SPOTLIGHT SPOTLIGHT ON Ladd BORIS A Journey Back to the Stage and the Role of a Lifetime

For Ladd Boris, playing Sancho Panza in Man of La Mancha is more than just another role—it’s a calling. As he steps onto the stage at The Naples Players for the first time, he brings with him a wealth of experience, personal connection, and an unwavering passion for the role that has shaped his journey in the theater.

This marks the seventh time Boris has played Sancho, a role that has drawn him back to the stage after a decade-long hiatus. “I am having the time of my life,” he says. “I am working with an incredible bunch of people filled with love for what they do. There’s a unique joy in performing in a community-driven theater, where the focus is on the love of the craft and collaboration.”

His journey to Naples seems almost fated. Living in New Jersey with his husband, Boris hadn’t planned on returning to the theater until a serendipitous social

media connection led to an audition with TNP. The universe continued to guide him forward—he secured housing for his three-month stay; his employer, Allstate Insurance, allowed him to work remotely; and, in a poignant twist of fate, his mother passed away just two weeks before his audition. “The first time I played Sancho, my father passed away two weeks before I began rehearsals,” Boris reflects. Despite his personal loss, he remained committed to his passion and moved forward with his audition at TNP.

Boris’ love for the arts began early. Born in New York City and raised in New Jersey, he took a bus alone at 14 to see a performance at the Metropolitan Opera. At 15, he made his professional debut in the iconic film FAME while attending the prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts. His career took off from there, leading him

to perform at the Metropolitan Opera, on Broadway, and in theaters across the country for over 30 years. Locally, he has graced the stage at TheatreZone, even previously playing Sancho.

For Boris, Sancho is more than just a comedic sidekick—he’s a character filled with devotion and purpose. “Sancho has a strong love for Don Quixote—his existence and his joy are a result of being with him,” Boris explains. “He was granted permission to disappear from a life he didn’t care for. He would go to the ends of the earth for Don Quixote.” The role resonates deeply with him, particularly in a powerful moment when Don Quixote dies in Sancho’s arms—a scene that mirrors Boris’ own life, having held his father as he passed.

Returning to the stage with The Naples Players has been a transformative experience for Boris. He praises Bryce Alexander, the theater’s CEO & Executive Artistic Director, for his vision and leadership. “Bryce is a brilliant man. You can tell he loves the piece. He knows how to work with people to get the best out of each performer,” he says.

Beyond the production, Boris has been deeply moved by Naples’ vibrant cultural scene and The Naples Players’ commitment to youth outreach. “Nothing is more important than opening doors for our youth to appreciate and engage in the arts,” he says. “We must nurture our youth and give them permission to dream.”

As the curtain rises on Man of La Mancha, Boris stands on stage, fully immersed in the role he loves most. “Being back on stage is like putting on a pair of your favorite jeans,” he smiles. “They just feel great.”

And for Boris, this journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Why Optimism Really Matters

Don Quixote’s belief in the goodness and potential of the world, despite its harsh realities, is unwavering. It’s why audiences have loved and rooted for Don Quixote for more than 60 years. It’s why no matter what’s going on in our personal lives, our country, or the world, we find a “happy home” in the theater where Man of La Mancha is playing.

His optimism is endearing, hopeful, naïve, frustrating, confusing, and childlike ALL AT ONCE! He views the world not as it is, but as it should be, seeing beauty and nobility in even the most mundane and squalid circumstances. His mantra, “To dream the impossible dream,” says everything about his relentless pursuit of an ideal world.

Throughout the musical, Quixote’s optimism goes beyond himself; it transforms those around him. Aldonza, the cynical and disillusioned barmaid, initially rejects Quixote’s praise as the noblewoman Dulcinea. But his persistent belief in her inherent goodness eventually leads her to see herself through his eyes, suggesting to us that optimism can generate real change and improvement.

In the face of setbacks and ridicule, Quixote stays steadfast to his mission. We come to see his optimism as a courageous choice - striving for goodness in the face of despair. “The Impossible Dream” becomes our anthem for perseverance and hope.

Miguel de Cervantes, the author within the play who tells the story of Don Quixote, also embodies this theme. Imprisoned and facing the Inquisition, Cervantes uses his story to uplift and inspire his fellow prisoners. His storytelling becomes a testament to the power of optimism and imagination to transcend dire circumstances.

To strengthen the importance of being optimistic, the musical contrasts it with the pragmatism and cynicism of other characters like Dr. Carrasco and the innkeeper. The struggle between idealism and realism suggests that though optimism may not always align with reality, it’s a powerful - even necessary - vision for striving towards a better world.

CAST BIOS

(IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

LADD BORIS (Sancho) made his professional debut in the movie FAME while actually being a student at the famed high school. He went on to see his dreams come true singing at the Metropolitan Opera. Later he went on to perform in Broadway shows and around the country for over 30 years. He has performed locally in several productions at TheatreZone (including Sancho) and is very grateful to take this important journey, again, here at The Naples Players. Always “Dare to Dream”!

JAMIELYNN BUCCI (Aldonza) is thrilled to be returning to The Naples Players after last appearing as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Other select credits include: Something Rotten!, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, An Ideal Husband, These Shining Lives, The Rocky Horror Show, The 39 Steps, In Flight: The Story of Sabine Van Dam (Gulfshore Playhouse Outreach),and Charles Ives Take Me Home. A New York native and graduate of the University of Florida, she also specializes in wig & makeup design (42nd Street, She Kills Monsters) and has worked across Italy teaching English through theater. Big thanks to this incredible team!

BEVERLY CANELL (Maria) is so grateful to be part of a musical again. Thanks to the artistic team, cast and crew for welcoming me back. Special thanks to my knitting friends and my roadie, Ed, for their unwavering support.

BELINDA CONIGLIARO

(Ensemble) is thrilled to be working with The Naples Players again in their beautiful new theater. Man of La Mancha marks her third appearance with TNP, having previously played the Bird Woman in Mary Poppins and the Patroness in The Making of Scrooge. Belinda trained in New York at NYU with Stella Adler before taking a 32-year hiatus to pursue a career with Continental/United Airlines at RSW Airport in Fort Myers. She looks forward to many more collaborations with The Naples Players, spreading her acting wings in this next chapter of her life.

JIM CORSICA (Innkeeper/Governor) was most recently seen on Naples Players stages as Scrooge in the staged performance of The Making of Scrooge, the Grand Re-Opening Extravaganza, Bellomy/The Fantasticks, Gus/Southern Comforts and Ranger Tom/Escanaba in da Moonlight. Elsewhere, Jim was part of the Gulfshore Playhouse production, Remember: The Story of Abe Price, for three years; was Harry Brock/Born Yesterday and Batman (ret.)/Bruce Kane One-Acts for the Marco Players; Salieri’s Cook/Amadeus for TheatreZone; Bill Sr./Clever Little Lies for The Studio Players; and Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare In Paradise’s production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. This one is for the lovely Dale, who has supported his theater madness for over twenty years.

CHRISTIAN DeSALVO (Anselmo/Barber) is currently a junior at the Community School of Naples and is honored to play a part in portraying the famously inspirational narrative of Man of La Mancha on the marvelous Kizzie stage. Additionally, he is incredibly thankful for the opportunity to perform in his first mainstage production at TNP and learn from such a wonderful cast of talented adults. Most recently, he was seen performing as The Hermit in TNPA’s 2024 production of Young Frankenstein. His gratitude goes out to his friends and family, along with the TNP staff and crew, for their extraordinary efforts in making this production so magical. Proverbs 19:21.

BAILEE FYOCK (Antonia/Dancer/Dance Captain) graduated from North Central College with a Musical Theatre degree in Naperville, IL. She has been dancing competitively for many years and also started singing at a very young age. While having performed in shows back home in Illinois, Bailee is very excited to start working on this show since moving to Florida this August!

NOAH GARCIA (Paco) A recent graduate with a degree in Theatre from Florida Gulf Coast University, Noah has a deep love and appreciation for performing. This is his first production at The Naples Players and he is excited to be a part of Man of La Mancha with such an amazing and talented group of individuals!

AUSTIN

GARDNER (Don Quixote) is proud to “sally forth” into his second performance with The Naples Players in the beautiful Kizzie Theater. Hailing from the east coast of Florida, he has performed all over the state in a wide array of plays, musicals, and Shakespeare productions. His fortuitous discovery of TNP in 2023 prompted him to audition for The Hunchback of Notre Dame, resulting in his portrayal of the odious Claude Frollo. From then on, his sights were set on returning to Naples and taking part in this beloved story, surrounded by the dedicated cast, crew, and volunteers who bring it to life. Austin hopes that, through this powerful production, an indelible impression remains—that to live well is to live morally, which is the same as being free.

MICHELLE JIMENEZ (Ensemble) is a recent graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with a BFA in Theatre. She is a kindergarten instructor at TNP and her previous credits include assistant directing La Comedia of Errors as well as The Wizard of Oz at Palmetto Ridge High School. She is very grateful to TNP for the opportunity to be a part of this production and would like to thank the cast and crew for all of their hard work! She would also like to thank her friends and family for all of their love and support and hopes you enjoy the show!

Life in Naples Life in Naples

Name a seat, leave a legacy!

Don’t miss out on this chance to have yourself or a loved one memorialized as an important part of our arts-loving community by naming a seat in our Kizzie, Price, or Glass Theaters.

Hundreds of thousands of patrons, volunteers, and other guests will pass through our newly renovated theater, and your name will be evidence of your dedication to the arts and TNP for years to come.

Seats range from $500 to $5,000 based on location.

Thank You TO OUR DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS

This past season 590 volunteers donated 50,716 hours to making Season 70 a success!

Season 70 echoed of days past when The Naples Players staged performances in schools, churches, and living rooms simply to keep the arts alive when they were between facilities or without a home base of their own.

Despite being in several locations across Naples, one thing remained united - our dedicated volunteer base .

Thank you to these amazing volunteers who continued to give of their time and talents this past season. We could not have done it without you.
