t is well and truly spring now! And with not one, but two Bank Holidays, what’s not to love?

The first Bank Holiday falls on 1st May this year. May Day has a long tradition in Great Britain and across Europe, with its origins in springtime rituals in both Celtic and Roman cultures. One of the most iconic images of May Day is Maypole Dancing. The origins of the Maypole remain unknown, but the earliest recorded use of a Maypole in Britain comes from a Welsh poem written in the 14th century. Maypoles are generally decorated with spring flowers and greenery, and dancers use brightly coloured ribbons to weave complex patterns around the pole. An extra treat this month is a second Bank Holiday! Until 1978, this Bank Holiday always fell on Whit Monday, the day after the celebration of Pentecost in the Christian calendar. In the industrial age of the 19th century it became customary for the mills to shut down for the week for annual maintenance, and evolved into a celebratory holiday. As the weather gets even warmer (hopefully!), enjoy the extra days off work and make the most of the sunshine! With exams coming closer, we wish all our local students the best of luck in their studies. If you have any views or feedback on The Local Directory publications please do contact us - email us at info@ localdirectoryltd.co.uk, many thanks for reading. Bu

ARE YOU

Breast Aware? ABOUT BREAST CANCER “Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the UK, with more than 40,000* new cases diagnosed each year.” “Despite the fact that the number of breast cancers are increasing, the positive news is that deaths due to breast cancer are falling sharply. There are several different factors accounting for this fall, including a range of improved treatments and earlier detection. Although the risk of breast cancer increases with age, about 1 in 7 cancers are identified in women under the age of 50” says Mr Maisam Fazel, Onco Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Spire Thames Valley Hospital.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER? If you find anything unusual or have any concerns regarding your breast health, you should consult your GP in the first instance to find out more information. Typical symptoms include: • Change in the size and/or shape of your breast, e.g. flattening or swelling. • Dimpling of the skin (skin looks like the texture of orange peel).

Gardening

TO DECK

OR NOT TO DECK

I know I am personally responsible for decking over vast tracts of the East Midlands (and beyond) during my time in the landscaping industry but, thankfully, I’m not taking as much flak currently as Alan Titchmarsh. This is the man who, unwittingly, masterminded the deforestation of most of Northern Europe during his stint at the helm of the BBC’s Ground Force programme! The nineties was THE “Decade of Decking” with every self-respecting designer and landscape gardener following in the sage footsteps of the UK’s head gardener and swapping their cement mixers for power tools and stainless steel screws. So why all this fuss now over decking; wasn’t it simply a fad with a short shelf-life? I can’t say I have any regrets about any of the decks that I have built – none of them have collapsed and I think that they have mostly been a great success. In fact, I had a very nice message the other day regarding a deck I built over 15 years ago. That’s not bad for something which was built out of softwood (albeit pressure treated) and has seen plenty of family use for all those years! The customer actually wanted it re-built because the wood had started to rot; evidently he doesn’t think that decking is old hat. This is the beauty of decking, it’s a quick and easily installed feature whch doesn’t entail building large scale foundations. It was a perfect material for the Ground Force team to knock something up in a couple of days - and inspire millions of DIY fanatics to build their own. Apparently, B&Q were very happy with their sales figures as well! Unfortunately, decking now appears to have dropped out of fashion with the hoi poloi of exterior design – probably because it is seen as a bit of a cop out and not a serious garden feature. Personally, I think this is a tad disingenuous as building a deck has helped many families achieve a cost-effec-

22

tive family space in their gardens, something that may have cost 2 or 3 times as much if they’d gone for paving slabs. Better still, you can really let your creative juices flow with decks on multiple levels, complete with hot tubs and sophisticated lighting if you feel that way inclined. One of the greatest benefits, though, is its intrinsic ‘friendliness’ as a surface; walking across a sun-warmed deck barefoot is a really pleasant experience (particularly if you have an ice-cold beer in your hand!) and, although not quite so pleasant, having a fall (particularly if you’re carrying a beer) is normally less damaging than if you fall onto paving. For a really special deck, you need to use one of the hardwoods such as Ipe or Iroko which (we are told) is taken from sustainable forests. This wood is so dense that it needs very careful handling and instalation. Every screw hole (and you need a lot) has to be pre-drilled and the supporting framework has to be constructed with the finished weight in mind. But before you start worrying about the cost and inconveience, there is now a new arrival in the world of decking – the revolutionary composite deck. Its close relative, artificial grass, is a nylon mat whereas composite decking is made of some sort of space age polyurethene resin. As frightening as this may sound, the end product is excellent and, whilst purists may still hanker for real wood, they will be missing out on some of the key benefits of this great new product, such as the maintenance free finish, non-slip surface and lots of happy squirrels who were saved from eviction! So if you are considering a new entertaining area in the garden, don’t dismiss a deck from the possibilities – and if you need any more convincing then I’m quite happy to help you decide! Camembert & Red Pepper Tarts Makes 4

Ready in 45 minutes

A really quick and easy snack, starter or light supper dish made with

Recipe

just five ingredients.

Ingredients: •

2 large red peppers, deseeded and cut into strips

1 tbsp olive oil

250g puff pastry

150g Camembert cheese, thinly sliced

150g bag rocket and watercress salad

TIP

Add extra flavour by spreading a thin layer of pesto sauce or tomato chutney in the pastry square before topping with the pepper and cheese.

26

Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Place the pepper strips in a shallow roasting tin. Drizzle over the olive oil and roast for 15 minutes until just tender. Leave to cool. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough square shape the thickness of a pound coin. Trim with a sharp knife to make a 26cm square. Cut into 4 x 13cm squares. Place the squares of pastry on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is risen and golden and the cheese has melted. Serve warm with the salad leaves.

The Blackbird CGI It’s any car you want it to be

Te c h n o l o g y

T

he Blackbird CGI is a very unusual car. It can only seat 1 passenger and it has no boot, no doors, windows or roof. Its programmable electric motor is incredibly flexible but not really powerful enough for any form of racing. Most bizarrely of all, it can change its length by up to 4 feet and its width by up to 10 inches. What on earth is it for? It is, in fact, a computer-generated imagery (CGI) rig designed for use by the car advertising industry. At the touch of a few buttons it can become virtually any car in existence. Imagine the scenario, you’re a car manufacturer filming an advert for a new SUV in the Kalahari Desert. The director suddenly decides that the white car you’ve brought along doesn’t stand out against the glare of the sun. Worse still, he thinks the 3 door version looks much better than the 5 door car he’s been asked to film. What are you to do, wait around for a couple of weeks while another car is shipped out from Europe? By then, the director and film crew will have probably moved on to another job and you’ll have to start again from scratch. Well, if you have a Blackbird CGI to hand, it’s not a problem. You just use CGI graphics to “reskin” the rig and turn it into a red 3 door SUV.

Now comes the clever bit. At the top of the Blackbird are four video cameras providing a 360º view around the car. There’s also a radar scanner similar to the ones fitted to driverless cars that can identify solid objects around the Blackbird, how close they are and how big they are. Between the two of them, they provide enough data to mimic the effect of a shadow passing over the car as it drives along. It is also possible to superimpose an interior shot of the real car driving over the same terrain as the Blackbird. The data from the Blackbird and the cameras filming it are all fed into an extremely powerful computer. The computer also contains digital images of the real car filmed from every conceivable angle. These digital images are then superimposed over the camera footage using augmented reality (AR) technology. The system is so good that the director can watch the AR footage in something close to real time. CGI has been around for a while now and the technology is constantly improving. Until now, two things have limited its use; it was staggeringly expensive and so was limited to blockbuster movies and big budget computer games and also it took a long time to create, frequently taking several months just to put together one film sequence. The Blackbird CGI has changed all that. Although hiring the rig will not be cheap, it is more cost effective than shipping numerous cars around the world and running the risk of damaging them during filming. The images created are also incredibly realistic and it’s very hard to tell you aren’t watching footage of a real car. Finally, there’s the time factor – from months of work to something close to real time. Technology is a wonderful thing.

Here’s how it works. The chassis of the Blackbird is adjusted until the track and wheelbase are the same as the car it is supposed to represent. The suspension is completely adjustable and is tweaked until the ride height is the same. It is also adjusted to mimic the handling characteristics of the real car. The most visually distinctive elements of a moving car are actually the wheels, so the wheels from the real car are fitted to the Blackbird. The Blackbird’s bodywork, such as it is, is painted matt black and highly visible datum points Graham Iek are stuck to on the bodywork so the cameras can track its movementsPlease as it drives along. PRICELESS MEMORIES A

Travel

s someone who saves every month in order to travel with my family, it was nice to read a recent report that that revealed that children value trips away with their families more than they do their toys. With the average annual spend on toys being £503 per child, this got me thinking; could I remember the toys I had when I was five? I couldn’t remember any of them, but I could clearly remember being in the “btand’’ and playing a baguette saxophone with my little sister on the stage in Calella in Spain when I was that age. It was our first ever holiday abroad and I also remember the turquoise swimming pool we’d spend all day in and the huge Britannia aircraft we flew on. That year I also remember my now dear departed paternal grandparents taking us to St Ives in Cornwall, “crabbing” with my grandad and endless supplies of fish and chips and ice cream; I enjoyed it just as much as the trip to Spain.

I also remember being one of the first tourists to travel to Bulgaria after the fall of the Soviet Union; I think I was 8. The flight into Sofia airport was probably best described as an adventure, and the huge pots of Goulash that awaited were daunting but delicious. It was May and the sea was full of migrating jellyfish, a nightmare for my Mum who had her two daughters catching them in buckets assisted by her other “child,’’ my dad. Another memory I have is being on Palma Nova beach in Mallorca with my dad, digging a hole that was so deep I thought we’d emerge in Australia; inevitably, he got buried in it. We also visited Palma port whilst on that holiday and I always recommend it to clients now as

40

it was such an eye opener, even at that young age, with its impressive Cathedral. I asked my friends and fellow parents at the school gates about their experiences and they all had tales to tell: visits to Orlando, boating in the Broads, day trips to Skegness, flights to Spain, school trips to France, camping near Snowdonia… one friend’s earliest memory was when she was 3 and she lost her shoes on a beach in the Algarve! It was obvious the study struck a chord with a lot of people and I had started a huge debate in the playground! I thought my own son, now 7, would have no memories of his first trip to Corfu when he was aged just 5 so I sat down with him and asked the question. Wow, was I wrong; he reeled off the first time he tried a Gyros (the Greek version of a kebab), the beach with the cliff edge and tunnel (I’d forgotten about that!), the kids’ club chocolate party, the day trip by boat to Albania, the day we went shell collecting on the beach with canals and found a hermit crab, and the turbulence on the flight home (that’s one memory I wish we could all forget). So, there you go; holiday memories may cost a little to acquire but in the long run they are priceless. What memories do you, your children and friends have and how many more adventures can we all create? The possibilities are endless, and the memories will hopefully last forever.

ghost in the shell SCARLETT JOHANSSON

Scarlett Johansson proves she’s tough as they get, both on and off screen, as she talks family, fighting and feminism. The pressure of promoting a film would be enough for anyone, let alone someone going through a very public break up. After all, it was only in January that Scarlett Johansson announced her separation from French husband Romain Dauriac and the proceedings already seem to be getting a little caustic between the estranged pair, with Dauriac claiming his wife’s career demands put pressure on their relationship. But the 32-year-old actress is a consummate pro, and on the subject of her new film, Ghost in the Shell, she is as enthusiastic and chatty as ever. “This seemed so far from anything I'd ever done before, so far from who I am as not only an actress but as person,” she says vehementl “Watching the anime for the vehemently. first time, I was confronted by how new and fresh this all appeared to me and that brought out these conflicting emotions. How would I ever fit into that world? But also, I really want to experience this.”

42

Johansson is not alone in feeling overwhelmed by the concept of the film, which is based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow, as fans of the comic have long said that to do the original justice the film would have to have a level of incoherence, as it is pac packed with surreal ideas about existence and identity. Set in a dystopian future, Ghost in the Shell is visually stunning, as Johannsson’s cyber-enhanced soldier kicks and punches her way across a neon cityscape. “I think the fight scenes were my favourite part of working on this movie,” she reveals. “I came away completely energised and revved, and when I saw the finished product I felt pretty proud.”

In her own words, the New York-native is a ‘veteran’ when it comes to preparing for physically intense roles having played Marvel’s Black Widow in six films as part of The Avengers universe. “In my mind, I can take on anyone,” she jokes. But no matter how tough she is on set, Johansson is a devoted mother to Rose, two, and is adamant that her daughter ‘won't be seeing the film for a long, long time!” It’s fair to say that the Lost in Translation star is fast becoming a feminist icon, and though she has long been outspoken on current affairs, lately she has been even more politically active, satirising Ivanka Trump in a Saturday night Live sketch and playing a central role at the Women’s ma march in Washington earlier this year. I'm not against Donald Trump, the march wasn't against him,” she emphasises. “It was a march for equality and rights we all have to continuously fight for because gender imbalance continues to be a driving force in our society. We need to continue to support each other, we need to continue to support other women and fight the good fight.” by Karen Anne Overton

Worried about debts? The demand for money and debt advice from Citizens Advice is highest in January and February. The beginning of the year is a good time to take stock of your finances and think about your priorities for the year ahead and for the future. Q

I recently lost my job and fell behind on several bills including my council tax, electricity and credit cards. I’m back in work and keen to start paying off my debts, but can’t afford to pay them all straight away. What should I pay off first? First off, draw up a list of who you owe money to, how much you owe, and which of these are ‘priority debts’. Priority debts include your rent or mortgage, gas and electricity, and council tax. These debts should always be paid first as delaying payment can have serious consequences such as having your energy supply cut off, or losing your home. You can use any spare income to tackle your credit cards and other non-priority debts. To work out exactly how much you can afford to repay, you’ll need to compare your monthly income to your essential outgoings and see how much money you’ve got leftover to put towards your debts. Citizens Advice has an online budget tool which can help. Visit our debt advice pages at www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money You’re now ready to start negotiations with your creditor. Put together a letter explaining why your ability to repay has been affected, including a full breakdown of your monthly income and outgoings (known as a financial statement), and what you think you can pay. Send this letter to your creditors and they will use the information to help set up an affordable repayment plan with you. For more guidance on putting together your budget and financial statement contact your local Citizens Advice office.
