Back to School Savings

It’s about that time of year again and shopping for school supplies can get really expensive, really quickly. Luckily, Texas Bay is always looking out for you. Here are some tips to help you save money this Back-To-School season.

1. Mark your Calendar. August 1113th is Texas’ Tax-Free Weekend! Take advantage of the prime opportunity to go back-to-school shopping. Don’t go too crazy, though. Keep reading for our best tips to save.

2. Shop Solo. While it might be tempting to take your kids back to school shopping so they can look at all the pretty markers and folders, it is not the wisest idea. Similar to grocery shopping, kids can often influence the shopping list. This is often not in the best interest of your budget either! So, take some time for yourself and grab all the necessary school supplies without the guilt of saying “no.”

3. Invest in Quality. While things like pencils and notebooks may need to be bought annually, many school supplies do not have to be. Invest in a highquality backpack and lunchbox that will last for several years. While it may be more expensive initially, it will pay off in the long run. Not having to buy a new backpack every year is worth every penny.

4. Get Cash Back. With your Texas Bay Platinum Rewards Mastercard, you will get double the points when you shop from August 4th - 20th! Use this cashback reward to help you pay for future expenses that the school year is sure to throw at you. Texas Bay also offers personal loans that can help you with back-to-school expenses. Whatever it is this year, we’ve got your back.

5. Shop Simply. Utilize the generic brands. They are often of similar quality to their competitors and are a fraction of the cost! Saving a few cents and dollars here and there may not seem like a lot, but the savings add up with time! Be sure to shop smart this school year.

6. Price Match. Before you go shopping, it is wise to do some research and compare prices around several stores. Find out which stores price match and shop at those places. The big ones are Target, Staples, and Office Depot. On top of that, be sure to utilize Amazon as well. Scan the item in the app. If it’s cheaper, you can always order it then and there or bring the price up to the register.

7. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Shop around for used textbooks or even see if you can rent one and return it at the end of the school year. You can even find some textbooks as digital PDFs. You just have to look. Additionally, looking at and purchasing refurbished tech is never a bad idea. It is almost always cheaper for the same quality as it would be brand new. Don’t waste your money on some pretty packaging and a title.

8. Buy in Bulk. This is definitely the way to go if you have a big family. Buy supplies such as folders, pencils, notebooks, and pens in bulk as it is a much cheaper cost per item. Even if you don’t have a big family, utilize wholesale stores. Consider going back-

to-school shopping with another family and splitting the cost of supplies, saving you money in the long run.

9. Have a Finance Lesson. If your kid wants the fanciest locker decor or the prettiest but unnecessary gel pens, it might be time for a small lesson on the value of money. Tell your child they can get the pretty, shiny item, but they will have to pay for it with their own money. Often, we bet their attitude will change fairly quickly when it is their own money involved!

10. One Dollar Holla! Shop for the remainder of your school supplies at the dollar store. Items like scientific calculators, notebooks, and paper are ideal things to purchase at the dollar store. Not everything needs to be fancy and shiny.

As always, Texas Bay is here to help you reach your financial goals. If you need a little extra help covering backto-school expenses, consider applying for a Texas Bay Platinum Rewards Mastercard or a Personal Loan. Apply online now or schedule an appointment with one of our experienced Financial Services Representatives to discuss your options.

Auto Shopping Tips

Shopping for a car? This can be a timely and expensive proposition. Not to mention dealing with dealership salespeople. Ugh. Texas Bay is here to help with our Tips for Auto Shopping.

1. Get preapproved. Don’t go shopping without the advantage –knowing that you have a good rate and how much you can afford. This helps relieve the pressure you might feel when dealing with a car salesperson. Of course, Texas Bay offers lower rates than you’ll find at the dealership, with great benefits such as flexible terms, no payments for 90 days, twice-ayear Skip-a-Payment opportunities, local auto exam inspections, and so much more! Visit our website for more information and apply today!

2. Do your homework. Before walking

into a dealership, know what you want in a car, if not the actual car. This is easy with Texas Bay’s Find a Car online search system. You can search based on a variety of factors, take a Virtual Test Drive, use the Price Curve tool to see if the listing is fairly priced, use the Find Better Price tool to search for a better deal on similar vehicles, get FREE CARFAX and AutoCheck reports, and so much more! All from the comfort of your home.

3. Keep your cards close to your chest. Remember, working with a dealership is a game. Focus on one thing at a time. Don’t allow the salesperson to know too much too early in the game. Always start with the price of the vehicle. Don’t answer the question about a tradein or if you need a loan through the dealership until the price is settled.

4. Be prepared to walk away. This is the best advantage you will have.

If you don’t feel like you’re getting the deal you want, walk away. Quite often, they will try again or, at the least, follow up with you.

5. Don’t buy the add-ons. You think you’re done, you’re in the back office to finalize the deal, and here comes the push to add-on things like extended warranties, tire protection plans, paint protection plans, and other items. Be strong! We know you’re tired at this point, but keep your wits about you and say “no.” Most of these items can be purchased through another avenue at a much lower cost. For example, Texas Bay offers low-cost asset protection options (GAP insurance and Mechanical Breakdown protection) and healthCAR protection (similar to a warranty).

Private Student Loans

Heading back to school and looking to finance it? Of course, you should always go with the Federal option first. But sometimes you need more. Here we discuss private student loans- how to prepare for the loan process, compare your options, and develop a plan for repaying the loan.

Prepare for the Loan Process

Develop a budget.

Look at your entire college career –how much will you need?

• Overestimate expenses to allow for inflation and the inevitable surprise costs.

• Identify your income, including jobs, family assistance, Federal Student Loans, grants, scholarships, etc. Underestimate anticipated income in the event an unexpected situation that may affect it.

• If your budget is more than your income, you need to consider a private student loan. Don’t overborrow. While these loans are more flexible in how they are used, you don’t want to have debt you cannot afford when you graduate. Review your credit report.

• Credit will play a significant role in the interest rate on your student loan. The better your credit, the lower the rate. If you have time, find ways to improve your credit score (a Texas Bay Financial Service Representative can help).

• If your credit is poor, consider asking a parent or other responsible adult to co-sign. This will help you qualify for more desirable rates. But beware, their credit will suffer if you do not make your payments as agreed.

Compare Your Options

Private student loans are available from various places, like banks, credit unions, or online lenders. Some

benefits of going the private route are faster application and processing time, competitive rates, and higher borrowing limits. Compare:

• Rates

• Payment terms

• Application or origination fees

• Early repayment fees

• Ability to add a cosigner if needed

• Is a cosigner required

• Any benefits offered, such as an interest rate deduction for graduating or setting up auto-pay

• Eligibility requirements

Develop a Plan for Repayment

• Borrow wisely. Never borrow more than you need. This is especially critical for a college student, as you don’t know your future ability to repay these loans.

• Make sure you know when your first payment will be due, how much, and how to make the payments. Signing up for auto-pay will often reduce your interest rate. Know how to contact your lenders if you have questions or need assistance.

• Understand how long it will take to repay these loans (Check out our Student Loan Calculator). Make additional payments against the principal if you can. Paying a little

more each month goes a long way toward lowering the interest you pay and decreasing how long it will take to pay off.

Texas Bay is here to help college students with a great student loan program! Complete your application in as little as 15 minutes, and initial credit decisions are often made within minutes! We offer competitive fixedrate loans, starting at 2.74% APR2, and borrowing as much as $65,000 annually. Get great benefits, such as a 0.25% interest rate deduction just for graduating, and cosigners are released after the first 24 consecutive on-time monthly payments. Visit our website for the details, to check your eligibility, and to apply.
