After over 25 years selling books in Tewkesbury, Ian Nicholson has concluded that in his late 70s it is time to retire. This decision has not been made easily as running alison’s bookshop was always a second career, and with a lifetime of the love of books, a pleasure.
For over a quarter of a century, alison’s bookshop has been blessed with great local support, as well as regulars who divert off the motorway to call in from as far
Cornwall. Ian says, “it is always rewarding to hear new visitors who come in and say ‘oh a real bookshop’, which is what alison’s have always been trying to offer.”
Over the last few months Ian has approached other book retailers to see if they wish to take over the business as is, or to slim it down and trade over a smaller area. These approaches continue. Or is there someone local who might like to do what Ian did over 25 years ago, enjoy a radical career change!?
Ian says,”I am not sentimental about maintaining the name alison’s but would like to see Tewkesbury still offering a bookshop amongst it’s extensive range of retail-
ers. Exactly why I chose back in 1998”.
There is a legacy to take over and a known location and destination as a bookshop. Many customers come to alison’s from the local larger towns of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Worcester, they also appreciate the choice Tewkesbury retailers have to offer;
alongside our scenic historical riverside location. Should there be anyone who reads this article who has a genuine interest do please contact Ian. In conclusion Ian said “Is there ever a right time? - No! but this feels the right time for me. All I can add is a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us since we opened back in 1999.”
Star Legal Specialists in Residential and Commercial Conveyancing, Wills, Powers of Attorney Probate, finance on Divorce and Settlement Agreements
To have a business that has traded in the same building for 200 years is a rarity.
Brendan Lawler, Partner and Solicitor at Star legal, shares the history of this Tewkesbury Practice, and reveals some of the benefits to moving to a more central position in town.
“Well a er more than 200 years in the same building at 69/70 High Street, Tewkesbury, we decided it was time to move! No longer can we say we are one of the oldest Law Firms in Gloucestershire opposite the Oldest Pub!
Although we are now above Rosada Lounge.
We joined Star Legal in 2019 but before that were Moore Brown & Dixon. Going back in time the firm name changed but “Moore” was a constant. Certainly in the 1860’s we were known as Moore & Romney. Inevitably the tools used by lawyers in the past remained in the building, not least law books going back to 18th Century including a print of the Magna Carta!
It has been a tremendous e ort by all the sta to make the move work and we made our move on the 22 July to 102-103 Church Street, Tewkesbury GL20 5AB. These o ices are much more suited to our requirements. Although we have a long history we continue to look to the future. We have sophisticated
IT systems to manage our work which is predominantly Residential and Commercial Conveyancing, Wills, Powers of Attorney and Probate and a couple of niche areas being finance on Divorce and Settlement Agreements. Although our o ices are now on the First and Second Floors we have access to a nearby accessible meeting room by prior arrangement. We now also have a video conferencing facility so meetings can be conducted remotely. However there are many clients who still find comfort on being able to come in and meet us in person. Feedback from sta and Clients has been very positive and we look forward to another 200 years!”

Here on Earth, we only ever see one side of the Moon. For millennia, the far side has been a mystery—hidden from view by the Moon’s gentle rotation in perfect step with its orbit. But this autumn, you can see the whole of it in breathtaking detail, right here in the heart of Tewkesbury.
From 16 October to 4 November 2025, Tewkesbury Abbey will host Museum of the Moon, a world-famous artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Suspended beneath the Abbey’s soaring Norman arches, this seven-metre illuminated sculpture is covered in high-resolution NASA imagery, revealing craters, plains, and features usually reserved for astronauts and space probes. Lit from within and accompanied by a serene soundscape by BAFTA-winning composer Dan Jones, it’s a spellbinding fusion of science and art.
But the Moon is only the beginning. Over three weeks, the Abbey will come alive with a rich programme of moonthemed events for all
through a Tea Dance Under the Moon (25 October), immerse yourself in the drama of Shakespeare by Moonlight (30 & 31 October), or thrill to live performances including Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, a
tribute, and Holst’s The Planets. Families can enjoy a dedicated half-term programme with space trails, science workshops, storytelling, and more.
Proudly sponsored by Cotteswold Dairy, this event is a celebration of creativity, heritage, and togetherness in the heart
of the Cotswolds. Don’t miss this extraordinary moment when history, art, and astronomy align. Come and see the Moon as never before—and all of it this time.
Book tickets and explore the full programme at www.tewkesburyabbey.org/themoon
It’s a rare chance to experience the Abbey in a completely different way—bathed in lunar and alive with community spirit. Whether you a lively night out, or a family adventure, you’ll leave with a new perspective on the Moon, the Abbey, and maybe even yourself.
Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service have hosted two parties of visitors from Bavaria during this year at the request of Kevin Cromwell who is one of the co-ordinators for the Tewkesbury Twinning arrangement.
Head of Unit Nic Price
at the end of February when a party of students and their teachers joined us for a trip up the River Avon. Despite it being one of the coldest days of the year they all much enjoyed themselves and had the opportunity to have some boat handling experience. Then at the end of July on what turned out to be the hottest day of the year so far we hosted a party of adult visitors from a Bavarian Medieval Association who had come to Tewkesbury for the annual Battle of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival.
The Unit laid on three boats to take them up to Strensham Lock where they helped lock through MVS Minerva and they
were very interested to see how a lock works.
Following their boat trip Severn Unit members
joined our visitors for an supper on the lawn at Tewkesbury Marina.”
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 9th September at Bushley Village Hall, GL20 6HT. Doors open at 1.30 and the meeting begins at 2.00. No experience needed just a relaxing afternoon watching an expert arrange

Our summer 2025 visit, to the beautiful Jacobean Stanway House, was a real treat for everyone. The restored water mill - re-opened in 2009 after extensive restoration - has a massive 24ft overshoot waterwheel grown on the Estate. It’s an amazing sight, and you can even buy home. The grounds are extensive and beautiful, though something of a challenge if you want to climb up to the famous fountain.
It’s gravity-fed, which is very unusual, and its 300’ spurt makes it the tallest one in the world. Each performance lasts a surprising 30 minutes,
The House, still inhabited by the Tracy family descendants, is untouched except by their real life - books everywhere - though the grounds are on the National Register of Parks and Gardens.
Some of us saw
everything; some mainly the quirky House and the Mill; and one or two of us just enjoyed the Fountain and the cuppa/ cakes from the cafe. All in lovely sunshine.

Starting at Ben Nevis in Scotland completing the climb in 5h 30mins, quick change we were back on the road travelling to Scafell Pike in England not arriving till 23:30 we made the decision not to climb until 04:00 due to the weather.
Completing Scafell Pike in an impressive 3h 4mins, we set off for Snowdon in Wales for boys had to dig deep with a few blisters, sore knees and a bad ankle - sleeping and eating between climbs fatigue had started to set in but they didn’t let it beat them and completed Snowdon in 3h 32mins, the lads really had their hearts set on completing it in 24 hours but due to work commitments and holidays they couldn’t start Ben Nevis till 10:30 meaning walking Scafell in the dark and this ended up not being possible.
Honestly, the lads were troopers having done the challenge myself I know how hard it is not only physically but mentally too. Callum, Oz, Luke, and Jack have been friends since Tirlebrook Primary School playing Football for Tewkesbury Town Colts and Cricket for Tewkesbury Cricket Club together, moving up to Tewkesbury Academy where their friendship continued also meeting some lovely friends inof the climb Efekan Gurler, their friendship and bond through the challenge was so lovely and I think they will remember this forever.

From the 23rd to the 26th of October, felt-making artisans
Hilly Edwards and Martine Levaudel will be resident at Studio 22 Barton Street exhibiting their exquisite work and showing visitors some of the infinite possibilities of the ancient craft of wet felting.
Martine stems from a centuries-long tradition of artisans and textile workers in the Champagne Region of France and moved to the UK in the 1990s.
Partly self-taught, she became a member of the International Felt-maker’s Association and took short courses led by renowned Felt-makers in order to further develop her felting skills.
Most of Martine’s work is inspired by her travels, the Arts and observing Nature, and, in her quest to maintain a continuity with this ancient craft, Martine dyes her wool from plants mostly grown in her garden.
Hilly is also an active member of the International Felt-maker’s Association. Her enthusiasm for wet
felt-making began in 2011 after seeing interesting hand-felted articles in some of Berlin’s markets. She developed her skills through making and attending numerous felt-making workshops. Hilly now shares her knowledge with others and leads many workshops herself. She enjoys the versatility of felt-making. She has a keen interest in natural, un-dyed wools, and has used some from many of the sixty different breeds of sheep native to the British Isles.
STUDIO 22 will be open to visitors from Thursday 23rd to Saturday 25th of October from 10am to 4pm, and then Sunday 26th from 11am to 5pm.

Bookworm has celebrated being in existence for 15yrs. No only selling donated books but also donated stamps. Bookworm works in partnership with the Pied Piper Appeal which raises money for local children who are living with life-limiting or terminal illnesses. This partnership gives us access to more stamps than we have on permanently on display, but we would like to
share with customers. Therefore we are going to trial one day in August, Saturday 30th, when we will be able to display the contents of stock books
and to see if we can help with any ‘wish lists’. Mike Bennett, our stamp specialist will also be on hand to help from 11-3pm.

in brick in a then fashionable style in the Georgians era. More recently, it has been given modern shop fronts and painted white.
There are no records of when it became a pub. It may have had an earlier name but it was the Buck and Breeches in 1810 when John Warner,
landlord for twenty-six years, died. In 1823, when the pub was sold, the sales particulars said that it had two parlours, a kitchen, brewhouse
er, the brewhouse was converted into a stable for two horses. This maybe went a small way towards dealing with the obvious disadvantage of not being able to accommodate traveller’s horses. For comparison, the Kings Head, at the other end of the street, horses. It also meant that the beer was now being bought in from elsewhere, suggesting that it had been sold to a local brewery.
The name change to the Tracy Arms came soon after this.
The earlier record-
ed licensees were long-serving. After John Warner’s long tenure his widow, Mary Ann, ran the premises for a further seven years. In 1872 Mr Hickson left to move to the much more prestigious Hop Pole Hotel. As the century progressed, though, the length of tenure became shorter, frequently less than twelve months, which is a sure sign probably because of the intense competition in the area from premises with far better facilities.

of a local beer-house, a no-frills establishment catering for the working men of the area, though it was very spacious and not like the cramped little beer-houses elsewhere in the town. It wasn’t a consequential pub. There were no societies headquartered there and no regular
entertainments. Its most frequent appearance in press reports was from the magistrates’ court, answering charges of being open outside licenced hours. There were also occasional petty theft cases and very occasional vandalism by drunken customers. By and large
When the old ‘British School’ in Barton Road closed in the early 1970s it was bought by the Tewkesbury Old People’s Welfare Committee as a base for their Golden Hour Club. They named it ‘Elizabeth Wyatt House’, to honour their founder, who had recently died. Elizabeth Wyatt was worthy of the honour, and worthy of being remembered in the town. She came to Tewkesbury in 1922, on marrying Leonard Wyatt, the Latin and history master at Tewkesbury Grammar School. They set up home in Jessop House, in Church Street. Elizabeth, who was an alumnus of Colston’s Girl’s School in Bristol, had trained as a teacher but didn’t resume her career. A talented pia-
nist, she joined the local Choral Society, eventually becoming Chairman and the Orchestral Society where she became Secretary. She was also a very active secretary of the Tewkesbury Girls Club, showing her keen interest in education.
It was when war broke out that she really used her skills. She took on the role of local organiser of the ‘Penny-a-week’ fund, which raised money to send food parcels to prisoners of war. She established the ‘Tewkesbury Prisoners of War Smokes Fund’, and developed the theme by taking leading roles in the local Prisoners of War Families Association and Soldiers, Sailors and Airman’s Families Association, where she had a role as the local visitor.
In 1944, she stood for election to the Borough Council and topped the poll. She became the sole woman on the Council, and was re-elected in 1949.
A consequence of war was that the ratio of old to young people had been heavily skewed, and the government be-
came concerned about the welfare of the elderly. In 1947 they developed a strategy, and invited Tewkesbury to send a representative to a county-wide meeting to discuss it. Inevitably, Elizabeth Wyatt was the nominee. The plan was to create a national network of Old People’s Welfare Committees, established with central support and guidance. Tewkesbury was chosen to pilot the idea in the county, led by Mrs Wyatt.
She set to work with gusto, creating the Committee to oversee welfare and then the Golden Hour Club to deliver it. Weekly lunches in the Watson Hall were the
by coach trips to destinations near and far. Craft sessions in the Watson Hall were used to create stock for an annual ‘sale of goods’ event in the Town Hall, raising funds for ‘comforts’ Dances, concerts talks and social evenings were added to the repertoire. The value of the initiative was obvious from the start and the club was immensely popular, attracting well
over 100 people to the lunches, and often two coaches for outings.
Elizabeth Wyatt led all this work until 1950, when a health scare forced her withdrawal from public life. She gave up all her responsibilities except the Golden Hour Club, where she remained as Chairman until 1962. Her husband retired in 1960, but sadly he died three years later. She sold up anding quietly until her own
death in 1974. There were no children, and the Wyatt family was slowly forgotten, with just the name of home of the organisation she founded to remember her.
Thomas Collins was the British School’s best-known pupil. His memorial in the Abbey bears the inscription ‘A Workman who need not be ashamed’. That could equally be said about Elizabeth Wyatt. By Steve Goodchild.

The venue plays a vital role for Tewkesbury residents and visitors by providing a thriving destination for entertainment, creative community and wellbeing groups and youth
theatre.
It is a more modern building than some that we will be reviewing but is an excellent example of how a venue can consistently make their space available to all.
The entrance is level access with automatic doors and the booking comfortable height for those standing or seated.
Row H is reserved for individuals with limited mobility and can be adapted by removing certain seats to accommodate wheelchair users who wish to remain in their chairs. The team is always available to assist if required. A variety of events are held in the upstairs bar. While the lift is quite small, it can accommodate a wheelchair user and one standing person. There is also an accessible toi-

• It would be great if more than one row could be available for disabled access.
• It would be useful if the seats were higher as them.
• The lift is small and larger wheelchairs or mobility scooters may
• The bar counters are quite high and till points a wheelchair or scooter. (There are lower bar counters available).
• Dropped kerbs on the corners of Sun Street and Oldbury Road are poor. (These areas are not owned by The Roses).

and dignity. That’s why we’re proud to host and support the Tewkesbury Access Forum — a vital initiative led by people with lived experience who are working collaboratively to improve accessibility across our town. By listening, learning, and taking action together, we can create a more welcoming and inclusive Tewkesbury for all.”

At Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club we recently welcomed Galen Bartholomew who gave us a two part presentation of the life of spiritual and political leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhi’s early life in India, London and South Africa in the period from 1869 to 1914 and the second covered his struggle for Indian Independence, religious tolerance and truth up to his death by assassination in 1948.
Galen told us that views on Gandhi were mixed and far from universally positive. Churchill called him a seditious Middle Temple lawyer and an anti-colonialist, whereas to Einstein he was a truly great human being and the most enlightened of all political men.
As a young man Gandhi trained as a lawyer in London and made efforts to adopt the British persona in his clothes and hairstyle, but having moved to South Africa he experienced racial prejudice his becoming a leading civil rights activist.
Later in life he returned to India espous-
ing the principle of “satyagraha” or non-violent protest and civil disobedience which caused terrible publicity for the
British and gave Indianstually led to India’s independence from British rule in 1947.
But Gandhi’s life was about much more than the struggle for Indian independence. He fought injustice, racial prejudice and religious intolerance. He increaspoor and down-trodden, relentlessly encouraged unity between Hin-
dus and Muslims and brought about the end of untouchability in Indian caste society. He wanted to create a new society in India from the roots upwards, not just to produce a situation in which power was transferred from the British Raj to a new Indian ruling class.
If you are a retired professional or businessman looking for something new to stimulate your retirement in a social environment, you would be very welcome to join us as a guest at one of our Tuesday morning meetings. A new exhibition has now opened to the public at the Broadway Museum & Art Gallery, telling the story of the coming of the railway to the village in 1904, and the profound effect it had on the people and businesses in the village and surrounding communities. It brought an end to horse-drawn coach transport, as well as enabling local people to travel more quickly, further and more safely than ever. The station was closed by British Railways in 1960 and the line itself was closed
in 1976. A new chapter began with the development of the heritage and Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Rail-

St Mary’s Church will hold a Heritage Open Weekend on 13th and 14th September during Heritage Open Days 2025.
The Parish Church of St Mary’s, Ripple lies close to the mighty River Severn between Tewkesbury and Worcester. It is said to be the biggest medieval parish church in the county, with a rich history dating back to 680AD when a char-
ter granted land for the building of a minster. The present church was built in 1180 and remains much the same.
Among its many wonders is the grave of Robert Reeve, the Ripple Giant. He died of a heart attack in 1626 at the
age of 56 having mown Uckinghall meadow single-handed in a day, for a wager. He was said to be 7’ 4” tall. His epitaph reads “As you passe by behold my length but never glory in your strength”.
As well as being a beautiful old building, St Mary’s Church, Ripple is listed Grade 1 by Historic England, among only 2.5% of all listed buildings. It is considered to be of “outstanding architectural or historic interest”. Among its many treasures is one of of misericords, sixteen seats used by monks, intricately carved in
1643. It spilled over into the village and no doubt the church and ended in a rare defeat for the Parliamentarians. Brigadier -
er of Britain’s oldest Civil War re-enactment group, The Sealed Knot Society, lived in Ripple Parish and has a plaque in St Mary’s. The church is home to the Society and holds a splendid service every October attended by 90 or more Society Members in full uniform. The Sealed Knot Society will hold an exhibition in St Mary’s Church over the Heritage Weekend.
