TEXAN MAGAZINE >

All Aboard the 9920 Locomotive Trains have been an iconic symbol of Keller since the city was founded and named after a railroad foreman, John C. Keller. The town, originally called Athol, agreed to change its name to Keller in exchange for a train stop and depot in the town. The first train came through Keller on May 9, 1881. As a reminder of the city’s railroad history and origin, the city created a train park consisting of a locomotive, box car, flat bed, and passenger car. The passenger car was a 1917 Rock Island Rail Car which was purchased in 2011 by the Old Town Keller Merchant Association. The other two cars were out-of-use cars donated by BNSF. The Locomotive 9920 was also donated by BNSF and was part of the largest fleet of classical power “E” units until 1992 when they were phased out. This locomotive has been in Keller since 1998 and was a commuter passenger train that had service all over Texas. Burlington Northern produced the 9920 in July of 1954. Although the locomotive was originally part of a four car train park, the engine stands alone on display in Old Town Keller.

ADOPT IT! The Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) Keller Regional Adoption Center is one of several satellite locations that is extremely successful in matching animals with families. Our main location is the Saxe-Forte Adoption Center in downtown Fort Worth. We take care of thousands of animals each year! HSNT has animals available for adoption in four locations, seven days a week (Keller Regional is closed on Sunday due to it being in a city facility). We have adoption events most weekends all over the metroplex! We would love to grow our volunteer base. All locations (Keller Regional, Keller Welcome Home, Benbrook Waggin’ Tails & Saxe-Forte Adoption Centers) can use volunteers on a daily basis to help with the animals–walking, cleaning, bathing, and socializing our animals. We also have a need for photographers and videographers! Students can volunteer over 13, with a parent present. Please email 8volunteers@hsnt.org for more info!

We run solely on contributions from donors. Whether you donate your time (photography, dog walking, adoption event set up/clean up), or financial support (Amazon Wish List items, cash or check, dog/cat toys) we need YOU. HSNT’s Community Outreach & Education Program offers a variety of free educational programs to community members of all ages. We even have three child-friendly educational dogs, Harli, Ziva & Annabel, who can not only demonstrate proper animal handling and training but can also help children overcome their fear of canines.

HSNT’s Community Outreach & Education Program offers FREE presentations to a variety of venues including: • Community Centers • Churches

Wild About Harry’s Who’s Harry? The waning days of the Great Depression, Harry Coley was born in the small town of Hollis, Oklahoma. Like most small agricultural towns of this era, life was dusty, full of hard work and at times extremely monotonous. During the hot summers Harry’s mother, Sarah Frances, would bring some relief to the sun scorched days by making her famous frozen custard. Harry remembers his mother’s frozen custard as a “bowl of heaven” and knew from the first spoonful to the last, he was tasting something special. These days, Harry does not have to rely on his memory to savor the taste of his mother’s frozen custard. Fortunately, you do not have to listen to Harry’s recollections of life in Hollis to appreciate the creamy taste and cooling effect his mother’s frozen custard has on one’s palate. We hope you too will enjoy magical memories when you take a bite of frozen custard. Harry will, of course, be ready to relate tales of life in Hollis to anyone who cares to listen. Fast forward to 1996 when we opened Wild About Harry’s on Knox Street in Dallas. From the start, Texans ate up our unique blend of food and fun. They fell in love with our winning combination: my mom’s delicious, old-fashioned frozen custard, our scrumptious, awardwinning hot dogs and our relaxed Key West-casual atmosphere. Today, our restaurant is a gathering place for every generation – from tiny tots to senior citizens. In fact, our food is so fantastic and our restaurant so special, we’ve won countless awards, been featured in dozens of publications and visited by celebrities. I’m proud to tell you that everybody is, well, wild about Wild About Harry’s! All the best, Harry Coley Founder, Wild About Harry’s

16

TEXAN MAGAZINE >

Great food with a dose of Harry. Wild About Harry’s is, literally, the top dog. Serving doggone great hot dogs and homemade custard, Harry’s is known for its atmosphere where Key West-casual meets Texas charm. We’ve not only won awards from the Dallas Observer and D Magazine, but we were named best hot dog by AOL City Guide. And it’s no wonder. Our gourmet hot dogs are made from 100 percent lean beef brisket. Choose from a selection of lip-smacking varieties, including Chicagostyle, Texas-style with and New York-style. From our friendly customer service to our décor, fun is what Harry’s is all about! Every inch of our eatery is laid back and colorful. The ambiance is eclectic: along with cool memorabilia, our walls are lined with articles about Harry and photos featuring Harry’s happy customers — just like you.

What makes our custard so darn good? Harry’s mom’s secret recipe, of course. Sarah Frances Coley perfected this recipe in depression era Oklahoma by taking the freshest ingredients from the nearby country store and mixing in a little “mom” know-how. Her frozen custard is a dairy product with an assortment of different fruits and candies. Custard has less fat than premium ice cream; and is creamier, smoother, and has a denser texture with less air than ice cream and yogurts. Just exactly what ingredients fill the custard, we can’t say – that’s the secret to our recipe. But even though the recipe’s a secret, the custard is not, so come by and try one of our many recipes of frozen custard. Harry’s frozen custard is hand dipped, and made fresh daily. Look for our custard both at Harry’s and in your local Metroplex Central Market stores.

Come, Sit & Stay At Mutts Canine Cantina

TEXAN MAGAZINE >

By Brooke Johnston

Dog parks have evolved over the past decade beyond the typical stand-alone offleash field. The nation’s most popular dog parks now offer unique social experiences for pups and their human companions alike. One of Dallas-Fort Worth’s most popular dog-focused concepts – Mutts Canine Cantina – is far from traditional, offering dog owners an urban oasis that allows them to enjoy all their favorite things in one great place. Not your average dog park, Mutts is a dual-concept, social dog park with a communal beer and wine garden and several HD TVs. A separate patio area features concession-style food options like Mutts’ original Chicken Sandwich, gourmet coffee, handspun milkshakes, and a special Doggie Menu. Mutts features two detached, fenced-in lawn spaces – one each for large and small breeds – that expand over an acre of land. This gives pups plenty of space to exercise, run freely and play safely in both shaded and unshaded areas, while owners relax, socialize and spend time with their four-legged bestie. The premier dog park is accessible with a Day Pass, Monthly Pass or an Annual Membership, which includes free WiFi, Bark Rangers who provide water and pick up your mess (and your dog’s) and a dog washing area. To Come. Sit.Stay® at Mutts, dogs must be over four months old,

spayed or neutered, well behaved, current on all vaccinations and off-leash trained. You don’t have to be a member or have a dog to hang out on the beer-garden-style patio. Whether you’re meeting a group of dog lovers or hanging solo with your pooch, you can soak up the sun, watch the big game or enjoy an adult beverage under the large oak trees on the patio. In addition to providing a place for dogs and their owners to socialize, play and indulge in delicious food and drinks, Mutts gives members plenty of reasons to paw-ty. Mutts hosts frequent caninecentric special events, including weekly “Yappy” Hour, Pints for Pups fundraisers, Howl-O-Ween costume contests, Santa “Paws” visits, Downward Dog Yoga, dog birthday “Pawties” and more.

Mutts Canine Cantina currently has one location at 2889 Cityplace W. Blvd. in Uptown Dallas, next to its sister concept, The Rustic. A second location is opening in fall in Clearfork along the Trinity River.

They plan on opening one to two new corporate locations in 2018 to further prove out the concept while simultaneously marketing to franchisees.

Cool Texas Treats

Texas Ice Cream was started six years ago in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. An ice cream truck that served fresh, soft-serve ice cream was a novel idea in this part of the country. As we continued to serve more and more folks in neighborhoods from Denton to Fort Worth, we realized that families were anticipating our next visit. Our regular, weekly routes made it possible for families to plan on our arrival with the added bonus of having a little more control of their kids. For the record, kids with messy rooms and incomplete homework never get to have ice cream from the Texas Ice Cream truck. After slowly driving away from a stop in one of our neighborhoods, one driver remarked on how rare it is to see families outside interacting with neighbors, kids playing in the lawn and everyone with a smile on their face. The driver summed up the scene quite nicely by saying, “Bringing neighborhoods together, one ice cream cone at a time.” The idea for Texas Ice Cream was founded in the halls of SMU’s Cox Business School. David Croson of the Cox Strategy Department and others from the Cox Entrepreneurship Department, helped to foster the idea that a softserve ice cream truck would work well in the Dallas Fort Worth market. The business climate of North Texas is very welcoming to entrepreneurs with new ideas and we are happy to continue to grow our business in the area. From the very beginning, Texas Ice Cream strives to bring the folks of North Texas a first-class truck that serves the best soft serve ice cream money can buy. Our drivers are known for their professionalism and courtesy. We realize there are many places to find ice cream around the metroplex, which is why we truly appreciate when folks support our business.

Q A

Tell us a little about yourself and your family?

I have two children ( Jace and Jamie ), they were both competitive swimmers at Keller High School. I have been married for 33 years to my husband Mike and we have lived in Keller for 24 years. I graduated from Texas Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Q A Q A

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in east Fort Worth. Did you enjoy swimming as a child?

I have always loved the water – when I was a kid I tried to dig a pool in our back yard. I was a competitive swimmer growing up.

Q A

Who’s been your biggest role model?

My parents ( Pat and Truman Marshall ) are my biggest role models. They are amazing people who always put helping others first.

Q A

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love animals and I have 5 dogs at home. I am also a big Dallas Cowboys football fan.

If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

Tahiti or Australia – the water looks so beautiful. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Playing with my dogs- taking vacations with my family. What do you love most about Keller?

Q

Q A

How long have you been at the Keller Natatorium/ Head Swim Coach?

I have been the Keller High School Head Coach and Natatorium Manager for 10 years – before that I was in Fort Worth for 23 years.

Is there a place that you most enjoy going swimming or have been swimming in the world?

A Q

The Florida Keys were very nice.

Any safety tips for summer time fun at the pool?

Never swim alone/ always wear a life jacket in a boat/ have a designated parent watching children at all times. If you had to start a new career not in swimming what would it be?

I would like to be involved with animal rescue.

What advice do you have for parents of children that either have a strong love for swimming? Do you recommend they join a swim team?

A

Get them on a team. Lakeside Aquatic Club is the one we have at the KISD Natatorium and they are outstanding.

Q

What about parents of children that are fearful of the water? What suggestions do you have for them? What do you think is the best way for children to get over their fear?

A

Slowly introducing them through lessons at a young age is best.

Quick Summer Getaways Summer Vacation Trips with your Four-Legged Friends. Dinosaur Valley State Park. Some people like to take impressions of their dog’s paw print. How about a chance for your pet to see how his print compares to a dinosaur? This unique state park contains real dinosaur tracks right in the bed of the Paluxy River. You and your dog can carefully head down to the the river (some tracks are submerged, some are in the banks, depending on the water level) and touch the tracks made by Theropod and Sauropod dinosaurs. You’ll also find plenty of swimming, hiking on trails, picnicking and camping, and you can’t miss the two fiberglass dinosaur models in the park: a 70-foot Apatosaurus and a 45-foot Tyrannosaurus Rex. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/dinosaur-valley Galveston Island State Park. Located at the west end of the island, this nearly 2,000-acre park spans the entire width of the island, including both beach and salt marsh frontage. This is a great place to see wildlife, including birds and ducks, raccoons, marsh rabbits, and even the occasional armadillo. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/galveston-island Cleburne State Park. Located 20 miles east of Glen Rose, this state park is a favorite with mountain bikers but they’ll also share their trails with you and your dog. The park’s Cedar Lake is a great choice for dogs that are fearful of loud noises because this is a no-wake lake. It prohibits the use of jet skis and other personal watercraft so it’s nice and quiet! Your dog will find plenty of spots along the lakeshore for a dip. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/cleburne Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Known as the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro Canyon goes on for 120 miles through the Llano Estacado (“staked plains”) region of the Texas Panhandle south of Amarillo. Eroded for over a million years by a fork of the Red River, the canyon is the second largest in the U.S. and presents some of the most scenic vistas in the Southwest. The 20-mile-wide canyon is 800 feet deep at its deepest point. You and your dog will find plenty of fun among Palo Duro Canyon State Park’s 25,000 acres of rugged landscape, hiking, camping, picnicking and nature study. https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-duro-canyon

Great Vacation Experiences for your Tax Refund Dollars No matter how much you are getting back from the IRS this year, here are my picks on the best values out there, as well as some splurge-worthy trips that offer a fabulous once in a lifetime experience!

1. Australia is on many people’s bucket lists and with good reason! Like our own country, Australia has much to offer from the Great Barrier Reef, with its amazing beaches and the zoo without fences on Kangaroo Island, to the big rock called Uluru in the great outback and world famous vineyards found throughout the country. If you are going to take this long flight “down under”, you may as well see as much of the country as you can in the time you have!

2. China is also offering some amazing deals right now to come and visit! I see many deals come across my desk that include airfare and 5 star accommodations, as well as many meals and entry fees into the sites. I am heading there myself next week as of this writing, so I will share my experiences in the next issue. Stay tuned…. 3. Croatia has become quite popular and still a great value according to those who have visited. It is known for its amazing beaches surrounded by sapphire waters and ancient walled villages. The country is also quite mountainous and absolutely lovely as you move inland. Dubrovnik, which has an amazing city wall dating back to the 9th century, is a great place to begin your journey in Croatia or you might try one of the many cruises that now stop in several Croatian towns along the coast.

4. Puerto Rico is a great place to spend your money! As you probably know, the country was hit quite dramatically by the hurricanes and they have been working steadily to get everything back to normal, but it has been a slow process restoring the utilities in the non-tourist parts of the country. The best way to help Puerto Rico get back on its feet is to go visit and spend your money! Of course, the tourist areas were the first to be repaired so you will not be roughing it on your vacation. You will enjoy the gorgeous beaches, the history and culture, the coffee plantations and be sure to see the bioluminescent waters! It is a must-see that is found in only 5 places in the whole world and Puerto Rico has 3 of them! And it’s just a short flight away from DFW!

Not Another Manic Monday! You know the drill. Alarm goes off, coffee is brewing... actually, who am I kidding?! Alarm is code word for whichever kid makes themselves known first. My 2 year old likes to joyously announce “I’m awake Mama! I’m awake!” as if there’s any doubt about it. ...sound familiar? My days ALL start at full speed, and everyone from my two young kids to my boss, deserve the best of me. Nothing intensifies the grind of the workweek staring you down like Monday morning. I am busy being a full time working Mom, wife, friend, employee, boss. ...is this you? Have you been in these shoes? ARE you in these shoes? Luckily there’s one easy button in my life that turns my Mondays from manic to motivated. Enter Jazzercise. I won’t argue it takes some commitment to get my kids and myself dressed for a workout & out the door (cute workout clothes do help, but that’s a topic for another day). As soon as I pass through those doors and step onto the dance floor, I know a weight will be lifted - literally and figuratively. I do the work, sure, but moving to music reduces stress, elevates mood, and gives us a venue for expression. Interval Fusion is my favorite. A HIIT (high intensity interval training) class with “equal parts circuit based cardio and strength training,” Interval Fusion let’s me dance my heart out and fatigue my muscles in a way that doesn’t allow the stress of my morning to follow me out the door. There’s just nothing like showing up and having someone tell you exactly what to do - “let go of the stress! Tighten your core! Keep your head in line with your spine…” Jazzercise leaves no guesswork, and I get the most out of that one hour workout because I know exactly what to do. Some days I work harder than others, but I’ve never left a class feeling worse than when I arrived. Never miss a Monday. There’s a reason this statement is so commonly shared. Life is just better after a workout! No matter the length of your to do list, motivation comes easier when your mind and body are fit to take it on. Find a tribe that celebrates you...that lifts you up & encourages you! There is no shortcut, it takes time to build a better, strong version of yourself. We got your back... from manic to motivated. SUNNY SIDE

UP

House of Shine is a 501(c)3 non-profit whose mission is to ignite the power within and ultimately change the world for the better by exposing children (from all walks of life) and women (in all stages of life) to their SHINE (Strengths, Hobbies, Interests & Irritants, Needs and Experiences). We are focused on creating confident, engaged citizens by providing leadership programs for students of all ages.

By Dr. Claudia Beeny Sitting on the shelf in my kitchen is one of my most prized possessions, the kind of item that immediately comes to mind when someone asks what you would grab from your home in the event of a fire. It’s a simple framed picture of a glass of orange juice, half full. Or is it half empty? During the almost twenty years since framing this New Yorker cover, I have come to realize that whether the glass is half empty or half full depends on who is viewing it and the lens with which they have decided to walk through life.

Those who are wired to worry will see the glass as half empty. They focus on what isn’t there and all the bad things they are convinced will happen when the orange juice is gone. Those who view life more positively see the glass as still being half full. They focus on what is there and why they are grateful for what they have. This simple image has also given way to a favorite family exercise that started with my oldest son at the bus stop one morning. We had just finished eating breakfast and were waiting for the school bus in the rain. Ricky was complaining about getting wet when, inspired by the glass of orange juice, I challenged him to think of three up-sides to the rain. At first, he hemmed and hawed, but then begrudgingly Ricky admitted that the rain would help the grass grow, that being in school on a rainy day was better than sitting in school on a perfectly sunny day, and that puddles were fun for jumping in. And, oh, for good measure he remembered that with rain often comes a rainbow. We treat this activity a little bit like a sport in our house because the process of finding the positive instead of dwelling on the negative is a little like strengthening your bicep. Give it some resistance and the muscle gets stronger. Give it a try. It’s summertime. Is your year half over or do you still have half the year left?

Keep your landscaping

> TEXAN MAGAZINE

BEAUTIFUL in the summer time.

By Wanda Stutsman

Summer is the time to enjoy your Spring work in the garden. All the hard chores of weeding, planting and mulching are gone with the cooler temperatures. Planters should be full of annuals and flower beds should be thick with growing perennials. To keep your garden thriving throughout the summer practice these simple tasks. Check your sprinkler heads and dripper lines. As plants grow they block the spray of water and often times the sprinkler head needs to be raised or adjusted. Ensure that when you water the plants are getting enough through the mulch so you do not have to water often. Place an empty tuna can at the base of the plant and run your sprinklers for the set time. The can needs to be full by the end of the cycle. Adjust the run time or move mulch away from the base of the plant to ensure adequate watering. Remember the water is needed at the base of the plant not on the foliage. Do not let Petunias dry out. They do not recover and will never flourish. Cut bloom stalks from Spring bloomers like Iris, day lilies, daffodils, and columbine. Put off new landscape plantings until the Fall. Summer plantings require twice the care (water) that a Spring planting requires. Pinch back Coleus so they grow in a full round manner and not tall and leggy. Pinch 4-6 inches off at a leaf node. Do this once per month all summer long. Fertilize every 4 weeks for gardens, 2 weeks for containers if using a water soluble fertilizer. A slow release fertilizer should have been added at Spring planting and again in mid-Summer. Your garden needs very little of your time now so sit back and enjoy the butterflies and hummingbirds. 48
