It’s that time of year! Home Instead Senior Care participates in the community outreach program called Be A Santa To A Senior! We need YOUR help to brighten the holiday for Seniors who are in need, lonely or underprivileged. H O M E IN S TE A D S EN I O R CA R E My name is Chasity Stanford and I am the Recruiting and Engagement Supervisor for Home Instead Senior Care here in Keller, Texas. In March of 2014, I learned about the Be a Santa to a Senior program that Home Instead sponsors every year. The franchise I worked for had not participated in this event, so the Lord gave me an opportunity to rally everyone from our office, to service our Seniors for Christmas. Our first year, we had a bake sale and raised over $500. That year our team delivered Christmas gifts to approximately 75 needy Seniors in our community. Winter of 2015 we started marketing about the Be a Santa to a Senior program in our community. It grew leaps and bounds and we had numerous individuals contributing gifts here at our office. Christmas of 2015, we delivered gifts to 150 Seniors. By 2016, we had faithful contributors in the community collecting gifts and built strong relationships with many individuals to spread the word about the Be a Santa to a Senior program. By Christmas of 2016, we serviced 300 needy seniors. I am praying this year that again, we can double the number of gifts to our seniors at 600. To our surprise many seniors request for someone just to hold their hand and talk with them for Christmas. As I continue to read the wish list, tears stream down my face. One particular Senior asked for a broom, mop, and dust pan. I felt like there was more to this need, so I reached out to the person who gave me the name. This senior had very little in any personal possessions and wanted to keep his new assisted living apartment clean. That year we really decorated his box and when we delivered, we had wrapped a dish set for him not realizing he didn’t have any. When he opened it, we wanted to help put things away for him and he wouldn’t let us. He wanted to look at his new dish set and said he was so happy to start eating on real dishes. Since then, we have continued to service this Senior. His circumstances seem to have improved very little but is still very much in need. We were told he looks forward to seeing every year. Seeing the needs of our seniors who have lived incredible lives and who have made this country what it is, now being left with so little, must change. Last year I received a wish list for a senior in a nursing home needing a tv. I prayed to God “How are we going to provide a tv? We can barely meet the needs for sweaters, clothes, and necessities.” Not 1, but 3 TVs walked into our office that year. Even for something as small as a tv, God really showed me

® ®

how Big HE is and how HE works. I learned to trust in God fully, because I witnessed his provision. Some of the great needs are lap blankets, Fuzzy socks with non-skid tabs on bottom, regular socks and underwear in all sizes for both men and women, toiletries, non-perishable food items, gift cards to Walgreens, CVS, grocery stores and gas cards. So many seniors are not able to pay for their prescriptions and gas to go to doctor appointments. We are always in need of sweaters, jackets, sweat suits, pajamas, night gowns, robes, house slippers. We also encourage everyone to bring anything you think a senior might need or want. We have deadline for drop off of donations set for December 3 but will not decline any donations even if after this deadline. All donations can be dropped off at our office at 424 Keller Parkway, Keller, Tx 76248. There is a big green elf that will be displayed out front as we get closer to the date. The elf says, Drop off location for BASTAS (Be A Santa To a Senior). You can email me with any questions or information and to schedule anyone wanting to volunteer at chasity.stanford@ homeinstead.com and our office number is 817-427-5555. If someone would like to volunteer their time they can contact me at the numbers above or email me. We had volunteers in the past who helped us wrap gifts, organize the donations that had been dropped off, and helping us to deliver. I thank God for giving me this opportunity to make an impact on our Seniors. Each holiday season as items arrive, our office prays over all these gifts. We pray that God will bless those who receive them and that it will bring comfort and joy to their hearts. It is so humbling to witness God at work during this program. God Bless, Chasity Stanford

29 Days, 29 Gifts

1 Lesson About What It Means to Shine By Dr. Claudia K. Beeny

I learned an interesting lesson about gifts a few years back, and since the holidays are just around the corner, I thought it would be worth sharing. I have always fancied myself a good gift giver. I love finding the perfect treat for someone and then wrapping it in a sturdy box with elegant wrapping paper and tying it with beautiful ribbons. Topped off with a thoughtfully handwritten card tucked beneath the bow, even Emily Post would likely meet my presents with approval. But then I read the book 29 Gifts: How a Month of Giving Can Change Your Life by Cami Walker. It is a true story telling of a woman recently married and then diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. She spent the first portion of the book wallowing in her own self-pity until a good friend and trusted advisor suggested the antidote to her sadness would be giving twenty-nine gifts in twenty-nine days. Twenty-nine separate gifts over twenty-nine consecutive days. No stopping or skipping. Sounds easy enough, right? Immediately I could think of all sorts of small treats I could surprise people with, including gift cards to Starbucks, favorite books, note cards, an inspiring paperweight, a set of House of Shine’s DO52 sticks, and the list went on. In fact, combined with my love of organization, I immediately began planning for how I could streamline my gift giving by preparing all twenty-nine packages ahead of

time. That way, I could “grab and go” each morning and feel good about conquering the challenge. But then I read further into the book and realized the author wasn’t talking about those kinds of gifts. Her story was about giving the other kind of gifts, the kind of gifts that don’t cost money, you can’t plan for, and that don’t come in nice neat little packages. Walker’s idea was to enter into each day open to giving something but without a pre-set plan for what it would be. For instance, you might realize your friend needs a listening ear and decide to forgo your scheduled plans to spend time with her instead. Or maybe a colleague needs you to solve yet another computer problem of hers, so you give her the gift of patience. Maybe you hate running errands, but your spouse mentions you have run out of milk, so instead of going straight home, you make a detour and decide to pick up a gallon. I wish I could say I did it, that I took the 29 Gifts Challenge and knocked it out of the ballpark. But I didn’t. Not the first time or the second time or even the third time. Instead, I would get to somewhere around day 17 or 18 and inevitably my pride or selfishness would get in the way. I would dig my heels in and decide that starting over was better or easier than having to give in, make myself vulnerable, and have grace for my son. After three tries I realized what this—the real gift of 29 Gifts was not in the giving of twenty-nine gifts. The real gift was in being forced to come face to face with what giving really means—being generous even when it is not comfortable or convenient. It’s a good thing to remember as we head into this holiday season. And the book makes a great stocking stuffer!

House of Shine is a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to develop confident, engaged women and children by providing leadership programs that raise self-awareness and are creative and experiential in nature. Healthy Knees, Happy Workout Knee health is super important, not just for maintaining a fitness routine, but for everyday functional movement. While you should always check with your doctor on medical issues, if knee pain is a reality for you, read on. Build Muscle to Support Joints

Modify When Needed

One of the best preventative measures for long-term joint health is to build up the muscles surrounding the joint. According to Ashley McConnell Davis, Instructor and Assessment Coordinator for Jazzercise, Inc., a cross-training approach that strengthens quadriceps, hamstrings, hips, and calves can help improve range of motion.

Many fitness centers offer low-impact versions of their popular classes, but that shouldn’t prevent you from taking your favorite class just because it’s higher impact. If a movement calls for twisting or turning in a way your knees can’t support, try a basic squat or march instead.

Use Proper Technique

Always let your instructor know about your injuries. Instructors can offer tips for modifications and form. Her goal is to keep you moving, so don’t be shy about asking for help!

“In general, knees should always point in the same direction as your feet,” says Claire La Breche, Training & Development Manager for Jazzercise, Inc. Whether you’re in a lunge, squat or grand plié, the knee should be over the ankle, not in front of it. One trick is to keep your weight in your heels, which encourages proper alignment.

Check Your Shoes According to the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, you should replace your athletic shoes after 300–500 miles of walking or 45–60 hours of aerobic dance. Another clue? You’ll see creases on the sides and bottoms of the soles. Shopping, anyone?!

16

Ask Your Instructor for Help

Knee pain is pretty common. But don’t let aging or ailing knees stop you from getting the workout you crave. Again, be sure to consult your physician before exercising with known injuries or limitations. How do you modify your fitness routine when pain strikes? We are a 20 year member of the Carriage Operators of North America (CONA), which is the largest professional organization supporting the commercial carriage industry in America. Throughout the years we have provided “retirement plans” for those that have served us and our clients faithfully. We also believe that our horses must be wellrounded in mind and body. As we have said we are a family-owned and operated business, and our horses work the family farm in Wise County before ever working the “streets” in public service. Southlake Town Square Service: This is our 19th year at Southlake Town Square. We have tried to grow with the venue. All our horses work year-round doing various carriage jobs as well as farming.

This is her 8th year at Town Square. American Creams are a rare breed with less than 500 left. This is her 6th year at Town Square. She is Dolly’s team mate in farming. “CHIP” will be new to Southlake this year. He also is an American Cream and is 15 years old. “JOSIE” a flea-bitten grey QH/Percheron cross. She is the granddam of our carriage company. She is the veteran of our force, will only sub in. When it comes to house brands, it seems like everybody has one these days. When it comes to our brand, it’s a family legacy. It’s a giant step to provide our neighborhood with the healthiest options at prices that every family can afford. We choose products that represent not simply value, but our values—values that support small farmers, family businesses and environmental stewardship; values that have been defining our family’s mission since 1955, never compromising quality for the easy way through. When you see “hormone and antibiotic free,” “free range,” “pasture based” and “nonGMO” on our labels they mean what you expect them to mean, no loopholes. We choose to keep it real by letting our family values define the products we offer to your family. We want the stuff bearing our name to be the best that money can buy, while still leaving room in your wallet for those indulgences you crave. Because when it comes to house brands, we believe every family deserves the best in the house at an Always AffordableSM price.

Q+A with Local Texan in focus Jim Greer President, Keller Lions Club Tell us a little about yourself and your family? My wife Stella and I have three children, ages 21, 17 and 15. We have lived in Keller for over 20 years, after moving all the way from Fort Worth. Where did you grow up? I’m really a Tarrant County kid. I grew up in East Fort Worth, and attended college in Arlington (UT Arlington) and Fort Worth (TCU). Who’s been your biggest role model? That has to be my mother and father. They blessed me with a strong foundation and stressed the importance of giving back to the community. My father’s favorite saying was “anything worth doing is worth doing right.” I don’t always live up to that, but I certainly try. What are your hobbies and interests? Our family enjoys the outdoors, including camping, hiking and water sports. We have a passion for our state and national parks. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? We would love to visit all of our national parks, which is obviously a long term goal. We also enjoy visiting the natural attractions and wonders of other countries, and would love to do more of that.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Volunteer for the Lions Club of course! While that is true, I continue to volunteer a good deal of time for the Boy Scouts. As mentioned above, any chance to get outside and enjoy nature is a welcomed opportunity. What do you love most about Keller? I think it is because Keller is the “complete package.” In other words, it is a complete community. It feels like a real community of people, not just a zip code, and has all the necessary services as well as wonderful places to eat and play. It is a great place to raise a family, and if you are lucky enough to do it, it is a great place to plant your business and watch it grow. Businesses here really support each other. Where is your favorite place to go in Keller? It is really hard to pick a favorite place. I think a great day in Keller would include a healthy workout at the Pointe, a bike ride along the Bear Creek linear park, maybe dinner at FnG or Thai Tina’s, and conclude with a movie at the Moviehouse. Depending on how well my workout went, perhaps a stop at Freddies for desert! How long have you been at the Keller Lions Club? I’ve been a member of the club for about five years. What is the Lions Club? Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an international nonpolitical service organization established originally in 1916 in Chicago. LCI currently has over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.7 million members in 190 countries around the world. The Lions motto is “We Serve.” Most people associate the Lions Club with programs related to sight and sight conservation (think about eyeglass recycling and sight testing) but Lions also support many programs related to hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and many other programs. The Keller Lions Club is the local “chapter” of the LCI

34

TEXAN MAGAZINE > and was established in 1948. We currently have just over 70 members and are growing steadily. Why did you decide to become a member? I started to learn more about the Lions Club when the organization decided to charter (sponsor) our local Boy Scout unit. The Club also supports a Cub Scout unit, the Girl Scouts, 4H and a number of other local youth organizations. As I began to better understand the impact the Keller Lions Club has on the community and the commitment of its members to service, it was clear that the Club was something I really wanted to be an active part of. What are some things (events/services) that the club offers to the community? In addition to sponsoring a number of youth organizations, the Club provides financial support to a number of local charities such as Phillips Wish, Donation House, My Chosen One’s, Stepping Stones, and others. The Club also provides support to first responders, public servants and veterans. For example, the Club has provided support to the Kilimanjaro Warriors (wounded warrior program) for several years, as well as providing free lunches for our Keller Fire and Police Department personnel.

The Keller Center for Advanced Learning Mock Interviews, Police Bike Rodeo, The Community Store House Run in the Dark, as well many other events. Why should people think about joining? The women and men of the Keller Lions Club are making a real difference in our community. If someone is looking for a way to become more engaged in their community, to make a real difference in the lives of their neighbors and to have some fun while doing it— then they should consider joining the Keller Lions Club.

Club members provide free sight screening, allowing the early detection of potential vision issues and helping to get professional help for those who may need it. KLC also provides scholarships to local students, for both for college and trade schools. The Keller Lions Club is also very unique in which we own our land and buildings. By doing so, it has allowed us to sponsor many youth athletics on our facilities by providing them a place to play and/or practice. We also allow other non-profit groups the use our buildings free of charge for their fundraising events. Anything else you would like our readers to know about the Lions club? The Keller Lions Club supports a broad range of charitable organizations and activities. While the majority of the financial support goes to local organizations, KLC support extends to regional, national and even international causes. For example, the local eyeglass recycling center distributes thousands of eyeglasses annually around the world and changes peoples’ lives. Club members also participate in and provide support to a number of community events such as the Annual Keller Fest, Police Safety Fair, Keller Lions Club Fair,

Small Business Saturday was launched in 2010, by American Express in an effort to support local shops that make our communities strong. Held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Small Business Saturday encourages people to #shopsmall and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. This year we have partnered with the Greater Keller Chamber of Commerce and through our shop local program, Keep It In Keller, we have created several avenues to bring awareness to the local shopping options that our residents and visitors have to support small businesses. Keep It In Keller is a shop local program, created and funded by the City of Keller, that works to generate and retain sales tax revenues within the city by promoting all Keller businesses through our keepitinkeller.com, social media and the Keller Shopping & Dining Guide. Each resident will receive a special discount brochure in their next water bill (between Oct

22 and November 12). This brochure contains information on promotions and specials that our businesses will be offering exclusively on Small Business Saturday. Those and additional offers can be found on our website at www.keepitinkeller.com/ event/smallbusinesssaturday. Finally, the best way to keep up with new deals being added is to follow Keep It In Keller on our Facebook page, where we will be adding new and up to date information on the event. Any businesses wishing to participate in the event, should contact the City of Keller Economic Development Department at 817743-4020.

The North Pole Express®, presented by Great Wolf Lodge, began 20 years ago and has become one of the signature attractions of the Christmas Capital of Texas®, along with Snowland at Great Wolf Lodge, ICE!® at Gaylord Texan Resort, Scuba Diving Santa at SEA LIFE Grapevine Aquarium, the Carol of Lights, Parade of Lights and much more. The North Pole Express experience departs from Grapevine’s Historic 1888 Cotton Belt Depot and takes place aboard six beautifully decorated Victorian coaches. The North Pole Express carries passengers out to Reindeer Ridge, where Mrs. Claus boards to continue the journey to Santa’s Workshop. As the train travels along the railway, Mrs. Claus hands out “We Believe” bells to the children. Once the train arrives at the North Pole, the children experience an uplifting musical, aimed to show the inner-workings of Santa’s Workshop, how Santa makes his Frosty Chocolate Snow Milk and the importance of being kind to one another year-round. Following the musical experience, the children receive a complimentary photo with Santa and are free to experience the magic and enjoy the rest of the North Pole Neighborhood, including carousel rides and festival foods. The first rides begin on Friday, November 23, and a total of 90 excursions will be made throughout the Christmas season. Stampeding Bull Market May   Article provided by Russell G Baker Jr—Edward Jones Financial Advisor

A

s you know, we’ve been enjoying a long period of steadily rising stock prices. Of course, this bull market won’t last forever—and when it does start losing steam, you, as an investor, need to be prepared.

Before we look at how you can ready yourself for a new phase in the investment environment, let’s consider some facts about the current situation:

LENGTH This bull market, which began in 2009, is the second-oldest in the past 100 years— and it’s about twice as long as the average bull market.

STRENGTH Since the start of this long rally, the stock market has produced an average annualized gain of 15.5% per year. While these figures are impressive, they aren’t necessarily predictive—so how much longer can this bull market continue to “stampede”? No one can say for sure,

but there’s no mandatory expiration date for bull markets—in fact, they don’t generally die of old age, but typically expire either because of a recession or the bursting of a bubble, such as the “dot.com” bubble of 2000 or the housing bubble of 2007. And right now, most market experts don’t see either event on the near-term horizon. Still, this doesn’t mean you should necessarily expect an uninterrupted streak of big gains. Some signs point to greater market volatility and lower returns. To navigate this changing landscape, think about these suggestions:

Consider rebalancing your portfolio. If appropriate, you may want to rebalance your investment mix to ensure you have a reasonable percentage of stocks—to help provide the growth you need to achieve your goals—and enough fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, to help reduce your portfolio’s vulnerability to market volatility and potential short-term downturns.

Look beyond U.S. borders. At any given time, U.S. stocks may be doing well, while international stocks are slumping—and vice versa. So, when volatility hits the U.S. markets—as it surely will, at some time—you can help reduce the impact on your portfolio if you also own some international equities. Keep in mind, though, that international investments bring some specific risks, such as currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events.

TEXAN MAGAZINE >

Slow Down … So Be Prepared Develop a strategy. You may want to work with a financial professional to identify a strategy to cope with a more turbulent investment atmosphere. Such a strategy can keep you from overreacting to market downturns and possibly even help you capitalize on short-term pullbacks. You could invest systematically by putting the same amount of money in the same investments each month. When prices go up, your investment dollars will buy fewer shares, and when prices drop, you’ll buy more shares. And the more shares you own, the greater your potential for accumulation. However, this strategy, sometimes known as dollar cost averaging, won’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses, and you need to be willing to keep investing when share prices are declining.

Russell G Baker Jr Financial Advisor

IRT-1848D-A

During a raging bull market, it’s not all that hard for anyone to invest successfully. But it becomes more challenging when the inevitable volatility and market downturns appear. Making the moves described above can help you keep moving toward your goals—even when the “bull” has taken a breather.

Make your Holiday Event

Unforgettable

What face comes to mind when you think of Christmas? For a lot of us, the classic face of Santa Claus comes to the front of our minds. At Rent Santa DFW…there are over 20 faces that embody the Spirit of Santa Claus. “How is that possible?” You ask. Well, the true Saint Nicholas is fully engaged in preparation during the Christmas season. He has elves to organize, lists to review, and toys to pack. It is with this in mind that Rent Santa DFW was born. During the Christmas season, when Santa is requested at a DFW event or party, Rent Santa DFW sends out some of Santa’s best friends to represent the jolly old elf and spread joy. Each of the Santas at Rent Santa DFW has a real beard, a custom suit and a heart full of Christmas joy. They embody the spirit of Santa with joy, fun, kindness and a love for all things Christmas! Where do these Santa performers come from? Well, they come from all walks of life. Many have a theatre or film background, but some have a business background. One of the Santa performers in the Rent Santa DFW team is a premiere banjo artisan who is sought internationally for his craftsmanship in the stringed instrument community. They are all interesting! Sharon Hodges, CEO and Owner of Rent Santa DFW sends out Santa performers that will suit each event. There are Santa performers who excel at large Christmas tree lighting ceremonies, some that connect well in smaller venues, and others who are brilliant at children’s parties. Each Santa has his own personality, performance style, and authentic sense of Santa. “It’s the most interesting job in the world,” Ms. Hodges says, “I love matching Santas to special events and being an agent for fun.” Rent Santa DFW also has toy soldiers (on or off stilts), elves (face painting, balloon twisting and shows), and mascot characters (snowman, reindeer, etc) that can accompany Santa. “We know this is a special time of year and enjoy helping clients reach beyond a Christmas party. We want to help create memories that will last long after the Christmas season has ended.” ***If you are looking for a Santa or character to add to your Christmas gathering, you can reach Rent Santa DFW at 214-886-4243 or visit their website at rentsantadfw.com.

It was at the original Springfield location where John and Carol’s son Andy (and his wife, Dana) worked long hours learning the business from the ground up.
