TOP MARKS #5
BRYCs nationwide ranking on The NonProfit Times list of the best small nonprofits to work for in the U S in 2024
In its first year vying for this recognition, BRYC ranked #18 among all nonprofits (small, medium, large) in the U.S.
For the fourth year in a row, BRYC ranked among the Business Report’s Best Places to Work in BR BRYC’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in advertising yielded the 2024 AAF-BR Mosaic Champion Award
WHY BRYC?
The promise of higher education
is that it will level an extremely uneven playing field, helping individuals and families secure better opportunities for future generations. This promise is made tangible in the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Master Plan, which states that 65% of jobs nationally and 56% of jobs statewide require a college degree or high value credential, requiring a 12% increase in degree attainment among working-age citizens by 2030
Despite constant questioning of its value, a bachelor’s degree remains a reliable path to economic mobility Yet, low-socioeconomic-status students and those from underrepresented demographics have the most difficulty entering and completing college affordably, both nationally and locally.
On average, Black college students hold $52K in loan debt
On average, Black college students hold $25K more loan debt than white students
Four years post graduation, Black students owe on average 188% more than white students

“BRYC is doing a phenomenal job with youth. I am continuously amazed at how my son has transformed in his time there and continues to grow academically and socially. BRYC has become my extended family and village I have partners in the work to help my son in his journey to be a more well-rounded individual and student ”
Lakesha R., Guardian
THE BRYC WAY
BRYC’s 9+-year continuum of services helps Fellows develop, practice, and execute self-regulation, socioemotional, and self-advocacy skills in pursuit of stronger academic performance; more diverse college and financial aid opportunities; persistence-to-degree conferral; and college-level employment Robust wraparound services and a trio of dedicated adults (program manager, mentor, community advocate) ensure Fellows have sufficient support both in and outside of BRYC.
In FY 2024, BRYC acquired a van and full-sized school bus to maximize accessibility to our three locations and ease the burden on BRYC families.
BRYC measures Fellows’ progress through our 8th–12th model in terms
Junior
8th–10th-Grade Fellows say: “Since joining BRYC, my study and time management skills have improved.”
WRITING
Writing is arguably the most powerful lever in the college process, especially given test-optionality and the end of race-conscious admissions Essays let Fellows showcase their writing ability while differentiating themselves by communicating their stories and strengths. Further, Fellows use writing to self-advocate, giving admissions officers context about adverse circumstances and special considerations. BRYC invests heavily in writing to produce high-quality applications and college-ready students.
INVOLVEMENT
BRYC helps Fellows find “their things” the activities that make them come alive Outside-of-class involvement is essential to strong college applications, but it’s more important for building world-ready people. Involved students have higher self-efficacy because they have built the teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills key for long-term success.
Fellows say: “BRYC has helped me identify extra-curricular activities that match my interests/goals ”
Fellows say: ”I’m involved with at least one other extracurricular outside BRYC.”
“With the help of the College Team, I was able to elevate my writing when it came to college and scholarship essays ”
Sophia B., Senior Fellow
RECOMMENDATION LETTERS
Like essays, letters of recommendation can pull critical weight in admissions decisions, and are often required for institutional aid, scholarship, internship, study abroad, and other applications with potential to yield significant financial or experiential benefit A strong recommendation letter is personalized, detailed, and illuminating, which necessitates a close relationship between a student and recommender. BRYC encourages such relationships between Fellows and their mentor, program manager, teachers, coaches, etc., and helps Fellows practice selfassured, fluent interactions with adults in their orbit.
Fellows say: “Since joining BRYC, the time I spend participating in extra-curricular activities has ”
In February 2024, BRYC’s first “Future You Fair” introduced Fellows to colleges, companies, and organizations, sparking post-secondary goals
2023–2024 Fellows reported participating in the following extracurriculars with BRYC’s support: 100 Black Men
“Since joining BRYC, I feel more confident interacting with adults and peers.”
“I care about my relationship with my BRYC mentor.”
SENIOR SHOWCASE
Gates Scholar: Makayla Bey
High School: Indira Mura Institute College: University of Houston
Intended Major: Graphic Design
Legacy Fellow Makayla Bey (older brother Royale is a junior at LSU) joined BRYC in ninth grade and it shows. Her GPA, ACT score, and college résumé put Makayla squarely in the running for the prestigious last-dollar Gates Scholarship. But with over 53,000 applicants, there was no sitting on this opportunity. Through multiple rounds of essays and interviews, Makayla and her BRYC program managers prepped with only one outcome in mind: to win. In April, Makayla was among the 750 seniors nationwide (top 1%) chosen for the 2024 Gates Scholars cohort. An aspiring graphic designer and entrepreneur, Makayla was also awarded the BRYCexclusive Tammie Phillips Business Excellence Scholarship in support of her goal to establish a creative marketing firm.

FINANCIAL AID
Students nationwide faced unprecedented challenges due to a worst-case-scenario “new FAFSA” rollout. BRYC’s seniors were no exception. Knowing how crucial FAFSA completion is for Fellows, BRYC deployed many proactive and responsive interventions to minimize harm. As a result, Fellows still secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid, scholarships, and grants.
INTRODUCING BRYC AIRLINE
Thanks to a first-of-its-kind investment from the East Baton Rouge Parish School District, BRYC was able to launch a second campus in EBR Parish In February 2024, BRYC signed a four-year lease at 14141 Airline Highway, a well-priced location that: avoids geographic redundancy; increases accessibility for Fellows and Guardians; increases proximity to historically underrepresented schools; ensures capacity for future growth; and ensures suitability of facilities and preparedness for natural disasters

BRYC’S IN-SCHOOL COLLEGE COUNSELING PILOT
For the first time in BRYC’s history,
we will utilize school hours and spaces to deliver best-in-class college counseling to a pilot cohort of five EBRPSS schools in the coming year (2024–2025), ensuring hard-working students don’t have to choose between an existing after-school responsibility and structured, expert guidance for meeting their postsecondary goals and potential. The in-school pilot is also made possible through demand and financial investment from the district, school administrators, students, and families.
“Students at Tara desperately need additional college and career counseling,” said Tara High Principal John Haymon. “The mentors at BRYC address this need in an upbeat, proactive, and positive manner ”
BRYC aims to launch an in-school presence in multiple EBR Parish schools This initiative will not replace BRYC’s cornerstone after-school model, but rather extend our services to a population that is equally deserving of high-value support

“I want to major in elementary education and become a thirdgrade teacher. I've always had the dream to pour my knowledge out on those younger than me. Lots of people say the ‘wanting to be a teacher phase’ goes away, but mine has grown stronger.”

PERSISTENCE
For 15 years, 100% of BRYC seniors have graduated high school with postsecondary plans and minimal debt, becoming alumni who have maintained 82% college completion at 2- and 4year schools. Nationally, only 15% of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds earn bachelor’s degrees within eight years of high school graduation. That’s why BRYC’s mission extends beyond entering college and includes persisting through to graduation, securing a career track job, and becoming economically mobile.
MEET MS. KENYA DIRECTOR OF CAREER SERVICES
In December 2023, BRYC welcomed its first-ever director of career services, Kenya Warren-Hollins A Southern University alum and former Miss Southern, Kenya boasts a decade of recruitment and career coaching experience At BRYC, her singular focus is to help our alumni get situated professionally.
This position is a natural outgrowth of BRYC’s efforts to ensure Fellows don’t just enter college but convert their degrees into career-track employment, especially in the Capital Region. BRYC strives to be an enduring support system in Fellows’ lives, recognizing that, for youth with limited financial and social capital, the road through college and into the workforce is riddled with obstacles After years of helping alumni pursue jobs and graduate school in an ad hoc manner, we are thrilled to formalize this dimension of our work, helping more graduates redeem the economic promise of higher education Kenya is equally thrilled to be joining the BRYC team
Kenya (second from left) and BRYC team members hosted dozens of Alumni at Uncle Earl’s for a career services launch event in February 2024
