What the Dickens will the Roses do without a Panto?

That’s been the question on everyone’s lips over the past few months, but thanks to a few enterprising individuals and a stubborn willingness to ensure that no matter what, the show must go on.

The Roses will be banishing the pandemic into Christmas Past (at least for an hour!) this festive season, with a scaled-down and laughed-up family version of Charles Dickens’ perennial Christmas classic.

The City of the title is London, the principle individuals, a mixture of Londoners, and immigrants, and an Irish nurse, Chrissie. She is, in many respects, the main focus of the story as we follow the events after a body, which remains unidentified and unclaimed, is recovered from the Thames.

The other principle characters are a police detective, Pete now retired, who was involved in the case, and attends her pauper's funeral where a TV documentary maker, Alan is filming the final shots of his programme about the case. So while the novel recounts what is known of the victim's life, it is much more about the lives of those people who become involved in the events of that fateful night, and the search for the truth.

The evening, when the death occurs, involves Chrissie as she is crossing the Thames at the exact same time, after storming off a tube train following a dispute with her flatmate, Marco. Her life is busy as she settles into the city; and her path crosses others introducing us to a selection of great characters. We read about her life, and that of Pete, the detective, and his wife recently diagnosed with

DELIVERIES cancer, hence his retirement from the force, and how their lives move forward after that fatal evening. The filmmaker Alan and his wife Francesca introduce the reader to the residents of a street into which they move, this small fraternity providing a distraction from the main storyline. Marco, the cause of Chrissie's close involvement in the main story, provides yet another strand to the novel. The core though is identifying the victim, and why did she decide to end her life; foul play never being considered.

Linda Grant is an accomplished novelist, and a great storyteller; she merges these storylines together but always bringing her reader back to the events of that evening on London Bridge. A good read for autumn evenings as the nights draw in. A novel in which to get deeply involved.

Roses receives lifeline grant from cultural recovery fund Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre has been awarded £248,391 as part of the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future.

The Roses is one of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support.

Tewkesbury town centre will be lit up this Christmas, with a virtual switch on taking place in November

by Father Christmas and his Elves On Sunday 22 November 2020 at 16:45, Father Christmas will switch on the lights in the Tewkesbury streets via a live stream on the Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Facebook page.

Viewers will be able to leave messages during the video for Father Christmas to read out while sat in his sleigh.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Christmas market that usually takes place in the High Street has been cancelled this year, but there are plans to surprise Tewkesbury visitors with a bigger and better event in November 2021.

Funding has been tricky this year and businesses have pledged money left right and centre, Carole-Ann Rowley from Kellands said, “We are delighted to be one of the main sponsors of 2020 Tewkesbury Christmas Lights Festival. Based in The Mustard House, in Barton Street, we shall enjoy seeing the streets lit up over the festive period, illuminating Tewkesbury at its best”.

Tewkesbury Christmas Lights committee member, Jack Boskett is delighted that the town will sparkle during the festive season. “The voluntary committee have

worked tirelessly behind the scenes this year to work out the logistics of putting up the lights and have liaised closely with electrical firm, Rifina to ensure that they can go up as usual for everyone in Tewkesbury to enjoy, providing that the funds are there.”

The organisers are overwhelmed by the financial support given by the businesses and from the people of Tewkesbury, Jack says, “Our JustGiving page is currently receiving donations with money flooding in via other sources, but we are still fundraising for £8000 as we need to pay for the anchor points to be tested this year, this costs us a significant amount of money every three years. We plan to thank everyone with an even bigger and better event next year, so watch this space, new plans are being put in motion as we speak.”

Tewkesbury’s ancient bowling green succumbed in late 1973 due, late historian Brian Linnell claimed, to an "exorbitant rent rise".

The Benedictine monks had made a good job of Tewkesbury's bowling green and it was widely regarded as one of the finest in the country, hosting regional competitions.

The earliest evidence we have is the 1790 Dyde Map and it was also advertised in the 1830 Pigot’s Directory. It boasted a “close and impervious Yew Hedge” as is illustrated (photo above right).

Until 1897 and the creation of the Victoria Pleasure Grounds, the road to Gloucester ran from Mill Street through the future Pleasure Grounds and behind the Bowling Green until it became Lower Lode Lane.

In 1886 as many as 200 people and a military band were reported on one occasion at the green.

The end as a greensward came in 1973 The Bowling Club moved to its present location on the Vineyards and houses were inevitably built on this historic amenity after 1984.

Aesthetically, the development may present a pleasing aspect to the town but what a pity its history was obscured by the failure to name it the “Monk’s Garden”.

BOOZY TRUFFLES GAIN NATIONAL RECOGNITION FROM THE GUILD OF FINE FOOD Every year thousands of food products from all over the world are assessed by some of the greatest food experts in the country for the Guild of Fine Foods. While Covid 19 delayed proceedings this year, 12777 products from 106 countries were scrutinised by the panel of 144 food critics, journalists and other food professionals.

Chocolat of Tewkesbury had 3 products judged by the critics and incredibly gained recognition for all 3. Their Brandy Truffles, were awarded a 1 star Great Taste award for delivering a fantastic flavour. 2 star awards are given to products dubbed as above and beyond delicious. Only two truffles gained this accreditation in 2020 including Chocolat of Tewkesbury’s Whisky Truffles.

Naturally Tewkesbury chocolatier Liz Dawson was under-

standably delighted by these awards but was over the moon in finding

out her Gin Truffles went even further, awarded a 3 star Great Taste Award for being ‘extraordinarily tasty’. Judges com-

ments ranged from ‘absolutely sublime’ to ‘a deliciously light white chocolate ganache and a brilliant kick of gin’.

So impressed were the judges that they have put forward the Gin Truffles for consideration to be the best food product of 2020 in their annual Golden Fork Awards.

Liz has said ‘I am over the moon to have all our hard work acknowledged in this way. Only 4 truffles internationally gained either a 2 or 3 star award so for 2 of those to be ours is really special. All 3 truffles used alcohol from local distilleries

which is really important to us. We would like to thank Charles Martell Brandy, Cotswold Distillery and Hussingtree Gin for their help and perseverance while we perfected the recipes.’

For food producers it is a dream to achieve just 1 award from the Guild of Fine Food.

Incredibly, Liz has achieved awards for 5 different products now, with the Guild of Fine Foods recognising her achievements by accrediting Chocolat of Tewkesbury as a Great Taste Producer for achieving consistently high levels.

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater “Are you ruled by the clock?” asks David Slater.

Is your life ruled by the ringing of bells and buzzers ? Perhaps that is how life should be if everything that needs to be done can actually get done. We don't want to miss the train, be late for work, overcook the Sunday roast. We don't want to miss the Six O'Clock NEWS or The Simpsons.......So much depends upon us recognising time.

But is that all that is involved? No! Time is the most precious commodity that we have. We can never get it back. We can never stop it. But we can use it sensibly and with love.

How? Just take a read of this and realise just how valuable and vital the proper use of time is!

It was a Friday evening. John had had a bad week at work. There had been loads of meetings, many arguments and now yet another late finish. It was about 7.30pm when he got home, tired and in a pretty bad mood.

His seven year old son ran to him as he went in through the front door. John pushed him away, roughly. He also turned aside when his wife came to greet him. Indeed he hardly responded to them at all until they were sitting having a meal together' Pete, the son, asked his Dad a question. It was an unusual question. A question that John took exception to.

“Dad, how much money do you make in an hour?”

“None of your business,” said his dad.

“Why on earth are you asking me such a stupid question ?” He was really angry and his voice was raised! “ I was just wondering, “ said Pete. “Please tell me how much you make an hour !”

“If you really must know, about £20,” said his dad. “Satisfied ?”

“Can I borrow £10, Dad, please ?” asked Pete.

“Can you what ???” shouted his Dad. “ I suppose you want to buy some silly toy or other.

Cant you see I am tired after a busy day at work ? I can do without stupid questions from you, you selfish, SELFISH boy !!

Now go to your room and don't let me hear anything from you again tonight !”

Pete couldn't understand why his dad was so mad. He left the table and went straight up to his room and shut the door behind him. He curled up in the bed and cried until he fell asleep.

What had he done wrong? Why was his dad so cross? He had only asked a simple question after all!

The man sat down. He didn't speak to his wife.

The TV was on but he

SOME OF YOUR TIME, PLEASE... wasn't really watching.

He realised that he was in a bad mood and had been unfair to his son.

He had never asked for anything before.

Perhaps there really was something special that Pete wanted or needed to buy.

After an hour or so he was far more calm and said to his wife, “ I am going upstairs to make

sure Pete is O.K. I know I was rough on him and I want to let him know I am sorry.” His wife simply smiled as he got up out of his chair and went upstairs to his son's room.

He tapped on the door and then opened it a crack and said quietly “Are you asleep, Pete ?”

Pete had been awake a little while and said, “

No, Dad. I am awake !” “ I am sorry I shouted at you earlier. It was wrong of me. I had a bad day at work and I was so wrong to take it out on you. I am truly sorry.”

He put his hand in his pocket, took out his wallet and taking out a note said “ and here's that £10 that you asked for!”

Pete sat bolt upright in bed, beaming from ear

to ear. “Oh thank you, Dad. Thank you !!! Now I can do it !!!”

He put his hand under his pillow and took out an envelope which had money in it - £10 in fact.

Seeing this money his dad started to feel anger rising in him again. How dare his son ask him for money when he already had some ?!

“Why have you asked

me for money when you have some in that envelope? “ he asked, some of his anger seeping through.

“Because I didn't have enough, but now I do.

Dad, now I have got £20.

Can I buy an hour of your time?”

His dad was speechless, but I assure you the message got home!

Almost continuous flooding on the Avon during last winter kept the Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Service busy but just as they were preparing for the new boating season in the Spring we all went into lockdown!

Eventually when lockdown was lifted Unit members managed some limited activities afloat but the Summer has not been without incidents!

In addition to resuming their regular river patrols members gave assistance to Avon Navigation Trust such as by cleaning signage, cutting back overhanging trees and clearing weeds from the walls of Avon and Strensham Lock.

They were called out numerous times to help stranded boaters whose boats had broken down (probably caused by many months of being laid up) and they needed towing back to their moorings.

One early August morning they attended an incident at Abbey Mill sluice as someone had cut the mooring lines of a cruiser on the Town moorings and set it adrift.

Fortunately a neighbouring boat owner spotted it and tied it up to a fishing platform before any damage was done. Severn Unit were then called out to tow it

back to safety.

From a wooded area above Strensham Lock reports were received that boats were in serious danger from being damaged by a number of half submerged tree trunks that were difficult to see and the Unit was asked if they could help as Avon Navigation Trust were busy attending to an emergency further up the navigation.

As the Unit did not have any marker buoys they used a number of their own large white fenders (both round and long ones) to warn boaters of the underwater danger in the navigation but a week later it was reported that all these had disappeared!

The Unit went up again to investigate and discovered that all the ropes to the fenders had been cut and the fenders stolen!

Head of Unit Nic Price said “You could only get out to these marker buoys by boat and it is difficult to understand why fellow boaters should do such a stupid thing. Clearly these fenders marked underwater hazards which could have done serious harm to any boats that had the misfortune to hit them and now the Unit, which is a charity, has now also lost a set of valuable fenders.”

Callous thieves struck the Unit again when in August both their 15hp Outboards (a Suzuki and a Tohatsu) were stolen now leaving them unable to operate their

Severn Unit cruiser “Minerva” with their Rigiflex dinghy (still complete with its outboard at that time) preparing marker fenders to warn of underwater obstructions above Strensham Lock small boats which are vital to the Unit.

At times of flooding when people are stranded on boats and badly need assistance our

small boats are the only ones able to get under King John’s Bridge and provide much needed support and help to take them safely to dry land.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GARDENS Did you know that gardens now represent the best chance for wildlife in a wider landscape that has been homogenised by intense management?

It’s an unfortunate irony that the small patches around our homes (that contain mostly non-native species) are more biodiverse than most of our countryside!

I’m the Head Gardener on a large estate and I have a degree in Ecology; ecological principles underpin everything I do, because ecology is about understanding relationships.

Let’s return to basics.

If we want to bring wild animals or plants into an area, we may need to give them somewhere to nest, hibernate, hide, breed, feed, hydrate, grow, court, mate or hunt. A garden does not need to provide all of these things for all species, but they are good guiding principles to think about. Bird feeders are a good start, sources of water are very good, but maybe we need to think about more than just one of a species’ needs?

It is easy to make our gardens better for wildlife, but some commonly offered solutions are far harder to achieve than we might be led to believe. Wildflowers are very trendy, but how many of us have struggled to establish them?

How many of us have put up insect hotels or bird boxes, only for them to remain empty?

How many of us have watched our lawns go brown each summer because we can’t turn a hose onto them, or been frustrated at weed incursions? How many of us have watched our roses suffer pests and diseases and wasted time introducing chemicals that don’t seem to work?

Each month I will discuss practical gardening, based on almost 20 years of professional

Tim Hoskins experience. This won’t be a monthly guide to what needs doing in your garden as you can find that elsewhere. I will instead focus on a specific area and try to give gardeners an understanding of underlying principles. In time I hope to equip you with the skills to explore, gain knowledge and find answers on your own.

Mostly, I hope I can raise awareness of the environmental impact of gardening and the vital role our gardens play in sustaining our diminishing wildlife.

As a family we know only too well what its like to fall on hard times especially at Christmas so we pledged to buy 1 toy a month to donate to a less fortunate child.

After sharing this idea on Facebook Seren’s Wish was born and we took hundreds of gift donations over the year.

The gift pile grew and grew, and we needed to rent a storage unit to house all the gifts safely.

Christmas 2019 saw our first Seren’s Wish Christmas mission come together. With the help of the general public, schools and local businesses we were able to fulfil 48 local children’s Christmas lists and give

them each a present sack filled to the brim with handpicked gifts. These children would have otherwise received very little or nothing at all from Santa on Christmas morning. We also donated 12 shopping bags full of gifts to Tewkesbury foodbank for their Christmas blessings parcels and we sent toys to Bristol children’s hospital where 3 local children were receiving cancer treatment.

We achieved this purely with the generosity of donations and through our fundraising efforts on our Facebook page. Seren even cut off all her hair to raise money. We are not yet a

established in 2005

registered charity and we do not receive any financial support from the government or council which means any

Seren hard at work support we generate is extremely important and one day we will become a viable charity. We are expecting more than double the referrals we had last year due to Covid 19 making life exceedingly difficult for families financially.

Seren’s Wish may be running a little differently from last year and be more of a challenge with Covid 19 restrictions in place but we are more determined than ever to make a difference to families in our local area this Christmas.

We are deep into autumn and life in a beehive is quite different now.

Compared with spring and summer, there are very few plants in flower at this time of year and consequently less food available for foraging bees.

All the hard work during the summer months is to produce and store enough honey to feed the hive through winter.

As there is less work to do during these colder months the bees live longer, so there is no need for the Queen to lay so many eggs. It follows then, that there is less feeding and nursing to do, the main task being to keep warm, so much of their day is spent huddling around the Queen and shivering to produce heat.

Unfiltered honey from Lizzie Hive The hives at home: In the Elizabeth hive, Queen Lizzie has been so prolific at populating that we have had to increase the size of the hive by adding an extra ‘floor’ on top. She has made good use of this spare room by building up the bee numbers, and in turn the workers have been industrious and produced plenty of honey to see them through the lean times. Honey production seemed to step

By Michael Protheroe up in the last couple of months, helped in no small part by vast quantities of ivy growing in the nearby hedgerows.

Flowering Ivy Ivy is a late flowering plant making it hugely important to honeybees.

Unfortunately for us, honey made from ivy is not very palatable to people. For these reasons’ beekeepers tend to harvest honeycomb from hives by the end of August, and anything made after that is all for the bees.

Margaret hive has not been quite as successful but considering that all the hives are new this year, we are more than happy with their progress.

Every few days we have been supplementing Margaret hive’s diet with a sugar syrup. They get through 1kg of sugar surprisingly quickly!

Anne hive is the newest and came about when Queen Lizzie fled the nest and two replacement queens emerged from their cells at about the same time.

Normally, when two or more queen cells are present the first one to emerge would seek out any other queen and kill them before they hatch.

If more than one queen manages to hatch at the same time they would fight to the death.

During one hive inspection it was noticed that the hive was very animated, and two queens were found.

One became Queen Lizzie II and the other was named Queen Anne and given a modest new home with a couple of frames of brood and some bees. Over the months this has grown to a hive of respectable

size.

One pleasant surprise was that, despite the hives all being young, we have been able to collect a modest amount of honey, and may even have some for sale in the shop, Tewkesbury Cards & Gifts, in the next few weeks. The only delay being producing a suitable label with correct information, something we must turn our attention and should hopefully be complete by the time of publication.

FROM BRIDGE TO LOCK This stroll along the Avon from the car park by Eckington Bridge passes through the attractive village of Birlingham and wanders down to the little river island by Nafford Lock, where you can take time out to watch the pleasure craft on one of Britain’s loveliest waterways.* This is a ‘there and back again’ walk, which also offers an opportunity to explore charming Birlingham, a village often bypassed by tourists.

The starting point is Eckington Wharf Car Park (on the B4080) where there is also a riverside picnic area.

Leave the car park and cross the red sandstone bridge with care, then go through a kissing gate on the right (1).

You are now on the common land known as

䡵 Nafford Lock

Asham Meadow; the most picturesque route is to follow the path along the river until you

come to a bend known as the Swan’s Neck.

As the river loops round, look for a lane at the edge of some trees (2) and turn right along it. The lane bears left and reaches a T junction (3). Turn right and follow the lane until it passes some houses on the right and emerges on to a road in the village of Birlingham.

Turn right (5) into Grange Road and continue to the junction with Berwick Lane (6). Bear right along the lane, passing a farm on your right.

Eventually the lane becomes a rough track, which is susceptible to flooding after heavy rain and in winter months.

At the end of the lane you will reach the entrance to the Gwen Finch Nature Reserve (7). This wetland area (not normally open to the public), is a habitat for a variety of birds, voles, and even otters.

Carry on along the lane at the edge of the trees, and over the fast flowing Berwick Brook.

Pass the entrance to the John Bennet Nature Reserve on your left, keep straight on and look for another bridge on your right (8) which goes over a weir.

Cross with care. You are now on an island in the middle of the Avon.

Bulbtober 2020 Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust got in touch with me to help implement 'Bulbtober 2020’ their scheme covering Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Gloucester, writes Cate Cody.

They have provided organisations (where there are young people 11-24), with 300 bulb packs of crocus, snake’s head fritillary (pictured above) and daffodil.

The scheme aims to engage and encourage young people to get involved with wildlife and their local community by planting the bulbs; it will of course also help early pollinators in the spring when they need nectar and pollen sources for energy after hibernation.

Areas and organisations that will benefit here in Tewkesbury include The Boys’ Brigade, Tewkesbury Scouts, Abbey View School, Victoria Gardens, Alderman Knight School, the Abbey grounds, Tewkesbury School, Warwick Place and Tewkesbury Park Estate.

The discovery of a rare hybrid grass has recently attracted some interest from renowned botanist Professor Clive Stace, author of the New Flora of the British Isles.

The grass was discovered by Clive Lovatt who is the Gloucester-shire County Recorder for the British Botanical Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

In St Mary’s Lane there lives a mouse, with its own tiny doorway into one of the cottages.

The owner of the house, Dee Keene, told us that inside her cottage there are many old beams, filled with nooks and crannies.

She decided to give a toy Mouse a home filling one hole, but why stop there?

SLIPPED DISC This condition can be a very painful and prolonged injury. The discs sit between the vertebrae and provide cushioning for the spine and help to provide the ability to move the spine in many different ways.

When a disc is “slipped”, “bulged” or “prolapsed”, part of the disc is shifted from it normal position normally either backwards or to the side and backwards.

Depending on how much of the disc which is moved this can have a knock-on effect to irritation of nerves, ultimately causing pain in a wider area.

For example, the most common type of disc prolapse is posterior-laterally of the L5/S1 disc.

This means the disc of the last vertebrae in the spine moves back and to the side. This often will then touch part of the sciatic nerve and result in pain going down the back of the leg. Disc prolapses can, in theory, occur at any level of the spine but lower back is the most common shortly followed by the neck.

A disc cannot be “put back in”. It is like trying to get toothpaste back into the tube or jam back into a doughnut. It cannot be done. However, the body is a remarkable and dynamic unit and over time the disc will harden and, if a minor prolapse, the disc will be smoothed away by the body.

Of course, this means that disc height is lost and although once at this stage pain levels will be reduced, this does not mean that the problem has gone. The body is now left with a change in its mechanics but a brain and routine which will move it in its original mechanical way.

Phil (Shep) Shepherd, Engineer Many local people may remember the engineering workshop in St Mary’s Lane, the proprietor was the late Phil Shepherd, precision engineer.

Phil, known to many in the town, grew up in Cheltenham and was born into a family with ten siblings.

He came to Tewkesbury in 1980 and started Shepherd Engineering, manufacturing many different components for a variety of clients, including, forensic laboratory, Foster and Freeman in Evesham.

Scarecrow Fundraiser for Food Bank Villagers in Aston on Carrant recently held a Scarecrow Comptetition to raise funds for Tewkesbury Food Bank.

A spokesperson said “Thank you all so much for making the Scarecrow Competition so much fun.

The “scarecrows” were amazing and we are very grateful to Bill and Joan Crump for undertaking the impossible task of judging them. It was good to see so many of you out in the village. Thank you for all your donations. We were able to take £275 and lots of food to Tewkesbury Food Bank.

Hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did. This was a very impromptu idea to cheer us up and an excuse to meet up in the village.

21 AND GOING STRONG… alison's bookshop in Tewkesbury's High Street has just celebrated 21 years of trading, though with a slight interruption this spring with the shutdown.

However reopening on June 15th as soon as HMG allowed, and since then Owner/Manager, Ian Nicholson has been grateful for the kind messages received over these recent months.

“It was a relief to be allowed to reopen our doors, and the support of our regular customers has been fantastic” said Ian when asked about how trade has been.

Being Tewkesbury’s first Independent bookshop for many years; the business has grown and adapted to suit the local

market. However during these years the number of bookshops in the UK has reduced by over 1,000 outlets; so Tewkesbury has bucked a national trend. alison’s offers a wide choice of books and the stock, regularly well over 15,000 books, is bigger than many multiple shops carry on their shelves in towns much larger Tewkesbury. It is this wide choice which brings regular customers many miles to visit alison's and the other gems found in Tewkesbury.

“We are a stocking bookshop” said Ian, “by which I mean that we carry a much larger stock than many small market town competitors, which makes us somewhat unique.”

“As a town we have

so much to offer, that is why people travel, in some cases over 50 miles to visit us. We are all lucky that Tewkesbury can offer such a wide diversity of Independent shops. Sorely missed but never forgotten It is very sad to note that the former owner of the Abbey Mill Restaurant Margaret White passed away very peacefully during the summer. She had been in poor health for a number of years, spending the remainder of her days in a beautiful nursing home being looked after with great care and attention.

The Abbey Mill was famed for its Medieval Banquets and Bavarian Nights which Margaret ran with passion and efficiency, catering as they did for huge numbers of party-goers.

Away from her own business and as a founding member of the Tewkesbury in Bloom and Christmas Lights committees, Margaret was an energetic fundraiser in support of these causes, her commitment always helping to secure donations and make such events possible.

She was also very committed to fundraising for Tewkesbury Hospital, raising lots of money over the years.

We are sure she would want the excellent care she received there in the latter stages of her life to be recognised.

Before Margaret retired from running the Abbey Mill, she was for many years an enthusiastic member of the Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in founding the Tewkesbury Business Breakfast group.

She was always striving to help Tewkesbury to be the best it could possibly be, and was constantly full of ideas and plans.

She went on to be awarded the Pride of –––––––––––––––––––– “Lovely to see Natasha and enjoy a great traditional Italian meal again at Zitto e mangia. The dining area is comfortable and feels very safe,looking forward to the next meal already.”

We invited Clive earlier in the year to undertake a botanical survey for us with a focus on the meadow areas of the Reserve to help us understand the effectiveness of current management techniques in improving biodiversity and to support longer term monitoring.

The special grass he found is a hybrid of Common Couch and Meadow Barley, originally described in Denmark in 1925, which Southern Hawker Dragonfly in the Reserve has only been recorded in small quan- (Pic: James Hargreave) tities in five other UK locations.

Tewkesbury Nature Reserve’s grassland habitats are unsurprisingly, given their additional importance in dispersal of flood water, referred to as ‘floodplain meadows’. These meadows are unique and support a complex community of plants and animals. This year’s botanical survey recorded 65 unique species of plant on just the southern meadow, including species that are in decline nationally.Over 200 species of plant were recorded on the Reserve overall.

At this time of year, it is hard to imagine that a flooded field has much to offer wildlife. However, spend some time watching quietly and you will notice some of the year round residents like swans, herons, kingfishers and ducks are still there and have been joined by visitors like green sandpipers, teal and fieldfare who rely on the Reserve for safety and food over the winter or on their migration journeys.

Many wildflowers do not like conditions that are too fertile and prefer poor soil. Cutting in mid June might seem strange when many flowers are still in bloom, but plants quickly recover and re-flower allowing some of the smaller plants to benefit from the summer sunshine growth.

From mid summer onwards, sheep appear on the meadows, joining some of the livestock in other parts of the Reserve which help us manage vegetation. Grazing of livestock is another important traditional management tool maintaining the regrowth of grass start and preventing more competitive plants taking over.

Trampling hooves help embed seeds for the following year and sheep manure allows the return of just the right balance of nutrients to support this growth.

By the time to winter floods come then everything is set for the following year. Flood waters bring further minerals and nutrients to boost the meadow in the spring and the cycle begins again.

Boats looking blooming marvellous The flower boats around the Mythe area have been looking a little neglected recently with peeling paint, which was spotted by Tewkesbury decorator Cameron Pay. Cameron runs a property maintenance business, Calm Services, offering painting, gardening and handyman jobs - and has come to the rescue of Tewkesbury in Bloom giving the fiberglass boats a lick of fresh blue paint.

The two boats, one situated by the Mythe Bridge and the other at the Mythe water treatment plant on the Mythe Road provide a colourful all year round display welcoming visitors from the A38 into the north end of the town.

“We are so grateful to Cameron for his efforts.

He's done such a good job. There was a lot of preparation to do including, stripping the loose paint as well as a few repairs before the top blue coat could be added to give a really professional finish,” comments Shelby Powell.

The paint was supplied by the Handyman Centre run by Brian Reeve who is a founder member of Tewkesbury in Bloom.
