By giving this command the air traffic controller is confirming that the aircraft may take off and airline pilots know they may start their flight and take the passengers to their different destinations. One of these airplanes might very well be InselAir’s MD80 or Bandeirante aircraft.

Every time one of InselAir’s aircraft takes off from an airfield, workers of several departments of InselAir have made it possible for the aircraft and the crew to make a safe, economic and regular flight. One of these departments is the maintenance department located in the hangar on the airport in Curacao. Their task it is to make sure that every airplane is properly maintained and checked according to the very high standards set by InselAir’s board of directors and by national and international organizations. InselAir’s maintenance department consists of highly educated, skilled and trained people who’s responsibility it is to keep the aircraft’s operation safe. This department, together with the different other departments in InselAir made it possible that InselAir is FAA approved, appears on the white list of Dutch airline companies and the Dutch Civil Aviation Authority and soon as an airline that complies with the IOSA standards. (IATA Operational Safety Audit.) Complying with all the checks, from the smallest to the biggest, while constantly making sure that no item on the checklists is being missed, these people of the maintenance department realize that they have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. The responsibility to keep up with the promise of the airline to transport the passengers safely to their destination. Therefore no sacrifice is too much in order to achieve this promise. Good maintenance combined with good communication with the cockpit, cabin crew and other departments, also is of great importance for InselAir to maintain a good on time performance. InselAir has an on time performance of above 87 %. So whenever the air traffic controller gives the command to our pilots that they are cleared for take off, you may rest assured that the aircraft was already cleared for a safe and problem free flight. Because some time, some hours before, our people from InselAir’s maintenance department have given the pilots that important clearance.

Cada despegue de una aeronave de InselAir de la aeropista es resultado de la colaboración entre el personal de varios departamentos de InselAir, logrando una vez más que la nave y su tripulación puedan efectuar un vuelo seguro, económico y regular. Uno de estos es el departamento de mantenimiento, ubicado en el hangar del aeropuerto de Curazao. Su tarea es de ver que cada avión reciba servicios de mantenimiento e inspección adecuados según las altísimas normas establecidas por la junta directiva de InselAir y organizaciones nacionales e internacionales. El departamento de mantenimiento de InselAir está formado por gente altamente educada, preparada y capacitada, cuya responsabilidad es ver que las naves se operen de forma segura. Es gracias a este y otros departamentos de InselAir que se le concediera la aprobación de la FAA, aparezca en la lista blanca de aerolíneas holandesas y la Autoridad de Aviación Civil Holandesa y que, dentro de poco, también reciba la certificación IOSA (Auditoría de Seguridad Operacional de IATA). El personal del departamento de mantenimiento se percata bien de la gran responsabilidad que yace en sus manos y llevan a cabo cada control de seguridad, hasta el más mínimo, cerciorándose siempre de no omitir detalle alguno, pues son conscientes de la responsabilidad de cumplir con la promesa hecha por la aerolínea, de llevar a los pasajeros a sus destinos de forma segura. No hay sacrificio demasiado grande con tal de cumplir con tal promesa. El buen mantenimiento, así como una buena comunicación con la cabina, el personal de cabina y otros departamentos, son esenciales también para que InselAir mantenga un buen índice de puntualidad, y el alcanzado por InselAir supera el 87 %. Por eso, cada vez que el controlador de tránsito aéreo dé a nuestros pilotos la orden de despegue, podrá estar usted seguro de que también la nave ya ha recibido su visto bueno y está lista para un vuelo seguro y sin dificultades, pues se dio desde horas antes, por parte del personal del departamento de mantenimiento de InselAir.

n this edition of Insights we focus on the beautiful land of Suriname, one of the many destinations of InselAir. Suriname is still for a lot of people an unknown destination, but as you can read in this edition, it’s really worth the travel. When you land on Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport and travel through the beautiful country, you sometimes will ask yourself the question: is it Caribbean or is it Latin-American? It’s a question that even the people of Suriname often ask themselves about their own country. Surrounded by Brazil (south), French-Guyana (east), British-Guyana (west) and the Atlantic Ocean, Suriname lies geographically in South-America, but in fact also on the border of the Caribbean. This makes it a place where different cultures meet. Tourism in Suriname is still in a developing stage, and so the country is not (yet) walked over by visitors. But those who have been in Surinam are excited. And quite rightly: more than 85 percent of the country is covered by untouched rainforest, the wildlife you’ll find is beyond imagination, and the mixture of ethnic and religious cultures is impressive. Suriname is a country for explorers, for adventurous people who want to experience a society and a nature you normally can’t imagine it exists. With a kindness of the inhabitants, you didn’t realize that people somewhere in the world could be so friendly. As a former Dutch colony it also has a rich history that no country in South-America or the Caribbean can look back on. Armand Snijders

n esta edición de Insights, nos centramos en el hermoso país de Surinam, una de las muchas destinaciones de InselAir. Para muchos, Surinam sigue incógnita como destinación, pero como puede leer en esta edición, vale la pena visitarlo. Al aterrizar en el Aeropuerto Internacional Johan Adolf Pengel y al atravesando este precioso país, uno a veces se pregunta, ¿es caribeño o latinoamericano? Esa pregunta se la hacen con frecuencia aun los propios surinameses con respecto a su país. Rodeado por Brasil (al sur), la Guayana Francesa (al este), la Guayana Británica (al oeste) y el Océano Atlántico, Surinam pertenece, geográficamente hablando, a Suramérica, pero también yace en la frontera de la región Caribe. A eso se debe que sea un punto de encuentro de diferentes culturas. El turismo en Surinam todavía está en fase de desarrollo, por lo que el país (hasta ahora) no está invadido por visitantes. Pero los que visitan Surinam vuelven muy entusiasmados, y con buen motivo: más del 85 por ciento del territorio está cubierto por selva virgen, la fauna que se puede observar reta la imaginación y la mezcla de culturas étnicas y religiosas es simplemente impresionante.

With a fascinating culture and the beautiful tropical wilderness and rare wildlife of the untamed jungle, it is a must for everyone with a little bit of adventurous blood. Experience a warm, dense convergence of rivers that thumps with the unique rhythm of ethnic diversity. Suriname, the self-proclaimed ‘beating heart of the Amazon’, gives you the unexpected!
Suriname, beating heart of the Amazon
The adventure for most visitors starts at the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport, 50 kilometers south of the capital, Paramaribo. The one hour ride to the city will give you the first glimpse of what Suriname has to offer. It’s an overwhelming first touch, with green, green and more green; more than 85 percent of the country is covered by rainforest, making it the most afforested state in the entire world. Normally the real vacation starts with a few days stay in Paramaribo, where more than half of the almost 500.000 inhabitants of Suriname live. Paramaribo was founded in the beginning of the 17th century by English settlers. To protect the village, they built Fort Willoughby, named after one of the first colonists. Years later, after the Dutch conquered the colony, Paramaribo grew fast. Fort Willoughby was renamed to Fort Zeelandia and is nowadays still one of the mayor attractions in the centre of the city, that includes an interesting museum. Fort Zeelandia has a controversial history, with the killings in December 1982 of fifteen opponents of the military regime of that time inside the walls, as one of the low-points.

Fort Zeelandia is the perfect starting point for a walk through historic Paramaribo. Visit the presidential palace at the nearby Onafhankelijkheidsplein (Independence square); see the old, partly wooden, buildings, a reminder of the colonial past of the country that became independent from Holland in 1975. And don’t forget to go to the Central Market, in the heart of the centre: a lively ants-nest, where you can find local food, clothing and much more.

Diversity in the kitchen
El Mercado Central. As diverse as the ethnic mixture of the population is, so diverse is the kitchen of Suriname, including Indian, Indonesian, Chinese, Creole, European and, with the coming of major fastfood-restaurants, American dishes. Some are open day and night. Eating outdoors is in generally very cheap. Usually you can have a good meal for approximately five US dollars. In the more fancy restaurants you pay 20-50 US dollars. The capitol Paramaribo is full of restaurants, but also in Nieuw Nickerie, the second largest city, you will find almost too much to choose from. In every other small village or community there is at least a Chinese restaurant and an Indian or Javanese (warung) establishment.
Above all, during your walk be surprised by the mix of cultures you’ll meet: Amerindians and descendants from African slaves. They live peaceful together with immigrants from India and Java, Indonesia. Newcomers as the Chinese and people from neighboring Brazil are accepted as well. Muslims, Hindus and Christians are melted in one homogeneous society, living next to

Moksi alesi (rice with different types of meat) is the specialty of the Creole kitchen, for saoto (a well-filled soap with a boiled egg) you visit the warung. Hundreds of restaurants all over the country offer common and worldwide known Chinese food. If you have tasted the different meals of Suriname, you have tasted large parts of what the global kitchens have to offer. But above all: a meeting of culinary traditions means the food here is as spicy and lush as the country itself.

each other. Surinamese are proud to tell you that in the centre of the city, a synagogue and a mosque are standing harmonious standing side by side. Suriname teaches a lesson that in the eyes of the locals still must be learned in many other parts of the world. Tired and hungry after your walk? Sit down and relax at the Waterkant (Waterfront), near Fort Zeelandia, where several food-stands offer a good meal day and night. Or try the djogo, the one liter-bottle of local-brewed Parbo-beer. For most people the real reason to visit Suriname is the interior. The jungle the way you imagine it, is here in the visitors range.

Most tourists go to Maroon or Indian villages near the rivers Marowijne and Boven-Suriname, in the largest of the ten districts, Sipaliwini. In the last decennia dozens of resorts were developed here to guarantee the visitor a good time. Between skyscraper-high trees you can hear and see a variety of wildlife, from apes to pingos (forest-pigs), exotic birds to the shy cayman (small alligator).
Getting around There are many ways to travel around. The most adventurous and cheapest way is to go on your own, using public transport. Take the bus to the district Brokopondo (south) or to the border-village Albina in the east, jump (after a little negotiation to fix the price) into a korjaal (wooden boat) and let yourself float to one of the hundreds of villages on the magic rivers in the Amazon. Most settlements offer places to stay for tourists. It’s best that before leaving you inform yourself about the different possibilities. And that you take your time, at least four days. But there are also many tour-operators that offer well-organized trips, from one to eight days by plane and/or boat. Be aware that, especially when traveling with small tour-operators to the interior, quality and service not always meet with the high western standards. In recent years, the possibility of discovering Suriname by boat has increased significant. From basic tours of a few hours, to visiting old plantations near Paramaribo, or to see dolphins near the Atlantic Ocean, to complete trips for one or more days to the interior. Mi Gudu Tours offers a very luxurious five day trip by boat through the interior from Paramaribo to Nickerie, in the west of the country. It is one of the more expensive options,, but for tourists who prefer comfort and can afford it, it is an unforgettable experience

Don’t forget your fishing gear. The rivers are full of the rarest fishes, including piranhas (which are very tasty). But don’t worry: Surinamese piranhas are friendly, they won’t eat you! If you have restricted time or don’t want to travel half a day or more to reach your destination, nature-reserve Brownsberg is a perfect alternative. Great hiking-trails, impressive waterfalls and the dense forest make it easy to get the jungle-feeling. Sleep in one of the lodges or under the open sky in a hammock. You can travel to Brownsberg by bus, rental-car or book a tour. Not far from Brownsberg you can stay in the recent opened Berg & Dal Eco Resort, build on a former plantation along the Suriname River. The country has, a side from historic Paramaribo and the fathomless jungle, much more to offer. The Atlantic coast of Suriname is one of the best places in the world to view sea turtles, including the marine Leatherback, the largest sea turtle in the world. Between February and August four of the seven existing kinds of turtles come to Suriname to lay their eggs. Watching the turtle rise out of the tides onto the beach, gives one the sense of meeting a friendly sea-monster. Dozens of tour-operators will bring you to Galibi or Matapica, where the turtles ‘land’ at night. A totally different experience awaits you in the farmers-district of Nickerie, with the second largest city of Nieuw Nickerie. It lies near the mouth of the Corantijn River, more than 200 kilometers west of Paramaribo. Easy to reach by road. In this polder-landscape you see the hand of the Dutch colonists: flat and as straight as an arrow. Rice is the principal crop grown in the area. From here you can make a trip to Bigi Pan, a swamp-area which is very popular by birdwatchers. Life in Suriname is, comparing with Caribbean standards, very cheap. What else can you expect from a country where the average monthly income is between 200 and 300 US dollars? In general Surinamese people are very kind. So it’s just a matter of time that Suriname hits the tourist-market worldwide. So now is the time to give it a try and afterwards to say ‘It is really the beating heart of the Amazon!’ Be quick, before the rest of the world knows.

Para muchos, Surinam es un país incógnito que no figura prominentemente en su lista de lugares por visitar. Pero la verdad es que no existe motivo alguno para no explorarlo. Al contrario, su fascinante cultura y en especial la hermosísima selva tropical y distintiva fauna de su indómita jungla lo convierten en destinación obligatoria para cualquiera que tenga algo de sangre aventurera corriéndole por las venas. Experimente una cálida y densa convergencia de ríos latiendo a un ritmo único, producto de la diversidad de sus etnias. ¡Surinam, el autoproclamado corazón latiente del Amazonas, le ofrece lo inesperado! Para la mayoría de sus visitantes, la aventura comienza en el Aeropuerto Internacional Johan Adolf Pengel, a 50 kilómetros al sur de la capital, Paramaribo. Y no olvide visitar el Mercado Central, ubicado en el mismísimo corazón del centro: un bullicioso hormiguero donde encontrará platos y trajes locales y mucho más. Más que todo, sorpréndase por la mezcla de culturas que verá durante esa caminata: amerindios y descendientes de esclavos
africanos viviendo en paz con inmigrantes de la India y de Java, Indonesia. Más recientemente, inmigrantes chinos y del vecino Brasil también han sido bien recibidos. Musulmanes, hindúes y cristianos se mezclan y viven lado a lado como parte de una misma sociedad homogénea. Los surinameses se enorgullecerán de indicarle que en el centro de la cuidad se puede encontrar una sinagoga y una mezquita construidos harmoniosamente, la una al lado de la otra. Surinam ofrece una lección que, dicen los locales, aún se debe aprender en muchas otras partes del mundo.
Variedad culinaria La misma variedad patente en la mezcla de etnias en que consiste la población se encuentra también en la cocina de Surinam. Ésta incluye platos hindúes, indonesios, chinos, criollos, europeos y, con el advenimiento de las grandes cadenas de comida rápida, ahora también estadounidenses. Algunos establecimientos están abiertos de día y noche y comer fuera es, por lo general, muy económico. Con frecuencia, una buena comida no cuesta más de unos cinco dólares EU. En los restaurantes más elegantes se paga de 20 a 25 dólares. En especial la capital, Paramaribo, está repleta de restaurantes, pero también en Nieuw Nickerie, la segunda ciudad más grande, la selección es tan amplia que casi lleva a la indecisión. Cada pequeña aldea o comunidad dispone de por lo menos un restaurante chino o establecimiento hindú o javanés, los así llamados warungs. Entre los más famosos platos (hindúes) figura el roti, una tortilla rellena de carne y/o vegetales y papas. Moksi alesi (arroz con diferentes carnes) es la especialidad de la cocina criolla, y si lo que desea es saoto (una rica sopa con un huevo escalfado), ha de acudir al warung. Centenares de restaurantes a lo largo y ancho del país ofrecen platos chinos comunes y mundialmente conocidos. Si ha probado los

La jungla está aquí, tal cual usted se la imagina, y al alcance del visitante. La mayoría de los turistas visitan Maroon o aldeas indias a lo largo de los ríos Maroni y Alto Surinam, ubicados en Sipaliwini, el mayor de los diez distritos del país. Mi Gudu Tours ofrece lujosísimos tours de cinco días en bote por el interior, de Paramaribo a Nickerie, en la región oeste del país. Es una de las opciones más costosas, pero para el turista que prefiere comodidad y que puede costeárselo, será una experiencia inolvidable.
Además de la histórica Paramaribo y la insondable jungla, Surinam tiene mucho más que ofrecer. Su costa atlántica es uno de los mejores lugares del mundo en donde observar tortugas marinas, incluso las cardón o laúd, que son las tortugas marinas de mayor tamaño en el mundo. De febrero a agosto, cuatro de las siete especies de tortugas existentes visitan Surinam para poner sus huevos. Al verlas emerger de las olas, uno se siente en presencia de un dócil monstruo marino. Hay docenas de tour operadores que lo lleven a Galibi o Matapica, en donde ‘tocan tierra’ de noche las tortugas. Una experiencia totalmente diferente se encuentra en el distrito agrícola de Nickerie. Internationally-known Latin singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra (52) had Curaçao under a spell when he performed there in August. Some ten thousand fans from the island, its neighbours and from as far away as St. Maarten and his home island of Dominican Republic It’s not only Curaçao that his sensual and provocative flocked to hear the nine- voice captivates. He conjures emotions and movements wherever he goes and from whomever his music touches. But what makes Juan Luis time Latin Grammy Guerra so special? Why is it that the hearts of so many women beat just a little faster at the sound of his name? Is it his impressive height? Black, winning maestro. wavy hair? Dark eyes? It’s much more than just mere looks. Women and a great number of men have a tremendous appreciation for this Latin star who makes irresistible songs of poetry and fun lyrics.
In the song, ‘Ojala que llueva café’ (I wish it would rain coffee), he illustrates in a very poetic way the poverty farmers cope with when it doesn’t rain. Still a lot of the world to see Juan Luis Guerra has toured the globe sharing his music. He has sold over 20 million copies worldwide and has collected more than a trophy case of awards including two Grammys. Initially, he had scheduled an early August concert in Curaçao. The possibility to perform in Japan popped up and the singer grabbed the opportunity to take his music to the Far East. His Curaçao and Caribbean fans didn’t mind waiting till the end of August to fall under his spell. “It has always been my wish to perform in Japan and also to get to know the country. Naturally I was very curious about what it’s like to travel in a ‘Shinkansen’ [Japanese Bullet Train] especially because I sing about it in La Travesía, explains the singer. In the song La Travesía (The Voyage), Juan Luis Guerra transports the listener to different countries and cities. With his Japan Concert wish fulfilled, there are still a few countries that have the singer’s curiosity. “I want to know how the Russians dance the Merengue,” says Juan Luis Guerra laughing. “I’ve also never been to England.”
Ministering angel Juan Luis Guerra voice is distinctive and has something special that brings people together. It’s this special touch that helped Mexico heal from the wounds the Mexican Flu inflicted on its once vibrant tourism industry. Bonaire, a part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, lies approximately 40 miles off the coast of Venezuela. The island is 113 square miles and has about 15,000 inhabitants. This means tons of open spaces, lots and lots of nature to experience and enjoy. Its capital, Kralendijk, is affectionately called “Playa” by residents because it borders a sandy beach. The town with its boulevard of pretty houses is a lovely place to walk about or lounge in one of the many terraces and restaurants. It’s also a place for shoppers with several fine shops in the centre. Bonaire has seen a growth in visitors seeking authentic island and nature experiences. Some have fallen in love with peace and natural beautiful of this pearl and have made it home. This influx is visible but has not interrupted any of the quietude. People still greet each other on the streets. Traffic is usually light. So light, in fact, that Bonaire has only one crossroad with traffic lights. Diving and surfing Bonaire is a diver’s paradise as the island’s number plates proudly proclaim. There are 53 dive sites that are easily accessible from shore. In total, Bonaire has 86 official dive sites by yellow buoys. This is the perfect place to take your first diving lessons. Bonaire (meaning good pleasant or good air) is one of the world’s best places to windsurf whether you are a novice or professional. Continual winds, good weather, pleasant sunshine and warm shallow waters in Sorobon create the most idyllic of windsurfing conditions. Bonaire’s award-winning and champion windsurfers are among the best in the world. The island’s champion team practices regularly in places like Sorobon. No visit to Bonaire is complete without a trip to Rincon or the salt pans. These tight white mountains of salt are an attractive, yet strange image in the landscape especially at sunrise and sunset. This circular islet is Klein Bonaire (Small Bonaire), an uninhabited and protected reserve where nature can run its course undisturbed. Faxing, calling, texting, e-mailing, skyping, chatting, facebook, on-line collaboration projects and teleconferencing have all become very important tele- and computer-mediated communication for all kinds of businesses worldwide. They are undoubtedly here to stay in our near future. The value of electronic communication media has become priceless to the business world, but will

anything ever replace the experience of face-toface contact between business people?
Something magic happens faceto-face According to Heim, electronic communication will never equal or surpass the experience of sitting in a same space with the person you are talking to. Is it about breathing the same air while talking? Or hearing the same sounds or smelling each other? Or does our extra sensory perception (ESP) better communicate thoughts unconsciously when we meet person-toperson? Many studies have been conducted that claim to be the proof that something
special goes on when people meet personto-person, compared to electronic “meetings” via communication media. You probably do not need to read these studies to be convinced, because most of us feel intuitively that there is something magic about face-to-face contact.
Social Presence Theory Already of any as we Christie

Anyone who has ever been responsible for developing business relationships outside of his or her immediate surroundings knows that building creditability and trust requires that you travel to meet the people you deal with; and in the Caribbean, that means air-travel!

I go on about 30 business trips by airplane every year, and I’ve met people who travel more than that. But I have never met a businessperson who travels because he or she enjoys going through security checkpoints, fiddling toiletries in little sandwich bags, waiting -or sleeping!!- in airports, taking taxis, renting cars, or checking in and out of hotels. The truth is that there is only one real reason business people travel: it is because they (or their bosses) are convinced that certain face-to-face meetings are more effective and valuable to the company than calling or utilizing any other media; they simply believe that a business trip is worth a thousand calls! According to a recent survey of business travelers by Oxford Economics the following facts were reported: ● over 70% of customers either require or prefer in-person meetings ● over 70% of survey participants see travel as having a significant impact on customer retention. ● nearly 40% of their prospective customers are converted to new customers with an inperson meeting, compared to an average 16% conversion rate without an in-person meeting. According to the U.S. Travel Association, business travel makes up about 15% of all domestic travel in the United States and has become a $240 billion dollar industry in the United States because of the real value and measurable benefits derived from the collaboration and cooperation that can occur only when people are brought together face-to-face. The “perk travelers”, meaning those business people who manage to get themselves scheduled to go on ‘business trips’ without there being a real benefit to the company but only to themselves, have seen their travel schedules slashed in recent years. As the rising oil prices increased air-travel costs, followed by the financial crisis that required companies to cut all budgets, including air-travel budgets, companies have become more selective in requiring air travel for only those who need to have face-to-face meetings for the benefit of the company. According to Frank Schnur, a vice president at AmEx, “most companies can reduce their costs by 30% without actually reducing their travel at
all. There’s a tremendous amount of savings that can be achieved just by traveling smarter.” Becoming more travel-centric instead of tripcentric when planning face-to-face meetings by booking on time, flying during off-seasons, and shopping for hotel and rental car rates using the latest, most advanced online booking engines, cuts the cost of business travel significantly. Cut the cost, but not the travel, because the latter will really cost you in the long run.
Shorter trips, not fewer trips It is interesting to note that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) predicts that U.S. airlines will see only a 7.8% decline in passengers in 2009 while the U.S. Travel Association predicts a 35% decline in business travel (including hotels, car-rental etc) spending in 2009. This indicates that trips may become shorter and that the hotel and wine and dining budgets will be cut, but people will continue to get on the plane and meet their clients face-to-face.

Clearly, air travel for work has changed over the years and, except for the ban on smoking, the changes have generally not resulted in more comfort to the traveler. I cherish the old days when people were allowed to come all the way to the gate to welcome you without having to have a ticket or a security guard along side them. What has not changed in all these years is the necessity and value of taking business trips, meeting people face-to-face and building trust and credibility. Ingredients: ± 3 liter water 600 gr chicken (1/2 chicken) 5 slices galanga root (laos) 4 cloves garlic, whole 1 onion (cut in half over the length) 1 stalk lemon grass (sereh) 1 Indonesian bay leaf (duon salam) 2 large bouillon cubes 5 pc whole allspice 1 tsp black and/or white pepper

Soup. Boil the water in a large pot. Cut the chicken in large pieces, rinse and add to the water. Add the galanga, garlic, onion, lemon grass, Indonesian bay leaf, bouillon cubes, pepper and allspice. Remove the chicken after 30 minutes and let the soup cook for another hour on low heat. Add more bouillon or salt to taste. Once the chicken has cooled off, shred the meat with your fingers or use forks (no chopper). Peel the eggs, rinse and clean the beansprouts. Fry the vermicelli, onion and garlic separately in hot oil. Keep all these ingredients in separate bowls. Serving the soup. In each soup bowl, add one boiled egg, some beansprouts, cabage, fried potatoes, onion/garlic, chicken, topped by vermicelli. Pour the hot soup on top and add celery/parsley. If you like to make it spicy, add some sambal.

Interline agreement with US Airways and Avianca As of the end of October 2009 InselAir will be connected to North America through the interline alliance with US Airways and with South America through the interline alliance with Avianca. The aim is to have all US airways, Avianca and InselAir routes connecting seem less so that passengers will have their flights continuing within a maximum time of 1.5 hours. Tickets can be booked via InselAir on US Airways and Avianca flights to all their different destinations through the world.

Expanding//Expansión InselAir now has three MD-aircrafts and therefore will be able to add four new routes to their flight schedules as of November this year, namely Bogota, Medellin and Caracas to this schedule and making use of their fifth freedom rights InselAir will also start flying on the route Miami - Port au Prince. The fourth MD82-aircraft is expected in early 2010. The MD82-aircraft with 152 seats is operational on all destinations. In addition to Economy Class, there is also a Comfort Class with fifteen chairs, offering extra facilities. InselAir ahora dispone de tres aeronaves MD, haciendo posible que del próximo noviembre en adelante añadan cuatro nuevas rutas a su itinerario de vuelo, que son Bogotá, Medellín y Caracas. Y ejerciendo su derecho de quinta libertad, InselAir también empezará a hacer vuelos en la ruta Miami – Puerto Príncipe. La llegada de la cuarta aeronave MD82 se espera para principios del 2010. Diverse experience
Suriname, the only Dutch speaking country in South America, sits on the shoulder of the continent. Like its people, the experiences travelers can choose from are diverse - a walk through the historical city of Paramaribo, a trek into the Amazon Rainforest or just indulge in the food, spiced with the culture that makes this country special. This is what Advertising Manager Maja Memic and I experienced when we took our trip to Suriname in preparation of this edition of INSIGHTS. We both had never been to Suriname and were very curious to see what it had to offer. We heard good things and wanted to experience it for ourselves. Well, we returned to Curaçao equally enthusiastic about this InselAir destination. Maja was pleasantly surprised by the wideness of the country. And I would have to agree. Maybe it is because we are island people. But once, you land in Suriname, you know: this is a large country. But from experience I can tell you, it’s surely as easy going as a Caribbean island.
Una experiencia muy variada
Surinam, país sentado en el hombro del continente, se distingue por ser el único de habla holandesa en América del Sur. Sus visitantes pueden escoger de entre una amplia variedad de experiencias, tan variadas, de hecho, como los mismos habitantes: Caminatas por la histórica ciudad de Paramaribo, travesías por la selva amazónica, o simplemente disfrutar de la comida, con esos condimentos típicos de la cultura local que hace tan especial este país. Tales fueron las experiencias de la Gerente Publicitaria Maja Memic y mías durante nuestra visita a Surinam en preparación de esta edición de INSIGHTS. Era nuestra primera visita a Surinam y estábamos bastante curiosas por ver lo que tenía que ofrecer. Abundan los buenos informes sobre ese país y estábamos deseosas de experimentar Surinam por cuenta propia. Y podemos decir que a nuestro regreso en Curazao, el entusiasmo que teníamos por esta destinación de InselAir seguía intacta. A Maja le sorprendió favorablemente lo extenso del país, y yo no puedo sino concordar. Será quizá que somos isleñas, pero tan pronto se aterriza en Surinam, se siente: este país es vasto.
Hotel Krasnapolsky in the centre of the capital Paramaribo welcomed us with really very friendly staff. And an insider’s tip led us to dine at the Blauwgrond area which offers delicious Javanese food; I really liked the “saoto” soup there. The thai food at the Garden of Eden, which is beautifully decorated by the way, was also delicious. Suriname people are proud off their county and their diverse kitchen. You can taste it. Topping it all off was our trip to Bergendal. This was an experience on its own. The quietness in this beautiful nature setting was wonderful. The ambiance, the food and again the friendly staff made sure you relax and enjoy your stay in the Suriname “Binnenlanden”. Looking at the photo’s we took, we can’t help but reminisce about the experience of the old but still beautiful City of Paramaribo, kayaking on the Suriname River or the Canopy ride between the massive trees in the rainforest. Sin embargo, de experiencia propia puedo decir que el ambiente allá es tan sosegado como el de cualquier isla Caribeña. El Hotel Krasnapolsky, en el centro de la capital Paramaribo, nos dio la bienvenida con un personal verdaderamente amigable. Un dato de buena fuente nos llevó a cenar en el área de Blauwgrond, donde se sirven exquisitos platos javaneses. A mí me encantó la sopa de saoto. También estuvieron deliciosos los platos taiwaneses en el - dígase de paso, hermosamente decorado - Garden of Eden (Jardín de Edén). Los surinameses se enorgullecen de su tierra y su variada cocina, y se siente en el paladar. La culminación fue nuestro viaje a Bergendal, una experiencia en sí. La quietud reinante en este precioso entorno natural es algo maravilloso. El ambiente, la comida y una vez más el amigable personal se encargan de que uno se relaje y disfrute de su estadía en la región Binnenlanden (tierra adentro) de Surinam. Al ver nuestras fotos de viaje, no podemos sino recordar con anhelo la antigua pero atractiva cuidad de Paramaribo, el viaje en kayak en el río Surinam o el viaje por cuerda entre las copas de los gigantescos arboles de la pluviselva. ¿Estas listo para experimentar Surinam por sí mismo?
