EDITOR’S NOTES

THEY ARE NOT ALL KEEPERS

The facts of life dictate that if you breed Longhorns (or any livestock) they are not all going to be representative of the kind of animal you want to continue breeding to improve the quality of your herd. In other words, there are always culls.

Ideally, you want the culls to generate income of some form in order to either 1) fund the top of your Longhorn program or b) allow you to continue your hobby.

The answer to the conundrum...Longhorn beef!

If you don’t have the heart to haul your Longhorns to a slaughter house, you can always sell them at a local sale barn or to others who have a beef program and need animals to keep up with product demand. That way you aren’t hands on with the processing of beef animals.

This month we present several types of information for those who appreciate, or want to learn to appreciate, the Longhorn as a beef animal. The first of these is our feature about Tom and Trina Curtin, written by Kim Grijalva. All of whom are part of our Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer Program. I’m excited for their participation and the tidbits of wisdom about cattle handling and the Longhorn as beef are interesting indeed.

You can also find an article from the Chairman of the TLBAA Beef Committee, Andrew Shagoury on utilizing social media marketing. Learn how to use this economical (often free) technology to reach a much wider market for your beef.

If you want information about the Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer Program turn to page 26. You can find all our current members listed by state on pgs. 24-25. How can the beef producer list help you? If you are a breeder, it’s a great way to find those in your area who may be interested in buying all those bull calves.

On the flip side, they definitely are not all destined for a beef program! Seed stock and trophy animals are a huge part of this industry and two events highlighting those animals are around the corner. In June, the TLBAA World Show will highlight those who topped their classes in the show ring this past show season, and in October the TLBAA Horn Showcase returns to give everyone a chance to document (and compete) in three horn measuring categories, as well as in a futurity, with those who win their class in both competitions earning a coveted Superior Award.

So look at your herd carefully and plan not only on what to do with those animals at the top of your herd, but have a plan for those at the bottom as well. The Longhorn beef industry makes it possible for lower end animals to still contribute to the bottom line.

Blessings!

THE NATURE OF CATTLE

A visit with cattlemen Tom and Trina Curtin at their ranch in Wilson, Oklahoma

On a recent visit to Oklahoma, I had an opportunity to sit down with Tom and Trina Curtin at their ranch and talk Longhorn, beef, and what makes a winning partnership in life and raising cattle.

Like many I’ve met in the Longhorn community, my husband and I are not only life partners, but in the day-to-day operations of our growing Longhorn cattle operation. And like many, we fell in love with the Longhorn and the extended family that comes with being part of the Longhorn community. But, we didn’t start with a foundation of cattle raising and stockmanship. We met the Curtin’s about twelve years ago by way of our horses; Tom and Trina offer horsemanship clinics, teaching riders to work in partnership with their horse based on an understanding of the animal’s true nature. During Winter Camp, Trina serves up meals that can transport to another place in time. While I sit at their long farm table alongside my fellow Winter Camp attendees, I like

to imagine the chuck wagon, a single pot of food on an open fire, enamel bowls filled with bone-warming, slow-cooked Longhorn beef. While many are drawn to Longhorn for its iconic rolling horns and the romance that the breed instills, our love affair for Longhorn began at that table, over great conversation and dining on the best beef America can put on a plate.

Longhorn folks are a romantic breed, particularly if Longhorn is being raised for beef; otherwise, why not just raise Angus in half the time? Well, just gaze out over a pasture of Longhorn, and that question will answer itself. Now sit down for a visit with Tom Curtin and let that rasp in his voice take you on a journey beginning in the prairies of south-central Montana to northern Florida, where he and Trina, a cattlewoman and trainer of show horses, met and married. Then, on to work under the guidance of one of America’s most legendary cattlemen and horsemen, Buster Welch, for the iconic King Ranch. During our conversations, Tom

talked about the profound impact those early years and mentors had on his and Trina’s approach, setting the foundation for their approach to stockmanship.

Kim: Who were your most significant influences, and what did they teach you that you practice today?

Tom: We were training horses on about 5,000 head of cattle for King Ranch. Buster mentioned that if you want a really nice cow horse, you need to be able to get that horse to go straight, stop straight, and back up straight. Well, when I started doing that with the horse, the biggest thing I observed was how cattle responded differently than what I’d seen before; from all those years as a kid being around cattle, this was just something different. We weren’t training these cattle; these were just things we were doing that were right for the horse, and the cattle naturally responded to them positively. Buster Welch had an uncanny ability to sort and handle livestock on horseback like no person I have yet to see, even to this day. Trina and I spent another seventeen years working on that with the likes of Ray Hunt, inspired by Bud Williams and his family. These were three of the most influential people in my life who could really accomplish something that had value to the animal. They all talked about straight lines in horses as it promotes sureness; sureness produces straightness. The revelation for me was how straight lines for cattle promoted a sense of ease; predators don’t move in straight lines, so these cattle know we aren’t there to hurt them; they move with ease and with very little pressure as a result.

Kim: As a student of yours and Trina’s, I have always heard you talk about straightness and practiced it in a more abstract way in the saddle. However, applying that when moving cattle really clicked. No flailing my arms over my head or hootin’ at them, just calm and easy; “positive pressure,” as Tom might say. And I realized I could do that in the saddle or afoot. Thank you for that.

if you see me, it doesn’t take long before you see Trina, if you see Trina I’m just around the corner. We don’t just practice this stuff; we live it. And it’s our edge over others who do this work solo.

What’s always so apparent in Tom and Trina is the uniqueness of their partnership in and out of the saddle. The balance and calm they create transmits to the horses, the cows, and even their dogs. Watching them working cattle out in the field, you find yourself leaning back against that iron pipe fencing and letting it soak in along with the warm Oklahoma sun. They just seem to know exactly where to be for each other and the animals. Recently, I watched them move three bulls in unison from about a hundred feet away, applying just a suggestion of pressure that made it look like those bulls wanted to go where they went on their own accord. I wanted to understand how that partnership got started, and how it impacts what they do in the saddle and with cattle.

Kim: Tom tell me about your partnership with Trina?

Kim: Trina, tell me, what brought you to the Longhorn and the “dance” you do with Tom?

Trina: I was raised in Florida; we trained pleasure horses and showed cattle. When we were working for Buster, Sheila had a small herd of Longhorns, and I just fell in love with them; they were peaceful and majestic. When we finally got our own place, Tom was going to make sure we got some Longhorn. We have learned everything together; our journey has always been together as a team, and I think that’s what helps us dance. I tell people that couples that dance together stay together and also work well together.

Kim: Your partnership, your bond, is apparent. I think in your case the work is the dance. Does it feel like work?

Trina & Tom Gettin Started

Trina: It doesn’t feel like work. We’ve been from ranch to ranch, and most families hate working days. Mom’s screaming at Dad, Dad’s yelling at kids, nobody’s happy. And Tom and I show up, and we’re like, what are y’all doing? This is fun; just focus on your cows and bring that energy level down, and the cattle feel it. The cattle are happy and doing what you need them to do.

Tom: You know my whole opinion on whether it’s work. I always tell everyone I’ve never worked a day in my life. I try to instill in people that this is not work; it should be fun, and it’s just something we can do to help these animals. This is an opportunity to take something Mother Nature created and allow us to work with and handle it. I don’t care what animal it is; I just try to figure out what they naturally need from us. That turns out to be a pretty deep subject. The most valuable thing I can help folks with is to get them to understand that these animals naturally want to please us. They want to do what we want them to do if we take the time to learn what they need from us. I always try to strive to be better. I think about how I can benefit my animals and gain a better understanding of their needs. In my younger days, I surrounded myself with folks who knew more than I knew, and I still do that today. It’s not about a method you fit into; it’s about understanding what that animal needs and what is in their nature. That’s our responsibility as good stewards of these animals.

Kim: Who’s a contemporary influence?

Tom: In Longhorn, there is no one, in my opinion, that is a better steward of the Longhorn breed than Nancy Dunn. I met Nancy going on 20 years ago. She and my daughter used to compete in ranch horse versatility. Aside from being a damn fine horseman and human being, she’s impacted the Longhorn industry in profound ways. She really looks at the whole animal; conformation, horn, color, maternal traits, and production. It shows in her herd, she’s got a great eye and a real sense for what genetics to put together. We’ve partnered on some bulls over the years and I always enjoy seeing those genetics come through. —

The Longhorn is known historically as the “Beef that fed America” and was the mainstay for nearly 200 years due to its ability to adapt and stock up on marginal pasture. The breed’s evolution to satisfy modern demand for extreme tip-to-tip measurement of horns is relatively new and has given way, in some cases, to a focus on single-trait breeding at the demise of traits important to production and the sustained health of the breed. But walking among the Curtin’s herd, there’s something different, a cohesiveness in size and shape, balance from head to toe, wellsupported horns, a quality in conformation, beautiful color, and something less tangible but important; it’s something you feel being among their herd; a sense of peacefulness. My presence in the pasture doesn’t

ring the dinner bell nor cause alarm; moms and babies, bulls and steer alike, quietly allow me to walk among them. This sense of ease inherent to the ranch, Tom and Trina believe, leads to healthier cattle that stock up better and meat that is tender and rich in flavor. But for new breeders and seasoned cattle ranchers moving to Longhorn or deciding to add them in addition to a herd, I wanted to hear from Tom and Trina about what they looked for when building their own herd.

Kim: Tell me about some of the choices you made when building your herd and the five qualities: Horn, Color, Disposition, Production, and Conformation.

Tom: The Longhorn has a lot of attractive traits and mannerisms about them. The goal was to get something that would eat grass with low input. We started with Longhorn 27 years ago, and we learned that there was some value in the breed, so we started looking for quality, registered stock. Trina, having been in the show world, was looking at the production value of what we were buying but also wanted something pretty and well-made. Trina has an unbelievable eye, and those initial animals we built our herd on were selected for quality, longevity, ability to hold up well, and good maternal traits. The last thing on our list

18 | April 2024 TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS Feature – continued from pg. 16
Yuri & Tom having some fun

Tom gives some gentle encouragement

was horn length, which shows in our herd today. But that’s not why we have Longhorn. We are interested in having a quality and attractive animal that can produce something beautiful with all of those traits and valuable as a beef animal, too, calves that can hit 450lbs by weaning. Longhorns, in general, are an easy-going and gentle animal. Regarding disposition, I think some may be more sensitive, but with proper livestock handling, we’ve never had trouble with disposition or what I have heard some folks refer to as “crazy.” Because of their horns, they have a natural distance between animals, so it’s easy to sort and work around them.

Trina: I want a nice healthy cow with a nice straight back, a deep chest and underline, and a good udder. I treasure my cows, who are good mothers, and they know it. I walk out in the pasture and see they’ve had a calf. I let them be; I enjoy watching the natural process of these cows raising their calves and how smart they are. With our steers, I give them the best care until we process them. They feel that positive energy.

Kim: In our conversations you talk about a calf’s ability to stock up with low input, on primarily grass or compressed grass pellet. What’s the perfect combination when feeding?

Tom: Let’s start with how we are feeding Longhorn; when you feed cattle, you need to spread that feed out. If you’re just dropping a round bale and allowing those cattle to get all wadded up, you’ll stress them out. We roll that hay out; cattle don’t have any trouble eating that feed off the ground. Consider if you were at a dinner for thirty people, and they brought out two plates and said have at it. That creates a tremendous amount of stress in those cows. Everyone thinks the cows are happy to see you coming with the feed bucket; no, they’re stressing about who’s gonna get it. They can even get to the point that they forget about their calves, and when you see that show up in your herd, you’re in trouble.

Kim: How do you avoid getting those animals worked up about eating? And what do you feed?

Tom: The biggest thing is understanding their needs and also spending time with those cattle when you don’t need to feed them. I mix it up. Sometimes, I feed with a team of horses, and sometimes I ride out and don’t feed. I avoid using a feed vehicle and dropping feed in a straight line; it causes enormous stress. We mainly feed dry bales, liquid protein, and occasional cubes. To mitigate bad habits, observe how feeding affects your cattle; we don’t use feed to move our animals or call our animals to feed. If I rely on feed to move my cow, and she’s had an experience in the chute she doesn’t want to repeat, then feed isn’t going to override fear. If you expose these animals to positive pressure to drive and handle, then you’re in business. I’ve been to Longhorn shows, and some don’t know how to move their cows without feed, and these cows have never been taught how to accept pressure in a good way. So these horned

animals get into trouble, and that’s how you end up with broken horns or worse.

Kim: On the topic of beef, why is Longhorn the only beef you eat and what are your favorite cuts:

Trina: We love Longhorn because it’s lean and healthy, but we also love the flavor of the beef. The burger is exceptional, and I like that it doesn’t cook away in the pan or grill. The roasts always make a hearty and filling meal for us and the team during our workday. Our favorite is, of course, the tenderloin and the filet. Those are always a favorite cut in any beef, but from Longhorn, that is just about the finest tasting beef you can find.

Tom Curtin is a regular contributor to Eclectic Horseman magazine. Tom and Trina run their Winter Stockmanship Camp in Wilson, Oklahoma, from January through early April. Throughout the rest of the year, they spend time with their family in Montana and conduct clinics throughout the U.S.

Using Social Media To Market Beef

You should be marketing your beef, or any product or service you’re selling for that matter, on social media.

The most recent data says that 66% of the world’s population uses some form of social media. That my friends, is a lot of potential customers! Approximately 5 billion potential customers actually. That number is almost unfathomable to most of us, but it does illus trate the point that there is a large audience out there for us to tap into, we just have to figure out how. One unique aspect of social media marketing is that we, as a small business, can reach that very large audience that would otherwise be either too expensive or logistically impossible to reach otherwise. With social media, the providing company, be it Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok or X, already has the software in place to distribute your content to the entirety of their users. The afore mentioned 5 billion people. All we have to do is figure out the best way to take advantage of the algorithm to reach our potential customers.

Ok, let’s get real.

2. Be engaging- that means when people comment on your content or ask a question, reply! Comment on other accounts outside your friend circle! Think of it as social media networking.

We’re not going to reach 5 billion people with our beef advertising. Kim Kardashian only has 364 million followers on Instagram, (I know, I checked for this article). We can, however, reach millions. Yes, millions, as a small business on social media. How do I know? I’ve done it. How?

By creating engaging content with a unique subject matter. You’re not likely to reach all those people just posting pictures and ads for what you’re selling. You need your social media to give people a reason to follow. The good news is, Texas Longhorns are inherently nice to look at. They’re attention grabbing! That’s a good start, but still not quite enough.

So, let me introduce you to the three E’s of social media.

1. Entertainment

2. Education

3. E-Commerce

If we create entertaining and educational content with our inherently interesting subject matter, Texas Longhorns, that will open the door for E-Commerce. Nobody wants to follow a page on social media that is always trying to sell you something. Not if they REALIZE you’re trying to sell them something. If you just provide that engaging content and use it to guide folks to your products or website where your products are located, your chances of turning “followers” into customers increases dramatically.

This does take some time and effort, but it is worth it when done correctly. Here are a few ways to maximize your chances of success on social media:

1. Play the game- The “algorithm” of whichever social media you are using pushes certain types of

3. Be consistent- try to post something regularly, without sacrificing quality.

4. Always have some larger plan of driving people to your products. This can be as simple as keeping all of your content “on brand” and regularly referencing your website link.

My social media strategy has always been to provide value. Build trust with your followers by staying ‘on brand”. People follow accounts where they know what they’re getting. If I post pictures of Texas Longhorns four days a week then a picture of my McDonalds chicken nuggets on the fifth day, I will lose trust. They followed for the Longhorns. Once you’ve established that brand and that trust, folks are more willing to buy your products. That is the “large scale” version of using social media to market your beef.

You can also apply a strategy that uses social media to market your products more locally. I have found Facebook to be very good for this. There are Facebook groups for just about everything. Including people in your area who are looking for locally raised beef. Find those groups and utilize them. Facebook even has “paid ads” you can run and set the parameters to show the ad to a certain geographic area or demographic of people. If you have a small advertising budget, this feature can be handy for advertising beef locally.

In conclusion, there are many ways to use social media to advertise your products. I discuss some more in depth about this on Episode #36 of “The Big Iron Podcast”.

The most important thing is to get online and start learning how to use this massively beneficial resource to better your business!

JOIN THE PROGRAM!

Why are all those ranches listed on the previous pages? They are all paid member of the TLBAA’s Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer Program.

Can you sell your Longhorns as beef without this program? Yes, you can. However, as a member, you can enjoy increased exposure for your program, access to educational materials and webinars and the ability to use our beef producer and certified Texas Longhorn beef logos on your labels. This not only helps your marketing efforts, it gives a big boost to your credibility to the public skeptical about what they are eating.

Along with those logos, you can be sent an official letter to present to your USDA or State inspected facility that verifies you have the right to use the logos on your label and that you are indeed a member of the TLBAA and raising registered Texas Longhorns.

When you join the program, you will immediately be sent 150 marketing brochures for FREE. These colorful, professional brochures have nutritional data, health information and the benefits of the product you are selling.

Your ranch contact information will be listed on our website on the Longhorn Beef Providers page. The new website has a whole menu of information that we are steadily adding to about Longhorn beef to educate the public about the desirability of the product and the productivity of the Longhorn breed.

Twice a year, (currently in April & October), Trails Magazine will publish the list of Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producers to reach those who may not venture online.

Trails also features editorial space each month about different topics regarding Longhorn beef production and twice a year, in the months listed above, Longhorn Beef is the Featured Topic. In those special beef issues, those choosing to mention the beef program or logo in their ads get to run for the lowest 12x rate even if they only run once a year.

The committee is always looking for input and trying new ways to keep members, and those who are not yet members, a wealth of information on building a beef program via webinars, seminars at events and making more materials available online.

Currently there is a private Facebook group for program members where producers can share photos of both cooked and raw products, packaging/label ideas and discuss production topics.

The new website does not yet have the members only page of resources live, but it is coming soon.

Your beef committee has also started a public Facebook group for anyone interested in the topic of Longhorn Beef. Simply search Facebook for “Registered Longhorn Beef” and if you see the logo above, you know you have the correct page.

Registered Texas Longhorn Beef Producer members have access to, when available, pop-ups and materials for use in displays at public events where they will be promoting the product and the program as well.

The program is only $75 per year and the form to join can be found on our website or by calling the TLBAA office and we can e-mail you one.

Beef Cut Glossary

BRISKET: The beef cut taken from the breast section of a beef carcass, including the first five ribs. Commercially, the bones are removed and the brisket is trimmed of excess fat and sold boneless. Also sold both fresh and cured as corned beef. Requires moist cooking methods.

CENTER CUT: Interior of a meat cut after the outer edges or ends are removed to create a more desirable, uniformly shaped portion.

CHUCK TENDER: Supraspinatus muscle separated from the beef chuck. Also referred to as Mock Tender and Scotch Tender.

CLUB STEAK: Bone-in beef top loin steak from the rib end of the beef short loin containing the 13th rib. On foodservice menus, this term may refer to any steak from the rib or loin

CUBED STEAK: A process of mechanical tenderization using a machine with two sets of sharp pointed discs which score or cut muscle fibers from boneless cuts without tearing them. Irregular pieces of meat can be “knitted” together to form a more attractive cut. Cubing can also be done manually using a butcher’s mallet, which is pounded into the boneless meat.

CUTLET: A single, thin, boneless piece of lean meat, usually cut from the leg or shoulder of veal, lamb or pork.

FAJITAS: Mexican-style dish featuring meat that has been marinated in lime juice, oil and seasonings, then broiled or grilled and cut into strips. The strips are wrapped in warm flour tortillas with onions and bell peppers. The outside beef skirt steak is the traditional cut used.

FILET MIGNON: Popular name for beef tenderloin steak.

FILET, FILLET: Boneless slices of lean meat that form portion cuts of uniform size and shape.

FLAT IRON STEAK: Beef shoulder top blade steak cut from the chuck top blade roast.

LONDON BROIL: Originally a recipe for broiled beef flank steak carved in thin slices, the name London Broil now applies to a variety of usually bone-

less cuts, such as top round steak and chuck shoulder steak that can be broiled.

NEW YORK STRIP STEAK: Fanciful name for a bone-in or boneless beef top loin steak. Sometimes called a New York Steak, Kansas City Steak and Strip Steak in various parts of the country and on menus.

PORTERHOUSE: Steak cut from the beef loin that contains the T-Bone and tenderloin, but is distinguished from the T-Bone steak by its larger tenderloin muscle, which is at least 1 1/4 inches across.

“PRIME” RIB: Generic description that refers to a bone-in or boneless beef rib roast. As a generic description, it does not refer to the quality grade of the roast.

ROAST (AS A MEAT CUT): Cuts of meat larger than steaks, chops or slices (usually two or more inches thick). A roast may contain bone and is often comprised of more than one major muscle. Less tender beef roasts are recommended for moist heat cooking (typically called pot roasts); tender roasts from the rib and loin are recommended for dry heat cooking (may be called oven roasts).

SKIRT: Diaphragm muscle that, in part, separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity. The outside beef skirt steak is the traditional cut used in fajitas.

T-BONE STEAK: Steak cut from the beef short loin that contains the tenderloin muscle and a T-shaped bone. It is distinguished from the Porterhouse steak by its smaller tenderloin muscle, which is not less than 1/2 inch or more than 1 1/4 inches when measured through the center of the tenderloin parallel to the backbone in the short loin.

TRI-TIP: Boneless cut removed from the bottom sirloin, also known as the triangle.

Working With Your Veterinarian For Parasite Control

Internal parasites (stomach and intestinal worms) rob cattle of nutrients, reducing growth rate and weight gains in young animals and hindering optimum production in all classes of cattle. Worms are an added stress, and heavy parasite loads can make the host animal more vulnerable to disease. It is important to deworm cattle at the proper times of year and eliminate egg-laying adult worms before they have a chance to contaminate the pasture with a fresh supply of worm eggs; strategic deworming can help keep reinfection to a low level.

Dr. Tom Yazwinski (University of Arkansas, now retired) says deworming issues and timing will vary somewhat with your region and climate, whether you are in the north or south. Some of the worms will be different in different regions. “Here in the southern areas our major worms are Cooperia (an intestinal worm), Ostertagia (the brown stomach worm) and the barber pole worm (Haemonchus).”

“In a cow-calf operation, my recommendation is to treat cows about 2 months before calving and this is usually the only time of year you need to treat them,” he says. Calving time is when the cow is most immunologically compromised.

“We can hit the worms at a time the cow needs to get rid of them, and she will milk better. With more milk production you get a healthier, stronger, fastergrowing calf. You get several beneficial indirect effects from deworming the mama cow,” he says. Killing the worms when they are most abundant and active in the cow will also halt most of the egg production and recontamination of pastures.

Some people recommend treating the calves at branding age—when they receive their calf vaccinations--or weaning, on some operations. “Having your veterinarian guide your program is essential, doing fecal egg counts on calves, to see how wormy they actually are. Then the calves can be dewormed every spring and fall until they are mature. At that point they will only need to be dewormed once a year,” says Yazwinski.

Your veterinarian can also help guide you regarding which products to use, and when. “You can also find out if your weaned calves have a high enough egg count to warrant deworming. Some operations have such low stocking rates—with cattle spread over large, dry range pastures—that they are unlikely to have very many worms. In our part of the country, however, we can be pretty sure that we’ll have wormy calves by the time we wean them, because they are grazing intensively on small pastures. Out West, by contrast, some cattle won’t need to be dewormed,” he explains.

It is important to do fecal egg counts, to find out the level of worms in the herd. “Regardless of what product you use for deworming, you need to have your vet do an egg count on about 10 animals at the time of treatment, and another egg count on those same animals two weeks later. This is the only way to see if the product you used is working. Why deworm cattle if it isn’t effective? This is the only way you will find out,” he says. Some worms have become resistant to the drugs being used, and you are wasting your time and money, and need to figure out another kind of treatment.

Harboring worms is generally a sub-clinical condition and you really can’t see their effects or know how serious it is unless you do egg counts. “All your cattle are wormy but it’s usually subtle and you don’t have

a group of worm-free animals to show you the difference and exactly what you are losing to worms,” he explains.

“Taking fecal samples and egg counts is the only way to find out how well the drugs work, checking the exact same animals two weeks after the treatment. Those egg counts should be reduced by at least 90% if the product worked,” he says.

“We only check egg counts on animals that are less than 2 years of age. Egg counts on adult cows and bulls won’t give an accurate picture. Those egg counts will typically be low--about 3 to 10 eggs per gram of feces-regardless of how many worms the animal actually has. It’s only in younger animals that the egg counts somewhat reflect the worm burden,” he explains.

In most operations there are problems with worms becoming resistant to the deworming drugs. “This has been an issue for more than 25 years but we are in an era of complacency and people just accept the fact that these drugs aren’t working. No one seems very concerned about it because worms are a subclinical prob-

LIVER FLUKES

lem that usually won’t kill the host. Drug companies apparently don’t see any economic incentive to get a new product out.” There are a couple new ones that are being used in other parts of the world, and some have been looked at in the U.S. but have not gotten past that stage in terms of actually bringing them to market. Even the new drugs being used overseas have seen resistance problems develop within 2 years of use.

“It’s a frustrating challenge, and we have to be thankful that worms are not serious pathogens in cattle; their effects are subclinical. The cattle just lose a little production every day, as opposed by being killed by the parasites,” says Yazwinski. By contrast, sheep and goats have more serious problems with internal parasite.

Some areas of the country, especially the southeast, northwest and north central states also have problems with flukes. “It can be a worse scenario with flukes than with roundworms because there are no drugs that can kill the immature flukes. The animal has to be infected for at least 2 months (with immature flukes causing damage as they migrate through the liver) before you can kill them. We can give a seasonal treatment after they mature, which would be fall-early winter in the South and spring-summer in the North,” says Yazwinski.

“After the animal pick up the infections you have to wait a couple of months and then treat with the one product that does have some efficacy against adult flukes. You are letting the worms do 2 months of destruction in the animal and then killing the adult flukes before they have a chance to pass eggs that would recontaminate the pasture.” Over time, this might help re duce the number of flukes that cattle pick up.

He recommends using a benzimidazole product in adult animals and macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, moxidectin, etc.) in young cattle. “There is so much variance farm-to-farm in resistance issues, but often we feel that the macrocyclic lactones need to be combined with something else to really be effective in younger animals. We can combine them with a benzimidazole or methimazole,” he says. This may or may not be necessary on a cowcalf operation for the replacement animals and weaned calves, but will almost always be necessary in a stocker operation or any operation that periodically brings in new cattle. “When you bring calves in from various places and treat them periodically for worms, you have to use a combination of drugs. They have all the worms they came with, plus sharing worms with all the other cattle.” This is the group that will generally have the most worms, and the hardest cattle group to control parasites. It’s very important to do fecal egg counts and reduction tests in those cattle, to know if what you are using is actually working.

“I gave some talks in Montana and those ranchers don’t even want to hear about roundworms; they are more concerned about lice and flukes. The rest of the country is worried about roundworms, but the North west, North Central and Southeast also have to worry about flukes,” he says.

This is why it pays to work with your herd health veterinarian to help guide your own parasite program, knowing what the problem is in your region and on your ranch. “Your vet has the ability to check fecal samples and do those egg counts,” he says.

All Cattle Must Be Removed By 12:00 p.m.

• A Horn Showcase female entry must have had at least one recorded TLBAA calf, be nursing a calf at side or be confirmed bred by 36 months of age by palpation, ultrasound or BioPRYN blood test conducted 60-days past breeding and be so noted on a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and furnished to the show office.

SATELLITE AWARD WINNER

An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count.

It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.

As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.

GET OF SIRE AND PRODUCE OF DAM

• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.

• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.

• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.

• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.

• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.

• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .

• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.

• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.

The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.

• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.

• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.

• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.

• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.

• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.

ULTIMATE COW & BULL AWARD

• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.

• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.

• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.

HORN SHOWCASE SUPERIOR AWARD

This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.

To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.

Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.

BULL ALLEY

• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.

• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)

• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.

• No minimum straw purchases allowed.

• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.

• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.

DWIGHT PETER OVERLID

May 8, 1946 - February 27, 2024

Dwight Peter Overlid passed away peacefully at the Outlook Health Centre on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024 at the age of 77.

Dwight was born May 8, 1946 at Outlook, Saskatchewan.. He grew up in the Hawarden area, on the old Jacobson farm, now the Overlid farm. He attended grade school at Happy Hollow. He loved animals of all kinds but especially horses, riding and training them. He had recently listed his favorite things as horses, thunder and lightning storms with rain, his kids and grandkids, Ian Tyson music, anything about Charlie Russell, western antiques, a good auction, coffee row, the Rodeo Channel and Miles City, Montana.

He married Sharon Tweet in 1966 and they had three children and a busy life. He worked at Reid Motors, Dept of Highways, Barrich Farms and finally with SSRID. He wasn’t afraid of work and he worked hard, but he also played hard and loved a good drink of whisky. In 1988 he and his partner Deb Lesyk started to establish a broodmare band and also got into raising Texas Longhorn cattle. They moved to their acreage in 1992 and established the Double D Arena. Through the years, Dwight raised, bought and sold some excellent prospects, that were bred for versatility. He liked a good looking horse and they had to be shown at halter as well as in performance. Super Nice, Super Quake and Bar Bobs Dry Doc left a legacy for him in the quarter horse business. He met and enjoyed so many people in his travels while he showed horses and went to sales and auctions. He would tell you he originally only wanted one Texas Longhorn animal, but as the herd expanded there wasn’t anyone more proud then when they did well in the show ring. He even got into judging Texas Longhorn shows and was the first Canadian selected to judge the National Trophy Steer Show in 2008 in

Dwight will be remembered for his genuine smile, his laughter and his never ending story telling. He loved his family and nothing made him happier than his grandkids. In the last four years of his life, his health failed and he was unable to do the things he really wanted to do, but he never quit trying. Getting up into the tractor was difficult but seeing the satisfaction on his face when he could help was well worth all the effort it took to get him out there. And his final pasture tours where he could evaluate the grass and condition of the cows and maybe spot a few deer and watch for his owl family that lived out there, kept him going a little longer.

Through his recent friendship with Pastor Mac, he found answers to his questions and he was finally at peace.

Dwight leaves to mourn his partner, Deb Lesyk. The mother of his children Sharon Wilkes, his three children, Cory (Carrie) and their children Devon (Ashley), Derek (Ashley), and Kailee (Max). Daughter Janine (Simon) and their children Lillian, Sophie, and Olivia. Daughter Angela (Russ) and their children Ryley and Logan. And Deb’s daughters Jan and Amy (Chris). His brother Jerald (Grace), his sister Lucy (Russ) brother Brian and sister Leila (Cliff). Also many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Josie Overlid.

Memorials are published free of charge and must either be submitted by family/close friend, or permission given for us to obtain it online. To submit a memorial request, email myra@tlbaa.org.

TEXAS LONGHORN TRAILS March 2024 | 49 AFFILIATE NEWS

Message Presidents

Howdy! Spring shows, green grass, newborn calves racing around the pastures are some of my favorite things to celebrate during the Spring season! This year, Spring also brings about huge changes for the Class of ‘24 Seniors, including myself! In just a few short months, I’ll be headed o to Aggieland! I’ve been busy planning all the fun things for the next chapter in my life. For many TLBT members, Spring is the time to start thinking about adding to the show string for next year, running for a TLBT O cer or Director position or maybe pursuing activities outside the TLBT. This will be the first year for me that I’m not searching the pastures for my next show calf or campaigning for a position on the TLBT Board which is bittersweet for me. My advice to y’all is to get involved wherever you can! My time with the TLBT has definitely prepared me for my next chapter. Get those applications in to become a member of the TLBT. Run for o cer/director positions with your local a liates. Visit other breeders and search all the pastures, make the plans and set the goals. 10 years goes by in the blink of an eye so make sure every moment counts! Spring is a great time to make new goals, think about the future and take a moment to reflect on the journey that put you here today.

Thanks & Gig ‘Em,

Allis L rie

“Be A Champion”

“Competition - whether it involves Longhorns or people - is healthy when it makes us strive to do our best, to improve, to be strong. Winning, however, should always be a byproduct of competition, not the overriding goal. We all are champions when we do our best.”

What have you learned from showing Longhorns?

For more info or questions regarding the TLBT, please contact us at tlbtadvisors@gmail.com or visit us on social media!

- I have learned many things from showing Texas Longhorns, such as, time management, patience, respect, responsibility, independence, and many more.

What/Who has been your biggest influence while showing Texas Longhorn Cattle?

- My question to you is this: “Who do you look up to the most and why?” My answer to this question is my dad, he has made a huge impact on my life, our longhorn ranch and many more. He is the best person to look up to and I am glad to call him my dad. He has taught me everything I need to know and has helped me prepare for what the future holds for me. He recently started a new business called “EJS Reproductive Services” that we made within our ranch “EJS Ranch”. EJS Reproductive Services means just as it sounds, we do artificial insemination/embryo transfers, bull collections, wean calf program, donor/recip management, herd management and many more things. He has put a lot of work into this new business and even though there are ups and downs, he is still putting in the e ort. I look up to him not simply because he is my dad but because if something needs to be done he will get it done no matter what it is. If someone needs help he is always there to help. If something bad happens and someone calls him, he is always ready to help out. He has not only mad a huge impact on me but also within the longhorn industry. He has help so many people in many di erent ways. The new business has taken o since we first started in the middle of 2023. Many longhorn breeders have decided to come to us if they need any type of work done, not because we have longhorns, but because they trust that their animals will be safe with us. We try to help the, as much as possible and that we give our best opinions/advice when it comes to their herd, when they ask. I will always look up to my dad and follow in his footsteps. As a final point, yes there is a person who has made a significant di erence in my success within the longhorn industry and that person is my dad.

What would you like to accomplish/pursue in your future endeavors? (For example, after high school or college)

- I will be attending WTAMU in the fall to major in animal science. When I receive my degree in Animal Science, I plan to still be a part of all the Longhorn industries. My plan is to open my own large animal vet o ce near my hometown and help with my family business, EJS Reproductive Services on the side. I plan to continue to breed cows for the show ring, futurities and sales.

How Can I Get My Child Started Showing Longhorns?

STEP 1

Unlike most other forms of showing livestock, showing Registered Texas Longhorns does not require a youth to own the animal that it shows. In order to prepare your child to walk into the show ring, first that child must be a junior member of the TLBAA.

Parents are not required to be members unless they choose to become Longhorn owners and be a part of the whole Longhorn experience.

STEP 2

Find a TLBAA Affiliate in your area. You can find a list of affiliates and their contacts on www.tlbaa.org. You may also look at the schedule of events page in the back of Trails Magazine or the calendar tab on the website to find a show near you to visit and meet Longhorn members.

STEP 3

Many breeders have animals that they would love to allow a youth to show. It may be possible for you to arrange to work with a breeder who shows and see if arrangements can be made for your child to learn from them and get their first show experience working with someone already familiar with the experience.

If you already own your own Longhorns, there are camps and workshops you can attend, or maybe some private one-on-one with a Longhorn show person, to show you the ropes of halter breaking and working with your animal.

If you are fortunate enough to purchase a halter-broken animal, maybe even one that has already shown, then talk to someone to understand the process of entering and attending a show to be prepared to make your debut.

STEP 4

Take advantage of information in Trails Magazine, www.tlbaa.org, affiliate activities and showmanship camps to broaden your knowledge and gain experience. Try to enter as many shows as you can, even if you don’t think you are doing well. Nothing can be done well without learning and practice.

STEP 5

During all the steps above and beyond, have fun! Enjoy making new friends and watching your child build character, learn life lessons and develop skills that will help them throughout the rest of their life! Aim for the trophies but focus on the rewards of the journey.
