I have talked to a lot of Texas Longhorn Breeders who sell beef products. They all have stories of varied approaches and results. But there is one common factor they all mention: you have to put in the work.
What is the work? There are things to consider when selling beef. Things that no one can tell you in a one size fits all how to guide. The details regarding selling beef any way other than as a live animal can vary not only from state to state but even county by county. There are additional variances in requirements outlets such as farmer’s markets, food co-ops and retail outlets may have to sale your product through them. If you truly want to be successful selling, then look into the avenues and location where you will sell your beef and find out about any permits, fees, and rules that govern that activity. Do your research.
That research continues as you try different approaches, different cuts of meat, and maybe even different processors to arrive at a product that your market wants. It’s an ongoing process of learning that all people who successfully sell any product or service goes through... constantly refining your method and product to improve sales.
Part of that process should probably include sending samples of your own beef to an independent lab for nutritional analyses. Several successful beef producers do that simply because they want their customer to have confidence that what their being sold matches the nutritional information they’re given. Stay tuned for more information on testing your own beef in an upcoming issue of Trails
Am I skirting the issue of the Association doing another beef study? No. The fact is the original study looked at Longhorns that were fed and cared for in the same environment as the commercial cattle they were compared to. A controlled study. A lot of good information came from that original study, indicating that when fed the same as a commercial cow, the Longhorn performed differently as to how fat was stored and distributed in the animal. It also indicated that some beneficial nutrients were found at a higher density in the Longhorn when processed.
There are so many variables in the diet and genetics from Longhorn to Longhorn, region to region and ranch to ranch that if you want transparency in a consumer world that now often holds ones feet to the fire over the quality of their food products and the nutrition claims, that having your own beef tested is just good business.
You don’t want the hassle of selling beef? Take a look at the producers listed on pg. 23. They often need to buy animals to fill orders when demand outpaces the beef animals available.
Keep working and researching whether it’s herd management, beef production or genetics...there is always something to get better at.
Blessings!

uturity season is officially underway with the Winchester Futurity now behind us. The Texas Longhorn Breeders Gulf Coast Affiliate put on a great event and the breeders came out in full force. April and May are exciting months for Longhorn breeders, with futurities and sales almost every weekend. It’s a good time to fill up those greening pastures with new additions or hit the futurity trail! Turn to the last page of every issue of Trails to see upcoming events.
I’ve made it a point to reach out to new members and breeders so I can put a face to the names as we go to these events. I urge everyone else to do the same or at least introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. We all remember how awkward it was when we first got in the Association and didn’t know anyone!
It was Ron and Lisa Bailey that welcomed us at one of our first events. They’ve become wonderful friends throughout the years and we are even bull partners now on HL Double Barrel. As small of a thing as it was to them, it made a huge impact on us and our program having someone just reach out and be friendly at an event with so many unfamiliar faces for us. So reach your hand out when you see that new person walking by or looking lost standing in the corner, you just might make a lifelong friend!

Selling Longhorn beef to make money from animals that aren’t going to be desired for breeding stock sounds pretty straightforward. There are, however, things you need to be aware of before you head to a processor with your first animal.
• Search “usda mpi directory” on the internet or in the app store. It allows one to search for facilities offering USDA inspection. You may also search your state name along with “meat processors” to find ones that are state inspected or custom/niche.
• Ask other Longhorn breeders in your region who process beef, what processors they’ve used and how well it worked for them.
• Local butcher or specialty meat shops, as well as county agents or livestock markets may be sources of processor names.
Will you accept Longhorns?
I will be selling my beef, do you offer state or USDA inspection? What are my packaging options?
How long do you allow the beef to age?
Can I have the skull and/or hide?
What is the process when I bring the animal to you?
How does your processing schedule work?
What are your fees?
Do you have a cut sheet with available options?
What is the maximum length of horns you will accommodate?
If I have a larger horned animal than you can handle, can it be dispatched in the trailer?
If there is one aspect of processing beef that the processor wishes people understood it is the dressing percentage. People tend to be shocked when a 1,100 lb animal only yields 350 lbs of meat.
The dressing percentage is calculated as: Hot Carcass Weight (HCW) ÷ the Live Animal Weight × 100 HCW can vary greatly from one animal to another, for instance leaner animals can have lower dressing percentages because there is not as much fat weight on the carcass. If processing an older Longhorn, the horns can add considerable weight. It is that weight difference between live weight, which can include variables such as mud, manure and gut contents, and the weight after hide, horns and organs are removed that cause dressing percentage to vary so greatly at times.
LIVE WEIGHT
Actual weight of animal before or immediately following slaughter
HOT CARCASS
WEIGHT
Unchilled carcass in pounds after the head, hide and internal organs have been removed.
Final Packaged Product
Total pounds once processed, depending on what cuts are chosen, could be as low as 45 - 50% of live animal weight.
That HCW also includes bone, excess fat and moisture that will not be present in the packaged product. Hanging time and chilled air reduces moisture, different cuts requested and even butchering technique can cause a variance in how much weight is in the final packaged product.
It will take time to figure out what tends to be the average for your Longhorns. Many Longhorn beef programs have managed to get dressing percentages closer to the average of 60-64%
There is no worse feeling than bringing home your first processed Longhorn and realizing that there is no way it will fit in the freezer space you have available. If you sell your beef to others they, just as you, need to have an idea of how much space is required before committing to purchasing a large amount of meat.
So how much freezer space is enough? A quick search of the subject yields a confusing array of numbers that seem to vary significantly. Part of the reason for the variety of answers is the number of pounds in a quarter, half, side or whole beef can vary based on the type of cuts and the shapes of the packages.
If the whole animal is ground then more of it will fit in less space than one with part of the cuts as roasts or other irregularly shaped packages. Taking package shape into consideration, the average freezer on top of your refrigerator will hold 30-40 lbs. of meat (Roughly 1/8th of a beef). According to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, plan on one cubic foot of freezer space for each 35-40 pounds of cut and wrapped meat, more for irregularly shaped packages.
be hard to locate the cuts you want without a bit of digging. However, that effort may be worth it when you consider temperature changes can lead to freezer burn. When you open a chest freezer the cold air stays settled around the food. On an upright freezer temperature can fluctuate as you search for what you need.
Once you start storing quarters or more it is time to invest in extra freezer space. A quarter may fit into the freezer of a large side-by-side, but space for anything else would be limited. A small cube freezer would work better.
A half beef requires a larger freezer - closer to 7.5 cubic feet, while a whole beef may require 14 cubic feet or more. It is always better to over estimate space needed.
Length x Width x Height =Cubic Measure
One handy trick to help a larger freezer operate more efficiently when it isn’t full is to put jugs of water in it to freeze. Jugs can be added and removed as other items come and go. Having the freezer fuller also helps when there are brief interruptions of power, and, if you hap- pen to not have water available, simply grab a jug and let it thaw.
When you start to look at storage for larger amounts, take into consideration that cold air sinks. That is why chest freezers are so popular, despite the fact that you have to layer product inside and without a chart it could
There is no denying the power of the Farmer’s Market to expose your beef products to the public in a way that few other opportunities do. If it is a venue that allows you to cook on site and provide samples, or at the very least bring cooked product with you to share samples, the power of that exposure is exponential.
A few questions to ask before committing to any public vendor opportunities, whether a festival, fair or farmer’s market:
• What permits are required to sell at this venue?
• Is electricity available?
• Am I allowed to cook product on site?
• Am I allowed to offer pre-cooked samples of my products?
• If not provided, may I bring some sort of canopy if outside?
• Do I need to supply my own tables and chairs, and if you provide them, what is the charge?
• Are there restrictions on types of signage/displays used (e.g. feather flags, teardrop flags, banners, video monitors)?
It would be wise to talk to a Longhorn breeder that has processed and stored meat for some advice on freezer space required before taking the plunge into storing quantities of frozen beef, either for personal use or for sale.
The main thing to remember with any vendor opportunity is - never assume you can do anything you want to do - ask first or see if there are written contracts or rules available so you know your limitations. Farmers markets are far from the only effective tools for selling locally raised, healthy beef. Some of the options include:
• Website: Keep it clean with nice photos of grazing Longhorns, current pricing and product information and actual photos of your packaged and cooked product. Some information about the breed and how you raise and feed them help instill confidence in non-livestock people looking for healthy meat from happy animals.
• Social Media: Great place to engage people via photos and slices of life from your pastures. Video clips of cooking and recipes with photos are great attention getters as well. If you choose to use social media for reach, be sure to check it daily so you can address comments that may be left under posts.

• Local/Regional Food Co-Ops: There are many online resources for co-op distribution of locally grown products as well as online store fronts that allow orders to be taken and fulfilled by either you as the seller or via a centralized marketplace where people come to one location to pick up what they buy from multiple sellers. To see what options are available in your area, search terms such as “Farm to Table”, “Farmer’s Co-op” or “Sell My Beef Online”.
Who are your customers? While you can’t tell by looking at them, here are the groups likely to try your Longhorn beef:
1. People looking for healthy sources of lean protein
2. Those looking for locally raised beef
3. Those intrigued to try something new and different.
4. Those wanting 100% grass fed beef, if you offer that product
No matter whether the area you wish to market your product in is rural, suburban or urban, there are always opportunities to engage the people in that market via public platforms.
Schools often have FFA or 4H programs always looking to expose youth to something new. Bonus if you can expose them to the live animal as well as how to cook with it and the benefits of a lean beef product.
Along the same lines, civic organizations for adults such as Rotary clubs or Extension groups are always interested in presenting something new to members. You could do a cooking demonstration with samples, a history presentation on the breed emphasizing that as a beef product following the Civil War they were invaluable, or you could do a pasture to plate talk on how your cattle are raised and in turn, how that puts a healthier product on the plate. The possibilities are endless.
Donate your beef to a Church function, charity event or fundraiser and make sure your contact information and cooking tips for the lean beef are with the product.
So how do you draw these folks in?
No matter where you are exposing people to your beef product - online, in-person or via print - Use images and wording that hits their individual “need” for the product.
Photos of very clean, healthy animals grazing in green pastures with no mud or junk in the pictures. Photos that include people hand-feeding or petting a Longhorn. You want people to know they are well cared for and they are stress-free.
On signage or handouts, use images of active, healthy people engaged in activities such as running, walking, in the gym or playing sports.
Always include some nutritional information. If you really want to impress people, have some of your own product tested by an independent lab and post the results. That way they can be assured that they are truly getting the nutrition they are seeking.
While some producers find their market and struggle to keep their beef demand supplied with product, still others say they just can’t seem to find customers. Do you like your own product? Have you learned to cook dishes that you as well as others enjoy? Start there. Get to know the product, the health benefits and the cooking tricks so you can convey these things easily in conversation with others. Healthy is nice, but “tastes great” or “I won’t eat any other beef” imparts an enthusiasm for a product they don’t want to miss out on. If you are an introvert, you may have to attack it
Always remember that meat given away is not a loss, but rather an investment in getting people to fall in love with the product and want more if it.
Put the word out on your website and social media, or at a speaking engagement, that you welcome pasture tours. You could even offer paid outing to your farm or ranch where the guests are served a meal (including Longhorn beef or course) and are allowed to experience the peace and serenity of the “home” the beef comes from and the chance to sample the meat cooked by someone who knows the product and presents it well.
Any effort you make to be a part of activities in your community will spread the word about your being the “Longhorn person” quickly and can do the same for your Longhorn beef products you offer as well. Anywhere you go, keep some business cards (at a minimum) and brochures, handouts or flyers handy for those who want more information or want a tangible reminder for later.
purely from the online side. Practice getting interesting video and photo content and engage via social media. or, approach a local restaurant or catering company, or a food truck for that matter and offer them a few pounds of your ground beef for a trial run of a “Longhorn burger” to see if it’s a hit. Even if they don’t continuously sell it, people will have a chance to taste it.
Thinking outside the box and trying new things are essential when you feel like you’re just not moving product. The additional income is well worth the work you have to put into a beef sales program.
We’re excited to bring more awareness to Miniature Longhorns and continue to grow the breed. If you have a question, send it to us in an email and we’ll try to answer it next month!

How are mini’s measured?
All Miniature Texas Longhorns should be measured at the top of the hook bone to the ground while the animal is on a flat level surface, with the animal in a normal stopped position (front legs set square and the back legs square or in set in a slight
offset position) and the head held normally. To make a hip height measurement, an object with a flat edge should be set level on the animal’s hook bone. From your flat edge to the ground is then measured with a common tape measure, and that is how your measurement is read.

Newborn calves gain temporary (passive) immunity against disease when they ingest colostrum from the dam—since this “first milk” contains maternal antibodies. After a few weeks or months this temporary protection begins to wane, however, and calves must build their own immunities. Vaccinating calves at the proper time can help protect them until weaning age. Vaccinating them too soon, however, may not stimulate much immune response. If the calf still has maternal antibodies in his system, these tend to interfere with building his own immunities.
The big question is when to vaccinate, and with what, for optimum immune response in the calf. Dr. Steve Hendrick, Coaldale Veterinary Clinic, Coaldale, Alberta, says ranchers should always discuss a herd health program with their own veterinarian, but there are some general guidelines that may be helpful.
in the past, it’s probably a good idea to add this vaccine to prevent problems in the future,” says Hendrick.
“Vaccination is a way to have controlled disease exposure. We don’t want our animals to have to go through natural disease conditions, so if we can give them a little exposure to a weaker strain, or a controlled exposure, they are better off than having to fight off a more severe natural infection,” he explains.
“It would be nice if all calves could also be boostered at weaning age, but even getting one dose into them can help. Most calves need a BVD vaccine, and it’s usually a 5-way modified live virus vaccine. This, along with a clostridial vaccine, is probably most important for calves,” he says.
There are additional vaccines that are important in some regions. “On ranches that have a lot of summer pneumonia, some veterinarians advocate use of a vaccine against Mannheimia (what we used to call Pasteurella haemolytica) or Histophilosis. I routinely recommend this for herds that have problems with these bacterial infections. If a herd has had a problem
If calves are vaccinated at branding age for some of the pathogens that cause pneumonia, the vaccination they receive at weaning time acts as a booster. For replacement heifers, or any calves you might be keeping over winter, it is important to vaccinate at weaning age, to gain the benefit from that protection,” he says.
The big debate is when to give the vaccinations. “Most of my clients are still vaccinating calves at about 1 to 2 months of age, when they are branded. Some herds experience disease in calves earlier than that and may need to work with their veterinarian to decide whether to vaccinate calves sooner, maybe using an intranasal product. Purebred herds that calve early and put pairs through a calving barn are more likely to use intranasal vaccines at birth,” he says.
“In some situations, where calves are born later in the season, out on grass—in May and June—ranchers
find it so hot and dry in July that we started vaccinating those calves at birth instead. The stress of trying to vaccinate in July was too much,” he says. There are challenges when gathering the cattle off grass and putting them through a dusty corral and stress of sorting and vaccinating, which might seem to defeat the process.
Some herds now give vaccinations at birth. “This isn’t ideal; it wouldn’t be my first choice. But faced with whether to vaccinate at birth or not giving any vaccines, we chose to vaccinate the calves at birth, and I can’t honestly say we’ve had worse results. We don’t know whether this means the calves didn’t have enough of a challenge these last few years, or that the vaccine is helping.”
He also talked to some of the drug company technical services veterinarians about using clostridial vaccines early. “Even though it says on the label to not give this before one month of age, we haven’t seen any problems with giving the vaccine to very young calves. We also haven’t lost calves to blackleg or some of the other common clostridial diseases, so I feel comfortable giving clostridial vaccination at birth, as well. These cow herds have been vaccinated and boostered on a regular basis, so their calves may also be getting good protection (at least temporarily) from colostrum,” says Hendrick.
The best age for giving BVD and IBR vaccines is still debatable. “From what I’ve seen in the literature, if you vaccinate calves that have high levels of maternal antibodies from colostrum, the thought has always been that those antibodies will mop up the antigen in the vaccine and the animal won’t develop a good response,” says Hendrick.
There are two types of immunity. “One is cell-mediated; there are some immune cells that are non-specific and just clean up whatever foreign material they see. This is the first part of the immune system that develops and is very important for most of the diseases a calf faces. We believe there is probably an increase in this type of immunity with early vaccination, even though we might not see much increase in titers or antibody response. That’s more secondary. We feel that if these calves do get exposed to the disease, they at least have good cell-mediated
immunity from the early vaccination. We feel this is very important for some viral infections. If calves are being branded at a later age, I still recommend vaccinating at branding time,” he says.
It is important to work with your herd health veterinarian, and come up with a plan based on what has worked in the past for your herd, and what diseases you have. “We see some baby calf pneumonia that probably isn’t Pasteurella. It’s probably BRSV or some other virus, rather than bacterial. If you’ve worked with your veterinarian and made a diagnosis, you can be more specific about which vaccine you choose.”
An intranasal viral vaccine may work in some herds. It stimulates local immunity in the nasal passages, where the virus would normally enter. “You are stopping this entry, or minimizing the viruses’ ability to get into the body and set up infection. It’s almost one step earlier than giving vaccine under the skin, to be absorbed by the body. In that scenario the virus gets into the nose and goes on into the body before the generalized immune response can attack the virus,” he says.
“Some ranchers say the intranasal vaccine has worked very well for them, and others have used it and didn’t think it helped much. I think it depends on what the calves are exposed to. If the disease is bacterial rather than viral, the viral product won’t help,” says Hendrick. The intranasal vaccines won’t cover all the diseases that might be causing your problems. You have to know your enemy, to choose the right weapon.
This is why you need to work with your veterinarian and get some diagnostics on what is causing disease in
your herd. Then you are better able to select the appropriate vaccines, rather than just using what your neighbor uses, or what you read about for certain products.
“We are starting to learn more about the di erent pathogens that might be in the nose at di erent ages. There are probably more problems than we earlier realized, and unfortunately we can’t vaccinate for all of them, and what works one year may not necessarily work another year,” he says.
“In general, the core vaccines for any herd would be at least a BVD and clostridial vaccine for the calves,” he says. Some years are worse than others for calf diseases, depending on weather, stress and pathogen levels in the environment--which can change from year to year and you may have a disease that goes through the herd. Vaccination is one way to help minimize or control it.
“Vaccinating calves for scours is sometimes done, but in most cases I feel it makes more sense to vaccinate the cows to provide that protection via colostrum. There are situations, however, when people are calving in highly contaminated environments and feel they need to vaccinate those calves at birth,” says Hendrick. Vaccination may not work as well some years because the ability of calves to mount good immunity
depends on many factors. “If they are challenged with too much exposure to pathogens, or stressed by severe weather, or inadequate nutrition, they may still get sick,” he says. Herd health hinges on many things.
It is also important to handle vaccines properly so they can be e ective. They should be stored at proper temperature, and any modified-live vaccines should be used quickly after being opened and put into the diluting agent. Otherwise the vaccine may be worthless by the time you put it into the animal. “Cleanliness, proper vaccine technique and injection sites, needle size, etc. are all very important,” he says.
“I remember one wet year at one of the research farms at the university; it was a wet day when they wanted to brand the calves and they were wet. We ended up with a lot of abscesses from those injections,” says Hendrick.
This can be a challenge for ranchers who have to schedule a branding/working cattle at a specific time when the kids are home on the weekends to help, or the neighbors can get together to do it. It may not be the best day!

For those in the business of selling Longhorn beef, a pound of ground is an easy to offer giveaway. However, not ev eryone sells beef and not all customers come prepared to take a food product away with them.
A common misconception is that only businesses with a hefty marketing budget can afford to give away items such as pens, koozies, hats, or T-shirts. The range of possibilities is really endless when it comes to promotional items. Here are some popular options and a few you may not have considered:
than a week without tearing or colors fading. As with all products, you can spend more and get a better quality product. This may be important if you are using them as takeaways for people who actually purchase animals from you.
An ink pen is almost an expected item when you visit a business and for good reason. A cheap pen with just your name and phone number on it can cost you as little as 20 cents each by looking for a sale online. Yet who can’t use a pen? Admit it. You pick one up and keep it frequently. And, even if you’re not conscious of it, you see the name on it each time you use it.
If you can afford it, invest in a better pen, one that will also allow your logo or brand on it with your name and phone number or website. Spending a dollar or more a pen can get you an item that people actually value as their favorite pen and draws the attention of those they use it in front of. Imagine the conversation...”That’s a nice pen, where did you get it?” You respond, “I visited the folks with the Longhorns and they gave it to me.” Well, if that person had been curious about the Longhorns, the idea of a free pen and hot cup of coffee while visiting them may be the push they need to make the visit. You may be laughing now, but take a look at the stats presented throughout this article. Whether they admit it or not, gifts attract people. A pen may not be a huge draw, but the next products could be.
I will speak to this one personally. I have only bought one hat in my life, because it was a team hat and it was on sale ridiculously cheap. But, I own many hats and wear them frequently. They were free, and all have a business name on it ranging from the TLBAA to Western Horseman, and of course, a few Texas Longhorn ranches.
The approach to hats may not be giving them away to everyone who visits, but to everyone who purchases or shows a serious potential to purchase. It really depends on your ability to invest. A quick search online finds bargain hats with your logo on them ranging from roughly $3 - $5 each depending on quantity ordered. The biggest thing when looking at hats is to read the reviews of the product. Photos do not tell you what material is used or whether the hat will last more
Shirts are more difficult because of size differences. A quick look online found vendors who let you customize your order by selecting the number of each size you want. More economical shirts have a small imprint area on the pocket area (cost as low as $4-$5 each). The price goes up as you choose to imprint larger on the front or back of the shirt and as you add color to it. Price per shirt can jump to as much as $10 - $20 each based on style, quality and imprint area.
Shirts would be more appropriate on a daily basis for actual buying customers or those utilizing your herd or AI sire. However, they would also make good promotions to give away to promote your business on social media or to drive traffic to your website. You could offer to draw a name if they comment and share your post or draw a name from those who provide their e-mail via your website.
Tape Measures: Tape measures in a wide variety of styles and lengths up to 120” can have your brand or logo on them for as little as $1.10 each. Even if you’re not in the horn race, almost everyone uses a tape measure.
Calendars: Many banks and insurance companies give out small desk or car dash calendars. They can be had with your logo and contact info at the top for a little less than $1 each. Magnetic calendar for the refrigerator or side of a metal cabinet run $5-$6 and up for smaller quantities. Wall calendars can even be affordable if you opt for stock photos and just your business info imprinted on it, but if you want to have your own photos on it they can be as much as $8 - $10 each.
Drinkware: Plastic cups, coffee cups, thermal travel mugs, drink koozies....there is a wide variety ranging from $1 - $5 each. It is an item that tends to get wide exposure beyond the person you give it to. As with everything, read reviews and be conscious of quality if you are looking for an item to give to people who have invested in your cattle. Quality isn’t as much of an issue if you plan to give away in a public setting or to everyone who visits.
Visit a website such as National Pen or 4 Imprint and you will be overwhelmed with possibilities you never dreamed of, such as USB drives, power banks, sunglasses, ice scrapers, calculators, rulers, stationary products, flashlights... truly the possibilities are endless.

An award will be given to the host of the satellite who has the most animals measured at their location that are NOT owned by the satellite host. Animals that are owned in partnership by the host do not count. It will be decided by number of measurement entries, not by number of animals.
As an example, an animal entered and measured for composite will count three times.
• Get of Sire and Produce of Dam will each offer a Junior Division and a Senior Division.
• Each Division is based on the age of the offspring of the animal entered. The Junior Division consists of offspring between the ages of two and five years of age. The Senior Division consists of offspring six years and older.
• Sires must have three offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Dams must have two offspring in any (Jr. or Sr.) Division to compete in that Division. All offspring must be measured in TTT, TH & Composite.
• Both living and deceased bulls and cows can be entered since entries are based on measurements of offspring.
• Scoring for each animal will be computed by adding the values of TTT, TH and Composite of all three offspring for a bull or both offspring for a cow. The bull or cow with the highest value of the total added measurements amongst offspring will be the winner.
• Animals do not need to be present to compete in this class – can be measured at a satellite or in .
• Only breeding animals (Bulls or Cows) can compete as offspring.
• Offspring may be produced by natural breeding, artificial insemination or embryo transfer.
The TLBAA HSC Futurity is set up by age divisions to allow breeders the opportunity to exhibit the total package animals that represent their breeding operation.
• There is a 75% cash payout based on the class size. Payout will go to the top third of the class.
• Animals must be entered in at least one horn measurement contest.
• Animals will enter the ring based on age. Youngest to oldest. When the animal being exhibited walks into the ring, the 5 judge panel will be given the animals DOB.
• With the 5 judge panel, the high score and the low score will be thrown out and the remaining three judges will be added together for the final score. In the event of a tie there will be a tie breaker judge selected in advance. That judge’s score will be the tie breaker in the event of a tie.
• Animals must measure in at least one measurement class to participate in Futurity as well as be eligible for a Superior Award.
• One bull and one female will be chosen based on popular vote.
• Animals must be present in Oklahoma City to be eligible.
• Ballots will be available at the TLBAA desk during the event for voting.
This innovative award showcases our most elite animals that possess the total package we all strive for. To achieve the Superior Award, animals are required to compete in the horn measurement contest, as well as be judged on conformation in the Horn Showcase Futurity.
To be win the Superior Award, an animal must place first in both a measurement class and their Futurity class.
Winners will have a trophy mailed to them after the event.
• Bulls must be TLBAA A.I. certified and have an A.I. certified number to sell semen and participate in most straws sold.
• Bulls that are living must be present in Oklahoma City; deceased bulls may be entered for semen sales only. (Deceased bulls may have their offspring on site to represent them)
• Each owner should bring a semen tank with semen for sale or have semen sent to Champion Genetics. Must have 50 straws minimum available. If less than 50 straws available, seller must pay shipping to buyer.
• No minimum straw purchases allowed.
• Bulls must be entered in a measurement class.
• All semen sales are subject to a 7% commission.
December 12, 1937 — February 7, 2025
It is with great sadness for family and friends, but we are sure with glorious joy in the presence of his Savior for Bernard, that we announce the death of B. Bernard Lankford, Jr., on February 7, 2025, due to numerous health complications the past 2 1/2 years.
Bernard was born in Austin, Texas, to Lena Bollman Lankford and Buford Bernard Lankford, Sr., on December 12, 1937. He was the first born of their three children, and was the unique, fair-haired individual from that moment throughout his entire life. He was raised in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from North Dallas High in 1956. He was an outstanding athlete, on Varsity teams as a freshman, and held numerous basketball and baseball records and achievements. He served as a Marine Reserve, then graduated from the University of Texas in 1964 with a Petroleum Engineering degree. He became a Registered Professional Engineer and commemorated 50 Years of Membership in 2017.
After graduating with his degree, he “rough-necked” in the oilfields of Louisiana, both on-shore and off-shore rigs. His first Engineering job was with Penrod Drilling Company. He later held Engineering jobs with Tidewater/Getty Oil, Kern County Land Company, Signal Oil & Gas, and BTA. Being an entrepreneur at heart, he became an independent oil consultant in 1971, starting Lankford Engineering, BBL Drilling Company and Lankford Oil Company. He worked in Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
He was active in sports throughout his life. He owned one of the first fitness centers in Midland, Texas and was co-owner of the Professional AA baseball team, Midland Cubs, later becoming sole owner of the AA Midland Angels. He played “pickup noon basketball” with the famous and infamous, at the Midland YMCA several days a week and scheduled many racquetball games with much younger opponents who seldom beat him. He headed up/served on several YMCA fundraising campaigns. He met his wife, Bette, at the water fountain there, in between his basketball game and her aerobics class.
Also, while in Midland, Bernard was an active member of Midland Lutheran Church. He served as church President and led the building program for the new church sanctuary in 1986-1987. He was a member of Bridgebuilders and served on many church committees. He always loved attending Christmas Eve Midnight church service with his children.
In 1998 he retired from Oil and Gas Consulting and he and Bette moved to Weatherford, Texas where Bernard continued the ranching and farming, he had started in Kerrville and Midland, Texas. At their Moriah Farms, he raised Registered Texas Longhorns and supported Bette’s horses. He was a member of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association and served as Chairman in 2012-2013. He was a lifetime member of the TLBAA and the AQHA.
Before his health decline, he was an active member of First Methodist Church Weatherford, serving on numerous committees. He was especially humbled by his study and work as a Stephen Minister. He ministered to many individuals, both formally and informally. He hosted a weekly men’s “42” Domino Game in the Moriah Farms bunkhouse and thought of each of these men as very special friends in Christ.
Bernard had the best children in the world and in 2010, he added another daughter, Allison, (long and amazing story!). By example, he instilled in them love of family, a strong work ethic, pursuing dreams, and always being ready to play games of any kind! He gave them unconditional love and was a strong example of being a man of principle.
He made many friends through his work, through sports and through his church. He never met a stranger and was at ease with people from all walks of life. He was known for his whip-smart, one-of-a-kind humor, his intelligence, his core decency and his far-reaching impact on those he knew. To many who knew him he was “Larger than Life.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Chester and son, Richard; brother, Douglas Lankford; grandson, Bo Seibert and grandson, Samuel Meyer; and brother-in-law, Thurman Blackburn.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 34 years, who held his hand in life and death, Bette; his children, Penni Watters, BB Lankford III (Szilvia), Polly Meyer (Mike Autin), Layna Olszewski (Matt), and Allison Mobley; his beloved sister, Dinah Blackburn; 12 grandchildren: Austin Seibert (Shanna Lucas), Stephanie Williams (Brandon), Mackenzie Feaster (Justin), Bailey Hill (Shelton), Brett Lankford, Marta Lankford, Nicholas Wallace, Betsy Meyer, Sydney Walling (Rio), Garrett Kaiser (Victoria), Kelby Kaiser and Catherine Kaiser; nine great-grandchildren: Greer, Brynley, Adalyn, Hayes, Finley, Flora, Rio Jr., Roland, and Rosie; mother-inlaw, Frances Rathweg; sisters-in-law, Dr. Linda Couch (John Chesser), Shirley Stowe (Dr. Robert Stowe); and his very special nephews and nieces.
Memorial donations may be made to First Methodist Church Weatherford, 301 S. Main, Weatherford, Texas 76086.
His funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at the First Methodist Church Weatherford.

In 2019, after producing several World Qualifying Longhorn Shows (beginning in 2015), the Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association became an official affiliate of the TLBAA. The GPTLA officially covers South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana. The intent was clear: Promoting registered Texas Longhorns & helping producers market their cattle.
The mission of the organization is four-fold:
• Providing Youth Opportunities
• Promote the healthy and nutritional benefits of Texas Longhorn beef
• Help producers market their Texas Longhorns
• Promote the Texas Longhorn breed
Fast Forward ten years later… The GPTLA is growing and thriving. There are currently active members from many states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, Texas … and even Canada. WE WELCOME MEMBERS FROM EVERYWHERE to join us as we promote Texas Longhorn cattle! The Association hosts a yearly “Points Only” World Qualifying Longhorn Show in August that has grown exponentially. The focus is clearly on the youth at this event. Additionally, the GPTLA offers local Horn Measurement as a satellite site for the annual Horn Showcase.
Are you interested in becoming a member? When you join, you help us continue to promote the Texas Longhorn breed, provide youth opportunities, promote the healthy and nutritional benefits of Texas Longhorn beef, and help breeders market their Texas Longhorns. We would love to have you on the team!!
You do not need to be a member to donate and sponsor, although we would love to have you as a member. You can donate about anything...a heifer calf...a gift card...art... even cash! We have a silent auction at our annual show, and would love for you to be a part of that. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for our annual show and other events. Banner sponsorships, show sponsorships, youth showmanship awards. Please contact any of our board members to discuss your donations and/or sponsorships. We would love for you to be a part of our organization!
For more information on The Great Plains Texas Longhorn Association, check out our website at www.gptla.com

Happy Spring everyone! I am so glad that we are finally transitioning into my favorite season and getting into the swing of finalizing those points and animals lined up for Nationals in June this year! I cannot wait to see what the future brings for all our youth and cattle going forward. Good luck to each and every one of you as you continue the show season.
During our National FFA Week earlier this year, Feb. 15-22, 2025, I had the pleasure to interview our past TLBT Vice President and our current Texas FFA President, Hunter Lawson. I figured that this time would be perfect to visit with Hunter and talk with him about the impact that showing Texas Longhorn cattle leaves on youth.
- How has being involved with Texas Longhorns influenced your career beyond being a youth showman?
Being involved with the Texas Longhorn has influenced my future career in a major way. My future career plans are to go to Texas A&M next semester and major in Animal Science. From there I will go to medical school to become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. While this is vastly different and seems out of my realm, it was the Texas Longhorn breed, and Texas FFA made me realize this is the career path I want to take. This is because of the amazing people that I have met that in the Texas Longhorn breed that are involved in many career fields, but have our cattle breed to bring us together. I want to be able to be involved in another career field but still be an advocate for the agricultural industry.
- What does being the Texas State FFA President mean to you?
What it means to me to be the Texas FFA President isn’t something that I could sum up with words. I couldn’t take all of the words in a dictionary and string them together to even begin to explain what it means to me.
Being a Texas FFA State Officer means embracing the responsibility of serving as a leader, role model, and advocate for the over 180,000 FFA members across the state. It involves not only representing the FFA organization but also inspiring and empowering the next generation of agricultural leaders. As Texas FFA State President, I work to promote the values of leadership, community service, and personal growth. For myself, it’s about building connections with FFA members, advisors, and partners, and leading by example. It means upholding the traditions of the organization while driving positive change for the future.
-What advice can you give our present and future TLBT youth from your own TLBT experience?
Never. Say. No. Don’t ever say no to an opportunity. From my experience in the TLBT when you say no to an opportunity, all you are doing is limiting yourself. We must remember that any opportunity is growth. One of the opportunities I pursued while being an active TLBT member was running for the TLBT Youth Board. Pursuing this higher-level leadership was one of the opportunities that prepared me to be a Texas FFA State Officer. During my year as a TLBT Youth Officer, I helped develop and complete a community service project and continued my personal development through leadership pursuits. So, never say no to an opportunity for growth. The best growth happens outside of the ring. It doesn’t matter how many animals you bring in the ring, but rather the heart that you have in the ring.
Sincerely your TLBT National President
2024 - 2025 TLBT National President

-I have been an educator most of my adult life and love spending time with the youth. The TLBT has some of the best youth around and I wanted to be able to give back to them somehow.
-I love watching the youth collaborate together to make the TLBT even better. I also love seeing friendships form and the youth celebrating each other. This is an incredible group of young people who step up for each other and set good examples for those younger than them to follow in their footsteps.
What is your favorite memory as an advisor?
-So far, it has been watching the youth hit the fundraising hard this year and surpassing their goal. They rocked it!
What is your favorite piece of advice?
- Always work hard and do the right thing, even if no one is there to see you do it..
What is your goal as an advisor?
-My goal as an advisor is to support the TLBT youth in any way possible and to be a positive influence.

STEP 1
Unlike most other forms of showing livestock, showing Registered Texas Longhorns does not require a youth to own the animal that it shows. In order to prepare your child to walk into the show ring, first that child must be a junior member of the TLBAA.
Parents are not required to be members unless they choose to become Longhorn owners and be a part of the whole Longhorn experience.
STEP 2
Find a TLBAA Affiliate in your area. You can find a list of affiliates and their contacts on www.tlbaa.org. You may also look at the schedule of events page in the back of Trails Magazine or the calendar tab on the website to find a show near you to visit and meet Longhorn members.
STEP 3
Many breeders have animals that they would love to allow a youth to show. It may be possible for you to arrange to work with a breeder who shows and see if arrangements can be made for your child to learn from them and get their first show experience working with someone already familiar with the experience.
If you already own your own Longhorns, there are camps and workshops you can attend, or maybe some private one-onone with a Longhorn show person, to show you the ropes of halter breaking and working with your animal.
If you are fortunate enough to purchase a halter-broken animal, maybe even one that has already shown, then talk to someone to understand the process of entering and attending a show to be prepared to make your debut.
STEP 4
Take advantage of information in Trails Magazine, www. tlbaa.org, affiliate activities and showmanship camps to broaden your knowledge and gain experience. Try to enter as many shows as you can, even if you don’t think you are doing well. Nothing can be done well without learning and practice.
STEP 5
During all the steps above and beyond, have fun! Enjoy making new friends and watching your child build character, learn life lessons and develop skills that will help them throughout the rest of their life! Aim for the trophies but focus on the rewards of the journey.
