The Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Committee has announced plans for the annual Christmas Market, which will be held on Sunday 20th November.

An exciting itinerary is afoot again adopting the same street layout as last year, with over 80 market stalls and attractions taking over the High Street, Barton Street and Church Street.

Free parking will also be available within the Borough Council-owned car parks in Tewkesbury town centre.

The Christmas Market will open between 12 noon and 5.45pm and will be in the centre of the street this year, to provide better access to the town’s shops.

Attractions will include Father Christmas in his sleigh, children's fairground rides, and entertainment in the afternoon on the main stage by the Cross.

There will be dance groups and musicians

and a special appearance by The Roses Theatre Pantomime cast of Snow White.

The lights will be switched on 5.00pm around at the Cross, not at the Town Hall as in previous years.

A full traffic re-direction has been agreed to avoid Barton Street, Church Street and the High Street, roads which will be closed from 6am until 9pm on the day.

To help raise funds, special Christmas pin badges will be available to purchase in the town

centre shops from Monday 14th November and a raffle is being organised by the team at Andrews Estate Agents. Tickets available from local stores, or Andrews.

Tewkesbury Abbey will have an extra-special atmosphere when it opens its doors for its annual Christmas Fair at 10am on Saturday 26th

November. Entry is free. Over at Croft Farm, Bredon’s Hardwick, a Christmas Craft Fayre will take place on Sunday 27th November, from 10am-4pm.

Lots of unique stalls will showcase local artisans, with Christmas gifts, mulled wine and festive treats. There is free entry and parking, next to the Lakeside Coffee Shop.

Harlem Shuffle

It must have been difficult for Colson Whitehead to choose his theme when setting out on writing this novel. Few authors have won consecutive major literary awards let alone the Pulitzer. His choice was very good and far removed from "The Underground Railroad" and "The Nickel Boys", and his achievement is, that as we read this book, the streets of Harlem in the 1960s seem to come alive.

We meet Ray Carney, the proud owner of his own furniture store on 125th Street, happily married to Elizabeth with a second child on the way. He is not what her selfsatisfied parents wanted for their daughter, but love intervened.

Cash is always a problem, and there are local police and criminals who have to be paid off to keep the business up and running and protected. Ray has a second line of business, always kept as low-key and removed from his legitimate trade as possible.

This is fencing the proceeds of his cousin Freddie's thieving. Ray has connections and the extra income certainly helps Ray provide a better life for his growing family, and for his aspirations of improving their lives.

Ray has come a long way already, his father was a crook with very dubious connections, killed by the police. Though they grew up basically together, Freddie has maintained his uncle's links. Ray is ambitious and advances himself.

As the first section of the story set in 1959 moves into the second phase in 1961, Freddie's nefarious ventures endanger Ray's future, when he volunteers Ray to act as the fence for a heist on an up-market local hotel for wealthy black guests.

Things go wrong, and their lives become steadily

more complex and imperiled.

The secondary characters in this basically often lighthearted book are a real bonus. Be they villains, cops, local politicians or the staff that Ray employs in his business; they all add extra dimension to this enjoyable read, and some of their back stories and nicknames are inventive and fun.

The conclusion of the novel moves forward to 1964. America was suffering much self-inflicted strife in these early years of that decade. Colson Whitehead manages to bring the politics into focus, and the racial segregation and unrest run alongside the themes of trickery, revenge and selfpreservation. Always present is Ray's love for his wife and family, and his commitment to securing the future of his business.

Each of the three sections/years of this book, amounting each to a little over 100 pages, are self-contained, but the events of the previous parts form a connection throughout. The main protagonists and subcharacters come and go stimulating the action to make a fulfilling unusual read. This is NOT a Harlem crime novel, but it certainly gives the reader a real feel for that district, and the years in which the story is set.

TEWKESBURY WOMAN WINS PRIDE OF BRITAIN AWARD

Catherine North, Macmillan Fundraising Manager for the South West.

Carol was left speechless when she was surprised in her local café by a TV crew from ITV West Country who presented her with the award as her friends and family looked on.

Carol, a retired bank manager turned fundraiser, has been the Chair of the Tewkesbury Macmillan Fundraising Group for over thirty years.

In that time she has helped to raise over £180,000 for national cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support with her renowned Pudding Clubs, ‘Christmas Carol’ events and coffee mornings. She also organises

Tewkesbury’s Big Weekend and the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights.

Nominated by her friend Mary Butcher, Carol said of her surprise win “I'm absolutely gobsmacked, I had no ideaI never expected this, at all.

“It's not just me though, there are lots of people that help. I don't know what to say! Thank you so much Mary for nominating me."

“I've worked with Carol for 20 years and whatever I ask her to do, she says yes and she's absolutely amazing and very deserving of this award. Well done,” said

Following her win Carol will be invited to the national Pride of Britain awards ceremony

hosted by Carol Vorderman in London next month.

Macmillan does whatever it takes to support people with cancer to ensure they get the support they need to live

fully. But Macmillan rely almost entirely on public donations to make a difference.

That’s why the charity is so grateful to people like Carol who help ensure Macmillan can

continue to deliver the services that people living with cancer desperately need.

MEDAL UNCOVERED IN MITTON GARDEN

Tewkesbury resident Steve Perry was digging a hole in his back garden to plant a small tree, when he hit something hard in the

What he unearthed was a WWI medal, which had been awarded to Private Harold Crouch.

It was a complete surprise to Steve to find it buried in his garden. After doing some research, he managed to find out about the former owner Harold Crouch.

Tewkesbury Historical Society’s John Dixon, commented: “ The first mayor of Tewkesbury after World War II was baker, Harold Crouch.

“In 1945 he welcomed home the POWs from that war - it was most appropriate because he himself had been a POW in the First War, after being captured in 1918. He then spent six months in hospital, suffering from effects of poison gas.

“Harold Crouch was a conscript who married in 1916 and then was father to five daughters.

“A Liberal, he was first elected to the Council in 1931 when he came second in the poll. He died a year after his Mayoralty in 1947, aged only 54.”

The land Steve Perry’s house is built on at Mitton was used to accommodate Prisoners of War during the Second World War, and it is possible that Cllr Crouch lost his medal on a visit to the site at that time.

Steve said he was happy to pass the medal on to a member of the Crouch family, if they

would like it; failing that he would donate it to Tewkesbury Museum.

The Captains Cup (Nick Burke Memorial Shield) was held on Monday evening at the Cross Keys Inn.

Last season’s Champion Colin Lippett (Anchor 1774) went down 3-1 in the Quarter Final to Paul Woodman (Gardeners Arms), which was a reversal to last years match up.

Paul in turn was swept aside 3-0 by last years runner up Neil Evans (Bredon FC) thanks to a couple of dozen peg finishes, which he continued to do in the Final winning 3-1 against Graham Wills (Village Inn) who had battled through two rounds with 3-2 wins.

This was Neil’s fifth victory in the Captains Cup spanning back some 14 years to when he was Captain for the Royal Oak Crib Team.

November’s talks feature two very different lives, first a quiet Victorian reformer and then a rogue who became a hero!

On Tuesday 1st November, David Elder will deliver “He Went Round Doing Good” the life of Dr Edward T Wilson of Cheltenham. Doctor, public health campaigner, founder of the Cheltenham public library and museum. Early photographer, and father of the Antarctic explorer Edward A Wilson.

On 29th November, Tewkesbury’s Town Crier, Michael Keen Price, will recount the intriguing story of the deserter who won the Victoria Cross.

Both start at 7pm, Tewkesbury Baptist Church, Station Road. £3 inc. tea/coffee and genuinely homemade cake.

NEWTOWN W.I.

We welcomed 4 new members to our September meeting, who along with existing members enjoyed a talk by Ian and Cathy Barber about the pilgrims’ walk along the Camino di Santiago. After doing the walk themselves they wanted to give something back. Each year they volunteer to work in one of the hostels along the route for two weeks. The talk was called tea, cake and pilgrims, which was very apt as when they arrived after a day walking they were given tea and cake. They had some very emotional and inspiring stories to tell us, which we all enjoyed through tears and laughter.

We are a very friendly group and would love to welcome you to our meetings which take place on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Wheatpieces Community Centre starting at 2pm, the next one being on the 9th November, which is our AGM. Our last meeting of the year will be on 14th December when we will enjoy a ‘Dickensian Christmas’.

If you are interested in joining us, just come along, we would love to see you, or you can contact Sally Cotton on 01684 293550 for further details.

THE

Freeman’s Court disap peared in 1939. It used to a space between what is now the King dom Hall of the Jeho vah’s Witnesses and the back of Orchard Court. Apart from the ‘front houses’ the court contained six cottag es and a bacon curing

factory.

The court is named for William Freeman. He was brother of George, the lace-making entre preneur who had built the factory which is now North East Terrace, where he made his for tune. William was his factory manager. Some time before 1849, when alley names were made permanent, William had

bought the six houses, so the court was named for him. In 1853 he sold them to the next-door Independent Chapel for £10, so that they would have a regular income from the rents. This was a philanthropic, not a commercial, decision. Both brothers attend ed the chapel. Two of the houses disappeared sometime after 1851.

COURT

There seem to be no clues as to why. The residents of the Court were generally unskilled labourers who often stayed there for decades; a quite settled community. Things hap pened occasionally, and it is mostly their misde meanours which have been recorded. These are not often of a serious nature.

In 1913, Alfred Earthridge was fined for fishing with two rods when he only had one licence. In 1923 he ap peared in court again. This time he was a wit ness in a case involving the Nottingham Arms, who contended that the ‘Electra-Amuser’ slot machine they had in stalled in the pub was not primarily for gam bling. His evidence was that the optional small electric shocks it gave had a welcome thera peutic effect on his shellshock, and winning priz es was irrelevant. The judge would have none of it, though, and the landlord was fined £5.

Present

Alfred was, tragical ly, in the news again in 1937, when he fell off a roof and died. The circumstances caused some concern at his in quest, because earlier in the day he’d been hit on the head by a length of falling rainwater spout. He was replacing a tile on a house in Mill Street when the fatal accident happened. A week or so earlier, whilst the large German gun in Victoria Gardens, a trophy from the Great War, was be ing dismantled for scrap a heavy metal spring flew off it, hit the roof and broke the tile. Alfred was, indirectly, maybe the last victim of the war. The inquest verdict was Accidental Death.

Oddly, the residents were serial mushroom thieves. In 1927, Fre drick Curtis was caught in a hay field in Twyning, on his bicycle with a basket of mushrooms. He was fined 10 shillings for mushroom theft, plus 5 shillings for damaging the grass. In 1935 Ray and Daisy Hodges were fined 5 shillings each for taking mushrooms from a Pamington field. Three years later. Ray was caught again, in Aston on Carrant. This time he was sentenced to 14 days incarceration. Mushroom theft was taken seriously.

As regards Council intervention, the court had a quiet life. There were none of the prob lems which other areas had with water and san itation, nor any of the

HEAD FOR THE HIGH GROUND

As the highest point for miles around, the views from the tops are quite spectacular - and the proximity of the delightful town of Malvern itself makes this one of my favourite places to visit year round. Some of the ascents can be quite

taxing too! The route - which is suitable for all weather walking - starts in St Ann’s Road - a lane which strikes up into the hills from Bellevue Terrace in Great Malvern Town Centre. You can park your car in any of

Go up St Ann’s Road (next to the Unicorn Inn) - 1) and when this road turns left, keep straight ahead into Happy Valley (2). The ascent becomes steeper, and eventually turns back down towards St Ann’s Well.

At this point (3) go straight ahead on to a track which climbs upwards through Green Valley. Eventually you will meet the laid-out ride called the Lady Howard De Walden Drive. Bear right on to this track (4)

The path encircles the last of the high hills of the Malvern chain -

North Hill. Its hard sur-

face was laid out in Victorian times when visitors flocked to the town to take the waters.

The long distance Worcestershire Way now goes along this route. There are some fine views from here - looking north and, as the path strikes around the head of the hill, over the rolling Herefordshire countryside.

Follow the path all the way around the hill, and at the fork (5) keep on the left path to eventually return to a point above Green Valley.

Instead of retracing your steps at this point,

Distance: approx. 2.5 miles, steep ascent.

bear right and carry along the track until you reach cross tracks (6). Take the left path to descend.

Keep on the main track until you re-join the Happy Valley Lane. Bear right to reach St Ann’s Well (7), and the historic café built in 1813.

Carry on down the

lane which eventually meets St Ann’s Road. Turn left (8) and return to the town centre.

THE BEST TIME TO TACKLE MOSS IS NOW

I knew a Bryophyte expert at University and learnt a lot about moss.

Mosses grow at a small scale because they are sensitive to moisture and air movement; they sit in the tiny interface between the moving air and the surface they grow on. Mosses are fascinating plants and there are more species in the UK than most people realise (760!).

So, moss likes still air and moisture. It also tolerates shade, overuse of strimmers and lazy mowing patterns – look where your wheel marks are. Give these cultural aspects some thought before we discuss solutions.

You can buy moss/algae killers, but they don’t usually work in cold temperatures. Iron (Fe) is the best element for killing moss. Moss in lawns can be dealt with by using lawn sand. It has low nutrition, but relatively high iron content so it kills

moss without environmental side-effects. The iron hardens grass plants which makes them more resilient to winter abuse and it also stimulates chlorophyll production, making the lawn green.

If you time the application just before the grass stops growing, your lawn will stay green all winter. Apply lawn sand soon and the moss won’t get a foothold, reducing or eliminating the need to scarify.

I actually use lawn sand as my principal lawn fertiliser all year round and as dry infill in brick paths and also on a carpet tennis court. Both of these areas use other specialist sands, but suffer with horrendous moss which is easily dealt with using lawn sand and has long term results.

Lawn sand has the downside of ending up on stone work, so be thorough about blowing or sweeping to avoid little red rust stains.

I also use a liquid product called Moscure because it is easier to control in areas where I can’t risk staining. After trialling a small area to

test stain potential, I’ve also started using it carefully on tarmac with good results.

Localethical clothing company sponsors surf championships

A Tewkesbury-based online clothing company, Voodoo Turtle, sponsored the ‘World Championship Surf Kayak 2022’ event in Cornwall last month.

The event, which aimed to be carbon neutral, was held in Bude, from 29th September to 9th October.

BBC News covered the championships, and interviewed former world No. 1 Jack Barker, who was pictured wearing Voodoo Turtle clothing.

Founded by local man Mark ‘Uggy’ Albutt, Voodoo Turtle is a premium eco-friendly surf and urban brand.

“VT uses recycled materials and eco processes to create their Ecofriendly products,

including T-shirts, hoodies, high tops/footwear, rash vests, bags, hats, and much more’.

Uggy was inspired to start his business after getting involved with beach cleans over many

years, and seeing the damage litter and waste caused to both wildlife and the environment.

“I started thinking what I could do to make a difference. I decided on changing people’s mind set on clothing, to show that recycled/eco clothing can still be premium quality and have style.”

Uggy, who attended Ashchurch Primary and Tewkesbury Schools, comes from a local farming family.

Bell Ringers, mark the 50 year history of Tewkesbury School .

50 years ago, the 4 separate secondary schools in Tewkes bury were amalga mated to form one large comprehen sive school.

Over the past 50 years many of the school’s students have learnt to ring, mainly at Tewkesbury Abbey, Ashchurch, Twyning or Deerhurst.

Students and ex-stu dents have rung quar ter peals (around 45 minutes of continuous

ringing) at Tewkes bury Abbey to mark the 25th, 45th and 50th birthdays of the school.

The 12 ringers in volved this year span the full 50 years of

ness and the general public. Craig said, “Whether you need custom clothing, merchandise products, banners or signage, we can make it!”

Workwear is a specific service for companies, businesses, sole traders and anyone looking for custom work products.

Tewkesbury’s new thriving custom design, print and embroidery business, Infin8 Design and Print, based on the Croft Farm Industrial Park, plans expansion after celebrating their first year in business. With their expert knowledge and large range of professional print and embroidery equipment, Infin8 Design and Print are able to offer a variety of products and services to fit any requirement.

Family business owners Craig and Ruth Jones established Infin8 Design and Print in 2020 during the pandemic whilst suffering a total loss of work from their previous industries in music and theatre. Using skills from their creative pasts, Craig and Ruth began converting a disused storage barn into a professional print and embroidery studio / office space.

In recent months the business has also taken on additional staff to support the new found growth.

Since launching they have worked with Glastonbury Festival, Silverstone Circuit, Arcadia and Radio 1 Teen Heroes whilst also supporting local businesses and individuals. These include Tewkesbury School Shop, providing uniform for Bredon Hancocks school, with the intention of expanding to include more schools.

“Being parents our-

selves, we know children frequently lose or outgrow their uniform and we found the order

process difficult and often only online.

“We are bringing back a simple, local process

CERYS WINS TOP DESIGN AWARD

Tewkesbury School student Cerys Coxshall has scooped one of the top awards in a countrywide fashion design competition.

Cerys, who is in Year 12, was selected for the final of the Young Fashion Designer UK (YFDUK) competition, which took place in October.

At the end of last year Cerys and several other of the school’s GCSE students were encouraged to enter the competition by textiles teacher Mrs Cummings.

YFDUK attracted over 400 entries from 40 schools nationwide, and Cerys was thrilled to become one of nine finalists.

Her work - which was inspired by Monarch butterflies and the Mexican Day of the Dead - looked stunning, and she was awarded the prize for textiles design.

Ruth and Craig Jones at the new Infin8 shop

Having made contact with Dr Chapman, I discovered that we were wrong in thinking it was the precursor of the dentist at 40 High Street.

Dr Chapman had joined Drs Sheppard and Gray in Watledge Surgery but in 1979, by mutual agreement, he left this practice to establish his own, single-handed practice.

After a long and rather desperate search for premises, he was able to lease 41B, High Street.

His landlord owned the whole building and a small garage behind it in Quay Street. 41A was the ground floor and was occupied by Ladbroke’s Betting Shop – “a rather neat juxtaposition”, Dr Chapman thought.

His entrance was through a covered alleyway on the left of the building – now has a gate across it – and then up a newly constructed stairway at the back. It was on the wall of that alleyway that he discovered the faded sign, ‘Jesmond House’. That is the prosaic reason why the practice was so named.

He occupied the first and second floors of the building. The reception

and office area, along with a Nurses Treatment room were on the first floor and a further staircase took you to two consulting rooms and a waiting room at the top.

From the street you can see three windows on the second floor. The middle one is a false window. One can imagine that his patients had to be pretty fit to make it up to the consulting room - a determined lot!

The practice expanded and eventually he was joined by a former trainee, Dr Stuart Hutchison, who was just retired from Mythe practice.

In 1997 Dr Chapman retired and the name Jesmond found its way, later to Chance Street, maintaining the name until it merged with Watledge to become the Mythe Medical Practice when it moved into the new Devereux Centre in 2016.

Since retirement Dr. Chapman has turned his hand to writing (four novels) and composing a cello concerto, performed in Tewkesbury Abbey in 2005.

41 High Street had originally been owned and occupied by Proctor, a Quayside miller, bought out by Healings.

Later in 1927 it was deemed as making a viable boarding house but the frontage was occupied by Airfix models and then an electrical and paint supply shop.

In solving a historical mystery more are dis-

– what was the name of the gated Alley to the left of the building and why the single storey building survived the destruction of modest homes in Quay Street to make way for the railway in the 1840s.

Bass player Rich, who is Tewkesbury born and bred, has been involved with the local music scene for four decades.

“My first band was called ‘Split Screen Image’ formed with some school mates in 1983, said Rich.

“We were an alternative rock group inspired by the post punk scene led by the likes of Joy Division and the Cure.”

In the 1980s Rich performed with several local bands, before joining reformed Gloucester punk band Demob in the noughties, releasing three albums and touring the World.

“It’s been a long held ambition of mine to play at the Watson Hall, it holds a special place in my heart, I attended my first ever punk gig there

in 1980. Screaming Dead headlined with Tewkesbury’s first punk group ’The Lids’ in support, Happy memories!

“I approached Spunge our local Ska-Punk band to headline this Christmas Bash, as they have a large and loyal following, they were only too happy to play their first gig in Tewkesbury for six years.”

The concert will take place at the Watson Hall on Saturday 16th December, with tickets priced at £15. As well as Johnny Clash and Spunge, 4ft Fingers will perform at this all-ages show. Doors open at 6pm. Advance tickets are available from www.tewkesburytowncouncil.gov.uk/product/spunge

renovate the houses, and so their fate was sealed. Clearance and demolition orders progressed through their many stages and by May 1939 the houses were demolished, leaving the court area empty for many

years, with a gap in the street frontage, until in 2007 the incongruously-named Cotswold Cottages filled it, filling the space which was once Freeman’s Court for ever, and erasing the Freeman name.

Tirlebrook Primary School is 50!

The 1st October 2022 saw Tirlebrook Primary School celebrate its 50th birth day. It was an incredibly special occasion when Tirlebrookers past and present and the wider school community joined together to celebrate the one thing that we all have in common ... Tirlebrook!

With an estimated 800 people passing through the gates there was plen ty of reminiscing with former pupils, parents, families and community members coming along to celebrate.

The school were also delighted to welcome back so many former teachers, governors, caretakers, cooks, mid day supervisors and teaching assistants.

Families pored over the wealth of photo graphs, memorabilia, news articles, sports re ports, videos and audio memories of each decade in beautifully decorat ed classrooms adorned with children’s writing, artwork and craftwork, and science and tech nology reflecting life in each of the decades from the 1970s all the way through to the 2020s.

There was entertain ment in the form of mu sic from Lauren Howe, Erin Mills and Tewkes bury Town Band and cir cus skills for everyone to join in with - alongside a terrific high intensity show performed by the irrepressible Steve Kaos.

Further to this there was storytelling, inflat ables, children’s games,

pony rides and of course a birthday bake off. The afternoon was topped off with a Decades Dance

those in the immediate Tirlebrook community and the wider Tewkes bury community that

from the current Tirle brook students.

Simon Lockley, the current Headteacher commented: ‘Whether it was former or present pupils, staff, families, governors, volunteers or community supporters,

have made this celebra tion not only possible, but also so full of joy! Here’s to the next 50 years!’

wherever you looked you could see the happy smiling faces of the great and good of Tirlebrook. We want to thank all

The event would not have been possible with out community support so Tirlebrook Primary School would like to publicly thank all those school and wider com munity members that volunteered time as well as Paragon, Boys Brigade, Smith Recy cling, Patrico Ltd, Star bucks, Tesco, Morrisons, Cotteswold Dairy, Aldi and Co-Op for their gen erosity.

Shoulder pain and tension

Having shoulder pain when feeling under emotional stress can be very uncomfortable and perpetuate more stress. Simply trying to drop your shoulders and relax is not always as easy as it sounds.

Deep breathing can relieve tension through muscles which move the upper ribs and allow for articulation between the rib and vertebrae. This can result in a relaxation of the muscles around these joints and provide comfort from stress.

Sitting at desks, driv ing, and lifting heavy objects requires much movement and stabili

ty through the shoulder girdle. This can result in built up tension through the musculature. Trying to relax and let gravity take the joints to a more comfortable position is the natural and simplest method to aid tension through the shoulder girdle. However, this is not as easy as you would think.

In fact, if you feel your shoulders and neck feeling tight, tightening them more for five sec onds and then releasing with a deep breath can have more impact than simply relaxing shoul ders.

Once the body gets used to relaxing, this

process will become more natural and will be needed less over time.

Deep breathing tech niques have been used for centuries to establish relaxation and better function of the body. Stress and anxiety can drive hormones to main tain these conditions. Simple deep breathing can be very beneficial to all in maintaining and managing our stress symptoms.

Local landmarks revealed at Probus Club

Many of our regular talks at Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club feature historical subjects but seldom do we feature two different presentations about Tewkesbury’s own history.

The first of these was from Tewkesbury busi nessman and heritage railway enthusiast Ian Boskett, who gave us one of his inimitable, en tertaining and amusing talks, this time telling us all about the long-lost railway that ran between Ashchurch and Tewkes bury. His talk revealed many of the local land marks left behind after the railway was finally abandoned. Ian illustrat ed his talk with a large number of decades-old black and white images of the railway and he brought along several artefacts from the rail way such as station and signal box identification signs. It was fascinat ing when Ian identified many remnants of the railway which are hid den away in the under growth around Tewkes bury and relics that we might walk or drive past never realising the they were once part of a long lost local railway.

Our second talk was from local historian Ste ve Goodchild whose talk entitled “Alleys, Courts and Lanes” revealed the origins, history and the changes over the cen turies of these unique features of Tewkesbury’s

town. Steve also told us of the destitution ram pant in the 18th and 19th centuries with many families with lots of children living, sleep ing and eating in a single room with no sanitation

town, some that may be hidden away but others that we may use every day.

If you are a retired professional or busi nessman looking for something new to stim

or any of the facilities we take for granted these days. He told us of the exploits of the town “Scavenger” whose job was to tour all the alleys at night emptying the buckets of human waste which he then carried away on his cart and deposited on the local fields as a very effective fertiliser.

Quite apart from the fascinating histori cal aspects, both these talks from excellent and knowledgeable speakers gave us an understand ing of features of the

J-LO, the savvy, electric Citroen Ami makes herself known, in Tewkesbury

The Citroen Ami, an electric quadricycle, launched recently in Britain, Warners cars, in Shannon Way, were the first dealership to hand over an Ami to a customer.

The vehicle has at tracted much attention, the shape and the mi niscule size have made it a talking point amongst road users, making it one of the most unusual vehicles on the road.

It is classed as a Quadricycle, aimed at the urban commute, it has a range of 46 miles, with a top speed of 28 miles per hour, a full charge can be made in 3 hours and can be connected to the standard three pin elec trical socket that can be found in every building.

To gauge public re action, J-LO (her pet name, from her registra tion plate) was driven through Tewkesbury, to drop in on a few busi nesses on the way.

Response from the public, is universal, it can be described as, as tonishment, followed with interest, and usual ly a lively discussion.

44 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT
Local company Auto spares, in Barton Street are avid advocates of Green alternatives and have been electric cycle retailers for some time. Owners Mel and Mark Rose were delighted to have a hands on look at J’Lo and it wasn’t long before a small crowd had gathered. Mel said “I love it, it is just so funky, any in novations that help get us all to a brighter fu ture has got to be a good thing.” Staff from Studio Six ty Gentlemen’s Barbers m Autospares, Barton Street m Studio Sixty, High Street
Fitting carpets in the homes of Tewkesbury for over 30 years

came out and mobbed, J-LO, checking out almost every aspect of her features, whilst the ladies from neighbouring, First Choice Recruitment, wanted to know more.

Off she went to Croft Farm Water Park, where again, the vehicle was met with avid enthusiasm and a photo shoot was arranged by the business owners on the lake shore.

The tour continued an easy ascent of Bredon Hill, then on to Beckford, Alderton and Toddington, drawing interest from many.

Energy costs are rising dramatically but, at the time of writing, one provider is offering electricity for 7.5p per kWh for a brief period overnight (long enough to charge the Ami). That means a full charge of the Ami’s 5.5kWh battery could cost as little as 41p. That works out at rate of less than 1p per mile - almost as cheap as walking.

Ideal for the urban commuter, pop in to Warners and see for yourself, ask for Ami specialist Daisy, she has much more to tell you about this innovative vehicle.

Alternatively, call 01684 297575 or visit www.warnerscars. co.uk/citroen/new-cars/ ami.

You might also like to join and take part in Manor Players next production entitled `Regreased`. It is a musical comedy which transports the cast of the original `Grease` musical to a retirement home in England where an incorrigible bunch of old folk and their carers get up to all sorts of comical capers using the original `Grease` songs with a comic twist. Will Sandra

Once again Manor Players of Tewkesbury have come up with the perfect antidote for the winter blues. After their wonderful recreation of the goings at Maplin`s Holiday Camp in `Hi-De-Hi`, they now present a laugh-a-minute reproduction of two episodes from the wonderful T. V. comedy series `The Vicar of Dibley`. All your favourite characters are there, the chocolate loving vicar, Geraldine, the pompous, self-important David Horton, the `No..No.. No…Yes man Jim Trott, the airy-fairy church warden Alice Tinker, the boring Frank Pickle, the Alice besotted Hugo, the foulmouthed farmer Owen and the creator of manifestly awful sandwiches and cakes, Mrs Cropley. It`s all there. They will be presenting two extended episodes` A New Vicar for Dibley` and to get you all in the right mood for

September. Children learnt about the dangers of plastic bags to wildlife and our seas and rivers.

The event was hosted by Tewkesbury Rejuvenation Initiative and supported by Tewkesbury Culture, The Roses, Tewkesbury Library, Tewkesbury Town Council and Cllr Cody’s Division County Council funding.

Tewkesbury scoops Heart of England in Bloom Awards

The Heart of England In Bloom region consists of seven counties, including Gloucestershire

Hence it was a very proud moment when it was announced that the discretionary Environmental Award 2022 was to be presented to Tewkesbury Nature Reserve and Tewkesbury Severn Ham.

This recognises the incredible amount of progress that is being made on both sites and the investment that has been secured.

Tewkesbury in Bloom received a Gold Award in the Town section recognising the efforts of many groups around the town who work tirelessly on projects for the benefit of all. Separately The Hop Pole and The Anchor both received Gold in the Hospitality category.

Tewkesbury Bonfire and Fireworks will not take place this year

Sadly, Tewkesbury's annual bonfire and firework display will not be taking place this year.

The Rotary Club of Tewkesbury, who have run it for many years, have decided not to go ahead with plans for November 5th.

To put on an event like the Fireworks takes a huge amount of preparation to make sure all the permissions are in place, all the insurances, all the health and safety measures.

It also takes a team of about thirty to make sure all goes smoothly and safely - and Tewkesbury Rotary, post Covid, no longer has those numbers.

So that Rotary can put on events like this in the future, they'd like to hear from anyone active and public spirited who would be able to help them. Their secretary is John Halstead (halsts@hotmail.com), and there's no membership fee this year.
