t is well and truly spring now! And with not one, but two Bank Holidays, what’s not to love?

The first Bank Holiday falls on 1st May this year. May Day has a long tradition in Great Britain and across Europe, with its origins in springtime rituals in both Celtic and Roman cultures. One of the most iconic images of May Day is Maypole Dancing. The origins of the Maypole remain unknown, but the earliest recorded use of a Maypole in Britain comes from a Welsh poem written in the 14th century. Maypoles are generally decorated with spring flowers and greenery, and dancers use brightly coloured ribbons to weave complex patterns around the pole. An extra treat this month is a second Bank Holiday! Until 1978, this Bank Holiday always fell on Whit Monday, the day after the celebration of Pentecost in the Christian calendar. In the industrial age of the 19th century it became customary for the mills to shut down for the week for annual maintenance, and evolved into a celebratory holiday. As the weather gets even warmer (hopefully!), enjoy the extra days off work and make the most of the sunshine! With exams coming closer, we wish all our local students the best of luck in their studies. If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

Should You Pay Off Debts With Your Pension?

Finance

gaining access to this money.

The 2014 Budget introduced new regulations on how personal pensions can be accessed. These new pension freedoms mean that, if you have a money purchase or defined contribution pension, buying an annuity is no longer your only option at retirement. Many people have since chosen to withdraw pension monies to invest in other financial products, and some have decided to pay off debts with the money. So is it a good idea to repay debt in this way, and what are the main aspects to consider? Do you want to access your pension before you retire? Some pension schemes allow you to access your pension at the age of 55. Doing so can significantly reduce the amount you have available in older age, however, unless you have other pensions or a large savings pot. Tax issues you shouldn’T ignore You can withdraw a 25% tax-free lump sum from your pension, but taking any more than this percentage will increase your level of income for that tax year. This could mean that you enter a higher rate tax band, and subsequently lose much of the benefit of

8

Will iT affecT your benefiTs enTiTlemenT? If you claim meanstested benefits, withdrawing a lump sum from your pension could affect your entitlement. It might severely reduce the amounts you receive, or even mean that you can’t make a claim. WhaT are The cosTs of accessing your pension? Many pension providers charge a fee for early access to a pension, and there is generally a charge each time you make a withdrawal. This could severely deplete your pension fund, making it expensive and unrealistic financially to repay debts in this way. final salary schemes If you have a final salary pension, you might be tempted to transfer your money into a personal pension scheme that gives you access to withdraw cash. This is likely to offer a poor reward in terms of conversion, however, and also may not provide you with sufficient income in retirement. be careful abouT pension recycling The government has introduced legislation to prevent ‘pension recycling’. This situation occurs when someone uses their pension to pay off debt before they retire, with the intention of replacing their pension money whilst still working. Even if you do not deliberately

set out to do this, by withdrawing your pension you could be inadvertently caught out by the pension recycling regulations. For example, if you: • Withdraw over £30,000 from your pension, and as a result: • Receive £7,500 or more taxfree, and then: • Increase your pension contributions by more than 30% The rules apply regardless of whether you pay off debt with the money, and can result in the anticipated ‘tax-free’ sums being taxed by up to 70% by the government. The reason why these rules have been introduced is to prevent people benefiting from taking more than one series of tax-free sums from their pensions, and as encouragement to save more for retirement. With so many people now expected to live longer, it can be risky to use your pension to pay off debt. Personal circumstances will dictate whether it’s the right move for you, but it’s crucial that you obtain pension advice from an independent financial adviser before taking any action. You’ll be able to find out the ‘bottom line’ figure once the tax, charges, loss of benefits and other potential deductions have been taken into account, and decide whether or not it’s truly worthwhile. https://debtcamel.co.uk/2015pension-changes-a-new-optionfor-paying-off-debts/ https://debtcamel.co.uk/debtspension-recycling-tax/

Camembert & Red Pepper Tarts Makes 4

Ready in 45 minutes

A really quick and easy snack, starter or light supper dish made with

Recipe

just five ingredients.

Ingredients: •

2 large red peppers, deseeded and cut into strips

1 tbsp olive oil

250g puff pastry

150g Camembert cheese, thinly sliced

150g bag rocket and watercress salad

TIP

Add extra flavour by spreading a thin layer of pesto sauce or tomato chutney in the pastry square before topping with the pepper and cheese.

Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Place the pepper strips in a shallow roasting tin. Drizzle over the olive oil and roast for 15 minutes until just tender. Leave to cool. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough square shape the thickness of a pound coin. Trim with a sharp knife to make a 26cm square. Cut into 4 x 13cm squares. Place the squares of pastry on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden and the cheese has melted. Serve warm with the salad leaves.

Health

These Boots (and Bodies) Are Made for Walking

Health & Wellbeing

enough to keep vitamin D levels high.

May is National Walking Month. Yes; sadly, simple old walking needs promoting. Many of us walk far less than previous generations did, yet walking is great for our health and brings other benefits, too. The healTh BenefiTs Walking as exercise shouldn’t be underrated. Regular walking is proven to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, obesity and some cancers, and helps maintain musculoskeletal health. On average, walking 10,000 steps burns 400kcal a day. Walking can also lift your mood and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Countryside walks also offer nature, tranquillity and fresh air. While our skin and eyes do need protection from unhealthy UV exposure, some UV light is essential for good health. The UV light we absorb while walking can alleviate depression, help to regulate our body clock and stimulate Vitamin D production. Vitamin D boosts immunity, aids blood cell formation and helps us absorb calcium and phosphorous, necessary for healthy bones and teeth. The World Health Organisation says 5 to 15 minutes of casual sun exposure of hands, face and arms 2 to 3 times a week during summer is

OTher BenefiTs Of Walking accessibility: Walking can be done anytime, anywhere; as part of an everyday journey to school, work or activities, or a special trip. You’re not obviously ‘exercising’, which may reduce any self-consciousness. social: You can walk with a family member or friend, allowing you quality time together. You may meet other people while walking or choose to join a walking group or health walk (see links below). environmental: Every time we walk to work, school, shops or activities instead of using transport, we reduce pollution and congestion, helping the environment and improving everyone’s health and safety - both now and in the future. financial: Simple, level walks require no special clothes or equipment. It’s free exercise that can reduce travel costs, too. Walking DOs anD DOn’Ts DO wear comfortable, weatherappropriate clothes and footwear. Any comfy footwear and your usual clothes are fine for walking around streets or parks, but you’ll need proper walking boots if walking in rural or hilly areas and waterproofs for bad weather. In warmer weather, remember a sun hat and sunglasses (your eyes can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays just as your skin can). Apply sun cream before and during your walk.

DO be prepared and safe. Ensure you take a drink and a snack, especially on hot days and long or more rural walks. Know where you’re going and how long it will take (and consider telling someone). Know what weather to expect and don’t play music too loudly - be aware of what’s happening around you. DOn’T ignore pain from footwear. Head back. Blisters can quickly become agonising. DOn’T ignore weather warnings or advice from walking guides, whether written or human, and leave long or challenging hikes until you’re fitter and more experienced. Walking rOuTes anD grOups

ghost in the shell SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Scarlett Johansson proves she’s tough as they get, both on and off screen, as she talks family, fighting and feminism. The pressure of promoting a film would be enough for anyone, let alone someone going through a very public break up. After all, it was only in January that Scarlett Johansson announced her separation from French husband Romain Dauriac and the proceedings already seem to be getting a little caustic between the estranged pair, with Dauriac claiming his wife’s career demands put pressure on their relationship. But the 32-year-old actress is a consummate pro, and on the subject of her new film, Ghost in the Shell, she is as enthusiastic and chatty as ever. “This seemed so far from anything I'd ever done before, so far from who I am as not only an actress but as person,” she says vehementl “Watching the anime for the vehemently. first time, I was confronted by how new and fresh this all appeared to me and that brought out these conflicting emotions. How would I ever fit into that world? But also, I really want to experience this.”

Johansson is not alone in feeling overwhelmed by the concept of the film, which is based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow, as fans of the comic have long said that to do the original justice the film would have to have a level of incoherence, as it is pac packed with surreal ideas about existence and identity. Set in a dystopian future, Ghost in the Shell is visually stunning, as Johannsson’s cyber-enhanced soldier kicks and punches her way across a neon cityscape. “I think the fight scenes were my favourite part of working on this movie,” she reveals. “I came away completely energised and revved, and when I saw the finished product I felt pretty proud.”

In her own words, the New York-native is a ‘veteran’ when it comes to preparing for physically intense roles having played Marvel’s Black Widow in six films as part of The Avengers universe. “In my mind, I can take on anyone,” she jokes. But no matter how tough she is on set, Johansson is a devoted mother to Rose, two, and is adamant that her daughter ‘won't be seeing the film for a long, long time!” It’s fair to say that the Lost in Translation star is fast becoming a feminist icon, and though she has long been outspoken on current affairs, lately she has been even more politically active, satirising Ivanka Trump in a Saturday night Live sketch and playing a central role at the Women’s ma march in Washington earlier this year. I'm not against Donald Trump, the march wasn't against him,” she emphasises. “It was a march for equality and rights we all have to continuously fight for because gender imbalance continues to be a driving force in our society. We need to continue to support each other, we need to continue to support other women and fight the good fight.” by Karen Anne Overton

National Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month - What is a Veterinary Nurse? By Fiona Mullan BSc Hons RVN VPAC

Unlike Nursing in the medical profession, many members of the public are completely unaware of the vital role that veterinary nurses have in veterinary pracƟce. The month of May brings the arrival of NaƟonal Veterinary Nursing Awareness month, which aims to change this. In the same way Nurses work alongside Doctors, Veterinary Nurses work alongside Vets, and no veterinary pracce/hospital could funcon without them. Nor without the fantasc support staff (Receponists, Kennel assistants etc.) that complete the veterinary team. As a veterinary nurse you oŌen get asked ‘So when do you become a vet?’ This is very disheartening as veterinary nursing is a profession in its own right, and a profession that requires knowledge, skill, and (depending on course provider) up to 4 years intensive training to complete the course and pass the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) examinaƟons required to qualify as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

So what do Veterinary Nurses do? Each day in veterinary pracce is different! One day you might be caring for the hospitalised inpaents — administering medicaons, providing IV uid therapy, taking and recording regular observaons/ vital signs, and recovering animals from anaesthec or surgery. The next day you could be in the operang theatre — scrubbed in and assisng the vet with surgical procedures or even doing minor procedures (whilst under vet supervision) such as minor stch ups, minor lump removal, radiography, dental scale and polishes, or carrying out the vital job of monitoring the animal’s cardiovascular and respiratory funcon whilst they are under anaesthec. There will be days where you will be running nurse clinics and involved with client educaon — doing consultaons such as post op checks, bandage/dressing changes, suture removal, dental advice, weight loss clinics, ea and worming clinics or giving general advice and helping out on recepon. There is also a lot of laboratory work — running blood samples, tesng urine samples, looking down the microscope, sending samples away to external laboratories and reporng results to the vets. The list goes on!

Getting started in Veterinary Nursing! The best way to know if this is the career for you, is to do as much research and work experience as possible! This will give you a real idea of what to expect and an opportunity to ask all your quesons. Further informaon about the Veterinary Nursing profession can be found at the Brish Veterinary Nursing Associaon or RCVS websites.

Worried about debts? The demand for money and debt advice from Citizens Advice is highest in January and February. The beginning of the year is a good time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the year ahead and for the future. Q

I recently lost my job and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first? First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electricity, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and other non-priority debts. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. Visit our debt advice pages at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money You’re now ready to start negotiations with your creditor. Put together a letter explaining why your ability to repay has been affected, including a full breakdown of your monthly income and outgoings (known as a financial statement), and what you think you can pay. Send this letter to your creditors and they will use the information to help set up an affordable repayment plan with you. For more guidance on putting together your budget and financial statement contact your local Citizens Advice office.
