by Andrew Miller Paperback £10.99
This review fits December so well as it is set around the freezing cold of Christmas 1963. Andrew Miller excels at conveying to his reader not only the time setting but also the bleakness of the winter so this is a very good book to read sitting in front of the fire. The author is one of those lesser known popular writers who over the years has been selected by many of our customers and has a faithful following which "The Land in Winter" should enhance especially with a Booker prize shortlist endorsement.
The book starts in an asylum with the sad suicide of an incumbent, but this chapter is just an opening before branching out to introduce the main characters; two couples, near neighbours in the rural snow bound West Country.
Dr Eric Parry is one of the local GPs, his wife Irene, pregnant with their first child finds herself isolated in the countryside far away from the social London life she was used to. Bill Simmons, a would be farmer, but with some modernising ideas, is newly established in a neighbouring farm across the fields with his wife Rita.
Rita herself has been also uplifted to rural life so different from her past as a dancer in a Birmingham nightclub. Her personality and characterisation add a lot to this book; a great invention.
Eric also has Birmingham roots but has moved up in society. Bill, the son of a London landlord, with a dubious past, has inherited some

wealth but is unsure what he wants out of life and is very much a novice farmer. So the four main principle characters have very defined backgrounds across the classes, but the two wives become close friends,
The Parrys hold a Christmas party where Irene's London literary friends mix with Rita and Bill. Eric's GP partner, an emigre, is amongst the local guests; as is Eric's lover with whom he has been betraying his wife, leaving Irene confused by her husband's detached attitude towards her.
The weather isolates the village community whilst the wider country grinds to a frozen halt.
Throughout the book there is an aura of postwar Britain, rationing is over, but the country is far removed from what it is nowadays and the author conveys this brilliantly as his plot unwinds to provide the reader with a chilly entertaining read, enhanced by a broad mix of character; good, bad and indifferent, with the countryside encased in crippling snowdrifts.
Enjoy this winter read, an excellent choice for the Christmas tree book from Santa. Selected by:

National Star provides education, care and support for young adults with complex needs.
It has facilities in Cheltenham, Hereford, Worcester and Wales.
“Our shops play a critical role in raising money for National Star. The charity has not received government funding for capital development projects for more than a decade,” says Lynette Barrett, Chief Executive Officer for National Star.
“It is thanks to the generous support of the community that we are able to fund our specialist facilities and provide those experiences that are life-changing to young people with disabilities.”
The new shop is open seven days a week and has a drop-off area directly outside for donations.
It welcomes donations of books, vinyls, toys, homeware and clothing.
This will be National Star’s eighth charity shop. The site was chosen because its space will enable young people with disabilities to gain
work experience.
“The Tewkesbury shop has four times more space than our current shops so will very much be a superstore for the charity.

More importantly that additional space means we can provide additional learning for young people as they prepare for adulthood,” says Lynette.
As the space is critical for young people who use wheelchairs, the charity cannot accept do nations of furniture.
“We are no strangers to Tewkesbury as we have had students working in the café at Tewkesbury Abbey. We have received such a warm welcome so far from the community and we look forward to being
even more involved in the town.”
The charity is also appealing for volunteers to support the shop.
“Your support, whether it a few hours a week of
your time or donations of goods will support young adults from Gloucestershire and beyond,” says Lynette. “That support can be life-changing.”

Mystique Twirlers of Tewkesbury are inviting the community to join them for a festive celebration at their upcoming Christmas Fayre, on Saturday 6 December from 10am–2pm at The Watson Hall. The event promises seasonal cheer, family fun, and a chance to support one of Tewkesbury’s most inspiring youth groups.
Originally founded in 1996 by the late Angela Walker—a beloved local champion of community
and youth—Mystique Twirlers built a legacy of excellence, performing at local events and com-

peting at national and international championships. After a hiatus, the team was proudly relaunched this January by a group of former twirlers, including Angela’s daughter, Sarah Boden.
In just a few short months, Mystique has returned to the competitive stage with remarkable success. At the National Association of Majorettes England’s National Championships, the team scooped multiple trophies, including first place for their peewee pom team and two national champions in individual events.

But Mystique is more than medals. It’s a twirling family that nurtures confidence, discipline, and resilience. Members learn to dance, march, and twirl—but also how to support one another, handle defeat with grace, and celebrate each other’s wins. The group offers a safe, active space that supports mental wellbeing and builds character.

The Christmas Fayre will feature stalls, refreshments, games, and performances from Mystique Twirlers and Amy Bastin’s talented dance group, adding
extra sparkle to the day. Santa’s grotto will be open for magical visits, making it a perfect outing for all. Funds raised will go toward costumes for the 2026 competition season, helping ensure every member can shine on the national stage. Mystique Twirlers are also seeking sponsorship from local businesses who share their passion for youth development and community spirit. Sponsors will be proudly acknowledged at every opportunity and across the team’s social media platforms. Come along, celebrate the season, and support a team that’s twirling its way back into Tewkesbury’s heart.

This year Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members once again supported their own member Will Fish who is also the Deputy Poppy Appeal organiser for the Royal British Legion in Tewkesbury and ran the Poppy Appeal stand for the day at Dobbies Garden Centre Tewkesbury on Saturday 1st November. Between them they were pleased to have raised over £1,200 which is more than double their total raised last year. Head of Unit Nic Price said “We were pleased to again assist the Royal British Legion and support this year’s poppy appeal”.
On Remembrance Sunday the Unit took part in the Parade through the Town and attended the Service at Tewkesbury Abbey. Following this, wreaths were laid at the War Memorial (including one from Severn Unit) after an outdoor service and 2 minute silence at 11.00 a.m. Head of Unit Nic Price said “This is always a very poignant and moving occasion and this year’s parade was very well attended and the streets were packed with onlookers.”

As we head into the season of kindness and giving, it’s clear that Tewkesbury doesn’t wait for December to show its generosity. Over the past month, I’ve been completely blown away by how many people have reached out to support our local digital support - showing that in Tewkesbury, compassion travels faster than the Wi-Fi!
One of the trickiest parts of my role is when someone comes to me eager to learn or stay connected, but they don’t have the right device - or any device at all. In theory, my work would screech to a halt there…but not in Tewkesbury! Around here, when things stall, the community always finds a way to keep things moving forward.
When Mythe Medical Centre kindly offered to be a drop-off point for Digital Donations, we hoped a few old phones might trickle in, perhaps a wire or two. Instead, we were met with a tid-
al wave of generosity.
Within twelve hours, the first donation had arrived - and within three

days, the surgery team could hardly reach their desks!
In just a few weeks,
the people of Tewkesbury donated 44 phones, 11 tablets, 16 computers/laptops, 5 printers, more cables, keyboards, monitors than we could count, and enough mice to recreate “Ratatouille”! Every one of those items will help someone in our community connect to loved ones, to services, and to opportunities.
Our digital support work only succeeds because you make it possible. From cupboard clutter to community connection - thank you, Tewkesbury, for proving once again that technology is about people, not just devices.
If you would like information on getting free digital support or when your nearest digital drop-in is, please call 07454 066116 or email digital@grcc.org.uk.

Local car buyer, Shaun Taylor, has an enviable reputation in the Tewkesbury area, for buying cars, his numerous, glowing testimonials from satisfied customers reliably acknowledge the friendly reliable service he offers.
Customers can call Shaun anytime to discuss a potential sale, he is always happy to visit, appraise the vehicle and offer a firm price, then, if that is acceptable, he will settle
immediately into a bank account, process the administration and take the vehicle away, there and then.
Shaun says, “I have been buying for so many

as easy and transparent as possible for owners and I think they speak for me, and I am happy to share many of the testimonials I have received with potential customers, but these are just a few.”

Selling a much loved car is not easy, we could not be more delighted by our experience of working with Shaun Taylor - he was amazing! From the first contact, Shaun was responsive, friendly and straightforward. Communication was brilliant and the sale of my MX-5 proved to be incredibly straightforward too. Customers of The Fox & Hounds pub/restaurant in Bredon are saddened by its temporary closure due to a fire.
This means that the usual monthly live jazz event has had to find a new host. This is particularly important for the December 3rd gig as the organisers are excited to have booked a return visit by internationally acclaimed pianist Dave Newton.
So they're pleased to announce that the delightful Tewkesbury landmark, The Gupshill Manor has come to the rescue as the new venue.
Dave Newton has been voted Best British
Jazz Pianist in the annual awards no less than sixteen separate years, so it's an especial treat to have him back in Tewkesbury.
He'll be here on Wednesday 3rd December, accompanied by the hugely experienced bassist Clive Morton and drummer Roger Powell, with lyrical vocalist Penny Powell.
The music starts at 7.30pm and admission is free, with a raffle.

Lit by the warm glow of flaming torches and accompanied by a musical fanfare of medieval instruments and drums, the Mediaeval Baebes’ procession will magically wend its way towards Tewkesbury Abbey on Wednesday 10th December.
Commencing at 18.50pm from the Touching Souls Statue, step into a world of enchantment. The pageantry will commence with a lighting of the chalice ceremony, symbolically ‘awakening the flame of old’ as described in the torchlit inspired lyrics of the new Christmas song ‘December.’
Dressed in flowing gowns and carrying the flickering flames to guide the way, families, musicians and reenactors are invited to join the Mediaeval Baebes. Dress up. Hold a lantern aloft. Beat a drum to accompany the sounds. Be part of the living tapestry of joyful melodic pageantry. Or, just experience the spectacle as it passes by, before culminating at the entrance to the beautiful, historic abbey.
Renowned for their soaring harmonies, stunning costumes, and performing with a plethora of exotic historical instruments; the Mediaeval Baebes will honour the twelfth month as they celebrate the beauty and passion of all things mydwynter.
Exalting the true spirit of Christmas, this evening of music, theatre and dance will showcase well-known Christmas carols and traditional folk songs. Captivating storytelling will reveal the folklore and meanings woven into the lyrics, alongside ethereal choral settings of ancient and romantic poetry. In addition, the magic and mystery of the season will be entwined with tracks from the forthcoming album ‘The Spinning Wheel.’
The Spinning Wheel, marks three decades of enchanting performances and traces the turning of the year, from January’s renewal through the fires of May to autumn’s

winds and the ceremonies of mydwynter. The album is available for pre-order, accompanied by an exclusive download of the song ‘October,’ ahead of its official release in February 2026.
In celebration of the Mediaeval Baebes’ 30th Anniversary, a special 2026 Calendar is now on sale. The new Christmas single ‘December,’ featuring ‘January’ as the B side, is due for release mid-November.
The Mediaeval Baebes are one of the most successful female-led, early music and folk ensembles in Europe. They have released eleven studio albums and won an Ivor Novella Award for their performance on the BBC serialization ‘The Virgin Queen.’ They received two Emmy nominations and a Royal Television Society award as the featured artist alongside composer Martin Phipps, for the TV theme tune of ITV’s hit show ‘Victoria.’
Collaborating on Orbital’s ‘Ringa Ringa’ in 2023 led to number 6 status in the album charts; and in the same year, their unique siren call joined The Wellermen, as part of their ‘Explorations’ remix album.
Step into a world of wonder and be immersed in glorious merriment.
Concert tickets are now available from www.me-

diaevalbaebes.com at a cost of £32.50 each and £15.00 for a child.

At Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club we have had many talks on subjects on which the speakers have done a great deal of research to produce very interesting and fact-based presentations. So it is unusual to have a speaker who has first-hand knowledge and experience about a subject and hence it was great to welcome former Concorde pilot Captain John Hutchinson who came to us three times over recent weeks to give us the benefit of his long and personal association with the iconic supersonic passenger aircraft.

John’s first talk was a generic introduction to the history and development of Concorde in the 1960’s and how a joint venture between the then British Aircraft Corporation and Sud-Aviation of France was created to design, build and bring the aircraft into commercial service. John described how the designers and engineers from both companies worked together to create this unique and beautiful aircraft.
In introducing his second talk John said that he did not really like giving this talk as it concerned loss of life and the destruction of a Concorde aircraft. John gave us a detailed analysis of the Air France crash at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris 2000 which killed 113 people and nearly killed the then French President Jacques Chirac, was a passenger in another plane which was almost impacted by the stricken Concorde whilst waiting on a taxiway. John described

the accident as resulting from a number of external issues and errors of judgement by the French captain and crew which taken together resulted in the aircraft catching fire, getting airborne but then crashing into an airport hotel.
John’s final talk was a description of some of the personalities he had met whilst flying Concorde including members of the Royal family, leading business people, pop stars and politicians. In
contrast to today’s high security procedures on passenger aircraft, in those days John welcomed many of them on to the flight deck to witness supersonic flight with a pilot’s eye view. These were three wonderful talks which totally captivated Probus members on each occasion.

Elizabeth Wyatt House, in Barton Road is the home of the Tewkesbury Old People’s Welfare Committee and the Golden Hour Club, both founded by Elizabeth Wyatt in the 1940s to meet a pressing social need. Circumstances and needs have changed considerably in the last eighty years, and the charity is going through a major re-boot.
Things like regular lunches and coach trips are no longer needed. The Golden Hour Club, though, continues to put on events like its fortnightly bingo sessions. The main use of the hall nowadays is for painting the medieval street banners, which takes place on Monday afternoons (new volunteers are welcome!).

Both the future purpose of the Welfare Committee and the potential use of the hall were discussed at a well-attended meeting of interested groups in early September and from this a ‘transition group’ was formed to consider the
future direction of the charity and the potential of the hall as a community asset. Since then, things have been moving apace. The update of the charity has been agreed to make it compatible with today’s requirements. The purpose will be the same. The building’s name will soon appear outside as “Elizabeth Wyatt Hall” to better describe what it is; a hall for community use. A survey of the building is well under way, and a lot of tidying up has been done. The next step will be to agree a programme for improvements, and find
the funds to carry them out!
The hall is a little dated at the moment, but perfect for a whole range of uses. If you’re look-
ing for a venue for an afternoon or for a regular event, then contact us on elizabethwyatthousehall@gmail.com.

SweetPea’s K9 ScentWork School wants to welcome you to the fascinating world of scent work for pet dogs. This fairly new sport and hobby for pet owners taps into a dog’s most powerful sense – their extraordinary sense of smell.
So what is scent work?
In a nutshell, it involves hiding a specific scent and the owner guiding their dog to find the scent article using their nose and then indicating to their owner they have found it.

Benefits of scent work include:
Releases dopamine: Sniffing releases dopamine, a hormone that makes dogs feel good. Of course, a happy dog equals a happy owner. This is very beneficially for shy, anxious and even reactive dogs, our scentwork school can help build their confidence.
Suitable for all dogs: Scent work can be done with any breed of dog, including puppies and senior dogs. Our current oldest dog is 13 years old and our youngest is 6 months!
Mental stimulation: Scent work provides mental stimulation and low impact physical activity for dogs. This means dogs recovering from surgery, ones on restricted exercise or our golden oldies with mobility problems can also take part.
Reinforce and strengthen owner and dog’s bond. We believe scent work is a partnership between the dog and their owner. The owner must learn to read their dogs body language and how the dog communicates with them whilst working. Its fascinating to watch the dogs learn to search and use their brains, working out what the owners are asking them to do.
The fun part of scentwork and our courses is reenacting scenarios that professional working dogs do for our pet dogs. This includes vehicle searches, out buildings, bag searches like at the airport and so much more!
We also run time trials, so dogs are against the clock to find a set number of scent articles. Warning! It can become quite competitive.
Our Veterinary nurse Lucy is a UK Sniffer Dog instructor and has been teaching classes for the last 3 years. We offer 6 week courses, introductory workshops, 1-2-1’s and improver sessions too!

DISTANCE: Just under 4 miles, flat. Can be quite muddy in parts, especially after rain (or snow!)
CAR PARKING: with respect to residents, in the centre of Kemerton village.
REFRESHMENTS: The Crown Inn, and the Old Post Office, Kemerton. Check opening times.
MAP: not to scale. OS Sheet 190 recommended.

One of the great attractions of Bredon Hill is the charming variety of villages which surround it, writes Jack. B. Walker. This month’s ramble (ideal for winter weather) gives an opportunity to visit three quite different places, each with a unique character.
Starting from the war memorial in the centre of Kemerton village, walk down the lane towards church and at the crossroads, turn left. You will pass some farm buildings, and at the end of the tarmac road take the path through the trees.
At the bottom of the slope, turn left just before the stream and go through a five bar gate into a field (1)
Follow the path right across the field to a farm gate, go through and take the same line to cross a footbridge in the next field. (2)
Keep ahead and go over a stile, then yet another plank bridge and two more stiles to reach the lower grounds of Overbury Estate (3). Overbury Court is visible away to your left. Go diagonally across the field towards the agricultural buildings in the Estate Yard. Go through a kissing gate and follow the yellow way markers, passing some garages and up a slope past a wood store. At the end of the fence, turn left (4) up a track, passing some barns on the left, and

into Overbury village.
On meeting the road (5) turn left, and walk past the Church and a high stone wall. Cross to the right hand side of the road as you walk out of the village, and look for a metal gate on your right (6). Go through the gate and follow the arrows across the field to another small gate. Pass through it and walk ahead, keeping the hedge to your right. Eventually you will meet a lane coming up from Kemerton (7). Walk straight ahead down a lane, passing a farm on your right. At the next junction keep
straight ahead into Baylis Road, and look for a path in front of you, leading between some houses into a field (8) . The path bears right, then left, to skirt the right hand side of the field. Keep on this path, go through a gap in a hedge and keep the same line, eventually emerging on to the road in Westmancote (9) Turn left and walk down through the village, until you reach a three way junction. Bear right along the road towards Bredon for a short distance, then cross opposite the bus shelter (10) and take a narrow path into some
trees at the side of a bungalow.
Keep following this path until you emerge through a small gate, cross a small plantation and meet a broader track (11). Turn right along this track, then left along another wide path with hedges either side. (12) When you reach the road (13) turn right, then take the next road on the left back into Kemerton village (14)
This is Back Lane, which wends its way gently upwards, with some fine old buildings along the way.
After passing the black and white Old Manor, and then Kemerton Court, look for a triangle of green with an attractive Georgian House set back to the right. (15). Take the footpath which passes between a cottage and Upper Court’s gardens (to the left), down to a small lake
Keep the lake to your right, and at the end of the bank go along the path into the trees, then turn left over a footbridge to return to point (1) and back to the car.

GARDENING MONTHLY - with Tim Hoskins

Garden trends for 2026 are shaping up to be delightfully eccentric - proof that the modern gardener is both endlessly creative and only marginally deterred by reality, writes Tim Hoskins.
First up: bento box gardening. Think of it as lunchbox logic applied to landscaping.
Instead of large, sprawling beds, gardeners divide small spaces into neat, grid-like compartments - each section hosting a distinct microtheme: a tuft of ornamental grass here, a doll-sized herb patch there, and perhaps a lone dwarf sunflower standing proudly like a garnish.
I’m not convinced it’ll be a long term trend, but I quite like the idea of having efficient spaces with no passengers. Colour palettes are shifting too, trending decisively darker.
Deep burgundies, smoky purples, nearblack foliage-gardens are going gothic.
It’s dramatic, moody, and perfect for anyone who wants their hydrangeas to match their existential dread.
Given the increasingly dramatic weather, climate resilience is no longer a trend but a survival skill.
Drought-tolerant Mediterranean herbs, heat-stoic natives, and plants that can survive both sudden deluges and surprise frosts are the horticultural equivalent of a well-stocked emer-

gency kit. Flexible gardeners are trialling species that can cheerfully withstand conditions normally found on Mars. Hope springs eternal; so do tough perennials.
On the furniture front, uniform patio sets are out. Eclectic outdoor furniture is the new status symbol: a vintage rattan chair beside a sleek metal lounger, a salvaged café table paired with a brightly painted stump someone insists is “functional art.”
The aim is a collectedover-time look, ideally without the reality of having raided a skip at midnight.
And finally, AI is moving into the garden, and not just to judge you. Smart lighting systems shift colour temperature through the evening for maximum
ambience (and minimum tripping hazards).
AI-powered irrigation plans water schedules based on microclimate data, plant species, and your remarkable ability to forget you own plants at all.
In 2026, the garden may become a curated, tech-infused, slightly unruly reflection of its

owner, offering proof that even in a changing world, we can still grow beauty, resilience, and the occasional crooked tomato.

Tewkesbury Museum end their Autumn talks programme Tuesday 9th December with a seasonal look at the Christmas tradition of Mumming, which is alive and well in the town.
The Tewkesbury Mummers will look at the history and mysteries of folk plays, particularly in Gloucestershire and will conclude with a lively performance of their own version of the dramatic story of St George and his various foes.
The performance of folk plays in Tewkesbury has an illustrious past. In 1599 the churchwardens used plays with local players to raise funds to add battlements to the Abbey tower. They owned, among other things, 5 gowns, 4 beards and 2 heads for use in their

annual plays. More secular mumming, though, was a means by which peasants earned a little Christmas cheer by entertaining the gentry. There were many and varied names for
the play around the country, but the plots are remarkably similar. All talks take place on Tuesdays, starting 7 PM, at Tewkesbury Baptist Church, Station Road, Tewkesbury.
Entry £4 (cash or card) to include tea/coffee & cake. All profits go to support Tewkesbury Museum.
All welcome.

What makes you feel Christmassy? Is it hearing the first Christmas song? Watching your favourite Christmas film? ecoraons, lights, or the tree being put up? The first airing of the John Lewis Christmas ad or going to a carol service? Opening presents or eang way too much food? Whatever it is, there seems to be quite a lot of pressure on feeling ‘Christmassy’.
It’s a magical me of year, but can also be stressful. There’s so much to be done!
Perhaps feeling Christmassy isn’t about those things at all. M aybe it’s about the unexpected things that happen, the unplanned moments. Times where someone helps us out, an old friend drops by, or just being with family. Perhaps the who is really more important than the what, when it comes to feeling Christmassy.
We know this to be true. When remembering loved ones who’ve died, it’s them that we miss, not the presents they bought. Or when people are alone at Christmas, feeling Christmassy for them, may just be an invitaon to be with others.
Looking back to that first Christmas, they wouldn’t have known what being Christmassy was. Feeling Christmassy for them, was having no room, the sound and smells of animals and the pain of childbirth. Yet, right there in that first Christmas, was the making of all Christmases to come. Family together, outsiders being welcomed in and of course, special gis.
Here in the noisy stable the Prince of Peace was being born, the one whose inclusive love would bring all kinds of people to G od.
So may you have those special Christmassy moments this year, wi th the people you love and perhaps the strangers you include. May you get the gis you want and give the gis others need, and may you experience the deep joy and hope of Jesus the Prince of Peace.

November - season of mists and AGM fruitfulness. What larks - even the Committee elections were fun, as Esme insisted that all candidates individually did a hands-free sit-to-stand ... WI keeps you fit! And we stood for our once-a-year rendering of our WI anthem. We re-elected Julie as our President+, and we listened with appreciation to all the official reports for the year from President, Secretary, Treasurer, Knit&Natter, Crafts, Book Club, Raffle, and Competitions. This month’s comp was Best Childhood Photo, won by Jean S for her gardening toddler.
Julie reviewed all the lovely events this past year [see previous issues of Tewkesbury Direct], and there were lots of the Committee and members to thank, for their various sterling efforts and kindnesses, as always making our WI a great pleasure to attend.
On display were several fascinating archive scrap books, which will
soon be stored with the local WI Federation in Gloucester. Our plans include the local branches’ Carol Service at St Nicholas’ Church in Ashchurch, organised by us this year, with baby hand-made Xmas trees and mince pies; there will be a retiring collection for the church and for Alderman Knight School. December will be our Festive Party with a lady singer - and the grand opportunity to wear our tackiest Xmas jumpers - and the next day a visit by train to Worcester to visit the Cathedral with its huge display of Xmas trees, the Commandery, and other spots of note [including lunch, of course ... ]. We look forward to
our Winter meal in January, at Teddington, and launch into the New Year with another packed programme of events.
The AGM afternoon was rounded off with a couple of mind-twisting quizzes, on Howwell-do-you-knowyour-proverbs? and Can-you-guess-the-treefrom-this-clue? No, noone got full marks, but it was fun trying.
Next meeting, as usual, is the second Wednesday of the month, 2pm at the Wheatpieces Community Centre. If you fancy joining us, you could ring Julie on 01684 301267 or email PullenJ53@Sky.com - and bring your own mug to enjoy our tea/coffee and biscuits.

The Oddfellows Arms doesn’t seem to have existed before about 1880. Local pub historian Bryan Linnell suggests that it may have previously been called the Turks Head, one of those shadowy beer house names which once resided on the High Street. The link may be tenuous, but in 1868 a coach builder called Samuel Woodward, employed by Thomas Sharp, who had his workshop at
101 High Street (now demolished and the site of Domino Pizza) which is a stone’s throw from the Oddfellows, at 110 (now Parson’s Bakery). This is hardly conclusive, but a reasonable supposition.
The Oddfellows Arms was a common name in the nineteenth century, making a link to the Friendly Society which had grown in the north to take on some of the supporting roles for members who had fallen on hard times which the old trade guilds used to provide. There was never a Lodge based there, though.
It was a tied house from an early date, the owners being the Gardner and Branch Brewery of Gloucester, and then the Crown Brewery. In 1897 Ind Coope took it over, and quickly upset the local magistrates by announcing plans for expansion. They had bought the old toy shop next door and proposed to incorporate it into the premises. There was a long argument about the need for a new licence for the new space, and eventually they agreed to submit one. There were a lot of objections. 45 neighbours opposed the plans, pointing out that

there were already 14 licenced premises within 150 yards.
Eventually the Magistrates agreed to the plans on condition that there should be no doors onto Eagles Alley, which was alongside the enlarged pub, but they could have a back door, which had to be kept locked during opening hours. Work went ahead, to demolish both buildings and replace them with what is there today, the rather attractive frontage with orange glazed tiles on the ground floor. Maybe the signs in Eagles Alley about committing nuisance and Ancient Lights stem from this rebuilding? Originally, the entrance was through the door on the left, the Oddfellows Passage, but changes since it closed have created a new shop front and door.
Among the pub’s landlords, William Taylor stands out. A native of Beckford, he arrived in 1917, aged 60, having spent much of his life in the Army. A veteran of the Zulu Wars he volunteered for active service in 1914 but was declared unfit in 1916. He remained landlord until 1934 when he retired to Jeynes Row, dying in 1937.
Surprisingly, after the alterations the Oddfellows remained a beer house and wasn’t given
a full wine and spirits licence until 1953, when Landlady Alice Evans successfully applied. In 1954 it was one of seven pubs which were granted permanent extensions for market days, so it must have had a farming clientele.
It seems to have been a quiet and ‘respectable’ establishment for most of its life. There was the odd eruption, as in 1912
when Thomas Burton assaulted Councillor Smith (fined £1) and the very occasional infringement of licencing regulations. This seems to have changed in the 1960s, and the pub closed forever in 1971, apparently under pressure from above as a consequence of unruly behaviour. Only the glazed tiles remain as a reminder. By Steve Goodchild.

Seren’s Wish is a registered charity based in Tewkesbury and Bishops Cleeve, dedicated to supporting children and families facing poverty and social inequality. What began as a small initiative providing Christmas gifts has grown into a year-round movement, ensuring that children who might otherwise go without still experience joy, belonging, and hope.
Our mission is simple but powerful: “When you wish upon a star; dreams come true.” Every project we deliver is rooted in that belief, from distributing essentials to families in need, to creating magical community events that bring people together.
Seren’s Fest – Music, Magic & Meaning
Our flagship fundraiser, Seren’s Fest, takes place for the very first time on Saturday 2nd May 2026 at Cheltenham Tigers RFC. This inaugural all-day celebration of music, food, and family fun will raise vital funds to continue our work across Tewkesbury, Cheltenham, and beyond. Every

ticket sold and every song sung helps us turn wishes into action for local children.
World Record Attempt
– Halloween 2025
In 2025, Seren’s Wish led an exciting world record attempt, bringing together the community in a bold challenge to put Tewkesbury on the map. The official count took place at Tewkesbury Space Storage on Halloween night, October 31st, marking the culmination of months of planning and hard work. Hundreds of local people, schools, and community groups joined forces, capturing the spirit of our charity: community, creativity, and collective impact. How You Can Get Involved

Seren’s Wish is more than a festival – it’s a year-round commitment to supporting children and families across Tewkesbury, Bishops Cleeve, and beyond. From providing essentials and seasonal gifts, to creating opportunities for joy and belonging, every project we deliver is powered by community support. There are lots of ways

you can be part of our story:

The Roses Theatre is welcoming back its annual pantomime this festive season – and the creative team promise that old favourites will sit by side with new talent and all-action twists!
Jack and the Beanstalk will take over The Roses from November 29 to January 3, with morning, matinee and evening performances to suit every schedule. And the watchword for this year’s production is action, say the team behind the production.
“We really wanted this year’s panto to be packed with thrills,” says The Roses’ former Director, Jess Brewster. Having left her post on September 1st, Jess is staying on as director of Jack and the Beanstalk, making it her fond farewell to the theatre she has led for five years. She is keen to go with a bang.
“From astonishing sets to big song-anddance numbers and that huge beanstalk, there will be so much happening on-stage,” she promises. “Our Jack is even a trained tumbler, so he’ll be leaping, jumping, and climbing all over the place throughout! You’ve never seen such an energetic panto!”
“Return to the Roses!”
The Roses’ annual family pantomime, sponsored this year by Cotteswold Dairy, has proven to be a bright spot in Gloucestershire’s theatre calendar. Last year’s production, Cinderella, proved to be the best-selling seasonal show in the theatre’s fifty-year history – and this year looks set to be bigger still.
Last year’s production saw Love Island star Megan Forte Clarke, fresh from drama school, tread Tewkesbury’s boards – just before her appearance in the 2025 run of the hit ITV series. Audiences will be treated to new stars of tomorrow this year, too, including Italia Conti graduate Dylan Duffield (Casualty, Elf: The Musical) as Jack himself.
Old favourites return this year, too, with a big role for the break-out star of Cinderella, the professional drag queen Bonnie Banks – her knock-out voice will be returning to the Roses for 2025. “I can’t wait to return to The Roses,” says Bonnie. “Last year’s panto got audiences on their feet, and this year’s is even better.” Abena AdomTha also returns as the switched-on and savvy Jill, and Michael Neri as the lovable clown Silly Simon.
“Exciting, Energetic, and Different”
As well as its action, Jack and the Beanstalk

will also feature a number of other twists that make it a thoroughly modern panto. The youngsters taking part in the production’s chorus have been selected via X-Factor-style auditions, and the audience interaction is definitely Instagram-ready. The production’s writer, Charlotte Swarbrick, explains: “This panto doesn’t just take place on the stage: it comes right out to the audience!”
The story itself – written by returning scribe Charlotte Swarbrick, who also stars as Fairy Rose – has fun with current events, too: not only is the weather causing mayhem in Tewkesbury, but a Donald Trump-esque mayor (András Gönczöl, returning to The Roses after his turn as Buttons last year) isn’t exactly helping! There will be plenty of laughs for audience members of every age.
Following its sold-out run last year, there will also be an Adults-Only version of the pantomime on select dates throughout the festive season. This near-the-knuckle reimagining of the beloved seasonal show will feature all kinds of racy high-jinx for audiences with a few more years –and maybe a few more cocktails! – on the clock.
The Roses’ new Director and CEO, Derek Bond, says the annual pantomime is a key moment of the year for both theatre and audiences. “A theatre’s festive show is a fantastic opportunity to have fun with – and offer our thanks to! – our loyal audiences, but also throw the door open to people who’ve never been to a show before.
“Everyone loves a pantomime, and this year
The Roses’ offering really is something exciting, energetic, and different. People will be talking about it for years to come – so don’t be left saying ‘OH NO YOU DIDN’T!’ to

Much loved, young Twyning resident Luke Joseph, lost his long and courageous battle to an extremely rare, complex, painful and incurable brain disease in May. Luke spent an incredible 10 months on Ward 6a, GRH in his final year of life where he received outstanding care from: paramedics, Dan and Tom; air ambulance, all
Luke spent his very last Christmas (and many other Christmases in Birmingham Children’s Hospital) on Ward

staff and ward Doctors , the exceptional care of Dr Emma Husbands, palliative care GRH and also Prof. S Sisodiya at University College Hospital, London.
In Luke’s memory Luke’s mum Liz and brother Oscar have set up their own collection ‘Luke’s Luxuries’. These little bags of toiletries, mints/ chocolates and a hug in a bear are to offer reassurance and comfort to the many patients that arrive on the wards with nothing, including the elderly and vulnerable that live alone and have no local friends or fami-
6a where Liz and Oscar noted the stark contrast between adult wards and childrens wards on Christmas Day and over the festive period. Through no fault of the staff; Christmas Day for many patients was just another long, boring and lonely day.
They set themselves a challenge to distribute as many ‘Luke’s Luxuries’ as possible to all patients on Tower Block wards and to 22 patients in Tewkesbury Hospital on the 23rd December, by Santa!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of

Twyning resident Julie and Tewkesbury resident Carolyn, as well as Tewkesbury Baptist Church, Spa Twyning, The Yorkshire Grey and all Liz, Luke and Oscar‘s incredibly kind and supportive friends this challenge can and will be achieved.
‘Luke’s Christmas’ will help to ensure that Luke’s beautiful eyes keep sparkling, keep his beautiful smile alive and help spread his eternal kindness over the Christmas period.
A huge thank you, Liz (Luke’s Mum).
