TEWKESBURY’S TOP OF THE CLASS Tewkesbury School students, staff and parents had more cause for celebration this Summer, when another set of excellent exam results were achieved. Photographer Jack Boskett was there to capture the moment when these hard-working students discovered how they had fared in their ‘A’ levels. Turn to page 53 to see the GCSE celebrations.

Regular visitors to our shop know of my favourite book of the year listing, which now covers some 17 years. I have been asked several times when I would be reviewing my book of 2016. Now, at long last, it is available in paperback. James Kelman is a Scottish author with a back list which includes back in 1994, Booker winner "How late it was, how late", and several volumes of short stories. He is not however one of the big British names, but is more recognised the other side of Hadrian's wall. This novel starts up in Scotland where 16 year old Murdo lives with his father Tom. His mother has recently died of cancer, as had his sister, a couple of years earlier, of the same rare strain. They are both damaged individuals and to help them recover they set off to the States to stay with relatives in Alabama. The storyline is about Murdo's holiday in America; a book about a Scottish lad, who loves music, plays the accordion and his adventures and experiences in the States. After landing in Memphis they make their way, via bus, across to their relatives, but en route they miss a connection and end up having to stay overnight in a predominantly black town where Murdo, taking an early morning stroll, stands out, especially as he listens in to a family musical get

Thanks for your patience during our reorganisation! together. He is soon invited to join in and is happily playing, alongside a renowned jazz lady, when his Dad tracks him down and insists he packs up so they can catch their connection. Murdo infatuated with grand daughter Sarah, is invited to join them in a few weeks time, and share a gig in Lafayette. Murdo and Tom relax with their relatives but all this time he is working out how to keep this rendezvous, only to discover that it is Lafayette in Louisiana that is his ultimate destination. The story unfolds gently as Murdo endures quiet days in his Uncle's house, but he creates a plan to get to the gig, and the book provides a lovely read as Murdo makes his way to the musical event, and how that trip helps him start to recover from his loss. There is something very special about this novel, like a rare malt it should not be hurried! Selected by: Ian B. Nicholson Owner/Manager Alison’s Bookshop and Music Room, Tewkesbury

World’s best grass-fed steak hails from Cotswolds Beef reared and produced in the Cotswolds by award-winning farmer and butcher Martin Gilder, who breeds Longhorn cattle at his farm in Gretton, has scooped the title of the World's best grass-fed steak. Martin’s rib-eye steak, which combines traditional ageing with more modern techniques, was judged the World’s Best Grass Fed steak at the annual World Steak Challenge held in London during July. Following an intense day of blind judging, more than twenty five meat experts drawn from farming, butchery, production, the academic and food retail fields, drew up a shortlist of seventeen gold medal winning steaks, from which Martin’s rib-eye was chosen. The winning grass fed rib-eye was from a Longhorn Cross aged 29 months, dry aged on the bone in a Himalayan salt chamber for 55+ days. Commenting on his win, Martin said: “Wow! It’s the first time we entered this competition and we’ve won best grass fed steak! “This really is amazing, my team and I at Martin’s Meats have worked so hard to produce the best dry aged beef possible - and now we really can say we

Martin Gilder with some of his Longhorn cattle have the World’s best steak! “So come on all you top restaurants, give us a call on 01242 621493 - we want to supply you with the worlds best!” Marco Peerdeman, Chair of the World Steak Challenge judges, said: “It was good to see a variety of grass and grain fed gold winners qualify for the second round of judging. “The best grass fed steak had a nice colour to start and once cooked was very tender, with an outstanding flavour.” Little wonder Martin’s business now supplies more than 200 hotels

and restaurants from Cornwall to Worcester. There was one other gold medal for England which went to a sirloin grass-fed steak from Dawn Meats in Cambridgeshire. In total, seventeen steaks from a long list of more than 120 from different countries and twenty five different breeds were awarded gold medals in the 2017 championships. The overall champion for 2017 came from ABP in Poland. For more information about Martin’s Meats, visit their website www.martinsmeats.com

VINEYARDS PLAY AREA – WORK TO BEGIN Following the public consultation session held on Saturday 25th March, Tewkesbury Borough Council is pleased to announce that the favoured play area design for the Vineyards area has been confirmed and work is to begin shortly. Over 200 local residents kindly provided feedback on the day and the council are very grateful to those who gave freely of their time after the event to help create a truly inclusive play area, accessible to all. Due to the site being within a conservation area the design has had to be submitted for planning permission, agreement was achieved on 4th July. Contract with the preferred supplier will be drawn up in the next few weeks. The Vineyards is the main play area within the town and the existing site, although over

40 years old attracts a large number of residents and tourists. It benefits from a nearby car park and has a footpath link from the town centre and nearby housing estates. The installation of the new equipment will take four to five weeks to complete and therefore

the council has made the decision to start works in September, this ensures the current play facilities in the area are available during the school summer holidays. It is expected that the new play area will be completed and open to the public by 20th October 2017.

OPEN DAY at Tewkesbury Community Fire Station Saturday 2nd September 11am - 4pm Displays from fire cadets, lots to do and see for the entire family. Oldbury Road, Tewkesbury.

The search for Luna, the much loved pet goes on. Can you help? It’s been a heartbreaking seven weeks since Luna went missing from Bredon on the 1st July after escaping from the family home. Luna was rescued by Helen Grainger from AHAR in Ireland after she fell in love with her on their Facebook page and arranged to have her transported over last November. Luna is an English Foxhound cross Beagle but has the appearance of a skinny Labrador. She was extremely nervous when Helen initially rescued her but after months of dog training classes and socialisation, Luna’s character was starting to shine through. “It’s hard to gain

Luna’s trust but she trusted me and her dog walker, Sorrell Griffiths, implicitly.” Helen said. Luna is missed very much by her family who have been continually searching since she went missing in July, using a drone & heat seeking equipment during the initial searches. “Public support has been phenomenal from everyone trying to help find my Luna.” said Helen. It is now thought that Luna may be in the Evesham area with someone who may not

be aware that she’s part of a family that is very much missed. Luna is micro-chipped and neutered and if anyone has information on

her whereabouts please call Helen on 07971 974826. There is a reward for Luna’s safe return.

86 High Street I am guilty at not paying sufficient attention to this building in the old upper High Street - I bet nobody looks at its replacement, writes John Dixon. Mary Lodwig has made me look again after sending me this delightful photograph of its frontage along with a fascinating motorbike (model and date, enthusiasts?) and such smart young children. I presume the girl was the then Mary Little. This is her story: “Around 1933 aged 10, Dad often visited his Auntie - Miss Winn Davies and her son Howard. “She lived in the house with Tom Cooper - she was his housekeeper. (Dad wondered why they had separate bedrooms!). “There were 3 floors and, around 1948 my parents, rented the 2 rooms at the top of the house and shared the toilet on the middle floor. There was a toilet in the yard and kitchen at the back. From their front window they could look into the windows of the Tudor House. “Steels Court (to the right) had only two cottages; one was very dingy with an old man Mr. (Richard) Knight, a tin smith with Haywards. At the top of the court was the Geoff Pope’s uncle Godwin (‘Goddy’). “Next door at 85 was Shakespeare’s furniture shop, where they bought a 3-piece suite.” Thanks, Mary!

Local businesses help volunteer gardeners In the style of the popular TV series DIY SOS two local businesses have come to the aid of gardening volunteers and fixed the fencing surrounding the town's showcase flowerbed, writes Shelby Powell.

The small garden situated on the corner of Lower Lode Lane is fondly referred to as the 1471 flowerbed by local residents as the box hedging is carefully clipped by volunteers into the numbers 1471 representing the year of the Battle of Tewkesbury and is usually planted with red and white geraniums representing the Houses of Lancaster and York. Earlier this year the trellis fencing which provides a screen and support for plants collapsed and was removed by the Council who allow volunteers to garden on the land under a licence agreement. The cost to replace the fencing was quoted in the region of £2,000 which volunteers were unable to find. To d d i n g t o n - b a s e d Cotswold and Vale Fencing and Landscape Supplies decided to provide the fencing and posts free of charge and a team of volunteers organised by Stefan at Roberts Express Delivery gave up their time to put it in place. Billy and Christopher Dudfield, directors of Cotswold and Vale, said: “We are originally from Tewkesbury and we wanted to do something for the town. We were really pleased to be able to help.” In 2016 the flowerbed was included in the Britain in Bloom judging tour which resulted in a gold award for the town. This year volunteers have to wait for an awards evening taking place at Warwick Castle on 14th September before they know the results of their gardening efforts.

ANIMAL MATTERS by Caroline Gould of Vale Wildlife Rescue, Beckford

BUSY YEAR FOR SWANS As we get closer to the end of 2017, we have been looking back on the number and species of animals that we have admitted to Vale Wildlife Hospital so far this year, writes Caroline Gould.

• FENCING • EQUESTRIAN & DOMESTIC • SUPPLIED & ERECTED • DIGGER WORK • LANDSCAPING

Overall our numbers are up by around 700 compared to last year and we look set to top the 5,000 mark by the time the year finishes, a record for us. There has been a notable increase in the number of swans that we have treated, starting back in January with the horrendous injury that George, the Pittville swan suffered after being shot through the eye with a crossbow bolt. Amazingly he recovered from the attack and is now the proud dad to six growing cygnets. But we have already had to deal with ‘people’ problems with two of his cygnets so far and they are only about half grown! Firstly, one of them got part of a child’s toy stuck round its neck – an easily solved problem but another example of litter problems. We were then called upon to remove a fishing hook from the beak of another one. Luckily it was simply a case of cutting and removing the hook and releasing the cygnet back to its parents. But fishing litter related injuries are far too common and can cause very serious problems – we regularly deal with

waterbirds that have swallowed hooks and line or have become tangled in discarded line. There is no excuse for littering – take it home!! The new swan pools at Vale Wildlife Hospital in Beckford, near Tewkesbury.

Fishing hook removed from a swan’s neck

Recently, a friend of ours who ran a swan rescue centre near Stourport sadly passed away. Sandy was an amazing lady who dedicated her life to helping waterbirds and she will be sadly missed. This has also led to us dealing with many more swans than we were pre-

viously and is the reason that we have recently built two swan rehabilitation pools at Vale, costing over £20,000 (we would welcome donations towards their cost). They have made a huge difference to the care that we can offer to swans, geese and ducks. The pools also have intensive care facilities alongside them for birds needing more comprehensive treatment. Since completing the pools we have treated many swans, some due to fishing litter, some with lead poisoning and others with various infections and illnesses. Having access to the

pools seems to be really therapeutic for them and improves their recovery time no end. Improving our facilities is vital to the charity so that we can continue to offer the best care to wildlife casualties. There are many other projects that we would like to undertake but finances prevent us from doing this. We have to raise £30,000 every month to continue our work, with funding for projects such as the swan pools has to be raised on top of this. Community spirit help Tewkesbury family fund a custom-built trike Parents of local 9 year old boy, Josh Horsley, who was born with Spina Bifida and Hip Dysplasia, felt overwhelmed when local business Emsea Ltd and Tewkesbury Rotary Club came to their rescue. The Tomcat trike, which was recommended by Josh’s Occupational Therapist (OT) to help with his rehabilitation, and strengthen his muscle tone, came at a cost of £2400. For Josh’s mum Hayley Horsley, help with funding the trike couldn’t have come at a better time: “It had been a stressful week for everyone,” said Hayley, “as we had just been told that Josh had to have an operation. When Tomcat’s office manager, Jon Poole, called and told us about the very kind offer from Tewkesbury Rotary Club, and Emsea Ltd I just burst into tears! It really was the most wonderful news we could have wished for!!

The Trike is going to be an amazing part of Josh’s recuperation and ongoing therapy after the operation. Thank you to both organisations for showing community spirit still exists!” Emsea Ltd believes that giving back to their local community is just a part of their business and social ethics. Chris Sweet, director at Emsea Ltd explained: “Emsea has a strong and clear position regarding social ethics and as a successful local business we believe it is our duty to support the local community in a variety of ways. We have worked closely with Tomcat for many years, helping to design and manufacture parts and so we were thrilled to be offered the chance to make a very real difference to Josh’s day to day life. We wish him every

happiness with his new trike.” The Tewkesbury Rotary Club is no stranger to funding worthwhile causes: recent projects have included three defibrillators now located in Tewkesbury, and support for projects at Tewkesbury and Alderman Knight Schools. In addition the club helps national and international disasters by funding Shelterboxes and Aquaboxes. Club secretary Andrew Turner said, “The Rotary club is very

pleased to be able to help Josh with the trike and look forward to seeing him out and about in the very near future.” Josh’s Tomcat trike is due to be collected by the family by mid August (each trike takes approximately six weeks to build at the manufacturing site in Gloucester) Bob Griffin, founder, and MD of Tomcat concludes: “We’re so proud to be part of this wonderful story, and what was initially a problem for the Horsley family, quickly got solved by the community they live in!”

AN OLD POEM RE-PUBLISHED In 1840, the building which is now Allison’s bookshop was the premises of James Bennett; printer and publisher. One of his publications is now back on sale in the shop, albeit at a somewhat different format.

Est 1991

In 1820, Cecilia Cooper, an ‘incomer’ to Tewkesbury, ran a school for young ladies in Lilley’s Alley. She published a poem about the Battle of Tewkesbury. Sadly, it was not an overnight success, but it was sufficiently sought after for her to produce a second edition in 1840. A lot had changed in England between those dates, and her subtle re-writing reflected this. Apart from these two publications, Cecilia seems to have had little visibility in local society, though from her list of subscribers she must have known the ‘movers and shakers’ in town. The Tewkesbury Battlefield Society has now republished this poem. Not because of its contribution to understanding of the battle (it is not at all accurate) nor for its contribution to Romantic-era poetry (it is mediocre at best) but because of what is says about a small-town society at the end of the Georgian period, and its view of historic events. The poem is now augmented with a series of

especially-commissioned woodcuts created by an artist who was raised in the town. In an attempt to gain some insight into Miss Cooper

some research into her circumstances and the people who subscribed

to the book is included. There is also an essay by Dr Michael Page of the University of Nebraska Lincoln to explain Cecilia’s place among the poets of her era. The whole presents a vignette of the life and aspirations of an aspiring middle-class lady of Tewkesbury in the early nineteenth century.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

WALKING WITH NATURE AND HISTORY Ideal for a late summer stroll, and particularly for those who love nature, this completely flat route along the historic Coombe Hill Canal provides the opportunity to visit a wonderfully managed wetland nature reserve, writes Jack B. Walker The route is easy to follow as it simply takes the towpath along the old canal. Since my last visit over two years ago, the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust has laid out two trails, a longer one which circles around the wetland areas, and a shorter stroll along the towpaths. Our route combines a bit of both. Use the Trust’s Car Park by the wharf, which is reached from a narrow lane from the

ways and improving road links, it was never going to be viable to complete the five mile route into town. Nowadays life along the canal has very much gone back to nature, thanks to the expertise and care of the GWT. Continue along the towpath, passing the first footbridge (1). (If your time is limited, you can cross the canal here and just visit the nature reserve). Carrying on,

traffic lights on the A38 at Coombe Hill. Exit the car park at the bottom corner and join the towpath along the bank. The canal was originally constructed in the late eighteenth century to take goods to the growing spa town of Cheltenham, but was never a success. It changed hands several times in the first half of the nineteenth century, but in the face of competition from rail-

you will pass the southern meadows, to the left, which is part of the designated SSSI. At the second footbridge (2), cross the canal and turn right to walk back on the opposite bank. The main part of the Coombe Hill Meadows nature reserve will now be on your left. When you reach a wooden fence on the left (3), take the boardwalk to the Grundon Hide, where there are great views of the scrapes and wetlands: noticeboards in the building detail the birds which may be observed from here. Retrace your steps until you reach a small gate on the left, go through it and cross the meadow to rejoin the towpath (4). Turn left and walk back to the wharf. Turn right over the bridge (5) to return to the car park. Please note the walk must not be undertaken in times of flood as the wetland area is under water! Check local weather forecasts before setting out.

If you enjoy Asian cuisine, the Rajshahi Restaurant in Tewkesbury may have the perfect dish for you. The ‘Naz Special’ is a recipe created six years ago by Naz Uddin with speciality Chef Gias. This very popular dish comprises chicken breasts marinated in a fusion of secret spices, stuffed with minced Lamb and then slow cooked in a clay oven. The chicken is submerged in a mince meat sauce and garnished with finely chopped potatoes with coriander. The dish is served with a pot of rice and is best enjoyed with an ice-cold Cobra beer or white wine. Made you hungry? Then make a booking with Naz at the Rajshahi on 01684 273727

Commencement of works to upgrade Warwick Place play park in Priors Park Tewkesbury Town Council have begun community consultations on the improvement of Warwick Place play park in the Priors Park area of town. The council have put aside £19,000 from this year’s budget to begin improvements and this will be increased by a £5,000 Active Together grant secured by former County Councillor Mike Sztymiak. Working in conjunction with a local fundraising community group, Heart of Priors Park, the Town Council consulted with residents over the design. As well as attending fund raising events to survey local parents and children, an assembly was held at Queen Margaret school where the Head Teacher asked the children to tell the council what they would like to see in the park. Fifty five children drew pictures and wrote about their hopes for the park. The children were extremely thoughtful with their suggestions, requesting disabled swings and writing “I’d like a team swing because you can go on it with your friends.” Local businesses can also support the project by sponsoring play equipment and any interested companies are invited to contact the Town Clerk.

APPFEST 䡵 Chesney Hawkes

You know Summer has arrived, when everyone heads outdoors to enjoy an event and it then starts to rain. Revelers at this years Appfest tribute band festival, held at the Farmers Arms Apperley, stood their ground when the heavens opened, and got down and boogied. Undeterred by the rain the crowds enjoyed the spectacle provided by great tributes, including, Taking Care of Elvis, The Boss UK and the effervescent Chesney Hawkes, playing himself. This festival has grown year on year, under the stewardship of Dan and Jess Pardoe, and it is hoped that this popular event will continue to run and run.

OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild

WILKES’S ALLEY A victim of 1960’s redevelopment, Wilkes’s alley originally ran from the High St to the riverside. Most of it disappeared when the Hanover Court flats were built on Back of Avon. All that is left is a short section from the High Street through the front buildings to a car park. It now turns to the left through the cars to join up with the remnant of another alley and meets the Back of Avon beside Calico House. Charles Wilkes, tinsmith and brazier, took the front house (now Zitto e Mangia) in the first years of the nineteenth century, and until 1897, when Caleb became insolvent the Wilkes family ran an ironmonger’s shop there. In later years, it became a grocer’s and then a clothes shop. The alley was unusual in having had cottages on both sides, which meant that the dozen or

so recorded there in 1900 were not quite as cheek-by-jowl as elsewhere, but they were still small and insanitary. Tewkesbury’s first cholera case was here, in the 1831 epidemic. Concern with the water supply was a recurring problem until efforts at clearing and deepening wells were at last abandoned in about 1890, and a piped water supply brought in. Only one alley house remains, and

this is a substantial brick house, now housing a dry cleaners. This was not a labourer’s house. The alley is remarkable, even for Tewkesbury, for the variety of the life it saw. The people who lived in it saw triumph and tragedy, but much more of the latter. In 1814, Tewkesbury celebrated victory over France by hanging an effigy of Napoleon on a gallows opposite the

Black Bear and crowning Mr Lemes, a needlemaker from Wilkes Alley, as the eighteenth King of France. They cheered him back down the High Street to the Town Hall. He was King Lemes for the rest of his life. There were sadder things. In 1856, Mary Yarnell, the young wife of chair-maker Henry, was charged with murdering their four month old daughter Diana. The Wilkes’s Alley in the 1950’s, with Treens old shop child was starved to death. She was found not guilty, by reason of insanity. In 1916 another alley resident, Annie Taylor, was acquitted of murder in quite different circumstances. She was a single woman living alone. When she became pregnant, she told noone and not knowing what to expect didn’t call for any help at the birth. She passed out, and when she recovered the baby was dead. He was found in the Swilgate. Drunkenness was an

Gunner Arthur Pitman was gassed in 1917. His brother, Sergeant Joseph Pitman was awarded the Military Medal for heroism in the Middle East. Much later, in 1944, Corporal Bernard Burford, son of Ben,

CLASSIC CAR FESTIVAL BIGGEST AND BEST EVER 4805 people, 900+ classic vehicles, one helicopter coming and going – what’s not to like? Weather perfect (until it was time to tear down!). We were amazed by the crowd who turned up to see the film, twice as many as we expected and a great atmosphere - 200+. The festival itself was bigger than ever. The weather was ideal, there was a huge variety of disparate cars – in spite of running this event for ten years there are always more vehicles, cars and bikes, that we’ve never seen before, and the public had a lot to look at and lots of stalls to browse. The Rotary Ladies tea tent was a magnificent success, the queues were not too long, and as ever the cakes and sandwiches were perfect. We had record breaking numbers of visitors, plenty of whom were happy to take a break from the cars and the shopping to listen to our Continued P43…

THE INTERESTING STORIES BEHIND POPULAR DOG BREEDS By Nigel Sligh, Animals Only

FRENCH BULLDOG Ranked in the top 10 most popular breeds in UK over the last 5 years. Bull baiting was outlawed in England in 1835, so some ‘unemployed’ Bulldogs were bred with Terriers and Pugs to make them smaller so they would be more suitable as a companion breed rather than the previous sporting breed. These smaller Bulldogs became common in England and were known as Toy Bulldogs. During the Industrial Revolution, displaced lace makers emigrated from Nottingham and settled in Normandy, taking with them their dwarf Bulldogs. These dogs became popular in Paris and bred with the local ratters. A small industry grew from importing small big-eared reject Bulldogs from England, which diminished the stock of Toy Bulldogs. After 30 years this

large eared bred had evolved and were called French Bulldogs. Then called Bat Ears and now called Frenchies. These dogs became very popular in Paris within the artistic circle. These dogs come in all shades of brindle, fawn and pied (white and brindle), and need grooming only once a week. Frenchies are independent thinkers and thrive on human love.

Because of this they can suffer from separation anxiety. They make excellent companions and can live in town, country or flats with a small garden. Due to their shape, the majority of French Bulldogs cannot swim. However it is recorded that a surviving passenger from the Titanic was quoted as having seen a

French Bulldog swimming in the ocean after the ship sank. This dog was called Gamin de Pycombe, belonging to a banker who had purchased the dog for £150. (equivalent to £13000 in todays prices). Unfortunately it was recorded as the only French Bulldog to go down with the ship.

THE CHORAL PILGRIMAGE 2017 The 2017 Choral Pilgrimage centres around the themes of conflict and atonement. Palestrina’s mass based around the famous L’Homme Armé tune was immensely popular in the 16th century and its warlike nature serves as a timely reminder of the savagery of conflict, something which deeply affected Poulenc. Poulenc’s Un soir de neige, composed in December 1944, reflects both the inner feeling of peace generated by Christmas and the bleak solitude of another winter of occupation in France. An introduction from Harry Christophers: For the Choral Pilgrimage 2017, I will be exploring the legacy of two composers whose work, for me, represents the very pinnacle of sacred music – Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Francis Poulenc. Both honest composers, they never try to appear other than they are. Palestrina is the master craftsman whose work composers from all ages have attempted to emulate, while Poulenc’s music always bears a human face and he himself felt he put his best and most authentic side into his choral writing. Palestrina’s legacy and impact on sacred music worldwide is second to none. Composers through the centuries have studied and learnt from his gift for writing exquisite polyphony. Palestrina penned over 100 masses, and I have chosen some of the movements from his mass based around the famous L’Homme Armé tune. This song was

immensely popular in the 15th century and its warlike nature serves as a timely reminder of the savagery of conflict, something which Poulenc was deeply affected by. Poulenc’s Un soir de neige, composed in December 1944, reflects ‘both the inner feeling of peace generated by Christmas and the bleak solitude of another winter of occupation in France’. The texts by Paul Éluard, though secular, nevertheless possess a sacred tone. A parallel can be drawn with Palestrina’s settings of the Song of Songs. Originally Hebrew love poetry, written down possibly 300 years or so before the birth of Christ, these are texts which in Renaissance times were used in praise of the Virgin Mary, and were often considered too sensual and erotic to be read. But how important is a composer’s personal faith, when they are writing sacred music?

Palestrina spent his whole life in the service of the church and in his preface to the Song of Songs, which he dedicated to Pope Gregory XIII, he apologised, and indeed ‘blushed and grieved’, for possessing light and vain ideas in the past! Francis Poulenc was born and bred a Catholic but lapsed during and after World War I, preferring to live a witty hedonistic life in 1920s Paris where he took great delight in tweaking the noses of the powers that be at moribund establishments. Poulenc ironically enjoyed huge popular success, and never really looked back until he received the devastating news in 1936 of the death in a horrendous car crash of a friend and colleague, PierreOctave Ferroud. He sought solace in a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of the Vierge Noire at Rocamadour, and as a result he regained his faith. With his renewed faith, Poulenc composed

sacred music of unique quality that for me makes him stand out among more recent composers. The French musicologist and critic Claude Rostand once said of him: ‘In Poulenc there is something of the monk and something of the rascal.’ I rather like that, and it comes across in his music, especially in the way he sets his liturgical texts. Every sentence has a different inflection, a personal stamp – he’s telling us ‘this is what these words mean to me’. Poulenc and Palestrina lived more than three centuries apart, and their musical language is completely different. Yet they share

BINGO At the Northway Inn Wednesday evenings Eyes down at 7.30pm

a perspective on sacred music that is both intensely personal but also immediate in its expression. Discover more about

this year's pilgrimage in our exclusive behindthe-scenes trailer featuring interviews with Harry Christophers and some of our singers.

Boating fun for Chernobyl children with Severn Unit

Andrew Laskey

NEW CURTAIN AND BLIND BUSINESS IN TOWN Andrew Laskey is the proprietor of Laskeys Curtain & Blind Specialists. Andrew first started in the business over 30 years ago when he was just a young 16-year-old working for a large soft furnishings retailer. He did a 7 year spell in the Royal Navy before he picked up the profession again. Severn Unit MVS joined with the local sea cadets from TS Otter to help give some of the children from Chernobyl a great day out on the River Avon. Head of Severn Unit Nic Price said “We are pleased to assist the Sea Cadets by using two of our small boats to take the children out on the river as well as providing safety cover. Following the catastrophic nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in 1986 charities arrange for a party of children to visit the Tewkesbury area each year so that they can have a holiday away from the contaminated area.”

Pictured are some of the children from Chernobyl with MVS members Nic Price and Will Fish.

Local gym puts team through the paces Owner of Tewkesbury’s Gym n Tonic, Chris Warren writes in about a sticky mess that he and his team got into recently. Team G&T were at it again. We just completed a 10km mud run with a difference, the No Fear on Wheels Zeus Run. Nine of us had to pull, piggyback, lift and drag Danny in a wheelchair

around a very challenging obstacle course. The course was full of mud and many challenges on route. You had the choice of completing the obstacles or going round. Team

Gym & Tonic completed them all and so much effort was put in from Danny. From scrambling up mudded slopes, crawling across a rope ladder and up and over many many fences. Check out the photos

of the great team work all round to complete the course especially as the extra wheel on the chair broke within the first five minutes meaning the front had to be lifted the whole way round. By Chris Warren.

POSITIVE THINKING with local therapist and counsellor David Slater When I was a primary teacher I taught children their ABC, the foundation stone of their education, writes David Slater. In this column I teach you that as you move through life things may need to change. I teach you your CBA, the foundation stone of your future. What does CBA mean? Read on and discover. It has the power to change your life! Most of us get to stages in our lives where we are at least tempted to wonder if it’s worth all the hassle. Most of us have got through the bad times and have found a new happiness, a new success, a new freedom which we had not foreseen in the midst

C.B.A: FOUNDATION OF THE FUTURE? of all the turmoil. What has happened in the past has brought you to the point in life where you find yourself today. What you need to remember is that no matter what has happened in the past it should not be allowed to have any control over where you can go from here. In dealing with my clients over the years I have always encouraged them to bring from the past all the good things and to have the strength and courage and determination to leave the negative elements behind. I am saying “Close the door on the Past”. It is

best to learn the lessons that it may have taught you and leave it alone! It is vital that you attempt to stop constantly resurrecting the past problems because all you are doing is keeping them alive and it is that which is in danger of preventing you from moving forwards. The past does not create your future. It is you who does that and you do it through making choices. So it is your choices that potentially create the substance of your future. Okay, things may not have been good in the past. You can agonize over them daily and rue mistakes you have made BUT you can’t change the fact that they happened. Now is the time to move forward and allow yourself to move positively and purposefully beyond them. The past can be like an anchor chained to your leg. You are its prisoner IF you allow it to be so. When you let go you give yourself the chance to move forwards wherever you choose. Circumstances can change. Situations can change. People can change and that means SO CAN YOU. Each moment gives you the chance to shake off the past and take on board a new purpose and begin to create a new and more positive future. You have the good fortune to be living. You have the good fortune to have another chance. Each new day offers a

clean start ; a new start. See the bright future that can be yours and you will make it much easier to achieve. Really create that positive image in

your mind's eye. Stand back and look at your life, your strengths and your potential. Start to make plans - POSITIVE plans.
