LIVE. WORK. PLAY. Café dishes up fresh hospitality It’s shortly before midday on a sizzling hot Friday and the Timbermill Café is buzzing. Some patrons are enjoying an early lunch; others are sharing a coffee with friends, whilst regulars stop by for a take-away. Café proprietor, Jo Whitney glides from table to table greeting customers, taking orders and clearing tables as if she has been in hospitality her whole life. Actually, Jo is a hairdresser by trade, and her husband Travis Murphy is in the roofing industry, but they took over management of the Timbermill Café on January 9 in their first foray into hospitality.

It has been a hectic few months for the couple who live in Timbertop with their two sons. “It has been a baptism of fire,” says Jo with a laugh, adding, “We’ve had to learn a lot, but the customers have been great and so have our staff.”

Jo tries to source ingredients for the café’s food locally. Each Friday Jo’s friend, Kylie, accompanies Jo to the Dandenong Market to stock up on fresh produce. Beaconsfield’s Gourmet Butcher Shop and Bellevue Orchard are also suppliers. Their milk comes from a Frankston supplier and Strada Café supplies gluten free products. Timbermill Café is also licensed serving wines from Crittenden Estate on the Mornington Peninsula.

Jo’s motivation for taking on the thriving business is simple. “It has been an itch I’ve needed to scratch for a long time. I love being in the kitchen and I’m particularly passionate about food styling, which I guess fits with my creative background,” she explains.

Since taking over, Jo has freshened up the café adding her own decorative touches and gently tweaking the menu. “We didn’t want to make big changes to the menu because clearly the food is working really well for our customers,” she says.

The busy couple is supported by a close-knit team including Jo’s Dad’s partner, Jen, who helps manage the café, their Nepalese Chef, Bikas and two baristas, Tylah and Lina, who make sure the coffee is excellent. “When we took over everyone said the coffee needs to be good and everything else will fall into place,” Jo says.

Popular dishes include corn fritters with avocado, bacon, relish and a poached egg and the ancient grain salad with house made humus, haloumi, flat bread and slow cooked lamb. A new addition to the menu, the Cuban Reuben sandwich, is stuffed with corned beef and slow cooked pork, Swiss cheese and pickles. Jo’s favourite type of food is Vietnamese, which is reflected in her Vietnamese chicken salad found on the specials board.

Jo enjoys getting to know her regular customers. She calls them her VIPs. Some visit every day treating the cafe as a home away from home. “Our regulars are here all the time. Everyone knows the cafe has a beautiful welcoming feel,” she says.

A Movie Under the Stars On Saturday, February 23, Timbertop Estate finished off summer with a bang! The Moonlight Cinema night was another bustling event with over 200 Timbertop residents gathering at Hicks Reserve to enjoy a night under the stars.

Residents were asked to vote for the movie they wanted to be screened at the event. The online voting was close, but in the end The Incredibles 2 won!

There was also a chance to win 1 of 10 ex Moonlight Cinema reclining bean bag chairs. A big thank you to everyone who attended the Moonlight Cinema Night. It was great to see so many Timbertop residents and families enjoying Hicks Reserve.

It was a perfect, warm summer night, as residents happily strolled from their homes carrying picnic blankets and cushions to watch the film in comfort. Dr. Mark Yee and his wife Melissa celebrate their one year anniversary with Timbertop Estate and they couldn't be happier. Since relocating to Australia from Malaysia three years ago, the family have welcomed their first child. It’s an exciting time for the couple, but it has its challenges too as both their families are currently living in Malaysia. One thing they have no regrets about is moving to Timbertop. “It’s our one year milestone in this estate! We’re so glad we walked through those doors and met the Timbertop Sales Team,” said Mark.

Mark also explained how the communal aspect of the estate was another factor that contributed in the decision to make Timbertop Estate their new home.

Parklea Pakenham Show Surprises On a glorious sunny Saturday, great crowds of people showed up at the PB Ronald Reserve for the 2019 Parklea Pakenham Show. The day was full of fun and surprises. Even better, Parklea’s continued sponsorship of this event meant this exciting day, jam-packed with shows and activities, was free for the whole family. Children were especially delighted by some unusual unexpected visitors. The Australian Reptile Show presented by Reptile Encounters was a real highlight for the kids. This live interactive show was an exciting way to introduce children to a variety of reptiles, native mammals and birds, such as the dragon lizard, sugar glider possum and red-tailed black cockatoo. “Kids these days are a lot less likely to encounter reptiles or native animals. We are all about reconnecting people with nature,” said Josh Cox of Reptile Encounters. “We bring out a handful of animals and talk about fun quirky facts to do with each one. Depending on how big the audience is, we try to make it as

interactive as possible,” he explained. “Kids are blown away. Sometimes they are fearful of the animals, but for kids it’s like going down a skateboard ramp. It’s a natural adrenaline high. They love it,” he said. Visitors were also treated to live musical performances by the Police Band and the Cardinia Civic Concert Band. There was a rare meet and greet with Paw Patrol. Showgoers were encouraged to enter the gumboot throwing and paper plane competitions. There was something for everyone. “We value the importance and tradition of the Pakenham Show. Parklea’s sponsorship helps organisers offer free entry and entertainment for all ages,” said Parklea Sales and Marketing Manager Jarod Mills. There could be no doubt that a good time was had by all.

Fresh Face from Familiar Family Mature beyond his years, Eden Facey-Smith, Sales Consultant at Parklea, has property and development in his blood and his future. The Facey name has helped develop the face of the South East and it seems with Eden on-board it will be for many years to come. Eden’s Great-Great Grandfather, Frank Facey, established Frank Facey Real Estate in 1917. Facey Industrial Commercial has specialised in property development in the South East for over 100 years now. Working alongside his Great Uncle Andrew Facey at Parklea for over a year and a half, Eden has high hopes for the future and is dedicated to helping the land developer create quality community estates. How did you get into working in Land Development? During high school I had a part time job at a supermarket. The work was repetitive. I knew then that I needed to start focusing on work that really interested me, in a place where I could continue to learn and develop new skills to build a career. I have always been fascinated by the way an area can essentially go from a blank canvas to a thriving community. It’s a really exciting concept. With my family connection, it was a no brainer that this was the direction I wanted to take. Andrew Facey is my
