t was great to get back to winning ways on Tuesday evening against an in-form – and very strong – Oxford team, but it’s hard to fathom how that performance can follow on just a week later from what we saw at Bristol Rovers. All in all, we still find ourselves in a great position in the table. Nothing has been achieved yet, though, and only a consistent run of results will get us to where we ultimately want to be.

It’s encouraging to see Kenny continue his road to recovery and be able to attend the past two matches, but I know he’s looking forward to being back in the technical area. POMPEY v GILLINGHAM

ompey were searching for a P reaction on Tuesday night – and that is exactly what they got at the Kassam Stadium.

Harvey White’s maiden goal for the club – on his first start – saw Oxford suffer just a second League One defeat of 2021.

It meant that the Blues were able to consolidate fourth spot in the standings, while also closing the gap on the automatic promotion places.

Steve Evans’ visitors are down in 15th position, although only nine points adrift of the play-offs with more than a third of their fixtures remaining.

But the manager did not take kindly to a narrow midweek loss at struggling AFC Wimbledon, which came courtesy of Jack Rudoni’s stunning late strike.

It led him to write off any lingering promotion hopes and instead aim for a finish in the top half of the table.

But consistency is the name of the game for those sides aiming to be playing Championship football next term and so three more points has to be the aim this afternoon.

Evans also insisted that some of his squad were ‘not good enough’ and blamed a lack of focus for inconsistent results and performances.

Gillingham are the visitors to a Fratton Park that has not exactly been a fortress this term, with six sides already returning home with a maximum haul.

The Kent outfit are in their eighth successive campaign playing in English football’s third tier, having secured the League Two title in 2013.

That is the same number as home wins, so it is clear where an improvement has to be made if the top two are to be caught.

And the closest they have come to reaching the Championship since came in the 2015/16 season, with a placing of ninth.

The Gills have won six times on their league travels so far this term, enjoying success at Wigan (3-2), Crewe (1-0), Bristol Rovers (2-0), Rochdale (4-1), Accrington (1-0) and Charlton (3-2).

But they have only ever triumphed twice at Fratton Park, with those victories both arriving in the space of seven months in 2018.

It means that Pompey’s most recent home league win against today’s opponents came in their promotion-winning 2002/03 campaign.

But Kenny Jackett’s men did claim all three points when they visited Priestfield back in October, as goals from John Marquis and Michael Jacobs comfortably got the job done.

And a similar result would be most welcome this afternoon, as the Blues try to ensure that Peterborough and Lincoln are left looking nervously over their shoulders.

St Johnstone striker began his managerial career in the English non-league game.

He won promotions with Stamford, Boston and Crawley, leading the latter two clubs into the Football League.

Evans achieved more success during a three-and-a-half year stint in charge of Rotherham and later had spells at Leeds, Mansfield and Peterborough.

He spent around five months out of work after being dismissed by the latter, but was appointed Gillingham’s new boss in June 2019.

Utility player Knight featured in Gillingham’s 1973/74 Division Four promotion success. He was a boyhood supporter of the club and turned professional in January 1970, making his debut in a 2-0 defeat at Bristol Rovers 15 months later. Predominantly a midfielder, ‘Bootsie’ appeared in every position except between the sticks and was granted a testimonial match against Tottenham in May 1979. He netted 10 goals in 274 games before joining Maidstone in September 1979. Later reunited with Gills team-mate Brian Yeo at Canterbury, Knight had a spell as their manager and was a delivery driver for a local newspaper.

STEVE BRUCE England Youth central defender Bruce starred as the Gills reached the fourth round of the FA Cup in 1981/82 and 1983/84. Signing professional terms in October 1978, he struck 38 times in 237 outings prior to joining Norwich in August 1984. He was a key figure as they lifted the League Cup in portsmouthfc.co.uk

his first season, then secured the Division Two title in 1985/86, moving to Manchester United in December 1987. Amassing a vast collection of honours, Bruce signed for Birmingham in the summer of 1996, then was Sheffield United’s player/boss and has since managed Huddersfield, Wigan, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Sunderland, Hull, Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and now Newcastle.

MICKY ADAMS Former England Youth left-back Adams helped Gillingham reach the FA Cup fourth round in 1981/82. Turning professional in November 1979, he scored four goals in 104 appearances while at Priestfield before departing for Coventry in the summer of 1983.

He moved to Leeds in January 1987 and helped them reach the Division Two play-off final and FA Cup semi-finals that season.

Signing for Southampton in March 1989, Adams followed boss Ian Branfoot to Fulham in July 1994 and became player/manager, then took charge of Swansea, Brentford, Brighton (twice), Leicester, Coventry, Port Vale (twice), Sheffield United, Tranmere and Sligo.

PETER BEADLE Striker Beadle commanded a record transfer fee for the Gills.

The former Priestfield trainee made his debut in a 2-1 home defeat to Cardiff in March 1989 and turned professional 14 months later, hitting 15 goals in 76 matches before being sold to Tottenham for £350,000 in the summer of 1992. He joined Watford in September 1994, then moved to Bristol Rovers and was 11

leading marksman in 1996/97.

Later playing for Port Vale, Notts County, Bristol City – where he won the Football League Trophy at the Millennium Stadium – Brentford, Barnet and Team Bath, Beadle has since taken charge of Taunton, Newport County, Clevedon, Hereford and back at Barnet.

MATT JARVIS Winger Jarvis gained England international recognition after leaving Gillingham. A son of former table tennis internationals Nicky and Linda – who run supplies company Jarvis Sports – he was a scholar at Priestfield and made his debut against Sunderland six months before turning professional in May 2004. He netted 16 goals in 122 games prior to joining Wolves in July 2007 and starred in their 2008/09 Championship title triumph. Voted ‘Player of the Year’ in 2010/11, Jarvis moved to West Ham for £7.5 million in the summer of 2012. He signed for Norwich, initially on loan, in September 2015 and is now appearing for Woking. @Pompey

A KNIGHT’S TALE ALAN KNIGHT MADE 801 APPEARANCES FOR POMPEY AND IS NOW CLUB AMBASSADOR frightening thought A entered my head recently.

Next year, I will have been retired from football for the same length of time as I was playing it. It was April 1978 when I made my senior debut at Rotherham, while my final appearance came at Norwich in January 2000.

It would have been nice if both milestones had occurred at Fratton Park, rather than before a crowd of under 4,000 when we were already relegated or on a midweek in Norfolk a few days after the world had celebrated the dawn of a new millennium. It rather sums up my luck.

If I told you that the 22 years between those two matches had sped by, I would be lying.

It is a long time to dedicate

yourself to one art – and at just the one club – and there were a lot of personal and professional changes in that time. I was just 16 at the start of my career and 38 when it ended. Take a minute to recall everything that happened in your life during those points and you’ll get the idea. It is a sobering thought and the duration of my sobriety is a story for another day.

I recently watched an interview conducted for club media channels with our former player Gavin Maguire, who was forced to retire from professional football through injury at the age of just 26. I can count my blessings that, by the same age, I had featured in all four divisions and at grounds such as Highbury and Anfield. Okay, I had six and four goals respectively scored

past me at those locations, but I still felt lucky to be out there, let alone continue appearing until an age when most people in my position had already hung up their boots.

As I’ve mentioned before, the more years that pass, the harder it is to remember some of the key moments. There are times when I stop and think: “Did I really achieve all that?” I’m approaching my 60th birthday, hard of hearing and with all the aches and pains that are a natural part of growing older, so it’s hard to equate my former life with the current one.

Then people come up to you and discuss a save, a game or even a gaffe from at least two decades ago. For them, it might as well have happened yesterday.

ON THIS DAY FEBRUARY

27 1954 Pompey staged a fine second half recovery, with a Johnny Gordon (above) brace and Mike Barnard strike seeing them battle back from two goals down to secure a top-flight home win over Burnley.

1960 The Blues were left still searching for their first victory of the calendar year after being defeated 3-2 by fellow Division Two strugglers Derby at Fratton Park.

1965 A maiden league brace from Ray Hiron helped Pompey to a 2-1 second tier triumph at Coventry – their first away success for 12 months.

Funnily enough, Sky used to have an innovative tool that allowed you to watch a fixture with crowd noise, but no commentary.

I was reminded of this during Pompey’s EFL Trophy defeat at Peterborough, which I viewed on iFollow.

THE POMPEY HISTORY SOCIETY TAKE A DELVE INTO THE CLUB’S ARCHIVE, PULL OUT A DOCUMENT OR ARTEFACT AND TELL THE STORY BEHIND IT. IN THIS ISSUE, WE HAVE DISCOVERED A CLUB FAX FROM THE LATE 1990s, WHEN ELECTRONIC FACSIMILES WERE IN VOGUE… I remember the last one. It was about Guy Whittingham’s transfer to Aston Villa.

Correct. Glad to see you’ve been paying attention. This one is also about player sales, albeit of the more bargain basement variety.

By December 1998, Pompey were in desperate financial trouble. The owner was Martin Gregory, son of Jim, who had bought the club 10 years before.

Jim had sadly died in September after a long illness and Martin was left with the problem. In the summer of 1996, he had tried to engineer the passing on of the club to recently resigned England manager Terry Venables, but that idea had collapsed in mutual recrimination by January 1998.

I remember, so Martin Gregory was on the hook for the lossmaking club…

You don’t look old enough, but you are right. Alan Ball was, by now, manager again, having replaced the hapless Terry Fenwick and engineered the ‘Great Escape’ from relegation in May. However, things hadn’t improved financially and the club were in danger of entering administration. So, Martin had a brainwave.

I’m not sure that’s a positive…

Quite. To raise cash, he put the whole squad up for sale and appointed former Olympic swimmer and opera singer – I kid you not, that’s his background – Athole Still as the agent, cutting Ball out of the loop. This fax, on December 9, was circulated by the club to all Premiership,

Nationwide and Scottish League clubs, giving Still’s company authority for all ‘sales and purchasing of players’. That meant ‘sales’. At any price…

Weren’t we on TV just after?

Yes. On the Sunday, the Sky cameras were at Fratton for the home game with Grimsby. We lost 1-0, as we invariably did on TV back then, but more to the point, the players warmed up with t-shirts indicating their ‘value’. 50p here, £2.50 there – that sort of thing.

TACKLING LONELINESS TOGETHER

ompey in the Community (PitC) and Oxford P United in the Community (OUitC) are working in partnership to combat loneliness as part of the

On Tuesday, both PitC and OUitC joined together to host a Zoom call with Pompey and Oxford fans over the age of 65, so they could watch the match as one.

A recent study from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 2.6 million adults reported that they felt lonely ‘often’ or ‘always’, while 7.4 million adults reported their wellbeing had been affected through them having felt lonely in the past seven days.

Supporters were joined by Blues legend Alan Knight and United hero Paul Moody. They saw the action on iFollow, while at the same time sharing football stories and memories from over the years.

Therefore, both club community organisations have been awarded funding through the Department for Digital, Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and the English Football League Trust (EFLT) to explore ways to bring people together in

Charlie Bell opened the scoring with a free-kick to take his personal tally for the season into double figures. The hosts quickly levelled, but Harrison Brook cut inside from the left and fired the Blues back into the lead before the break. And the points were secured in the second half, as Harvey Rew converted a corner to ensure the side can take confidence into their forthcoming Merit League fixtures.

Professional development phase coach Liam Daish said: “We started with plenty of energy following a long trip to Wales, although perhaps recent games took it out of us towards the end. But the lads played really

VIEW FROM THE NORTH STAND oday I want to talk about the T Premier League – and how I love it again. In recent years, you’d have been hard-pressed to find a Blues fan whose heart was aching at their team’s absence from the top-flight. The general view has been that it was fun while it lasted, but became tiresome and we were well off out of it.

These days, most Pompey supporters are hankering after a return to the Championship, but a good proportion would be happy if our rise ended with a prolonged stay in the second tier. For many of us, that’s the division the club have lived in for much of our lifetimes; the one we belong in.

I must admit that’s still my feeling now and I do sense a growing disenchantment – among Blues fans and the wider football community – with the Premier League and all it represents. I was in that same camp for quite a few years, but from somewhere, my interest has been fired once more.

AS FOR MIDWEEK EDITIONS, THEY’RE ALMOST AS GOOD AS HAVING HARRY CARPENTER AND SPORTSNIGHT BACK

Perhaps it’s because, at times since last summer, it has seemed like the only football show in town. Perhaps it’s because it has become beautifully unpredictable compared to the days when you knew who’d be finishing in the top four.

‘Match of the Day’ was reignited by last spring’s ‘top 10’ series when Messrs Lineker, Wright and Shearer let their guard down somewhat and talked candidly about some of the league’s great players and memorable moments.

I tune into both MOTD and MOTD2 weekly and quite miss them in international breaks. As for midweek editions, they’re almost as good as having Harry Carpenter and Sportsnight back.

I love the cut and thrust of it, the ebb and flow of this season. And I’m saying that as someone who rarely sees any of it live on TV. I don’t have Sky Sports or BT Sport, so can only watch when games are on Amazon Prime (who do a terrific job with it) or the BBC.

I am VAR’s biggest critic and remain hopeful it will be dropped, but in the meantime I’m fascinated to see how those operating it tie themselves up in knots every week with the inconsistency of what they review and the decisions they make.

But you don’t need to watch the Prem live to enjoy it. There are the excellent Radio 5 Live commentaries, while my love for

My latest Premier League obsession and conviction is that Fulham are going to get out of the bottom three by the end of the season and someone currently sitting between 10th and 17th will go down, having previously had their feet up while smoking cigars. Who will it be? I genuinely couldn’t tell you.

I sympathise with the view there is way too much money at the top level of our game – there is; that cannot be argued against. But for now at least, that’s not stopping me enjoying the soap opera. Do I want to see Pompey back there one day? Eventually, yes. But for now I’d be quite happy for the Blues to be in the neighbouring Little Top, while I occasionally poke my head through a flap in the Big Top and see which crazy act is on next.
