EDITOR’S NOTES

MORE THAN THE COLOR

I love fall. I’m originally from the mountains of southwestern Virginia, and I miss seeing the trees change color. Maybe that is part of what I love about doing a publication filled with Texas Longhorns and their endless diversity of colors, horn sizes, and shapes.

But fall is invigorating to me for reasons beyond the beautiful color changes. It’s a feeling in the air as the crisp coolness moves in. It’s the harvest and seeing months’ worth of labor pay o . It’s a bit of relaxation between harvest and preparing to face a cold winter.

The Texas Longhorn is the same, in that it embodies so much more beyond a colorful coat. It is a feeling of connection with the rich history of adaptation and survival, culminating in an animal that is still valuable in today’s market. It is a sense of connection that most breeders feel with their Longhorns—one that seems much warmer and “fall-ish” than with most cattle. It is the remarkable fruit of owning livestock that are hardy, long-lived, and reproductive powerhouses.

The same overwhelming sense of joy I get when I am in the woods or looking across a pasture at the walls of color with a sweatshirt on to ward o the chill of the air and that smell that only fall carries with it... I think that is the feeling Longhorn owners try to convey when they speak of the peace, happiness, and contentment that watching a pasture full of Longhorns grazing—or hand-feeding treats to them—brings in the midst of the craziness of this world.

So, while fall is no longer a break in my life—partly because I’m in Texas, where fall colors are not as diverse and are short-lived, and mostly because I am a magazine editor and fall ushers in one of the busiest times of the year for Trails Magazine—in the middle of the craziness I relish the moments to stop and breathe in a minute of our fleeting fall-ish air, to look at the photos my sister sends me of changing trees back home, and to enjoy the beauty of the animals our breeders celebrate all year ‘round in the pages I put together each month.

With that said, I do hope lots of you choose to share the colorful bounty and submit your 2025 calves for the Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest. You can find the details inside. Those entries make for a great fall bounty of cuteness and amazing diversity. Hope to see yours soon!

Blessings!

Plan Ahead for the 2026 TLBAA A.I. Sire Directory

Every other year Trails publishes the photo, A.I. number, registration information, pedigree and current owner of all TLBAA certified A.I. Sires. An alphabetical index makes it easy locate the sires you are interested in. It’s a great reference for people who are looking for genetics to improve their herd, as well as a great historical reference when looking at background pedigree animals.

This listing is free and any bull certified by June 1, 2026 will be automatically included.

The first item to take care of is making sure you submit any bulls that are to be newly certified in 2026 as quickly as possible. There are health test to complete and DNA parent verification to process, if not already on file. There are many variables that can a ect the speed of the process, just keep in mind that in can take as long as 3 months to get everything completed. Start the process as soon as you know you wish to have a bull certified!

Photgraphs are the second item needed. If you own an existing A.I. sire and you would like to update their photo, or you need to send in a photo of a newly certified bull, simply email myra@tlbaa.org with the photo, the full name of the bull and if possible, the A.I. number. If you send a photo and do not get a reply acknowledgin recipt, please verify that it made it through by sending a second email without the attachment or calling the o ce and asking to speak to Myra.

The name under the bull will be the owner in HORNS at the time the list is pulled. If a partnership or owner changes but paperwork has not been submitted, please get that taken care of by June 1st as well.

If you run an ad in this issue promoting the bull, their o spring or genetic background, that ad will be referenced by page number on the bull’s listing. It’s a great way to give additional incentive to people to use the genetics. Ad inquiries can go to myra@tlbaa.org.

Pasture Management Stocking Rates and Rotation

On most farms, pasture management is the most crucial factor involved in keeping cattle. Your total acreage will dictate how many cattle you can graze, as will your climate (whether you have year round grazing or just seasonal grass growth), and how you rotate or manage the pasture. You can always grow more grass (and hence support more cattle) with well managed pasture, grazed in a rotation system, than you can when using it as one big field. In the latter situation some plants are overgrazed and may weaken and die out, while some of the least favorite plants may never be eaten unless the cattle run out of better feed.

HOW MANY CATTLE WILL YOUR PASTURE SUPPORT?

On average, a good quality pasture--good soil, containing palatable forage plants--that gets adequate moisture from rainfall or irrigation will easily feed 2 adult cattle per acre such as yearlings or dry cows (but maybe not quite as many lactating cows because their need are greater and their calves are also eating grass) during the growing season. Diligent mob grazing—moving the cattle frequently from one very small portion of the pasture to another and then allowing it to completely regrow before returning to that same piece—will increase this stocking rate.

It will take more pasture to feed a cow/ calf pair; they may need twice the energy at peak lactation than the cows did when they were dry. When you go from a dry cow at maintenance to peak lactation, you have doubled the stocking rate on the farm in terms of forage demand, even before you add in what the calf grazes.

be native grasses. Many of these are quite nutritious, but not as productive (not as many tons of forage per acre) as tame grasses that depend on regular watering (from rain or irrigation). Without irrigation, it takes more land to raise cattle in the arid West, for instance, where annual rainfall might be 6 to 12 inches of moisture, compared to a farm in the East or Midwest where rainfall might be 25 inches or more.

On native hillside pastures in the West it might take 10 to 50 acres to feed a cow and calf for one month. Overgrazing this type of pasture will damage the plants and eventually kill them. Native grasses evolved being grazed (by elk and bison) and are healthiest if grazed during their growing season, but were grazed by wan-

When you go from a dry cow at maintenance to peak lactation you have double the forage demand, even before you consider what the calf grazes.

A good rule of thumb would be one acre per cow/ calf pair, and you might need to adjust this figure a little to fit your pastures. After the peak of the growing season, when climate becomes hotter and/or drier, it may take 50% more pasture acreage to feed the same animals if you are depending on it to regrow that same season. In a climate that has cold winters, grass growth will slow or stop after weather turns cold in late fall.

If you live in a dry climate and part or all of your land is not feasible to irrigate (too steep, or no available water source or water right), forage plants will likely

dering herds that grazed them once or twice in a season and moved on. Repeated grazing by confined animals throughout the growing season may weaken and kill the plants. Dryland (non-irrigated) pastures always take more acreage per animal because the grass grows more slowly and there is more space between plants. Thus the number of cattle you can raise without supplemental purchased feed will depend not only on the amount of acreage you have, but also on the climate, access to irrigation water, soil types and forage plants.

It’s often most economical to calve during the time of year your grass is starting to grow, rather than too early in spring when the cows are still on hay. If cows have their increased nutritional needs during peak lactation met by pasture, and calves are weaned before

the cows need hay in late fall, you save money on hay. Your calves may not be as big in the fall as early-born calves, but you’ll have less winter feed cost associated with raising the later-born calf.

For best results in grazing management, look at forage demand rather than cattle numbers--and try to match the number of cattle with what the pasture will produce. Be observant and aware of what’s happening with the pasture and cattle, and flexible enough to adjust the stocking rate according to the pasture conditions, and to learn from your mistakes.

OPTIMAL ROTATION

If you have good quality tame pastures (with adequate rainfall or irrigation) you can get maximum production per acre by using rotational grazing, timing the grazing of each small pasture segment when the plants are most ready, then letting them regrow while you graze another part. Giving each pasture enough rest to recover before coming back to it may allow you to regraze it several times during a growing season.

Grass grows in three stages. Stage one is when it comes out of dormancy, after winter, or after being harvested--as hay or by grazing--down to short stubble. It takes awhile for it to grow enough leaf area to capture enough solar energy to grow rapidly (phase two). Cattle prefer phase one grass because it is tender, succulent, and high in nutritional quality.

If a pasture is grazed continually through the season, without rest periods facilitated by rotation, cattle keep going back to the same short plants, seeking out phase one grasses. This stresses the plants because they don’t have enough leaf area to support their maintenance needs. Plants have maintenance requirements and growth requirements, just like animals do. In phase one, the grass is just maintaining itself but the small amount of growth is very high quality, and grazing animals really like to eat it.

If the pasture is rested during phase one, the plants start to accumulate enough leaf area to where they can grow more swiftly (phase two). This fast growth will continue until the mass of the plant takes a lot of energy to maintain its large structure. By then some of the lower leaves will be shaded by upper ones and some leaves start dying. When the plant gets to that point it goes into phase three, and growth rate slows dramatically. This is the phase in which it would be cut for hay; the plant is as large as it’s going to get. If you are grazing pasture, however, rather than cutting it as hay, you may want to keep as much grass as possible in stage two (rapid growth)--for best total production during the growing season.

The ideal situation is to keep cattle o the pasture until grass enters phase two and is not as easily damaged or set back by grazing. Put cattle into the pasture when the grass is at least 4 to 6 inches tall (depending on species—some you might want a little taller--and let

cattle graze until they eat it down to about 3 inches. If you graze it all the way back to phase one, stripping the plant of its leaves, it will take much longer to recover. It needs a longer rest period before you can graze it again. This may make the rest period longer than you can afford, if you only have a few pastures.

Overgrazing is defined as a plant being grazed before it has a positive carbohydrate balance--such as too early in the growing season, or continuously eating it down before it gains enough reserves. In a continuous grazing situation, when animals stay in the same pasture year round or all through summer, overgrazing occurs on the favorite plants because cattle keep grazing them back to phase one. This can happen if you have cattle in a pasture too long or the rest period is too short in a rotation system. In a continuously grazed pasture you’ll see overgrazed areas (phase one grass) right next to mature patches the cattle won’t eat (phase three) because the plants are over-mature and coarse--with no phase two grass. If you have abundant rainfall or do a good job of irrigating, and keep the number of animals in balance with the pasture, you can get by with continuous grazing (not having to rotate pastures). The common problems in this situation (in most climates) are temperature extremes, and

not always being able to have the grass watered when it needs it. Growth rate fluctuates, with grass growing very fast for awhile and then slowing; it’s hard to keep all the grass in phase two. Rotational grazing gives you more chance to try to hold grass in phase two for as much of the season as possible.

FENCING FOR ROTATIONAL GRAZING

Overgrazing occurs in continuous grazing

situations because cattle keep their favorite plants grazed back to phase one.

Depending on your situation, you may want permanent fence or portable fencing to divide your pastures, fence o ditch banks or other small grazing areas from hayfields, etc. If there’s a chance you might want to use the field or pasture as a whole (or put up hay on it), use temporary fence to divide it.

Temporary electric fencing is inexpensive and can be quickly and easily moved if you use push-in posts--and you don’t need gates. You can move cattle from one area to another just by setting 2 tall sticks or pieces of PVC pipe in the fence line for a moment to raise and hold the wire at a height the cattle can go under it and into the new section of pasture. Once cattle learn they can do this, it’s easy to move them through the fence, without needing a gate. They see what you are doing and you can call them, and they want to come and go through the “gate” to new grass.

Don’t Let Deadlines Be The Death of You

There’s already a lot to plan for in 2026. Big spring sale deadlines are looming. Trails Magazine issue deadlines are always approaching. Show deadlines are constant. Futurities are growing, and there are new ones each year. It can all become overwhelming and confusing if you don’t find ways to be prepared for the never-ending cycle of events and deadlines in the Longhorn industry.

The good news is there are lots of things you can do to be better prepared to meet the deadlines of the events or marketing opportunities you wish to be a part of. Here are three of the main things to help you get ahead.

1. Know Your Sources.

Most Longhorn events take advantage of Facebook, the Trails Magazine event calendar, the TLBAA online event calendar, and their own websites. Search Facebook or the web for 2026 events by name, or simply by “Longhorn Futurity,” “Longhorn Show,” or “Longhorn Sale” if you do not know specific event names.

In addition to the calendar in Trails, many Longhorn sales are listed on HiredHandLive.com, and sale or futurity information for some events is available at HuntingtonSales.com. Huntington Sales also lists information about the National Longhorn Futurity Race and all participating futurities.

Please note: The TLBAA lists event information at no charge, but the event must reach out to us with their dates, location, and contact information to be included. We do not search social media or the web for information for our calendars.

2. Keep Your Own Calendar.

Whether it’s a desk calendar, a digital calendar, or a day planner, make note of the dates of events or marketing opportunities you would like to be a part of, as well as the deadlines to participate. It’s great to do this with both a yearly and monthly view. If recurring

events haven’t published deadlines or dates for 2026 yet, go by last year’s and pencil those in, updating them as they are announced.

If there is a social media page or website for an event, check those periodically for any updates or changes in date, deadline, or venue. It is ALWAYS best to go directly to the source for your most up-to-date information.

3. Meet the Requirements.

Sales and shows both usually require health certificates for participants. Be sure to check requirements for your events and plan accordingly to get to the vet and complete any required testing or examinations within the timeframe required—usually within 30 days of the actual event.

Sales require registration papers and a good photo. If you’ve fallen behind on registering some of your herd, go ahead and get caught up. Branding is required for registration, and waiting until the last minute and showing up with an unbranded animal will likely prevent you from being in the sale or event. Having a fresh brand that hasn’t started to heal yet is not ideal either and could count against you in the ring.

Take photos of your potential consignments early and in good weather. You can always update the photo before the catalog goes to print or in e-blasts or social posts closer to sale time. A younger version of an animal looking slick and in good shape is better than a hurried photo taken last minute that doesn’t present the animal at its best.

It is critical to read the rules and/or terms & conditions of any sale, show, or futurity each year so you’re aware of any changes that may have been made. With growth in participation and often limited entries or consignments allowed for each event, meeting deadlines with all requirements met is more important now than ever.

Make plans and book rooms now. There’s no better place to kick o 2026!

2025 Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest –A Great Way to Promote Your Program!

In the Texas Longhorn industry there are events that look at two out of three aspects of the breed, conformation and horn, but never has there been an event that features the uniqueness of colors so evident in the breed. The “Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest” is respectfully titled after longtime Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association President, Rodger Damrow, who was very fond of colorful calves.

This is a great opportunity to let people see the results of your breeding program for a very low cost$20 per animal entered. All entries will be published in March 2026 Trails Magazine.

So get your cameras out and start snapping! Try to remember to not use zoom too much as it can lessen the quality of the photo if using a cell phone.

Remember also to send the file at full or original size. Please do not let your email reduce the file. We’re looking forward to seeing all those beautiful calves!

Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award

Lloyd Esh, Dreamwood Farms

New Holland, Pennsylvania

Mr. Lloyd Esh, Dreamwood Farms was established in 2011 in beautiful Elverson, PA.

Lloyd bought his first 2 Longhorns from Robert Combs. They were weanling heifers out of Overkill and Drag Iron. The same genetics are still running deep at Dreamwood Farms. Lloyd is determined to make the longhorn breed better with structure, conformation and milking ability. With that mind set and properly researched crosses, each generation is getting better than the last. With the consistency of elite productivity and quality Dreamwood Farms has become a top seller at Longhorn sales across the country, including 108” $275,000 DW Fast Stu . Lloyd is also the breeder of the hottest young bull in the industry Schwarbomb! Mr. Esh recently started showing one of his prize heifers DW Sweet Emotions in NLFR and is currently undefeated. As a small breeder, Lloyd Esh is the epitome of what the Longhorn industry should emulate. Better cattle for a better future!

Dreamwood Farms has humbly become one of the consistent, elite programs in the Texas Longhorn breed. Mr. Esh has set himself apart as a breeder by developing maternal family lines and utilizing bulls that he recognizes for their productive qualities to meet his goalsnot by following others. The consistent nature for which he produces elite cattle is rarely seen in a diverse breed known for unpredictability. His dedication to quality, and improvement of his herd, is obvious and impressive. Mr. Esh fully embodies the definition of a Breeder, and the work he has done makes him the ideal candidate for TLBAA Breeder of the Year.

Mike Davis, LM Longhorns

Dallas, TX

We are honored to nominate Mike Davis for the Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award. Since beginning his program in 2016, Mike has dedicated himself fully to the Texas Longhorn breed. His operation is recognized for producing some of the most complete and well-rounded cattle in the industry, with a clear focus on protecting and preserving the heritage of the breed.

Mike has worked tirelessly to maintain the original style of the Texas Longhorn, while still producing animals that are competitive in today’s market. His program is widely respected for consistency, particularly in horn growth, structural soundness, and overall balance. As a result, his cattle consistently rank among the top o erings at premier sales, with his genetics in high demand by breeders across the country.

What truly sets Mike apart is his unwavering commitment to protecting the heritage of the Texas Longhorn. Every decision in his breeding program reflects a balance of history and progress—ensuring that the qualities that define the breed are never lost. His results speak for themselves, as his cattle represent the kind of Longhorns that both honor tradition and advance the future of the breed.

Mike Davis is 100% dedicated to the Texas Longhorn industry. His passion, vision, and proven results make him an outstanding representative of what this award embodies. For these reasons, we proudly nominate Mike Davis for the Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award.

Terry & Tammy King Westville, Florida

I have been in the Longhorn business for about 40 years. I met Terry & Tammy King approximately 30 years ago. During the time I have known them, their breeding program has made steady improvement in the quality of their cattle. Their cattle are colorful

with good conformation and horn. They understand the value of genetics and are constantly upgrading the quality of their cattle by using some of the best bulls in the industry. They are the only breeder to have three of their homegrown heifers currently ranked in the top eight of the 2025 National Longhorn Futurity Race. This speaks volumes for their breeding program. They have worked hard to promote the Longhorn industry in the Southeast, always eager and willing to help new and old breeders alike in any way they can. Terry has also served on the TLBAA and SETLA Board of Directors in the past. I feel they are excellent candidates for the 2025 Dave Evans Breeder of the Year.

Kurt Twining, Silver T Longhorns

Dallas, TX

It is with great pleasure and a profound sense of respect that I nominate Kurt Twining of Silver T Ranch for the Dave Evans Breeder of the Year award. Since Kurt & Glenda established their program in 1999 with just seven cows and one bull, Kurt has dedicated himself to the betterment of the Texas Longhorn breed, growing his herd into a premier operation that now spans over 300 head. His journey is a testament to vision, strategic breeding, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Kurt’s program began with a strong foundation, built upon his first herd sire, Cimaron, a 53” son of Billy Bob. His dedication quickly paid o , culminating in a significant achievement when his animal, Ginger, won the TLBAA World Championship. This early success set a high standard that has defined Silver T Ranch ever since. The pivotal moment that truly reshaped his breeding program, however, came at the Mosser Production Sale, where he acquired the 14-month-old heifer M Arrow Cha-Ching for $7,000. Her genetics became the cornerstone of his future success. The strategic flush of M Arrow Cha-Ching in 2015 was a game-changer, producing the illustrious Heart Breaker and Happy 9.

Beyond his ranch, Kurt is a pillar of the industry. He actively supports the Longhorn community through robust buying and selling. Annually, he transacts approximately $200,000 in cattle, a figure matched by his yearly investment back into the breed through purchases. The cycle of investment not only fuels his own program, but also stimulates the market for other breeders. His commitment is further demonstrated by his role as an owning partner of the prestigious Texas Longhorn Treasure Heifer Sale, an initiative that showcases the finest young females and strengthens the breed for future generations. Kurt Twining’s tireless work, genetic innovation and unwavering support for the Texas Longhorn industry make him an ideal candidate for the Dave Evans Breeder of the Year award. His journey from a humble start to a powerhouse herd exemplifies the very spirit of dedication and excellence that this award celebrates.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award

David & Bracy Wars,

W5 Texas Longhorns

Trinity, Texas

David & Bracy Wars have been breeding and raising Texas Longhorns for three decades, which is just about as close to a lifetime as one can find among TLBAA members. David promotes the breed by actively serving as a Texas Longhorn judge and sharing his knowledge with others through social media.

Heart Breaker has become a monumental figure in the Longhorn industry, producing four daughters that have surpassed the prestigious 100” TTT mark, with many others exceeding 90” TTT. The legacy of Heart Breaker is evident in the accomplishments of his notable daughters, including Silver Abby, Silver River, Silver Ruth, Silver Meridith, Silver Moon, Silver California, Silver Heart and Silver Star. Through these animals, Kurt has proven his ability to consistently produce some of the breed’s longest-horned and fastest-growing cattle.

In addition to his ground-breaking female lines, Kurt has a history of breeding and owning top-tier herd sires, including BR Real Deal, Call of Duty, Happy 9, Vindicator’s Edge, Dark Dust, Butch Cassidy, Never Forget and KC Just Respect. His foresight in genetics, combining powerful herd sires with his elite female foundation, has allowed him to build a program that is both genetically deep and phenotypically superior.

In addition to promoting the breed, the award is for someone who preserves the breed. David and Bracy still raise and promote cattle that are similar to the cattle that were available 25 years ago. While many people have pursued the longest horns attainable, the Wars have continued to preserve cattle from the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. These cattle are moderate in size and moderate in horn length, with plenty of twist. They have preserved and promoted the breed without chasing fads and trends.

Ann

Gravett, G&G Longhorns

Rochelle, Virginia

Ann Gravett should receive the Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award for her enduring dedication to the Texas Longhorn Breed, a commitment that has enriched the genetics, fostered the community, and promoted the industry for nearly four decades. Her legacy, forged with her late husband Ben Gravett and continued with fierce determination, reflects the spirit of the award’s namesake through tireless preservation and promotion. Starting G&G Longhorns in 1988, Ann has been at the forefront of genetic advancement, stewarding a program

TLBAA SPECIAL AWARDS

that has owned some of the most influential cattle in the industry. The list of these legendary animals – including BL Monika, Awesome Strawberry, Wiregrass Magolia and Sittin Bull, whom was syndicated for $1,000,000 – is a testament to G&G Longhorns pursuit of excellence and profound impact on the breed’s bloodlines.

Ann’s contributions extend far beyond her own herd through her unparalleled work as an event organizer. For many years, the Gravett’s hosted a sale near their home in Virginia know as the Gravett-Babington Sale with the late Paul Babington, starting in 1992 to o er their cattle and also to provide a place for their customers to market through consignments. Since then, the sale has become the successful Cherry Blossom Sale hosted by the TLMA, then the TLCA, and now by the Longhorn Legacy Group. The Gravetts are the founders of the successful Millennium futurity which began in Virginia in 2000 and ex panded the breed’s exposure in the Eastern U.S., bring ing breeders now nationwide to compete and increase value to our industry’s young females. Her expertise and dedication have also been the force behind the highly successful Texas Longhorn Legacy Sale and the Cherry Blossom Sale, ensuring premium platforms for breeders to market their cattle. Ann is a constant and reliable pres ence at nearly every Longhorn event coast-to-coast, wellrespected figure and a true industry pillar. Her selfless support for the Longhorn community is evident through her role as a major sponsor of numerous futurities, sales and events. This consistent financial and logistical sup port is vital for the health and growth of the industry. Her and Ben’s generous donations to the TLBAA Museum further underscore their commitment to preserving the breed’s heritage for future generations. Since Ben’s passing in 2014, Ann has courageously continued to manage G&G Longhorns alone, a testament to her strength and unwavering passion. Her lifelong impact – as a breeder, mentor, event organizer, and promoter – makes Ann Gravett a profoundly deserving recipient of the Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award.

Bob Loomis, Loomis Ranch

Marietta, Oklahoma

Bob’s reputation as a legendary horseman is equally remarkable. He is a seven-time World Reining Champion, was inducted into the NRHA Hall of Fame in 1992, honored by the AQHA Hall of Fame in 2021 and recognized by the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2017. Most recently, his legacy within the Longhorn industry was further acknowledged with his induction into the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association Hall of Fame 2024.

Bob Loomis’ lifetime of achievement exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award His, vision, pioneering spirit and dedication to excellence have left an indelible mark not only on the Texas Longhorn Breed but on the broader western heritage. For these reasons, we are proud to nominate Bob Loomis for the distinguished honor.

Robert & Kim Richey

Triple R Ranch

San Angelo, Texas

Robert & Kim Richey have been raising longhorns for 30+ years at the Triple R Ranch in San Angelo, TX. Most folks will recognize them through 28 years of promotion through the Butler Breeder’s Invitation Sale. They are an integral part of the sale since its inaugural sale in 1998. Robert spent many months, every year, talking to consignors and putting together the sale catalog, while Kim put together consignor gifts, most are handmade, putting together donated items to be auctioned o , where the money goes directly back to the sale, and setting up a booth to sell various items.

Robert served on the TLBAA Board of Directors and was the Chairman of the Board in 2010. In 2006, the Richeys won the Dave Evans Breeder of the Year award, for their years of producing top cattle across the industry. In 2012, they won the Jack Phillips Award, which was about the time the HORNS system was implemented to all members of the TLBAA.

It is with great honor that we nominate Bob Loomis for the Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob’s contributions to the Texas Longhorn breed and the livestock industry as a whole span decades, marked by ground-breaking achievements, historic firsts, and a Bob purchased his first two longhorns in 1977 for $400 each, beginning a journey that would forever impact the breed. His vision and commitment have made him one of the most influential breeders in Longhorn history. He was the first breeder to raise a cow measuring over 90 in. tipto-tip, and he is the breeder of Cowboy Tu Chex, holder of the Guinness World Record for horn length in a bull. In addition to his influence in the Longhorn World.

In 2014, the TLBAA celebrated its 50th anniversary where a special logo for the occasion was voted on by the membership. Kim Richey’s, along with Lonnie Shan, logo won the contest and was the o cial logo of the anniversary. The Richey’s also put together a fund raiser for a group of Butler Breeders to come together to purchase a heifer as part of the 50th Anniversary Heifer Sale, where the money went back to the TLBAA. The same heifer was then donated back to the Butler Sale, where it raised additional funds for that sale.

Both were instrumental in starting the West Texas Longhorn A liate (WTLA). They both volunteered their time at various youth shows in the region. In 2013, Robert created the “My Favorite Cow” project as a fund raiser and opportunity for breeders across the country to show their favorite cattle in Trails. All these accolades are deserving of the Elmer Parker award but for me they have become family. Whether you call on a Tuesday morning looking

for advice on your breeding program, to stepping up to do color commentating at a sale at the last minute, you are never met with hesitation. I am honored to nominate Robert & Kim Richey for this year’s Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jack Phillips Award

Johnny Hicks

Hicks Texas Longhorns

Dowling,

Michigan

Since 2005, Johnny Hicks of Hicks Texas Longhorns has been a steadfast advocate for the Texas Longhorn breed and its community of breeders. Beginning his journey with just two Longhorns, Johnny has demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing the breed, strengthening associations, and supporting fellow breeders with humility and integrity. Over the past two decades, Johnny has contributed significantly through leadership and service. He served on the Board of Directors for six years, including two years as Chairman of the Board, and held the position of Horn Showcase Chair for two years. His commitment to excellence was recognized with the Milestone Needs Improvement Award, personally presented by Bob Loomis. For more than a decade, Johnny has faithfully served as President of the Great Lakes Texas Longhorns Association, ensuring the success of regional programs and opportunities for breeders. Throughout his journey, Johnny has sought and valued the guidance of respected leaders such as Tim Smith, Bob Loomis, Mike McLeod, and Dick Lowe, carrying forward their legacy of stewardship. At the same time, his wife, Missy, has been an invaluable partner in every endeavor – always ready to lend her support, share her time, and help others. Together, they have built a reputation for generosity and selflessness, never hesitating to step in when fellow breeders or associations needed assistance. Johnny’s contributions reflect a rare combination of leadership, service, and humility. Alongside Missy, he has worked tirelessly for the Texas Longhorn breed and for the community of breeders – often without seeking recognition. These qualities embody the very spirit of Jack Phillips Award, making Johnny Hicks a most deserving candidate for this distinguished honor, with Missy’s unwavering support and dedication equally worthy of recognition.

Bill & Molly Crozier C4 Longhorns

Woodville, Texas

Bill and Molly go above and beyond in promoting the Longhorn breed - specifically the Butler Breed. They have been enthusiastic promoters of Texas Longhorns both at sales and on social media. Bill & Molly are the first to reach out and help fellow Longhorn breeders, not

waiting to be asked. From helping to work your herd, haul your cattle to helping out if storm damage strikes – when they see a need they jump right in. They have provided mentorship to new breeders, always going the extra mile to help anyone in need of hauling, branding, or photographing that were unable to do so on their own. They are full of knowledge about the breed and have worked tirelessly building a phenomenal herd. They are an intricate part of the Butler Breeders Invitational Sale, from donating auction items, consigning and buying cattle and pitching in to help wherever needed. They bought the August 2025 cover of Trails Magazine to promote the 28th Butler Breeders Invitational Sale. They have been sellers of the high lot and buyers of the high lot several times. Their daughter is a teacher in the arts at a local school. For a fund raiser every year, the Croziers donate a Longhorn steer to help raise money for the arts program. The Butler Longhorn Museum in Kemah, TX, reached out to Longhorn breeders for donations. The Croziers came up with a fund raising idea to raise money for the museum and even helped them get organized in their new location. They drove over a hundred miles with a backhoe to help a fellow Longhorn breeder devastated with flooding that caused fences to be wiped out. Please consider Bill & Molly for this award. These actions have been done selflessly without recognition. To top it o , they are the kindest, nicest and most helpful couple you could meet! Bill and Molly Crozier exemplify the Jack Phillips award.

Randy Murry

Cleveland, Texas

While one could nominate Randy for a lifetime achievement award at age 41, one could say his story and contributions are not over by any stretch. He has, until recently, been working within the industry to promote the breed quietly through others. To know him, is to appreciate his knowledge that he shares with breeders across America. He doesn’t have to do this - he wants to see others succeed. Loaning and sharing bull genetics to smaller breeders, helping a youth pick out a potential futurity animal, taking the call late into the night o ering advice on healthcare and sale selections. Often providing sale and breeding advice that proves directionality correct for specific reasons. His quiet behind the scenes support is not for recognition, he doesn’t need that as he manges one of the largest and most promising herds of Longhorn cattle there has ever been. Yet his approach is building a following in the industry. He graciously supports events all around the country, even thought often he cannot be there in person. Randy has created so many partnerships across the breed to help others get the recognition for animals they would love to own outright or don’t have the facilities to accommodate. He has become a huge supporter of the TLBAA through continious advertising, sales and always sharing quality stock to others that solidifies his brand. He often has one of the high sellers at major sale o erings. His

work on the inaugural Texas Treasure Sale demonstrated sophisticated marketing and the alignment of so many breeders large and small for a $11,500 average. Yet he quietly shared the success with his three partners, with an eye to the future. If there is a Longhorn event, he is aware and looking for the opportunity to make it better. Randy has given his time, knowledge, wisdom and generosity to support our Longhorn industry at the highest level. We need more Randy Murrys in our breed and not just for the cattle, it’s his vision and unwavering support that we all benefit from. Please consider Randy for the Jack Phillips Award for all he does quietly and behind the scenes to help each and every one of us strive to be better breeder of this ma jestic breed.

MEL RALEY RISING STAR AWARD

Bonifay, Florida

It is with great pleasure that I nominate Travis Johnson of LTJ Longhorns for the Mel Raley Rising Star Award. In his short time as a breeder, Travis has demonstrated the kind of enthusiastic involvement and sustained e ort that makes a lasting positive impact on our community, truly embodying the spirit of Mel Raley. Travis’ commitment to the Texas Longhorn breed is remarkable. Establishing LTJ Longhorns in 2022, he has already assembled an incredible herd of top-quality cattle, focusing on elite genetics, conformation and impressive horns. While many new breeders start small and slowly scale up, Travis has invested significant time and resources to develop a high caliber program from the very beginning. His deliberate and discerning approach to acquiring foundational genetics, including purchases from respected breeders like Terry King, Jimmy Jones, and Hudson Longhorns, show a deep dedication to excellence. He thoughtfully diversified his bloodlines to build a herd he is proud of, a testament to his long-term vision. Beyond his rapid success with his own herd, Travis has become a dedicated and visible member of the Longhorn community. He is an active participant in sales and futurities, demonstrating his engagement with the industry and his willingness to showcase his breeding program. Furthermore, he generously supports the breed and fellow enthusiasts through his sponsorship of events. Travis’ positive impact is not limited to his own ranch. He

is known as a great and hardworking individual who is always willing to lend a hand and share his passion. His gratitude for the mentorship he has received, and his openness to share his own experiences, reflects the same generous spirit that defined Mel Raley. In just a few years, Travis has proven himself to be a rising star. His tireless work ethic, passion for the breed, and active participation in the TLBAA community have made a powerful and positive impression. I believe he is a truly deserving candidate for this prestigious award.

Curtis Hamer 2H Longhorns

Friedens, Pennsylvania

Always a friendly face and pleasure to work with. Always willing to help and participate in events. Mentored by the late Mr. Timcheck and doing an excellent job following in his footsteps and carrying on the legacy of his herd.

Je & Marcia Wilson

Cedartown, Georgia

I would like to nominate Je & Marcia Wilson for the 2025 Mel Raley Rising Star Award. They purchased their first Longhorn in 2022. Since that time they have bought cows from private parties and through Longhorn auctions. Along with now raising their own calves they currently have about 30 head at this time. This year is the first time they will have calves from heifers that they raised and they are very excited. They have used A.I. along with their own bull to improve their genetics and will have 2025 calves sired by some of the best bulls in the industry. Their bull, M7 Double Jack, is currently leading the National Longhorn Futurity Race and they have a heifer in the top 12. Je served on the STLA Board of Directors before becoming President in 2024. His idea of having a “Futurity within a Futurity” gave SETLA members a chance to compete against other SETLA members for buckles and awards. Je and Marcia have been very involved in the futurities by showing and sponsoring. They are looking forward to the future breeding, showing and enjoying their Longhorns.

GREAT PLAINS TEXAS LONGHORN ASSOCIATION

AFFILIATE UPDATES

Making Plans for 2026

The Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association and its members are already busy planning for next year. Excitement about Texas Longhorns continues to spawn more events along with new members and breeders in the region.

Here are a few events you might want to plug into your 2026 calendar: Jan. 30 – Feb. 7, 2026 Several members of the GPTLA will again join forces to present Texas Longhorns to the attendees of the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapdi City, SD. The BHSS is one of the largest events in South Dakota, and draws 300,000 people from a 13-state area. For years, Longhorns have been excluded from this event. These GPTLA members are confronting that short-sighted mentality with great success. The vendor booth last year drew enthusiastic support and interest. This year promises to be even better!! For information pleases call Gordon Howie 605-381-3998 or Mark/Lisa Sanders 605-255-4749

May 15-16 , 2026 Pride of the Prairie futurity and production sale in Murdo, SD. This will be the first Longhorn futurity held in South Dakota. It is being met with a lot of excitement. GPTLA members are lining up to participate, and the GPTLA is one of the prime sponsors of this event. Chris Nix and Shawn Tobin are active members of the GPTLA. They have stepped up to promote the breed and o er an opportunity for producers to showcase (and sell) their cattle. Contact Chris at 605-530-5104 or Shawn at 605-545-2897

Aug. 14-15-16 GPTLA World Qualifying Shows. This will be the 9th year of World Qualifying Shows, sponsored by the GPTLA. There will be three shows, including a “points only” show and a miniatures show. It will be held again at the Fall River Fairgrounds. This venue has proven to be a huge favorite of attendees. It is a family friendly facility with on site concessions and camping spaces. Motel rooms are available within walking distance, and many opportunities for visiting tourist attractions are just a short distance. We encourage you to include the shows in Wyoming and Nebraska and then visit South Dakota for this fun weekend. Show chairman is Shawn Tobin 605-545-2897

Sept. 26, 2026 The 2nd Annual Fall Roundup Sale will be a must on your 2026 calendar. The first sale was in 2025. This is another event sponsored by the GPTLA that saw wonderful participation. One of the exciting things we saw (as trailers FILLED the parking area ) was that many of the people attending were folks not previously engaged in any GPTLA events. There was a good contingent of enthusiasts who were first-timers, just beginning to build their herds. The GPTLA gains several new members as a result of this sale. I think everyone was holding their breath to see how/whether this sale would succeed. Everyone was over the moon with the results, and many people who were not participants in the first sale have already made it known that they will be part of the 2026 sale. If you want to join us, contact Gordon Howie 605-381-3998 or Mark/Lisa Sanders 605-255-4749

All things considered, you can judge the health of an organization by what they accomplish. That being the case, the GPTLA is indeed healthy, strong, and growing! We want to invite you to join us as we promote Texas Longhorn Cattle and help producers

For more information on The Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association, check out our website at www.gptla. com

The GPTLA membership continues to welcome new member producers (you can join regardless of where you live). We would LOVE to have you join us! $350 lifetime membership dues or $35.00 annual.

Presidents Message

Hey y’all! It’s getting chilly here in Texas! I will tell you I cannot wait for that thanksgiving turkey later this month.

The fall show season has been in full swing, and it’s been a blast so far. The TLBT board has been cooking up some great new content and things to present at upcoming shows and FWSSR! We can’t wait to show you all what we have in store.

For this Trails Magazine edition, the topic is facilities, pasture, and equipment! I can say as a longhorn showman and cattle raiser, that where you keep your cattle is the utmost important part of the job. Having e cient barns to work and sort in, as well as doctor, wash, etc. is key for our show/ rodeo barn at home. But in addition to that, option to free pasture is major in terms of allowing them exercise and keeping the cattle fresh. If good grass is not available, then free choice hay should be provided. Lastly, tractors, hay feeders, and other equipment can help make feeding and distribution easier. I can say that at the pasture it is a lot easier to be in a tractor when 25 head of cattle are running after you ready for their fresh coastal hay dinner! I wish you all luck with the remainder of this fall show season, and I’ll see y’all at the next shows and events!
