphere." Having intimacy with nature therefore means having a level of closeness with nature that can be likened to that of a pure friendship. Nature already provides a cosy, private and relaxed atmosphere so when one is truly intimate with nature it means they

are choosing to surrender themselves to nature and allow it to take care of their wellbeing, emotionally, mentally and physically. Having intimacy with nature (similar to having an intimate relationship with a friend) means you don't think of doing anything that damages or destroys it, such as, dumping litter outside of vehicles, in rivers or just the surrounding environment and destroying wetlands for agricultural or construction purposes, among other things. DR: Human beings seem to be the biggest threat to nature. What is the importance of conserving nature and how does one do so through tourism? EE: When I was trying to figure out ways that I can achieve my goal of encouraging nature conservation, I came across a statement by Michael Selous (a prominent conservationist) which read, "One cannot conserve that which they don't love, love that which they don't know, or know that which they have never seen"...and that is when I started brainstorming on how people can know what a white rhino looks like for example, so that they understand its role in nature and love it enough to want to conserve it, and ecotourism came to my mind. Conservation oriented destinations are the most guaranteed places where one can visit and actually witness a highly functional natural ecosystem. They also bring into discussions about the importance of nature and a healthy, unpolluted environment. Roles nature plays in human's life and on the planet at large also get to be discussed and/or observed when at conservation oriented destinations. In addition to this, paying entry and activity fees at these destinations also supports conservation projects financially so that they continue to exist. I have also shared how domestic ecotourism helps in conservation of nature and the environment in a number of articles on my website on this link https://www.eminentlyeve. com/category/zimbabwe-travel-tips/zimbabwe-responsibletravel-and-ecotourism-tips/. DR: On your website, there is an article titled, "3 reasons why travelling is not a luxury but a need especially in Zimbabwe". In this article you posed a question and l quote, "Does charity not begin at home?". How do you convince people in Zimbabwe especially when most seem not to meet the basic level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

ARTIST LOUNGE II:

EE: I do not quite aim to convince people but rather encourage those who come across my website articles and/or social media posts to tour the conservation-oriented destinations we have in the country in order to learn more about nature, support conservation projects, help create employment in the country and enjoy an intimate life with nature. (In the same article you have referred to I go in depth on the benefits of having intimacy with nature in my second point ). In Zimbabwe the majority of the population literally live from hand to mouth and many others live in dire poverty. I do not believe that those people in this bracket income can afford data for social media considering how expensive it is. Therefore, when I create content, I am talking to someone who can afford data or where they are able to use WiFi. They may not necessarily be rich or have money readily available to travel but there is at least some form of income. In such a case we can discuss budgeting, saving for a trip and also the best destination options that suit their budget. If this group of Zimbabweans travel enough, the game parks would not continue to struggle as they are at present. As a result there would be increased employment in the tourism sector as there would be a lot of potential, and that domino effect would go some way to helping our unemployed. The second product would be an opportunity to discuss with destination owners and management teams to organise a day which they can open to a certain number of local residents who are living from hand to mouth or in dire poverty so that they too can learn more about conservation on the ground. I am also happy that some of the game parks, even though they are struggling financially, are already sending some of the less privileged people in the destination's vicinity to school (including up to tertiary level) and helping them to get employment where they can. They also tend to employ those living in dire poverty in the nearby communities which is helping to alleviate some poverty in the communities. So, paying forward is something many conservation oriented destinations aim to do and are already doing.

DR: For those that are low-income earners, how then do you convince them to travel on a budget? Is it even possible to do so? EE: As stated previously my goal is not to convince but rather to create a platform where we can discuss and encourage each other to enjoy our country through ecotourism, reap the benefits of having intimacy with nature and also conserve our wildlife and environment, especially being a low income earner myself as well. The key thing is to always live within one's means. Instead of being envious or pressurizing one's self when seeing fancy pictures of the luxurious accommodation options in the country, be encouraged to work towards elevating your financial status but still being comfortable to stay at the more affordable destinations. It is also important to travel locally, meaning that if you are in Masvingo visit conservation-oriented destinations that are in Masvingo. This applies to wherever one is based in the country. I know that a lot of destinations are unknown and that is one of my objectives - to find these destinations and add them to the website so that they are readily available when searched for on the internet. I have shared many tips on budget travel which are specific and detailed on the following link https://www.eminentlyeve.com/category/zimbabwe-travel-tips/zimbabwe-budget-travel-tips/. EMINENTLY EVE WILDLIFE, ENVIRONMENT AND ECOTOURISM

DR: What is domestic ecotourism? Which is the most sought-after destination in Zimbabwe and why? EE: Domestic tourism is "tourism involving residents of one country travelling only within that country" and Ecotourism means "responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education". From the requests I get I would say the Eastern Highlands is the most sought after destination in terms of domestic ecotourism. I believe this is because most Travel Content Creators have written about it, thereby creating certain hype around it. This hype leaves the potential travelers feeling curious and eager to have their own first-hand experience of these destinations. Most local travelers are also looking to have a number of experiences on a single trip so a place like the Eastern Highlands has been marketed so well by Travel Content Creators in terms of highlighting the various activities one can engage in whilst there. The activities are actually not offered on one property by one organisation or company, but they are dotted all over the highlands thereby making travelers feel that they will have way

more value for their money if they visit the Eastern Highlands than other regions. Since Travel Content Creators are not traditional marketers and are considered to be expert travelers by potential tourists (both local and international), more people find inspiration from them and travel in response to their reviews and recommendations. Travel Content Creator marketing is one marketing strategy being used worldwide including regionally by countries like South Africa, Zambia and others. My encouragement to destination owners in the different parts of Zimbabwe would therefore be for them to come together, region and region, and then work with Travel Content Creators. people are watching or not, or whether you are getting paid or not. This is important because at first (with regards to being a travel content creator in specific) you are going to be sponsoring your own trips without any compensation or payment and if travelling is done too often it can become extremely expensive. So if it is not something that is already a part of your life to a certain extent, it is not going to be sustainable. You also have to be smart about it because there are so many ways of cutting costs while still delivering high quality results. You have to dedicate some time every single day to learn something new so that you continue perfecting your work and learning more ways to make it sustainable. It is vital to make sure that you are always in a position where you are able to turn down certain offers and/or partnerships if they do not align with your objectives, mission or vision or for any other reasons. So, you really have to be passionate, driven and true to your goals. DR: Where can people find you on social media? Promotion of the works of upcoming talented young artists emerging from Africa`s developing nations is the main reason behind the existence of the brand name VaChikepe: The Poet. The young people coming up together have through time had the opportunity to organize themselves and be creative in various artistry areas that not only include writing and poetry but music, fine art and sculpture as well. Among other things, publishing written works to the world at large has been an endeavour that this very first anthology volume, to come from a united stable, has made a reality. To these inspired artists, each coming and passing day has served to be for sharpening writing skills and motivating one another to keep surging forward towards greatness with a lot of faith. The compilation is, therefore, to a greater extent unedited to maintain originality and each writer’s style, and will serve as a lasting reminder of how from humble beginnings thoughts and raw talent were exhibited with conviction and self-motivation to help inform and change or shape the world positively through poetry. Emotional Evolution: Thoughts by Pikitayi

by Angela Pikitayi Rugara (Author)

Through the journey of life, I aspired for success in the jungle of politics, economics and technology. Having walked that path I retired from formal employment to embark on a new adventure in art. Unbeknown to me that was where my passion was buried all along. I have never been afraid of failing, but always love to try out new things that rouse my passion. So I decided to write poetry in the hope of capturing lives and the feelings therein. Is it not humanity’s deepest need to know that we are all connected? This gathered record of poems seeks to show emotional evolution experienced, not only by the seeker of art but by a stranger walking alone; the friend who misses; and the mother who believed she was unseen. The greatest intent of this work being: It’s okay for one to express themselves as they feel. If you cannot talk then write. If you cannot fight for those in pain then speak for them. In my culture, we are often very private about how we feel. The natural answer when someone asks how we are is “Fine or okay.” These two words hide a lot of unexpressed emotions as people often give answers to one of those words with a smile. I have seen smiles with sad eyes. As you read on I hope you find yourself and others in these poems. Click here to order VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

When the Doc went into psychology she didn't think that she was the kind of person to compromise her values for a farfetched possibility of finding love. It is for those compromises that she is attacked and left for dead. Any of the addicts, sleepwalkers or struggling couples that make up her patient list could have done it. Is her near-death a bid to silence a dark secret or is it karma for her indiscretions? Besides being a goodie-too-shoes, judgmental, snobbish, at times pretentious woman, Lin, always thought that hers was the perfect marriage, if only with a few problems. When she lost her baby she thought therapy would heal her marriage. Instead, it is during therapy that she discovered that she and her husband might not be perfect. From Mark's perspective, it was in therapy that he lost everything that he believed of himself and what if he never finds any substance to himself, besides, he is a murderer and thief. THE JOURNEY BEGINS WHEN YOU CATCH THEM YOUNG: Story of Nina ‘The Bus Driver’

T

he best thing one can do is to follow one’s heart. It does not matter at what age one is, what matters is that one does not tire or give up. Not everyone would love seeing you do what you love most, and sometimes it’s not because of jealousy but it is the worry and concern of the choices one has made. This is so because at times these people would have experienced the same negative effects of your choices or seen somebody in that predicament. But for Nina, her potential was discovered by a relative who encouraged her. However, there were people who out of love, were concerned about her choice to be a bus driver. Now sit back, relax and enjoy Nina’s ride:

“I first started driving at the young age of eight years. My uncle saw my desire and started teaching me how to drive in the family yard, backing up and driving forward until I got older and my legs were longer to reach the pedal. I took driver’s education in school and got my learner’s permit to drive. It wasn’t until I completed high school that I finally got my driver’s license to drive independently. One day in my travels I saw this lady driving a tractor VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

trailer truck. Since I love to travel I figured the only way to see the United States, was to get a class A license and become a tractor-trailer driver. Once I finished school to become a tractor-trailer driver, I immediately went on the road to see the United States. What an experience it was. Before moving to another state I decided that it was time that I had an additional license. So once again I went to training to become a motor-coach operator so as to be able to drive a bus. My family was not pleased about me becoming a tractor-trailer driver or a bus driver. They knew it meant a lot of lonely trips with me being on the road without them to help me or assist me in time of need. I went on to pursue my dream. Getting my license to become a tractor-trailer driver was a challenge. For some reason, there are more tests for females as compared to males. I learnt about every part of a truck and trailer and how to react in case of an accident. Becoming a motorcoach operator was not as difficult since I already had the experience of being on the road driving from state to state. 49

ARTIST LOUNGE III: NINA 'THE BUS DRIVER' THE JOURNEY BEGINS WHEN YOU CATCH THEM YOUNG

My main concern with being a bus driver was customer assistance. Yes, there are challenges driving a motor-coach vehicle, however they are not as severe as driving a tractor-trailer where you always have to be mindful of other drivers on the road. You have to be able to react very quickly, always be watching from side to side anticipating when a driver or even a person is crossing walk. Being a motor-coach operator is challenging because you have over 50 people that you are responsible for and you’re saying to yourself safety safety safety comes first. Customer service is also a challenge because you have 50 different personalities on the bus with 50 different attitudes. You need to be mindful of the fact that the customer is always right even if they’re wrong, you have to act accordingly. My typical day starts at 5 am in the morning. After getting ready for work I go out to: pre-trip the bus; check everything to make sure it is in working order; make sure the bus is clean and that there’s nothing in the customers’ way that could pose as a danger getting on or off the bus. Once I arrive at the staging point where I pick up the customers, I always start my day off with a prayer. I have a regular route which means that virtually I see the same people every day, hence we become friends. They always have many different stories to tell, I always listen and try to keep a positive attitude and give them excellent outlook on life. I smile with them; I laugh with them and sometimes I feel their sorrows and I try to encourage them. When they need prayer, I silently pray for them. 50

In our line of work there will always be someone that will be rude or just plain out mean to you. I never raise my voice at them, and I tell myself that they had a bad morning and are taking it out on me. I remain calm and always speak softly. I never raise my voice because anger only begets anger. I have never had to call the police and had someone removed from the bus because they were being unruly. I always let them know that rules are rules and are meant to be followed. They are put in place for our protection. I always try to give passengers a warm smile, greet them with a loving, ‘hello, how are you?’ in the morning or, ‘how was your day?’ later in the day. It never hurts to be friendly and to show that you care for their well-being. My advice to any women out there who want to be a motor-coach operator, a bus driver or even a tractor-trailer driver is: believe it; achieve it and never give up. The journey may be hard at times, but with God by your side you cannot fail. Safe travels and God bless.” In this month of May, we celebrate Mother’s day. l encourage all women to be inspired by Nina’s story. Do not be discouraged because you are a woman. It is time for you to rise up and take that ride to your destiny. Interview By DrThembieTanya madziwathembie@gmail.com +263719675521 VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

"The unique selling point has been my ability to work seamlessly with different promoters and partners. The likes of E Man, Cheesboy Entertainment, Kivo Santana who is UK based and now known by the name Shisaka. I made myself to be trusted from the onset by providing artists with correct services they expected. I believe in a way it also broadened my selling point. Now I observe that whenever several artists see me hosting a show there is a tendency for them to feel secure and know what to expect." 55

"I hold a certificate in digital marketing but my experience has come mostly from being able to attend continuous professional development workshops which are regularly held here in South Africa. Indeed, like they say, experience is the best teacher I have been show hosting for 10 years now in Johannesburg and networking with different promoters has proven to be instrumental a lot. Being able to host 56

multilingual artists ranging from South African, Malawi, Nigeria and Zimbabwe as well as learning multiple cultures as part of day to day delivery of successful shows, has improved my standing a whole lot more around the circles." tainment as I have already partly alluded to above was created by Tapuwa Shiridzinomwa, who in the process managed to engage my services. It's where at that point when he found it of necessity to have a proper registered and branded company whose name stood for promoting music shows. From day one we both have remained passionate about both at the local and international scene. We have not only focused on the promotion of Zimdancehall as we have at some point hosted the likes of Bennieman. The aim has been that of blending Zimbabwe based music onto the international forum." "Music show hosting and promotion is a long and involving process. Firstly, you have to develop the idea and concept of the show and budget before event for the following itemized list: -Venue hire -Posters -PA system -Stage -Security guards -Generator -Licence to promote upcoming event -Staff -Tickets for sale on the day -Radio, television and social media adverts -Transport of artists -Negotiating and arranging contracts Secondly, during the event you just have to make sure the program goes according to plan or schedule. The show has to be successful at all costs especially through making sure everyone is doing his or her assigned task/s. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

Lastly, post-event the guest artists and staff should all be home safe. In other words I am the first one to arrive and last to leave the event venue." "If you ask me, I would say my best show experience so far has to be the one which hosted Bennieman at Newton music factory. It was an incredible experience being able to spend a week with my child hero learning and discussing about music. On the contrary, the worst show has to be the grand opening of house of Shisaka club, that show was billed and promised to be successful event but due to electricity load shedding and our generator failing to prove equal to the task, we had to cancel the show earlier than planned at 9 pm and ended up refunding the patrons their money." Change happens to be the below constant: I only managed to host the late great Oliver Mutukudzi and Aleck Macheso. Of course, there are changes I have witnessed between the older generation and the rising and upcoming Zimdancehall artists. With the likes of "Tuku" and "Baba Sharo" work used to be more demanding due to the show hosting live bands whereas with most Zimdancehall artists if not 90 percent of them use backtracks. So, in terms of professionalism and taking their craft seriously our Sungura elders were on point. With the current crop allow me to safely say it's 50/50. I still feel it's a learning curve for them, things take time. Also, it's like fashion changes. Now there is too much social media and it works both sides bad and good." 57

On day to day operational environment challenges and what the future prospects and upcoming events: "The Covid-19 inspired lockdowns really were a nightmare for us promoters. I personally think the music industry was the hardest hit. As such, lifting the lockdown has been a revelation, for promoters' fortunes have changed since the numbers of people attending shows have increased. As promoters, show attendances have reminded us that people really missed live shows." "Last but not least, the future has been the goal from the start with us trying to blend Zim music onto the International scene so that we can host a Zimdancehall events in South Africa. The fact that we have all types of nations attending our shows just like Amapiano is doing is motivating us the more." A CONVERSATION WITH JOANNE DURHAM MAPPING THE FUTURE WITH WORDS THAT UNITE

I

n 1839 Edward Bulwer-Lytton proposed the notion which states that "The pen is mightier than the sword." Centuries later his words still carry relevance. It is an idea which practised, would end the brokenness we as earth dwellers have created for ourselves. To reflect more on the impact of words on the page, for this issue we will be engaging in a conversation with Joanne Durham, an award-winning poet and the author of To Drink from a Wider Bowl. Here is what she had to say:

'I grew up in a mostly white, middle working-class neighbourhood right outside of Washington DC, USA. I always loved poetry and wrote it, even as a child. I don’t know why I was drawn to poetry. I needed some form of artistic exploration and words were the most accessible form for me. As a teacher of children from diverse backgrounds, I collected all the poems I could find by poets of different cultures and countries and read poetry with my kids everyday, and even without my prompting, they too started to write poems. Except for some poems I published in teaching journals, I never really considered sending my work out beyond my circle of friends and family. But after I retired, I decided to finally VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

focus on my writing. Then the pandemic hit, and despite the terrible tragedies it brought, I was able to take workshops from poets I greatly admired online, join critique groups with poets all over the US and even other countries, and start to write regularly and publish my poems in many online and print journals. All that led to my first poetry book, To Drink from a Wider Bowl, winning the Sinclair Poetry Prize and being published by Evening Street Press on April 1, 2022. I also have a chapbook forthcoming from Kelsay Books. Once I began to focus on writing, poems started emerging from so many everyday experiences. Maps was written after I received a wall-sized map of the world in the mail from Doctors Without Borders. I thought, “What should I do with this lovely, informative map?” It made me think how much more connected our world might be if everyone had a map of the world in their home. Buying A globe started with my three-year-old grandson’s confusion about the meaning of north and south. I decided to buy him a globe, and when I went online to look for one, there were all these amazing reviews! The poem just about wrote itself from their comments. 63

WORDS IN VERSE III: POETRY ANALYSIS JOANNE DURHAM

The poem in some ways, reflects my own journey from innocence to reality and my commitment to keep working for a more just society, despite all the obstacles. I grew up in a loving, middle-class home where I believed that if I was a good person, good things would happen to me. But as I reached adolescence and young adulthood in the 1960s and 1970s, during the Vietnam War, civil rights protests, and the women’s movement, I began to understand that our lives are shaped by the politics and culture we live in as much or more than our individual choices. I realized that most people all over the world have the same aspirations and needs, but everyone doesn’t have the same opportunities to meet them. The amazing thing about writing this poem was that these lines were all based on real comments from people who bought globes online and reviewed them. 64

as China. Americans demand borders between states, not shown on any other country. Globes crack in careless hands. One globe arrived with two southern hemispheres. The owner thought it an improvement, didn’t send it back. (excerpt from Buying a Globe for my grandson during the pandemic) All I did was put their comments together so that their metaphorical meaning became apparent. Of course, Americans would be the ones to expect special privileges, even on a map (!), and call for borders we imposed to claim other people’s original lands. Colonialization occurred more fully from north to south so I imagine many people in the southern hemisphere might welcome a world without the north bearing down on them. Someone did complain about a physically cracked globe; I couldn’t resist turning it into a metaphor for how we treat both our fragile planet and each other in it. The other poem, Maps, takes me back to the time when I taught elementary school for many years near Washington DC. The schools were composed of African-American, American children and first or second-generation immigrants from all over the world, many refugees of war, famine, or other catastrophes. We spent a lot of time learning about each other’s backgrounds and cultures, through shared food, games, stories, and of course maps! Children can be beautifully compassionate when they recognize their connections and see differences as wondrous and enriching. If nine-year-olds can understand the power and joys of unity without being all the same, maybe adults could learn it too. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

Both of these poems are included in my poetry book, To Drink from a Wider Bowl. The book traces my journey through life, my experiences as a child, adolescent, woman, mother, teacher, activist, and grandparent. The title comes from the first poem, Old Folks, which ends with “ we are thirsty still/but drink _from_ a wider bowl .” I hope my book resonates with the desire in most people to live as fully awake and caring towards one another and our planet as possible. To end I would say, I am in awe of young poets who have full-time jobs and children at home and still pursue their writing. I never accomplished that, so I can’t offer any worthwhile advice! But I did keep journals all those years and jotted down bits and pieces of things to write about or first draft poems. So, when I finally got to serious writing, I had a lot to draw from. Therefore, I would say, write however and whenever you can, and share your work with other poets who will treat it respectfully but honestly. Writing may be solitary, but the community has been huge in sustaining and encouraging me. I can be reached through my website: https://www.joannedurham.com/. BUYING A GLOBE FOR MY GRANDSON DURING THE PANDEMIC He can’t comprehend how north means anything but sky, thinks south is underground. So I search online – elephants trumpet across Tanzania on talking globes, the Eiffel Tower illuminates all of Europe. Customer reviews dim the flashy displays - irate Indian buyers, their birthplace mapped as China. Americans demand borders between states, not shown on any other country. Globes crack in careless hands. One globe arrived with two southern hemispheres. The owner thought it an improvement, didn’t send it back. I long for a brick-and-mortar store, to know if names of distant rivers are large enough to read. Feel the relief of the Himalayas. Spin tilted stands to test their resilience, lands joined in a blue blur. I’m not giving up the search for a perfect world for my grandson. hould Tawanda Chiuswa aka Vinny On One open up and say, "Believe you me for creativity knows me by name" it just will be a bone of no contention. His musical works speaks volumes and are one of a kind so uniquely mastered and delivered to our listenership and viewership scenery. He says, "I am DJ/Producer. As a DJ, I am very versatile. I play many genres though I am starting to narrow my sets to Tribal and Afro Tech House Music.”

As a Producer I do collaborations with instrument players and singers. So far, I have over 20 music collaborations. I am based in Edmonton, Canada and I have been doing music professionally since 2013. I have always been someone who liked music as I was growing up and I listened to a wide variety of music including country music. In my early twenties, I started to DJ at home and I didn't think of taking 'Djing' a step further up until 2013 when I decided to take formal lessons. Once I was confident enough with my mixing, I started playing at some bars, live shows, parties even if I wasn't getting paid. In approximately a year later some gigs started coming through. I have been learning each and every time and do live sessions online also.

promoter too. As I was getting my ways around in 'DJing', I have made good relationships with artists and producers from different parts of the world. I would share their work on my platforms and at times I would even play their songs on national radio. For someone to do music you need to have love for it and don't expect to just make money. As for collaborations, you can survive without them. It all depends on the music you are producing, some producers are vocalist too. I have released 14 collaborations with other producers and vocalists. Collaborations bring in different skill sets, and I fuse them all into 1 song. However, it's a challenge doing collaborations since people have different life schedules, so you have to keep doing follow ups. All my releases so far are singles, though I am working on releasing 2 albums, first album is just different kind of house music with vocals. Second album is Afrotech and Tribal house music only. If all goes well, I set to release my 1st House music album "Ground breaker" before the end of May 2022.

As a producer, I got a tip from my friend DJ Losa who suggested starting to make my own music as a way of growing my following. Till today, I have made so many collaborations with artists from different countries and I am hoping to be able to sign some artists under my label Vinny On One Entertainment. The above said and done, my favorite 3 singles are Vamos Tribale, Here and Mhanya. As for Vamos Tribale, I got a producer (Ntsakobeats) in South Africa to make the beat. For vocals I used an artist found online and for the Congas I used a professional named Pepe Rodriguez from Spain.

As For Here, I used 2 producers one of them is Masterkey based here in Canada, on Vocals Stephanie French based here in Canada, Saxophone Chris Harvey based in USA and Ntsakobeats based in South Africa. Notably, contributing artists were in 3 countries, South Africa, Canada and USA. On this single, instruments were live too except the drum pattern. I built the song instrument by instrument same like Mhanya.

The former is trending as people are extremely liking it on social media pages. You may click here to access the song 'Africa Unite'

Last but not least is Mhanya, it was released on April 23, 2022 and I called upon Munya Mataruse, King Ramon, Masterkey and Enoch Piroro. Notably the artists are in Canada though they originate from 3 countries namely Zimbabwe, Angola and Nigeria. To those with a good memory Enoch Piroro was the late legendary Oliver Mutukudzi's bass guitarist whereas Munya Mataruse also played acoustic guitar for Oliver. Those observant will of course notice that the instruments I used to make Mhanya song were live instruments except drum pattern. By and large, this single is different because it's live music and so far I have made 2 songs like that.

oets are human beings, they go through challenges in life like everyone else. One such poet is Thato Naleli Rannana, the author of a recently published book called Me, Myself and Art: This is my story through pages. Instead of running away from her past, the young author decided to write about it for reasons she best describes in this interview.

WHEN POETRY IS ANYTHING: And anything is everything

“Like most teenagers in my country or I should say in my continent, I faced challenges in my adolescence. Therefore, I decided to pen them down because it was the only therapy I could get from all the issues I faced during my teen days. I wrote poem after poem, page after page. This was the only thing that made sense at the time, hence l kept writing everything I felt and went through. After writing for 4 years, I decided to compile my poems into a book. My inspiration sprung from the fact that I could not keep such poems to myself, they needed to get out. They needed to be seen and heard by other teenagers like me, however, the book is not limited to teenagers only. Publishing the book took a month and a few weeks because I submitted my manuscript in December last year to Word Ink Creative Agency and it was completed in February this year. Thankfully, l did not face any challenges with the book from writing to having it published. The book is about a young teenager facing a lot of challenges, changes, developments, disappointments, and rejections. Specifically, it is about the personal experience of a young girl from the age of 17 to 20. See the book back cover for more details.

The book also comes with a disk which contains a few recorded poems. I have realized that most people don't really like reading especially long poems. Therefore, listening to the pieces makes it easier and better. Also on recording poems, its another way of enhancing my portfolio as an artist and this could come in handy in the future. Poetry in written form is ordered, structured, contained and follows some rules. Recorded or spoken poetry is free and allows both the artist and the listener to feel something. It invokes better feelings than written poetry. This is one of the reasons why I chose to record some of the poems. As an artist, I do not favor any of the above forms because for me anything that works does work. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

Unfortunately, the book is only available in physical format at the moment. I would love it to have it available in other formats and also for it to be found online for purchase purposes. To my fans and my readers who are looking forward to my new book, please don't be harsh in judging me. Learn from the book, it was made for artists in every spectrum to be free and to learn that it's ok to release and expose their feelings. The book is no longer about me or mine now that it's getting to the people. Everyone should hold it like they are looking in the mirror, not merely learning about me but learning about themselves. I would love them to believe in themselves.” Be inspired through the life of Thato as written in the book and believe that there is greatness in you and one day you will find home, hope and positive energy in ‘you, yourself and art’. THE NARRATIVE : AT THE END OF A CORRIDOR

AT THE END OF A CORRIDOR

I

t was something like "Cherokees of the South-West, for example regarded the earth as _a great island floating in a sea of waters..._ " I didn't finish the sentence, I was about to scratch my chin, thinking about the first words I had just read but I didn't get a chance to think. I don't remember if someone walked in or what. "Ma'am, everyone is waiting for you," a stout grey haired middle-aged man in a white knee length coat bowed down after saying these words. His arms both hidden on his back. Was he shackled or hiding something like a pistol? No, no, no, wait! My mind was giving me a warning. Where the hell was Confucius summoning me to? Sillyness will be the death of me, the man in front of me wasn't Confucius. I forced a snowman smile and took a white coat that was hung on a hook, mine or not l don't quite remember well. Remembering is something I often do when I get free time which I never got, get the sense? I put on the coat and followed the man along an endless corridor in loud silence. I hated it and to be honest I was looking forward to something like trotting in a maze. I was like a sheep on the way to a slaughter house. I was already wandering in my mind when 86

we abruptly came to a halt. I almost toppled over for my eyes had a habit of accompanying my mind to deepest places where I usually go when I feel like performing harakiri. With eyes closed, I sniffed at the back of the man's grey haired big head. He was punching buttons on the door in front of him. I wasn't aware till the doors were wide open. I took a few steps back as if in shock and my eyeballs went rolling above the door where they hit a board with bold letters written, "EARTH SCIENCE."I was like what the heck! He was waiting patiently to usher me inside and I shoved back my weird behavior and followed him into a room that looked like a swan's nest. Everyone in the room was wearing a white coat, their faces were glowing with enthusiasm as if they were waiting for a circus show to begin. Why were they looking at me as if I was a guest of honor? What if I turned out to be a guest of horror? Though I often tell myself there's no such a thing called a wrong place, it seems I was feeling like a fish out of water. I felt like I was at the core of a wrong place but at the right time. VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

THE NARRATIVE:

AT THE END OF A CORRIDOR NGONIDZASHE MHIZHA

Nervousness was gnawing my bony body as I sank in a comfy rocking chair. Something warm was rising inside me and I was afraid of being electrocuted on that damn rocking thing. I rolled my eyes and sighed as everyone introduced themselves. Here I was, floating amongst great thinkers. A middle-aged woman whatever-her-name introduced herself as a geologist. That's when my sense of hearing vacated for a little while and the word 'gynaecologists' hit my mind swiftly that I found myself bowing down my head looking at my tummy, my hands all over, molding a baby bump. Shucks! I was not pregnant so what was this lady trying to do here. This was not the right time to pull my leg. She winked at me and repeated what she had just said. Oooh! Foolish me! They didn't mind waiting for me to introduce myself. They knew I was just a brainless moron stuck among them, I guess. I stood zombified as the words I had just read earlier flashed on a big screen in my mind. That oldie had disturbed me and dragged me here. Below the words read "MAY THEME." I don't wear spectacles, but a pair was hung on that narrow bone of my nose. I used my middle finger to push the invisible spectacles up and the gesture was really cool! They all shared their opinions about the earth, it's creation, shape and so much more. The whole time I was tapping my right foot on the floor. Frankly their vocabulary was too heavy for my brain. What was I going to say? Earth science wasn't my thing, I only knew a bit about earthworms and earthmovers. I didn't know if it applied to the theme. I was scratching every nerve VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

in my body for the courage to stand up and unleash my meaningless opinions. When everyone was done, their eyes were glued on me. I hated their smiles, I turned red. No l did not blush! I stood up and cleared my throat, what else could I have done. Embarrassment grew on me. I was looking at everyone above my invisible spectacles, scratching my chin. "Regardless of it's shape and form, I think the earth is just a mere maze that leads everything in it to a bottomless dark pit. By everything, I mean everything including every one of us. What matters the most is how we deal with the hurdles in that maze. However, I think it doesn't matter because we all are going to be swallowed by the earth, one by one .We're all unaware that we're rushing and competing to become fossils. Ahhhhh! ...” I had to breathe, I was slipping off topic. I felt a cool wave of air on my back, was l sweating or my coat had mysteriously got wet? The air conditioning system was worsening the situation and l sneezed hard. My ‘spectacles’ were about to fall off because something was poking my nose. I struggled to open my puffy eyes. My three year old naughty son had pulled my blankets away, dont know why. He was grinning and stupidly poking my nose with his little finger. I yawned like a cat and gave him a warning look before I rushed out of the bedroom. I had lost track of time. My calendar and my to-do list had crashed! With eyes closed I smiled and whispered, "earth science." By Ngonidzashe Mhizha 0785056703 87

INSPIRED LIFE NUGGETS WITH FRANK NYAMUNDERO FEELING UNDESERVING - THE CATALYST TO AN UNSATISFIED LIFE "Self-pity is our worst enemy and if we yield to it, we can never do anything good in the world." ~Helen Keller

T

here are times when you feel, I am not good enough, or I don’t really deserve to be this or have certain things in life. Though with days passing by, you take time as you reflect on your life and come to realize there is more to it than just looking down upon your own self. The greatest discovery will be to know that no one is not good enough, you are unique and special. Life’s circumstances at times create this fake perception about who you really are and gives you the inferior you to shine more than what you anticipate to be. A lot of peoples' dreams have been destroyed, crumbled and have had a premature death because the individual embraced the fake perceptions that they aren’t good enough as created by life’s circumstances.

The feeling of not being good enough takes away one’s confidence in who they are, what they can do or where they want reach in life, 94

FRANK NYAMUNDERO FRANKSPIRATION

"building dreams into a lasting legacy" feeling sorry for yourself will never give you anything profitable to your life. Some have stopped themselves from being achievers in life because they have continuously felt sorry for themselves, they keep thinking that others are the ones who deserve the best. They view them as too good to have the best in life actually they opt for the second best. Dreams, visions are killed because one lets self-pity take control over them, thus taking away the willingness to even give it a try because one sees not worthy to. The thought that I am not good enough, who am I to become this, someone deserves better, is what takes away everything from you. This will lead to a total disarming of all your willingness or the desire to at least give a try. It’s not about how others feel sorry for you that will demean you. Self-pity is in every one of us, there is a time when we have or face stiff competition or we have people who seem to be better off than us. It all comes to an individual’s choice to yield to or resist it. Most of us yield to it on the basis that we think we have no other option in life but just to keep feeling sorry for ourselves. Nothing will change in any way in your life if you VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

keep being at that stage of thinking you aren’t good enough. This can only bring total anger at others who might seem to be achieving something or the system leading for one not to be accountable for their actions. Those who feel pity for themselves are very good at blaming their lack of success on others. In my life, I have come to deeply understand that whatever the world says or thinks of you will only be effective if you accept it. The world’s negativity feeds on your own negativity to become more real, so if you feel pity for yourself the world will increase its pity towards you. This all leads to the destruction of one’s self and their life destiny. Your greatest enemy in life is yourself, so step out from self-pity and start to believe in your own capabilities as you walk towards achieving the success that satisfies you. ZIMUNAMATO (A VERY BIG PRAYER):

Book review of BORN AGAIN SALVATION by Pastor Mbongeni: Summarisation of chapters 1-3 96

VACHIKEPE AND THE 100 SAILORS: 08.05.2022

UNLOCKING GREATNESS:

PASTOR MBONGENI MOTIVATIONAL SERMON

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this book is to give you an assurance of what salvation is. Everything else falls under salvation and without it everything is worthless. Some people liken salvation to many things like going to church, being water baptized, living by the word of God, doing good and trying to live right which could be of no use if salvation is not established first. All this is good as long they come after salvation.

Chapter One WHAT IS SALVATION

It is the most important decision anyone can ever make on earth. It is a decision that affects your eternity. It is the greatest miracle to take place in a person’s life. It is greater than any other miracle because it will determine the quality of life you will live here on earth and later on in eternity. Salvation is to turn away from your own sinful ways and accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.

Chapter Two WHY SHOULD YOU BE SAVED.

The day we were born on this earth we were born with a sinful nature from the first man Adam which causes us to do things which we do not necessarily want to do. We need to be saved so that our old sinful nature can be removed and we receive the new nature. It is the nature of Christthat causes us to become Christians. Chapter three HOW CAN YOU BE SAVED Jesus is the Saviour, He is the One who saves people from their sins. Acts 4 vs 12 tells us that there is no other name that has been given in which we must be saved. For you to be saved you need to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. You confess Him as lord of your life and believe that God raised Him from the dead according to Romans 10 verse 9 and 10. Click here to get a copy of the book By Pastor Mbongeni T. AHOY SAILOR:

T

WHAT IS THE HUNDRED SAILORS?

he Hundred Sailors is an organization founded by Takudzwa Chikepe and has become a home to many -- different -- artists from different geographical locations etcetera. As they say; “love knows no boundaries,” so the same can be said about art, as strangers have become one, all in the spirit of art. The group carries a few handfuls of members, pocketful of souls and bucketful of love and the zeal to support the vision will mean that by the time we reach the end of the tunnel, the light will be held by many hands. The Hundred Sailors has different groups namely; VaChikepe and The Hundred Sailors, The Sailors Club, The Sailors Review Team (in charge of The Sailors Review which comes out fortnightly beginning), The Sailors Music Collection and also The International Sailors Affiliates.

VISION

Grooming world class artists through appreciating poetry and other forms of Art.

MISSION

Our mission is to publish the power of poetry and promote other forms of Art by creating a sustainable workstation for artists, to fully connect with each other and the world at large.

HOW TO JOIN main vhs THE GROUP

As regards subscribing and being part of The Hundred Sailors, new and existing members should each aim at paying USD24 for 2022. Starts with a deposit of USD6 or USD12 at first then consistently and flexibly paying USD2 at the start of each month. The required subscription fee is not for The Trust Fund board, but for The Hundred Sailors as it gives us the financial muscle to tackle any challenge which may be dressed in the costume which we may refer to as ‘need.’

BENEFITS OF SUBSCRIBING TO THE HUNDRED SAILORS TRUST FUND

1

As subscribed Sailors we have our works marketed regularly through the Sailors Review and other avenues.

Building artsists with humility, transparency, teamwork and trust.

3

There are synergistic benefits of belonging in an established Poetry, Music and Arts ensemble. 1+1=3 which is what synergy is and 1+1=1 which is a meeting of our minds on all Art works. A chance to be on international tours and to mix with Artists of resonance.

5

Raise our artistry skills bar by participating in regular in-house and outdoor competitions amongst fellow subscribed Sailors. Being a subscribed Sailor is also an entry point to trainings and seminars whenever arranged by the Hundred Sailors Trust Fund. Our published Poetry and Articles are edited and proof read.

7

2 4 6

In each year we have anthologies published through Publisher T.P Chikepe (Pvt) Ltd and it is us the subscribing Sailors that are prioritized. For us there is first priority placement to opportunities that arise e.g being given the first chance to perform throughout in-house or external functions hosted or graced by us as the Hundred Sailors ensemble.
