A
ugust 28, 2006 – the day of the first commercial flight of InselAir - marked the beginning of a new and exciting era for civil aviation in the Netherlands Antilles, and in Curaçao in particular. The establishment of Insel Air International B.V. (InselAir) on the island of Curaçao brought back a national carrier to the island, and a premium airline to the Caribbean region and the northern part of South America. A group of local entrepreneurs took up the challenge to ensure that Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire would have guaranteed airlift in the region for their people, for visitors and for the economy. The island economies are very much depending on airlift to surrounding destinations. Since the first flights to Aruba and Bonaire on August 28, 2006, InselAir has expanded its flights and is now servicing 13 destinations such as Miami, Puerto Rico, St Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Surinam, Trinidad, Haiti, The Dominican Republic as well as Punto Fijo, Barquisimeto and Valencia in Venezuela. And through agreements with other airlines, InselAir provides better connectivity and services to other Caribbean destinations. Although the headquarters are in Curaçao, InselAir has positioned dedicated teams across the region at many of its destinations to ensure that operations run smoothly, and to provide convenient service to our passengers. In the past two years our passengers have been able to enjoy attractive fares, and they appreciate the happy atmosphere on board of our flights. InselAir – in cooperation with its travel partners and tour operators – also offers packages to several destinations, which include accommodation, car rentals and tickets. As a young airline, InselAir will remain focused on continuous improvement of it’s services. We do that by listening to our passengers. gosto 28, 2006 – el día del primer vuelo comercial de InselAir – marcó el comienzo de una nueva y excitante era para la aviación civil en las Antillas Holandesas, particularmente en Curaçao. El establecimiento de Insel Air Internacional B.V. (InselAir) en la isla de Curaçao trajo una vez más una compañía aérea nacional a la isla y al mismo tiempo, estableció una aerolínea primordial para la región caribeña y la zona norte de América del Sur. Un grupo de empresarios locales tomaron la iniciativa al aceptar este gran reto para asegurarse de que Curaçao, Aruba y Bonaire tuviesen transporte aéreo garantizado en la región para sus habitantes, sus visitantes y para la economía en general. Las economías de las islas dependen mucho del transporte aéreo para poder conectarse con los demás destinos dentro de la región. t is with great pleasure that I accepted INSIGHTS’ invitation to write an introductory welcome. The introduction of an inflight magazine marks another highlight in the development of InselAir.
When InselAir submitted its request for a permit to operate scheduled flights, the company made it clear that it had opted for a phased introduction of services. The company would start small and would gradually add more aircraft to the fleet and destinations to the network. Based on a schedule of events submitted by the company, a certification process was started to show that the company complied with all the relevant laws and regulations. InselAir finished the certification process successfully and on August 11, 2006 the air operator certificate was issued to the company. InselAir executed its first commercial flight with a Bandeirante with registration marks PJ-VIP on the route Curaçao – Aruba –Curaçao on August 29, 2006. Since that first flight the company started services to Aruba, Bonaire, St. Maarten, Punto Fijo, Valencia, Surinam, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Miami. With the first flight to Miami on November 21, 2008, this young company reached another major milestone. InselAir became one of the first new foreign airlines to be certified by the American authorities under the rules imposed after the events of September 11. The government of the Netherlands Antilles is very happy with the positive development of InselAir. It goes without saying that InselAir plays an important role in the transport sector of our country. As our country consists of five islands, aviation is of utmost importance to us. Whether we are dealing with tourists who visit our islands during their holidays, local people visiting friends and relatives on one of the islands, or business travellers; all these would not be possible without aviation. Tourism is the most important pillar of our economy. Almost all these tourists, arriving from Europe, USA, South America or the Caribbean, reach our islands by aircraft. Especially with regard to services between the islands of the Netherlands Antilles, services to and from various destinations in the region and services to Miami, InselAir plays a very important role. It is of great importance to us that services to, from and via our country are carried out in a safe and efficient manner. With this frame-work we ensure an adequate overview of our airlines, airports, air traffic service units etc. to guarantee that they meet the standards set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization. We would like to invite you to visit the home of InselAir, visit the Netherlands Antilles and enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our islands. n

Cuando InselAir presentó la petición para obtener el permiso para operar vuelos regulares, dejó bien claro que había optado por la introducción de sus servicios en varias etapas. La compañía aérea comenzaría modestamente, para gradualmente añadir más aviones a su flota y más destinos a su red. El proceso de certificación comenzó al recibir la documentación necesaria emitida por InselAir demostrando que la compañía cumplía con todas las normas y regulaciones necesarias. InselAir aprobó el proceso, y el 11 de agosto del 2006 recibió el certificado de operador aéreo. InselAir realizó su primer vuelo comercial con un Bandeirante con las marcas de registro PJ-VIP en la ruta Curaçao-Aruba-Curaçao el 29 de Agosto del 2006. Desde este primer vuelo la compañía comenzó vuelos a Aruba, Bonaire, St.Maarten, Punto Fijo, Valencia, Surinam, La Republica Dominicana, Haiti, y Miami. Con el primer vuelo a Miami el 21 de noviembre del 2008, esta joven compañía alcanzó otro hito. InselAir se convirtió en una de las primeras líneas aéreas extranjeras en ser certificada por las Autoridades Aeronáuticas Americanas bajo las reglas impuestas después de los hechos ocurridos el 11 de septiembre. El gobierno de las Antillas Holandesas está muy satisfecho con el desarrollo positivo de InselAir. No cabe la menor duda que InselAir juega un importantísimo papel en el sector del transporte en nuestro país. Como nuestro país consiste de cinco islas, la aviación es de suma importancia para nosotros. Los viajes turísticos, los de negocios ó los que efectúan nuestros ciudadanos entre las islas, no serían posibles sin la aviación. El turismo es la base más importante de nuestra economía. Casi todos los turistas que llegan desde Europa, los EEUU, Sur-América, o del Caribe, llegan a nuestras islas en avión. InselAir juega un importante papel en cuanto a las conexiones entre las islas de las Antillas Holandesas y hacia Miami. Es de suma importancia para nosotros que los servicios a, desde, y vía nuestro país sean llevados a cabo de una forma segura y eficiente. What is trust?
TRUST; THE WORD TRUST IS EXCESSIVELY USED ON A DAILY BASIS ALL AROUND THE GLOBE WHEN ADDRESSING POLITICAL AND ECONOMICAL ISSUES. THE WORD IS EVENLY IMPORTANT AND USED IN RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, BUSINESSES AND COUNTRIES.
The English Dictionary defines the word Trust as “the trait of believing in honesty and reliability of others”. Not everyone is aware that the word Trust is also the name for a corporate service industry that in fact relies on honesty and reliability. But what does this exactly entail? Trust companies render corporate services to their clients, typically the incorporation of companies, management and administration thereof. By nature these services are rendered in jurisdictions other than where the clients reside. For a number of reasons it can be desirable to have assets belonging to businesses or individuals, reside in other jurisdictions in order to benefit from the legislation in such jurisdiction. This is often referred to as off shore structuring which in fact is a form of jurisdiction shopping, a phenomenon most commonly used in manufacturing (in low wage jurisdictions as China or Taiwan). In the same manner jurisdictions can also be used to accommodate intellectual property rights, investments, corporate finance centers or even movable assets. Trust companies provide access in such jurisdictions to legal entities (companies, foundations) that can hold these types of assets for their clients. Trust companies take care of the incorporation of the companies and provide a registered address. They act as or provide managing directors to such companies and take care of the day to day management. They ensure compliance with local legislation by ensuring proper registration and licensing, and providing bookkeeping and financial administration. Now why would anyone wish to retain these types of services? The most common motive is tax planning. The goal of tax planning is to arrange your financial affairs to minimize your taxes. Setting up companies or foundations in foreign jurisdictions allows these entities, despite the fact that the owner or incorporator may live thousands of miles away, to be subject to the laws and taxes of the place where they have been registered or managed. Therefore, if the jurisdiction of your choice has no or little corporate taxes, then your company will have no or little tax obligations, though obviously your personal tax position might be different.

Opting for a specific jurisdiction can be based on more than just tax benefits. Certain jurisdictions are preferred when confidentiality and anonymity are crucial and on the part of local authorities are guaranteed by their legislation (asset protection). Anonymity can be of life saving importance for residents of countries with a high rate of criminal activity such as kidnapping and armed robbery. Alison Hinds is known as the Soca Queen. Her number one hit “Roll it Gal” has cemented her in Soca’s Hall of Fame. Her ascension to the top began when she started singing with the band, Square One, in her native Barbados.
ince then Alison Hinds has developed her own show, The Alison Hinds Show, and has been spreading Soca not only in the Caribbean but to the rest of the world. Her spread of Soca brought her to the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao [her last visit to Curaçao was in November 2008], and it is here that she talks about Soca, her future plans, and why it is so important to promote the empowerment of women in her songs. How does it feel to be dubbed the queen of Soca? It feels good to be considered the Queen of Soca. I am not the only queen of Soca as there are many females involved in Soca music. But it is something my fans gave to me. It wasn’t a title that I gave to myself. It was something that developed over the years and now people refer to me as that. I take pride in what I do. I definitely do my best. I give a 150% when I hit the stage [or] when I go to the studio to record my music. This is a business and I take it very seriously. I do my best to try live up to that title as much as I can. Can you tell us exactly what Soca music is? Soca music is a cousin of Calypso. It actually started off as a mixture of soul and calypso. And it is more party oriented; it has lots of energy, it is very interactive in terms of the audience and getting the audience involved, singing, dancing, waving, and all of that. Something else that has come out of Soca music is RaggaSoca, which is a medium tempo soca music. The subject matter can be love songs or anything that’s a little bit deeper, nice melodies, all of that. But at the end of the day Soca music is the Caribbean, it is West Indian music. It is the music of the Southern
Caribbean actually and Trinidad is an exponent of Soca. Barbados, St. Lucia and quite a few islands in the Southern Caribbean are definitely exponents of Soca music. And it is something that I and many other artists in this genre are trying to spread far and wide throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world. Do you think that by being in the Dutch Caribbean and performing here that you are spreading the wings of Soca music? I hope so. And the excitement that I have experienced so far has been really, really good. When I got back to the hotel last night after dinner there were some high school kids, and as soon as they saw me they started screaming, “Oh my God, it’s Alison Hinds”. And they were saying they were so excited to come to the show and that’s good. These are teenagers and for them to be interested and excited about a Soca artist and a Soca show is great. That is great! If my presence here is helping to spread the gospel of Soca music then half of my job is done. Half of my job is to raise the awareness of Soca music and expose people to the music and the other half is just to have a great, great time performing. Do you think that you might one day infuse the music of Curaçao with Soca music? Definitely! I definitely see collaborations in the future.

people and the beat is not far off from Soca music, so the music is going to take the people. I have performed in countries like France and Belgium where people partied and danced to Soca music. In the Dutch Caribbean I don’t think it will be a problem for them to appreciate Soca because they are rhythmic Caribbean people. You seem to sing a lot about the empowerment of women in your songs, why is that? It is very important for me that I do so because I have a daughter and I want her to grow up to be strong and independent, and sure of herself. I want her to be able to make wise decisions and to be sure of whom she is and where she belongs. I am very passionate about young women and about them building up selfesteem. It seems as though there are a lot of young women out there who don’t seem as though they care and they need to learn to take control. Taking control means that you’re able to make good and wise decisions. I try my best to spread that message whether on or off stage. Women need to learn to stand up for themselves! Do you think that Soca music may one day become mainstream music? I can’t say for sure that it will. I can only hope so; there is a lot to be done. VP records is doing a lot and pushing our name. In Soca each artist is an individual, there isn’t a collective group.

There is no one pushing that, and that is what needs to happen to make Soca mainstream. That is nowhere in sight. Soca needs a vehicle; an institution to promote the name of Soca worldwide. If Soca is to make it mainstream, distribution needs to improve. There is a real lack of distribution. Although you will find Soca in the mom and pop stores in the West Indian communities, Soca is not there in the major stores. This needs to improve. These are the things that would need to be enhanced to make a dent on the world’s stage. How does it feel to be one of the most recognisable female Soca artists? Personally, it’s not easy, but by being in the world market I do my best to really live up to whatever expectation there is. I do my best to establish my talents and ability. What would you like to see happening to Soca music in the future? What are some of your future plans? I would like to see Soca made an official genre. I want that to happen. I want to see it in mainstream in a big way. I want to see [Soca] artists being interviewed by Ellen or Oprah. Ultimately, I want to see a Grammy for Soca music. I want to develop my own show. I would like to produce a Vegas style show. I want to produce a show from a Caribbean point of view, and incorporate my music and include others as well. ■

¿Nos puedes contar que es exactamente la música soca? La música soca es un prima del Calipso. En realidad empezó como una mezcla de Soul y Calipso. Y está más orientada hacia las fiestas, tiene mucha energía, es muy interactivo con el público involucrándolo a cantar, bailar, y todo eso. Y algo más que surgió del soca es el RaggaSoca, que es la música Soca en un tiempo medio. Los temas puede ser canciones de amor o cualquier tema que sea más profundo, buenas melodías, todo eso. Pero al final del día el Soca es el Caribe, es música Antillana. En realidad es la música del sur del Caribe y Trinidad es el exponente del Soca. Barbados, St. Lucia y varias islas más al sur del Caribe son definitivamente los exponentes del Soca. Y esto es algo que yo y muchos otros artistas del mismo género estamos intentando propagar por todas partes del Caribe y el resto del mundo. ¿Crees que al estar en las Antillas Holandesas y actuando aquí estas expandiendo el Soca? Eso espero. Y el entusiasmo que he experimentado hasta ahora ha sido muy, muy bueno. No puedo decir con seguridad que será así. Solo puedo pensar en positivo eso; hay mucho por hacer. Discos VP está haciendo mucho y empujando nuestro nombre. En la música Soca cada artista es un individuo, no es un grupo colectivo. No hay nadie apoyando esto y eso es lo que el Soca necesita para convertirse en música popular. Esto no está a la vista. El Soca necesita un vehículo, una institución para promover el nombre del Soca mundialmente. Si la música Soca quiere llegar a ser parte de la música popular, la distribución tiene que
mejorar. Hay una verdadera carencia en la distribución. Aunque puedes encontrar discos de música Soca en los negocios familiares en las comunidades de las Antillas, la música Soca no se puede encontrar en las tiendas principales. Esto tiene que mejorar. Estas son las cosas que necesitarían intensificar para hacerse un hueco en el escenario mundial. ¿Es fácil para ti ser una de las artistas femeninas más conocidas del Soca? Personalmente no es fácil, pero estando en el mercado mundial hago lo que puedo para incrementar cualquier expectativa. Ortanique on the Mile serving Caribbean cuisine, and Cacao, for fine Spanish dining. Although Coral Gables is not known for its after dinner nightlife, the high quality of restaurants are more than worth visiting one or two nights during your stay.
Coconut Grove: The Grove was established in the early 1800s by an influx of Northerners, and later on, the English and Bahamians gave this part of Miami a very eclectic, artsy feeling. With great restaurants, outdoor bars and cafes, Coconut Grove should be enjoyed by parking your car and walking around. Little alleys with specialty shops give it a truly warm neighborhood feeling. There is also an open air mall containing a large number of shops. Don’t forget to stop by the Historical Mayfair hotel and if time permits visit their rooftop lounge which recently opened. Other interesting places are the recently opened Crazy Pianos (the owners are the same ones that run the famous Crazy Pianos in the Netherlands) and side street open air cafes such as Green Street Café and Le Bouchon. The Grove even has some very popular franchise restaurants such
as the Cheesecake Factory and Chilis. One of the most visited attractions in the Grove is Villa Vizcaya, built in the early 1900s, where many local events are hosted.
Brickell: The development of Brickell started in the early 1900’s by Mary Brickell. Over the years mansions were built which then gave way for office buildings and high-rise condo buildings, creating the heart to the financial industry of Miami. The building of the condos over the last few years have also led to the

building of unique restaurants like Perricone’s, Porcao (Brazilian churrascaria), Big Fish and one of my favorites, a charming restaurant called Indochine providing casual Asian dining. The opening of the five star Mandarin Oriental Hotel with two fine dining restaurants, offers tourists even more reasons to visit and stay around the Brickell area. The development of Mary Brickell Village, an open air mall hosting stores, great restaurants and lounges, has added even more charm to the Brickell area. This inviting outdoor mall provides a variety of places to spend your evening including Segafredo, a so-called coffee shop that turns into one of the hottest night clubs on Brickell. In addition, with bars and lounges such as Blue Martini, Novecento and Side Bar nearby there is no need to wander off to the beach. So, as I plan for my weekend and venture out for a pleasant evening I have a unique and wide selection of places to choose from. Depending on your mood and interests, Brickell, the Gables, and the Grove all offer numerous places to meet everyone’s idea of an enjoyable night out in Miami. ■

Bienvenido al resucitado Miami: Haga lo que hacen los locales Son las seis de la tarde de un viernes y como muchos, comienzo a planear mi fin de semana contemplando las opciones de entretenimiento que ofrece Miami. Hace tres años me hubiese ido automáticamente a cenar a South Beach, disfrutar de una noche de compras y tal vez terminado la noche bailando en alguna discoteca de moda. Sin embargo, desde hace poco, Miami empezó a ofrecer otra gama de opciones impresionando a mucha gente de la vida nocturna como a mí. Lugares como Brickell, Coconut Grove y Coral Gables han crecido significantemente, y rápidamente se han convertido en lugares populares con centros comerciales, discotecas y bares tipo ‘lounge’.

n poco tiempo, Brickell se ha transformado de una conocida área de negocios y zona residencial, a un lugar moderno con entretenimiento y vida nocturna. Coconut Grove y Coral Gables han resucitado; ofreciendo diversas opciones para salir a cenar y de copas tanto para la gente local (si eso existe en Miami) como para los turistas, volviendo al cálido ambiente que estos dos lugares ofrecían en el pasado. Ya que Miami se ha convertido en la capital de tanto Sur América, el Caribe y Europa, estás tres áreas [Brickell, Coconut Grove y Coral Gables], que se encuentran a corta distancia el uno del otro, ofrecen algo para todos los que quieran disfrutar de la vida nocturna. Desde la típica hamburguesa americana a la lujosa cocina italiana, francesa o caribeña, estos tres lugares son ideales para cualquier paladar y presupuesto. Después de cenar, uno puede gozar de las inmensas opciones ofrecidas: bares ´lounge´, bares de degustación de vinos y/o puros, y discotecas donde un puede bailar al ritmo de la música latina, internacional, dance o disfrutar de música en vivo.
The Gables: La historia de Coral Gables es visible desde el momento que uno lo atraviesa. El estilo arquitectónico mediterráneo da la sensación de que uno regresa al pasado. Este área a solo pocos minutos de Coconut Grove y Brickell, tiene por lo menos 130 restaurantes, tiendas gourmet y boutiques de diseño. La calle más popular de Coral Gables se llama Miracle
Mile; muy famosa por su gran variedad de tiendas nupciales. ‘The Village of Merrick Park’, un centro comercial pintoresco, con fuentes y un precioso jardín, da una sensación acogedora mientras uno anda de compras por tiendas lujosas y grandes almacenes con gran variedad de ropa, joyas, accesorios y demás. En el centro comercial también hay unos restaurantes exquisitos. Coral Gables representa a los sofisticados residentes y turistas de Miami, que pueden escoger entre excelentes restaurantes como: Ruth Chris, Morton’s Steakhouse y Café Abracci. En Coral Gables también están mis restaurantes favoritos: Ortanique en el Miracle Mile sirviendo cocina caribeña, y Cacao, de cocina española. Aunque Coral Gables no es muy conocido por su vida nocturna, recomiendo su alta calidad en restaurantes que vale la pena visitar una o dos noches durante su estancia en Miami.
Coconut Grove: Coconut Grove fue establecido a principios del siglo XIX por una gran afluencia de inmigrantes del norte del país. Años más tarde, los ingleses y los bahamenses, le añadieron un toque muy ecléctico y artístico. Con buenísimos restaurantes, cafeterías y terrazas, Coconut Grove debería ser disfrutando a pie. Los estrechos callejones, con sus tiendas especializadas, le dan un toque cálido, como si uno caminara por su propio barrio. También hay un centro comercial al aire libre lleno de tiendas de todo tipo. No se olvide visitar el histórico Hotel Mayfair, y si el tiempo lo permite, visite el bar que acaban de abrir en la azotea.

Otros lugares de interés que acaban de abrir sus puertas son: Crazy Pianos (los dueños de este local son los mismos dueños del famoso Crazy Pianos de Holanda) y las cafeterías Green Street Café y Le Bouchon. En Coconut Grove también se encuentran las franquicias populares The Cheesecake Factory y Chilis. Una de las atracciones más visitadas en Coconut Grove es Villa Vizcaya, construida a principios del siglo XX, y la sede de muchos eventos locales.
Brickell: El desarrollo de Brickell comenzó a principios del siglo XIX por la propia Mary Brickell. Durante los años se construyeron mansiones que mas en adelante cedieron su lugar a bloques de oficinas y apartamentos, llegando a crear, lo que es hoy en día, el centro financiero de Miami. La construcción de apartamentos en los últimos años ha influido la creación de restaurantes únicos como Perricone’s, Porcao (churrascaría brasileña), Big Fish y uno de mis favoritos: un restaurante acogedor llamado Indochine, que ofrece comida asiática. La apertura del hotel de cinco estrellas, Mandarin Oriental, con dos restaurantes de lujo, brinda a los turistas mayor razón para visitar Brickell. El desarrollo del Mary Brickell Village, un centro comercial al aire libre, con exquisitos restaurantes y bares, han añadido aún más encanto al área de Brickell. Lugares nocturnos como Segafredo, una cafetería que se convierte en uno de los clubes más sonados de Brickell, se encuentra entre bares como Blue Martini, Novecento, y Side Bar. Con esta selección de lugares uno no tiene necesidad de irse a la playa. Con una gran variedad de lugares a donde ir, estoy listo para pasármelo bien. Crisis? What Crisis? By: Nico Kluyver

emember this verse? It’s the last verse of the track “Easy Does It” of Supertramp’s 1975 album titled “Crisis? What Crisis?”. A witty laid-back song if there ever was one! Although the song came out many years before Bobby McFerrin’s better known “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, it certainly has a similar ‘whistle-‘n-relax groove’. Incidentally, as I write this, the words of the verse bring Churandy Martina’s recent Olympic silver medal crisis to mind, as if they were written for it. Churandy is our superstar indeed; and our highly regarded role model in the way he has dealt with his Olympic silver medal situation. [Churandy Martina finished second in the 200 metres at the Beijing Olympic Games of 2008, but was later disqualified for running out of his lane]. What a brilliant choice to start an album called ‘Crisis? What Crisis?’ with a relaxing whistlesong. It reminds me of the relaxing whistle with which we here in Curaçao have started our days for the last twenty-something years; whistling while always facing some kind of local crisis. And did we have our share! Dealing with crisis has become a way of life here in Curaçao: recurring high unemployment numbers, steep interest rates, numerous crashes of the real estate market, serious industry collapses (the departure of Royal Dutch Shell and the collapse of the offshore sector to name a few), tense political and labor force relationships, and last but not least, the catastrophic airlift crisis that started in 2004. Remember [that] for an island, airlift is the bread and butter of its existence because it connects the otherwise isolated people and economy to its neighboring islands and continents.
The word ‘crisis’ has become ‘hip’ and overused over the last months, but did you ever look at a definition? Here is how Answers.com defines it: Crisis - a crucial or decisive point or situation; a turning point; an unstable condition, as in political, social, or economic affairs, involving an impending abrupt or decisive change; a point in a story or drama when a conflict reaches its highest tension and must be resolved. A string of unexciting words, I agree, but I dare to change the last words of this definition for Curaçao to: “….highest tension that will be resolved.” Over the last decades Curaçao has been blessed with numerous unexpected surprises and turns of events that resolved serious threats and brought new opportunities when doom scenarios seemed unavoidable. Some kind of guiding angel has been holding our hand all those years. It can also be noted that Curaçao has proven itself to be a contrarian, to use an investment term. We don’t do well when the world booms, but we seem to do just fine when the world is in turmoil. While the world was booming around us as the technology and mortgage backed (real estate) bubbles were being inflated to the benefit of many people world-wide, we in Curaçao had very little immediate positive spin-offs in our economy. There were some exceptions perhaps, such as the hedge fund administration industry and those that had the luxury to invest in the international stock markets. But to the man on the street here in Curaçao much of all that went by completely unnoticed.

With regards to the recent crisis, our guiding angel may partly have been the long-standing, unpopular restriction which our Central Bank has imposed on financial institutions from freely investing their assets in foreign markets. It has been reported that the crisis has had no negative impact on our banking system, and that the banks can comply with all the obligations towards deposits and savings accounts. Aside from the healthy banking system, look at Curaçao now while the world is in trouble: our real estate ended the year at an all-time high, tourism volumes are up, employment is up, transport statistics are up, interest in foreign direct investments is up, and last but not least, more of our students studying abroad seem to return home to Curaçao after completing their studies abroad. Also, do not forget that the recent price reductions in gasoline, water and electricity make a bigger difference here than in other countries. This is because these oil-based expenses make up a bigger part of our personal and business budgets in comparison to most other countries. It is true: things are generally looking good here in Curaçao; which country can boast that growth perspectives are positive for 2009, even after the effects of the crisis? Yes, in Curaçao we can! Understandably so, many people wonder if our tourism industry will be affected by the reduction in spending power of the American and European tourists as a result of the crisis. Let me offer some thoughts on that. In the first place, it is well-known that many more tourists want to come to Curaçao than we have rooms to offer. Therefore, even when the new hotels are completed, and assuming a decrease in that demand due to the crisis, the room occupancy should be just fine. Secondly, American tourists who previously went on expensive trips to Asia and Europe may opt for an alternative closer to home: the Caribbean. And don’t forget that European tourists will probably continue to benefit from the strong Euro for a while, keeping travel to Curaçao as an attractive alternative. Having said all that, what is Curaçao’s true little secret in dealing with crises? Well for one, I must confess, we have created quite a few of them ourselves, which helps in knowing how to
solve them. But nonetheless I invite the world to learn from us here in Curaçao, as we have become masters in managing stress levels during times of crisis, by simply whistling every morning: ‘… one, two, three, four, five, six: ….easy does it!’ Finally, having started with the last verse of the song “Easy Does It”, I will end with the first verse, in the contrarian spirit. The text of this first verse is especially appropriate because it beautifully expresses the passion and entrepreneurial spirit of all of those involved in turning the recent airlift crisis in Curaçao into a wonderful opportunity called Insel Air: And if my heart’s had wings, I’d be the bird that sings, I’d fly where love isn’t shy And everyone is willing to try. n

e acuerda de esta estrofa? Es la última estrofa de la canción “Easy does it” del álbum de 1975 de Supertramp titulado “Crisis? What Crisis?” (¿Crisis? ¿Qué crisis?). Una canción muy chistosa e ingeniosa. A pesar de que saliera muchos antes que la popular canción de Bobby McFerrin, titulada “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, las dos tienen un “feeling” similar muy relajante.
Incidentalmente, al escribir esto, las palabras de la estrofa me hacen recordar lo acontecido con Churandy Martina en los recientes Juegos Olímpicos, como si las palabras de la estrofa fueron escritas para aquella situación. Churandy es nuestro héroe nacional, y lo consideramos un modelo a seguir por la forma que actuó al perder la medalla de plata. [Churandy Martina terminó en segundo lugar en los 200 metros de los Juegos Olímpicos de Pekin del 2008, pero fue descalificado poco después de haber atravesado la línea divisoria).

trayendo nuevas oportunidades cuando el fin parecía inevitable. Algún ángel de la guarda nos ha agarrado de la mano todos estos años. También se puede tomar nota que en términos de inversión Curaçao ha demostrado ser contrario. Cuando el mundo está en auge, Curaçao marcha bien, pero cuando el mundo está sumido en el caos, Curaçao no marcha bien. Cuando el mundo estaba en auge gracias a la tecnología y las hipotecas, las burbujas se inflaban en beneficio de mucha gente en el mundo; a nosotros en Curaçao nos afectó poco económicamente.

Que buena elección que la primera canción del álbum llamado “¿Crisis? ¿Qué Crisis?” comience con un silbido tan relajante. Este silbido me hace recordar a nosotros, que desde hace veintipico años, haya crisis o no, comenzamos el día silbando. ¡Y cuantas crisis hemos pasado! Poder tratar con la crisis se ha convertido en un estilo de vida aquí en Curaçao: frecuentes tasas altas de desempleo, descomunales tarifas de interés, numerosos colapsos del mercado inmobiliario, graves colapsos industriales (cuando se fue la Shell y el colapso del sector off-shore, entre otros), relaciones tensas entre los sectores laborales y políticos, y por último la crisis aérea que comenzó en el 2004. Recuerde que para una isla, el transporte aéreo es vital para su existencia, ya que conecta a la población y a la economía a las islas vecinas y sus respectivos continentes. La palabra ‘crisis’ se ha puesto de moda en los últimos meses, ¿pero alguna vez ha buscado su definición? Esta es la definición de Answers. com: “un punto crucial o decisivo; un hito; una condición inestable, como político, social o asunto económico, involucrando un cambio decisivo inminente o abrupto; un punto en una historia donde un conflicto llega a su máximo y tiene que ser resuelto. Estoy de acuerdo que son una serie de palabras nada fascinantes, pero me arriesgo a cambiar las últimas palabras de esta definición de crisis y usándolas para una definición para Curaçao: “…mayor tensión que será resuelta.” En las últimas décadas Curaçao ha sido bendecida por numerosas sorpresas y desarrollos inesperados que resolvieron serias amenazas asimismo
Tal vez hubieron algunas excepciones, como la administración industrial del ‘hedge fund’ y los que tuvieron el lujo de invertir en el mercado internacional. Pero la persona local aquí en Curaçao ni se dio cuenta. Con respecto a la reciente crisis, nuestro ángel de la guarda puede haber sido en parte la antigua e impopular restricción que nuestro banco central lleva imponiendo en las instituciones financieras de invertir libremente sus bienes en mercados extranjeros. Se ha reportado que la crisis no ha tenido un impacto negativo en nuestro sistema bancario, y que todos los bancos pueden cumplir
¿Qué país puede alardear que las perspectivas de crecimiento para el 2009 son positivas después del efecto de la crisis? con todas las obligaciones referente a los depósitos y cuentas de ahorros. Aparte del sistema bancario sano, échele un vistazo a Curaçao mientras el mundo se sumerge en los problemas: nuestro mercado inmobiliario terminó con un máximo histórico, los volúmenes turísticos subieron, las tasas de empleo subieron, las estadísticas de transporte subieron, el interés en inversiones directas extranjeras subieron y por último, más y más estudiantes que estudian fuera de Curaçao vuelven a la isla al terminar sus carreras. Tampoco hay que olvidar las recientes reducciones del precio de la gasolina, del agua
y de la electricidad que se notan más aquí que en otros países. Estos gastos, basados en el petróleo, los tenemos más en cuenta dentro de nuestros presupuestos que la mayoría de la gente en otros países. Es verdad: desde aquí las cosas se ven bien. ¿Qué país puede alardear que las perspectivas de crecimiento para el 2009 son positivas después del efecto de la crisis? ¡En Curaçao, sí que podemos! Aún así, mucha gente se pregunta si el turismo se verá afectado por la reducción de gastos de los turistas americanos y europeos debido a la crisis. Déjeme darles mi opinión. En primer lugar, se sabe que no hay suficiente alojamiento para todos los turistas que quieren venir a Curaçao. Por lo tanto, asumiendo que haya una disminución en la demanda de alojamiento debido a la crisis, la ocupación hotelera no se verá afectada. En segundo lugar, los turistas americanos que previamente se daban el lujo en irse de vacaciones a Asia y Europa ahora opten por una alternativa más cercana a su casa: el Caribe. Sin embargo, yo invito al resto del mundo a aprender de nosotros (ya que nos hemos convertido en expertos en manejar niveles de estrés en tiempos de crisis) al silbar cada mañana: “…one, two, three, four, five, six: ...easy does it!” (¡Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis: …fácil lo hace) Finalmente, habiendo comenzado con la última estrofa de la canción “Easy Does It” (Fácil lo hace), terminaré con la primera estrofa, en el espíritu contrario. El texto de la primera estrofa es especialmente apropiada, ya que expresa estupendamente la pasión y el espíritu empresarial de todos los involucrados en cambiar la reciente crisis aérea en Curaçao a una maravillosa oportunidad llamada Insel Air: (Y si mi corazón tuviera alas Yo sería el pájaro que canta, Volaría donde el amor no es tímido Y todos estén dispuestos a intentar). n

Thanks to luck, persistence, and the desire of visiting San Francisco I had the pleasure of meeting one of the best writers produced by the literally world. I agreed to meet Isabel Allende at the San Francisco Jewish Community Center, where later on that same night, she was going to share her experience and stories in an auditorium filled up by a cosmopolitan crowd. I wanted to interview her with unusual themes. Many people already know who Isabel Allende is and have read her novels; but few know about her voyages. And with voyages I mean inspiration, work, themes, and Isabel Allende as a passenger.

s travelling a source of inspiration to you? Partly, partly... I have travelled a lot in life. My mother first got married to a diplomat, I am a diplomat’s daughter, and after she divorced my father, she married another [diplomat]. So I started travelling when I was ten years old and travelled during my whole childhood and youth. When the military coup occurred [in Chile] in 1973, I took exile in Venezuela. My books are published in many languages. And every editor wants me to go and help with the promotion, which each book, in every country, which is impossible of course; but I have to travel a lot. Once a year, at least, I go on holiday with the family on a private trip that has nothing to do with work to a remote place, or a place where I would normally not go to. For example: a safari in Africa, the Galapagos, the Amazon... those type of places. Travelling, the trip itself, is also a theme in your novels. Your characters travel or come from a faraway land. Does that have any particular meaning or is it part of the story? I think it has slightly been my destiny. I have been everything. I have been a traveller, an exile, a political refugee, an immigrant; I have always been a foreigner wherever I have been because when I go back to Chile I also feel like a foreigner. I haven’t lived there for thirty years. So when I go there I’m happy for a week and then I start to see that I don’t belong there either, I don’t fit in. So then, that marginal feeling, that one is a foreigner everywhere, is very useful to see things from a different angle. Just as one sees it when they are in another country. If I go, for instance, to India I don’t see things like a person who lives there. For me everything is fascinating! Everything is different! I have a million of questions that a person who lives there does not ask themselves. Even in the United States, I have been here for twenty years, I am married to an American, and in any case, everything seems foreign to me. I always ask Willie [my husband] questions and he replies, “You should know this by now, you’ve been here for twenty years!” [Laughs]

Have you ever written part of a novel in a plane? No, I never write... Outside of your “cuchitril”? [The place where Isabel writes] No. I take notes, but I never write. When I used to be a journalist I sometimes had to rush because I had to hand something last minute. I remember that when I returned from Easter Island the flight got delayed. I don’t remember what happened, but I had to hand in a report and wrote it in the plane. There were obviously no laptops at the time. Writing in the plane meant taking out a typewriter, using carbon paper... [laughs] that was it.
Do you think that because of this you and/or the rest of writers write differently? There are writers, including young ones, who still write by hand because the hand’s rhythm works accordingly to thought. One thinks and writes more or less at the same time. The computer works much faster with the fingers than the mind, you then commit more errors and do not think, and then you have to fix it. I remember that the first book I wrote with a computer was “Eva Luna”. I corrected it so much that when I read it at the end, I did not recognise it as mine. It was stiff, stuck in armour. I didn’t know how to use the medium.
So, you’re always well prepared? Not always [laughs]. Nowadays there are many more options that did not exist before. One thing that happened with the computer is that I lost the way of thinking that I had when I was a journalist; when all this technology did not exist. Before putting the first word you have already organised the material in your head. You know
Are you prepared to sit in your “cuchitril” in nearly two months? I have a story that is starting to form itself. I just finished a novel that is in my translator’s hands; it’s long and of a difficult theme that required a lot of investigation. I feel like writing something lighter and more emotional, not of so much research.

what goes first, what goes in the middle, what goes after that, what is the title, your subtitle; you already organise it before you start writing because you can’t give yourself the luxury of repeating each page a million times. Nowadays, with new technology, you move paragraphs, make changes, edit, and everything is nearly automatic. I have lost that now, I cannot write by hand anymore.

Do you do something special, something different to the other days on the 7th of January? [Isabel always starts writing her novels on the 7th of January since her first book. Starting to write books on this particular day has always brought her luck] I generally have my car filled with books on the 7th of January. Books that I already read during the year or that I won’t read, because I receive thousands. I take them to the hospice to be distributed. I start my day doing that and then I clean and tidy up the place [the “cuchitril”] where I am going to work the following day.

You know Curaçao right? How many times have you been there? Twice. A long time ago when I lived in Venezuela because it’s so near, it was a short flight. It is a lovely trip from Venezuela; a lovely touristic trip.
Do you think that you are going to stay in San Francisco? I am going to stay wherever my family is and my family is here right now. My husband is American, he’s from here, and my son is installed here with my grandchildren. Where would I go?

Does light and time influence your inspiration in writing? No. I can write inside a closet. And I say that I can do it because I have done it. I wrote my first book in the kitchen in Caracas. I used to write in the kitchen on a typewriter at night in the apartment in Caracas after serving dinner and the children watch television. After that, I wrote my second book in a closet. I took everything out of the closet, installed a board and a light and put my typewriter in there. The
Do you miss Venezuela? I miss the happiness, the dancing, the desire to celebrate. Venezuelans are very different to Chileans. Every opportunity is good enough to celebrate, to have a drink, to dance, to eat well;
And any other movie? Daughter of Fortune, we’ll see. Zorro is coming out; I already signed it with Sony. They are the same people who produced the other two Zorros. And will Antonio Banderas play the leading role? I don’t know. I wish! [Laughs] I wish! In which country do you sell more books? I can’t tell you by country, but by language. I sell a lot in Spanish, but not only in Spain, also Latin America. I sell a lot in German, Italian and English of course, because I live here and it’s a large market. I frankly don’t know why in Germany. Before finishing this interview, could you sign some books for me? Of course!

I take everything out that has nothing to do with the book I am going to write. So when the next day arrives, I already feel that the space is prepared, waiting for me. I arrive early, light up a candle, meditate for a bit, sometimes I burn sage or any of those things, more so to make time than for anything else. Not because I think that I might attract spirits but because it allows me to separate myself from the noise outside, all activities, Christmas, the New Year, of all the things I have done and stay behind. I find silence and solitude inside myself for the book.
Is Eva Luna going to be adapted to screenplay? I’m not sure.

Viajando con Isabel Allende Gracias a la suerte, la persistencia y las ganas de visitar San Francisco, tuve el placer de conocer a una de las mejores escritoras que el mundo literario haya producido. Había quedado con Isabel Allende en el San Francisco Jewish Community Center donde más tarde, esa misma noche, iba a compartir sus experiencias e historias con un auditórium repleto de una multitud cosmopolita. Quise entrevistarla con temas inusuales. Mucha gente ya sabe quién es Isabel Allende y han leído sus libros; pero muy pocos conocen sus viajes. Y con viajes me refiero a inspiración, trabajo, temas, y a Isabel Allende como pasajera.

sabel, los viajes son su fuente de inspiración? En parte, en parte... He viajado mucho en la vida. Mi madre se casó primero con un diplomático, yo soy hija de un diplomático, y después de que se separó de mi padre se casó con otro [diplomático]. Así que empecé a viajar como a los diez años y viajé toda mi infancia y mi juventud. Después llegó el golpe militar [en Chile] de 1973, y me exilié en Venezuela. Mis libros se publican en muchas lenguas. Y cada editor siempre quiere que vaya a ayudar en la promoción, con cada libro, en cada país, lo cual es imposible por supuesto; pero me toca viajar mucho. Una vez al año, por lo menos, hacemos un viaje con la familia, un viaje privado, que no tiene que ver con el trabajo, a algún lugar remoto o a un lugar donde normalmente no iría. Por ejemplo: un safari en África, a los Galápagos, las Amazonas… cosas de ese tipo.

donde he estado, porque cuando voy de vuelta a Chile también me siento extranjera. No he vivido allí en treinta años. Entonces cuando voy estoy feliz una semana y después empiezo a ver que no pertenezco tampoco ahí, que no calzo bien. Entonces esa sensación de marginalidad, de que uno es extranjero en todas partes, a mi me sirve mucho para ver las cosas desde un ángulo diferente. Como lo ve uno siempre cuando está en otro país. Si yo voy, digamos a la India, yo no veo las cosas como una persona que vive allí. ¡Para mí todo es fascinante! ¡Todo es diferente! Tengo un millón de preguntas que la gente que vive en el lugar no se las hace. Incluso en Estados Unidos, llevo veinte años aquí, estoy casada con un americano y de todas maneras todo me parece extranjero. Siempre que le hago preguntas a Willie [mi esposo] me dice, “¡Ya llevas veinte años aquí, ya podrías saber esto!” (Risas) ¿Usted ha escrito parte de una novela en un avión? Llego temprano, enciendo la vela, medito un rato, a veces prendo salvia o cualquier cosa de esas, más por hacer tiempo que otra cosa, no porque yo crea que vaya atraer espíritus ni nada de eso, si no porque me da tiempo de separarme del ruido de afuera, de toda la actividad, de la Pascua, del Año Nuevo, de todas las cosas que he hecho y van quedando atrás. Dentro de mí encuentro el silencio y la soledad necesaria para el libro.
¿O sea que usted está siempre muy bien preparada? No siempre (risas). Ahora hay muchas facilidades que no había antes. Una cosa que ocurrió con la computadora es que perdí esa manera de pensar que tenía cuando era periodista y no existía toda esta tecnología. Y es que tú, antes de poner la primera palabra, ya has organizado el material en tu cabeza. Ya sabes que va primero, que va en el medio, que va después, cual es tu titulo, tu subtitulo; ya lo organizas antes de escribirlo porque no puedes darte el lujo de volver a repetir cada pagina un millón de veces. Ahora, con la nueva tecnología, tú mueves párrafos, cambias, editas y todo se hace casi automáticamente. Eso ya lo he perdido, ya no puedo escribir a mano.

De manera que sé que puedo escribir en cualquier parte. Tengo la fortuna de que el espacio donde escribo ahora es muy lindo; porque si miro por la ventana veo la bahía, una cosa que normalmente no hago. ¿Usted conoce Curaçao verdad? ¿Cuantas veces ha estado? Dos veces. Hace mucho tiempo cuando vivía en Venezuela porque queda muy cerca. Era una viaje muy corto y [Curaçao] es muy lindo como paseo desde Venezuela; un viaje turístico muy lindo. ¿Usted echa de menos Venezuela? Echo de menos la alegría, el baile, la ganas de celebrar. Los venezolanos son muy diferentes de los chilenos. Cualquier oportunidad es buena para celebrar, para tomar un trago, para bailar, para comer rico, incluso cuando las cosas están muy mal y la gente no hace nada más que hablar de política. Papiamentu stands alone in the Caribbean; By: Dr. William W. Megenney
or Does It?
Let us begin this discussion by asking how the Papiamentu language has survived on the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao), especially since these islands are so close to Spanish-speaking Venezuela. The answer is somewhat involved and complicated, so let us first look briefly at the history of this part of the Netherlands Antilles to see what clues can be gleaned from an historical approach.
S
ailing to the West Indies
The ABC islands were discovered in 1499 by Spaniards under the leadership of Alonso de Ojeda. Once the Dutch had entered the Atlantic slave trade by way of the West India Company (WIC), they soon became the dominant power in this lucrative activity, replacing the Portuguese. By1640 they were well on their way to turning Curaçao into a major trans-shipment port for African slaves. As such, most of the Africans arriving here presumably would have been speaking their own individual sub-Saharan languages, although it is possible that some may have spoken the Portuguese-based trade language (referred to as caçanje or the Reconnaissance language, which was used along the West coast of Africa. Yet, since most of these slaves were transferred to other parts of Latin America, there would not have been a common sub-Saharan language, or caçanje, to initially stay there long enough to take hold and develop. However, by the 1650s, there were supposedly house slaves on Curaçao, who no doubt spoke something other than
Dutch. Also, since Dutch was never imposed on the slave population, due to the linguistic indifference of these European people, any language spoken by the slaves would have prospered in its own right. But what would this language have been? Obviously, none of the various and sundry African languages survived, otherwise we would be hearing Wolof or Fulani, or perhaps Temne, being spoken on the ABC islands today. Within this scenario it is important to stress the role of the so-called yayas or ‘black nannies’, who, as household servants, virtually raised the children bred on the island, both those of Dutch couples and those of the (mostly) Dutch men with black or mulatto girls. These yayas played an extremely important part in spreading the creole language they used among these children, since the latter spent most of their time with the former in relaxed environments where linguistic diffusion works at its best.
Portuguese influence The Papiamentu language that we hear today probably had its beginnings during the seventeenth century, when Portuguesespeaking Dutch from Brazil were arriving with their slaves after having been expelled from that country by the Portuguese in 1654 (along with many Portuguese-speaking Jews and their slaves). This particular brand of popular Brazilian Portuguese (PBP) would have mixed with the caçanje already being used on the islands to form yet a third kind of Portuguesebased creole which would subsequently mix with Spanish, modern Dutch, Ladino (Judeo- Spanish), and Hebrew (from Ladino or independently?).
Papiamentu and the Catholic Church In any event, being a Portuguese-based language has placed Papiamentu apart from other languages spoken in the Caribbean and given it a degree of isolationism,

the fact that native Papiamentu speakers, who are predominantly Catholic, have continued to worship in Papiamentu with the aid of printed materials in their own language. We can contrast this to the use of Dutch as the official language in the schools and in government, which, of course, snubbed Papiamentu as an officially recognized language. [Currently, in March 2009, Papiamentu is taught in schools and even though Papiamentu is now recognized as an official language, the government continues their official work in Dutch, similarly to its laws.]
Hispanization But what about the other elements present in Papiamentu? This language, the name of which stems from the Portuguese verb ‘papiar ‘ to chatter,’ has always been considered the language of the slaves and as such has been a sort of “catch-all” linguistic stew. If we follow the school of thought that situates the bulk of the formation of Papiamentu in the seventeenth century, we may notice several things: that there may be elements of seventeenth century Castilian, Catalan, Galician, and other Peninsular dialects present in this creole, as well as seventeenth-century Portuguese, the above mentioned Portuguesebased West African creole, and the PBP [popular Brazilian Portuguese} spoken by the Jews who migrated to the Netherlands Antilles. As Anderson has stated [in Nativization and hispanization in the Papiamentu of Curaçao, N.A.: A Sociolinguistic Study of Variation, (1974)] “Antoine J. Maduro implies that Galician, Catalan or various peninsular Spanish dialect

even more than that of the French-based creoles, which, after all, are spoken in various places within the Caribbean, as are English-based creoles, albeit with sociolinguistic continua that differ from one to another. Even though Spanish has been creeping into Papiamentu over the centuries, it has not, by any means, “gone Spanish,” so to say, but rather has kept many of its distinguishing characteristics, including its unique pronunciation and grammatical constructions (with differences here even between the Papiamentu of Curaçao and Bonaire on the one hand, and Aruba, on the other!). Even though Spanish- speaking Catholic priests came in from the northern coast of South America, “the historical record on the ABC islands shows that the Catholic Church took an active interest in ministering to the spiritual needs of the slaves and bettering their conditions...,”and they did this in Papiamentu. Fouse writes, [in The Story of Papiamentu. A Study in Slavery and Language (2002)] “It is interesting to note that in 1769, the Jesuit priest Rodier sent a letter to the Dutch Parliament in which he mentioned the need for priests to know Papiamentu (de papiament taal).” It was the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church that began printing materials in Papiamentu for schools and so helped to maintain the use of what had been up to that point in time only an oral language. There is no doubt that today’s Papiamentu owes the slowing of its grammatical changes, in part, to
forms were borrowed intact into Papiamentu.” This would decrease the influence of Portuguese coming from the Peninsula, since forms now attributed to Portuguese would ultimately be from some other dialect. This may be true, given the fact that many of the sailors on board the slave ships came from all over the Iberian Peninsula. Be all this as it may, the fact is that from early on (16th century), Papiamentu, in some form, was being spoken by slaves, colonists, slave traders, and even priests, as a language with multiple uses (e.g., basic communication between slaves, slaves and masters, slaves and shippers, and religious purposes), yet within a very restricted geographical area, thus contributing to the growing micro-divisions of the Caribbean, in this instance linguistically and socially. Today’s Papiamentu exists along a continuum of what is referred to as “nativization and denativization,” depending on how far from or close to Spanish a particular kind of Papiamentu happens to be. Listening to the radio or TV in Papiamentu gives the impression that one is perhaps hearing some form of older Spanish rather than a language which is genetically related to but different from its Caribbean counterpart. Thus, we may safely say that when speaking of “standing alone” in the Caribbean, we are referring to the basilectal end of this continuum which, when observed, gives the impression of a language quite far removed from even the most “eroded” versions of Spanish. This is undoubtedly due to the historical intervention of children in the development of Papiamentu who, after learning the language from the

yayas, were slow to change it, “thus helping its features become more and more entrenched” [according to Salikoko Mulwene in The Ecology of Language Evolution, (2001).] Children, then, must have slowed down any restructuring process that would have taken place through contact with other vernaculars. The closest thing we may have today to the original form of this children’s version of Papiamentu is a smattering of examples of what is known as Guene, a “secret” dialect of Papiamentu that was originally a group of AfroPortuguesedialects. Thus, although it is true that the basilectal Papiamentu we have today is not the same as the result of the initial mixing that may have taken place between the Spanish conquistadores and the Caiquetío Indians, beginning in 1499, there is probably not as much mixing of creole structures as would have happened if the ABC islands had not remained so isolated from other colonial settlements.

Sephardic “brand” One important aspect of Papiamentu that keeps it apart and different from other Caribbean creole languages is the amount of Hebrew that has become an integral part of its lexicon. The Jews who were originally from the Iberian Peninsula (Sephardimin Hebrew) spoke Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), which was a mixture of old Castilian, old Portuguese, Hebrew and some Arabic. The Sephardic Jews who wound up in Brazil, later in the Netherlands, and then the Netherlands Antilles (mostly Curaçao), spoke some form of PBP, probably mixed with their own Ladino language, indeed a true potpourri. Although it is true that this Sephardic “brand” of Papiamentu is somewhat different from other sociolects spoken on Curaçao, some of the words and expressions of Hebrew origin have filtered into these sociolects and contributed to the separateness of Papiamentu as a whole. ■

de ellos pudieran hablar el lenguaje comercial portugués conocido como el caçanje, o lenguaje del reconocimiento, que hablaban en la costa oeste de África. Ya que estos esclavos fueron transferidos a diferentes partes de América Latina, no es posible que hayan tenido un lenguaje sub-Sahariano en común, o el caçanje, para que inicialmente se quedaran aquí suficientemente tiempo para absorber y desarrollar una lengua. Sin embargo, alrededor de 1650, supuestamente había esclavos en casas de Curaçao que hablaban otro lenguaje que no era el holandés, ya que el holandés nunca fue impuesto a la comunidad de esclavos, tal vez debido a la indiferencia de los europeos, cualquier lengua hablado por los esclavos hubiera prosperado por propio derecho. ¿Pero qué lenguaje pudo haber sido? Influencia Portuguesa El Papiamentu que escuchamos hoy en día probablemente se originó a principios del siglo XVII, cuando los holandeses de Brasil que hablaban portugués llegaron con sus esclavos después de haber sido expulsados por los portugueses en 1654 (junto a muchos judíos que hablaban portugués y sus esclavos). Este particular tipo de portugués brasileño popular se mezcló con el caçanje ya usado en las islas para crear un tercer tipo de lengua criolla basada en el portugués que posteriormente se mezclaría con el español, el holandés moderno, el ladino (español judío), y el hebreo (¿proveniente del ladino o el mismo?).
La iglesia Católica y el Papiamentu De todas formas, el hecho de que el Papiamentu es una lengua basada en el portugués, ha
causado una separación de la misma de las otras lenguas hablados en el Caribe, dándole un cierto grado de aislacionismo. Más aun que las de las lenguas criollas basadas en el idioma francés, que después de todo son habladas en varios lugares del Caribe, igual a las lenguas criollas basadas en idioma inglés, aunque tengan una evolución sociolingüística diferente entre unas y otras. Aunque la lengua española ha ido adentrándose en el Papiamentu durante siglos, el Papiamentu no se ha españolizado, sino más bien ha mantenido sus características distintivas, incluyendo sus pronunciaciones
oficialmente reconocida. [Actualmente, en marzo del 2009, el Papiamentu es enseñado en las escuelas, y aunque es reconocido hoy en día como lenguaje oficial, el gobierno continúa utilizando el holandés en tanto su trabajo como sus leyes.]
Hispanización
...el Papiamentu no se ha españolizado... únicas y sus construcciones gramaticales (¡hasta con diferencias entre el Papiamentu de Curaçao y de Bonaire por un lado y el Papiamentu de Aruba por el otro!) Aunque llegaron Sacerdotes católicos de habla-hispana de la costa norte de América del Sur, “el archivo histórico de las islas ABC muestra que la iglesia católica tuvo mucho interés en atender las necesidades espirituales de los esclavos y en mejorar sus condiciones…,” y esto lo hacían en Papiamentu. Fouse escribe, (en The Story of Papiamentu. A Study in Slavery and Language 2002) “Es interesante notar que en 1769, el sacerdote Jesuita Rodier envió una carta al parlamento holandés, mencionando la necesidad de que los sacerdotes conocieran el Papiamentu (de papiament taal).” Fue la Orden de los Dominicos de la Iglesia Católica que comenzó a imprimir materiales en Papiamentu para las escuelas y así ayudar a mantener el uso de lo que hasta aquel momento nada más fue un lenguaje oral. ¿Y qué ocurre con los otros elementos presentes en el Papiamentu? Esta lengua, cuyo nombre proviene del verbo portugués papiar ‘charlar,’ siempre ha sido considerada la lengua de los esclavos y por lo tanto ha sido un absorbente estofado lingüístico. Si tomamos en cuenta la corriente de opinión que sitúa la masa de la formación del Papiamentu en el siglo XVII, podemos observar varias cosas: que pueden haber elementos del castellano, catalán, gallego y otros dialectos peninsulares del siglo XVII presentes en esta lengua criolla, así como el portugués del siglo XVII basado en la lengua criolla del oeste de África y el PBP [popular Brazilian Portuguese (el portugués brasileño popular)] hablado por los judíos que migraron a la Antillas Holandesas. Como Anderson expuso [en Nativaization and hispanization in the Papiamentu of Curaçao, N.A.: A Sociolinguistic Study of Variation, (1974)] “Antoine J. Maduro insinúa que el gallego, el catalán o varias formas de dialectos españoles fueron integrados directamente intactos en el Papiamentu.” Esto reduciría la influencia del portugués llegado de la península, ya que formas ahora atribuidas al portugués provendrían en última instancia de otro dialecto. Aunque es verdad que el Papiamentu basilectal que tenemos hoy en día no es igual al resultado de las mezclas iniciales que pudieron haber ocurrido entre los conquistadores españoles y los indios caiquetíos, en el comienzo de 1499, es probable que no hubiera habido tanta mezcla de las estructuras criollas si las islas ABC no se hubiesen quedado tan aisladas de otras colonizaciones.

Siendo un lenguaje con variadas funciones (por ejemplo: comunicación básica entre esclavos, esclavos y amos, esclavos y traficantes y motivos religiosos), en un área geográficamente muy restringida, el Papiamentu contribuyó lingüística y socialmente a las crecientes micro-divisiones del Caribe. El Papiamentu de hoy en día se encuentra junto a una continuación que es referida como “nativización y denativización,” dependiendo del nivel de igualdad entre el lenguaje español y el particular tipo de Papiamentu. Escuchar la radio o la televisión en Papiamentu da la impresión de que se está oyendo un tipo de español antiguo en vez de un lenguaje que es genéticamente relacionado pero diferente a su equivalente en el Caribe. De este modo podemos afirmar que cuando hablamos de la “independencia” en el Caribe, estamos refiriéndonos al lado basilectal final de este continuo, el cual, cuando observado, da la impresión de que es un lenguaje muy lejano a las demás versiones de la lengua española existentes. Esto es indudablemente debido a las intervenciones de los niños en el desarrollo del Papiamentu en el pasado quienes, después de aprender el lenguaje de las yayas, eran lentos en cambiarlo, “y por consiguiente ayudando más y más a establecer sus características” (de acuerdo con Salikoko Mulwene en The Ecology of Language Evolution, (2001).) Los niños, entonces, ralentizaron el proceso de reestructuración que hubiera tomado lugar por contacto con otras lenguas vernáculas. Lo más similar que tenemos en la actualidad a esta versión de Papiamentu de niños es un conocimiento superficial de ejemplos, conocido como el Guene, un dialecto secreto del Papiamentu que fue originalmente un grupo de dialectos afro-portugueses.
Un aspecto importante del Papiamentu que lo mantiene separado y diferente de las otras lenguas criollas caribeñas es la cantidad de hebreo que se integró en su léxico. Los judíos que inicialmente formaban parte de la península ibérica (hebreo Sephardimin) hablaban el ladino (judío-español), que era una mezcla de castellano, portugués antiguo, hebreo y un poco de árabe. Our weekend to Miami with InselAir

riday, the 21st of November of 2008 was a historic day for InselAir. We were invited to be present on this flight. We wouldn’t miss this for anything in the world! Leaving Hato International Airport in the morning to be baptized (our plane, not us!) by water from fire trucks just after noon, a more festive welcome could not have been expected. Miami´s airport officials received us all at the Military Lounge with delicious appetizers, drinks, and congratulatory speeches. After renting our car we dropped our suitcases at our hotel and got ready for a memorable night at “El Conciertazo”. Alejandro Sanz, Chayanne, Marco Antonio Solis, and Shakira, who handed out a prize on stage, filled the night with their melodies and lyrics. Though tired from this hectic day, we still enjoyed the privilege of some late night shopping. That´s what we did for almost the rest of the following day until it was time to head out to the Netherlands Antilles Consul´s house, Xavier Prens, where he, his colleagues, the Dutch consul, and other fellow Curaçaoans living in Miami joined us for a pleasantly memorable night. Though short but efficient we flew back to Curacao the next day, leaving us with unforgettable memories, new friends and some of us, with a full suitcase!

Nuestro fin de semana a Miami con InselAir

l viernes, 21 de Noviembre del 2008 fue un día histórico para InselAir. Nos invitaron para el vuelo inaugural y obviamente ¡nos apuntamos enseguida! Saliendo del Aeropuerto Internacional de Hato por la mañana y el avión siendo bautizado por el agua de los bomberos de Miami, justo después del mediodía, un recibimiento más festivo no se pudo haber esperado. Directivos del aeropuerto de Miami nos recibieron a todos en el Military Lounge con un delicioso aperitivo, refrescos, y con discursos felicitando a InselAir. Después de alquilar nuestro coche, dejamos nuestro equipaje en el hotel y nos preparamos para una memorable noche en ‘El Conciertazo’. Alejandro Sanz, Chayanne, Marco Antonio Solís, Carlos Vives y Shakira, quien entregó un premio en el escenario, llenaron la noche con sus canciones. Aunque cansadas de tanto trajín, aun disfrutamos de unas compras a medianoche. Eso fue lo que hicimos el resto del día siguiente hasta que era hora de irnos a casa del Cónsul de las Antillas Holandesas, Xavier Prens, donde él, sus colegas, la Cónsul del Holanda, y otros Curasoleños viviendo en Miami nos acompañaron en una noche memorable. Aunque corto pero eficiente, volamos de vuelta a Curaçao al día siguiente dejándonos con memorias inolvidables, nuevos amigos y, para algunas de nosotras, ¡con una maleta llena!
