Cain has Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user, with limited mobility in his arms and legs. He relies on full-time care to support him.

Communication, however, is not an issue for Cain. He uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device (AAC) to talk, as well as making sounds and gestures. with people he knows well.

Cain's carer Helen says, “Together we have discussed the many

challenges that disa-bility brings, not only for us, but others in similar situations.

“Cain finished at National Star College this year and loved every second there. He was given lots of opportunities, including a skiing trip to Andorra, and lots of days out. These enabled him to practice the daily living skills. Popping out to the shop with ease of access to places is usually not the case for Cain,

“Post-21 education, there is little on offer for people like Cain. There are some day centres, but the activities do not suit Cain, his abilities, or his wicked sense of humour!

“Together, we want to spread awareness of the situation that some disabled people face. Life just isn't easy for guys like Cain or his peers, and we are fighting to change that!

"Some of the places we visited this Summer were not suitable for a wheelchair, and we want to change that. Cain is 21 and loves speed! At one theme park we visited we were unable to get Cain on any rides; why is this? Why can’t amusement parks have areas specially designed that a wheelchair can be put on the ride and for that user to have the same fun and adrenaline rush as us?

The Lincoln Highway by Amore Towles

Paperback £9.99

This book is a delight to read, so please do not be put off by the page count of over 570 as it reads like a much shorter novel and now it is out in paperback, it is a manageable weight. "The Lincoln Highway" is the new book by the author of "A Gentleman in Moscow".

The setting is America in June 1954, and the story is of a journey undertaken by 18 year old Emmet and his younger brother Billy, aged 8. Their father recently having passed away, Emmet has been released early from detention and is delivered back to the family farm by the warden of the juvenile work centre where he was serving his sentence. The offence he committed is revealed in detail during the story.

He is greeted by his neighbour Mr Ransom and the Bank Manager, whose welcome home is fore-closure on his father's loan; hence repossession of the farm. The perfect excuse for Billy and Emmet to start a new life in another State, though Billy has his own ideas as to where that should be. Billy has discovered, hidden away by their father, a set of postcards from their mother. She had suddenly vanished from their lives when Billy was just a baby and the brothers had never heard from her. These postcards follow her westward route on the Lincoln Highway to San Francisco and mention a 4th July fireworks display. So instead of heading to Texas, Emmet agrees to follow this vague trail and the plan is to set off in his much loved Studebaker along the Lincoln Highway.

However events do not go quite to plan as the warden had two stowaways in the boot of his car, friends and fellow in-mates of Emmet from the work centre, who materialised after the warden had driven off, but having absconded, will have the Authorities on their trail. These two, Duchess, [the nick-name is explained] and Woolly plan to head East. Emmett agrees to take them to a local town so they can catch a Greyhound bus

go to plan. By various means the four make their way to New York where the plot of the book unfolds before the reader's eyes. To say more would spoil the pleasure of this trip.

Emmet and Billy are close; Billy himself is very bright, and is addicted to one particular book, a Compendium of Adventurers which he has included in his backpack along with a few essential items. Billy is a very organised individual and a memorable literary character. The Compendium ends up manipulating their journey, the events they experience and the people they meet. They even eventually call on the author, one Professor Abernathe.

Woolly is from a rich family; we of course learn what he did wrong to end up in detention, but he is unwell needing medicine to get through from day to day. Duchess is very caring of Woolly but not quite so thoughtful towards Emmet. We learn of his strange nomadic childhood and his thespian father; all of which has made him older than his years.

There is one other principal character Sally Ransom, Emmet's neighbour's daughter who has helped care for Billy, during Emmett's incarceration and becomes involved in the four boys adventures. Along the way we are introduced to some other characters and the book provides a vignette into their lives, of particular note is Ulysses who the brothers meet, but there are lots more; some good - some bad apples.

SIMON HEADS OFF FOR NEW ADVENTURES

After 29 years as the curator of the John Moore Museum, Simon Lawton has decided to retire and will be heading off into a new life of excitement and adventure.

Simon has been a huge support to the John Moore Museum, with both the collection and team expanding under his leadership.

It is also thanks to Simon’s hard work that the museum was able to secure two heritage lottery grants to improve the Merchant’s House and The Old Baptist Chapel.

Simon’s work stretched beyond the museum,

with secondments to other organisations within the Gloucestershire community.

Kirstie Bingham, of the John Moore Museum, said “Simon will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him, although he is not completely gone yet thankfully, as he will be continuing as our curatorial advisor for the next eighteen months.

“We all wish him a wonderful retirement ahead!”

The John Moore Museum has a range of events lined up for this month. On Saturday 1st

October, the Old Baptist Chapel hosts another Live Animal Event with the return of the popular Birds of Prey Day.

Visitors can meet the birds of prey up close

and personal. Learn about habitat, feeding and life-cycles of the beautiful birds on display including an American Kestrel, Barn Owl and Hooded Vulture.

There are morning and afternoon sessions, and tickets also include admission to the John Moore Museum and Merchant’s House.

“I like understand ing what happened, and why people made the de cisions they did. What dilemmas they faced. I’m curious about inter esting people and their mindset”.

Jemima’s museum visit tip - “The next time you visit a museum, pick something from one of the collections you really love, read the information about it, read it through twice, the first time just for the joy of it, the second time with a more critical eye. Study what the story is – the who, what, when, where, and why. Then, look for the story behind the story – focus on the larger idea behind the why, the unseen influ ences, the challenges, and triumphs. Connect ing to our past can shape how we understand our selves today”.

Jemima is really looking forward to her favourite exhibit be ing shown to the public for the first time during the Heritage Open Days (9th-16th September). Established in 1994, Heritage Open Days is England’s contribution

to the European Herit age Days and has since grown into the country’s largest community herit age festival and Tewkes bury Museum is proud to be part of this by pre senting. “Cold Winds of

the North and Antarctic Adventures” featuring a very special presentation of Raymond Priestley’s personal adventure jour nal that includes, diary entries, personal notes, and beautiful sketches.

Clearway Doors & Windows and their sister company CDW Systems have received an award from their main profile supplier Hydro Building Systems.

Having ordered 44 tonnes to date of “Circal” high quality recycled aluminium profiles, the Group have saved 378 tonnes of CO2.

Chairman Jeremy Phillips commented “It is really pleasing that in using Circal aluminium as much as possible we are able to make a contribution towards reducing our carbon footprint.

“We have been able to work closely with Hydro whose UK HQ is only a few miles away from both CDW & Clearway at Tewkesbury.

“This reinforces the sustainability credentials of aluminium. We are also looking at more efficient ways that both our factory waste and post consumer waste can be recycled.”

Updated Medieval Banner Book, now available

After many years of making and displaying the town’s medieval street banners the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society decided to produce an illustrated book that gave some in-site into their original 15 th Century owners.

This book has been on sale at various shops around the town for some time and the society has now just launched its 4 th edition.

The book will be on sale at three locations around the town. Allison’s Books, High Street and The Tourist Information Centre, and Church Street Gifts, both near The Cross in the centre of town. Copies are also available on-line from the Tewkesbury Battlefield Society’s website.

The society has always had an on-going policy of gathering more information about the people associated with the 1471 battle, mainly to add to this work.

This has led to twelve new historic figures, and their banners, being added to this edition. The society has also been fortunate in having been donated further information from readers of the previous three editions.

The original book was based on the extensive research of an Italian historian and genealo-

gist, Daniele Runggatscher.

He had taken a great interest in Britain of the late medieval period, and the Battle of Tewkesbury in particular. His work brought together information on not only the well-known participants in this battle but quite a few lesser-known members of the aristocratic and knightly classes of the day.

This latest edition is now 243 pages and has references to 179 different people associated with the battle, ranging

from a humble clerk (although from an armorial family) to the King of England himself.

LOCAL FUNDRAISER FOR MND

In a letter sent out to local businesses appealing for support, Jamie explains the reasons why he has organised an event for such a worthy cause.

“Like many people the last two years have been a strain on the nervous system to say the least.

“As far as my story goes, I had a major heart valve replacement scheduled for 25th March 2020, which was postponed due to the country going into lockdown.

“I became very ill during this time with Endocarditis which made my surgery more complex and I ended up in hospital for just over six weeks.

“During this event my mother was diagnosed with M.N.D. We watched her go downhill rapidly and combined with the lockdown and little help from the local authorities we plodded on any way we could. Sadly, my mother passed away in October 2021, she lasted just 18 months from diagnosis.

“This disease is said to be rare but in fact it is just uncommon with

around 5000 people living with M.N.D in the U.K at any one time.

“There is no cure so research is vitally important. It still very real and traumatic for all concerned.

“The research into what causes this dreadful illness is slowly progressing but more is needed to be done and with your help we can raise much needed funds to help the research into a cure for this disease.”

To fund raise, Jamie has organised a ‘Black Tie’ event, with tickets priced at £10 each. This includes food and live entertainment.

The venue is confirmed for Friday 11th November 2022 at Lakeside Bar at Croft Farm Water Park Bredon’s hardwick, near Tewkesbury.

“The live entertainment I have booked is a fabulous local covers band called Kickback, which is the band I play with (www.kickbackglos.com).”

The main event will be a raffle which is the reason Jamie has written to local businesses appealing for donations

for prizes, which need to be adequate to encourage strong ticket sales. There will also be a silent auction, with bids for prizes including Lakefest 2023 weekend family ticket with two night stay at Croft Farm, and lunch at The Dial House Hotel in Bourton on the Water with Jackie and Laurence LlewelynBowen.

The venue has already agreed to donate a percentage of the bar

take and the band are performing for no fee.

If you are willing to donate anything as a raffle item to help this worthy cause, please get in touch with Jamie Ball on 07855 484699 or email jamiekickback@yahoo.co.uk.

Tickets are available from The Bell in Tewkesbury, and Lakeside Café Bar at Croft Farm. All proceeds from the event will go to the charity.

Highway robbery at Probus Club!

The true origins of the 17th century highwaymen were revealed in a talk to Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club by Marguerite Collins from the Worcester Walks team. In addition to organising guided tours of Worcester, they have a team of speakers who give talks on a wide

variety of historical subjects related to Worcester and Marguerite’s talk was entitled “A Gentleman Highwayman” in which she revealed the origins of highwaymen, in that they came from disillusioned Cavalier soldiers after the English Civil War.

The particular “Gen-

tleman” highwayman and the subject of this talk was an ex-Cavalier soldier named James Hind, who was a loyal and fanatical Royalist and who was reputed to have rescued King Charles II after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. James Hind was far removed from the popular image of highwaymen as ruthless bandits.

He considered himself as a ladies’ man and would often dance with lady passengers having stopped their coach at gunpoint, rather than making a quick getaway.

On several occasions he would give back some of his ill-gotten gains in order that his victims could pay for their coach journey.

Despite his notoriety, he only killed one person. Having robbed a very senior military man, he rode off into the night pursued by Parliamentary soldiers.

Just as he thought he had outrun them, he heard a lone rider catching him up.

Hind turned and shot him dead but the victim turned out to be an innocent servant attempting to catch up with his master.

decided to send him back to Worcester this time charged with high treason.

He was found guilty and was hung, drawn and quartered at Worcester in 1652 at the tender age of 34.

This talk was just one of the many and varied talks presented to Probus Club every Tuesday morning.

Ticket to Tewkesbury

West Midland author, Philip Neale, would like to tell readers about his book, Ticket to Tewkesbury. Here he briefs us on the plot:

Who is the Mole?

When Julie Martin discovered a fifty year old love letter, little did she know that it would trigger a chain of events which had its roots in the death throes of Nazi Germany. Revelations in the secret files to which it led, threatened the very foundations of de mocracy in Britain.

The love story of Rog er Fretwell and Madeline

Colson weaves its mag ical course through the story and draws togeth er the forces of MI5 and “The Organisation”, in a struggle for the secret documents kept hidden for nearly fifty years.

George Watkinson, head of the secret service is locked in fierce conflict with Detective Alan Ma son, “The Organisation” front man; he discovers a mole within MI5, but

there could be others. Intrigue and murder follow in the wake of a race for supremacy from which only one winner can emerge.

As well as offering insulation, mulch will also reduce weed invasions, help retain moisture in your substrate, add organic matter which may improve your soil structure and generally make your garden look gert lush.

You can mulch with

all sorts of things. Most big gardens will use spent mushroom compost or recycled green waste because they’re cheap, have fairly neutral pH and are hopefully free of weeds.

These mulches contain very little nutrition so medium-to-long term

they are a just surface barrier which will alter the structure of the substrate as they ameliorate, which is mostly a good thing (unless you want free draining growing media). Home compost probably fits into this category.

The downside to cheaper compost mulches is that they can become hydrophobic and actually inhibit water penetration in very dry conditions.

General purpose compost works well in certain areas if you want a higher nutrient load, but it is comparatively expensive and needs doing when the plants are growing because the nutrition is very short lived and highly soluble. This is useful in highly productive beds like veg patches, cut flowers or showy flowering areas.

Bark mulches vary enormously in price but often last years. They have low nutrition, but act as a very good barrier to weeds and can deter gastropods too. Bark also allows rain through easily, but evaporative loss is minimal. The downside, in my personal view, is that bark can look odd in the wrong setting.

Gravel is fine to use, with most of the advantages of bark. The downside is the cost, the potential to change pH, the lack of contribution it makes to the ground (potentially a good thing though) and it is a pig to separate from your soil or fallen detritus if it’s not maintained. Gravel and leca are my preferred choice for pots as they allow plenty of air to get to plant stems without burying them.

Happy mulching!

MULCH!

Reader Anthony Stockman, concerned about the effects on tighter family budgets, writes to express his personal view concerning food waste.

FACT:- This country throws away 3.6 million tons of perfectly edible food every year – 3.6 MILLION!! Why? All because of ‘SELL BY’ dates and for Jo Public – ‘USE BY dates. That in any other country bar the UK, would be considered ‘Criminal Waste’.

The bare facts are –(as most of us know), that all of this food which Supermarkets and others sell, cannot be left on the shelf after the expiry date, otherwise prosecutions would

follow. There is such a huge ‘Failsafe’ margin on all perishable food these days, that virtually all that is thrown will still be edible for a considerable time after.

So – how to capitalise on this waste:- We always look at the ‘last day of sale’ for usually yogurts / Fruit corners / cheese / veg / meats –you name it and the advantage is, if it’s the last

day and it’s approaching closing time, that it’s always ridiculously cheap.

Now here’s another thing:- the magic fridge temperature is 4 DEGREES C. if you keep these items at the bottom of your fridge at that temperature, those products will keep for weeks, provided you don’t open them. The ‘USE BY’ date becomes almost irrelevant.

Now I know, there will

be many of you out there shaking your heads about this; I know several people who wouldn’t dream of eating anything that has passed its ‘use by’ date – and that’s the problem:- we’re blinded by this propaganda, which basically enriches the Supermarket chains, because they can sell you more food.

I will buy loads of this stuff, because I know it will keep for weeks if the

temperature is kept at 4 degrees.

To give you an example:- I recently opened a ‘Fruit Corner’ which I found hiding at the back of the fridge, dated 6th August, so a month old. A quick shake, peeled the foil off and it was absolutely perfect! My advice – if you’re unsure, is to use the ‘Smell By’ date. If it doesn’t smell right, then chuck it, but if it smells ok – then it

most likely IS ok. I’ve been doing this for years – and NO ill effects whatsoever.

Lastly – there’s a belief that you should never re-freeze any food product that has either thawed, or partially thawed. Well we re-freeze stuff all the time and it’s never been a problem!

Rising folk music star launches new record in

folk

Baptist Chapel

Oxfordshire-based Katie is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter and storyteller with a fast growing reputation in the UK folk world. Her sound can best be described as earthy, piano and accordion accompanied English Folk.

Her debut album 'The Toledo Sessions' is released this Autumn, and she will be playing songs from it at this special intimate concert.

The CD, which has already received glowing

Tewkesbury’s

19th November)

reviews in the music press, features Katie’s interpretations of traditional material as well as heartfelt self-penned songs.

Well known musicians who feature on the album include Reg Meuross, Phil Beer and Lukas Drinkwater. Lukas also produced and mastered the CD at Polyphonic Recordings in Stroud.

Katie explains the story behind the Toledo Sessions: “For much of my

childhood, we drove around as a family of four in an inherited,

dark blue Triumph Toledo, with Nan and Grandad often squeezed in too for good measure.

“It had a wooden dashboard, leather seats, analogue dials, an actual choke (remember them?) as well as a LOT of rust!

“It was a special car because in it I gained my love for singing and stories. Dad and I sang songs from James Taylor, Ralph McTell and The Spinners whilst on our way to collect Mum from late nursing shifts.

“When we had to make less exciting trips in the car, Mum would make up stories to distract us.

Hughie Jones’s song ‘Ellan Vannin’ was a regular favourite of ours and it captures perfectly this fantastic combination of singing and storytelling - I have recorded it as the first track.”

Katie is looking forward to returning to the Old Baptist Chapel, where she first performed in November 2021.

Her special guest for the evening this year (Saturday 19th November, 7.30pm) is the Worcestershire-based singer and songwriter, Mike Weaver. Katie also features on Mike’s forthcoming album. She will also be accompanied by Andy Nice on cello.

The concert starts at 7.45pm, with doors open from 7.30pm. Please note this a 'BYOB' event and that there is no parking at the chapel, which is in an alley off Church Street: Abbey Lawns Car Park is nearby and is free after 6pm.

Tickets are £10 and can be purchased online from www.wegottickets.com/event/547093 They can also be obtained from the John Moore Museum, Church Street, Tewkesbury GL20 5SN (see website www.johnmooremuseum.org or call 01684 297174 for opening hours)

Junior tennis club member Bethany Pye is flying high

She won the regional round of the 18U Doubles Play Your Way to Wimbledon Tournament and therefore played in the National Finals at Wimbledon, starting 9th August.

As part of this journey she was one of eight players invited to take part in a Vodafone Shoot with professional player, Laura Robson, which will be used in social media.

Bethany was also one of three players selected by Disney Productions to take part in a Player Profile for ESPN and Social Media, which will be released in the next couple of weeks.

In March this year she entered her first Racketlon Tournament, The British Championships.

Racketlon is a sport where one match involves a game of table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis.

Each sport is played to 21 points and the player with the most points at the end wins the match.

Following on from her

success in the tournament, Bethany was selected to represent Great Britain in the World Championships held in Vienna, Austria in August.

New business promises to help keep Gloucestershire cleaner and greener

Mr Charger Gloucestershire is a new business recently opened in Tewkesbury that can guide you if you are thinking of investing in an electric vehicle, or fleet of vehicles.

When it comes to onsite charging units you want someone reliable and trustworthy to help with the installation and to ensure it’s always in full working order thereafter.

Having lived in Tewkesbury for nearly thirty years, Steve is proud to be an active member of the community.

Which is why he was keen to play his part in helping to keep Tewkesbury and the surrounding areas as green as possible.

“It’s important to me that we ensure our environment is cleaner for the next generation and we begin to adopt sustainable energy solutions,” Steve explains.

“I have two young children, one of whom is

asthmatic, so I know how important it is for them to be able to breathe in clean air; not air which is polluted by car fumes.

emission Battery Electric Vehicles on the UK's roads, with 259,000 plug-in hybrids and 629,000 conventional hybrids (The RAC).

“Having suffered as a child with asthma myself, I recognise the value of being able to breathe fumeless air and want to make sure that future generations see the benefit of a cleaner environment. The solution to begin to impact change starts at a local level.”

Customer demand for cleaner driving and better eco-footprints is impacting hugely on the electric vehicle revolution.

Across the UK by the end of April 2021, it was estimated there were around 239,000 zero-

This means we are seeing an increased demand for local charging points to be made more accessible, as well as at private residences.“In Gloucestershire we have a number of accessible charging stations springing up, including Cheltenham, Gloucester and Evesham, but the pace is not quick enough,” said Steve.

“In order to support the people of Gloucestershire, I want to use my new business to make both private and public charging points readily

available, professionally installed, easy to use and kept safe with regular maintenance.

“It’s my passion to support my local community, as the UK transitions to EV over the next decade, in line with the Government’s cleaner air policy. Car manufacturers will be required to stop producing petrol and diesel cars by 2030, so the EV revolution is

something that will impact us all.”

Mr Charger Gloucestershire is part of a rapidly growing nationwide network, which offers owners of electric vehicles both charger installations and servicing.

Having established relationships with the UK’s most influential EV charger manufacturers, we are licensed to supply, fit and maintain the

right charger for your needs - whether you are a private customer, manage a fleet of vehicles or want to provide a public parking charging service in Gloucestershire.

With Cain’s love of life, determination, passion and wonderful sense of humour together we want to change the

TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW with John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society

For at least a century it has been difficult to find a use for it - in 1858 it housed the Grammar School, in 1914 it sheltered Belgian Refugees, in 1936 it may have been a temporary Library.

Beyond the arch are social apartments for young people.

Its origins then were

impressive. Many people mistakenly believe it was a Coaching Inn, but it was built in 1772 as the facade for a brewery - two building labourers were killed.

It was built by the Malt Distiller partnership of George Vernon and Charles Embury. His son George, indeed, changed his name to his wife’s, Tollett, in order to inherit Betley Hall in Staffordshire.

The house, however, was sold in 1811 to James Kingsbury, a successful hosier who named the house after himself.

He was involved in a stocking makers’ strike in 1814 and a £50 reward was offered to betray the writer of this threatening letter! One of his sons sought his fortune in Jamaica, owning a sugar plantation but died in 1832, gaining no compensation at Emancipation in 1834.

By 1871 when local streets were renumbered, it was partitioned into two properties and by 1914 the Fluck/Compton family

had taken no. 39 and Factory owner, Walter Jackson, no 40. Thereafter, it frequently

role - and it remains

SEVERN UNIT MVS ASSISTS AT BATTLE RE-ENACTMENT

Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service members were kept busy providing water safety cover during the weekend of the recent Evesham Medieval Festival.

Head of Unit Nic Price said “Despite the extremely hot weather the unit were able to maintain patrols of the riverside to ensure the safety of the estimated 35,000 crowd which were gathered in the riverside park to watch the re-enactments of the 1265 Battle of Evesham.

This was a responsible task of Community

Service and the Unit was warmly thanked by the Festival Director of Administration Bruce Taylor (pictured) for bringing two of their boats the 20 miles up the Avon to provide this important safety cover. The organisers have requested the Unit to come again next year.”

Luckily the unit did not have to deal with any

mishaps on the riverbank apart from retrieving a catapult but they did find a submerged 4 x 4 vehicle in the river which was reported to the police. It appears that this had been in the river some years but its position bacame more obvious with the very low river levels.

SEVERN UNIT HOSTS SPECIAL EVENING AFLOAT FOR BAVARIAN VISITORS

Tewkesbury based Severn Unit hosted a very special training evening at the begin ning of September when they were joined by a party of Garman visitors from the mar ket Town of Holzkirch en which is the largest town in the Miesbach District of Bavaria, Germany.

Holzkirchen has been twinned with Tewkes bury for over 40 years and Keven Cromwell who is the leading Tewkesbury Borough Councillor tor twinning asked the Unit if they could host this special evening afloat for the guests.

Head of Unit Nic Price said “We were de lighted to welcome the twelve visitors and we used four cruisers in cluding MVS Minerva to take them up the River Avon to Strensham Lock where they received in struction on how a 17th Century lock still works and actually helped with the locking procedure.

Everyone had the oppor tunity to drive and crew the boats before we all

returned to Tewkesbury for an excellent Fish and Chips Supper at the Nottingham Arms. We much enjoyed meeting Christoph Schmid the Mayor of Holzkirchen and the rest of the group which included farmers, engineers, an icecream maker and a number from German water res cue organisations. We made many new friends during this very happy evening.”

Many cyclists forget the adjustments which can be made through the saddle itself. The seat can be angled up or down and moved for wards and backwards. There is no hard and fast rule for what works here, but once you have the leg placement cor rect it is worth spending some time adjusting the saddle so that it feels comfortable.

One of the common complaints I deal with in clinic related to cycling is pain at the base of the neck. This is due to the position of the handle bars. They are often set too low meaning that when the arms are on the handles themselves, the shoulders are rotat ed forward, and weight and pressure is forced into the base of the neck. By positioning the handlebars higher, the weight is taken through the shoulders and el bows, and this can allow more natural movement through the neck and limit restriction or irri tation through this joint.

Although changing the variables in your bike set up may be time consuming and feel in finite, it is well worth the time as it may result in a more comfortable ride and reduce the chance of injury.

Thank you from The Roses

For the last two years The Roses has been through a period of huge change. It had to respond to the impact of the pandemic, continuing to open safely to deliver a vibrant programme of shows and workshops, host a range of creative community groups, and manage a backlog of events from 2020 and 2021. Alongside this it has grown its team, developed new partnerships and transformed its business model.

Throughout this un precedented period of change, the spirit of The Roses, creative team and volunteers has stayed buoyant and strong.

The Roses would not have been able to function these past two years, nor provide a port in the storm that was the pandemic, without the dedication, time and love of our wonderful volun teers. Approximately 60 volunteers help to keep The Roses’ doors open to the public and to pro vide a friendly welcome to all who visit. The Vol unteers are an essential part of the venue’s life and spirit, and the build ing truly comes alive be cause of them.

As a small gesture

of thanks, The Ros es hosted a lunch for their volunteers in July, with a surprise visit by the Town Mayor Simon Raywood. This fun and

To all the volunteers who support The Ros es so generously, the staff team would like to thank you for your com mitment and dedication. We also extend a warm thank you to all our vis itors for supporting your local independent thea tre and cinema. Every one at The Roses looks forward to sharing the upcoming seasons with you.

The triangle of buildings behind Frisby’s at the Cross, extending along the first few yards of the High Street and Barton Street, differ from the other properties along the main streets in that they are not ‘front houses’ to burgage plots. They are likely to be medieval infill to what was once an open market square at the centre of the town. Tysoe’s Court, which is between 5 and 6 Barton Street isn’t an alley, as there is no public thoroughfare. It gave access to the rear of the property where business facilities were located. In this case there were no cottages. There were warehouses and a stable, dating back at least to the seventeenth century.

The first occupier of the front house we have a record of is Nicholas Player, a cooper. The buildings in the court would have been his workshops and stores.

dynasty arrived, and the court acquired its name.

Charles Tysoe came from a farming family in Upper Swell. He built a thriving business whilst his son, Congreve, had to serve a long apprenticeship. Charles wasn’t a man to retire and it wasn’t until his death in 1891 that Congreve took over the reins. He only survived his father by nine years, though, dying in 1900 at the early age of 52 years. Though he had five sons and two daughters the eldest were only in their teens and not ready to run the shop. The business was transferred to Mr George Greaves, whose name appeared alongside the Tysoe name in a photograph from 1903.

4:30PM TO 6:00PM - 7/10/2022

Mr Player died in 1830 and No 5 was sold to Thomas and Sarah Bowers, becoming a grocer’s and cheese factor’s shop. Thomas’s early death in 1845 necessitated the sale of the business. The Tysoe

The Tysoes didn’t go away. The women retained ownership of the building, with Congreve’s widow Ellen inheriting it from her husband. She in turn passed it on to her two daughters, Grace and Muriel, so it really was a family business. They also owned, and rented out, No 6 next door.

Mr Greaves remained until 1906, when he sold the business back to the family, this time to John William (Jack)

tailer. The name Tysoe was synonymous with cheese in Tewkesbury. In 1919, when Mr Hawley of 93 Church Street died his grocery business was taken over by the Tysoes and became their second branch. Jack remained at the helm until his retire ment, in 1955.

There was no Tysoe successor, and the fix tures and fittings were sold, after 110 years of trading. For a while the shop remained as a gro cery. In 1964 it became Tewkesbury’s first laun derette, then a clothes

shop, an ephemera shop and a tattoo studio. It is currently being re furbished, ready for the next chapter of its life.

The old warehouses and stable in the court didn’t last as long. They were demolished in the 1970s.

At some point in the past the building was altered to move the en trance to the court from No 5 to No 6. This was done by creating a dogleg, presumably to create extra trading space for the grocery business. At the same time the

frontage was altered to extend the fascia over the shop-front and to fit a wrought iron bal ustrade along No 5 and the new Tysoe’s Court entrance. As the build ings were in common ownership for much of the past two centuries it isn’t clear who made the alterations and when.

In the current works on the building, evidence for the previous straight line of the court was un covered and the entrance has been moved back to its original location.

The balustrade remains, though, as a remind er of the shop’s life as Tewkesbury’s premier grocer and cheese factor.

The Tysoe fami ly name is not as well known as other suc cessful traders of the period, because they never sought public of fice. There were no Tysoe Councillors or Mayors. They were involved in town life in other ways, though. They were active in the cricket, hockey, rowing and bowls clubs. The regatta was always

celebrated with spe cial offers in the shop. Congreve was heavily involved in the early hospital, as a donor and official visitor and was an active ‘old boy’ of the Abbey House School.

Jack was a Special Con

stable and a founder member of the Rotary Club. The name deserves to be remembered in the newly refurbished court, though it no longer carries the odours of cheese, ham and freshly ground coffee.
