Clear by Carys Davies Paperback £9.99
Like her two earlier books, "Clear" is short, but what the author manages to include in 146 pages is craftsmanship, telling a more complete story than many of her contemporaries would take far longer to recount. As I read this book I was thinking her stylish brevity places her alongside Claire Keegan.
Most of the events take place on a remote small fictitious Scottish island somewhere between the Shetlands and Norway. The reader is immersed in the surroundings. The weather, often inclement, plays a significant role in the narrative which basically covers just a month.
The three main characters we get to know quickly; their thoughts, their current situation and their earlier lives.
Set in 1843 this is the time of Highland clearances; landlords favouring sheep over tenants.
Ivar is the sole inhabitant of the island; the rest of his family either choosing to emigrate or having perished at sea. Pegi, his horse, a blind cow and some sheep his companions until he discovers John Ferguson unconscious on the beach.
John and his wife Mary are destitute; he being a clergyman who has resigned his parish to help found the new Free Church of Scotland. Through family connections John takes on a remunerative mission to visit the island to tell Ivar he is
being evicted. Nothing goes quite to plan, an accident after his arrival on the island makes him dependent on Ivar and the two become close even if neither can speak the other's language.
However John is a fast learner and they end up communicating; the text then is littered with dialect which enhances the story. (There is an Author's endpiece about this which is worth reading when you finish the text.)
This novella sits alongside her two earlier books, "West" and "The Mission", set in the States and India respectively; also highly recommended and both popular with our regulars. Carys Davies is a very succinct author, her themes ambitious and diverse.
Not a book to hurry as that would risk missing the quality of the language. Great for reading groups, being short should make it a popular choice!

Do you have something rusting away in your garage or garden awaiting restoration?
Or perhaps with the warmer weather coming, it’s time to breathe new life into metal garden furniture?
Then help is at hand through MB Finishings.
Tewkesbury man Mike Bedford set up MB Finishings over 10 years ago, offering shot blasting, bead blasting and powder coating services.
Mike and his team pride themselves on quality service, carrying out a huge variety of work. This ranges from bespoke fabrication projects, garden furniture, radiators, car/bike parts, frames and wheels, to medical equipment, agricultural and industrial machinery.
Shot and Bead blasting can remove a wide range of contaminants, including debris, rust,
NEW LIFE FOR OLD METAL OBJECTS
paint, and scale. It can smooth out surfaces, making them ideal for coating.
Shot blasting creates a slightly textured surface. The added texture allows for powder to adhere to the surface more, increasing the coating's durability.
Powder coating is a surface finishing process that uses an electrostatically charged powder to coat a variety of metal materials. The powder is then cured to create a tough, durable and attractive coating.
Powder coating provides better performance than wet paint- designed to protect and enhance metal finishes, it is more
cost effective, it is more resistant to chipping, fading, scratching, rusting and other wear because of the thermal bonding it undergoes during curing.
Powder coating is more environmentally friendly than wet paint.
Cleaner application processes: Unlike wet paints and other solventbased coatings, powder coating is free from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPs).
MBF’s process emits
virtually no air pollution. It can be applied to virtually any type of metal, including steel, iron, copper, and aluminium.
It offers a durable attractive finish, suitable for both internal and external applications.
There are plenty of
stock colours available, but MBF offer bespoke services too. Get in touch 01242 620518 or 07734 392483, send an email info@mbfinishings.co.uk or pay them a visit MB Finishings, Unit 2 & 7 Alpha, Orchard Industrial Estate, Toddington, GL54 5EB. See website www.MBfinishings.co.uk

Heroics and Magic: Two Museum Talks
Tewkesbury Museum hosts two public talks this March. The first on Tuesday 4th looks at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Probably the most famous sea battle in British history, it features one of the most famous and revered Britons, Admiral Horatio Nelson. Nelson’s victory over Napoleon’s Franco – Spanish fleet finally ended the threat of a French invasion and secured British naval supremacy for the next century.
But this is not a dry story for military historians. The rise of Nelson, his sometimes-wayward brilliance, and his scandalous love affair with Emma Hamilton form the backdrop to an epic, tragic battle.
On a local note, the last surviving member of Nelson’s crew, William Sandilands, lived in Well Alley, and is commemorated in Holy Trinity Church.
Our speaker is Sally Ferrers from Cheltenham U3A who admits to being “fascinated by …Trafalgar and the character of Nelson”.
In total contrast, on Tuesday 18th we have a History of Magic. Conjurer Bob King, a member of
the Magic Circle, recounts the history of magic from Ancient Egypt to the current day. With a short performance.
Both talks are at Tewkesbury Baptist Church, Station Road.
Start 7 PM (doors 6.40). Entry £4 per person including tea/coffee and (seriously delicious) homemade cake. The talks are organised by volunteers. All profits go to Tewkesbury Museum.

Best friends take on cancer
Two best friends who were diagnosed with cancer and managed to defeat the disease together are holding a charity ball to raise much-needed funds.
Neighbours Helen Banwell and Natasha Bowen from Hanley Swan, near Great Malvern, met over their garden fences during the Covid lockdown.

Following treatment, both mums were declared ‘all clear’ and now they want to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK and Breast Cancer Now.
The charity ball at Twyning Park, near Tewkesbury, on March 8 will include an auction overseen by TV antique expert Philip Serrell.
Helen said: “After meeting over our back fences we became great friends and our families spent lots of time together.
“Of course, we never knew that we’d both be diagnosed with cancer within months of each other.
“Last year was tough for us both and we gave each other support and
after treatment and operations we were given the all-clear.

OSTEOPATHY
ADVICE with Louise Freeman, Two Rivers Osteopathy
SHOULDER PAIN:
WHY YOUR DESK JOB MIGHT BE TO BLAME
“Help my shoulders are rounding, I have shoulder pain after work, or when I sleep I have to shift between shoulders”.
Shoulder pain is more common and it’s no surprise with modern day lifestyle demanding more desk work. I don’t want to be cliché but if only I had a pound for every patient that comes through the door with new or pre-existing shoulder pain! From an osteopathic perspective, the discomfort is very rarely an isolated issue, and your desk job may be the silent culprit.
When you are at the desk for multiple hours in the day the shoulders tend to round forward causing the head to crane toward the screen. The chest muscles tighten, the upper back muscles weaken, and your poor shoulders are left crying for help. Add in the gravitational pull of hours spent scrolling on your phone.
But the story doesn’t stop there. That slouched position throws off your entire body’s alignment. Your neck strains to hold up your head, leading to stiffness and headaches. Your spine compensates, which can trigger tension all the way down to your hips and lower back. Suddenly, what started as a little shoulder rounding turns into a full-body protest.
Osteopaths see this chain reaction all the time and take a holistic approach to fixing it. Treatments might include gentle adjustments, stretches to open up the chest, and exercises to strengthen your back. But prevention is key: sit comfortably, keep your screen at eye level, and take regular breaks to stretch.

Personal,
Nothing lives for ever
Plants fit into three categories according to their life span and cycle, writes Tim Hoskins.
Annuals complete their entire life cycle in one year, biennials that germinate and grow in year one, then reproduce and die in year two and perennials, that live longer than two years, which is frustratingly vague and potentially misleading. A quick note, I used ‘reproduce’ instead of flower, because while 80% of the worlds plants do flower (known as angiosperms), 20% do not (known as gymnosperms) – think mosses, conifers, ferns etc.
To muddy the waters, some plants are sold as annuals in the UK, because our outdoor climate doesn’t suit them, but then they may be overwintered indoors or under mulch. Another note, some ‘annuals’
aren’t worth the effort, so while patting yourself on the back for overwintering your summer bedding don’t be disappointed that it’ll probably look leggy and awful.
The perennial tag is a bit misleading as it covers plants that live for anything from 3 years to 80,000 years. Not helpful. If you’re wondering, the oldest plant on earth is a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica).
When we look at ancient orchards in our countryside, remember that apple trees don’t really live past 100 and most are removed long before once they stop fruiting. Birch trees, so loved by designers only live to around 70.
Foxgloves, usually biennial, are sometimes sold as perennial, but 34 years is all you’ll get. Bromeliads that look stunning in flower when we buy them are at the
end of their 5ish year lifecycle and flowering indicates they’re dying.
They make great presents, but are literally impossible to keep alive.
Even peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii) will only go for about 5 years (though I have some 12 year old plants).
My point is that plants don’t live forever and we’d do well to remember that when they die for no obvious reason. Sometimes it’s just their time. We need to be realistic with our planning, critical of designed planting schemes and perhaps a bit kind to ourselves when things fall off their perch.

Probus Club visits the incinerator
If you drive southbound on the M5 from Tewkesbury and go past junction 12 you might notice on the left side of the motorway a very unusual large building with oddly shaped angular walls. This structure is what is known as the Javelin Park Energy from Waste Facility where over 90% of Gloucestershire’s domestic waste goes to be incinerated, rather than being dumped in landfill. Effectively it is a power station fuelled by rubbish. In February, Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club members visited Javelin Park to find out more about this green energy project and how it operates.
The facility is owned by Gloucestershire County Council and operated on their behalf by FCC Environment and we were welcomed by their Community Relationship Manager Melanie who took us through the history of the site and the process, illustrating her presentation with photographs, video and diagrams to prepare us for our tour of the facility.
Mel told us that the facility isn’t just a method of getting rid of waste by burning because the heat produced by the incineration goes into a huge boiler to produce steam to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 25,000 homes per year. Not only does it produce electricity but the residues left after the incineration produce over 30,000 tonnes of sustainable aggregates annually to be used in road construction and around 3,000 tonnes of metals are recovered per year.
After Mel’s presentation we then donned our
obligatory PPE and fully kitted out in helmets, hivis, eye protection and gloves, we set off on our exploration of the facility.
On our tour we were all impressed by the sheer enormity and complexity of this plant and appreciated the benefits it is providing to Gloucestershire in terms of producing green electricity
and avoiding using vast holes in the ground to dispense with our domestic waste.
Another excellent external visit for Probus Club members who finished off the event in fine style with a convivial lunch at a local hostelry.

Robinson’s Wartime Boatyard
The war time naval boat building in Tewkesbury has also sparked interest -and some controversy about what precisely was built here, writes John Dixon.
I was delighted, therefore, to be sent some photographs by Wendy Snarey which was inspired by a Rugby game conversation between her husband and the late Paul, and Mrs. Maggie, Cole.
THEN: Slipway with Healings’ former mill buildings in the background
He had benefited from the Echo closure of its office in Church Street and rescued these photographs and passed them onto the Snareys, knowing that they would make good historical use of them. Wendy also found an
article from 1945 which revealed censored details of the war work.
Bathurst’s is the boatbuilding name that survives, but it was taken over in 1940 by Leo Robinson of Lowestoft.
It benefitted from a government grant of £5,000 (today £345k) to build a factory with a slipway, the other side of King John’s Bridge, for the building of naval boats.
The firm brought with them workers of which two of the most famous were the Durrant Brothers (also popularising the Sea Cadets and Boys’ Brigade).
They continued boatbuilding after the warafter Robinson’s premature death in 1952 and the disappearance of Bathurst’s name’s after 1955.
We would like to celebrate accurately Tewkesbury’s Naval Contribution to the war effort. Can any enthusiasts please solve the riddle? If so please email: presidentths@gmail.com

This month’s article was inspired by Wendy Snarey. With thanks to Robin Brooks for his Echo article on 24th October 2015, entitled ‘Beating the Censor’ (forwarded to THS by Richard Chatham).
Next month we shall celebrate the purchase at auction of Bathurst Photographs of c 1900.

In 1870, Charles Buckle applied for a spirits licence for his beerhouse, the Aurora, at 39 Church Street. He said that he’d run the pub for twenty-five years with no complaints but his application was refused. This seems to be the only attempt made to elevate the Aurora from a beerhouse, and it remained as such for its whole life. Before it became a ‘tied house’ to Tewkesbury Brewery, then Arnold Perrett & Co., the landlord brewed the beer himself in a brewhouse down the alley beside the pub.
The Aurora was always a quiet and peaceful local pub, seldom in the news, and never for being badly run. There was a case of theft in 1869; William Smith, a fourteen-year-old lad, was sentenced to seven days in Gloucester gaol for stealing a half-pint pewter mug. It’s biggest brush with authority, though, was in 1910 when Arnold Perrett and Co, the owners, were instructed to remove the automatic flushing cistern they’d fitted to the gent’s urinal because the Council said that it wasted water and contravened their regulations. They complied without
THE AURORA BEER HOUSE
complaint.
The early history of the pub isn’t clear, but if it had first been licenced under the Beer-house Act of 1830, which seems likely, then its first landlord must have been William Whitehead, whose wife was reputed to be the last descendant of ‘the immortal Shakespeare’. Charles Buckle
ans, overseer of the poor and active member of the Liberal party. An inquiry into voting irregularities at the 1880 election suggested that the Aurora had been giving beer away to liberal supporters and ejecting known supporters of the Conservatives. He seems to have been a well-regarded advocate for social
followed in about 1845, then Alfred Mayell, who, like Buckle, had been a tailor. Heavily involved in the public life of the town, he was a long-time member of the workhouse Board of Guardi-
reform, when he wasn’t brewing and selling beer. Mayell was followed by Charles Joyner, who was landlord until 1898. His departure saw the end of stability. After him, landlords sel-
dom lasted even twelve months. Most notable, maybe, was Algernon Neale, who came to the Aurora from the Prince of Wales Hotel in Cheltenham, where he’d accrued debts of £243. These couldn’t be repaid from the Aurora profits, and he was declared bankrupt after nine months.
In 1913, John Jar-
vis arrived and steadied the ship. He was still landlord when the end came. This was in February 1917, when the magistrates, at the annual licencing meeting, decided to use the Compensation Act to take the licences away from nine beer-houses in the town centre, including the Aurora. The bureau-
cracy ran its course and it closed in 1918. Arnold Perrett were compensated with the relatively high sum of £790. John Jarvis received £10. The property was eventually sold, becoming Bert Gyngell’s Abbey Garage, which lasted there for twenty years. Nowadays, restored to splendour by the Abbey Lawn Trust, the old beerhouse is home to the Church Street Gift Shop.

Local Cricketers Turn Property Entrepreneurs, Offering Game-Changing Solutions for Landlords
Former elite cricketers and brothers, Dan and Myles have swapped sporting success for property innovation, bringing modern, high-yield rental solutions to landlords across Gloucestershire and Cornwall. With years of combined experience in property, finance, and high-performance sport, they are now leading the way in offering guaranteed rent and dynamic management services.
In recent years, Dan has been balancing a career in London’s financial sector with his cricketing ambitions, while his brother took his sporting talents to the USA. The duo has since transitioned into the property market. Now, they’re on a mission to help landlords maximise their returns with cutting-edge property strategies. Their business, operating across Cheltenham, Newquay, and now Tewkesbury, specialises in providing high-quality accommodation to guests. They have been fully occupied across all their properties in 2025 and are now working with landlords to help fulfil the strong demand they have. They offer both long-term guaranteed rental income and short-let management services, aiming to remove the hassle of traditional letting.
Tewkesbury, in particular, presents a prime opportunity for property owners, with the town undergoing rapid growth. The newly developed Cotswold Designer Outlet, significant housing expansions, and increasing visitor numbers make it an untapped market for serviced accommoda-
tion. Despite thousands of visitors each year, competition remains low, creating a lucrative window for landlords to capitalise on.
Dan and his brother know first-hand the challenges landlords face, having transformed their own family’s portfolio of single-let properties into high-performing assets. Now, they’re offering the same results to other property owners. With flexible solutions—including guaranteed rent
agreements and handsoff management services—their approach is designed to increase income while reducing stress.
“Our clients often tell us it costs them money not to work with us,” Dan explains. “Whether it’s securing consistent rental income or optimising property performance, we provide tailored solutions that work for landlords in the current market.”
As a family-run business with a landlord-first approach, the brothers are keen to support those looking to benefit from Tewkesbury’s growth. To explore how they can help, visit the Landlords section of their website or get in touch directly.

Fresh Standard Wins Gloucestershire Beer of the Festival in Blind Tasting
Woodchester-based husband-and-wife brewery, The Fresh Standard, is celebrating after their 2024 Anniversary Export Porter was awarded Gloucestershire Beer of the Festival in a blind tasting at this year’s Tewkesbury CAMRA Winter Ales Festival.
The festival, known for showcasing some of the finest winter beers in the region, saw a range of exceptional ales go head-to-head in a rigorous tasting process.
The Fresh Standard’s Anniversary Export Porter stood out for its bold flavours, rich malt character, and expertly balanced depth, securing it the top honour.
Head brewer and owner Richard Taylor shared his excitement about the recognition:
“Tewkesbury Winter Ales Festival is always the highlight of the year for us, and it’s particularly nice for them to recognise a beer of ours like this.”
Anthony Hill, Chair of Stroud CAMRA, also praised the win:
“On the Friday I was made aware that one of our breweries, The Fresh Standard Brew Co, may win an award. Moving to the judges table it became apparent that Fresh Standard had done far more than scooped an award but taken top spot beating off some real heavyweight competition from twelve other County brewers. We look forward to trying more Fresh Standard beers at local hostelries around Stroud and at the brewery Tap Room through 2025.”

Help your hound live a healthier, happier life
If your four-legged friend is anxious and reactive, or elderly and stiff, help is at hand.
Like us, our lovely dogs hold emotional stress and physical tension in their bodies, but unlike us, they can’t tell anyone. Over time tension builds up, causing discomfort or even pain and in older dogs restricts their mobility.
The tension is held in their neuro-fascia – the connective tissue – making it ‘stuck’ and sore. As fascia is an integral part of their nervous system it also affects their behaviour. Dogs with fascia tension may be anxious or anti-social and fearful of life.
Older dogs are often lethargic, reluctant to exercise and play or get on the sofa or in the car. They may also be labelled ‘old and grumpy’. Dogs with arthritis often suffer with fascia tension.
Winchcombe-based Ruth McDonagh of A Calmer Canine is a Practitioner of Whole Energy Body Balance (WEBB), a type of dog massage that focuses on the neuro-fascia. She works with your dog to find and gently release tension.
Ruth is Gloucestershire’s only WEBB Practitioner. She said:
“WEBB is a wonderful, holistic therapy that can have a huge impact on your dog’s health and happiness. In anxious dogs it helps calm their nervous systems, lessening their fears. For older dogs it brings improved mobility and a
renewed love of life.” WEBB sessions last an hour, cost £40 and take place in Winchcombe.
NB: WEBB is not an alternative to veterinary care. Always consult your vet if your dog is unwell or lame.

This is also a particularly easy route to follow and is suitable for all abilities. It can be started from either Lower or Upper Slaughter, but this route sets off from Upper Slaughter, where there is some parking in the little square near the church.
Walk up to the lane to the right of St Peter’s, passing the old school on your left, descend to the ford, cross over the bridge (1) and turn right.
Follow the lane until in meets a road, (2) and bear right for a short distance, looking for a waymarked footpath on your left (3)
Go down the path, which runs along the gardens of the Lords of the Manor Hotel.
This hotel was once the village rectory, and was the home of the Reverend Francis E. Witts, whose diaries (1820-1854) give a fascinating insight into Cotswold Life in the 19th century. Copies of hisbooks are sometimes available in St Peter’s Church.
At the bottom of the path cross over the footbridge, and follow the Warden’s Way footpath to the right (4) traversing a field to reach the
more famous village of Lower Slaughter (5) The River Eye is to your right.
On reaching Mill Lane in Lower Slaughter, walk ahead and slightly right into Malthouse Lane (6) which winds between cottages to reach a triangular green with the old well at its centre, on the banks of the river.
Bear left and walk to the road bridge. Cross over the bridge, and bear right to follow the river bank with the village hall to your left (7). The Slaughters Country Inn is near the end of the bridge.
The view to your right is one of the most photographed in the Cotswolds. Just past the road junction on the left, cross the footbridge and
DANCING FOR EVERYONE
The HE4T was founded by Holly Courtney-Ward, a proud Tewkesbury local, in the wake of lockdown. Holly has always been passionate about music and dance, performing with various companies throughout her life - most notably as a dedicated member of Mystique Twirlers, where she competed for England in the NBTA World Championships.
As an adult, Holly noticed a lack of opportunities for her and her friends to continue dancing. With no grand expectations, she started an adult dance class just for fun. Fast forward to today, and The HE4T has flourished into a vibrant community of 200 dancers, offering ten public classes each week!
“At The HE4T, we believe dance should be inclusive-regardless of experience, ability, age, or size,” said Holly.
“If there isn’t a class that fits, Holly will find a way to create one! Our classes are fun, supportive, and welcoming, fostering friendships that extend beyond the dance floor. No matter where you’re at in your dance journey, there’s always a place for you here.”
In just four years, The HE4T have performed at local events like Tewkesbury Live, volunteered choreography for the Twyning Village Pantomime and hosted a sell-out first showcase at The Roses
Theatre. They have danced with Britain’s Got Talent stars, Diversity!
“These experiences have enriched our members’ lives, and we’re excited for what’s next,” Holly commented.
“In May 2025, we’ll be back at The Roses Theatre for our second showcase, bigger and better than ever! With incredible local business sponsorsProCare Services, Mary P’s Day Nursery, and Blow Hair Salon. This event promises an unforgettable evening of dance, music and entertainment.
“If you are interested in dancing with us? We’re expanding in May to meet demand, so get in touch to join our waiting list.”
