Focus on a musical legend Robin Gibb CBE was a singer, songwriter and record producer, who gained worldwide fame as a member of the Bee Gees, with older brother Barry and fraternal twin brother Maurice. Robin Gibb also had his own successful solo career.

Robin Gibb was a much loved member of our community and lived in his family home, The Prebendal in Thame from 1984 until his death on 20th May 2012. He is buried in St. Mary’s Churchyard opposite.

In partnership with his widow Dwina Gibb, Thame Museum is proud to commemorate the 10th anniversary of his death with an exhibition of photographs, (many from Dwina’s own personal archive and not seen before in public), and memorabilia belonging to this icon of 20th Century music. Quite a story The Story Museum in Oxford has been selected as one of the five finalists for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2022, the world’s largest museum prize.

Helping hands Local charity seeks volunteers for busy summer holidays Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity are seeking temporary volunteers to help in their shops across Buckinghamshire over the busy summer holiday period.

“With summer fast approaching, we are on the lookout for short-term ‘Summer Temp’ volunteers to help us run our shops during the busy summer period. Volunteering is a fantastic way to get out and meet new people as well as learn new skills. By giving your time in a Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity shop, you are doing something very special for someone else,” says Lily Caswell, Head of Retail at the Charity.

Bedding down for the Summer Waddesdon’s gardens are an exceptional example of Victorian horticulture, and over the summer months, the formal bedding displays at the Parterre and the Aviary will be looking their best.

For summer 2022, the ornamental beds will be based on rare early colour autochromes from c.1910, unearthed as part of a new property-wide exhibition celebrating the life, gardens and legacy of Waddesdon’s Alice de Rothschild (1847–1922). The schemes will include intricate carpet bedding designs and 3D bedding sculpture pioneered by ‘Miss Alice’ herself—neither of which have been seen at Waddesdon since the pandemic.

This year, Waddesdon’s carpet beds will celebrate Alice de Rothschild and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with two complex living mosaic designs made up of thousands of tiny plants. In a fitting nod to Alice’s vision for the gardens, a colourful mixture of Victorian bedding plants will then be the primary focus of the geometric beds on the Parterre.

Scrolling ribbons of Geraniums, Bidens and Verbenas will take centre stage in an array of pinks, purples and yellows and will be framed by a more permanent display of ornamental roses in delicate peach tones.

Visitors will also spot Waddesdon’s 3D pheasant bedding sculpture near the Aviary for the first time since 2019.

Inspired by Alice’s autochromes, the

formal beds in the Aviary Gardens will then feature a colourful mix of flowers such as Begonias, Nemesia and Calibrachoa, as well as tropical Victorian foliage plants that brilliantly complement the bright, bold and exotic birds looked after by Waddesdon’s aviculturists.

My employer is insisting we all return to the office full time now following a period of home working during the pandemic. Working from home and avoiding a lengthy commute has given me a much better work life balance. Can I insist on being able to continue working from home either full time, or certain days of the week?

If you have been working for your employer for at least 26 weeks you have a statutory right to make a request for flexible working. This can include a request to work from home either full time or at certain times. Such requests are not just limited to changes in your working hours.

Whether or not the request will be granted will depend on the business you work for and whether it can be accommodated. Any refusal can only be based on one or more of eight

permissible grounds including, for example, if it would cause a detrimental impact in relation to either quality, performance or the business’ ability to meet customer demand.

When making a statutory request you need to put it in writing, ensuring it is dated and explain the following to your employer: l That you are making a statutory flexible working request; l Identify the changes you are seeking and the date you would like them to start;

l Explain what effect, if any, you

think those changes will have on your employer and how they may be addressed to allow your request to be accommodated. l Identify if you have made a previous statutory request in the last 12 months and, if so, when.

We also recommend that you include as much information as you are able as to the reasons behind the request, as well as any benefits for the business you envisage, if granted.

Once made your employer will have 12 weeks to consider your request, including any appeal process. Only one formal request can be made in any 12-month period.

For those unable to make a formal request, you could still ask for flexible working outside the statutory process.

Your employer will have greater scope to refuse without giving a reason.

They should not, however, unlawfully discriminate against you because of a protected characteristic (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnerships, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity).

I

have to be honest – I’m not a fan of cold water. I’ve done plenty of open water swimming, for triathlon and simply for the joy of swimming in the sea or a lake, when the weather’s warm. But when the water temperature dips below around 16 degrees Celsius, you’ll find me back in an indoor pool.

When I was regularly taking part in triathlons, the rules for open water swimming were that a water temperature of less than 11 degrees meant no swim – hurrah! For temperatures of 11 to 18 degrees, wetsuits were compulsory; and over 22 degrees and you weren’t allowed to wear a wetsuit due to the risk of overheating. There was a vague ‘optional wetsuit’ temperature range of around 18 to 21 degrees. Don’t quote me on any of this as it’s probably not entirely accurate and has no doubt been updated, but it gives you the general idea. This also suited me, as I very rarely leave my wetsuit behind when swimming outside in the UK. However, let’s leave my personal preferences behind as since I first dipped a toe into a lake there’s been a massive increase in the popularity of open water swimming, not least in cold water without a wetsuit, even in the winter, due to its health benefits.

Swimming as a form of exercise has proven health benefits including an all-body, non-weight bearing workout, improved cardiovascular fitness and the mood boost you get from endorphins produced by exercise. Add cold water swimming to the mix, and you’ve got many more benefits, including: l A natural high – cold water swimming activates endorphins. The brain produces endorphins to make us feel good during exercise, and exercise has been proven to help with depression. Endorphins are also released when we’re in pain to help us cope, and as cold water swimming brings us close to our pain barrier due to the shock of the temperature, even more endorphins are released. Cold water swimmers describe feeling ‘invincible’ when they finish a swim. l Jump starting your metabolism – the body’s ability to generate heat by

Take the plunge! increasing the metabolism is boosted at lower temperatures. So you burn more calories. l A boost to the immune system – there is mounting research that cold water swimming creates a stronger immune system by increasing its white blood cell count and number of antioxidants. l Reduced pain and inflammation - think ice packs to reduce swelling. I did sit in very cold baths for ten minutes after long runs (as shallow as I could make it) when I was marathon training many years ago, and I’m convinced it helped me stay injury-free.

Even if I was cold and hated every second of it. l Ecotherapy – swimming outside gives you the benefits of escaping the stresses of everyday life by being at one with nature and can offer up some idyllic landscapes that you won’t find in your local sports centre. l Sense of community and camaraderie – there are many organised groups appearing around the country, offering mutual support that goes well beyond just swimming. I was recently invited to join the local sea swimming club when down in Dorset, the Lyme Regis Bluetits. This social swim community spans the globe and is a network of Facebook groups. The swims are informal meet-ups by people in the groups who have connected through a love of cold water. However I’ve no idea how they got their name! l Self-confidence and self-acceptance.

There’s nothing like seeing people of all ages, shapes and sizes in swimwear to make you feel totally normal. l Increased libido – a dip in cold water increases levels of oestrogen and testosterone, adding an edge to libido (ah ok so that’s where I’m going wrong).

There are of course, some words of caution before you throw yourself into the nearest icy pond.

Do: l Acclimatise – the summer months are a good time to start, for obvious reasons. l Wear the right kit – neoprene gloves and boots, and a swimming hat or two to preserve body heat. However, you might never be allowed back if you don a wetsuit.

Focus on your breathing – in cold water, your breathing may become faster and more shallow, so take some advice on how to be relaxed and calm with your breathing. l Take medical advice before you take the plunge if you have a heart condition, asthma, high blood pressure or are pregnant. l Be safe – open water can be dangerous, so only swim where it is safe to do so, and where you can enter and exit the water easily. Never swim alone. l Spend the rest of the day feeling euphoric and invincible and ignore those around you who think you’ve lost the plot. l

Don’t: l Stay in too long to start with – a quick dip will still reap the benefits and you can increase how long you stay in as you get used to it. In winter, swimmers may only stay in for a couple of minutes. The general rule is that you can stay in for one minute for every degree of water temperature (I once did a race in water that was 11 degrees, the swim took 14 minutes…no wonder I was put off ). l Tempting though it is, don’t have a hot shower straightaway – hot water can cool your core too quickly and be dangerous, so instead put on plenty of warm layers on and have a hot drink.

Anyone over the age of 16 is generally welcome to join in on local swims, so take a look at your local area to see what’s going on. You don’t need to be an Olympic swimmer, or have a model swimsuit figure; just be open minded and up for a challenge and a laugh (oh and did I forget to say, having your breath taken away at the cold?). It might just be the best pastime you never knew.

Have you ever jumped in a swimming pool, only to surface with blocked ears?

e can generally live with a bit of wax in our ears, it’s natural and guards against infection.

However, when we go on holiday and start swimming, excessive ear wax can give us a problem.

Ear wax is predominately made of dead skin cells which are migrating out of the ear. As the skin is leaving the ear canal it mixes with oil from our sebaceous glands, and cerumen (a specialised type of sweat) from our ceruminous glands. The skin of the ear canal moves like a very slow conveyor belt, starting at the eardrum (where all new skin cells are made) and migrating out towards the outer ear. It can take up to four months for the skin to travel from the eardrum to the exit of the ear BUT it only takes a second with a cotton bud or a rolled-up bit of tissue to push it back in.

A small amount of earwax will leave our ears every day and we can generally find a little wax with our fingernail. The problems start if you go into the ear canal to clean it; the adage, ‘nothing smaller than your elbow’ is certainly true. If you try to clean the ear canal with something of the same diameter, you run the risk of pushing wax deep into the ear (see diagram). Ear wax is made only at the entrance of the ear and is there to offer protection against microbes, catch dust and dirt, waterproofing and helps aid the skin shedding process. It will only be found deeper in the ear if it has been pushed in by a cotton bud or something similar like earplugs or hearing aids. If you must wear something in your ears, we always

recommend a six month check up to make sure you are not impacting the wax.

You can see the ear canal in cross section. It is a very narrow tube which leads from the outer ear to the eardrum.

The eardrum seals off the outer ear from the middle ear and eustachian tube.

So, what happens when our ears get wet?

A lump of earwax will swell if it gets wet, leading to reduced hearing in that ear.

Depending on the cleanliness of the water in the pool or sea, you may also get an infection as the wax traps the water and microbes multiply. This can lead to pain and a search for a clinic to help remove the blockage and treat the infection.

What about earplugs?

When you have experienced an ear infection on holiday, you may be tempted to wear earplugs when you go into the water. This can compound the issue by pushing wax deeper into the ear. Repeated infections when on holiday are more likely when you have a blockage of ear wax. If there is no wax and you still experience infections, then a little olive oil spray with tea tree is a good waterproof barrier.

Preventing and treating outer ear infections Ear infections of the outer ear can happen at any time in our lives. A mild infection is generally not painful at all, and the only sign may be itchiness. We see a lot of teenagers in our clinic who wear small earbuds to listen to music.

These can prevent the natural selfcleaning process and if the music buds are not cleaned regularly, they can pick up fungal spores and bacterial cells.

If you have picked up an infection and you have been given a prescription spray, it is best to clear any excess wax from the ears before you use it. It is important that the medication can reach the entire ear canal and infected areas. If there is a build up of dead skin or wax at the entrance the medication cannot get into the ear.

Signs of an outer ear infection Difficulty hearing, discharge running out of the ear, a feeling of pressure or fullness, itching and irritation in and around the ear or scaly skin are all signs of possible infection.

eing so close to the border between Bucks and Oxon has many advantages. For art enthusiast and proprietor of fitch & fellows in the Buttermarket, Susannah Fellows, it leaves her spoilt for choice.

The month of May brings Oxford Art Weeks every year and many of the Oxfordshire based artists look to Susannah to showcase their work in her small but successful gallery space. This year she’s been home to regular fitch & fellows favourite Kate Wilkinson with her stylish jewellery work. “We decided to create an exhibition of work which would complement Kate’s simple, modern and classic designs. The show has been entitled Clean & Classic and features Justine Jenner’s simply decorated ceramics, Fleur Enser’s monochrome stoneware table pieces and Nicola Henshaw’s carved oak and lime furniture and boxes. Nichola’s work will soon become a well known

element of Thame life as a working group of Thame Town Councillors, members of the community and a SODC Arts Officer, chose her, from many submissions, to create a series of waymarkers as part of the Public Arts strategy brought about by the new housing developments. Her wonderful designs have been developed through a series of workshops which engaged people from all sections of our community - children and adults, people new to Thame and those who have lived here their whole life. These workshops created a story that weaves elements of Thame’s history into a magical and intriguing tale of adventure which is set in three locations, in three very different times. These additions to Thame have been carefully developed to be beautiful, practical and will help to celebrate Thame’s heritage and history. Come and see her work before the markers are unveiled!

Style your garden to sell in six easy steps.

hat does your garden mean to you? For us, it can be summarised in three simple words: entertainment, enjoyment and peace. With it being such a pleasurable, versatile space, it’s no wonder several studies show that it’s within the top three priorities for a potential buyer. Surrounding your house at both front and back, it’s a large area that requires just as much pre-viewing preparation as any room inside – and that’s where we’re here to help!

Tidying the garden is one thing, but styling it is another – it’s the finishing touches you add to the space with considered layouts and accessories that will take it to the next level. So, after you’ve trimmed the hedges and pressure-washed the patio, the fun can truly begin!

By bringing a flourish of style to the garden, you’ll be surpassing the viewer’s expectations, showing them the true potential of the space.

Read on for six tested tips that will finesse your garden with a dose of charming style.

GET IN THE ZONE Before you start accessorising the back garden, we suggest dividing it into different areas that are suited for particular purposes. Not only will this make your space feel bigger, but it will also be more organised, allowing you to show the garden in its best light.

A few cleverly positioned dining and seating areas will help to subtly delineate your garden and enable potential buyers to envisage themselves in the space. Define the centre of the main entertainment area with a weatherproof rug, and use comfy furniture to outline the borders. For a balance of cosy and sophisticated style, use a glass-topped table and cushioned dining chairs made from naturallooking materials such as all-weather wicker or Lloyd Loom.

If space allows, channel relaxation in another corner of the garden with an outdoor sofa or swing chair and a timber coffee table. To complete the snug look and feel, add a gas or electric heater.

FRAME THE FRONT DOOR The first area viewers will see when they arrive is the front door, so it’s worth thinking about the inviting impression you want to create. After refreshing old letterboxes, handles and knockers, consider defining a pathway to the door with flanks of flower beds or potted plants interspersed with post lights.

When it comes to the doorway or porch, draw the eye by framing it with hanging baskets and climbing plants.

Alternatively, use candle-filled lanterns of varying sizes either side of the door – mix these in groups of three for visual appeal LIGHT THE WAY Come rain or shine, illuminating your outdoor space with thoughtfully chosen lighting that looks just as good in the daytime as it does at night will add warmth and style.

Consider the theme of your interior, and expand this into the garden. A set of bronze- and copper-toned fixtures will give an aged, antique look that’s in keeping with period houses and cottages, whereas matt black and silvered patinas will coordinate with the contemporary feel of a modern home.

If you have a decking area, consider installing recessed floor lighting – for house viewings during darker months, this it will add an uplifting glow to the space. Alternatively, intertwine streams of festoon lights around an awning, hang them along the eaves of a shed or car port, or wrap them around a tree or two to enhance the relaxed atmosphere.

PLAY WITH MIRRORS An outdoor mirror or two is ideal for bouncing light around the garden and, if you position them in a clever way, they can also make the space feel bigger. When placing a mirror outside, consider what you want it to reflect. Fixing it against a fence or wall to reflect flowers and foliage is much preferable to a view of trailing drainpipes!

Think about the shape and size of the mirror, too. Going large will have the most impact, so when it comes to oversized mirrors, add one to your seating area to bounce light and reflect your table styling skills. Whether your garden style errs on the classic or modern side, a Crittall window mirror will suit the space. Give an arch-shaped one pride of place in an elegant countryside garden, or use a straightframed square version in a more contemporary area.

LIFT THE SPACE WITH COLOUR When it comes to nature, feel free to play around with colour to make your garden feel cheerful and inviting. For easy decorating, bring in container plants – they work especially well on a paved area or courtyard space where colour might be lacking. And if the flowers aren’t in bloom yet, then you can still add bright hues in the form of plant pots and baskets grouped together in coordinating colours.

For quaint, older houses, a fast-growing climber such as wisteria or clematis set against a wall or fence will give your space a real ‘wow’ factor. Or for a modern home, use trailing plants housed in hanging baskets to create a living wall of foliage for a more minimal approach. Wooden or galvanised metal step ladders are also a creative way to make a fun floral display.

If you have any bare patches among your flower beds, then now is the time to fill them. Bring in a selection of easyto-maintain perennials that look good all year round such as hellebore, libertia, liriope muscari and cranesbill.

KEEP IT LOW-KEY Remember, you don’t need to go OTT with styling or make it appear high maintenance. Keep it depersonalised by opting for furnishings that highlight texture over pattern and, unless it’s in the form of flowers or plants, accessorise with calm, neutral colours so you don’t overwhelm the space.

Some summer wine tips from Jerome Harlington.

The future’s bright, the future’s orange.

S

ummer is finally upon us and we’ll hopefully be enjoying some lovely sunny summer days ahead.

Now is the time to chill down some delicious white wines and I have some excellent suggestions for you to enjoy.

I’m actually thinking of white wines for those of you that would usually only drink red wines.

When I ask people why they only drink red wine they often say that the main reason is that they often find white wines a bit fruity sometimes, a bit too sweet and that what they enjoy about the red wines is the savoury complexity and dryness.

So I thought I’d recommend some white wines that share those characteristics.

There are six styles of white wine that I think would be a really good starting point if you currently only enjoy red wines.

These white wines are not the kind of fruit bombs that you might be used to when you’ve tried white wines before.

These are much more savoury in style.

Some of them are produced in the same way that red wines are.

The first wine I would recommend if you haven’t tried it is a white Rioja. White Rioja is a herbaceous style of wine. It does have some character, lemon and citrus notes, but it also shows thyme and savoury herbs. It’s a delicious wine

with a bit of structure that would be very good to try if you only like red wines.

The next wine I’d recommend you try if you only like red wines but would like to try white wines is a wine you probably haven’t heard of called Ribolla Gialla. This wine comes from North East Italy and the wine is extremely complex offering floral notes but is not overly fruity. The wine shows tangerine and apricot notes but also floral and herbaceous notes. It’s a really interesting style to try.

I would also recommend re-visiting Chardonnay. Go for a Chardonnay that has had a little bit of oak ageing.

Chardonnay with oak ageing often has been fermented in whole bunches including the grape skins and this is the same method used in red wine production. With this method you get a lot more complexity and savoury notes.

You get a slightly heavier style of wine and I think this would be very appealing if you’re starting out trying whites when you’re used to only drinking reds.

The next style that I would recommend is a Semillon Sauvignon.

Again, this is more herbaceous in style.

You can find some great examples in South West France.

I’m showing my age by the title of this summer’s article BUT, another style that I think is very exciting is Orange wines.

Orange wines have started to come back in style. It’s an ancient method of

producing white wine and we’re seeing a comeback in Eastern Europe, especially Slovenia and also North East Italy.

Orange wines are white wines fermented in whole bunches with the grape skins so you get a lot more complexity as you do with red wine. More savoury notes and less fruity in style, you do get some fruit but these wines are very close to red wine in wine making style so these are good wines to try if you only like reds.

Perfect to be chilled down in summer.

The final wine I would recommend is a Marsanne Roussanne blend which again is herbaceous in style. This is delicious chilled but not the sort of fruit bombs that you would expect if you don’t like white wine and you’ve experienced that when you’ve tried white wine.

I’ve put together a recommended selection on each of these styles that you can purchase and give them a go; experiment to see if you can start to enjoy white wines in the summer months if you’ve only liked red wines in the past.

Playing at The Oxford Playhouse The hilarious Sarah Millican is back on tour with a Bobby Dazzler of a new standup show. In this, her sixth international tour, you’ll learn about what happens when your mouth seals shut, how to throw poo over a wall, trying to lose weight but only losing the tip of your finger, a surprisingly funny smear test, and how truly awful a floatation tank can actually be.

THE PLAY WHAT I WROTE 13 – 18 JUNE Thom has written a play, an epic set in the French Revolution called A Tight Squeeze for the Scarlet Pimple. Dennis, on the other hand, wants to continue with their double act. He believes that if they perform a tribute to Morecambe and Wise, Thom’s confidence will be restored and the double act will go on. But first Dennis needs to persuade a guest star to appear in the play what Thom wrote.

With a mystery guest star at every performance, this “recklessly, tear-inducingly funny show” (The Guardian) is “a loving celebration of comic genius which is itself touched with comic genius” (Daily Telegraph).
