TEXAN:

Note from the Editor Spring is finally here! What a wonderful season for Texans. It’s the perfect time of year to be outside and enjoy the beautiful Texas scenery. One of the best things about living here is having so many fun activities to enjoy and interesting places to go. You may want to take a bike ride and discover a new trail. With Easter around the corner, how about enjoying a gigantic Easter Eggstravaganza with your family at AirHog Stadium? You can also read about some great restaurants to book reservations for Easter brunch. In Texas, this time of year is known for spring showers. If it is raining, there are plenty of indoor places to enjoy too. How about taking your family to the brand-new indoor trampoline park? Try stopping by the new comic book shop to start a hobby or revisit a favorite childhood pastime. Sometimes the weather just makes you want to bundle up, sit on the couch, and watch a ball game. If you get the opportunity, be sure to check out a Los Angeles Dodgers’ game where you can watch two of our local boys that have made it to the Big Leagues. Read all about them in this issue. No matter what you do this fantastic time of the year, make sure you enjoy it!

Protecting Keller Since 1946 THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE KELLER FIRE DEPARTMENT In 1946, following the occurrence of numerous fires throughout the city of Keller, business owners and community leaders acknowledged the need for a fire department. Other neighboring towns also established fire departments; however, Keller was not incorporated as a city and consequently did not have an official fire department. Fire prevention and control was completely reliant on citizens and their neighbors to fight fires with buckets and hoses. Money was raised through a “Pie Supper” at the Rock Gym, and the town established the Keller Fire Department in 1946. THE MEMBERS OF THE FIRST FIRE DEPARTMENT Keller’s first Fire Chief was M. B. Stephenson. The department consisted of Junior and Senior members from the community. The Junior members were high school boys; whereas, the Senior members were community men. Both groups were needed to protect the city throughout the day and night. Senior members were busy working at their primary jobs during the day. If a fire occurred when they were at work, the Junior members would leave school to fight the blaze. The Keller fire department operated under this system until the 1970s. However, the city realized the need for paid firefighters, and in the early 1980s started a paid fire department. Volunteers continued to work nights and weekends. KELLER’S FIRST FIRE TRUCK AND STATION Pictured above in this 1951 photograph is Keller’s first fire truck. The driver is Larry Buchanan. In 1946, the city purchased a 1935 Ford with a 350-gallon tank. The first fire hall located on Lamar Street was used for meetings, and fire trucks were stored at a nearby location. The Lamar Street fire hall was used until 1963 when another building was built on Main Street. Fire Station 1 was built on Keller Parkway (formerly known as Price Street) and remained in use until 1994, when Fire Station 2 and 3 were built. Lastly, Fire Station 4 was built in 2009. SERVING THE COMMUNITY The City of Keller honors the Keller Fire Department who has faithfully served the community for 73 years. They continue to serve Keller citizens as brave first responders, protectors, and strong community leaders. The Keller community greatly appreciates the Keller Fire Department!

When It Rains, IT SHINES By Dr. Claudia K. Beeny

It’s hard to approach the spring months without reminding yourself of the short adage, “April showers bring May flowers.” But this April I’m also reminded of what happens when generosity reigns and people are showered with a little bit of love. A few years ago, teachers at a local school were recipients of a Shineworks Project. House of Shine coordinates these projects, engaging everyone and anyone from local business leaders to local Girl Scout troops. The idea of the program is simple: reuse or repurpose an everyday household item in order to spread shine in someone else’s corner of the world. Over the years, we’ve used everything from corks and popsicle sticks to old shoe boxes and empty egg cartons. Teams work together to develop and implement an idea using their item and must do it within a designated period of time. The thing that differentiates this program from other team building activities is its outward focus: its emphasis on encouragement as a way of serving community. That April, the household item we used was a hanger, and our partners were the 600+ students at the school. Students used one of their art classes to decorate pre-cutout raindrops and then to write their teachers short notes sharing why they think he or she shines. The personally crafted notes were fun to read, but it was the collection of these drops that I think was responsible for the flood of emotion evoked by this project. Once written, each teacher’s collection of notes

was tied onto a white hanger with a sign reading “Showing You With Shine.” The completed projects were works of art, each more beautiful than the one before it and each intended to shower a teacher with simple but loving words of encouragement. It was a poignant illustration of exactly why the phrase “April showers bring May flowers” works. It reminds us that when we nourish something, when we feed it and tend to it, something beautiful and vibrant will grow. By taking time to thank the teachers who serve our children, we nourished them. We acknowledged their individual contributions and, in doing so, encouraged them to keep going…and growing. The same is true of our communities. When we nourish them, they too will grow and become more vibrant. And like the simple, heartfelt notes created by the students, our efforts need not be elaborate. Nourishing your community can be as simple as inviting new neighbors to dinner, waving when you pass on the sidewalk, or warmly welcoming a new person into your established network of friends. I, for one, am glad the cold winter months are behind us, but this spring I’m going to pull out my sunglasses and hope for an April filled with rain, because I know that where it rains, it’s sure to shine.

Every student deserves the Chance to Soar! any students in the Dallas-Fort Worth area don’t have access to that special someone or something that can help make their dreams become a reality. Chance to Soar would like to hear from those students! Chance to Soar was created to help local children become brave enough to reach out and take a ‘chance’ that could change the course of their life. Chance to Soar is a non-profit organization, co-founded by lifelong educators, Dr. Andra Barton and Mrs. Aletha Scheck. Their mission is simple, to provide students with unique learning opportunities, experiences that shape future goals, and tools to use on their path to success. Dr. Barton and Mrs. Scheck are passionate about inspiring students to be bold enough and brave enough to reach out and grab a chance when it comes along. They believe in helping children define their purpose and passion by equipping them to meet their goals, while positively influencing and serving the community. Through donations and collaboration with the community, Chance to Soar helps students build connections with peers and mentors, supporting growth and achievement that will lead to stronger student communities and postsecondary success. Curiosity in children fades all too quickly and needs to be kept alive. Chance to Soar can help facilitate productive futures for children, who otherwise would not have the opportunities needed to succeed. Challenging students’ perceptions of what is possible can change how they view their own future. Children and their parents/teachers/mentors in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (from Waco to Denton), can fill out a ‘chance’ request here: https://www.chancetosoar.org Dr. Barton and Mrs. Scheck are also available for teacher development classes, speaking engagements, school curriculum support, and custom educator coaching.

e opened our doors in November 2018 in Southlake Town Square. Our two other locations, Tanger Outlets and Grapevine Mills Mall, were established around the same time. Our first store opened in the Old Boot Factory in Nocona Texas in the fall of 2016. Our mission from the beginning was to support our food bank that was run out of the Old Nocona Boot Factory building, named Hope 29:11, through the sales of our boots. We wanted to give back to the community in the same way as the founder of Nocona Boots. Her name was Enid Justin, and she was the daughter of the founder of Justin Boots.

Tips for a Beautiful Landscape Written by: Rhonda Love, Denton County Master Gardener

Fresh mulch and a stone border keep this bed looking neat and shows off the flowers. L. Moyer

trellises for vines, border edging, maintenance paths, etc.

B

eautiful landscaping not only makes your home more inviting, it adds value to your property and can even contribute to your dinner table! Garden beds are the crowning jewel, or perhaps the necklace around your home. With the many plant sales in the next two months, now is the time to start getting ready! Whatever kind of garden you want -- herb, vegetable, or flower—you need to create a plan. This will help to prevent mistakes and make the entire process easier. Texas A&M’s Agri-life Extension has numerous resources to assist you along the way. Their planning guide for a vegetable garden is valuable no matter what kind of garden you desire: https://agrilieextension.tamu.edu/ library/gardening/planning-a-garden/ 1. First, you consider the location and shape of your bed. Think about how plants grow in nature – not in straight lines with square corners; they grow in drifts or clumps, so lay out your bed with curves. Test the layout by putting a garden hose

20

along your planned perimeter, or marking it with chalk or spray paint. Look at existing plants and decide which ones to keep. 2. Carefully consider your landscape design for both functionality and beauty: https://aggie-horticulture.tamu. edu/earthkind/planning-the-homelandscape/plants/ Think about the size and number of each kind of plant you need – shrubs, groundcover, and flowering plants. Having a nice border plant adds some pizzazz. Curly-leaf parsley looks beautiful all year long, and provides greens for your table! Ornamental trees will add color and another layer of interest to your landscape. Redbuds, Mexican plum and Texas mountain laurel all bloom in early spring and grow only to about 15’ tall. Consider hardscaping such as

Healthy soil is a must for a beautiful landscape. The easiest way to find out the health of your soil is to have it tested. Texas A&M, and your local extension office make this relatively easy for you. The process is explained in detail at: http://soiltesting.tamu.edu/ publications/E-534.pdf When preparing to plant, your soil will need to be broken up and, most likely, amendments added. The soil should crumble easily in your hand. See for more details. https://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/ library/gardening/soil-preparation/ 3. Remove undesirable plants by digging them out, getting as much of the root system out as possible while preserving as much soil as possible, or smothering the plants and roots. To smother the plants, put about 10 layers of newspaper print paper over the area. Wet it thoroughly and cover it all with mulch or soil about 3-4 inches deep. It may take as long as six weeks to kill the roots, longer for Bermuda grass. 4. Now, finally, you can choose the plants for your garden. You will

have more success if they are native or adapted to your area. Group plants together according to their light and water needs. The information tags included with most plants will tell you the light needs of any plant. Most need 6-8 hours of sunshine a day. It also matters what time of day the light is received because late afternoon sun can be very hot. This site lists the 100 best plants overall for North Texas: https://agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/ blog/2015/08/06/top-100-plantsfor-north-texas/

L. Moyer

This site lists the best perennials to grow in North Texas: https:// dcmga.com/files/2012/10/ntfavorites.pdf Native plant lists are available at: https://npsot.org/wp/trinityforks/ lists-of-local-native-plants/ There are many plant sales coming up in this immediate area. See our website at dcmga.com for a list. 5. Once you have purchased your plants, it’s time to plant them. A good guide is to plant when all risk of frost has passed. Dig a hole about twice as big as the pot. Carefully remove the plant from its pot, spread the roots, insert it into the hole and fill the hole so that the plant is resting at the same level as it was in the pot. Water deeply with a dilute fertilizer the first time. 6. Mulch is critical for success. Mulch helps with both temperature and water regulation, helps to keep weeds to a minimum and provides consistency across your landscape. Organic mulches will break down over time, improving your soil health year after year. Do not allow the mulch to touch the stem or trunk of your plants. See this site for more info: https:// agrilifeextension.tamu.edu/library/ gardening/mulching/

7. Water carefully. Almost all plants look droopy at the end of a day. This is normal and not an indication they need to be watered. If they are droopy in the morning, they need water. You can water in many ways— with a hose, a sprinkler system, irrigation, etc. However you water, avoid having runoff, an indication of over-watering. It is better to water your plants in the morning so that evaporation is minimized during the day. It is always best to water deeply and slowly. Drip irrigation is the best way to get the water where it belongs. See this site for more info: https://wateruniversity.tamu. edu/irrigation/best-managementpractices/ 8. Pruning keeps your plants healthy and beautiful. Prune from the inside out to maintain a natural shape. Pruning of most plants should be done in the fall, or very early spring for natives. https://aggie-horticulture.tamu. edu/earthkind/landscape/properpruning-techniques/

of any garden and you want to be able to minimize their effects on your plants. Inspect your plants often, especially in the evening when insects are feeding; learn to diagnose problems; and, apply the appropriate treatments. Most insects are actually beneficial, so don’t aim for an insect-free garden. The references below will help you identify harmful insects and diseases, and keep your plants healthy: https://citybugs.tamu.edu/idhelp/ https://dcmga.com/north-texasgardening/insectspests/ https://plantdiseasehandbook. tamu.edu/problems-treatments/ problems-affecting-multiplecrops/ 10. Your landscape should bring you joy. ORBA is a mountain bike club founded in 1988. One of the primary focuses of the club is promoting mountain biking in North Texas. We work to achieve this goal through organized rides, races, beginner clinics and other special events such as a Women’s Camp and Kaylee’s Day for Kids.

on USACE, city, county, state park, nature preserve and private properties. DORBA now maintains 22 trails with over 200 miles of trail not only for use by mountain bikers, but also hikers and trail runners. The club currently has around 1700 members, and records 9,000-10,000 volunteer hours a year building and maintaining trails. The estimated value of those hours is almost $250,000 on an annual basis. Those hour totals do

NOT include the countless hours spent organizing community events & races, administering the club or raising funds. DORBA is truly an amazing group of volunteers. All of our trail stewards, board of directors and admin/director positions are 100% volunteer - there are no paid positions. DORBA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

Beginner Clinic at Horseshoe Trail Grapevine 1

The club also began “Blazing Trails” in 1989. The first mountain bike trails completed with DORBA manpower were Northshore and Knob Hills, both on USACE land around Grapevine Lake in Flower Mound. These two trails started as motocross, hiking and wildlife trails that were expanded for mountain bike use. They were soon followed by the L.B. Houston Nature Trail, built as a completely new trail on Dallas Park and Recreation land. Many more have followed, with DORBA gaining agreements to build and maintain trails

s of this writing, I am on the plane returning home from the most life changing trip of my life. You’re probably wondering what made it so life changing? Honestly, I’m still processing it myself! Our trip included seeing Netanya, Haifa, Golan Heights, Tiberius by the Sea of Galilee, Masada and the Dead Sea and then finally Jerusalem and Bethlehem and lots of places in between. First of all, I didn’t go on a regular tour, but rather a tour mixed with some Christian ministry. Beginning in Netanya, we got time to visit with holocaust victims and helped to clean up their front yards of litter and weeds. Most of them spoke Russian as they immigrated from Russia and with the help of translators, they were able to tell us a bit of their story and we got to encourage and love on them. In Nazareth, we got to see all the big sights and then we got to visit the children’s ward in the hospital to deliver gifts and, with their permission, to pray over the parents and their sick kids. There were many Muslim children and families who were grateful and open to prayer! In the Golan Heights, we explored a military war bunker that overlooked Jordan and Lebanon where we prayed over both of those

countries asking God for peace and neighborly love between Israel and her neighbors. We got to take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, where we had a time of worship and also got to learn a traditional Jewish dance. So much fun! That was one of my favorite things we did! The area of the Sea of Galilee was so peaceful and beautiful! That is the area where Jesus centered His ministry here on Earth. There was such a wonderful sense of God’s presence there! In Jerusalem, we saw all the important sights like the Wailing Wall and the Temple Mount, which is where Solomon’s Temple once stood and has been occupied by the Muslims for hundreds of years. The Old City of Jerusalem is split into 4 quarters: Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Armenian. It is a fascinating city that I so wish I’d have had more time to explore!

TEXAN MAGAZINE >

Our guide had a wonderful friend who has a small apartment and rooftop patio right on the Via Dolorosa (the street where Jesus walked carrying His cross) overlooking the Temple Mount where we got to hear her story. Though we were surrounded by a city of strife, it was amazingly peaceful! At the end of our tour, our group had bonded in amazing God-blessed ways and we were all sad to depart. My travel friend and I then went off on our own to Jordan for a couple days to see Petra. What an adventure! We both were a bit fearful to go, but we looked fear in the face and said “NO!! We will not bow down to you!” We saw so many amazing things and never felt any fear. Our guide was warm and hospitable and we fell in love with her! She taught us so many things about her country and the many Biblical sights that are located there. Mt Nebo, which is in the ancient land of Moab (modern day Jordon), is where Moses ascended right before he died to see the promised land. The next day we saw Petra, which is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! We experienced a major dust storm and then due to a blizzard coming in,

had to change our plans last minute, taking a 4 hour drive to Ammon, the ancient city of the Ammonites. When I open my Bible now, it comes to life in a whole new way! You can read about all of these places in the Bible. What an experience! There is so much more to say, but I haven’t room for it. If this is an experience that lights you up like it did me, I’d love to hear from you! I am considering putting a similar family friendly group together for Spring Break, 2020. Drop me an email at Sherry@getfaraway.com and let me know of your interest.

As the seasons change from winter to spring, the decision of what to wear some days is difficult. It’s hot one day and then cold the next. Spring is one of the most difficult seasons to adapt your wardrobe and makeup in order to switch between the extremes. Here are some easy ideas and great products for a seamless transition into spring: OUTFIT IDEAS:

Go from jeans, cardigans and boots to being ready for spring with just 3 easy and inexpensive tips. 1. Roll up your jeans 2. Change out the cardigan for a flowy kimono 3. Switch the boots out for a pair of espadrilles or stacked wedges

BEAUTY PRODUCTS AND MAKEUP:

With a new season comes an opportunity to try new products. Here are a few of my favorite items that will help you create a new look for spring: CC+ Illumination Cream from IT Cosmetics is your complete skin care, SPF 50+ sun protection, and fullcoverage foundation with a subtle touch of luminosity and radiance. This cream has a little bit of shimmer to brighten dull dry skin. Pair this with their Bye-Bye Under Eye full coverage concealer and your eyes will pop! Applying your foundation with a beauty blender leaves your skin flawless. Here is an insider tip: dampen your beauty blender and you’ll use less foundation and save your product. To add some color try NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo! My current favorite color combo is Orgasm/ Laguna. Just the right amount of color in the perfectly peachy-pink shimmery blush. Use the bronzer to add a sun-kissed look. This is great for contouring too! Top this look off with Buxoms Full On Plumping Lip gloss, and you will feel fresh and ready for warmer days!

If your feeling a little pale, grab St.Tropez Sunless Tanner! Don’t forget the glove because it makes a huge difference while applying the product!

Use Monat’s “The Champ” dry shampoo to perk up your locks without any harmful chemicals like most other dry shampoos.

Q+A with Local Texans in focus Ross Stripling Max Muncy Los Angeles Dodgers

Q

What are your hobbies and interests besides baseball?

I am a licensed stock broker/money manager, and I work in that industry in the off-season. I also enjoy hunting, reading, Netflix, traveling, and spending time with my wife.

Q

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

I have been to Fiji, Hawaii, St. Thomas, Jamaica, Bahamas, Costa Rica, London, Whistler, Amsterdam, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand. All of which, I enjoyed. I would like to visit Italy or Australia.

Q Meet Ross Stripling

Q

Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

My full name is Thomas Ross Stripling, and I am 29 years old. I was born in Blue Bell, PA and grew up in Southlake. My mom’s name is Tammy Stripling, and my dad is Hayes Stripling III. I have a brother Hayes Stripling IV, who is 32 years old. We are 3rd generation Texas A&M Aggies.

Q Q

Did you grow up in the Keller/Southlake area? I lived in Southlake from age 4-18 years old. Who has been your biggest role model?

My dad is my biggest role model. He taught me what hard work looks like. He showed me how to live life with God and family at the center. He worked tirelessly for 30 years to give my brother and me a great childhood.

32

What did you love most about living in the Keller/Southlake area?

It is a great place for a kid to grow up. It is a safe and close-knit community. I made lifelong best friends, and it helped shape me into the person who I am today. I was able to play all sports growing up and enjoyed every minute of it.

Q

Where were your favorite places to go when you were living here?

My favorite places to go were Southlake Town Square, Bi-centennial Park, and Dragon football games. Southlake is also close enough to be able to go frequently to Mavs, Cowboys and Rangers games.

Q

How often do you come back to Texas?

Q

How has the area changed since you were growing up?

My parents moved to Granbury, a small town west of Ft. Worth. I spend my off-seasons in Houston.

The area continues to grow and get bigger. 1709 was a two-lane road when I moved there. Now, there are businesses on both sides of the road from Grapevine

TEXAN MAGAZINE > to Keller. It now has every restaurant or shop that you could ever want.

Q

Do you have any funny stories about when you were younger playing baseball in Texas?

I didn’t start pitching until I was 18. One of the first times that I did, I gave up a walk-off homerun. I almost called it quits after that. Glad that I didn’t!

Q

As a child growing up, how much time did you spend on baseball? Did you play any other sports growing up or in high school?

I played baseball 2-3 months out of the year. Growing up, I played football, basketball, baseball and soccer. I played soccer a lot, but quit before high school. In high school, I played football, baseball, and basketball. We won the football state championship in 2007. I never focused solely on baseball until the very end of my senior year.

place to be a ballplayer. We get to play in front of 40,000 plus fans every night. The food in L.A. is also hard to beat. It seems like we find a new restaurant every week.

Q

Q

Did you play against Max Muncy growing up? If so, do you have any stories you can share about that.

Yes, Keller and Southlake were in the same district. I don’t remember at bats or outcomes from high school, but I do remember college. Max had a sac fly against me in college that was the winning run. I’ve hated pitching against him since he was 17, and I am glad that the world is seeing why now.

Q

What do you think about having someone that grew up right down the road from you as a teammate on the other side of the country?

I think it’s great. Awesome to see guys from the DFW area make it to the Big Leagues. It’s even cooler to be teammates with one. It shows you how much talent there is in the area and how small the world can be sometimes.

Q

What do you enjoy most about being on the Dodgers?

The tradition of the organization is pretty special. To share the same playing field as the countless Hall of Famers before me is definitely something that I don’t take for granted.

Q

What adjustments have you made living in Los Angeles versus living in Texas? What do you like best about in living in Los Angeles?

They are totally different. I get to experience the best of both worlds. Luckily, Houston traffic prepared me for L.A. The Los Angeles weather is certainly unbeatable. The loyalty and dedication of our fans make it a great

How did you like going to the All-Star game last year?

It was an awesome experience. The logistics of going from the West coast to East coast plus getting my family and friends there, made it a whirlwind of 48 hours. It was pretty special getting to be in the locker room with the best players in the game. I was able to pick their brains and see how they go about their business and prepare for a game. Hopefully, I will get a chance to do it again soon!

Q

Anything else you would like our readers to know about you?

I get asked all the time by parents about the importance of year- round baseball, travel ball, and how to get their kids seen by scouts, etc. I would like readers to know that I focused on multiple sports as a kid. I played them because it was fun and a great way to make friends. I was a late bloomer and didn’t pitch until I was 18 years old, and yet I was still able to achieve my dream. My advice to parents and young ballplayers is to play sports because you love them. Try different sports and activities to find what brings you joy. Everyone matures at a different pace so don’t compare yourselves or your kids to others. I am so glad that I was raised in Southlake because I had access to so many great things and had every opportunity to find exactly what brought me happiness. I failed many times along the way and often considered quitting. However, those experiences are what led me to where I am today. Be patient, work hard, and be ready to take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself. But most of all, HAVE FUN!

6 DAILY HABITS TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE

TEXAN MAGAZINE >

(NO DIETING REQUIRED) We have kicked off the new year with a little self-care and a lot of selfLOVE. With all the resolution talk in January, we want to take a moment to get real with you—keeping up that same ambition throughout the year (or even passed the first week!) can be tough. Between work, family and what seems like an endless amount of errands, those habits of success can get lost in the mix. The good news? These easy daily routine tips will get you off to a healthy start, without feeling deprived (or hangry!).

Jazzercise Pro-Tip: Start with one new healthy habit per week and add on from there! 1. Wake up early Addicted to hitting snooze? It’s time to shake that habit! According to the Journal of Psychiatric Research, early risers have a 12-27% lower risk of depression than late sleepers, who also tend to have more irregular sleep patterns. Plus, waking earlier leaves plenty of time to get through your morning routine calm, cool and collected. Not feeling the early vibe? Start simply and wake up at the same every day to help regulate your sleeping (and rising) habits

2. Ace Your Morning Routine Plan ahead for your mornings and, if possible, adhere to the same routine each day. Whether the first thing you do is walk the dog, make breakfast or pack a lunch, keeping it consistent will you help you glide through morning with little to no hiccups.

3. Try a Coffee Substitute Whether you’re looking to replace caffeine completely or find a coffee alternative, there are plenty of morning drinks for health out there that can give you a boost of energy. Here are a few of our favorites: • Warm Lemon Water: According to Medical News Today, lemon water has antioxidant properties and contains compounds that improve your

metabolic health. It can also help improve your mood and boost energy levels—not bad for a two-ingredient coffee alternative! • Energy-Boosting Green Smoothie: It’s no secret “green means good,” but this power smoothie by Minimalist Baker is loaded with gobs of healthy ingredients that are great for you and taste amazing (not to mention, it’s gluten-free!). • Teeccino: We know what you’re thinking—what is teeccino? According to its namesake, it’s a “delicious blend of organic herbs, grains, fruits and nuts that are roasted and ground to brew and taste like coffee.” The beverage is naturally caffeinefree and is known to help those who drink it feel an energy boost.

4. Exercise Exercise releases endorphins and makes you look and feel great. In fact, according to WebMD, the American College of Cardiology reported that good health really comes from working out 30 minutes a day, three to five times a week. Walk, bike, dance, do yoga whatever floats your boat. Just get moving.

5. Set yourself up for a good morning the night before Great days begin with good nights. Set yourself up for a productive morning by putting your phone away at least 30 minutes before bedtime, set your clothes out for the next day and meal prep what you can for the day ahead to avoid the stress of rushing the next morning.

6. Be kind to yourself and give yourself a break We’re only human and late mornings and unhealthy snacks are bound to happen. Don’t forget to go easy on yourself and live a little. Resolutions shouldn’t be about deprivation, instead we should be nourishing our lives with healthier choices and a little “me time.” It’s never too late to add some of these healthy habits to your life. Every day is a fresh start and an opportunity to make better choices. See you at the studio!

Keller CBD

To understand how CBD exerts its effects, it is first important to understand our body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is an entire system within the human (and most animals) just like the respiratory or digestive system. It is made up of the endocannabinoid molecules made up by the body itself (yes, our bodies make their own cannabinoids, just like the cannabis plant!) the receptors for these molecules, and the enzymes which create and break down the endocannabinoids. From a natural, therapeutic perspective, there is no question that CBD and the residual cannabinoids together may very well support the body in a great number of ways.

HIGHEST QUALITY

Though hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants, they are not the same. The chemical composition is different, especially when it comes to THC levels, the cannabinoid responsible for the ‘high’ that many people associate with marijuana. Hemp has a much lower THC level, less than 0.3%. Our CBD products come in various forms and dosages to meet each customer’s needs and preferences. You can choose from water-soluble, edibles, tinctures, soft gels, vaping e-liquids, and topical applications. We even have tinctures and CBD treats for pets. Our products are intended to be used as an herbal supplement and no prescription is necessary. Consult your doctor before you quit taking any medications with the intention of replacing them with the natural and holistic option of CBD.

OUR PRODUCT

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a compound found in the cannabis plant which has many medical benefits. Your CBD Store® products are made using only the highest quality, organically grown hemp from Colorado which has been certified by that state’s Department of Agriculture. This phytocannabinoid rich (PCR) hemp has a naturally high CBD level, and an abundance of other beneficial cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC), as well as flavonoids, terpenes, and essential amino acids. We use a CO2 extraction process, which eliminates the need for chemical solvents and produces a high-quality, full-spectrum CBD. For our zero-THC products, the CBD is processed again to remove all traces of THC. Your CBD Store Keller is comfortable and calming, like a spa. Clients can come in to relax, enjoy a sample and have all of their questions answered by the knowledgeable and caring staff. “Our Heart is to educate the neighborhood on what CBD can do for them and help share the freedom of health” Chrissy Crowell, the Store Owner explains, “My clients come back again and again to enjoy the atmosphere and to let me know how much better they feel. I cannot imagine anything more rewarding! CBD is truly life changing. For myself and my clients.”. keller@cbdrx4u.com Our Location:

Time for Some Financial Article provided by Russell G Baker Jr—Edward Jones Financial Advisor

S

pring is here – and for many of us, that means it’s time for some spring cleaning. This year, in addition to tidying up your home, why not try brightening your financial environment? Some of the same moves you make to clean your surroundings may apply to your finances. Consider these suggestions:

Get rid of clutter When you go through your closets, attic, basement or other areas, you may find many items you no longer need. You might be able to sell some of these things or find other ways of disposing of them. And as you review your portfolio, you might also encounter “clutter” in the form of investments that may be redundant to others you own. If so, you might consider selling these investments and using the proceeds to purchase new ones, which may help you broaden your portfolio.

Protect yourself from hazards As you go about your spring cleaning, you may 42

well encounter hazardous substances, such as cleaning agents, paints, batteries, pesticides and so on, which you don’t need anymore and which may pose potential health risks. You can reduce the possible danger from these materials by recycling or disposing of them in an environmentally safe way. Your overall financial situation has hazards, too, in the form of illness or injury preventing you from working, or, in your later years, the need for some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home. To protect yourself, you may need appropriate insurance, including disability and long-term care.

existing possessions When you are sprucing up your home, you may rediscover uses for things you already have. Who knows – perhaps that treadmill that’s been gathering dust in your garage could actually be employed again as part of your rededicated exercise regimen. And you might be able to get more mileage out of some of your existing investments, too. Suppose, for instance, that some of your stocks are paying you dividends, which you take as cash. If you don’t really need this income to support your lifestyle, you might consider reinvesting the dividends so that you can own more shares of the dividend-paying

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be just about physical activities – it can also involve a new set of habits on your part. For example, instead of placing your unread magazines in an ever-expanding pile, try to read and recycle them quickly. You can also develop some positive habits as an investor, such as “paying yourself first” by regularly putting some money in an investment account each month, even before paying all your bills. You can also avoid some bad habits, such

Keller Barracudas

The Keller Barracudas is a Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) swim team. We begin preseason practices in May, and get into full swing in June after school gets out. We have swim meets every weekend, and compete in the Regional competition in July to determine who qualifies for State. Those who place top 5 in their events qualify to compete at the State meet where swim teams from all over the State of Texas compete against each other. This year the State competition will be held at the A&M University aquatic center. Swimming is an amazing sport, and I, Jamie Shults, was a competitive swimmer since age 4.

It can offer many great benefits such as improved motor skills, heart health, and it can be great for kids with asthma to control breathing. Not to mention a lot of the high school swimmers have been in the Top 10% of their class! Being on a team helps kids learn about time management, goal setting, and helps with focus.

The Diamond: An Unusual Customer Service Story

D

uring the 1960s and 1970s, my Grama Lee was an employee at the Social Security office in Florida. She was in customer service.

In those days, many retirees would make the drive over to Social Security to pick up their checks and hand deliver them for deposit at their local bank. Online banking and direct deposits weren’t available back then, and having the check mailed delayed receiving it by a few days. Grama Lee had a regular customer whose first name was Rose. By the time I heard this story, in 1996, Grama had forgotten the lady’s last name. But the story is true, and amazing. For many years, Miss Rose would come to see Grama every month to pick up her check. She came in and visited for a few minutes each time, and she and Grama became friends. Many times when they were visiting, my Grama would compliment Miss Rose on the solitaire diamond ring that she wore. Over time, the full story of the ring was told. This is how Grama told it to me: Miss Rose was at the train station, saying goodbye to “her Beloved” who was being sent off to fight in the first World War. It might have been around 1917, but Miss Rose never said the year. “Wait for me, Rose” he said, while slipping the ring on her finger. She said yes. And, she waited. Her Beloved didn’t make it home, though. Still, she waited. When she was coming in for those social security checks she was alone, with no family left at all. So romantic, right? Fast forward to Grama Lee’s retirement sometime around 1975. Then, seven years after she retired, Grama gets a letter from an attorney. Miss Rose had decided to leave that beautiful diamond solitaire ring to Grama Lee “who had always been so kind to her.” She had no family, of course, having lived to an old age with no descendants. The attorney had spent years trying to find my Grama. She wore the ring for many years. Then, when my Grama married her third husband and the love of her life when she was 72 (that’s another story) she passed Miss Rose’s ring down to me. I wore it for a couple of years, and when my husband proposed we decided to use the stone in my engagement ring. It seemed like the perfect ending to the story of Miss Rose’s ring. I cherish both the story and the ring that represents my Grama’s kindness. If you need help growing your business, I am a Strategic Coach, Brand Strategist & Vistage Chair. I can help!
