bon biní/welcome At the start of our Airline “Insel Air International” in august 2006, the management’s biggest concern was how to recruit experienced people in the shortest time. Doing our utmost, we succeeded in bringing home experienced captains and co-pilots that were working abroad and who took the challenge to pursue a new career in a new airline hoping their choice would later appear to be a good one. Three and a half years later it has been proven to be the case. It is amazing how much we have learned in these past years! We have learned that the level of people’s expectations has a great deal to do with the results they achieve. Our cockpit staff is using

These young people are the real Eagles that flourish when they are free to fly the adagium “if you don’t seek perfection, you can never reach excellence “ especially in high skilled labour such as flying. It is this drive that urged them, together with the management to adapt a new policy and strategy, instead of recruiting pilots from other companies. We decided that it would be better to start our own aviation school and instruct local talents to become pilots in our company. This way the reaching of the level of excellence remains in our own hands. It is a fact that no individual can reach the level of “practice perfection” alone. It takes ferocious concentration and an unyielding commitment to continuous improvement. That means day-to-day coaching- setting clear goals, letting people perform, observing, and then praising progress or redirecting efforts. Our instructors act according to the above mentioned adagium, seeking perfection every day again while teaching trainees the theoretical and practical skills of flying. At this very moment Insel Air has delivered 5 captains and 5 co-pilots for their fleet of MD82/83 and 5 captains and 4 co-pilots for their embraer-Bandeirante Aircraft. Quite an achievement in our three and a half years of existence. Now that these new captains and co-pilots are free to fly we see them flourish, take up the challenge and become instructors at Insel Air International, in order to in due time continue this great task and replace those instructors who were their examples. In their turn they are seeking perfection in order to reach excellence with new classes of captains and co-pilots in the years to come. These young people are the real Eagles that flourish when they are free to fly.

En agosto de 2006, al inicio de nuestra aerolínea “Insel Air International”, la preocupación mayor de la gerencia era cómo contratar a personas con experiencia en el menor tiempo posible. Con mucho empeño, conseguimos traer a bordo a experimentados pilotos y copilotos que trabajaban en el extranjero y que aceptaron el reto de ir tras una nueva carrera en una compañía aérea recién establecida, confiando en que no se arrepentirían un día de su elección. Ahora, tres años y medio más tarde, se ven vindicados. ¡Es increíble cuánto hemos aprendido en estos últimos años! Por ejemplo, aprendimos que existe una correlación directa entre las

Resulta cierto más que todo al tratarse de un ramo tan exigente como es el vuelo de aeronaves. Es ése ímpetu lo que los mueve a ellos y a la gerencia a adoptar nuevas políticas y estrategias. En lugar de simplemente contratar pilotos de otras compañías, decidimos que sería mejor empezar nuestra propia escuela de aviación e instruir a talentos locales para que ellos se conviertan un día en pilotos en nuestra empresa. De esta manera, queda en nuestras propias manos esa búsqueda de la excelencia. Es un hecho que por sí solo ningún individuo es capaz de alcanzar tal nivel de “perfección en la práctica”. Se requiere fiera concentración y un inquebrantable compromiso con la mejora continua. Significa ir dando orientación día a día, establecer objetivos bien definidos, dar a la gente el espacio que necesitan para desenvolverse, observar, y luego elogiar el progreso o ajustar la manera en que se dirigen los esfuerzos. Nuestros instructores trabajan en harmonía con el adagio mencionado, buscando día a día la perfección mientras transmiten a sus alumnos los conocimientos teóricos y prácticos del vuelo. Insel Air ya ha producido cinco capitanes y cinco copilotos para su flota de MD82/83, y cinco capitanes y cuatro copilotos para sus aeronaves Embraer-Bandeirante. Nada mal para estos primeros tres años y medio de existencia. Ahora que estos nuevos capitanes y co-pilotos vuelan en libertad, los vemos florecer, medrar, asumir el reto, convirtiéndose en instructores de Insel Air International ellos mismos para, en el momento oportuno, continuar con la gran tarea de sustituir a los instructores que sirvieron de ejemplo a ellos. Ellos a su vez, buscan la perfección en pos de la excelencia con nuevas las clases de pilotos y copilotos de los años venideros. Estos jóvenes son verdaderas águilas que medran al tener libertad de volar.

¿Por qué será que en el Caribe se disfruta mucho más de la música? Tal vez sea por la combinación ideal que se encuentra sólo aquí de un calor al nivel perfecto (proveniente tanto del sol como de la gente) y un ambiente generalmente libre de estrés.
Music as a tropical way of life What is it that makes music so much more enjoyable in the Caribbean? Maybe it’s the perfect combination of just the right amount of warmth (both from the sun and from the people) and the generally stress-free atmosphere. It’s local music with a tropical flavor that has evolved into a way of life. Consider for instance the traditional ‘folk’ rhythm of the Dominican Republic’s bachata. Or the incomparable experience of dancing the merengue under the stars. Then again, maybe it’s the Caribbean’s rich history, a crossroads of cultures, that’s produced this kind of universally enticing music. Anyway, it’s hardly possible to attend a musical event in such settings and not want to at least tap your toes. It’s no surprise therefore, that one music festival after the other is discovering the Caribbean as the perfect setting to branch out with their activities. Bonaire, mostly known as a fantastic location for any kind of water sports, will host the sixth edition of the Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival in May. Many internationally renowned artists will perform on several venues around the island, matched by the island’s own outstanding musicians. Also in May, Aruba’s tenth Annual Soul Beach Music Festival will again present some of the best soul and rhythm & blues artists. ‘Soul Beach’ always attracts many repeat visitors and music lovers from all over the world. It’s an event where music mixes with just the right amount of fun and excitement to create that special experience that is so typically Caribbean. The festival has turned into a lively meeting ground where locals and visitors can experience great music in a lively ambiance. So whether it be mere toe-tapping or all-out dancing the night away, and whether you are dressed in a formal attire or in a bikini or shorts on the beach, the Caribbean musical experience and the relaxed island ambience is guaranteed to be very enjoyable!
Quizá sea la música local con sabor tropical que ya se ha convertido en forma de vivir, como lo es la bachata, ese tradicional ritmo popular de la República Dominicana. ¿O será la incomparable experiencia de bailar merengue bajo las estrellas? ¿O la rica historia del Caribe, encrucijada de culturas que da vida a esta música con atractivo universal? Muchos artistas de renombre internacional darán presentaciones en diversos sitios de la isla acompañados por excelentes músicos locales. Y en ese mismo mes de mayo, el Soul Beach Music Festival anual de Aruba, esta ves en su décima edición, presentará una vez más a algunos de los mejores artistas del soul y el rhythm & blues. 'Soul Beach' siempre trae de vuelta a muchos antiguos visitantes y amantes de la música de todos los rincones del mundo. Es un evento en el que se mezcla la música con diversión y emoción en proporciones exactas, creando así esa experiencia especial tan típica del Caribe. For those seeking an active tropical vacation, along with the chance for plenty of pampering, it’s hard to top the wondrous diversity of offerings found in the Dominican Republic. It’s a destination that truly has something for everyone.
Big Thrills
Hard-core adrenaline junkies head to the north coast and the funky beachside town of Cabarete, which in recent years has claimed an international reputation for some of the best windsurfing and kiteboarding in the world. It’s also home to a number of outfitters who can help with activities like mountain biking and rock climbing. Outfitters in Cabarete also offer day trips to Yacque del Norte, the Dominican Republic’s largest river and one of the few places in the Eastern Caribbean for whitewater rafting. Its Class III to V rapids includes a thrilling 12-foot drop aptly called “Mike Tyson”. And thanks to the fact that it attracts a decidedly younger crowd than the rest of the country, Cabarete boasts a lively nighttime scene, especially on ‘Carretera 5’, the town’s main drag, which is lined with bars and clubs, many of which feature live music till the wee hours.

Eco-travelers are well served by the Dominican Republic with many natural treasures. For birdwatchers, there are more than 300 species that call the island home, and local experts lead trips to popular birding destinations like Jaragua National Park. From January through March, Samana Bay, along the eastern part of the island, offers awesome spectacle of humpback whales passing through on their yearly migration to these warm waters. Tour operators claim nearly a 100 percent success rate in spotting whales during the height of the season. The Dominican Republic is an island of extremes – it claims both the lowest point in the Caribbean (Lake Enriguillo at 144 feet below sea level) and the region’s tallest mountain (Pico Duarte at 10,128 feet.) While climbing Pico Duarte is not for the timid, it is a popular pursuit for many visitors, especially with the assistance of guides and mules. The trip typically takes about three days from the village of La Cienaga just outside Armando Bermudez National Park.
Hit the Beach
More than 1,000 miles of sparkling white beaches rim the Dominican Republic’s coastline. Located just offshore from Bayahibe, Isla Catalina is one of the more popular destinations for beachlovers.

The six-square-mile island also boasts a pristine coral reef for snorkelers and scuba divers. Located in Parque Nacional Del Este, Isla Saona, with its towering palms, azure water and the occasional sand bar at low tide make it one of the Dominican Republic’s most romantic destinations. Just north of Punta Cana, Playa Bavaro is a 30-mile stretch of fluffy white sand lined with numerous resorts, many serving cool, refreshing drinks to beachgoers. And Playa Dominicus is popular with scuba divers who enjoy quick and easy access to a coral reef just offshore.
Hit the Links ‘Teeth of Dog’
The Dominican Republic ranks as the Caribbean’s top golfing destination with more than 20 courses featuring oceanfront fairways. The highest concentration of courses is in the east part of the island at places like Casa del Campo, home to the legendary Pete Dye- designed “Teeth of the Dog” course, which is consistently ranked among the top in the world. Casa del Campo features two other courses, “Dye Fore” and “Links” also designed by Dye. The Punta Cana Resort and Club features two courses designed by P.B. Dye, along with the Tom Fazio-designed “Corales” course and a fourth course, “Hacienda,” scheduled to open in the near future. And at Cap Cana, the Jack Nicklaus-designed “Punta Espada” course features eight holes directly on the water.

There is no shortage of great souvenirs to bring back from the Dominican Republic. In addition to its famous cigars, the island is justly proud of its local rum, including Bermudez, Brugal and Barcelo. Another popular concoction worthy as a gift, is Mamajuana. Said to be a liquid cure-all, it’s made from a variety of recipes but usually includes a blend of natural herbs, spices, tree leaves and tree stems mixed with honey, molasses, lemon juice and rum. For those with a taste for semi-precious stones, amber from the Dominican Republic is some of the prized in the world and ranges in a spectrum of colors from yellow to deep red and smoky greens and blues. The Dominican Republic is also the only place in the world where the opaque blue gem known as larimar can be found. The result of ancient volcanic activity, the stone also comes in shades of brown, grey or red and is often the centerpiece of jewelry from local artisans.
Where Music is a Way of Life
For sheer pervasiveness of song and dance - music as a way of life - the Dominican Republic pulses to a soundtrack all its own. When it comes to hearing traditional music played in its traditional context, no place matches the Dominican Republic birthplace of merengue and bachata. Plus innumerable variations and cross-pollinations of the two. The Dominican Republic seems to sprout great musicians like it does great baseball players, and it celebrates both with unbridled passion.

In Santo Domingo it’s hard to find a telephone pole or street sign that isn’t plastered with posters for upcoming performances or festivals. It’s also home to one of the liveliest nightclubs in the Caribbean, Guacara Taina, a sprawling, multi-level complex built inside a cave in the southwestern part of the city. “But it’s not just a city thing,” says David Wayne, co-founder of IASO Records, a New York-based world-music label with a particular emphasis on music from the Caribbean. “You can be driving down a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and come across a parada (roadside bar) where a band is playing and a hundred cars are parked outside.” For fans of bachata, the plaintive, so-called “country-western music” of the Dominican Republic, the place to hear it is Santiago, the islands second largest city. Marked by its guitardriven melodies and lyrics about relationships and hard times, bachata originated in the 1960s and found its earliest popularity among the poor. Santiago is also the cradle of merengue typico, played by a threepiece band consisting of the accordion-like melodeon, tambora (doubleheaded drum) and guira (a cylindrical percussive instrument). The more expansive form of merengue, which can include the saxophone, piano, flute and even violins, boasts two annual showcases, at the Santo Domingo Merengue Festival in July and in October at the Puerto Plata Merengue Festival along the north coast.
Welcome to the cigar world
While Cuba steals the cigar spotlight, the Dominican Republic owns the record book – it is the largest producer of cigars in the world. A drive through the central countryside, in the Santiago and Cibao Valley regions, will lead visitors through the heart of the country’s 600,000 acres of tobacco plants. They produce cigars with a wide variety of colors, aromas and price tags – any of which make great souvenirs. Among the more popular and well known brands are Arturo Fuente, La Aurora, Cojimar, Romeo y Julieta and the famous Montecristo, which originated in Cuba but has been produced in the Dominican Republic since 1995. For those wanting an up close look at the cigar making process, a number of factories offer tours. Most are located in Santiago and Tamboril. They include Grupo León Jimenes Tobacco Company, Fabrica Anilo de Oro and Tabacalera Jacagua, all of which offer visitors a free, freshly made cigar at the end of the tour. Also in Santiago is the Museo del Tabaco, which is housed in an old Victorian tobacco warehouse. This distinctive museum displays a collection of authentic tools, unique art and old photographs related to the tobacco industry. Exhibits cover crop usage dating back to the Taino times, and there is a mock cigar room where guests can observe how some of the finest tobacco in the world is processed and rolled.

Donde la música es una forma de vivir Para aquellos que buscan unas vacaciones tropicales activas con la posibilidad de ser mimados en grande, es difícil encontrar otro destino que sobrepase la maravillosa diversidad que ofrece República Dominicana. Realmente tiene algo para cada gusto.
Emociones a granel
Los adictos empedernidos a la adrenalina se dirigen a la costa norte y a Cabarete, un vistoso pueblito playero que en los últimos años se ha ganado fama internacional por ser escenario de windsurfing y kiteboarding a un nivel raramente igualado en el mundo. Es también hogar de numerosos proveedores de equipo que pueden ofrecerle justo lo que requiera para actividades como el ciclismo de montaña y la escalada en roca. Los proveedores cabareteños también ofrecen excursiones de un día a Yacque del Norte, el río más grande de la República Dominicana y uno de los pocos lugares en el Caribe Oriental donde se puede practicar el rafting. Sus rápidos de clase III al V incluyen una pavorosa caída de tres metros y medio, acertadamente llamada la “Mike Tyson”. Y gracias a que atrae a un público decididamente más joven que el resto del país, Cabarete cuenta con una animada vida nocturna, especialmente en la Carretera 5, la calle principal de la ciudad, bordeada de bares y clubes, en muchos de los cuales se puede disfrutar de música en vivo hasta muy entrada la madrugada.
Cercano a la naturaleza
Los muchos tesoros naturales la República Dominicana satisfacen bien a los eco-turistas. Para los observadores de aves, hay más de 300 especies que consideran a la isla su casa, y hay expertos locales que sirven de guía en viajes a los más populares destinos de observación de aves, como el Parque Nacional Jaragua. De enero a marzo, la Bahía de Samaná, en la parte oriental de la isla, es escenario del impresionante espectáculo de las ballenas jorobadas que hacen su migración anual a estas cálidas aguas. Los operadores turísticos afirman tener casi un 100 por ciento de éxito en la detección de ballenas durante el período de mayor actividad de la temporada. La República Dominicana es una isla de extremos. Ahí se encuentran tanto el punto de menor elevación en el Caribe (el lago Enriquillo, a 44 metros bajo el nivel del mar) como la montaña más alta de la región (el Pico Duarte, a 3087 m de elevación). al Pico Duarte no es para los no tan aventureros, es un ejercicio popular entre muchos visitantes, sobre todo con la ayuda de guías y mulas. El viaje, partiendo de la aldea la Ciénaga, justo en las afueras del Parque Nacional Armando Bermúdez, suele durar unos tres días.
¡A la playa se ha dicho!
La costa dominicana está bordeada por más de 600 kilómetros de playas de blanca y brillante arena. Isla Catalina, situada cerca de la costa de Bayahibe, es uno de los destinos más populares entre los amantes de la playa. La isla, de quince kilómetros cuadrados, también cuenta con un inmaculado arrecife de coral que interesará a los practicantes del snorkeling y el buceo. Ubicada en el Parque Nacional del Este, la Isla Saona, con sus altas palmeras, aguas azuladas y algunos bancos de arena que se ven en marea baja, hacen de ella uno de los destinos más románticos de República Dominicana. La Playa Bávaro, justo al norte de Punta Cana, es un tramo de unos 45 kilómetros de suave arena blanca, bordeada de numerosos resorts, que por lo general sirven bebidas frescas y refrescantes a los bañistas. Y la playa Dominicus es popular entre los buzos a los que les gusta el acceso rápido y fácil a un arrecife de coral cerca de la costa.

La República Dominicana figura como el principal destino de golf en el Caribe, con sus más de 20 campos con malecones. La mayor concentración de campos de golf se da en la parte oriental de la isla, en lugares como Casa de Campo, lugar del legendario campo Teeth of the Dog (Dientes del perro), diseñado por Pete Dye, que se clasifica constantemente entre las mejores del mundo. Casa de Campo cuenta con otros dos campos de golf, Dye Fore y Links, también diseñados por Dye. El Punta Cana Resort & Club cuenta con dos campos diseñados por P.B. Dye, además del campo Corales, diseñado por Tom Fazio, y un cuarto llamado Hacienda, que se inaugurará próximamente. No faltan los excelentes artículos de recuerdo para traerse de vuelta al visitar República Dominicana. En vez de recurrir a los habituales cigarros, el visitante hace bien en percatarse de que la isla se enorgullece - con mucha razón - de sus rones locales, incluso el Bermudez, el Brugal y el Barceló. Un brebaje popular, que también sirve de buen regalo es la Mamajuana. Se dice que es un elixir hecho a partir de varias recetas, pero que por lo general incluye una mezcla de hierbas naturales, especias, hojas de árboles y troncos de árboles mezclados con miel, melaza, jugo de limón y ron. Y los que les atrae el brillo de las piedras semipreciosas deberían saber que el ámbar de la República Dominicana figura

entre los más preciados del mundo y que se encuentra en una gama de colores que varían del amarillo al rojo sangre, el verde gris y el azul. República Dominicana es además el único lugar en el mundo donde se encuentra la gema de color azul opaco conocida como larimar. Donde la música es una forma de vivir
La absoluta omnipresencia del canto y el baile en la República Dominicana hace que lata a un ritmo muy propio—adoptando la música como forma de vivir. Si se trata de oír música tradicional en su contexto original, no hay lugar que se compare a la R.D. República Dominicana, cuna del merengue y la bachata y de innumerables variantes e híbridos de las mismas, parece generar músicos y jugadores de beisbol famosos con igual facilidad, y agasajándolos a ambos con igual desenfreno. En Santo Domingo, cuesta encontrar un poste de teléfono o letrero público que no esté plasmado con un cartel que anuncie un show o festival. También es ahí donde se encuentra uno de los clubes nocturnos más animados del Caribe, el Guacara Taina, un extenso complejo multi-nivel construido dentro de una cueva en la parte suroeste de la ciudad. “Pero no es sólo en la ciudad,” dice David Wayne, cofundador de IASO Records, una disquera internacional con sede en Nueva York que se concentra especialmente en la música caribeña. “Podría uno estar manejando por un camino de tierra quién sabe dónde y encontrarse con una parada (un bar de carretera) con banda tocando y como cien automóviles estacionados afuera.” Para los fanáticos de la bachata, a la que se ha llamado la versión “country-western” de la música dominicana y anteriormente “música de amargados”, el lugar ideal en donde oírla es Santiago, la segunda ciudad más grande del país. La bachata, marcada por sus melodías de guitarra y letras que tratan sobre las relaciones y tiempos difíciles, se originó en la década de 1960 y alcanzó popularidad primero entre los de la clase pobre.Santiago es también cuna del merengue típico, interpretado por bandas de tres con melodeón (afín al acordeón), tambora y guira. Las variedades más elaboradas del merengue, en las que se pueden oír saxofones, pianos, flautas y hasta violines, cuenta con no menos de dos festivales en su honor, el Festival del Merengue de Santo Domingo en julio y en la costa norte el Festival del Merengue de Puerto Plata en octubre. Dice Wayne: “Hasta los que no han sido dotados con el don del baile se curan visitando República Dominicana.”

Este particular museo expone una colección de auténticas herramientas, arte única y viejas fotografías relacionadas con la industria tabacalera. Las exposiciones muestran el uso de cultivos que se remontan a los tiempos de los Taínos, y el museo cuenta, además, con un simulacro de un cuarto de tabaco donde los invitados pueden observar cómo se procesa y se lía el mejor tabaco del mundo.

There is one basic rule of fashion that anyone and everyone can follow. It’s simple, according to fashion experts, and it costs nothing but can save you a million stares. This rule has been around since the renaissance and still inspires us today. Most women worship a mirror and must look at it several times before leaving the house. Some parade in front of it in several outfits before stepping into the big, busy world. But sometimes it can go very wrong – a plaid shirt with a polka dot pants for a cocktail party or for a day at the beach, a string bikini that emphasizes the dimples of cellulite. And there are times when we get it right and feel fabulous even if the outfit is a bit outrageous. Fashion is like art. Some art pieces inspire, some evoke a deeper emotion and some you can just plainly dislike. With fashion it is similar. Not everyone can wear the same fashionable items. And as they say ‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder’. You can wear something like a candy pink outfit and feel and look great, while another person will look childish and even a little dopey in the same outfit.
That tiny bikini Bikinis, one-piece and two-piece swimsuits, thongs, dental-flosses and swim trunks can all be found on the sandy beaches of the Caribbean, the lakesides and at the pools all over the world. Though our main object is to soak up the sun, relax by the pool or play in the sand we must not forget that even when we are barely clad we have to consider the fashion etiquette. Would you walk into a supermarket with half of your face made up and a string bikini that emphasizes your cellulite dimples? Dressing for
a day on the beach requires the same thought as dressing for a cocktail party. Does the outfit suit the occasion? How much skin am I willing to show? What does this particular outfit say about me? But most importantly, does it fit my body type and personality? For the summer of 2010 (and year round if you live in the tropics) the trend in swimwear is solid colours that compliment your skin tone and body shape. If you have the right measurements wear a bright colour bikini and don’t hesitate to accessorize. Dental Flosses are passé, sometimes leaving something to the imagination can be very sexy. For the men, even if you have a sexy body, don’t

The most import thing to remember is to protect your skin. The sun rays become increasingly hotter and we need to not only protect our face but our whole body with sun-protecting crèmes. Don’t use it sparingly and repeat every two to three hours.
Hitting the streets Dressing up for work, a party, wedding or a leisurely lunch is a must. The same criteria applies for the beach. The key is to always be mindful of how you want to be perceived and remember that sometimes to inspire admiration can have more effect than provoking shock. Flirty tops paired with slim fit jeans and colourful sundresses seem to never go out of style because they express beauty and femininity without demolishing all the efforts of the feminist revolu-
tion that liberated women. Men are not off the hook when it comes to fashion. The streets have inspired much of men’s fashion. However, some styles (low rise pants that require an extra hand to stay in place) provoke images that diminishes from an otherwise outstanding personality. As mentioned before clothing, like fashion, can be compared to art. It sends a message that can be interpreted in various ways. A loud colour (think neon green) can send people bolting for the hills unless you work on an airport runway.
Going to battle The world can sometimes be compared to a battle field. Don’t go outside without the proper armour. How you dress is your one and only chance for a good ‘first impression as cliché as that may sound. There is no other chance to make a good impression. Imagine what that cellulite dimple string bikini is shouting to the beach and pool world or the outfit that looks like it’s from a time machine.Boarding a plane is not different. Airline security readily dictates what not to wear. Remember the belt has to come off for its trip through the scanner. How embarrassing would it be if your pants or skirt heads south to dangle at your ankles?
Cocktails, anyone? Dressing for success extends far beyond the boardroom or cubicles. It leaps over hours and comes to rest at cocktail hour. In our world that is becoming increasingly smaller thanks to faster communications you never know who will show up for cocktails or can guess who’s coming to dinner. The conventional ‘little black dress’ (for guys that fashionably tailored suit) will never go out of style. However, there is a line, though thin, between avant-garde and outrageous. Better dressed people, sad to say especially for us slackers, are often the most successful.

Una cuestión de gusto y estilo Hay una regla básica de la moda que cualquiera puede seguir. Es sencilla, según los expertos de la moda, y no cuesta nada. Pero nos puede ahorrar miles de miradas incrédulas. Esta regla ha estado dando vueltas desde el renacimiento y nos sigue inspirando hoy en día. La mayoría de las mujeres adoran el espejo y tienen que mirarse en él varias veces antes de salir de casa. Algunas desfilan frente al mismo en varios conjuntos antes de aventurarse al trajín del ancho mundo. Pero a veces puede salir muy mal: una camisa a cuadros con un pantalón a lunares para un aperitivo o, para un día en la playa, una bikini que enfatiza los hoyuelos de celulitis. A veces nos sale bien y nos sentimos fabulosas aunque el conjunto sea un poco atrevido. La moda es como el arte. Algunas obras inspiran, otras evocan una emoción más profunda y algunas sencillamente no nos gustan. Con la moda sucede algo parecido. No todo el mundo puede usar las mismas prendas que están en boga. Como dice el refrán: ‘en materia de gustos no hay nada escrito’. Una persona puede usar algo como un conjunto color rosa furioso y verse y sentirse fantástica, mientras otra luce infantil y hasta algo tonta con el mismo conjunto.
El pequeño bikini Bikinis, mallas de una y dos piezas, tangas de hilo dental y trajes de baño abundan en las arenas del Caribe, las playas lacustres y las piscinas del mundo entero. Aunque nuestro objetivo principal sea empaparnos de sol, relajarnos junto a la piscina o jugar en la arena, no debemos olvidar que aún cuando apenas estemos vestidos debemos considerar las reglas de la moda. ¿Entrarías a un supermercado con la cara a medio maquillar y una tanga que te resalta los hoyuelos de celulitis? Vestirse para un día en la playa requiere la misma consideración que vestirse para un tomar un aperitivo. ¿Se adecúa el conjunto a la ocasión? ¿Cuánta piel estoy dispuesta a mostrar? ¿Qué dice de mí este conjunto? Y lo más importante: ¿pega con mi tipo de cuerpo y personalidad? Para el verano del 2010 (y todo el año si vives en zona tropical), la tendencia en trajes de baño es hacia colores únicos que favorecen

el tono de la piel y la forma del cuerpo. Si tus medidas lo permiten, ponte un bikini de un color vivo y no dudes en agregar accesorios. Las tangas de hilo dental están pasadas de moda; a veces puede ser muy sexy dejar algo para la imaginación. En cuanto a los hombres, aunque tengan un cuerpo espectacular, que no se les ocurra usar un Speedo tipo ‘Baywatch’. Está muy de moda usar trajes de baño surfer. Lo más importante es acordarse de proteger la piel. Los rayos solares están cada vez más calientes y debemos protegernos no sólo la cara sino el cuerpo entero con cremas solares. Hay que usarlas sin asco y repetir cada dos a tres horas.
En la calle Es imprescindible vestirse bien para el trabajo, una fiesta, un casamiento o un almuerzo informal. El mismo criterio es válido para la playa. La clave es tener siempre en mente cómo deseamos que se nos perciba y recordar que a veces inspirar admiración puede tener mayor efecto que chocar. Las camisetas coquetas con jeans ajustados y las soleras alegres nunca pasan de moda porque expresan belleza y femineidad sin anular los esfuerzos de la revolución feminista para liberar a las mujeres. Los hombres no están exentos en materia de moda. Las calles han inspirado gran parte de la moda masculina. Sin embargo, algunos estilos (pantalón de corte bajo que requiere otra mano para sostenerlo) provocan imágenes que disminuyen una personalidad sobresaliente en otros aspectos. Ya hemos dicho que la ropa, al igual que la moda, puede compararse con el arte. Envía un mensaje que se puede interpretar de varias maneras. Un color fuerte (digamos verde neón) puede hacer que la gente huya despavorida a menos que el que lo usa trabaje en las pistas de un aeropuerto.
Al frente A veces se puede comparar el mundo con un campo de batalla. No salgas sin la armadura apropiada. La manera de vestirse es la única oportunidad para dar una buena ‘primera impresión’, por gastada que parezca la frase. No hay otra oportunidad de caer bien. Imagina lo que esa tanga con hoyuelos de celulitis está diciendo a gritos al mundo de la playa o la piscina, o lo que dice el conjunto que parece sacado de una máquina de tiempo. También es cierto cuando se viaja en avión. La seguridad de las empresas aéreas dicta lo que no hay que usar. Recuerda que hay que sacarse el cinturón para pasar por el escáner. ¿Qué sentirías si tu pantalón o tu falda terminara por tus tobillos?
¿Alguien quiere un aperitivo? Vestirse para el éxito va mucho más allá de la sala de conferencias o de los cubículos. Se extiende hasta aterrizar en la hora del aperitivo. En nuestro mundo que se va achicando cada vez más gracias a la velocidad de la comunicación, nunca se sabe quién va a aparecer para un aperitivo ni quién viene a cenar. El tradicional ‘pequeño vestido negro’ (o el traje de corte actual para los hombres) nunca pasa de moda. Sin embargo, existe una línea, delgada por cierta, entre la vanguardia y lo extravagante. Aunque nos duela a los más haraganes, la gente bien vestida suele ser la de mayor éxito.

10º SOUL BEACH MUSICAL FESTIVAL ANUAL EN ARUBA Oranjestad - El 10º Soul Beach Music Festival anual se realizará en Aruba del 26 al 31 de mayo de 2010. From May 9th to June 5th the ‘Buddy Dive Free Diving’ event will be held. For the second consecutive year this event is held at Buddy Dive Resort. Last year Karol Meyer broke the South American record on Bonaire by reaching a depth of 93 meters. This year she will be a special guest again accompanied by Patrick Musimu from Belgium as they attempt to set a new world record in the tandem no limit category. Later this year the Bonaire Jazz Foundation will undoubtedly once again put together a successful and fantastic ‘Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival’. The festival will take place on May 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th. A variety of musical styles with bands from Brazil, Cuba, the US, and The Netherlands will be brought to various locations on the island as internationally known jazz musicians mingle with the best musical talent Bonaire has to offer. The festival, that takes place for the sixth consecutive
time, will - with a world star like Arturo Sandoval -, undoubtedly attract many visitors from the region and other countries. As usual the festival begins at the beautiful, romantic location of Fort Oranje on May 27th with an evening of ‘Jazz and Poetry’. Then, on May 28th and 29th the two main concerts take place at the Tipsy Seagull at the Plaza Resort. Top attraction is the world renowned trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and his 7 man band. Arturo is originally from Cuba and now lives in the USA. He has played in nearly all world famous jazz bands and the fact that he has played in the Antilles and Aruba in the past will undoubtedly bring many visitors from our neighboring islands. But Arturo’s band is not alone! Also performing will be Manny Moreira from Brazil, BEKU from the US, Joke Bruijs and Frits Landesberg from the Netherlands and Henk van Twillert with Tjako van Schie, also from the Netherlands. All this will be complemented by our best local musicians: the Cabaco Trio, the Silver Bullet Steelband, the New Generation Dancers, and Kaña Brabu. A combination of varying styles of jazz, each with their own character. For fans that just cannot get enough, it is worth mentioning that jam sessions with many of the musicians will be held at Sense, just across the street from Plaza, starting at 23:30 on Friday and Saturday. The ever very popular Jazz Brunch takes place on Sunday, May 30th at the Divi Flamingo Resort where musicians participate in the festival along with other musicians and singers will provide a spectacular jam session while guests can enjoy a delicious brunch. The fourth Bonaire ‘Dive Into Summer’ program, a four-month long event taking place from June 1 to September 30 2010 will feature a myriad of activities. Throughout the summer guest speakers and special events and activities focusing on diving, eco-oriented activities, music and fun will be featured. Bonaire ‘Dive Into Summer’ will also feature specially priced packages for various events, specialty topics and one-of-a-kind events. Part of the Bonaire ‘Dive Into Summer’ program something completely different is organized for the sixth time on Bonaire, proving that the little island has a lot to offer, especially this season. On July 6th the Annual ‘Starboard Pro Kids Freestyle World Championship’ will be organized. This means a week long of activities with a special focus on the young participating children. An internationally recognized windsurf competition which is the meeting point of different countries around the world. You can watch well known international windsurfers as they show their amazing freestyle skills at Sorobon. The event features some of windsurfing’s best freestyle talent, best judges and key personalities of the windsurfing world. Categories and contestants range up to the age of 17 years and start with the category ‘baby/kids’ 1-7 years. Trophies are awarded and the king and queen are chosen at the end of the event. The largest indoor jazz festival in the world is coming to Curaçao. The North Sea Jazz Festival is a legendary Dutch festival, where since 1975 the world’s best jazz, funk, soul, latin, salsa and R&B musicians performed. In September of this year the first edition of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival will be held. The Rotterdam based festival once before organized an edition abroad, in Cape Town, South Africa. This Curaçao edition is very special, both for the Dutch organization as for Curaçao. The aim is to organize a festival for music lovers, tourists as well as the people of Curaçao.The first edition of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival will take place on Friday September 3rd and Saturday September 4th at the World Trade Center (WTC). During these two festival nights, a diversity of international artists will perform in and around the WTC. Artists as Grammy winning singer and songwriter Lionel Richie, bassist Richard Bona from Cameroun, bur also John Legend, Sergio Mendes, George Benson, Michel Camilo Trio, La India and Luis Enrique. International superstar Lionel Richie is best known for his numerous unforgettable hits like ‘All Night Long’, ‘Hello’, ‘Penny Lover’ and ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’. Cameroonian bassist and singer Richard Bona recently released his new album ‘Ten shades of Blues’. For this album Bona travelled the world to play the blues with musicians from all continents, everywhere with its own local nuance. Richard Bona is considered one of the best bassists of his time. Singerpianist John Legend made his break-through with hits like ‘Ordinary people’ and ‘P.D.A. (We Just Don’t Care)’ and was subsequently rewarded with several Grammy awards. Sergio Mendes is one of the most popular Brazilian artists of all times. He is a master of improvisation who is able to render a fresh and festive note to every bossa nova. In 2006, Mendes successfully released the album ‘Timeless’, together with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas, and for the second time in his career scored a hit with ‘Mas Que Nada’. Dominican pianist Michel Camilo could also be called the ‘Ambassador
of Latin jazz’. His music is best described as a perfect mix of swinging jazz and Latin rhythms. During the festival, Camilo can be enjoyed with the two fellow performers with whom he forms a trio, bassist Charles Flores and drummer Dafnis Prieto.‘El Principe de la Salsa’, also known as Luis Enrique, is the pioneer of the romantic ‘salsa sensual’. Enrique’s concert is bound to bring the audience a superb blend of classical and modern salsa combined with sensitive Latin-pop ballads. The career of La India has seen many high points on both the jazz, Latin and dance scene, but she became well known to a wider audience for her up-tempo salsa hits. La India has performed together with Eddie Palmieri, Marc Anthony, and Tito Puente. Guitar legend George Benson has been active on the musical scene for quite some years. In the sixties, he used to play with Miles Davis, and he still plays his classic songs ‘On Broadway’ and ‘Give Me the Night’ in a live setting on a regular basis. In the week before the festival, there will be jazz concerts all over the island, and on Monday August 30th, salsa legend Alberto Barros will perform during a festive, public kick-off concert on ‘Plasa Brion’. The Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival has been made possible with an agreement between The Fundashon Bon Intenshon foundation of businessman Gregory Elias, the Curaçao Tourism Board and MOJO Concerts. Viene a Curazao el más grande festival de jazz bajo techo del mundo. El North Sea Jazz Festival es un legendario festival holandés en el que desde 1975 han participado los mejores músicos del jazz, funk, soul, música latina, salsa y R&B del mundo. En septiembre de este año, tendrá lugar el primer Festival North Sea Jazz de Curazao.En el pasado, se organizó una edición de este festival de Rotterdam en el extranjero, en Cape Town, Suráfrica. Esta edición curazoleña es muy especial, tanto para los organizadores holandeses como para la isla de Curazao. La meta es organizar un festival tanto para turistas como los del pueblo de Curazao que amen la música. La primera edición del Festival North Sea Jazz de Curazao tendrá lugar el viernes 3 y sábado 4 de septiembre en el World Trade Center (WTC). En esas dos noches, variados artistas internacionales se presentarán dentro y fuera del WTC, artistas tales como el cantautor ganador del Grammy, Lionel Richie, el bajista Richard Bona de Camerún, así como John Legend, Sergio Mendes, George Benson, el Trió Michel Camilo, La India y Luis Enrique. In the previous edition we described the culture, history and country of Haiti. Now, merely a couple of months later, the people of Haiti are struggling after the destruction of the earthquake of January 12th of this year. One of the poorest countries in the world had to endure yet another tragedy. InselAir was there right after the heartbreaking disaster and is still there today, doing all they can to help rebuild the island for a new and better tomorrow. InselAir played an important role in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck Haiti. They realized immediately the seriousness of the situation and organized relief flights. “We knew the situation was very critical and that we had to lend a helping hand. Family members and volunteers from all over the world were in need of transportation to help their family, friends and fellow human beings,” says Jurgen Lippinkhof, the chief commercial officer of InselAir. Right after the earthquake InselAir started to receive phone calls from different groups: military- and humanitarian organizations but also governmental organizations sought their help. A couple of days after the earthquake InselAir had their first rescue flight to Haiti. On board: ten military men from Holland and a rescue team consisting of 67 people and eight dogs; all hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst. “The people who went to Haiti on this trip did not know what to expect. Even now,
when you arrive at the airport, its pure chaos and I can only envision what it must have been like the first couple of weeks.” During this flight InselAir also transported water, medicine and MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat). Other flights followed and they transported a hundred doctors of Hospitals for Humanity, an American organization. They also organized a flight for Airline Ambassadors and the army, and shortly after they escorted a hundred orphans via Curaçao to Holland. “When you feel the need to do something good for mankind, you don’t really think about it, you just do it the best you can. As an airline company we wanted to help and so we did.” According to Lippinkhof mankind has a special way of uniting in times of need. “In the blink of an eye, people from all over the world arrived in Haiti. Whether they were volunteers, journalists or part of a rescue team. Everybody was and is still there for one single purpose: to help.” Soon after the first relief flights, word spread that InselAir was transporting people to Haiti. There were still many volunteers and family members who wanted to help or inquire about their family and friends. This was a problem for InselAir because after the earthquake hit, the air traffic control of the US government took over and it was no longer possible to ‘just’ fly to and from Haiti. The US air traffic control decided at what time people could fly to and from the airport of Port-au-Prince. An airport with an air traffic control consisting of only three men with cell phones. ‘Things were very bad’, says Lippinkhof as he describes the period up to a month after the earthquake shook the grounds in Haiti. “As soon as you ar-
rive at the airport, this terrible feeling gets you. Thick clouds of dust due to the lack of rain and it is like walking into a warzone. There are helicopters flying over your head and hundreds of military tents set up at the airport.” Lippinkhof continues to describe what he saw during his visit to Port-au-Prince. “The feeling of being in a war zone grows stronger as soon as you walk out of the airport. People are walking around aimlessly and purposelessly, lost, discouraged and thirsty. The smell of decomposing bodies is overwhelming and you realize immediately that there are still people lying under the collapsed buildings.” Lippinkhof says that it will take at least five to ten years to rebuild. Chaos grew in the aftermath and people became violent, were heavily armed and drove around in cars with bullet holes. Nongovernmental organizations set up sixteen distribution points to hand out food and water and only women were allowed in line. The food and water supply seemed to be well organized but medicine is what is mostly needed. In February InselAir started the commercial flights. Family members and friends were able to visit the island and the first ten flights were booked full before they were executed. It remains one of the most travelled destinations since the disaster. Port-au-Prince and surroundings is one disaster area. Villages are completely lost and over 200.000 people dead but somehow this strong and humble nation, who have endured so much in the past decades will rise again. Smiling, dancing, praying and hoping. They know that a new and better tomorrow is on the horizon…There is after all, hope for Haiti.

En nuestra anterior edición, presentamos la cultura, la historia y la nación de Haití. Hoy, escasos meses después, el pueblo de Haití está en crisis después de la destrucción causada por el terremoto del último 12 de enero. Uno de los países más pobres del mundo ha tenido que afrontar otra tragedia. InselAir estuvo allá justo después de la desgarradora catástrofe, y sigue allá haciendo todo lo posible para ayudar a reconstruir la isla para un nuevo y mejor mañana. InselAir desempeñó un importante papel durante las primeras horas después del terremoto que azotó a Haití. La empresa se dio cuenta de inmediato de la gravedad de la situación y respondió realizando vuelos de socorro. “Sabíamos que la situación era muy crítica y que había que hacer algo. Familiares y voluntarios de todo el mundo necesitaban transporte para llevar ayuda a sus familiares y amigos, y al prójimo en general”, dice Jurgen Lippinkhof, director comercial de InselAir. Inmediatamente después del terremoto, InselAir empezó a recibir llamadas telefónicas de distintos grupos: organizaciones militares y humanitarias, pero también solicitudes de ayuda de organizaciones no gubernamentales. InselAir también se transportó agua, medicamentos y comidas listas para el consumo (MRE, por sus siglas en inglés). En vuelos posteriores se transportó a un centenar de médicos de Hospitales para la Humanidad, una organización estadounidense. También se organizó un vuelo para la organización Airline Ambassadors (Embajadores de Aerolíneas) y el ejército, y poco después escoltaron a un centenar de niños huérfanos a Holanda, haciendo trasbordo en Curazao. “Cuando uno siente impelido a hacer algo para la humanidad, no se piensa; uno simplemente hace lo que pueda y de la mejor manera posible. Como compañía aérea, queríamos dar una mano y eso hicimos. “Según Lippinkhof, en tiempos de crisis los seres humanos suelen unirse de 1 muy particular.” En un abrir y cerrar de ojos, gente de todo el mundo llegaron a Haití, ya sean voluntarios, periodistas o miembros de algún equipo de rescate. El mundo entero llegó allá y sigue allá con un mismo propósito: ayudar”. Poco después de que llegaran los primeros vuelos de socorro, se supo que InselAir estaba transportando personas a Haití. Todavía había muchos voluntarios y familiares que querían ayudar a sus familiares y amigos o conseguir alguna información. se le venía encima un pavor indescriptible. Espesas nubes de polvo cubrían el paisaje por la ausencia de lluvias. Era como entrar en una zona de guerra, con helicópteros sobrevolando y cientos de tiendas de campaña militares armadas en pleno aeropuerto.” Lippinkhof pasa a describir lo que vio durante su visita a Puerto Príncipe: “La sensación de estar en una zona de guerra se hace más real tan pronto uno recorre el aeropuerto: Personas vagando sin rumbo ni destino, perdidas, descorazonadas y sedientas. El abrumador olor de cuerpos en descomposición. E inmediatamente uno se percata de que todavía hay seres humanos bajo las ruinas. “Dice Lippinkhof que la reconstrucción tomará por lo muy menos cinco a diez años. El caos creció en los días siguientes al desastre y la gente se puso violenta. Había hombres fuertemente armados merodeando en coches que llevaban agujeros de bala. Las organizaciones no gubernamentales establecieron dieciséis puntos de distribución para el suministro de alimento y agua, y en las colas sólo se admitían mujeres. El suministro de comida y agua parecía estar bien organizado, pero lo que más apremiaba era la falta de medicamentos. En febrero, InselAir reinició vuelos comerciales a Haití. Familiares y amigos han podido visitar la isla y los diez primeros vuelos estaban completamente reservados de antemano. Aun después del desastre, Haití sigue siendo uno de los destinos más frecuentados. Puerto Príncipe y sus alrededores son zona de desastre. Hay pueblos que desaparecieron por completo y se perdieron más de 200.000 vidas. Pero de alguna manera esta nación fuerte y humilde que en las últimas décadas tanto ha sufrido renacerá: sonriendo, bailando, orando y esperando. Check In Times & Luggage Regulations
Keep the following restrictions in mind Passengers who travel to the United States have to keep in mind the following restrictions, if liquid is to be carried on to the aircraft you must ensure: › The liquid is in a container with a maximum capacity of 100ml (or equivalent) › The containers are all contained within one closed transparent re-sealable plastic bag (such as a re-sealable freezer bag or zip top bag) which itself must not exceed 1 liter in capacity or 20cm x 20cm. › The contents of the plastic bag fit comfortably within it, and the bag is completely closed. The plastic bag must be taken out of your cabin bag and placed in a tray for x-ray screening. In this case ‘liquids’ include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurized containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.

‘Serious Fun’ was all in the game at the 30th edition of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta during the first weekend in March. I had the joy to take part in it for the eighth consecutive time, taking pictures of 240 yachts between 30 and 115 ft competing on St. Maarten’s wonderful, crystal clear waters. Sailors, tourists and locals flocked together at the daily parties at Philipsburg’s famous Boardwalk, Marigot’s Waterfront and on Kim Sha Beach at Simpson Bay, where the prize giving on Sunday was followed by a tremendous performance
“St. Maarten Heineken Regatta” by reggae artist Maxi Priest. On the water it was impressing to witness three days of serious sailing in fierce competition, won by Tom Hill’s 75 ft. Reichel Pugh “Titan 15” steered by America’s Cup legend Peter Isler. Organizer Robbie Ferron, regatta director Heather Tackling and 150 volunteers made the island shine in what it is famous for: a boating center with excellent facilities and events. Journalists from all over the world enjoyed good hospitality and a thrilling ride on one of the most remarkable boats on the island. The owner of “Stew’s Special” generously hoisted the press flag on his custom built 70 ft Mystic SL speed machine, granting us the opportunity to do our job like in a Bond movie.
Durante la trigésima edición de la Regata Heineken de San Martín, que tuvo lugar el primer fin de semana de marzo, la “diversión en serio” fue ineludible. Me tocó el placer de participar en ella por octava vez consecutiva, fotografiando 240 yates de 9 a 35 metros que compitieron sobre las fantásticas y cristalinas aguas de San Martín. Marineros, turistas y lugareños por igual se congregaban a las fiestas diarias en el famoso paseo entablado de Philipsburg, el paseo marítimo de Marigot y la playa Kim Sha en Simpson Bay, donde la premiación del domingo fue seguida por una tremenda presentación por el artista del reggae, Maxi Priest. En el agua, fue impresionante presenciar tres días de feroz competencia y auténtica navegación que resultaron en la victoria del Titan 15, un Reichel Pugh de 23 metros, propiedad de Tom Hill y dirigido por la leyenda del America’s Cup, Peter Isler. El organizador Robbie Ferron,
“Ragata Heineken de San Martin” la directora de la regata, Heather Tackling, y 150 voluntarios hicieron brillar a la isla en el área en que más se distingue: como un centro de navegación con excelentes instalaciones y eventos. Periodistas de todas partes del mundo disfrutaron de la gran hospitalidad, así como de un emocionante paseo en uno de los botes más idiosincráticos de la isla, ya que el propietario del Stew’s Special fue tan amable de izar la bandera de la prensa en su bólido personalizado, el Mystic SL, de 23 metros, dándonos la oportunidad de llevar a cabo nuestro trabajo igual que en las películas de James Bond.
