Note to parents

Dear parents,

Children are full of innocence and wonder. What follows that is vulnerability. The idea that an adult can sexually abuse a child is terrifying. But sadly, it is a reality, and all we can do is be prepared. Like you would educate them about any other risk they may face as they grow up, we encourage you to empower them with information that will help them recognise and avert threats to avoid potentially dangerous situations before they unfold.

The aim of this book is to prevent sexual violence and educate children to respect their privacy from an early age. That’s why we have designed this book—to help children navigate the world better. Whether they’re meeting an adult stranger, spending time with a known adult, having a sleepover with a friend, interacting with an adult in public areas, or surfing online, we want them to be safe. Through our collection of stories, we aim to empower your child to understand boundaries, trust their instincts, and seek help when needed. Furthermore, we want to equip them with the right vocabulary to use when faced with such situations and the confidence to walk out or take precautions whenever needed.

From the earliest possible age, children must be warned of the dangers and informed of how and by whom they can be protected. It’s also important to remind them that children do not have to be responsible for their own protection; that’s the role of adults. The only thing you need to do is provide them with a safe space to voice their concerns. Together, let’s help them and watch them grow up safe and sound.

Level 1: Zara’s Grades

Melk: #########

Hani: whaaT?

Mile: Bruh, what you did was not cool.§

Hani: Cancelled in my books!

Zara went into the classroom alone.

Once she entered, she noticed that only her math teacher, Mr. Abid, was there.

“How odd,” she thought.

Mr. Abid looked concerned and a bit angry.

“Zara, let’s talk about your grades,” he gravely said.

After a thought, he added, “Maybe I can help you get good grades... but you have to keep it a secret.”

He winked at her. Then he asked Zara to close the door, so that they could talk without her friends listening.

How should Zara respond?

A) “Sure, Mr. Abid, I’ll close the door.”

B) “I’m sorry, Mr. Abid, I’m not comfortable; please let’s talk outside.”

Level 2: Omar’s Doctor Visit

SparkleStorm: say what?

GalaxyGamer: Oh no! Not again!

PixelPanda: Wait, what just happened?§

SunnySkyz: Yikes, that was unexpected!

Omar had a tummy ache that wouldn’t go away, so his worried mom took him to the hospital.

Once they reached the hospital, they met Dr. Saad. He greeted them both as they walked in. “Hello, how are we feeling today?”

Omar’s mom explained that his tummy had been aching.

Dr. Saad listened as his mom described the symptoms in detail.

He cut his mom short and promptly told Omar, “Come, let’s find out what’s troubling you. Sit here, please.”

As Omar’s mom was on the other side, Omar and Dr. Saad walked towards the examination area.

He started checking Omar’s pulse.

“I have to examine you properly, let’s tell your mom to wait outside, shall we?”

What should Omar say?

A) “Sure, Doctor. Mom, please wait outside.”

B) “I’m sorry, Doctor. I want my mom to be here with me.”

Level 3: Fatima’s Sleepover

MagicMuffin: Uh-oh, this isn’t good

EpicExplorer: Are you serious right now?

DragonDreamer: Oh snap! I didn’t see that coming!

SuperSonic_Foad: This is a disaster!

Fatima’s parents dropped her off at a friend’s house for a fun sleepover. She went in and saw her friend Nora waiting for her eagerly in the room.

“Welcome Fatima! I’m so happy you’re here.” Nora, her friend, said excitedly. They played with their toys for a while, laughing and having a great time. Then Nora had an idea.

“Hey Fatima, let’s play ‘House’!” she suggested. Fatima nodded happily, and they both jumped up, ready for their new adventure.

“You be the ‘mom’ and I’ll be the ‘dad’,” Nora said, pointing to the bed.

Fatima stared at the tiny bed and wondered how they would even fit on it. Nora walked to the door, about to close it.

“Come on, let’s lie down together and pretend it’s bedtime.”

She said with a smile. Fatima felt a bit uncomfortable, but she didn’t want to spoil the fun.

What should Fatima say?

A) “Okay, let’s play.”

B) “I’m not liking this. Let’s play something else.”

Level 4: Uncle Adnan’s Visit

AmiraEpic: Ahh! That was scary

ZaydZoom: Oops, this is a mess

LinaLandslide: Are you serious?

HeroHassan: Ack!

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. Layla and her family went to visit her grandparents’ house. Layla was playing happily in one of the rooms when her favourite uncle, Uncle Adnan, opened the door. She loved Uncle Adnan; he always brought her gifts and played fun games. She ran to him and he gave her a long hug.

“Let’s play!” Layla exclaimed, her eyes full of excitement. Uncle Adnan smiled and agreed.

They started chasing each other around the room, laughing and having a great time. But soon, Uncle Adnan felt tired and sat down to rest. “Layla, come sit with me,” he said, giving his thigh a pat.

Layla felt uncomfortable. Something about this didn’t feel quite right, but she also didn’t want her uncle to be upset. “Come now, you don’t want to make your uncle sad, do you?,” Uncle Adnan asked again.

B) “I’m fine. I’d rather sit on the playmat. ” What should Layla say?

A) “Ok, Sure.”

Level 5: Meriem’s Online Friends

ZaraTheWizard: Better watch out for that

RaniaRair: Not sure about this…

MayaMyst: Hold up, that seems fishy

ZainTheChamp: Better watch out for that! Meriem loved playing online every day after school.

She would always find the same player online at the same time as her. As time went by, they started chatting and getting to know each other.

It turned out that he was a boy named Ziad. He lived in the same city as her and was even the same age!

They would chat for hours, even late at night, arrange play dates in the game, and talk about how much they both hated math.

Meriem and Ziad got really close with each passing day.

Ziad started sending selfies. It became a fun thing between them; he’d send selfies, just to show what he was up to.

She started feeling like he was more than a best friend and the photos were cute too. But they never met in real life.

One day, while they were chatting, Ziad said, “ Since I’ve been sending photos, I think it’s time you catch up. Why don’t you send me some photos now? "

What should Meriem say?

A) “Wait, I’m sending you a photo ♥”

B) “No, I’m not doing that. Don’t ask me again.”

Level 6: Hamza’s Swimming Class

NoorNin: lol

FarahFir: That is not funny!

MalikMighty: Wait, what happened?§

LailaLazer: Cheugy

Hamza went to his swimming classes as usual. The team was getting ready for an inter-school competition. The coach thought Hamza had a chance to win. He even told Hamza’s father that. The happy look in his father’s eyes made Hamza work extra hard at his training.

So when the coach asked him to stay back and do one extra lap, he gave it his best shot. “2 minutes, 12 seconds. Well done, Hamza! Now go take a quick shower before your father comes to pick you up,” said the coach. Hamza went into the changing room. He quickly removed his cap and swimming trunks, and jumped into the shower.

He poured some soap on his hands and put a lot of it all over his body. All of a sudden, he heard the coach approaching. “You’re still showering? Your dad is here!” “Let me help you,” the coach offered.

The sound of the coach’s footsteps grew closer, and Hamza could see his shadow through the shower curtain. The coach was about to open it. Hamza got very uncomfortable.

What should Hamza say?

A) “I mean… Sure.”

B) “Coach, you need to leave right now.”

Did you make the right choice?

Melk: Obv!

Hani: He is all red flags

“Sure, I’ll close the door.”

Oh no! Without realising it, Zara put herself in a very dangerous situation! She should not have closed the door since she was alone with an adult in a classroom. Remember, never agree to talk to an adult alone in a room, completely away from your friends. If any adult asks you to talk to them privately and you feel uncomfortable or in danger, run out and talk to your parents or a trusted adult.

Melk: Hero!

Hani: O.O

“I’m not comfortable; please let’s talk outside.”

Yay, Zara did the right thing! She decided not to be alone with the male teacher and escaped a dangerous situation. She made the right choice by not closing the classroom door without any of her classmates present in the room. Remember, never agree to talk with any adult alone in a closed room. Stay safe and vigilant, like Zara.

SparkleStorm: Uh-oh, something’s off!

SunnySkyz: Hmm… that seems kinda sus!

“Sure, Doctor.”

Uh-oh! Looks like Omar is in a dangerous situation now! It wasn’t a good idea for him to let his mom wait outside when he’s alone with the doctor. Remember, you should always have your mom or dad with you when an adult is around, even if it’s the doctor who wants to check if you’re feeling okay. Remember, no one can touch you if it makes you feel uncomfortable. If any adult gets too close or you feel you’re in danger, scoot away and tell your parents right away.

SparkleStorm: You're a total lifesaver!

SunnySkyz: Epic hero move!

“I want my mom to be here with me.”

Woo-hoo, Omar did the right thing! He decided not to be alone with the doctor and avoided a dangerous situation. He made the right choice by letting his mother stay with him. Always remember, never let any grown-up, even the ones you know, be alone with you without your mom or dad there. Stay safe, just like Omar!

MagicMuffin: Whoa, that’s a big warning sign

SuperSonic_Foad: That’s sketchy!

“Okay, let’s play.”

Oh no! It looks like Fatima is in a dangerous situation now! She shouldn’t have played that kind of game with Nora. Remember, no game should ever involve making you uncomfortable, even if it’s with a very good friend. And no one should touch private parts of your body. If you find yourself in a situation like this, it’s important to get away and tell a trusted adult.

MagicMuffin: ...Superstar alert SuperSonic_Foad: The real MVP right here!

“Let’s play something else.”

Yay! Fatima made the right choice by not playing with Nora and suggesting a different game to play. Always remember, if a friend ever wants to play a game that makes you uncomfortable, it’s okay to say no and suggest another game instead! Also, never let anyone touch your private body parts. Stay safe like Fatima.

AmiraEpic: That’s sketchy!

HeroHassan: That’s a big warning sign

“Ok, sure!”

Oh no! Layla found herself in a dangerous situation! She should never have agreed to sit on her uncle’s lap if she felt uncomfortable. Remember, no one should force you to sit on their lap or touch you in a way that you don’t like, even when it’s someone you’ve known for years. If anyone makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s important to get away and tell a trusted adult.

AmiraEpic: You saved the day! HeroHassan: Legend!

“I’d rather sit on the playmat.”

Amazing! Layla made the right choice! By refusing to sit on her uncle’s lap, she avoided a potentially dangerous situation. Remember, no one should get close to you or touch you in a way that you don’t like. It’s always important to get away and tell a trusted adult as soon as possible. Keep it safe! Like Layla did.

ZaraTheWizard: Oops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ZainTheChamp: OMG!

“I’m sending you the photo ♥ .”

Oh no! Meriem found herself in a dangerous situation! She should never have agreed to send her online friend a photo. Remember, you should never send photos to people you don’t know, even if they’ve been sending you photos, even when you care about the person.

If someone you don’t know is asking you to send photos, tell any adult you trust right away.

ZaraTheWizard: You always have our backs

ZainTheChamp: You nailed it

“No, I’m not doing that.”

Yay! Meriem made the right choice! By refusing to send her online friend a photo, she avoided a potentially dangerous situation Remember, you should never send photos to people you don’t know, even if they’ve been sending you photos, even when you care about the person. If someone you don’t know is asking you to send photos, tell your parents or any trusted adult as soon as possible. Be safe, like Meriem.

SparkleStorm: This went wrong fast

SunnySkyz: Bet

“I mean… Sure”.

Oh no! Hamza found himself in a dangerous situation! He should never have agreed to let his coach approach while taking a shower. Remember, you should not let anyone come near you in a situation like this. If anyone can see you or they try to come closer, it’s important to get away and call for help immediately. Don’t forget to tell a trusted adult.

NoorNin: You were right

LailaLazer: You’re the ultimate game

“You need to leave right now.”

Amazing! Hamza made the right choice! By telling his coach to stay away, he avoided a potentially dangerous situation. Remember, you should not let anyone come near you while showering.
