This novel based in Cardiff's Tiger Bay starts in March 1952 with the death of George VI being announced on the BBC. That smoothly sets the time period, and the novel runs through the next six months for Mahmood Mattan, a Somali ex-seaman now married to a local Welsh girl. During the novel we get to learn a lot about Mahmood's childhood, and family; there are frequent references to his mother left at home in Africa with his brothers when he set off on his travels which eventually led to a life at sea. These flashbacks help the reader to, in part, Mahmood'sunderstandcharacter and his approach to life in Wales of the 1950s. Even in seaside cities with a strong maritime tradition, racism is an everyday occurrence and is part of Mahmood's life; the more so having married a local girl, Laura. The main part of the book though is based on a real life Violetmurder.Volacki, a shopkeeper, is murdered late one evening when she is about to lock up; her sister and niece in the adjoining room hear nothing. Their family story, before and after these tragic events are also recounted. The police conduct their enquiries but having been told that a Somali man was seen in the locality this leads them to Mahmood. Without any real evidence and only some circumstantial facts he is charged with her murder. He protests his innocence; initially though he remains confident he will be freed even as the weeks of his incarceration drag by. The reader witnesses these months of mainly solitary confinement. Oddly, Mahmood's cell offers a limited glimpse of Laura's parents back garden so they can exchange, at pre-arranged times, to wave to each other. There are prison visits, Laura coming accompanied by one of their three sons; also his friend who helps him by garnering support to pay for legal help, and providing moral comfort.

The police are biased, apparently quite prepared to seek no other suspects despite Mahmood's protestations. The Detective Inspector apparently manipulating the evidence and witnesses to support his unfounded case. It takes time for Mahmood to realise the full predicament he is in and his relationship with his solicitor could be better. He has faith that British justice will save him and he is still convinced that the jury will see through the police fabricated case and announce his innocence, even if all the odds are stacked up against him.Mahmood's life within the Tiger Bay community and relationships are played out against the background of the murder and the charges and trial that await him.This novel has been short listed for a couple of prizes, very often the better novels do not win, this one certainly deserves all the praise it has received. Hopefully it will prove popular with readers which will compensate the author for having missed out on the cash prizes. The detail to the time period is excellent, the writing praiseworthy and the storyline, based as I have already said on a real life case, is very moving.

TEWKESBURY St Giles church is re-launching the popular Bredon Boat Races. This fun event was suspended in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid. The event will take place on the picturesque Old Rectory Meadow, adjacent to the River Avon, Dock Lane, Bredon. The centerpiece of the day is the exciting Bell Boat races in the River Avon. over a year ago, Tewkesbury Choral Society were wondering if it would be wise to meet again, to sing post-Covid and prepare for

TEWKESBURY CHORAL SOCIETY UPDATE

Just their The worst of the pandemic seemed to be over and singers and other performers all over the country were beginning to feel restless after such a long period of inactivity. The committee decided to relaunch the choir and an invitation was issued to the membership asking them to come along to our ﬁrst rehearsal in almost two years. Just over 60 people turned up to begin rehearsing “The Creation “ by Joseph Haydn to be performed in December.. This number (60) reflected the caution that many people were feeling. Pre-Covid Tewkesbury Choral previously had upwards of 120 singers. However “The Creation” was quite straight forward and was full of memorable tunes and we enjoyed singing together once again. We took every precaution we could to mitigate the risks. Our concert was held in our “home”Tewkesbury Abbey. Our performance, with a small string orchestra and three soloists was given to an audience larger than we could have hoped for and we were encouraged by their applause.Wehoped that Covid was on the decline and we could look forward with optimism and in January, we began to rehearse a more ambitious work - “A German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms for a concert in May. Our numbers increased slightly and we were pleased to welcome a few new singers into our ranks. However our hopes of a Covid-free world were sadly dashed as Omicron took hold. The precautions we had introduced in September were rigorously adhered to - and we believe that nobody went down with Covid as a result of singing with us on a Monday evening.TheBrahms’ Requiem is much loved work but it is “big sing” and usually accompanied by a large orchestra, including brass and timpani. John Holloway (our musical director) made two controversial decisions - 1) to sing it in English and 2) to use Brahms’ own arrangement for piano for four hands. Both these options prove to be very wise indeed. The choir did not have to struggle with the (sometimes difﬁcult) German pronunciation and having the piano accompaniment meant they sang with the piano, instead of against a huge orchestra! Our regular accompanist, David Whitehead and his wife, Hayley played superbly and our two soloists were also absolutely brilliant. Singing in Tewkesbury Abbey is always a privilege and wonderful experience - and again our audience were very appreciative.Early on in our rehearsals, Russia invaded Ukraine, and several members of the choir expressed their wish that we should dedicate the Brahms’ Requiem, to the people of Ukraine. Unlike other Requiems, Brahms chose words of comfort and peace - which seemed appropriate in these circumstances. Finally there was a retiring collection, which raised £1700, thanks to the generosity of our singers and audience members. The 2021 Season ended on a real high! We are now about to begin preparing music by Bach, Finzi, Vaughan Williams and Vivaldi for a concert of Christmas music on Saturday 3rd December. Our first rehearsal is on Monday 12th September in Tewkesbury CofE School, Chance Street beginning at 7.30pm. We are always happy to welcome new singers to the choir. You do not need to have a voice of operatic quality or read music to join us. An ability to sing in tune, do a little homework between rehearsals and enjoy singing with others is all you need. Free Heritage Open Days in Tewkesbury

Tewkesbury will be participating in the National Heritage Open Days event, which takes place between Friday 9th and Sunday 18th September. Participating museums and historic buildings all over the country will be opening their doors to visitors for free, with many offering ‘behind the scenes’ tours and access to areas not generally open to the public. Tewkesbury Town Hall will be offering tours on Saturdays 10th and 17th September. A guided talk by Tewkesbury Town Councillors through the building will include the Council Chamber, Mayor's Parlour and CornVisitorsExchange.will also be able to see the cells in the basement, as the Town Hall was once used as a Court. The Royal Hop Pole, famously referenced by Charles Dickens, will offer guided tours on Sundays 11th and 18th September. Advance booking is required. The Royal Hop Pole is a Grade II* listed building with a restored Medieval Banqueting Hall and paintings. The part-15th century hotel was once one of the town's three coaching inns, when Tewkesbury was a vital hub of the national coachingCharlesnetwork.Dickens mentions the Hop Pole in his novel ‘Pickwick Papers'. Seen from the front, the building was originally three Inns: the central section has an ornate portico, dating from 1921, having replaced a wide gateway leading to the yard and stables at the rear. Above the portico is the royal coat of arms of Princess Mary of Teck, later Queen Mary, Royal Consort to George V.

Fiddlesticks opened in January 2021 on a farm in Eldersfield, where Ed Vaughan produces unique garden rooms from reclaimed doors and windows. Ed builds his structures in a large rented barn, creating greenhouses, potting sheds and garden rooms. He will also make chicken houses, beekeepers' dens, garden kitchens - any structure that adds to a garden and home. Ed only uses materials that would ordinarily be destined for the recycling centre, or at least are on their second life. He recently started milling his own timber too. Every structure is unique and tailored to a customer's specific requirements. Ed’s inspiration comes from nature and his surroundings, as well as a desire to make useful structures that people can incorporate into their everyday lives. The use of reclaimed materials enables Ed to exploit the fascinating character of older materials in his garden rooms. He works closely with clients to produce spaces that will change the life and use of their gardens and outside living areas.

Built after 1986, it is a comfortable dwelling for senior citizens and has maintained external features which remind us of its industrial past. The building of the Malting in 1857 was an attempt to

It prospered until the firm’s focus on Ashchurch, and the buildings’ industrial historyDemolitionended. followed in 1986, after which the Maltings residences were built with an appropriate architectural style, symbolising the place the building had played in the attempt to industrialise Tewkesbury.

Last Summer I took a stroll from Tewkesbury’s Lower Lode to Deerhurst, where there are two ancient ecclesiastical buildings - both of which have a fascinating past, writes Jack B. Walker. This year I returned to continue the Severnside walk, as far as the Coalhouse Inn at Lower Apperley. Parking is available (for a small fee) at Odda’s Chapel, which is in the stewardship of English Heritage.This Saxon chapel was commissioned in 1056 by Earl Odda, and dedicated to the Holy Trinity in memory of his brother Aelfric, who died at the spot. For many years the chapel was used as a cottage. Even older, and equally fascinating, is the ancient Deerhurst Church, which was built in AD 800. There was once a priory here too, parts of which survive adjacent to the church (in private ownership). A recently published ‘Pilgrims Walk’ links the church with those at Tredington and Stoke Orchard, as well as Tewkesbury Abbey. A leaflet with map is available in the church for a donation.Forthe walk, follow the public footpath signs from Odda’s Chapel down to the River Severn (1). Passing a hollow tree on your right, turn left along the river bank (2) and continue to walk ahead following the Severn Way. On the opposite bank you can see moorings and the popular Yew Tree Inn at Chaceley. Keep along the tow path, eventually passing some ponds to the left, with the river still on your right. At the end of the last pond (3) follow the path straight ahead until you reach the Coal House Inn, which has seasonal opening hours. Following a talk by Mike Lovatt ear ly this year on the restoration of the ancient water mill at Stanway, Tewkes bury and Bredon Hill Probus Club ar ranged a including cloth mak ing, paper production and as a sawmill, well before its current purpose to produce stoneground whole meal and white sifted flour for breadmak ing. Mike then handed over to Richard Podd, miller and local stone mason who guided us through the intricacies of the mill. The mill is built with three sto reys on the side of the hill and Richard took us right to the top level and outside where we found the spring-fed millpond which pro vides all the energy to drive the workings of theAsmill.the water flows through the mill it drives a huge 7 me ter iron waterwheel cast in Tewkesbury by local iron founders James Savory in the 19th century. When we entered the mill, the waterwheel was stationary but when Richard started the water flowing through the system, we were

Whilst the waterwheel only rotates at 6 revolutions per minute, it produces enormous power which is routed through an ingenious system of gear wheels made of wood and cast iron to drive the millstones. The grain that arrives from local farmers is milled down through the process to produce the flour ready for sale. The restoration has been completed to exacting standards to ensure that it faithfully represents the way it was centuries ago. There are no concessions to modern technology and the mill operates using old-fashioned but very effective systems with much use of string and bells! Tewkesbury Repair Café was started in July 2017 by a team of about 15 volunteers. Repair Cafes are free events where people who have items in need of repair are put in touch with people who have the skills and passion to repairThisitems.can include: clothes, furniture, electrical and electronic items to name a few. Items are repaired for free but customers are asked to cover the cost of any parts used and are encouraged to make a donation to cover our running costs. Apart from COVID lock down we have run pretty much every month. During that times we have not only saved thousands of items from landfill but have also saved the people of Tewkesbury over £40k in replacement costs. The Repair Cafe relies on volunteers to operate. We require people with a wide range of skills from admin/Front of House, to making and serving teas and coffees and of course to undertaking repairs. No previous experience is necessary, so long as you have an interest, our existing volunteers help to support and train new volunteers.
