To the 29th edition of The Beaconsfield Local Directory the sister directory of the Amersham, Chesham, GX & Farnhams Berkhamsted, Missenden & Hazlemere, The Chalfonts, Tring and Apsley & Bovingdon Local Directory.

February 2016 already and this year is a leap year. Leap years synchronize the calendar year with the solar year. Leap Years are needed to keep our modern day Gregorian Calendar in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days – or 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds – to circle once around the Sun. This is called a tropical year.

However, the Gregorian calendar has only 365 days in a year, so if we didn’t add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours off our calendar every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days.

February is also the most romantic month of the year as our front cover picture depicts. The celebration of St Valentine’s Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of the Valentine’s day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Several theories surround the history of Valentine’s Day. Who will be your Valentine?

Lastly don’t forget Shrove Tuesday which is on 9th February this year and is the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent. Lent is a period of 40 days before Easter when people often give up or stop eating things that are bad for them like chocolate or fast food. Enjoy those pancake but what will you give up for Lent?

Raynaud’s Phenomenon: It’s Not Just Cold Toes.

Raynaud’s Phenomenon (Raynaud’s Disease or often just ‘Raynaud’s’) isn’t well-known, yet it affects around 20% of adults worldwide, and shouldn’t be ignored. That’s why February is Raynaud’s Awareness Month.

What Is Raynaud’s Phenomenon?

Raynaud’s is a condition in which blood supply to extremities is interrupted.

Attacks are caused by oversensitivity of small blood vessels, and while fingers and toes are most commonly affected, it also affects the ears, nose, lips and nipples. tRIggeRs and Causes Primary Raynaud’s The causes of Primary Raynaud’s are unclear, although the NHS estimates that 1 in 10 sufferers go on to develop a condition associated with Secondary Raynaud’s. Attacks are usually triggered by cold temperatures, but anxiety, stress, hormones or smoking can also cause blood vessels to spasm and restrict blood flow to your extremities. secondary Raynaud’s Secondary Raynaud’s is often connected with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, but also results from other medical conditions (including Hepatitis), illegal drug use, some medicines (including

the contraceptive pill and beta-blockers), an injury, or use of a vibrating tool (‘vibration white finger’). symPtoms Symptoms of Raynaud’s can last a few minutes or a few hours, and may be regular or occasional.

Sometimes the condition goes away by itself.

• The restriction of blood to extremities can cause them to turn white, then blue, and finally red as blood flow returns to them.

• Sometimes there may be pins and needles, numbness, swelling, pain or stiffness.

If you have Raynaud’s symptoms, visit your doctor, who can diagnose Raynaud’s and request blood tests to determine the type. It’s important to get Secondary Raynaud’s Phenomenon correctly diagnosed, as in rare cases complications such as gangrene or ulcers arise.

Who gets Raynaud’s? secondary Raynaud’s can occur in anyone, as it’s associated with other conditions and factors. Primary Raynaud’s is usually mild, can occur at any age and may be hereditary. It is: • More common in females than males • Rare in young children • Common in teenagers (although sometimes disappears in their twenties) • More common in smokers (because smoking damages blood vessels and affects smooth muscle). tReatment and PReventIon To prevent Raynaud’s attacks, you can: • stay warm – outdoors,

use scarves, gloves, hats, earmuffs, heated hand warmers and pre-warmed clothes and shoes (use a hair dryer, electric blanket or the airing cupboard). Several thin layers are warmer than one thick one. Wear thin socks and gloves under thicker ones and use hand driers to warm your hands. Indoors, try hot water bottles, microwaveable heat packs, hot baths before bed and an electric blanket.

• stop smoking – smoking affects your blood supply and can reduce your temperature.

• eat for warmth – hot drinks and small regular meals, preferably hot, will keep you energetic and warm. Use oven gloves to remove things from the fridge.

• avoid heavy carrier bags – they restrict blood flow to fingers.

• take regular exercise – providing it doesn’t make symptoms worse.

• Find ways to relax.

Sometimes medication is required if you experience ulcers, intense pain or impaired finger function. In severe cases, sympathectomy procedures using surgery, laser or injection to sever the nerves that cause the blood vessels to spasm may be used, but these vary in permanency and efficacy.

As the weather turns colder, many people start to think more about how to stay healthy and protect themselves from illness. Looking after your hearing is necessary all year round but is particularly important in the winter months, when extreme weather can interfere with your usual level of hearing.

Dig out those Ear Muffs!

Most of us are susceptible to coming down with the common cold during the winter.

Colds are usually more irritating than debilitating, but they can cause temporary hearing problems. People may find that sounds appear muffled, and may notice a clicking sound in their ear or even tinnitus.

Although these symptoms can be worrying, for the most part they clear up along with the cold and have completely disappeared in a couple of weeks.

For the majority of people colds pass quickly, but occasionally the mucus in the middle ear builds up and becomes infected, causing a middle ear infection. These are most common in children (due to their smaller Eustachian tube which allows fresh air into the ear) but it can occur in adults as well.

Otitis media can cause fever, earache and some hearing loss. It mostly clears up on its own, with symptoms medicated with regular pain relief, and only rarely are antibiotics needed. Complications can develop however, such as glue ear or mastoiditis, which should be treated by a doctor.

Hearing Aids & the Cold

If you wear hearing aids it may be worth paying them special attention in the colder months. The condensation that occurs after dramatic temperature changes can damage hearing aids, interfering with the microphone and receiver as well as blocking the earmould tubing. Signs of weather damage could be the aid cutting out during loud noises, sound fading, hearing static and distortion. It is difficult to avoid moisture in the coldest months, but you can purchase a hearing aid drying kit or a dehumidifier. Removing the batteries and storing your aids in this device overnight may help to keep it dry. Additionally, make sure that your cover your ears in the rain and snow and immediately remove the battery if you think your aid may have been exposed to water.

With a little awareness and preparation you can protect your hearing this winter.

Recipe

Palmiers These delicious sweet pastries are easy to make using just a sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry and caster sugar. Serve with coffee, or sandwich together in pairs with jam and whipped double cream for an indulgent dessert.

Ingredients: • 1 x 375g pack ready-rolled puff pastry • 4 tbsp caster sugar • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

TIP For savoury palmiers, spread the pastry with a little pesto sauce, then scatter over finely grated Parmesan cheese instead of the sugar.

Makes approx 28 Ready in 1 hour 20

1. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and trim the edges to a

neat rectangle, if necessary. Sprinkle over 2 tbsp of the caster sugar and half the cinnamon (if using).

Using a rolling pin, gently roll over the sugar to lightly press it into the pastry.

2. Fold in the long sides of the pastry rectangle halfway

towards the centre. Sprinkle over a little more caster sugar and press down with the rolling pin. Fold each long side in again to meet in the centre.

3. Sprinkle with the rest of the sugar and cinnamon

(if using), then fold the pastry in half lengthways to form one long strip. Transfer to a board and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

4. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Dampen a large baking sheet by sprinkling with cold water.

5. Cut across the chilled pastry length into about 28

thin slices. Place the slices, cut-side down, on the baking sheet. Flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hand.

6. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until

crisp and golden brown. Turn each slice over with a palette knife halfway through cooking. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

We recently had a few issues in the Holtspur area of Beaconsfield with youths from the Wycombe area attending and causing problems. They are friends of some of the youth in our neighbourhood and all together they were causing anti social behaviour (ASB). Having identified a number of the youths from Wycombe PCSO Dee Hawkes liaised with the ASB team and between them we have managed to stop one of them coming to Beaconsfield due to his behaviour. We are now doing the same with more of the youths. We work very closely with other police areas and agencies so this is an excellent result for us, and we have already seen an improvement in the area.

SCAMMERS TARGET FACEBOOK USERS WITH ‘DISLIKE’ BUTTON SCAM Scammers have capitalised on Mark Zuckerberg’s recent announcement that Facebook have been working on a ‘dislike’ button. Not long after his announcement, links and apps offering the fake ‘dislike’ button began spreading across the world’s most popular social media platform. Facebook does not have an official ‘dislike’ button, any app, profile or website offering one is a scam. If you see posts saying you have been chosen by Facebook to test its ‘new’ button they are also scams. Don’t click any of these links.

CRIME PREVENTION We started our Winter Burglary Plan in October, and it continues into December. The plan concentrates on houses and roads that are more vulnerable to burglary. We spend more time in these areas to deter and reassure. We visit the householder to offer crime prevention advice, and we look at the streets to see if there is anything we can do with other partner agencies to ‘target harden’ the area. One of the best things you can do is get a timer switch so your house is not left in darkness. A ‘fake TV’ is also another useful tool. A fake TV gives out the same type of flickering a real TV does, so behind a curtain it looks like the TV is on. Couple that with a timer switch for a lamp then your house will look occupied and will hopefully deter a burglar. Both of these can be found on the net to buy quite reasonably.

What do you get the gadget fan who has everything?

It’s easy to get Valentine’s Day wrong: nothing says “I love you” less than uncomfortable pants in the wrong size, some wilting flowers or whatever chocolates were half price in Tesco. But if your soul mate is a gadget fan, it’s very easy to get Valentine’s Day right.

One of the problems of buying presents for gadget fans is that they tend to have the big things already, so for example if they fancied an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy S6 they’ve almost certainly bought it for themselves. But that’s an opportunity rather than a problem, because there are stacks of accessories and add-ons that can enhance what they’ve already got.

Take the Apple Watch, for example. There’s a huge range of straps including tanned and coloured leather, metal and fun coloured silicone that can completely transform its looks.

Apple’s own ones are fairly nice and predictably expensive, but you don’t need to pay quite so much: metal straps from the likes of Hoco (£48) and leather ones from Nomad (around £70) look and feel fantastic, and having multiple straps means the Watch fits with any outfit from ultra-casual to seriously formal.

It’s a similar story with

smartphone and tablet cases, where there are some fantastic designs to choose from. A woven Ted Baker case for the iPad Mini is £35, while Pipetto. co.uk’s clever Origami cases are around £30. You’ll find all kinds of household names making phone and tablet cases including Radley, Michael Kors and Aspinal of London, with prices ranging from around £12.50 for a simple Radley iPhone case to £250 for an Aspinal iPad case.

Accessories aren’t just about fashion. If your beloved has a smartphone, tablet or laptop they might appreciate some Bluetooth accessories, such as Bluetooth wireless headphones - around £50 for a set of Jabra Move headphones, rising to around £200 for high-end sets from Bose - or wireless speakers, which are great for streaming music from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music at home, in the garden or on the beach when Summer finally returns. We’re big fans of the Bose Soundlink Mini (£169), but you needn’t spend that much to get great sound: Sony’s SRSX2 is around £60, while JBL’s Flip 2 is about £50 and TDK’s tough Trek Flex is £55 - £69 depending on your choice of colours.

If you’d rather give a more traditional gift, technology

can still help: the Lastminute. com, Laterooms.com, Expedia. co.uk, Kayak and SkyScanner apps can all help you find the perfect romantic getaway at the right price, while the 5pm and OpenTable apps make it easy to book a restaurant for a romantic night out - although if you’d rather impress by cooking something spectacular at home, celebrity chef apps from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson can give you not just recipes but videos on how to prepare the perfect Valentine dinner.

Tech can even help if you don’t currently have someone to share Valentine’s day with: online matchmaking services such as Match.com have smartphone and tablet apps to help you find Miss or Mr Right, while famous apps such as Tinder (for everyone) and Grindr (for gay or bisexual men) use location awareness to help you find potential partners near you. If that sounds a little bit scary, apps such as Hitch enable friends to play matchmaker, limiting the pool of potential suitors to people your friends already know.

The Beaconsfield Archive Project The Beaconsfield Archive Project Committee consisting of Mike & Margaret Grace, Debbie Marsden and Clare Bull and guided by Laura Cotton, the Bucks County Archivist, received a grant of £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as monies from local businesses to go towards the cost of training volunteers to conserve, digitise and catalogue its extensive archive in order to make it available to the community.

Beaconsfield does not have a museum. Records are stored at the Town Hall, thanks to the generosity of the Town Council. Hidden amongst these various artefacts and records are surprising treasures for a local historian. Whilst trawling through some handwritten notes by John Broadbent, a local architect and amateur historian before his death in 1994, Clare Bull, who was transcribing them for the archives was intrigued by a reference to a sign which John described as being on the side of the Black Horse pub in Wycombe End. This was the first building you came across on the way into Beaconsfield from High Wycombe, and used to stand on the site of the Old Forge which is now a Design Studio. His notes describe the sign as simply saying “No vagrancy or begging allowed”

However Clare’s interest was aroused because she’d remembered from earlier rummaging amongst the records seeing a wooden sign saying something similar, and sure enough in the dust hidden behind a cupboard was the original sign which is shown above. It’s a bit the worse for wear but was recovered and donated to the society in the 1970s when the old forge was being renovated.

A new website will soon be launched to allow everyone to access the town’s history.

Firstly decide whether you want a bundle deal with one provider for broadband, phone and/or TV. They are sometimes cheaper and simpler.

Then you can compare tariffs from different providers using an Ofcom-approved price comparison site via www.ofcom.org.uk. Make sure you factor in any installation, line rental or connection charges and work out what your monthly charge will be.

Keeping your energy consumption low by using thermostats, radiator valves and timers effectively will also help reduce your costs.
