Towersey Festival have announced a ‘chart-topping’ 2016 line-up.

Billy Bragg, The Wonder Stuff, Kate Rusby and Midge Ure are among the headline acts lined-up for the 52nd Towersey Festival (26-29 August 2016, Thame, Oxfordshire).

They’re joined by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, Tom Robinson Band, Edward II, 9Bach, The Young’uns, Nizlopi and Nell Bryden, plus enduring Towersey favourites Roy Bailey, Rusty Shackle and Nancy Kerr and James Fagan.

Influenced by Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and the DIY punk scene, Billy Bragg is one of the UK’s most respected songwriters, capable of penning both biting social commentary and tender love songs. Bragg last topped the Towersey bill in 2011.

The Wonder Stuff head to the festival as part of their 30th anniversary celebrations. Hailing from the West Midlands, the band scored a run of big-selling Top 40 hits in the early ‘90s including The Size Of A Cow, Circlesquare and the number one Dizzy. Fronted by Miles Hunt, ‘The Stuffies’ continue to release exuberant new music.

Hailed for her ‘unique contribution to music’, Yorkshire’s Kate Rusby was recipient of the prestigious British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors’ Gold Badge Award in 2014. In a career that’s seen her collaborate with artists as diverse as Ronan Keating, Paul Weller, Richard Thompson, Blur’s Graham Coxon and Radiohead’s Philip Selway, she’s remained true to her acoustic roots.

As a solo artist and band member, Midge Ure has contributed to a staggering number of hits. His career spans teen sensations Silk, Irish rockers Thin Lizzy, Sex Pistol’s spin-off The Rich Kids, new romantics Visage, and electronic pioneers Ultravox. He also co-wrote and produced Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? Ure’s most recent album, Breathe Again, saw the musician revisit his Celtic roots, while the accompanying tour boasted such ‘greatest hits’ as If I Was, Vienna, No Regrets, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and Fade To Grey.

Tennis Club is an ace Thame Tennis Club, on Queens Road in Thame, has received two huge accolades from the Oxfordshire Lawn Tennis Association (OLTA) at an awards ceremony on 8th February 2016.

Thame Tennis Club beat off 40 other tennis clubs in the county to win the prestigious ‘Aegon Oxfordshire County Club of the Year 2015’ award. It was also an important evening for Thame tennis coach, Mark Wilkins, who was born and bred in the town, as he won ‘Aegon Oxfordshire County Coach of the Year 2015’. Mark Wilkins is due to take over as Head Coach later in 2016 having started as a junior player and joined the coaching staff having studied sports science at University.

Nicky Maskens, chair of the Oxfordshire LTA and main board member selected the winners and now both Thame Tennis Club and Mark Wilkins now go forward to the regional awards.

Daniel Morris, Vice Chancellor of Thame Tennis Club said: “For Thame Tennis Club this is amazing recognition and we are so proud to be a growing club with home grown coaching talent.

“During 2015, Thame Tennis Club relaid four of our courts with the latest in artificial clay technology and a member of the LTA joined us from London for the official opening of the new courts.”

Chinnor celebrates Chinnor is celebrating the opening of a new sports and social club. To be known as Chinnor Community Pavilion, the brand new state-of-the-art single storey building off Station Road has been the result of fundraising activities by the Parish Council, coupled with grants from Sport England, the Football Foundation and South Oxfordshire District Council.

The Community Pavilion includes a suite of four team and two officials changing rooms to cater for the adjacent sports pitches, tennis courts and playing field, and will also act as a community hub with a function room, club room, bar and kitchen. Chinnor Parish Council will shortly relocate its office into the new building. The Pavilion’s sports facilities and party suites will be available for hire, and a regular range of activities will be on offer from fitness classes to clubs.

Councillor Pat Hayward, Chair of Chinnor Parish Council, said “The Parish Council are delighted that the building is now complete. We are indebted to PCMS Design who have not only

designed and specified this wonderful building, but guided and supported us through the whole process. The PCMS Design team have done us proud!”

here are people all around Thame who help their neighbours, support local groups or go out of their way for others in their community. That is why, eight years ago, the Town Council launched Thame Town Awards as a way to recognise, thank and celebrate those special people who are working hard to make our community a safer, more vibrant and happier place to live.

Each year the Council invites members of the public to nominate their local unsung heroes, and this year is no different! They want you to tell them about individuals and groups who have made a special contribution to life in Thame. This could be a volunteer, a teacher, a shop worker, someone old, someone young, pretty much anyone!

There are seven categories in which you can make a nomination: Sporting Achievement Someone of any age who has shown real dedication to their sport. Perhaps a player, a coach, even someone who supports your team from the side-lines.

Voluntary Individual or Organisation Any person or group that has worked tirelessly for the good of the community.

Thame is a hive of community activity, which local cause deserves your nomination?

Person of Courage Someone of any age who has overcome personal adversity or who is facing special challenges on an everyday basis.

Lifetime Achievement Someone who has made a real contribution to Thame over a long period of time. They could be anyone from a teacher or carer to a fundraiser or event organiser. This award can be made posthumously.

Young Achiever A young person up to the age of 18 who has excelled in a particular skill or discipline. Maybe a passionate campaigner, a star pupil or a great musician.

Service with a Smile A business or an individual that consistently provides a faultless and friendly service.

Creative Arts Achievement Anyone who has contributed to the artistic life of Thame.

To date, Thame Town Council has awarded 41 Town Awards to local people.

Sunglasses might be a cool fashion accessory but they are also good for our eyes. Andrew Cohen visits Ivan Cammack, the Thame-based optometrist, to discover why.

hey might be cool and stylish, but sunglasses have an important job to do. That’s to keep the sun out of our eyes. More specifically, to protect your eyes from the ultra-violet rays that drench the world during spring and the summer.

“We all put sun cream on our skin to protect ourselves from burning, and it’s the ultra-violet light we are safeguarding against”, explains Ivan Cammack. “Well, our eyes can be just as susceptible to the harmful effects

of too much exposure to ultra-violet radiation.

It can damage the cornea, lens and even the retina. Long-term exposure to ultra-violet rays can mean you are more likely to get cataracts earlier, and there is an increased risk of developing macular degeneration.

While parts of our bodies have the ability to repair damaged cells, the lens of the eye is an exception.

It needs as much protection as possible.”

There’s a bit more science. “UV radiation isn’t just a problem in the summer,” adds Ivan. “Outdoors in almost any location, whatever the season, we get exposed to ultra-violet light. And don’t imagine that cloudy days are their own protection.

UV radiation can penetrate overcast skies and can reflect off all sorts of surfaces – snow, water, concrete, cars, pavements.

Younger people are especially vulnerable to the effects of UV radiation since they have larger pupils, clearer lenses and tend to spend more time outside.

Short-term damage is hard to notice, but over the longer-term sunlight can cause irreversible harm to the structures of the eye. That’s why it’s important to wear good protection throughout all the stages of our lives.”

“People who have had cataract operations are especially susceptible to ultra-violet rays,” continues Ivan.

“Many intra-ocular implants do not provide such good UV protection for the retina as the natural lens which will have been removed. Ordinary specs may block some of the rays, but it really

is recommended that anyone who has had treatment for cataracts to wear good sunglasses.”

Is there anything else we can do to keep our eyes healthy during summer apart from donning a pair of cool shades?

“Diet can help,” answers Ivan. “Dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and spring greens all contain lutein and zeaxanthin nutrients that boost the eyes’ natural protection. The omega 3 in oily fish is a benefit too.” You can get your 5-a-day and help keep your eyes healthy it seems.

“Prescription sunglasses are no less modish and stylish than any others,” says Dispensing Optician, Ruth Pigott, who has just joined the conversation.

Sunglasses aren’t just practical. They are fun and stylish too. We have such a great range of sunglasses. There’s a

A long story Debrah Williams visits Studio 86 on a day when Jamie and Charlotte tackle three young women with lovely long hair.

S

tudio 86 – on Thame High Street is owned by Jamie Michelle Pfeifer. It’s best described as a boutique salon and Jamie has really impressed clients with her creative skills for over 4 years now.

Jamie has a devoted list of clients. But its not just the stylish and imaginative cuts, and subtle, elegant colourings, that keep her customers coming back.

They simply love the relaxed atmosphere. It’s an oasis of calm on a busy High St. Having said that, I notice that Jamie is a stickler for good time management. “There’s nothing worse than arriving for an appointment and then having to sit around waiting”, she says.

Relaxed yet efficient is the way at Studio 86. On those rare occasions that circumstances dictate that Jamie is running behind schedule, she will contact her client to warn them so they delay their journey.

Where time is deliberately flexible at Studio 86, is the working hours. ”I have clients that can only visit in the evening so we open to accommodate their hours, not mine. Many of my clients are busy working 9-5 or simply hard working mums”.

Often it is these mums that are so happy with Jamie’s cutting and styling that they recommend Jamie to their daughters. I visited Studio 86 when

three such customers were booked in.

Three 17 year old girls, and as with most young girls, blessed with long flowing hair.

Long hair brings its own challenges as well as Jamie points out. “ Young girls love to have their hair long and don’t think they need to get it cut regularly” she says. “In fact, they couldn’t be more wrong. To keep long hair looking its best you should have it cut at least every three months. I often cut up to a years growth from some young girls and their hair is in a terrible state due to all the split ends”, she adds.

Jamie’s three clients were Jose and Corri from Watlington and Rosie from Bledlow Ridge.

Jose’s hair is naturally curly. Jamie shaped and straightened her hair. One length at the back and tapered at the front.

Corri has long natural hair, but is also a fan of extensions. Jamie recommended strand by strand extensions, rather than the cruder clip ons. Jamie tonged Corri’s hair and layered it to give extra body.

Rosie’s hair was also tonged. Jamie used Velcro rollers for increased volume and this produced a more natural curl.

Jamie is happy styling women’s, men’s and children’s hair. Jamie’s assistant Charlotte relaxes you with a superb head massage and follows this up with a hand massage. So you are already in a capable pair of hands before Jamie has started to work her magic.

A

t the end of November last year, I was hacking out on my horse in Bledlow when she became agitated by some delivery men trundling a cooker up a driveway down a small country lane. They failed to acknowledge her obvious distress and on returning to the van, which I was attempting to persuade her to pass, they jumped in, slamming both doors right next to me, started up the engine and roared off down the lane. In her fright and haste to get away from the van, she threw me off and bolted back the way we’d come – unfortunately to the main B4009 - where she was hit by a van and sustained a broken neck and facial lacerations. Without dwelling on the state of her, she is remarkably still here and three months through a long road to recovery. I don’t yet know how this incident will affect her long term.

Now I’m not looking for sympathy here. My point is this: the whole thing could have been avoided through some basic consideration and common sense from the delivery men who frightened her through their ignorance.

This is not an isolated incident.

Another rider, Lucy Bounden who keeps her horse next door to mine, was hit whilst riding on the very same B4009 last year by a driver who claimed she didn’t even see Lucy in broad daylight.

Thankfully no-one was badly injured although Lucy’s horse to this day is nervous in traffic having previously been bomb proof. Similarly, Emily Dunn and her daughter Izzy, both from Thame, were hit by a car in January this year whilst out hacking. The driver was travelling too fast around a blind bend on the Claydon Road and was unable to slow down in time. In both incidents, the riders were wearing high visibility vests. No one was badly hurt, but once again it highlights the fact that roads are becoming increasingly busy and timepoor people are driving dangerously.

According to British Horse Society figures, there are over 3,000 accidents on the roads each year, involving several fatalities, and this number is on the increase.

Not only do I ride horses on the roads, I also cycle and run regularly on the roads and often experience similar ignorance from motorists. Many times I’ve found myself diving into the ditch as a car passes too close to me, or being inches from a car as it speeds past, perilously close to my bike.

The difference with horses versus bikes and individuals is that you’re dealing with a large and powerful animal; they are ‘flight’ animals which makes them unpredictable and easily scared.

If a speeding car, a sudden noise, or anything unfamiliar frightens a horse, their natural reaction is to take flight from the perceived threat. As was the case with me and my horse, this can be sudden and could take them straight into the road and the path of a car. Even an experienced rider on a well behaved horse could find themselves struggling to keep control in this situation. Knowing how to drive around them is vital for keeping not only them, but you the driver, and others around you safe. Being hit by over half a ton of panicking animal can cause a lot of damage, as the van driver who was hit by horse will testify to, and could easily have been fatal for horse and driver. He was not a careless driver here either, but the victim of circumstance.

I think I speak for many riders when I say that we do try as much as we can to stay off main roads. However, the reality is that to get to many bridleways and quieter lanes, it’s often necessary to be on a main road for a short period of time.

Many drivers would be well advised to look at the Highway Code and remind themselves of rule 215, which says: ‘Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take extra care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider.

Look out for horse riders’ and drivers’ signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard‘.

Similarly, section 163 of the Highway Code states that road users should ‘Give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car’.

Don’t get me wrong – there are some very considerate and careful drivers out there, but I believe that many need educating in how to drive safely on roads that are shared with horse riders, bikes, pedestrians and runners. Roads are not just for cars. In the meantime, I’m thankful that my horse survived and that I had insurance – the vet’s bills have been high and I’ve yet to be presented with a public liability claim by the driver of the van that hit her. It has also knocked my confidence in getting back on her – a bridge I have yet to cross if and when I can ever ride her again.

t seems to me that somewhere over the last few years the HEALTH part of health & fitness seems to have been lost. A lot of people are now so caught up in the media world that they are chasing unrealistic images of people they see in magazines, newspapers, on Instagram and Facebook, etc. Because of this have your goals also got caught up?

It sounds bizarre but stick with me and hopefully you’ll understand my thinking.

So let’s look at the dictionary definition of “upgrade”:

Whether you recognise it or not, you have been upgrading on a daily basis for a long time. I bet a few years ago you used a VCR, a CD player and read actual books made of paper. You probably also used a map or directions printed or scribbled on a piece of paper to find an address. You also remembered many more phone numbers, all landline numbers too!

You had a TV that took 3 people to move it because it was as big as it was wide.

On your mobile you were pressing the number 2 three times to get a C. As you can see from the examples, upgrades are first and foremost about change.

If you have ever waited in anticipation for a new version of your phone, got excited by the delivery of a product you ordered online, or kept checking to see how many likes you received for a new Facebook post, you welcome change much more than you think.

In fact, I would say you love change.

But how about upgrading yourself?

Think of yourself as the most important technology you have.

Just as your other technology is constantly evolving and suggesting an upgrade, make the same go for you.

As the programmes that operate your phone, computer and TV may have radically changed in the last few years, how about the programmes and habits that control your life?

Are you more advanced in your exercise, sleep, diet and work habits than a year ago?

Do Chiropractors just treat back pain?

hen most people think of chiropractic care, they usually think of how it’s used to treat back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, leg pain or other type of musculoskeletal ailment related with the spine. If you do think so, you will be right. This is for good reason, since a chiropractor generally works on the spine, but there is more to it.

How is Chiropractic care more than just about back pain?

While chiropractic is about back pain, it’s also about so much more. Many people wonder, however, whether a chiropractor can help with anything more than just back pain. The answer? Absolutely!

Chiropractic care has increasingly gained population in the last several years as patients begin to realise the value behind the services. In the past, and still to some degree today, the practice of Chiropractic has been misunderstood and compartmentalised into the singular category of traditional adjustments for back pain. Your back hurts, you go to a chiropractor; they help you, and then you’re on your way. In reality, this perception is far removed from the truth of chiropractic care. This myth not only gives a large misinterpretation of chiropractic adjustments, it also fails to include the countless other services offered by the majority of chiropractors.

But how?

Chiropractors are usually working on your back and the reason for this is that your back carries your spinal cord protected by 26 moveable vertebrae. Your spinal cord is simply an extension of your brain which comprise one of the most important organs in your body, your Central Nervous System. In simple terms, your Central Nervous System is in charge of coordinating, regulating and controlling every cell organ and tissue in your body, it is the master controller of the trillion of cells in your body.

These moveable vertebrae in your back can misalign due to physical trauma (ie: falls, poor posture, accidents) chemical stress (ie: poor diet, drugs, lack of hydration), or emotional stress.

These misalignments can cause nerve interference, and are called, “Vertebral Subluxations”. Studies from the University of Colorado have shown that just the weight of a small coin on a nerve can substantially reduce nerve function by up to 60%. This in turn can cause ill health due to the stress placed on the nerves exiting along the vertebrae in your spinal cord. For example if your brain can not communicate properly with your stomach and vice-versa this in turn can affect the overall health of your digestive system and now you may present with digestive and stomach problems. See illustration to the right. If the irritation is in the nerves in your neck you may experience headaches, migraines, dizziness, neck/shoulder/arm pain. If the irritation is in the nerves in your low back then you may experience leg pain, bladder problems, painful menstruation, among many other conditions.

My job as a Chiropractor is to find these misalignments (Subluxations) in your spine and restore proper movement and function to the fixated and misaligned vertebrae, thus restoring proper communication between your brain and your body. This is the reason why chiropractors will spend time palpating your spine to locate and correct misaligned vertebrae thus allowing your body to express full potential health.

Take for example an actual patient who consulted me early this year with leg pains, low back pain and headaches while 6 months pregnant. Due to complications with the delivery of her first baby and her present condition, doctors advised a planned c-section to minimise delivery complications. I adjusted this lady for 3 months and while under care, her headaches subsided, sciatic pain and low back pain disappeared. What surprised her the most was that at 39 weeks she came for her regular adjustment and that same night she had a healthy baby girl delivered naturally under no anaesthesia as a water birth.

Canada is the world’s second largest country and a fabulous holiday destination, says Tanya Farrer of Thame’s Spear Travels.

ew places on earth are quite as diverse as Canada. Seaboards dotted with fishing villages, soaring cliffs, lighthouses that spear the sky.

Prairies that lead you to vast mountain ranges, their sides scoured by ancient glaciers. Dark, deep forests that enclose glistening, jade-green lakes. Pristine coastlines that are both lapped by Arctic waters and the warm swells of the Pacific ocean. Tundra, white-water rivers, rocky ravines, lush, verdant valleys, kilometre upon kilometre of wilderness. Steepling trees, foraging and fishing bears, grazing moose and, in the distance, the howl of a wolf. For the truly adventurous, you can kayak the bays of Nova Scotia where pods of whales come to breach, learn the skills of the ranching cowboys in Alberta, go Grizzly spotting along the banks of

the Yukon, gaze mesmerised at the sight of massively, newly calved icebergs as they float cathedral-like serenely down the Newfoundland coast, or stare in even greater wonder at the Northern Lights as they dance and flare over a snow and ice quilted landscape.

Yet for all its wildness, Canada is also home to vibrant, multicultural cities that brim with great restaurants, museums and galleries. Toronto with its pattern of charming urban villages and lakeside front, museum-rich Ottawa, Montreal with its skyscrapers hedging in French heritage cobbled streets, mellow Vancouver, surrounded by beaches and mountains or Quebec City, north America’s oldest walled settlement, delightfully contained and an urban walker’s paradise.

Such is its size and variety, it would be impossible to explore the whole of Canada on holiday (unless you have decided to take a year or two off).

The best introduction might be to take a specific trip, perhaps Travel 2’s 14-day Rocky Mountain roundup.

After your arrival in Vancouver, you can enjoy a leisurely two-day tour of the city, taking in such landmarks as Stanley Park, English Bay and the Capilano Suspension Bridge. You’ll also be able to catch the ferry across the Strait of Georgia to Victoria. While there,you can visit Chemanius and its spectacular native murals and the totem pole grotto of Duncan.

Following the Campbell River, you next reach Port Hardy for a whale watching excursion and a fascinating

marine wildlife tour of the Johnstone Strait. Then you’ll set sail on a full-day cruise of the famous Inside Passage. Once disembarked at Prince Rupert and fully rested at your hotel, you set off along the scenic Yellowhead Highway as it wends its way along the Skeena River Valley.

After luxuriating at another top quality hotel, you resume your journey with the Yellowhead, heading through some of Canada’s most forested and rugged terrains, visiting Fort St James National Park to relive the days of the fur trade, before arriving at Prince George.

Suitably refreshed, the next day it’s on to Jasper National Park - with the chance to join a raft trip on the Athabasca River.

A stay at a fabulous lodge overnight, followed by a trip to the Banff National Parks - to witness its magnificent icefields

and one of the most photographed lakes in the whole of Canada. This is then followed by a stay in Banff itself.

From Banff you travel back to the west coast, passing through the Kicking Horse Canyon and over the heights of the Rogers Pass. The Okanagan Valley guides you into Vernon. From then on, including a couple of fine hotel stays, it’s a glorious return trip to Vancouver, before your flight home.

Canada, a country so vast it can fill a lifetime of experiences and holidays.

s a working mum you constantly juggle to maintain a sense of balance, giving time and dedication to your career as well as to your much loved family.

Often a sense of frustration comes with this choice as we have strict time limits on when we are able to work and now, and again, we are filled with feelings of guilt. When the children are little, you are told to make the most of your time at home as they grow up so fast; blink, and you’ll miss a treasured moment.

It is true to say that there is an over whelming feeling of push-pull. That fine line of what is more important... work or children? Wanting to have both without the need to have super-hero powers. That bounced around statement of ‘having it all’ seems to put a lot of pressure on mums. It defines that we should do everything, still be the primary carer, clean the house, be the perfect wife and still make time for our circle of friends.

There is no one-size-fits-all for motherhood, it is about being happy and finding fulfilment in your life.

Samantha Stonehouse talks to three fellow working mums on how they juggle work, life and bringing up their children. about what is right and wrong, so in the end you have to just trust your instincts.

Whenever I feel guilty I take a look at my daughter and see that she is a lovely, well rounded, funny little person and I realise that I’m not doing such a bad job!

What tips can you offer to other working mums who feel a little harassed at the moment?

Download a meditation app and take 15 minutes out of your day to ‘stop the noise of your mind’. It is like taking a power-nap and leaves me feeling positive.

After doing this I feel rejuvenated and ready to face life again. It’s hard to find 15 minutes, but, if you can, it will increase energy and positivity levels which then enhances coping and productivity levels.

Do you ever suffer from parental guilt?

Constantly, but guilt is a man-made emotion fuelled by worrying about what everyone else thinks about how one conducts one’s life. When, in fact, everyone is actually so busy with their own lives that if they do judge it’s fleetingly! Everyone has different ideas

What tips can you offer to other working mums who feel a little harassed at the moment?

Mainly that being harassed by anything isn’t worth it. Just think what is important in life. When I had my first child I had the most amazingly lovely health visitor, and one of the things she said to me will always stay with me. “Whatever choice you make, you have to be happy with it, because if you aren’t happy then your baby won’t be happy either.” I always think of this and apply it to any situation especially when faced with a difficult decision.

What wise words would you say to another working mum who is constantly juggling and endlessly looking for the perfect working balance?

Don’t judge yourself against anyone else and the decisions that they have made. Do what is right for you and don’t dwell on any errors of judgement that you may have made. Mistakes may be made, but take it as a valuable learning experience and move on.

What is your definition of success?

Having happy children. Finding the right balance of being a working Mum is always a hard balancing act to master and who is to say where success lies. If at the end of the day you are happy then I think you have achieved success.

My business is essentially a team of women with children; they come and go as they need to. We are all motivated to do well and grow the company. I am very supportive of their needs to not only to do a good job at work, but be available when needed for their families. Employees who need to padlock staff to their desks, and clock watch, should look to their recruiting policies because companies that can’t see past 9-5 are missing out on a wealth of motivated, dedicated and experienced women out there.

Has your approach to work and professional achievement changed since you’ve had children?

Children are a great way of throwing perspective at you. When you can work all the hours, you do, as there is nothing to stop you. But this way of working is not necessarily very productive. Now my time is restricted I am much more organised and focused, because all time spent working needs to achieve something, because otherwise why do it?

What has been the hardest thing for you work-wise since you have had children?

When my youngest was 18 months old I was waiting for a flight to Turkey, a week before Christmas, for a conference and I did not want to go, and couldn’t believe I was. Working full time for yourself is one thing, as all you are doing is for you and your family, working for someone else and having to do those things, very hard.

nna McDonald opened her first Bridal shop in Thame back in 2008. This is great news for Thame trade as Anna becomes the first independent retailer to offer two shops in this historic market town.

I think this diversity shows what we can achieve and keeps us on our toes”.

Sadly, many communities are losing their pubs and restaurants as they are sold off to developers and converted into houses or flats.

Thankfully, Paul Mitchell is on a mission to reverse the trend.

T

he Eight Bells in Long Crendon and The Black Boy in Oving are two pubs that were struggling. Both once loved, both well supported and both in the heart of thriving communities.

The Black Boy in Oving in particular hit some hard times. Over the last five years, the pub has had no fewer than four different owners. Now, however, it looks to be in safer hands.

New owner Paul, reopened the Black Boy in October. Good news for the local community because he is here to stay.

Paul has a strong business background and that, coupled with an abiding passion for eating out, looks all set to provide the pub and restaurant with a new lease of life. Taking on a struggling establishment and allowing the manager time and opportunity to develop a new sense of purpose and identity is Paul’s forte. You only have to

look at the transformation of the Eight Bells in Long Crendon. Paul turned around its fortunes in the face of stiff competition from a host of other pubs and restaurants, and now it is positively thriving.

The challenge presented by the Black Boy, though, was of another order.

It is the only pub in Oving, a place much smaller than Long Crendon. “It’s extremely important for a pub to be rooted in its community,” Paul says.

“And I want people to know that my establishments are pubs not restaurants, each serving quality food and drinks at affordable prices. Our aim is to listen to our customers and to provide them with the service they want. That’s how the Eight Bells evolved into the successful, relaxed, welcoming pub it is today, and that’s exactly the plan for the Black Boy - somewhere that’s a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.”

Paul appreciated the potential of the Black Boy the moment he set eyes on it. Nestled by the church in the heart of a picturesque village, the building itself dates from the late sixteenth century. With its ancient beams, tiled floor, huge garden and stunning views out over the Buckinghamshire countryside, the Black Boy is a freehouse which means Paul can work independently of the overbearing constraints of a relationship with a large brewery. “When it comes to drinks we can be more adventurous,” he explains. “We avoid the obvious. So customers will find a variety of drinks. We have lagers such as Czech Budvar and Korev. Tring and XT local ales, and Ashridge, a superb cider from Devon, along with Pickerings gins from Edinburgh and Daws Hill sparkling English wine.”

The food menu at both establishments is mouthwateringly seasonal and complemented deliciously by daily specials. Nothing is bought in.

Customers can come in for nibbles, sharing plates or a full dinning experience. Not forgetting those who simply come in for a drink.

Customer service is another important ingredient for Paul. “When I’m eating out or visiting a pub, I really do appreciate a smiling welcome at the table or behind the bar,” he continues. “Which is what awaits all our customers at the Black Boy and Eight Bells.”

Paul is in for the long haul. This sense of stability is reflected in the loyalty his staff show him. “The Head Chef (Chris Kirby) who oversees the kitchen teams at The Eight Bells and The Black Boy has been with me for two and a half years.

I think that sort of continuity is good for our customers,” Paul adds.

Because both the Black Boy and Eight Bells don’t benefit from passing trade means Paul and his team have to work that little bit harder to make sure that both establishments are serving excellent food at affordable prices that customers will travel to experience.

Both pubs are blessed with lovely gardens (fantastic for the coming spring and summer). But whatever the season, Paul wants his pubs to be as welcoming as possible which is why, seven days a week, they are both family- and dog-friendly.

Paul is very much a hands-on owner and divides his time equally between the Eight Bells and the Black Boy. Which means that two community pubs are well and truly serving their local communities. For good.

What’s the point in learning how to taste wine like a pro? Asks Jerome Harlington.

T

here’s no doubt that the rise of social media and super fast broadband has given us unprecedented access to information and ‘how to’ videos that just wouldn’t have been available even ten years ago. We can all perceivably become experts in anything we choose. You can guarantee there will be a ‘how to’ video on it.

But despite all the expert information in your chosen field that you have at your fingertips all of this is worthless if you don’t take the time to study it or implement your learning.

We’re all used to having instant access to any information we want - ‘just google it’ but unfortunately not only do we want the information instantly, we also want and even expect instant gratification. We want to become experts as fast as we are able to access the expert information. Of course this isn’t possible.

There does seem to be a ‘belief’ that you don’t need to learn anything about wine these days and that even without knowing anything ‘everyone is an expert’. There’s been a dumbing down of wine making with a trend towards grape juice fruit bombs that to me don’t taste of wine at all.

Real, craft wines fall outside of this fruit bomb category. These are wines that are made the way the wine maker wants to make them. They’re not dictated by corporate account managers with a spreadsheet. They make wines that reflect the place that they are made.

They have provenance, are produced in small batches and are made with minimum use of chemicals in the vineyard and winery. These wines are beautiful in their diversity and variety.

Unlike factory wine fruit bombs that are coca cola wines. Favoured because of their consistency from year to year.

They have no character.

But to really appreciate craft wines there is no shortcut for hard graft in learning how to taste them properly. But the rewards you get for putting in the effort are worth it.

If you want to get the maximum enjoyment out of your bottles of wine it’s worth learning how to assess and taste your wines like a professional. Of course if you’re only interested in the commodity wines, and there’s nothing wrong with that, then there’s no need to learn. Goodnight Mr Tom 22 – 26 March

The novel Goodnight Mister Tom is now a modern classic and is celebrating its 35th anniversary.

Michelle Magorian’s wonderfully uplifting tale is brought gloriously to life in this magical stage adaptation by David Wood. Set during the dangerous build up to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows young William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and forges a remarkable and heart-warming friendship with the elderly recluse, Tom Oakley.

Winner of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and commended for the Carnegie Medal, Goodnight Mister Tom is now a world-wide literary favourite and BAFTA award-winning TV film (starring John Thaw), and continues to inspire audiences and bring generations together.

David Troughton will play the central role of Mister Oakley joined by an ensemble cast featuring Clark Devlin, Elisa de Grey, Guy Lewis, Simon Markey, Abigail Matthews, Jane Milligan, Martha Seignior, James Staddon, Melle Stewart, Georgina Sutton and Hollie Taylor.

Six talented young performers have been cast in the key roles of William and Zach. Joe Reynolds, Freddy Hawkins and Alex Taylor-McDowall will alternate the role of William and Sonny Kirby, Harrison Noble and Oliver Loades will alternate as Zach.

David Troughton is currently playing the role of Tony Archer on BBC Radio 4’s long-running British contemporary rural drama, The Archers (since 2014). He has performed numerous times with both the RSC (The Shoemaker’s Holiday, Macbeth, Macbett, Henry IV: parts 1 and 2, Richard II and Richard III, The Cherry Orchard,

He is also a regular on TV where his appearances include Grantchester, Unforgotten, The Hollow Crown and many more.

Author Michelle Magorian was inspired to write Goodnight Mister Tom after hearing her mother’s tales about her time as a nurse in the war. Published in 1981, it has been translated into 11 languages and won awards in the UK, America and Australia.

The production is directed by Angus Jackson, whose work includes Oppenheimer for the RSC Swan and Vaudeville Theatre, and King Lear for Chichester and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

American Idiot 3 – 7 May

Footloose 18 – 23 April 911 and The Big Reunion star Lee Brennan will make his musical theatre debut when he joins the cast of Footloose: The Musical, playing the role of Willard at the New Theatre Oxford.

Lee is widely recognised as one third of multi-million selling pop group 911. One of the biggest pop acts of the 1990s, 911 were one of only five acts in the decade to achieve ten consecutive UK Top Ten Hit Singles, selling over 10 million records around the world and touring the UK four times.

The show also stars Maureen Nolan as Vi Moore. Maureen has been singing with her sisters since she was nine years old, when they became one of Europe’s first girl bands, The Nolans.

Luke Baker will play Ren McCormack, the role immortalised on screen by Kevin Bacon. Luke has just finished playing Theo in Green Day’s American Idiot in the West End, with other West End credits including the Olivier Award-winning

Sunny Afternoon, Beautiful Thing and I Can’t Sing.

Based on the 1984 screen sensation starring Kevin Bacon, Footloose: The Musical tells the story of city boy Ren, who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned.

All hell breaks out as Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet.

Featuring classic 80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear it for the Boy and the unforgettable title track, Footloose: The Musical is set to take the world by storm once again in this brand new production, bursting with youthful spirit, dazzling dance and electrifying music.

When the film was released in 1984, it became the highestgrossing February release in US film history. The soundtrack album ended the year-long reign of Michael Jackson’s Thriller at number one sold in excess of 17 million copies worldwide.

Green Day’s explosive, Tony Award® winning Broadway musical American Idiot, comes to The New Theatre in Oxford this May. Amelia Lily (X-Factor) will be reprising her critically acclaimed role, Whatsername, with full casting to be confirmed in due course.

Amelia Lily said: “I’m so excited to be a part of American Idiot on tour! It’s been an amazing experience playing Whatsername in the West End and now I get to do it all over again next year around the UK, bringing this incredible show to a wider audience who haven’t had a chance to see it in London!”

The musical features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer. The production is being directed and choreographed by Racky Plews, with musical supervision by Richard Morris, sound by Chris Whybrow, design by Sara Perks and lighting by Tim Deiling.

American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Winner of two Tony Awards® and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album, American Idiot premiered at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009, moving onto a critically acclaimed Broadway run in April 2010.

Its hit songs include “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the blockbuster title track “American Idiot” from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album.

Also included are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release “21st Century Breakdown,” and an unreleased love song, “When It’s Time.”
