An Exercise in Bringing Out the Best in Others

By Dr. Claudia K. Beeny

I’ve noticed something about people who shine. They have a way of bringing out the best in others. Henry, the trainer I meet with is the perfect example of this principle in action. Over the years he has helped me rethink my identity from someone who was resigned to getting older and softer, to a strong, focused, and mentally tough person whose body can handle whatever workout he throws my way. His bringing out the best in others has been the result of, what I consider, four principles of excellence: He shows up prepared. While earlier I stated that I’m ready for whatever workout Henry “throws my way,” it’s a misnomer because Henry doesn’t “throw” any workout my way. He carefully serves it up … on a 3x5 index card that he carries around in his pocket. By the time I show up to our appointments he has already programmed our time and made sure the machines and equipment have been carefully arranged. His preparedness sets an expectation for hard work. He pushes the limit on what you believe is possible. The index card, deceivingly small, is packed with power. That’s because Henry is masterful at getting you to perform just beyond what you thought you were capable of doing. He carefully sequences exercises with the number of repetitions and weight to create workouts that you’re convinced are impossible. But his requests are thoughtful and measured, so they are possible, and when you reach the twentieth rep and realize he was right, you come to believe not just in Henry but also in yourself. His standards are high. If Henry challenged people to master harder sequences, using heavier

weights and for longer periods of time but wasn’t worried about form, then his approach wouldn’t work. It works because he refuses to compromise quality for quantity. Instead, he stands off to the side counting repetitions and pointing out when feet or grips need adjusting. Henry’s uncompromising commitment to excellence – his and yours – not only builds credibility in him, but it also builds confidence in yourself. It lets clients like me know that not only can we eek out all twenty reps, but we can do it correctly and without shortcuts. He is affirming. Perhaps Henry’s real silver bullet for bringing out the best in others is that beneath his nononsense exterior he is affirming. He is masterful at catching people in the act of doing something right and then pointing it out. He uses phrases like “good job,” “way to work hard,” and “you can do it”. He reminds you can do what he is asking because it’s strong and it’s done it before. The repeat messaging, coupled with his carefully guided performance improvement, makes the affirmations believable, and eventually you come to accept there is truth in what he is saying. When we met for the first time a few years ago, I hoped my body would become a little less soft and that I would get physically stronger. What I didn’t expect is that my meetings with Henry would make me mentally stronger, too. It’s been the unexpected prize inside – an example of over-delivering. Then again, who would expect anything less from someone who shines? Who brings out the best in you and how can you do that for others?

PRO TIPS FOR MAXIMIZING YOUR WORKOUTS!

Do you sometimes feel like you’re working hard without reaping the rewards? Here’s how to make the most of your workout to boost effectiveness and reach those fitness goals. Maximize Low-Impact

Engage Your Core

Use your muscles — not momentum — to transform your body. “Low impact doesn’t mean low intensity,” says Claire La Breche, Training & Development Manager for Jazzercise, Inc. What that means is isolating the muscles and creating resistance. Basically, make your muscles feel like they’re moving through Jello. And if you’re doing a lower body exercise (walking, anyone?!), pump your arms.

Contracting your core during exercise encourages better form and protects against injury. Listen to your instructor or coach; chances are, she’ll call out when she wants you to activate your abs. Just remember to engage your core during every exercise. Every. Single. One.

Add Intensity with Weights Don’t be afraid of heavier weights! Fewer reps with higher weights should be your mantra. Weight training builds muscle, and increasing your muscle mass increases how many calories you burn. Win win!

Stay Hydrated If you’re dehydrated at the start of your workout (hello, three cups of coffee!), you’re more likely to feel dizzy during the workout. Experts say we need at least eight ounces of water every 15 minutesyou’re working out. (So that’s why refillable water bottles are 32 ounces!)

Vary Your Workouts

JAZZERCISE IS 50 YEARS STRONG! To celebrate our golden anniversary, we are unleashing our best offer.

Make Modifications Work for You Forget the same old, same old. You Can’t do a full pushup? No problem. Go to your knees or do pushups against the wall instead. And if everyone is skipping and your knees aren’t there yet, try marching in place. Just listen to your body and, as Claire says, “Don’t stop moving!”

16

don’t eat the same dinner every day. Don’t do the same workout every time. Try power walking outside one day and a group fitness class the next. Your body and mind respond to new environments. After all, variety is the spice of life! What are your pro tips for getting the most out of your workout time?

National Chili Day February 28, 2019 Chili warms the heart on a cold February night, and Texans have long professed their love of this spicy comfort food. In fact, in 1977 it was designated as the official state dish by the Texas State Legislature. There is much debate on what constitutes the perfect bowl of chili. We have stopped by numerous local restaurants and eating establishments to find some of the best choices to warm yourself up on National Chili Day.

Sarah’s Story

M

y world has always been full of animals. Sarah came to us unexpectedly, and her story is full of lessons about how to live life, and be a great leader.

We got Toby in May that year, thinking he’d be 35-40 pounds. He’s topped out at 88 lbs. (surprise), and when he was around 55 lbs. we decided we’d better get him a playmate who could run with him, since Caleb is only 14 lbs. We were pondering this situation when, one evening, we saw a Facebook post from Toby’s original rescuer.

1

FIRE! Sara and her friend Tobi have a private, in-home rescue group called DASHDog. Our dogs are named after them. Between the two of them at that time there were 16 foster dogs. The post was an anguished cry for help, because Sara’s house had just burned down that night. They needed help housing some of the fosters, because more were coming the next week!

So, the first surprise was that we went ahead and accepted Sarah sight unseen. I loved her picture, and her story. We agreed to foster her until the situation settled down. Toby is fabulous with other dogs, and the plan at that time was to continue to foster various DASHdogs. Sarah had been living on the streets of Waco, TX her whole life. When I went to get her, she’d only been in a home for about 30 minutes total. She’s smart and wants very much to please, so she learned quickly at puppy school. She’s a very well-behaved dog, answering all the commands and incredibly loyal. This is the first lesson. No matter what someone’s background is, they deserve a chance to learn and grow. As long as they have the desire to learn and adjust, it can work out very well.

2 3

Peanut butter and Jelly! Then, when we introduced her to Toby, we were amazed at how they were two peas in a pod, salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly – so different but so great together. They fell in love immediately. Within a few days, we knew they should be together, and we realized we were foster failures. That’s the second lesson: plans are good, but adaptability is important too. Sometimes the end result comes out even better than you thought it would with your original plan!

Never give up! Now, three years later, DASHDog is thriving and helping more dogs than ever. Sara and Tobi (the humans) are still out there saving the dogs, and we do our part when we can financially or by helping spread the word on social media about the latest batch of dogs needing homes. That’s the third lesson: even when disaster strikes, we can keep pressing on, fighting the good fight, and sticking to our mission. If we do, there will be many rewards for us on the other side.

If you need a coach, I’m happy to help. I’d love to hear your stories, too! Drop me a line at lisa@lisahharrington.com.

The Beauty of

I have just returned from Europe a few days ago as of this writing from getting to check off another item on my bucket list, a European River Cruise! What a delightful mode of transportation! Yes, it was the end

you’ll be fine. FYI, cobblestones are killers on the feet!

Beginning in Amsterdam, we came in a day early and got to see the Anne Frank Museum, which is a must see! Then we boarded our ship, but stayed in Amsterdam overnight and the next morning, we enjoyed a canal cruise around this beautiful city. Due to drought, the Rhine River’s waters are very low in northern Germany, so the ship took an alternate course through Rotterdam and Antwerp, Belgium. We loved seeing some amazing historic windmills and got to tour one of them. We got a city tour of Antwerp, which has a beautiful old town and cathedral. Then by bus, they took us to Luxembourg and on to Strasbourg to meet our original ship to continue on with our original itinerary. We stopped for lunch and a Christmas market in Luxembourg, so that was lovely. Strasbourg was my very favorite stop on the journey! This medieval old town was not hit by Antwerp, Belgium’s old city center either world war and is the epitome of what

of November when I went, so there are positives and negatives to going this time of year. First of all the positives: The last week of November is when many of the Christmas markets begin to open. Some of these markets are rather small and others are very large and quite elaborate! The negatives: it was cold and sometimes a bit rainy. But if you come dressed appropriately for 40 degree weather, including hat, gloves and scarf and especially with the proper shoes or boots,

A Canal in Amsterdam

we think of a little German town (although now it is technically in France, but has been passed between France and Germany 5 times in the last century!), with tons of half-timbered buildings, gothic cathedrals and narrow streets. It truly feels like you’ve gone back in time! Strasbourg boasts the largest Christmas market in Europe and my feet can testify to that! Every store had it’s own unique decorations above the entrance and below the window sills of every window in the upper floors and apparently they change it up every year! The next day, we made a stop to Riquewihr, France, which is another medieval town straight out of the storybooks! Beginning with a short tour and then strolling on my own, I got to taste some local cheeses and some wonderful local wines. This and Strasbourg were my two favorite stops along the way! Then we finished our delightful river cruise in Basel, Switzerland.

Just a couple quick notes about river cruising: 1. The river cruise companies have no control over the river’s water depth, so be sure to be willing to be flexible. They will go out of their way to make your trip fabulous, so just roll with it! 2. It is not just for old people! There were people of every age on this cruise, from millennials up to a gentleman with a walker! They have tours for active walkers, gentle walkers and bicycle tours at every stop (not all companies have bikes). 3. Everything is included! Yes, you read that right! All excursions, alcoholic beverages at all meals. Everything. (except for the spa, which is always extra!) I highly recommend river cruising, but choosing the right cruise company can be a challenge! So give me a call at 682-237-9296 and let me help you plan it! I can save you tons of time and simplify the process without costing you anymore money. You simply go on vacation and come out with memories that will last a Lifetime! Life is too short not to enjoy!

Presidents’ Day in Texas! > TEXAN MAGAZINE

Presidents’ Day started in the 1880’s for George Washington’s Birthday. The holiday was later changed to the third Monday in February to celebrate Abraham Lincoln as well. Currently, the holiday honors all of the presidents, including the ones that have a connection to our great state of Texas.

Eisenhower’s House

Below are a few locations and events that your family can enjoy over the holiday weekend. Although the holiday is named for George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, we celebrate our nation’s past presidents – especially Dwight Eisenhower! Take part in activities and make crafts. A birthplace house tour is included. For youth up to age 12. CELEBRATE WITH THE PRESIDENTS The Eisenhower Birthplace State Historic Site invites you to celebrate Presidents’ Day on Feb. 16, 2019 from 10 AM to 2 PM. We are located at 609 S. Lamar Avenue in Denison, Texas. The event is for children age 12 and younger with parents in attendance too! EISENHOWER BIRTHPLACE DESCRIPTION Dwight David Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States, was born in Denison on October 14, 1890, in a modest two-story frame house just blocks from Main Street. At that time, Denison was a booming railroad town of nearly 11,000 people. Eisenhower’s father, David, arrived in 1888 to work on the Missouri, Kansas and Texas (KATY) Railroad. Ida, his wife, gave birth to Dwight in the working-class neighborhood on the town’s east side. The family soon moved to Kansas, where Eisenhower grew up. Denison residents recalled his birth when General Eisenhower gained national attention after America entered World War II. He commanded D-Day – the largest amphibious invasion in history – as Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe. Moved by patriotism, Denison residents raised money to purchase the house he was born in and opened it as a museum in 1946. Citizens gave the house to the State of Texas in 1958. Eisenhower’s 1952 run for the presidency introduced the famous “I Like Ike” slogan. He served two terms and is remembered for establishing the Interstate Highway System and the NASA space program. The Eisenhower

Birthplace State Historic Site still tells the story about “Ike,” the first U.S. president born in Texas. The restored house looks much like it did in 1890 and represents the working-class living conditions of the Eisenhower family. Operated by the Texas Historical Commission, which preserves the real places and tells the real stories of Texas, the site is open all year. The hours are: Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 – 5 p.m. Family, senior, and student rates are available to go into the house. A Visitors Center, museum store, and public restrooms are available. The site hosts free annual events such as the Birthday Celebration in October and the spring Easter Egg Roll. For additional information about the Eisenhower Birthplace, call 903.465.8908 or visit www.visiteisenhowerbirthplace.com

What and When is it? Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. It is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar. In 2019, it falls on February 5, 2019 and begins the year of the Pig. It is defined as the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Unlike the New Year observed by those that use the Gregorian Calendar, which is based on a solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on a traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar whose dates reflect both the phase of the moon and the time of the solar year. In Chinese tradition, each year is named after one of twelve animals, which feature in the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.

What activities are included in celebrating? Putting up decorations People will decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are red in color. Reunion dinner with family on New Year’s Eve The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. Normally, this is the family reunion dinner, especially for those with family members away from home. During the dinner, normally fish and dumplings are served signifying prosperity. Firecrackers and fireworks In China, fireworks are thought to drive away the evil in China. Immediately following midnight on New Year’s Eve, fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year and to drive away the evil. It is believed that the person who launched the first firework of the New Year will obtain good luck. Giving red envelopes and other gifts The Red packet is a red envelope with money in it, which ranges from one to a few thousand Chinese Yuan. Usually the red packet is given by adults, especially married couples, and elderly to young children in the New Year days. It was believed that the money in the red packet will suppress the evil from the children, keep them healthy, and give them a long life.

Consider Some New Year’s Article provided by Russell G Baker Jr—Edward Jones Financial Advisor

A

s the year winds down, you may want to look ahead to see which areas of your life you can improve in 2019. Perhaps you’ll decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, reconnect with old friends or volunteer at a school or charitable organization. All these goals are certainly worthwhile – but you also may want to add some New Year’s financial resolutions to your list.

HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS TO CONSIDER: Boost contributions to your employer sponsored retirement plan Good news! Contribution limits will be increasing for many employer-sponsored retirement plans. For 2019, you can contribute up to $19,000 (up from $18,500 in 2018), or $25,000 (up from $24,500 in 2018) if you’re 50 or older to your 401(k) or similar employer sponsored retirement plan. It’s usually a good idea to contribute as much as you can afford to your employer’s plan, as your contributions may lower your taxable income, while any earnings growth is tax-deferred. (Keep in mind that taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.

Try to “max out” on your IRA Even if you have a 401(k) or similar plan,

40

you can probably still invest in an IRA. For 2019, you can put in up to $6,000 in a traditional or Roth IRA (up from $5,500 in 2018), or $7,000 (up from $6,500) if you’re 50 or older. (Income restrictions apply to Roth IRAs.) Contributions to a traditional IRA may be tax-deductible, depending on your income, and any earnings growth is tax-deferred. Roth IRA contributions are not deductible, but earnings growth can be withdrawn tax-free, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you are 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. You can put most types of investments – stocks, bonds, mutual funds, government securities and so on – into an IRA, so it can expand your options beyond those offered in your 401(k) or similar plan

Build an emergency fund Try to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money held in a lowrisk, liquid account. This fund can help you avoid dipping in to your long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a major car repair.

Financial Resolutions Control your debts Do what you can to keep your debts under control. Ultimately, the less you have to spend on debt payments, the more you can invest for your future.

When it comes to your to-do list, put your future first. To find out how to get your financial goals on track, contact your Edward Jones financial advisor today.

Don’t overreact to financial market volatility In 2018 – especially the last few months of the year – we saw considerable market volatility, with huge drops and big gains in rapid succession. What will 2019 bring? It’s always difficult – and usually futile – trying to forecast the market’s performance over the course of an entire year. But, in any case, try not to overreact to whatever ups and downs we may experience. Instead, continue pursuing an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

am thinking about New Year resolutions and what they mean to us. We all want to achieve something and put promises in place that we’re going to lose weight/get fit/start reading, and we sometimes find that we just can’t do it today. Winter can be a hard time for people – the shorter days can bring bouts of melancholy to anyone. It’s usually the third week in January when the realization that you haven’t stuck to your resolution hits you! So, in the bleakest month of the year you start beating yourself up for not keeping your resolution. Not so this year! “How?” I hear you ask! Well, this year, treat every day as a new beginning. Tell yourself this is the day that I can do the things I want to do. Any day you are lucky enough to be alive can be the day that you launch your dream. Any day you are lucky enough to be alive can be the day that you start to eat healthily/ get fit/ give up smoking/ work on your new business. I woke up last year and realized that at age 43 if I didn’t figure out what my dream was and get working on it that I would end up being old and looking back on my life with regrets. This is just unacceptable. If I didn’t do it then, when was a better time? I got to thinking… All things fashion and interiors related have always been my passion, but Ireland in 1991 had limited career options in this space for a college grad. Fashion was not an area my parents saw as suitable as they didn’t think I could make a decent living Get your fashion that way. At that time, questions answered here. most of the roles that exist today didn’t exist Email questions to then - well not in Ireolive@stylebyolive.com land anyway!

Fast forward to getting a bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance (which I hated!) and then a Master’s in Computer Science (which I loved). After college, I worked in several corporate roles until I had my daughter in 2010. In 2015, we made a move to Texas for my husband’s work and I was a stay at home mom. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved being a stay at home mom, I am pretty domesticated, but is this it?! Then 2018 arrived, and I woke up. I mean - I WOKE UP!!!! All these questions came bounding into my head. When had I ever really worked in a role I truly LOVED? Where I didn’t question everything I did and think it was probably wrong? When I was a teenager working in fashion – retail /model / buyer – that’s when! Was I going to look back at my life later on and say I should have tried? NO! So, I decided, with much encouragement from family and friends, to finally pursue my dream. At 43 years old I started my business as a Personal Stylist – Style by Olive. I was never going to achieve anything if I didn’t try… February 15th, 2018 was the day I launched my new business, Style by Olive, and I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions of my life. Not just because I love it, but because I have grown in so many more ways over the last year. My confidence in myself has soared and my utter belief in my skills has underlined to me the importance of pursuing your dream. Style by Olive started out with a view to styling ladies in the DFW area, but has grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined! Make 2019 the year you will do YOU. It doesn’t matter what day of the year you pick, just pick it! And good luck!
