Hear it? It’s what we long for but seldom slow down enough to hear... frogs, wind rustling through leaves and grass and the sound of cattle grazing and an occasional cough or a gentle mooing. The moments you can stop and soak in all the noise you miss because of the busy-ness of your days.
Raising Longhorns, competing in shows, futurities and measuring contests and particpating in affiliate functions and consigning to sales can seem ovewhelming at times with all that goes on in the Longhorn industry each year, but on the hot summer days in-between the busiest times, just stop and listen and enjoy the world your cattle live in, the sounds of nature and breathe deep and relax. Then get ready to jump in and participate again.
While you’re taking a break from the heat, take time to nominate deserving members for the TLBAA Special awards and the TLBaa Hall of Fame. You can find criteria and past winners in this issue. It’s a meaningful thing to even be nominated so if someone pops to mind, don’t assume someone else will naiminate them...click a button and do it.
Most importantly, take time to participatein the TLBAA Membership Survey. You can find the QR code in this issue to take they survey. It has lots of options for your to give feedback and suggestions so don’t miss the opportunity to contribute your input and be heard.
Then you can get geared up for fall shows and sales and futurities. The industry has grown to the point that there is really very few weeks of the year that there is not some sort or Longhorn activity going on. That’s a great thing for the breed!
There’s several ways to know what’s going on. There is an industry calendar in the back of every issue of Trails Magazine, an online event calendar at www.tlbaa.org and E-Trails has updates weekly for all TLBAA events. If you don’t see your event listed, just email me at myr@tlbaa.org. I only list events that request to be on our calendar, but ist is free and I am happy to list any Longhorn events that allow our members to participate or attend.
We have extra copies on hand of the July Membership Directory. If you’d like to purchase an extra copy for the barn or truck, just call the office and we’ll get you taken care of.
I hope August is kind to you and I look forward to the flurry of fall activities coming our way.
Blessings!

t’s HOT outside. It’s probably gonna get hotter. Luckily fall is right around the corner. Y’all don’t forget to get your tickets to the Mesquite Rodeo for August 9 Longhorn night. Gonna be a lot of fun. The TLBAA is the sponsor for the evening. You will see a link for a membership survey we are putting out. We want to know what you think! What are we doing right? What would you like to see done differently? Or is everything great and you just want to compliment the Board? Fill those surveys out by the end of August while the link is still there.
Get your Horn showcase and futurity entries in by the August 15 deadline! It will be here before you know it. We’re expecting a big turnout with the addition of the NLFR this year. Once we fill up, we will have to cut off entries. So don’t wait till the last minute! Y’all stay hydrated and try to keep cool!

When cattle breeders talk about foundation genetics, one name stands out among Texas Longhorn enthusiasts: Butler. The Butler family’s breeding program, which began in the early 20th century, remains a gold standard for purity, predictability, and desirable traits in today’s cattle industry. But what exactly does it mean when someone says they raise “Butler longhorns,” and why does it matter for other herds?
A Lineage Rooted in Preservation
The Butler family – specifically Milby Butler of League City, Texas – became known for their dedication to preserving longhorn cattle when the breed was nearly extinct. Milby meticulously selected his herd based on traditional horn shape, distinct coloration, and strong conformation, avoiding crossbreeding with European cattle to maintain genetic purity. This resulted in cattle that remained true to the breed’s SpanishMexican roots, with long sweeping horns, muscular frames, and adaptability to harsh conditions.
What Makes Butler Genetics Unique?
1. Consistent Horn Growth
Butler longhorns are renowned for their predictable lateral horn growth. Many lines produce sweeping horns with significant total length, making them highly desirable in the show ring and as breeding stock for horn genetics.
2. Color Patterns
The Butler line carries rich, diverse color genetics, producing striking animals in red roan, parker brown, and bold white-based patterns with dark accents. Breeders often integrate Butler influence to expand their herd’s color variability without sacrificing traditional type.
3. Calving Ease and Fertility Longhorns in general are known for calving ease,
but Butler cattle emphasize this trait further, with moderate birth weights and strong maternal instincts, supporting herd growth without the prolonged labor and higher risk calving common in heavier-muscled breeds.
4. Structural Soundness
Butler cattle exhibit strong toplines, clean underlines, and correct leg structure. This foundation ensures longevity and productivity – especially valuable for breeders aiming to maintain or restore structural soundness in other lines.
Benefits to Other Herds
Integrating Butler genetics into broader cattle operations – whether purebred Longhorn herds or commercial crossbred systems – offers key benefits:
Hybrid Vigor (Heterosis)
Butler longhorns’ genetic diversity enhances hybrid vigor when crossed with beef breeds, improving calf survivability, feed efficiency, and disease resistance.
Grass-Based Efficiency
Descended from cattle that thrived on sparse forage, Butler longhorns remain efficient grazers, requiring minimal supplemental feed compared to high-input continental breeds.
Their horn shape and striking patterns drive premium prices at longhorn auctions and shows, increasing profitability for breeders focused on both production and exhibition.
Using Butler genetics supports breed conservation efforts, maintaining a direct link to the original Spanish cattle that shaped Texas ranching history.
Today, Butler genetics are maintained by dedicated breeders who value purity alongside market needs. Many integrate Butler bloodlines with other foundational strains – such as Wichita Refuge, Marks, and Wright – to optimize horn growth, disposition, and body condition. However, preserving straight Butler lines remains crucial for maintaining the genetic reservoir that benefits the entire Texas Longhorn breed.
As the cattle industry evolves toward sustainability, adaptability, and consumer-driven marketing, Butler longhorns stand as a testament to how careful genetic stewardship can shape not just beautiful animals, but productive, resilient herds for generations to come.

For the first time in eight years, the Texas Longhorn World Expo found a new home — and what a welcome it received! The Taylor County Expo Center and the City of Abilene rolled out the red carpet for the 38th edition of this end-of-season celebration of Texas Longhorn excellence.
This year’s theme, fittingly chosen by the TLBT youth, was “Under the Big Top,” and the show certainly lived up to the name — full of excitement, color, and unforgettable moments. Moving to a new venue is no small feat, and while there were a few hiccups to iron out, exhibitors and staff tackled the challenges with patience, flexibility, and a positive spirit.
Wednesday kicked off with a flurry of activity as trailers rolled in, banners were hung, and barns began to buzz with life. Contestants in the photography competition displayed their entries, vendors found their places in the concourse, and exhibitors got settled in for a week of competition and camaraderie. The TLBT youth jumped straight into the action with livestock judging in the afternoon.
Thursday began with a stirring color guard presentation from Dyess Air Force Base, followed by a powerful rendition of the National Anthem performed on trumpet by JP Roesler. The day’s competition started with a group photo and show ring orientation, and then it was time to hit the ring for the Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals. Judge Chad Coburn and the volunteer team from Angelo State University kept the ring mov ing efficiently throughout a full day of competition. A highlight was the continuation of a new tradition — announcing showmanship winners
The total entries for the 2025 TLBAA World Expo represented a strong showing by TLBAA membership:
• 642 Total Entries
• 419 Head of Cattle
• 324 Youth Entries
• 165 Open Haltered Entries
• 35 Non-Haltered Entries
• 38 Trophy Steer Entries
• 80 Miniature Entries
in the ring, with the top five in each division receiving well-deserved recognition.
Friday brought a full slate of events, beginning with a warm and welcoming “Breakfast in the Barn” sponsored by the Oklahoma Texas Longhorn Association, complete with donuts, juice, and coffee for everyone. TLBT youth then turned their focus to the Gold Merit competition, showcasing their skills in public speaking and project presentation. Meanwhile, in the ring, the Non-Haltered Division was judged by Ty Gillespie, followed by the ever-popular Trophy Steer Division. The junior steer classes were deep and competitive, and Judge Gillespie had his hands full selecting the Grand Champion Trophy Steer — a process that continues to honor the division’s tradition of using approved TL

people and their accomplishments elsewhere in this issue.)
The TLBT wrapped up the day by holding their annual meeting, where they elected new officers for the coming show year and welcomed newly appointed Advisory Committee members.
Saturday was all about showcasing excellence in the Open Haltered Show, where both Standard and Miniature Longhorns took to the ring. From young heifers to seasoned herd sires, Judge Wade Kirkland had the challenging task of evaluating an impressive lineup of cattle. Though the day was long, spirits remained high as everyone looked forward to the evening festivities.
The weekend concluded with a vibrant banquet, featuring a delicious dinner from Joe Allen’s Barbecue, a lively silent and live auction, and the presentation of numerous awards and recognitions. The “Under the Big Top” theme added a festive flair, and by the end of the night, both youth and adults hit the dance floor to celebrate another successful year, with the DJ spinning tunes late into the evening.
The 2025 World Expo in Abilene was a show to remember — full of new beginnings, cherished traditions, and plenty of Longhorn pride. We’re already looking forward to 2026 and all the excitement the next

The 2025 TLBT Senior Sale continued with its exceptional payouts to the TLBAA youth! A total of fourteen youth brought their heifers before auctioneer Joshua Rush and members who watched via Hired Hand Live. The total for the fourteen lots with add-ons was in excess of $158,000! Thank you to all the buyers and those that participated with add-ons. The Senior Sale is a creative, unique way for graduating TLBT seniors to fundraise for their future endeavors. No commission or consignment fees, 100% raised goes directly to the kids!
The high selling lot this was from Ava Miller, whose animal brought over $31,000 when the final bid with addon’s came in. This topped last year’s sale topper which was believed to be the highest selling Senior lot in recent memory. Contributors could pay directly to the Texas Longhorn Breeders Foundation, making their donations come with a tax benefit. Interested bidders could also view via Hired Hand Live and place their bids through their service.
We look forward to the 2026 Senior Sale and thankful for all who helped make it possible. The North Texas Longhorn Breeders Association was the sponsor of this year’s Senior Sale with Ben Herman’s Horned Ranch providing the funding for Hired Hand Live’s participation. Pictured on this page are the youth and their animals with their buyers, if those photos were taken, or shots from the auction. Be sure to thank them, if you see them.

Hello everyone!!
I had an amazing time “Under the Big Top” at the Texas Longhorn Junior Nationals/ TLBAA World Show this year! This organization has expanded to be an amazing community of people, and I could not be prouder to be a part of it. The friendship, energy, and passion expressed amongst our youth is truly something special. Congratulations and good luck to all of our seniors that graduated this season! You have been a vital part of our industry for many years. We will miss you all. To my 2024-2025 TLBT Youth Board, thank you for your service to our industry and all of the fun. It was truly an honor to work with y’all! I would like to thank the TLBT National Youth members for supporting me and allowing me to be your second-year 2025-2026 President! I am super excited to lead this membership once again with everything and more that I have to offer. Being on this board for numerous years has helped me become a leader and a better version of myself. Being your president this past year has brought me so many friends and memories I will cherish forever. But I can’t wait to make this next year one to remember! We already have some great opportunities in store. To my new Youth Board, I am honored to share with all of you an opportunity to grow and better our organization! I know that this year will bring us closer together, as well as encourage us to try new things that will make us even stronger! Once again, thank you for believing in my leadership.
Let’s get to work y’all!

Hadley Anderson
Vice President
Hey Y’all, I am Hadley Anderson, your two time TLBT Vice President. This upcoming show season will be my fourth and final year showing. After this year I will have served on the TLBT board for three years as a senior director and vice president. While I am from Shreveport, Louisiana my heart lies with the people and animals of this great organization. I have fallen in love with this iconic American cattle breed and even more so the individuals involved with it. The lessons learned and relationships built are things that will follow me throughout my life and in this industry. These opportunities have allowed me to express myself and give back to a community that has done so much for me. I can’t wait to see what more we can accomplish with this new set of leaders.
Annabel Villarreal
I’m Annabel Villarreal, and I will be a senior going into the 2025-2026 show season. I’m excited to represent The TLBT this year as Secretary. A little about me that most know is that I played softball from eight years old up till recently hanging up my cleats in the fall of 2025. I’m a child of God, love to travel, and dedicate my time to working with my Longhorns. I’m looking forward to representing the TLBT and getting to meet new people.
Secretary Anthony Quinn
Treasurer

Ava Miller
2025 TLBT Senior
How was your senior year?
- It’s been great. It’s definitely been super busy and just jam-packed, trying to take in a lot of shows and everything to, you know, make the most of my senior year and promote Sally, and I’ve had a great time with her and just doing everything and meeting a bunch of new people preparing to go off to college.
How are you feeling about your last time being in the junior division?
- It’s definitely a Bittersweet moment. I haven’t been in it as long as a lot of people have, which is definitely a regret of mine, but I got in it as soon as I could as soon as I really knew about it. I’m gonna miss being involved with the more youth-based stuff, and I’m also super excited to kind of take a step up and be able to become more involved with other things as well.
How did the sale go for you?
- It went better than I ever would have expected it to. I knew that I had interest in Sally. I’ve been doing everything I can this past year to promote her and talk to breeders and buyers, and all the people that I thought would like her type in kind of cattle going into it. I expected her to be pretty successful, but never would have imagined that we would have broken a record.
Do you have any advice for the youth of the TLBT?
- Definitely be involved in everything you can, everything agriculture, agriculture is an industry that’s never going to die out and never can, Become involved in the TLBT as much as you can. I never was on the board or anything only because I only became involved last year and didn’t really know as much about it. I was very involved in my FFA, which I feel like I gained a lot of the same experience from, so I would say do the gold Merit, do the livestock judging become a part of the board that’ll help you grow so many life skills that you never would have if you weren’t involved in these kind of things.
Ben Herman TLBAA Member
How do you feel the Senior sale went?
- Good I did bid on Ava’s senior sale for a friend of mine, and he wanted that genetic line it’s very sought after through Longhorn cattle.
What is your deciding factor as to what heifers to bid on?
- I did a lot of add-ons to The Oak Ridge kids and some other kids that I knew. And then the ones that we bought were based on the friend of mine that wanted those kinds of genetics.
Nick Mathey TLBAA Member
How long have you been in the Longhorn industry?
- Well, our first show was the Louisiana State Fair in 2019. I guess that would make it here going on six years.
What made you want to run for TLBT Advisor?
-I just felt like it was the way. Maybe I could give some time and some energy back to, the breed and the association. It’s been so cool for my kids. I’ve watched these positive things for all five of my kids. How don’t I want to be a part of that, you know, and maybe help out others. I mean, logistics, planning and delegating, like, that’s kind of my jam.
What are you looking forward to most this year?
- I look forward to just watching people make cool decisions.I imagine there’s gonna be some initiatives ahead of us that we want to tackle and just setting up some framework and watching people make great decisions and then watching awesome results. It’s cool when you set up a plan and then you execute the plan, and see the results here. Just like showing an animal in the ring, you put all that time in at home and execute and boom.
Melissa Dittmar TLBAA Member
How long have you been in the Longhorn industry?
-Have been industry since my daughter was six and a half, and she’s now 11.
How has your showing experience changed?
- We did not own a truck or trailer, and so we had people call us and help us. As we progressed showing, we became more independent. We have a truck and trailer, and now we haul ourselves. We had a lot of amazing people along the way that taught us what to do so we could one day be able to be our own thing.
What has been your favorite show experience?
- Watching my kids learn through life lessons and learning what’s important and seeing the friendships they built.
What made you want to be a TLBT advisor?
- I think we have a great group of kids here, I think it’s super important for us to guide them and mentor them along the way. That way, one day when they get into the world, they’ll know how life works, and that they feel supported and loved. Because this is a community, and it takes a family to raise a Community. Mostly this show season, not just by showing, but also being an advisor I’m just looking forward to learning more about the organization and just watching my son he got elected as a junior director.
Do you have any advice for the parents or TLBT members?
- I think our kids learn more in the barns than many other places, and they learn how to work through problems, that it is good for kids to struggle and to not have everything handed to them. That way they can be functional adults and understand how to go through life. I think it’s super important. I think the barns are one of the best places to learn.
Stephen Head TLBAA Member
What made you want to pursue the longhorn industry?
-My Wife asked for a picture of Bevo, the University of Texas mascot, to hang on the wall next to her diploma. I didn’t buy a picture, I went and bought her a Texas Longhorn.
How has this year been for your Longhorns?
- Not a real good year. We used to win, but we haven’t won anything this year. Our cattle aren’t looking as good. I don’t know if we just had the wrong bull for a while or if our pasture is not in good enough shape to provide the nutrition. We’re not winning the way we would like to win.
How do you plan to overcome this?
- I don’t know how we will but we just went and bought a new bull from Oliver Longhorns. We just bought a new cow and heifer in the senior sale. With good genetics. We changed feed Brands, seeing if maybe that’s part of the issue. So, we’re trying some things.
Do you have any advice for the youth or members of the TLBAA?
- Figure out what you like. That judge only sees our animals for 10 minutes out of the whole year. We look at our animals every day. He didn’t spend anything on our animal. We spend the money on the animals, so we need to spend the money on animals we like. The money to buy them, but the money to feed them the time it takes to raise them. It needs to be animals we like, regardless of what the judge picks. So, don’t go chasing after. A ribbon or a belt buckle because of Judges. Go pick what you
Luke Warminski 2025 TLBT Senior
How has your view of the Longhorn industry shifted over the years?
- It definitely was when I first started as a little kid, and these are massive monsters, then, as you grow up, they get smaller, but they also get bigger with you. So now, I’m at the age where I’ve mastered the art of dodging horns. It’s a lot a lot more fun than when I first started. It’s less of a hassle. I can finally kind of manhandle the actual cows. It’s gotten a lot more fun the more I’ve aged, and I’m looking back, and it’s. It was all worth it.
How has this year been for you?
- It has been great! I’ve branched off into European cross fluffy cows that was fun for the first half of the year, and now I’m back to Longhorns with my senior sales. I really wrapped up very nicely, I think.
How do you feel your senior sale went?
-First, I decided if I wanted to go for pure quality heifer or somewhere of a story, and I decided to go with my story with my first tappers, just like lineage essentially, and I think it paid off in the end. I’m really impressed at how well she did, and I’m excited to see where she is in the future. How my legacy essentially continues to affect the breed.
Why did you decide to split your money evenly among the seniors?
- Besides the fact I’ve always had a little bit of an edge over everyone else. My dad, being a doctor,he went out and bought all this land because he grew up a farmer. He missed farming and everything, and he wanted me to have that. So, instead of just paying for my college, he went and bought all the cow equipment, and we didn’t start out with the best cows, of course.
Do you have any advice for the TLBT members?
- Don’t shrug off your responsibilities if you run for office. Commit to that. Make sure you don’t just pawn it off to the executive board.
The TLBAA Horn Showcase returns to the Canadian County Expo Center located just west of Oklahoma City this year on October 2nd – 4th! All the measuring, Futurity, Bull Alley, sales, seminars and banquet take place in the Expo Center. We are also excited to offer a concert with Neal McCoy immediately following Bull Alley, the evening of Friday, October 3rd.
This is an event not to be missed!
Measuring Contest:
Horn Showcase is the first and only event offering official horn measurement records for Texas Longhorn cattle. Tip-toTip, Total Horn, Composite and Twisty measurements will be taken based on the choice of the entrants. If you are unable to attend, be sure and check out the satellite locations for the weekend before, September 27th & 28th, as there should be one close enough for you to enter and attend. Satellite entries vie for the same measurement awards as being in Oklahoma.
Select Sale:
This year we are continuing with a Select Sale with limited consignments to showcase the best our breeders have to offer. These buying opportunities will be available on Friday, October 3 with some of the finest Texas Longhorn cows you can find offered.
For the sale, either bring your trailer or fire up the computer to bid on-line via Hired Hand Live. There are offerings to fit any program. Look for the catalogs on-line in advance of the event and as part of your September Trails issue.
Bull Alley:
Come take a seat and hold on to your hat as we dim the lights, start the music and bring in each bull to stand in the spotlight as you hear more about his genetics and production record and dream of adding some new genetics to your herd but….WAIT!
All you have to do to take that genetics home with you is bring a semen tank or order semen for delivery at the event. This is window shopping at its best! An awesome opportunity to see industry leading bulls in person and purchase semen at special event pricing. If you can’t be live at the event, you can still purchase semen online and have it shipped. Look for a sneak peak at those bulls in the September issue foldout. After Bull Alley, the fun continues with acclaimed Texas country music artist Neal McCoy! The concert is brought to you by Lucky Mountain Ranch/Mike Davis.
Futurity:
Cattle are judged individually in class divisions by a set of five judges against breed standards. It is a look at the complete animal – conformation, color and horn. Scores are ranked in each class to determine a winner. Additionally, this is an opportunity to earn a bit of prize money! A Futurity win is a cattleman’s validation that their breeding program is producing what the industry desires. Even spectators take away a lot of insight as to what needs adjusting in their herd to produce marketable Longhorns.
They are fun to enter and educational to watch – Come check it out!
Superior Awards:
Those animals winning both their Futurity and Measuring classes will take home a coveted award recognizing those who excel overall.
Awards Luncheon:
We will have all show awards presented on Saturday afternoon, after the Futurity concludes that day. This is the opportunity to hear the winners’ announced, get those award photos, eat a tasty meal and enjoy the camaraderie with fellow Longhorn enthusiasts. Those that want to hit the road early on Saturday, should have plenty of time after receiving their awards.

All Cattle Must Be Removed By 12:00 p.m.
• A Horn Showcase female entry must have had at least one recorded TLBAA calf, be nursing a calf at side or be confirmed bred by 36 months of age by palpation, ultrasound or BioPRYN blood test conducted 60-days past breeding and be so noted on a health certificate signed by a veterinarian and furnished to the show office.
An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count. It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.
As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.
• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.
• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.
• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.
• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.
• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .
• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.
• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.
The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.
• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.
• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.
• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.
• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.
• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.
• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.
• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.
• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.
This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.
To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.
Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.
• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.
• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)
• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.
• No minimum straw purchases allowed.
• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.
• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.

The Elmer Parker Lifetime Award honors those members, who have been dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Longhorn breed, qualities that Parker was known for.
This award is named after Elmer Parker, who was a longtime employee and manager of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge Longhorn herd. Parker joined the sta at the Refuge in 1946, learning from the previous Longhorn managers: Earl Drummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968, he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at the Refuge and continued until his retirement in 1981. Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at the Refuge continued for more than half a century.
The Parker Brown color designation on Longhorn registrations was named after Elmer Parker – the dark brown, almost black color, with lighter dorsal stripe, was one of his favorite colors.

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year Award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of Texas Longhorn cattle through their breeding program.
This award is named after native Texan, Dave Evans, who entered the Texas Longhorn industry in 1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife, Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additional ranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch.
Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and the Mountain & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms as TLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the Colorado National Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in 1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for many years.
From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls available in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed for consistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchased Texas Ranger Jr. in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In 1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the best he’d ever owned.
Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. It is therefore a significant honor to be a recipient of this award, named in honor of this dedicated Longhorn breeder.

The purpose of the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is to preserve the great history of the Texas Longhorn cattle breed and to recognize individuals who have had the greatest impact and influence on the breed. Induction into the Texas Longhorn Hall of Fame is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual, whose contributions and commitment have truly shaped the breed.
To be eligible for induction the nominee must have been an outstanding contributor over a period of 20+ years either as a breeder, competitor, or contributor to the Texas Longhorn breed and TLBAA.
The nominee should have been or is currently a member of the TLBAA. A nominee may be either living or deceased.
Any TLBAA member in good standing may submit a nomination.
It is the responsibility of the person preparing the nomination to include a complete historical biography which is sufficiently detailed to tell the nominees story, to demonstrate conclusively that the nominee is deserving of induction into the Hall of Fame.
The complete unedited nomination package will become a historical TLBAA document. Effort should be made to detail the nominee’s history, accomplishments, and successes. Tell their story and preserve the history of how this individual contributed to our association and breed. Provide adequate supporting documentation.
Nominations must include a completed copy of the TLBAA nomination form as well as supporting documentation to demonstrate the eligibility criteria detailed below:
a. Accomplishments in the Longhorn industry
b. National importance within the Longhorn industry
c. Contributions made to the Longhorn industry
d. Enduring value or historical significance of accomplishments
e. Personal qualities (integrity, character, uniqueness)
Supporting documentation may include photographs, newspaper or other publication clippings, multimedia items, URL addresses for online videos, competition records from the TLBAA’s HORNS system or other related organizations. Reference letters from those who know or knew the nominee, a personal testament from the individual preparing the nomination, or relevant passages from books containing biographical information on the nominee.
Nominations will be accepted year-round; however, a nomination must be received by a deadline of September 15 of each year for the committee to consider for the following years award.
Nomination forms and supporting materials must be submitted in hard copy, unbound and on traditional letter size paper (8.5”x 11”). Nominations which are received after the deadline will not be accepted. Nominations which fail to adequately demonstrate the eligibility of the nominee will not be accepted.
An individual’s nomination may be reviewed by the Hall of Fame Committee each year for a maximum of three years; however, the nomination must be resubmitted each year. Upon the completion of the third year, if a nominee has not been selected for induction, then the nominator must wait two complete calendar years before resubmitting their nominee to the Hall of Fame Committee.
The Hall of Fame Committee, by a majority vote will select the inductees and be confirmed by a majority vote of the TLBAA Board.
An induction ceremony will take place annually at the Hall of Fame banquet hosted by the TLBAA. Inductees will receive recognition and awards at the banquet. Inductee will also be showcased in the TLBAA Trails magazine.

What’s In Your (Longhorn) Wallet?
As we reach the mid-summer point in the year, our calves are growing and our cows are with bulls. The cycle continues and we, as producers, determine which animals to sell and look for new blood for our existing herds.
The question becomes, how and where do you sell your animals? In our region there just aren’t many options. Especially economically viable ones. Consignment fees start at $300.00 per animal. Then there is an additional 8% - 10% of the sale price for commission. At the end of the day $500.00 or more comes right off the top! Never mind your time, food, travel costs and more. As a producer, it makes me wonder why I even bothered to bring my animal to sell.
The GPTLA has decided to do something about that!
Consider this. A Longhorn Sale that puts YOU, the Breeder, FIRST. A sale without all the bells and whistles that reduce your bottom line. $100 consignment fee, and NO commission on the sale price. More money in your pocket.
Enter, the first ever Fall Round Up Longhorn Sale to be held in Rapid City, SD on 27 September 2025. The sale will be held with cattle on site in conjunction with our annual Horn Showcase Satellite Measuring event. It’s a revolutionary way to buy and sell longhorns. A sales event with the producer in mind.
If you are interested in consigning or just have questions, call Gordon Howie 605-381-3998 or Mark & Lisa Sanders 605255-4749 (the sale committee)
For more information on The Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association, check out our website at www.gptla.com
The GPTLA membership continues to welcome new member producers (you can join regardless of where you live). We would LOVE to have you join us! $350 lifetime membership dues or $35.00 annual. Gordon Howie, President | Shawn Tobin, Secretary | Lisa Sanders, Treasurer
We are always happy to help! Be sure to check out our web site at www.GPTLA.com

HOTLA held its annual general meeting June 29, 2025 at Meyer’s Elgin Smokehouse. During the gathering period, attendees played bingo moving around the room to find the right person to match the description in each square. Everyone should have gone away having met lots of new friends.
Members and prospective members alike enjoyed a great barbecue meal, a short talk on J.Frank Dobie and his role in the preservation of longhorns, a Hooves and Horns presentation by Dr Kevin Washburn of Texas A & M with an update on the New World Screw Worm. In addition a total of four veterinarians were in attendance with all having info and input to share.
It was good to see so many youth members reporting on the recent World Show side by side with youth that have not yet
Business portion included a report on finances from Treasurer Brad Burkhart including info from the last two shows hosted. Follow-ups were provided on progress made on open items from last year’s general meeting. Door prizes were won by Troy Unger, Sarah Hendricks, Madison Clark, Joey Melton, and Jerry Deal. The meeting was adjourned by President Danny

In the Texas Longhorn industry there are events that look at two out of three aspects of the breed, conformation and horn, but never has there been an event that features the uniqueness of colors so evident in the breed. This year the A liate Relations Committee will once again be o ering TLBAA members the “Rodger Damrow Colorful Calf Contest” respectfully titled after longtime Nebraska Texas Longhorn Association President, Rodger Damrow, who was very fond of colorful calves.
Here’s how the contest will work:
• A colorful photo of an active TLBAA member’s most colorful calf born in 2025, will be submitted to the TLBAA o ce. The picture must be high quality. Preferred format is digital file from a camera, saved and sent at maximum file size. If using a cell phone, please do not use zoom. Get close to the calf. If sending a print to be scanned it must be at least 8 x 10 inches and printed out as a photo (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, O ce Stores).
• A $20 entry fee made payable to the TLBAA is to be included with the photo.
• Members can enter more than one animal, but each entry must have a TLBAA registration number or, if too young to be branded, the TLBAA registration numbers of both sire and dam.
• Contest will be open until December 31st, 2025.
• Winners will be decided by an independent judge not involved in the contest.
• Winners will be announced during the Longhorn weekend in January.
• The winning entry will be featured on the front cover of March Trails Magazine. (If possible, think vertical when snapping the photo) The additional finalists, as well as all other entries, will be featured elsewhere in the magazine. For Questions contact: Deb Lesyk (halters.buckets@yahoo.com), or Myra Basham (myra@tlbaa.org).
Entries Must Be E-Mailed or Mail (postmarked) to the TLBAA O ce by Dec. 31
We’re excited to welcome the newest TLBAA Dam of Distinction to the Roll of Honor. JTS Cowboy Princess is owned by Tavis Martin of Martin’s Lookout Ranch in La Follette, TN
The Dam of Merit Program has been available for TLBAA members for many years as a tool to recognize those Texas Longhorn females that stand out in the area of production among Texas Longhorn breeders. Often overlooked as an effective marketing tool, this list is an official record of the positive reproductive record of Longhorn females.
How can it benefit in your program? It shows your dedication to building a herd on a foundation of solid, reproducible genetics. No one can afford females that do not produce offspring regularly and this record shows off those dependable genetics in your herd.
The list also promotes the cost effectiveness of the Texas Longhorn breed. Dependably producing a calf every year is a trait every breed hopes for in a female. Such evidence of productivity can sway other cattle owners to consider bringing Longhorns into a crossbred program or starting a secondary herd of Longhorns. You may even turn them into 100% Longhorn owners!
What’s the cost to you to get your female on the list? Only $25 plus a little time investment. You will need to make sure that as your females calve, you have updated their progeny records in H.O.R.N.S.
If you have a female that qualifies, simply call the TLBAA office and speak to registrar Rick Fritsche, or drop him an email at rick@tlbaa.org and he will provide you with the necessary form to fill out to submit your dam for verification. Rick will also help with any questions you may have about “calf at side” information in H.O.R.N.S.
Once the progeny have been verified, your dam will be added to the list which appears in Trails Magazine, posts under “Awards” on www.tlbaa.org, and you will receive a Dam of Merit certificate for your records.
This is an affordable and easy benefit for members to promote a very important positive trait of Texas Longhorns that make owning them that much more satisfying.
**NOTE: This is not a record TLBAA tracks for you. It is up to you, as a owner/breeder, to notify us when your cow has achieved this goal. We look forward to your participation.
