Horse
by Geraldine Brooks Paperback £9.99
Geraldine Brooks is one of those American writers who does not seem to have become established on this side of the Atlantic in any comparable way to her US standing, where she won a Pulitzer prize for her novel "March". This low UK profile is strange as those people who have read her books really enjoy them with some local reading groups having selected some, so here is one for those groups to savour in the future.
"Horse", Geraldine Brooks' latest could well attract new readers to her. The horse in question is the famous American racehorse Lexington. It is very much a book about that horse and his groom-cum-trainer - Jarret, who for much of the book is enslaved. Not many racehorses can have become immortalised by having a fictionalised biography written of their lives. Yet this book is so much more than an equestrian story. It offers a very good historical account of the States from 1850 through to 1875 before and during the Civil War. Lexington was painted throughout his career by Thomas J Scott, and we also follow Scott's life and his art while Lexington is owned by various wealthy landowners. There is a useful bibliophile at the back of the book after the "Afterword" which should not be missed!
There are two other strands to the book both relating to this equestrian art.
Martha Jackson, a New York art dealer becomes involved in 1954 with one of Scott's pictures, but this is very much a side line and sub plot to the main modern day story of Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia and Theo a Nigerian-American art historian-student with a nomadic past. Their meeting is by chance, but Theo has rescued a painting of a racehorse, while Jess has become involved with a British academic who wants to inspect the skeleton of a horse which has been stored away; these are of course both of Lexington. Their stories and how they unfold the history of the painting and of the skeleton provide a whole extra dimension to the book. The movement across the centuries breaks up and enhances the story of Jarret and Lexington and their races and
experiences as both are sold and move from Kentucky down to Louisiana and then back.
Jarret and his father Harry are there when Lexington is born on the estate of Dr Warfield, Harry is his trainer and a freeman. They nurture the natural talent of the young foal as he grows into an amazing racehorse. Jarret 's whole life is centred on Darley, Lexington's original name and as his fame spreads he is acquired by Ten Broeck and is renamed in memory of his origins. Jarret is his constant companion the two build such a bond that they understand each other, the animal following the human's instructions. Each major race is chronicled and the rivalries between racehorse owners are vividly portrayed. Recurring characters throughout the book are Dr. Warfield's family and in particular his grand daughter Mary Barr Clay. She grew up alongside Jarret on the estate, they keep in touch after Jarret learns to read and write. Then as near neighbours after Ten Broeck has sold horse and groom to Robert Alexander following a move back to Kentucky and a life at stud. There is so much in this book. Well researched historical data, the author knows this period well from "March", but her exploration of the history and origins of racing in America and her detailed knowledge of equestrian physiology are impressive. Some of this detail is again displayed with Jess in the modern section of the book whilst the art history of Theo's life adds more to the depth and enjoyment of the read. Theo's dog Clancy is a real character in himself!

Revealed at last -the secrets of Tewkesbury
David Elder is well known to local historians and readers of books covering our locality, writes Ian
B. Nicholson.
At the end of July he called in at Alison’s Bookshop to sign copies of his new book, Secret Tewkesbury.
In 2016, in association with Tewkesbury Historical Society, David published Literary Tewkesbury.
Indeed, within this new book he acknowledges the help he has received on this project from many locals, including THS members.
In Secret Tewkesbury David delves into Tewkesbury’s lost, forgotten and hidden histories, recounting some remarkable stories.
It features 100 photographs, many in colour, accompanying tales of remarkable characters and minor celebritieslike the seaman who carried Admiral Nelson’s wounded body to the cockpit of HMS Victory.
We all know that Tewkesbury dates back to Saxon days, is famous for its Norman abbey and the Wars of the Roses battle in 1471. David unearths fascinating facts which are less well known; celebrating Tewkesbury’s non-conformity which led to more than one riot.
He reveals how the town’s inhabitants were once comically portrayed as having sharp features, apparently because it was assumed that they all lived on the town’s pungent mustard.
Secret Tewkesbury records our town’s history of unusual events, historical buildings which have disappeared or are tucked-away.
There is also a regular feature of ‘did you know?’ detailing high-
lighted notes of interest. Secret Tewkesbury is for sale at Alison’s Bookshop in the High Street priced £15.99 and, while stocks last, there are signed copies available.
Ian B. Nicholson
David Elder will be giving an illustrated talk on his new book at Tewkesbury Library on Thursday 14th September. See Page 28 for more details

NORTH COTSWOLD STEAM & VINTAGE SHOW
9TH AND 10TH SEPTEMBER 2023 by Steam Show Admin
North Cotswold Steam & Vintage Show (formally Northleach steam and vintage show) is a traditional country steam show that originally started as a steam rally in the 1950s and ran as the Northleach Steam and Stationary Engine Show from the 1970s to 2000.
After a break of 13 years, the show was successfully revived in 2013 as the Northleach steam and vintage show by Steve Freemantle.
In 2021 Steve took the decision to retire from running the show and the existing members of the committee decided to continue. In 2022 after COVID restrictions ended the show was restarted but due logistical issues the show was moved to a new location in Notgrove. We have changed our name to reflect this new location.
For the 2023 show, we are delighted to be able to offer our visitors the option of camp-
ing at nearby Notgrove Holidays. If you would like to book a space to stay in your own tent / motorhome / caravan (£50 including two adult weekend passes to the show) please visit, northcotswoldsteamshow. co.uk
This may not be the biggest steam show, but we’ve certainly got tradition and a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere in an idyllic Cotswold setting
going for us with a good selection of attractions to see!
We operate as not for profit, with organisers and supporters all volunteering their time and expertise towards simply
being able to run the show each year and raise some monies for local charities and organisations. Our location is off A436, Notgrove, GL54 3BS, 2 miles outside of Bourton-On-The-Water.

TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW - FRISBY’S PLAQUE by John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society
According to ‘British Listed Buildings’: “This building is a key element in the townscape at the junction of the three main streets,” writes John Dixon. Many local people would agree but they
might be thinking of the plaque - and council planners would not agree as the future for town centres would see shops converted into residences to populate it with people with spending power to resurrect
the town centres.
Joe Frisby was not local but from Leicestershire. He had an idea to create a chain of shops which would allow ‘cordwainers’ (or shoemakers) to sell their boots and shoes.
The idea caught on
and this prime spot in the Town was chosen in 1902. The first tenant was Thomas Durrant a boot-maker whose grandson was killed in 1917. (His ‘boarder’ was William Evans who later ran an outfitter’s shop at no 17 - now the
Great Wall).
Frisby’s was successful and in 1958 “extensive alterations” were announced and our member, the late Gordon Baker, was employed as a builder. It was fortunate timing as in 1958 the decision was made

There were then numerous shoe shops in the town, and some felt that Milwards of No .1 High Street (now a Funeral Director) offered better quality than Mr Frisby, whose business was later sold to Wyles of No. 7.
Frisby’s business disappeared in 1991, after which it has hosted Estate Agents - but the famous plaque persevered, unlike any of the town’s shoe shops.
We are fortunate to have a Rowe engraving of the building before Frisby’s dominated it and suggests the way the area might look henceforward although it was then a ‘Library’.

Tewkesbury in Bloom entered the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ RHS awards this year, and on 17th July Janet Gwinnett visited both the beds at Ashchurch Road and The Little Park to judge the work done there by volunteers.
The IYN awards have been designed to encourage friends and neighbours to ‘green up’ their local commu-
Tewkesbury in Bloom
nities through gardening, environmental and community action; it is a non-competitive programme but feedback is given each year to help with growing and developing the chosen area.
The award ceremony will be held in September and we are hoping for good results.
A decision had been made not to enter the In Bloom Town award this year due to the lack of volunteers, but if we can increase the numbers we may be able to enter again next year.
L3Harris has supported Tewkesbury in Bloom for many years and this summer a group of employees used their ‘corporate volunteering time’ to come out and spend time deadheading, tidying and weeding the displays in and around the High Street and Back of
Avon. They made a terrific difference, proving that ‘many hands’ do indeed ‘make light work’! If you would like to get involved please email tewkesinbloom@gmail. com, or you may like to support us via our justgiving page: www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/karen-brennan-3?utm_term=NvAweMw54

Finally, well done to Helen Carver who won a prize for attending the most events. Save 1st31st July for next year!
GLOW WORMS - It is so exciting to gaze in wonder at the eerie luminescence in the grass in the darkness, as bright as a green L.E.D light on your device!
A Glow Worm is not a worm, but a beetle. Males look like a typical beetle, but the nightly glow of a female is unmistakable; she lights up her bottom to attract a male in the darkness of their grassland habitat. Mating season is June and July, so that is when the female glows, but once mated, it is lights out...Look online

THE STAR INN, QUAY STREET
The Star once stood on the corner of Quay Lane (as it was known before being widened to accommodate the railway) and Red Lane, where the rather attractive but derelict building with curved windows now stands. We only have a glimpse of the original building from a painting made by Joseph Farington (1747-1821), probably towards the end of the eighteenth century. It long predated the Iron Bridge, the brewery and the railway. The Star is on the far left, with a group of people outside.
The ‘Star’ name was transferred from another pub on the other side of the bridge, where the leaning mill building now stands, which became the Severn Trow, in about 1770. It is described in an auction advertisement in 1813:
‘All that capital and well-accustomed PUBLIC HOUSE called the STAR INN, most elegantly situated for business on the Quay, immediately opposite the place where the part of the cargoes of vessels are loaded and discharged.
The Premises are now in the occupation of Humphrey Brown, and consist on the basement floor of a capital arched Vault and two other cellars, on the ground floor, an excellent large parlour with bow window, a small Parlour, Bar, Kitchen, Back Kitchen, Brewhouse, with an oven and a court yard, in which are two Sheds and an exceptionally good Pump; on the first floor, of a spacious dining room with a large bow window, four roomy bed-chambers, a Closet and a Store-room ; and on the second floor, four Bed-chambers; a Stair-
case with mahogany hand-rail leads to upper apartments.’
What the building was before it became the Star isn’t known. Possibly it was an Inn with another name. Proximity to the port brought business apart from selling beer.
William Moore held auctions of Severn Trows, sailing on the Severn, and canal boats, sailing on the Avon, from the premises. Later landlords also ran sack hire businesses, which must have been a profitable side-line as bulk goods; grain, malt and other agricultural products were shipped up and down the river in sacks.
In 1871 it was sold again, and again it was described:
..containing in the basement capital arched cellaring; on the ground floor taproom, office, bar, parlour and kitchen; on the upper floor sitting-room and six good bedchambers. In addition, a back yard leading to two cellars with granary over, brewhouse, stable with loft over, piggeries and out offices. William Ricketts, the landlord, bought it for £600. His ownership was short; he died twelve months later, age 47. He was succeeded by his son-in-law James Thacker, who was also the landlord of the Anchor Inn, at the other end of the street. Surprisingly, he was the station master for the railway station on the High Street at the same time. Despite his enterprise, he was declared bankrupt in 1879.
The next licencee was Thomas Davis, who was completely unsuitable for the role. At his inquest, barely six months

Dear Tewkesbury Direct, I am really sad to announce that on Friday 22nd September 2023 the Bluebell Wood Florist shop will be closing after seven years of trading.
The shop lease will be coming to an end and I have decided to take the opportunity to continue with the wedding and funeral business at my home studio in Tewkesbury.
During my time at the shop I have worked with some truly wonderful
and talented people and I want to say a huge thank you to them for their hard-work, loyalty and friendship.
I have received incredible support from friends, family, traders and …. I am truly indebted to all of my wonderful customers over the years, without you it wouldn’t have been possible.
My dream to have a shop in Tewkesbury and to be part of the community has been fulfilled and exceeded on many levels and of course I will still be here, creating gorgeous wedding and funeral flowers from my home studio.

An Invitation from Tewkesbury Choral Society
Tewkesbury Choral Society is looking for new singers to join. Membership is open to all who can sing in tune, enjoy singing with others and are willing to do some homework each week.
There is no audition and our subscription is one of the lowest in the area, although the standard of our performances is always high.
We are a friendly, welcoming and inclusive organisation. Whatever your voice or experience of singing, why not come along to our first rehearsal in September.
Our concert on Saturday 2nd December 2023 will be Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo, and there will also be two works by Handel – “The King shall Rejoice” (sung at the King’s coronation in May) and part 1 of his most famous work “Messiah”, a nod to Christmas.

o’clock on Sunday witness heard deceased fall and ran to him, she gave him a little brandy but he expired almost immediately. He was not sober when he went to bed on Saturday night. He was the last recorded landlord. In 1883 the magistrates removed the licence. What happened to the property after that isn’t clear, but it must soon have been demolished and the present build-
ing constructed. Current planning application documents, for its conversion to apartments, say that it was built as a Post Office, but the source of that information is unclear. In 1913, Healings Mill bought it to use as offices, a use which lasted until the mill closed in 2006. It is now, with luck, destined for a regeneration as two apartments within a new residential development.

Three disasters. Two world wars, one bloody big depression. And every time, the band played on.
Tewkesbury Arts and Drama Society (TADS) are busy rehearsing for their September production of the much-loved British comedy-drama Brassed Off, to be presented at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury. They will be joined live on stage by Tewkesbury Town Band, playing the accompanying brass pieces. Brassed Off is based on real events. It tells the story of Grimley Colliery Band in the 1990s as it strives to continue to play and get to the national brass band finals at the Royal Albert Hall. This is despite the pos-
sible closure of the colliery in Grimley, a mining community in South Yorkshire, which would have a devastating effect on the whole neighbourhood and, of course, the band.
The play is seen
through the eyes of young Shane Ormondroyd who introduces us to his family: his granddad, Danny, the band leader; his dad, Phil, a hero of the 1984 miners’ strike; and his mum, Sandra, just trying to do
the best for her family. We also see colleagues and friends, Harry and Jim, with their supportive wives, Rita and Vera – not forgetting innocent young Andy and the mysterious outsider Gloria with her flugelhorn.

All play their part in telling us about the events that make up the band’s fortunes - sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but essentially uplifting - set against the very real threat of a community being torn apart by decisions made by the management.
Brassed Off is being directed by Paul Sawtell, who is originally from Tewkesbury but is now a professional West End and touring theatre stage manager. He was a
member of TADS back in the 1980s before leaving Tewkesbury to pursue his professional career. Currently he’s juggling his time brilliantly between the Wizard of Oz in London and Brassed Off in Tewkesbury.
TADS’ chairman, Rob Morris, said, “We were approached a couple of years ago by the Town Band to do some form of collaborative work and we both decided that there could be no better way to showcase the talents of our drama group and brass band than to perform Brassed Off. And there’s no better place to perform it than at the Roses.”
“We’re also really happy that Paul ap-
proached us wanting to direct. He has lots of energy and ideas, and has been great in bringing the play to life. This is a really fabulous adaptation of the film, with some terrific parts to play, and a wonderful story. Its message about how hard life can get still rings true today.” Brassed Off is on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced £12.50 and £10.50 and are available from The Roses Theatre box office (01684 295074) or online at www.rosestheatre.org/events/brassedoff

WOODED SLOPES WITH LOVELY VIEWS
September and October are my favourite months for taking this circular walk around Dumbleton Hill, an outlier of the Cotswolds which rises above a charming village, writes Jack B. Walker.
The wooded slopes are particulary beautiful as summer draws to a close and the leaves start to acquire their autumn colour.
Park at the side of the road near the church, leaving access for farm machinery which uses the lanes year-round.
Walk along the main street and take the turning on the left into Dairy Lane (1)
Passing the Village Hall on your left, walk to the end of the lane towards the cricket club, and look for a stile in a metal fence on the right (2). Cross the stile and follow the direction arrows across a small field, through a gate and up a hillside towards some woods. Go through the gate (3) and follow the path through the trees.
Follow the path around the edge of the wood, then down across fields, following the way marker arrows.
There are often cattle in these fields – and I have encountered a bull here. Docile, but please proceed with caution!
Eventually you will
meet a bridleway coming up from Didcot Farm (4). Turn left and follow this track as it climbs back towards the edge of the wood.
Go through the gate (5) and follow the path as it climbs steeply to the top of the hill, then along the edge through the trees. Eventually you will reach a farm gate on your left (6) with a track which leads to Hill Farm. Go through the gate and walk across the fields at the summit, then pass through another gate to the right of the farm (7)
farm cottages belonging to Dumbleton Estate (8), and take the lane ahead
back to the church of St Peter, which is well worth a look inside.

Then and now - a thank you
I was very fortunate that a reader from the Queens Head estate,t Aston Cross (as featured in Then & Now, August) invited me to visit his home, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.
This I have been able to do and was struck by how much the couple love their home of four years. It has been
built to a very high standard and, because it is a new-build, it has a very modern form of heating an Air Source Heat Pump, which many of us will have to tackle in the future.
I was grateful for this insight into perhaps futuristic living.

The larvae (caterpillars) of box tree moths eat the foliage on box plants (Buxus), writes Tim
Hoskins.
While the plant rarely dies after one attack, repeated defoliation is harmful and plants are usually dead by year two or three.
I’ve been watching out for them since I looked after a garden in London where they were firmly established.
At that time, the main reaction was panic, because nobody knew what to do. While there is still plenty of panic to be enjoyed across the internet, there are solu-

tions if you act quickly, relentlessly and methodically.
Sadly, box tree moth is now present across the country and too many people are unaware of it or how to contain it.
First, you need to identify the larvae and distinguish the damage from box blight.
Green caterpillars may be seen, although they often hide deep inside the crowns so look for webs and obvious drop-

before winter. Cut down wildflower areas, but leave the debris on the ground for 2 weeks before collecting, to allow seeds to
make contact with the soil.
Prune chilli plants to about 6-9” by mid September for over-wintering.
To destroy them, insecticides work well, but if the caterpillars are hiding, they escape. Insecticides are also indiscriminate and inflict collateral damage. Pheromone traps work for the moths, physical removal works well and predatory invertebrates are available.
My favoured method of dealing with any caterpillar attack is to use a bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis.
If you’d prefer to use a badged product, it’s in Xentari, but you can buy it as a powder online. There are issues regarding use and licences apply to professional users, but B. thuringiensis is widely available, legal to buy, the bacteria are naturally present in soil and harmless in the doses you will use. If in doubt, read and adhere to label advice.
Jobs that need doing (that everyone forgets):
Cut back lavender by the middle of September, even if it’s still flowering. The plants need time to put on new growth and harden off

The idea behind the use of this tape is not to do with stability or aid in movement. It shouldn’t effect how you move or aid any ability of any muscle. It acts in two ways.
Firstly, it is applied under tension with the area of pain or the area diagnosed with a dysfunction being the focal area of the tape.
will provide nutrition and oxygen to promote healing and it will also help in allowing inflammatory mediators to exit the area.
The second part of the function of taping is that it can act as a skin marker. Although it does not stop you from moving, at the extreme ranges of movement it will pull on the skin which will remind the body to not visit those extreme ranges of motion.
Although taping is often seen on athletes, as you can see it is not something which needs to be limited to this sector. It can be used alongside treatment to aid
healing and speed up recovery. Alone it is not a treatment but with other manual therapy or exercise prescription, it can be of great assistance.

The tape will contract and in doing so it will lift the skin and underlying subcutaneous fat layer away from the soft tissues.

This is particularly useful when an injury is healing and the pain levels have dropped. It limits repetitive irritation.

Comedy musical nostalgia at Probus Club
Most members of Tewkesbury and Bredon Probus Club remember a musical comedy duo in the 1950’s and 60’s called Flanders and Swann who performed various comic monologues and songs all over the UK and became extremely popular in that period.
Although one or two of our members saw them live in concert at the time, most of us remember seeing them on our small screen black and white televisions, so when a Flanders and Swann tribute act, Jim Mitchell and Oliver Williams came to us to perform the songs we remember way back then, we eagerly anticipated a somewhat different Tuesday morning meeting.
The whole morning was a rousing musical performance with lots of audience participation and we all sang along with well-known

If you are a retired professional or businessman looking for something new to stimulate your retirement in a social environment, you would be very welcome to join us as a guest at one of our Tuesday morning meetings. For more information, please visit our website at www. probusclub.net/tewkesbredon/ or contact our Secretary Steve Tucker on 07803 907243. At the end of the morning, Jim and Oliver’s finale was that wonderful operatic masterpiece, Nessun Dorma, except this time they produced alternative words from a Tandoori Restaurant (making it Nessun Korma) and put the words on large boards so that we could all sing along with great gusto with words that were proba-

For our August outing to Batsford Arboretum, we were blessed with good weather.
We arrived by minibus or car, and met up in the restaurant.
As true WI members, we ordered Tea and Cake (or a more substantial lunch) and then headed into the Arboretum.
What a lovely cool place to be - under the trees on a hot afternoon. The site is magical, but was a bit taxing for those of us not able to cope with the steep slopes. The sight of a bench to sit on was very welcome!
