“BRYC’s vision of equity demands that we offer our Fellows a caliber of services equal or superior to those affluent students enjoy, and that starts and ends with our team.”

MISSION

Help underserved youth excel in high school; enter, persist through, and graduate from college; and secure career-track jobs.

VISION

Provide our students with the best college-preparatory, college persistence, and career placement services money can buy — for free — so they can maximize the economic value of their degrees, build the lives they want, and help future generations do the same.

2 Go Hard Be Just Maximize BRYC HUSTLE INTEGRITY COMMUNITY — — VALUES

Dear Friends,

LEADERS

BRYC’s vision statement captures what we think equity means in our context: providing the best college-preparatory resources money can buy for free If college success is, as the data show, most strongly correlated with socioeconomic status, then fairness is a world in which children who didn’t win the birth lottery have access to world-class college coaching In this long game, nothing matters more than the coaches themselves

This fact hit different when I dropped off my then-one-year-old son Quinn for his first day of school in August 2022. I had been an educator for 12 years, but now I was the one entrusting my child’s well-being to another’s care, and the relief I felt knowing he would be safe, stimulated, and seen was indescribable. It was then that I appreciated, in a way I never had before, that this is how BRYC parents feel leaving their children with us.

BRYC’s vision of equity demands that we offer our Fellows a caliber of services equal or superior to those affluent students enjoy, and that starts and ends with our team. From the program managers who facilitate electric evening sessions to the operations personnel who ensure Fellows get safely to our facility, you’d be hard-pressed to find professionals more caring and qualified or a team more tightly knit Young people win when the educators behind them are winners, and I’m excited for you to get to know ours They make BRYC the best place to work and the best place to be a teenager

Much love,

Dear BRYC Community,

As we welcomed six outstanding new board members during our annual retreat last August, some of us veterans half-jokingly (but also half-seriously) commented that we might not make the cut in 2024 Our newest cohort is that impressive Karen Breaux, Dr Jonathan Earle, Carissa Graves, Ted James, Laura Poché, and Raedtha Vasquez are giants in their fields and seasoned nonprofit governors, and their participation is no doubt a signal of BRYC’s growth and rising stature They fit in well on a team of winners who are deeply, personally committed to advancing equity through access to higher education.

I’m honored and humbled to lead the best board in the city succeeding the great Dr. Chaunda Mitchell as BRYC undertakes a period of ambitious expansion. In fall 2024, we will be serving 500+ 8th-12th-grade Fellows across three sites while another 100+ seniors will, for the first time, experience BRYC programs directly in their schools. That means we are en route to serving at least 800 teens per year by 2026–2027. At the same time, we are augmenting services to our nearly 700 alumni, including the addition of BRYC’s first-ever director of career services, who will assist graduates with their transition to the professional world Indeed, BRYC is in it for the long haul, committed to ensuring our Fellows can cash in on the value of their degrees and build the lives they want for themselves This is what real impact looks like, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of it Thank you so much for your support

Sincerely,

GAME CHANGERS

Great Stuff: A Q&A with Allie Diefendorf

Allie (University of Vermont ’14) served as a part-time ACT instructor before joining BRYC full time as director of underclassmen programs. In 2022, she was promoted to chief of programs, overseeing all of BRYC’s 8th–12th-grade programs, curriculum, and facilitators.

Q. Describe the evolution of BRYC‘s self-regulation curriculum since you started leading underclassmen programs — what‘s changed?

Allie: Before SRL/SEL, BRYC used the PMAB model (plan, monitor, assess, break) with underclassmen (8th–10th-graders), and it was effective We’re standing on those shoulders now, and our programming has exploded with so much creativity and innovation. We’re at a place where we can truly say this is GREAT stuff, and we keep making it greater. I’m so thankful to have this team I fully trust, who always go above and beyond. We’ve also evolved so that SRL/SEL isn’t just a focus for underclassmen. The habits, language, and practice continue on in junior and senior year, where they’re applied to ACT strategies, college essays, etc. It’s a lifetime skill. You don’t just stop after 10th grade you get better.

Q. What are the signs that Fellows are applying SRL/SEL consistently?

Allie: Science tells us that if you use a planner, you’re setting yourself up for success. After two years of underclassmen programs, our juniors this year have gorgeous planners. And they’re proud to show them off! They also know what it means to take really solid notes. One of the most effective SRL techniques is “teach to learn,” wherein the bar for mastering material is the ability to teach it to someone else It’s such a simple way to make the information “sticky” for students As a result, Fellows take super detailed notes in their first BRYC program, because they’re preparing to teach the material to their mentors in the second program Now their mentors are showing up with notebooks, ready to take notes of their own, and asking clarifying questions During the group-share session, all the mentors can’t wait to describe what they’ve learned Even when Fellows don’t do well on a test or homework assignment, their self-awareness is always there, and they can identify what led to the mistakes Recently, a Fellow was so excited to tell me she got a B on a test in a class she’d been struggling to raise above a C average She used “teach to learn” at home, with her mom and a stuffed animal. This is one of a hundred examples of Fellows making the connection between BRYC habits and real life.

LEARNING LEXICON

Self-Regulated Learning (SRL)

The ability to understand and control one's learning environment Skills: goal setting, self-monitoring, self-instruction, self-reinforcement

Socioemotional Learning (SEL)

The ability to understand and control one's emotions Skills: self-management, relationship building, selfawareness, social awareness, decision making

Q. How is SRL a game changer for BRYC?

Allie: The SRL cycle is plan, monitor, assess, but SRL/SEL is so much more than that For instance, learning to make a productive mistake. Ask any Fellow, and they will tell you there are two kinds of mistakes productive and unproductive then they’ll explain the result of each. And the habit of self-advocacy they’ve developed by practicing SEL blows my mind. True selfadvocacy is hard even for adults to grasp. Our Fellows are wonderfully respectful, polite, and mature about it.

BRYC has always been a college access and persistence program, so naturally, there is a lot of emphasis on senior year activities. While our mission hasn‘t changed, we recognize that it requires being laser-focused starting in 8th grade, so that by 12th, we’ve built really strong college applicants Even more important, we‘re building stronger humans, holistically To this day, I’m amazed by Fellows texting proactively, telling their program manager to put an upcoming absence “on the calendar;“ self-advocating for a new tutor; making sure their study space is organized before diving in; and taking impeccable Cornell notes The fact that these are their habits now rather than starting freshman year of college with so much ground yet to cover is the real game changer. #

FELLOWS TAKE BIG LEAPS, LEARNING TEAM AT THEIR SIDE

3-2-1-Go! BRYC’s Youngest Fellows Start at the Finish Line

As early as eighth grade, BRYC Fellows are planning for their “future you,” i e, their adult personas, and making connections between daily activities and long-term career and life goals It’s not as easy as one-two-three, but Learning Manager Chasity Kelley says it can start with 3-2-1 “The assumption is that eighth-graders aren’t really thinking about college, but the reality is that they don’t realize it applies to them yet,” Chasity explained “The 3-2-1 exercise challenges Fellows to identify three things they want to be true about their lives, two colleges of interest, and one potential career path Of course their answers can change over time, but for now it creates context for them to recognize how what they’re doing today grades, extracurriculars, behavior, etc matters in the long run ” #

ACT-ing Out: Juniors Get Jazzed About High-Stakes Testing

Inextricably linked to Louisiana’s in-state tuition assistance program TOPS, the ACT has been a core focus for 11th-grade Fellows since year one. But the challenge of investing students in a test that seems less about proving cumulative knowledge and more about beating the clock has stumped ACT instructors nationwide for years. Something clicked when Director of Learning Aareena Dhillon Latona began infusing SRL/SEL skills Fellows had developed in 8th-10th grade more intentionally into ACT prep lessons and grouping juniors in “pods” of 2–4 to work with mentors. “We’ve really emphasized the socioemotional learning components, particularly social awareness and relationship building in partner work,” Aareena shared. “For example, we created the ‘ACT-mazing Race’ game where you have to work well as a team to be successful, one person researching information, the other taking detailed notes. We want Fellows to drive their own ACT practice process as much as possible, because we know kids learn better when they’re self-directed in exploring problems and solutions.”

BRYC’s goal is for Fellows to earn a 20 composite score (the minimum for full TOPS funding) or higher before senior year, freeing their time for the college application grind. Aareena introduced other changes to ensure 11th-graders make the most of this critical period, such as taking their first official ACT in December rather than October to benefit from three months of introductory instruction and hosting BRYC’s summer ACT camp in early June to stem learning loss after regular programs end mid-May. The Class of 2023’s ACT performance demonstrated the efficacy of these updates: 93 Fellows averaged a TOPS-eligible 22.6 composite score, increasing individual scores nearly four points on average while in BRYC. #

Did you know? ACT fees jumped 50% in the last six years, from min. $46 in 2018 to min. $68 in 2023. 1 Allie Diefendorf with Phillip Hunt 2 Underclassmen attend BRYC’s first Future You Fair 3 Kloye Jones teaching to learn 4 Fellow taking Cornell notes during program

High School: Liberty College: Union College (2027)

Major: English/Pre-Health Profession Track

Kaydence is the latest in a long line of BRYC Fellows named Louisiana Young Heroes (including Class of 2023 cohort member Lindsay McKinney). But her achievements don’t end there. A Gates Scholar finalist who grew her ACT score four points while in BRYC, Kaydence received the FOSSI STEM Scholarship, Neighbors FCU Tuition Award, and BRYC Health Fellows Scholarship, as well as a full ride to Union, which means she’s redeeming over $290,000 in aid On campus, Kaydence works as a career assistant in the Becker Career Center and is a member of the Black Student Union, Minority Association of PreMedical Students, and Volleyball Club While Kaydence only had one year at BRYC, beginning with Camp S’More Points the summer before senior year, she made the most of every opportunity. “I loved how my BRYC mentor and program manager communicated so openly,” Kaydence said. “I wish I joined sooner!” #

High School: Scotlandville College: Louisiana State University (2027) Major: Forensic Chemistry

Among Malaysia’s proudest accomplishments is serving as Scotlandville’s salutatorian one year early. Finishing high school in only three years means she had less time than most to make an impression, but Malaysia’s outstanding academic record netted a full ride to LSU, where she’s preparing for a career investigating the nation’s 200,000+ unsolved criminal cases For Malaysia, studying forensic chemistry isn’t just about solutions; it’s about finding answers that will bring peace to families in crisis Her concern for others and attention to detail are two traits in high demand during shifts as a part-time BRYC operations associate Greeting current Fellows, Malaysia said she feels “nostalgic” and also “old ” While she’s making crucial connections with younger Fellows who can benefit from her experience, Malaysia won’t forget to spill the tea on one of her favorite BRYC memories: “Senior college tour in Georgia, World of Coca-Cola really fun!” #

Freshman Leader: Zach Legier

High School: Liberty College: Louisiana State University (2027)

Major: Mechanical Engineering

One glance at Zach’s résumé makes it clear that he’s a natural leader, with stints as a Liberty Student Council member, Fellowship of Christian Athletes vice-president, BREC camp counselor, and Mayor’s Youth Workforce intern. His leading legacy continues at LSU, where he’s on the fall 2023 Dean’s List, participates in the LSU Discover research program, and was chosen for Freshman Leadership Council (FLC) Underlying Zach’s ability to inspire is his talent for building relationships, whether it be with peers, younger children his family lovingly fostered, or BRYC mentor Anita Byrne Zach joined BRYC in ninth grade and was paired with Anita for both junior and senior years “Working with Zach at BRYC was a joy, as is continuing to support him as he embraces his collegiate experience in the classroom and through extracurriculars like FLC,” Anita shared. “His impact on LSU and the community is just beginning! I couldn’t be prouder.” #

BEATING THE ODDS

In late fall 2022, BRYC was one of only two LA-based nonprofits awarded an NBA Foundation grant.

To date, its BRYCs largest single investment from a corporate sponsor. NBA Foundation’s former executive director Greg Taylor shared: “For more than a decade, BRYC has helped young people realize and achieve their college and career goals through tutoring, counseling, internship placements, and exposure to higher education. We are proud to partner with and support the organization’s college access programs that help further our similar visions to increase economic opportunity in the Black community.”

Last summer, the Joe Burrow Foundation also awarded BRYC a “Do Good” grant, which supports

food insecurity and mental health initiatives in Ohio and Louisiana BRYC was one of 21 organizations (out of 170 applicants) to receive a grant in the Foundation’s second awards cycle While the NBA Foundation grant supported BRYC’s senior year programming as a whole, the Do Good grant zeroed in on College 101, a spring semester postsecondary transition program Led by Director of Persistence Catherine Molleno, College 101 teaches Fellows to manage the non-academic challenges lower-income students of color face through effective self-advocacy.

NEW LOCATIONS UNLOCKED

In fall 2024, BRYC will launch a third location, adding to our flagship downtown Baton Rouge and satellite Iberville Parish operations The new campus, only minutes from Woodlawn High in the 70817 Zip Code, will serve up to 200 8th-12th graders in 2024-2025 and grow to accommodate 350 Fellows by fall 2026 But we’re not done yet BRYC will pilot an in-school college counseling program at Liberty, McKinley, Northeast, Scotlandville, and Tara, with plans to expand the program to other area schools in future. In all, BRYC will serve 600 8th-12th graders across three sites and in five local schools, simultaneously deepening support for an alumni population soon to exceed 750. This expansion is thanks to our partner, East Baton Rouge Parish Public Schools, whose vision and investment are making BRYC’s services available to considerably more underserved youth.
