Running from the 23rd to the 26th June, Handmade Oxford is a Contemporary Crafts Festival. A celebration of creativity and more.

Founded in 2007 to champion and support the independent and outstanding design and artistic talent that exists all over the British Isles, Handmade in Britain is back in a ‘live’ format. A dedicated online marketplace was established in 2019 which came into its own during the Covid lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 when Handmade in Britain seamlessly introduced “Virtual Fairs” for its makers and customers alike. Now, organisers are thrilled to bring the Festival to the people at Waterperry Gardens. The Festival offers something for everyone. You can engage in a packed programme of fun workshops. These include Modern Calligraphy, Ceramic Painting, Linocut Workshop, Nettle Fibre, Ink With More Than A Hint Of Watercolour and Can’t Draw, Won’t Draw. Discover new techniques with live craft demonstrations including printmaking, jewellery, and more. Artists will be onhand showing you in-person techniques within their craft discipline and sharing their insightful expertise. The Festival features talks such as Craft In Conflict with Craftswomen of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka. From Field To Fabric, featuring demonstrations on processing methods of flax, methods used to extract the fibre and assemble it for spinning for weaving as well as understanding sustainable cultivation. Learn more about growing flax and the fascinating journey it takes to become linen. Native British Sheep. With a modern focus on native sheep breeds, in this engaging talk you will come away understanding what has happened to sheep in the past. With swatches to hand, you will also have a chance to get up close and personal with diverse sheep breeds.

Plus of course, the Festival offers you the chance to browse and shop for unique handmade gifts. In addition to all this, you will find delicious artisan food and drinks with a chance to try and test treats before purchase. A one-stop boutique craft spirits shop, Artisan Drinks is proud to provide gin, rum, mezcal, scotch whisky, English wine, and craft beer from a range of providers. With a focus on plant-based food, their innovative menus are a must. Highland Boundry brings us a new generation of spirits capturing flavours of the Scottish wilderness. Combining botanicals from the Highlands with grain spirit from the South, a selection of light, refreshing drinks will be available. Artisan bakery, Hush Hush Chefs prepare and cook delicious recipes on a daily basis. Priding themselves on using only the finest and freshest ingredients, all products are handmade. Scandilicious. From its inception in 2007, Handmade in Britain has stayed true to its original goal of promoting the finest design and craft practitioners in the UK, through fairs, events and pop-ups. Twenty-six shows over fourteen years have been held in London, Oxford and Edinburgh – and with venues as varied as RBG, Kew Gardens, Waterperry Gardens and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh – have secured its reputation. The last two years have seen Handmade in Britain recognised by the Arts Council as part of the Covid Cultural Recovery Fund and lauded as winners in the Creative Cities Challenge. Handmade in Britain is the brainchild of Piyush Suri. With over 20 years of experience working in the craft and design sector in the UK, India and Europe, Piyush has a Masters Degree in textile design from the University of Arts, London. He also has experience running his own textiles brand and retail store for 8 years in London. Piyush has appeared as a judge in BBC2 TV series – Paul Martin’s Handmade Revolution (Oct 2012) and Channel 4 series Kirstie’s new celebrity craft masters (July 2019).
