BOOK OF THE MONTH with Alison’s Bookshop & Music Room

Cahokia Jazz by

Francis Spufford here offers his readers an immersive story. He is best known for his first novel "Golden Hill" but has a distinguished career as a writer of nonfiction.

Cahokia was the largest urban settlement in North America long before Columbus landed but had been deserted years before. The Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site can be found in Illinois. Francis Spufford uses the name as the location for his fictitious city for this novel set in 1922. The book even offers a detailed street plan so we the reader can understand the layout of the land and how that influences the factions within the city that vie against each other.

A gruesome murder is the opening scene to where two detectives are sent to conduct the investigation. The victim, an uninspiring clerk, Klan member and recent arrival in town. The detectives are old buddies and veterans of WW1; Phin Drummond and Joe Burrow. It is Burrow who is the central character in the story and where the music, which permeates this book, is focused. Joe is an erstwhile jazz pianist, and a good one as is shown when is he is tempted to play with a band during one night of the investigationintrigued? Francis Spufford displays a love and knowledge of jazz which adds an extra dimension to this crime story which is never really a who-dunnit but, as ever in America, has strong racial undertones, Cahokia is inhabited by three factions.

The takouma, a native of the continent; the tak-

lousa, a person of African ancestry; and the takata, one of European origin. How these three inter-react with the menace of the Ku Klux Klan is the backbone to this book which spans just a week, the chapters identified by the days of the week and of the investigation. Burrow is committed to resolving the crime and his diligence results in him he meeting the hierarchy of the takouma; principal business men from all communities and it is how these factions react and respond to the murder and the police investigation which turns the pages of what is an ambitious multi-faceted storyline.

• Same day dedicated vehicles across the UK and Europe

• Overnight parcels from £4.99

• All vehicles available from small van up to an artic

Available 24 hours a day 7 days per week

There are a lot of characters, police officers, suspects, city leaders and the jazz band, these provide Drummond with some relaxation and the reader with moments of imagined musicality. The week unfolds day by day with apparent deadlines and crises to overcome and the eventual outcome is never certain. Francis Spufford is an accomplished and inspiringly inventive writer, a very good narrator. This his third novel will make a great summer read either on a sunny beach or at home. Highly recommended.

Gardens open event returns to Kemerton after a long absence

For the first time in many years, Kemerton is opening a number of its lovely gardens to the public. Visitors will be able to enjoy more than a glimpse over the garden wall into these wonderful spaces.

There will be more than twelve gardens open on Saturday 29th June, including Upper Court, which sits in a beautiful position with stunning views to a large ornamental lake.

Just around the corner lies Old Manor, a lovely example of a 17th century timber-framed house with extensive, charming gardens running down to a stream that adults and children will love to explore.

In between and on a smaller scale, but giving great scope for ideas, gardens will be open at various other locations throughout the village.

Other attractions include adequate free parking, tombola, cakes and refreshments served at the newly refurbished Village Hall, Tombola, ice creams and childrens’ games at Old Manor, bar and music at Upper Court.

The village church of St Nicholas will also be showing itself off with some wonderful flower displays.

Burgers and hot dogs will be provided by the local pub, The Crown, and Kemerton Coffee

Shop will be open where you can find an eclectic assortment of curious and antiques for sale.

The event opens at 10am and entry is only £5 per adult (children under 12 free) and dogs permitted on leads.

TEWKESBURY & DISTRICT CRIBBAGE LEAGUE

Last month on the evening of the 25th, the Crib Doubles Knock Out Cup was again held at the Gardeners Arms, Alderton.

Home advantage saw Mary Merheim and Pauline Sexton clinch the title from the strong Village Inn pairing, Ann Bookham and Graham Wills, who have won the Doubles four times between them, albeit with different partners.

A special shout out to Wendy (Landlady – Gardeners Arms) who put on a splendid supper, ensuring that those who went home empty handed were at least well fed, if not a little tired, since the Final was restricted to ‘Best of Three’ due to the lateness of the evening.

SUSTAINABLE POWER TOOLS

I’m going to talk about petrol versus electric power tools this month because of a conversation I had with a dealer friend of mine that made me think about the issue in a new way, writes Tim Hoskins.

First off, I’m not an advocate for either power method. Sometimes petrol is

better, sometimes battery. Those situations also change according to weight of use and the user.

It’s the servicing that’s causing me problems. A selling point of electric vehicles and tools is the lack of parts that can be serviced, so servicing is (should be) cheaper, or not even necessary in some instances.

This, coupled with the potentially cheaper power source offsets the higher initial outlay. Petrol tools require regu-

lar servicing. Or do they? If you buy quality kit, it will run for years without any pampering, but that goes against our instincts.

The cost of servicing a petrol garden tool is high and can be approximately 50% of the cost of a new machine.

Logic dictates that you should buy new every three years, then. If you include sharpening, with a hedgecutter, the cost of servicing can rise to 60-70% of the cost of a new machine.

I’m not blaming the

service engineers, they have to make a living and the manufacturers charge them silly money for service parts, while making slim profits on new machines.

Disposing of machines that I know have 10-15 years of life left in them is ridiculous.

However, as a Head Gardener, it is my obligation to look after the health and safety of my team and am I doing that if the equipment they use is never serviced? I don’t know what the answer is, but it troubles me a lot.

Jobs for this month: If your grass needs cutting every week, it’s time to do some lawn renovation.

Please, please also lookout for box tree caterpillar. They are easily and cheaply controlled, but you can’t delay treatment, even for a few days. It makes me so sad to see hedges of our native box destroyed everywhere!

Tewkesbury Choral Society goes from strength to strength

Post-pandemic, in September 2021 our numbers had plummeted from around 120 to just over 60. Many similar choirs across the country had to close due to this fall-off.

However, thanks to a massive recruiting campaign, we have steadily attracted more singers so that we are almost back to our previous strength. This has included a significant number of younger people and some who had never sung in a “classical” choir before.

Under the gentle encouragement and guidance of John Holloway, our Musical Director, the vast majority of these new recruits have become committed members of the choir. With this increase, our future is bright, and once again we are able to perform larger and more ambitious works.

In December 2023 we performed well known music by Haydn (Little Organ Mass) and Han-

del - one of his Coronation Anthems and Part 1 of Messiah, which proved popular and was well supported.

The programme we

will be singing on Saturday 11th May in Tewkesbury Abbey, beginning at 7.30pm, will be less familiar to our audience - two masses, both with organ accompaniment, one by Dvorak and the other by Vierne.

Antonin Dvorak composed his Mass in D in 1887 when he was in his early 40’s for a small choir of semi-professionals. The music reflects his love of the folk music of his Bohemian homeland , now part of Czechia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Although written for organ accompaniment, he later rearranged it for orchestra. The original version was only published in 1967 and it is this version which we will be singing.

Louis Vierne was born in France in 1870 and was virtually blind from birth. Although a composer, he was largely known in his lifetime as an organist and spent

much of his career as the organist of Notre Dame in Paris from 1900 until 1937 when he died whilst giving his 1,750th concert still seated at the keyboard. As might be expected, most of his compositions were for organ, including six organ concertos, one comprising 24 movements! He also composed some vocal works including the Messe Solennelle in C sharp minor which was first performed in 1901. It is scored for choir and not just one, but two organs - “Grande” and “Choeur”. It is rich in harmony and texture. If you like both choral and organ music, this will be a concert to enjoy!

Tickets - £18 (children and carers free; students, £9) are available from members of the choir, from the Abbey Shop, from Alison’s Bookshop, on line (www.ticketsource.co.uk/t-c-s) or at the door on the evening of the performance.

Probus Club visits classic car heaven

Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club meet every Tuesday morning where we have speakers giving talks on a very wide selection of subjects, but occasionally we go out on external visits to places of interest.

Our latest trip was to the British Motor Heritage factory at Witney, where new bodyshells are manufactured for classic sports cars which are now decades out of production when they were assembled by companies like MG, Austin Healey, Triumph, Jaguar and British Leyland.

The company was set up in 1975 with the objective of keeping classic cars such as the MGB and Jaguar E-type as well as the original Mini on the road. These cars all had very poor rust prevention when they were assembled back in the 1960’s and thousands of them have been scrapped because the bodywork just rusted away, so the compa-

ny was set up to make new replacement bodyshells and parts but treated with modern rust prevention so that these

classics could theoretically go on for ever. After an introductory talk about BMH, we were taken around the company complex, initially into the archive room where there are literally thousands of blueprints, engineering drawings and production schedules which have been rescued from

the original car factories. We then moved into the main assembly workshop where many different bodyshells are

made as well as a multitude of body panels. I started my working life as an apprentice mechanical engineer and this experience was real a nostalgia trip back to my roots. The assembly shop is just as I remember them from the 1960’s with the same noises and smells and with skilled craftsmen

creating body panels with files, hammers and welding torches and using genuine spot-welding machines from the 1960’s with not a robot in sight.

Our tour continued to the interiors section with ladies operating industrial sewing machines making seats and carpets and hoods for sports convertibles. The workers in the factory clearly love their work and it was a joy to talk to them enjoying their role in keeping classic cars going as long as possible.

Our events programme for the coming month is featured on P37.

TEWKESBURY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Thursday 23rd May 2024

Annual General Meeting followed by ‘The HSAZ Project in Completion’ presented by Georgia Smith

Methodist Church, Tewkesbury Cross at 7.45pm.

Members £2.50, Visitors £4.00. All welcome. For more details visit tewkesburyhistory.org

It recalls the buildings of the Upper High Street replaced by the current Shopping Centre, now controversially and mistakenly called the “Kremlin”.

The scheme was inspired in the late 1960s by the Town Clerk of Tewkesbury, Ken Smale, as ‘Progressives/Progs’, who hoped it would restore growth to an economically decaying town. The plans were opposed by some residents, the’Medieval-ists/Meds’, led by writer and conservationist, John Moore.

Indeed, the plan to demolish these ancient

buildings - and notably the Doddo Restaurantinspired the formation of the Tewkesbury Civic Society.

It still functions to ensure that, in future, historic buildings cannot be demolished without due legal and cultural consideration.

Had there been a Conservation Area at that time, the ‘art-deco’ frontage of the Sabrina Cinema may have been saved, although it is unlikely that alleys such as Double Alley would have escaped.

You can learn more about this historical development by visiting

A NEW AND PROTECTED FUTURE FOR ICONIC TEWKESBURY STONE FRIEZE

On display in the new Peter Ball estate agency office, at Tewkesbury Cross, is the carefully restored Frisby’s stone edifice that fronted the building for many years.

As part of the High Street Regeneration Zone project the building was returned to its former self with alterations to the shop foot print at floor level and the replacement of the sign with an arched sash window.

The sign, a much later addition, has been carefully rehomed inside the office and the lettering painstakingly restored.

Manager of the Tewkesbury office, Stefan Knight, explained that a photograph of a street view in the early 1900’s was given to them, and has been enlarged to cover a wall in the meeting room.

The detail of the original image was pin sharp which permitted such a huge enlargement.

Both items are an historical credit to both Peter Ball and company, and the landlord of the property.

RNLI 200 year Birthday Celebration at Croft Farm.

After witnessing some of the 1,800 shipwrecks and subsequent loss of life per year around the coasts of Britain, Sir William Hillary founded the Royal National Lifeboat Institution at The London Tavern on the 4th March 1824. Two hundred years ago!

Since it’s foundation the lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.

The RNLI volunteers

provide a 24 hour Search and Rescue Service around the coasts of the U.K and Ireland. They operate 238 lifeboat stations and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches.

The RNLI is independent of the Coastguard and Government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. This is in the original charter and is still true today.

In honour of this

momentous milestone we are holding a fund-raising, 200th Birthday Celebration for the RNLI.

SEVEN DAYS, SO MANY WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

St Nicholas Church, Ashchurch fundraisers are gearing up for a major charity appeal to support vulnerable communities around the world. St Nicholas Church, Ashchurch has organised a Coffee morning and plant sale at the Northway Hub at 11am on Monday the 13th May and a special Christian Aid service on Sunday at 11am with plant sale afterwards as part of Christian Aid Week 2024.

Guy Fancourt Christian Aid rep for St Nicholas Ashchurch said: “Every year, during this appeal, people across Britain and Ireland have seven days and so many ways to raise funds to support their global neighbours, in a celebration of hope for a fairer world.

“We are taking part by running these two events as we are one world and interlinked especially as climate change takes hold. Money raised during Christian Aid Week will help the organisation’s partners empower vulnerable communities to find practical and sustainable ways out of poverty.

This year’s appeal – from 12-18 May - is focussing on work in Burundi, one of the most densely populated and poorest countries in Africa. Heavily reliant on agriculture, it’s also one of the least prepared to combat the effects of climate change, including droughts, floods and

landslides. The global cost of living crisis has intensified the challenges: more than 70 per cent of the population live in poverty and more than half of children are chronically malnourished.

Her life changed when she went to a three-day, Christian Aid-funded community workshop. With a small start-up loan, Aline began trading avocados and peanuts locally. She’s now a grocery wholesaler and living on her own plot of land where she’s building a home for her family. In the next five years she hopes to expand, so one day she can buy a mill. This will provide a source of income without the need to transport heavy goods over long distances.

Community Support: Cotteswold Dairy Supplies #Feed Cheltenham with Refrigerated Vehicle

Cotteswold Dairy Ltd is delighted to have been able to supply a refrigerated vehicle to #Feed Cheltenham, a charity set up during the pandemic to help those facing food poverty in the area. The Tewkesbury based dairy has been supplying milk to the charity as a regular donation each week, but realised that a lack of a large fridge has restricted the products they are able to have donated, store and distribute.

Following from discussions with them it seemed that a refrigerated vehicle would

be more useful to the charity as it would enable them to collect, store and deliver chilled items. This would open up opportunities to them from other companies to use any items that could otherwise be wasted, and enable those in need to have them. The staff at Cotteswold Dairy decided that they would provide a van and as

part of their fundraising efforts during 2023, their 85th anniversary year, they raised the funds and found a suitable vehicle. One way that money was raised was through a staff raffle, which had some great prizes donated by businesses that supply the company, so it was fantastic to have their support too. The van was purchased from the owners of a local catering company who were retiring, so they were thrilled that their vehicle was going on to help such a great cause.

The van was handed over by George Workman, Managing Director of Cotteswold Dairy, to Linda Grice from #Feed Cheltenham. Linda said “This is going to be a great asset for us as we have been using our own vehicles to trans-

port food, but never anything refrigerated before. I am so grateful to Cotteswold Dairy, we would not be able to do this without them. They have been supporting us with milk on a weekly basis for our pantries, they are a great resource and we appreciate the support.”

George added “This is really important because we need to give back to the local community and help those who are not well off. We’ve been going for over 85 years and I think it’s fantastic that we have two organisations here working together because sadly in this country there is a lot of waste and if more companies can work together to make things better it will go a long way towards tackling poverty.”

SPECIAL FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION TALK FOR SEVERN UNIT MVS

New recruit to Tewkesbury based Severn Unit, Richard Jeynes (founder and CEO of expedition company Trailquest www.trailquestadventure.co.uk), gave a talk to the Unit on The Legion Project.

Richard said “The project, run in association with several UK universities, is a long term archaeological investigation of French Foreign Legion forts and outposts in Morocco that was originally inspired by reading the famous Foreign Legion novel “Beau Geste” many years ago. This adventure novel published in 1924 details the adventures of three English brothers who enlist in the French foreign Legion. The author, P C Wren, spent the last years of his life in Gloucestershire and he was buried in the graveyard of Holy Trinity Church, Amberley where his grave continues to be visited by people from around the world.”

Head of Unit Nic Price said “This was a fascinating talk and members were so fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about the various artefacts that Richard

m Pictured is Richard Jeynes (far left) with Severn Unit members.

and his colleagues found whilst excavating some of the forts and blockhouses in North Africa.

Richard studied archaeology at Durham University before embarking on an Army career and was very knowledgeable about the subject and we

look forward to hearing more about his adventures throughout the World with his company Trailquest .”

Afloat training will shortly be resumed after a Winter of extreme flooding in the Avon and Severn valleys.

MITTON W.I.

Over the last two months we have all learnt a great amount. Firstly at March’s meeting we were visited by Glass Artist Sarah Brown who kindly brought in some of her spectacular glass sculptures and explained her method of producing such intricate designs. Following this, quite a few of our members will now be attending one of Sarah’s workshops to have a go for themselves.

During April we learnt how to help the wildlife in our gardens thanks to Jo from Haven4Wildlife - the plants to grow, providing water and leaving some small areas a little wild. Many thanks to Jo for an extremely interesting talk. Next month (13th May) we will be hearing from Vickie Pullen and sprint sled dog racing.

Mitton W.I meets at Mitton Manor School every 1st Monday of the month 7.30pm, unless it is a Bank Holiday.

The walk visits two neighbouring villages between Tewkesbury and Cheltenham, which are linked by an ancient byway called Dog Bark Lane.

Our route starts from the little church of St Lawrence in Swindon Village, with its Norman six-sided tower. There is limited on-street parking here; car parks are at the nearby playing fields and village hall.

Leaving the church on your left (1) walk along Church Road, ignoring turnings to the left and right, to go straight ahead into Stanton’s Drive.

At the end of the road, after passing the allotments on your right (2) walk into a field. You are now following the Cheltenham Circular Footpath to Elmstone.

Keep the hedge on your right, and at the end of it head diagonally left across the field, and cross over the brook. Stay on the path to meet hedge-lined Dog Bark Lane (3) and cross over it into another field.

Keep the hedge to your right until you meet cross tracks (4) . Go straight ahead to emerge on to a tarmac road known as ‘The Green’.

Walk ahead, passing Chosen View Farm, to

reach Elmstone Hardwicke’s 15th Century church, which is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene.

The churchyard is a lovely quiet spot for reflection, and has one or two benches for relaxation.

Moving on, just after the church, the village street bends sharply to the right, near old school buildings, and then to the left. At this junction walk ahead into the splendidly named Lowdilow Lane (5)

You will pass several more modern homes, then a farm on your left. Look out for the obvious entrance to the byway on your right (6) and

DISTANCE: approx 3.25 miles, flat, easy walking

PARKING: With care in Swindon Village. There are car parks at the village hall and playing fields. MAP: Sketch map above is not to scale. OS Explorer Map 179 recommended

turn into it: you are now in Dog Bark Lane.

The often overgrownstream to your left is Wyman’s Brook which joins Hyde Brook, north of Lowdilow Lane to form the River Swilgate. The Swilgate meanders on, passing Tewkesbury Abbey and the Vineyards before it flows into the Mill Avon.

Follow Dog Bark Lane along its length until you emerge on to Manor Road at Swindon Village (7). Turn left and walk back up the slope to

reach the T-junction. Turn right and follow the route back to Swindon Village Church.

There are no opportunities to buy refreshments on this route, so do set out prepared!

The nearest shops and cafés are in the Kingsditch retail parks on the outskirts of Cheltenham.

The route is mostly flat, but as Dog Bark Lane is a byway it is used by horses and can be muddy at certain times of year.

A Book Fair with difference

To celebrate Bookworm’s forthcoming fifteenth anniversary of successfully raising funds for the community, the volunteers are organising a book fair with a difference, writes Shelby Powell.

This free event is taking place across two venues in the town on Sunday 30th June. The bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street will be open from 11.00am for browsing two floors of donated books, to include exclusive access to a further 2,000 books only usually available from the online bookstore.

The Watson Hall, which is only a five minute walk away from the store, will host an auction and valuation event. It will be open from 11.00am for an auction preview of hand-picked collectable books and stamps. There will be a vintage-style tea room with refreshments and homemade cake.

The main event starts at 2.00pm with auctioneer Steven B. Bruce presenting an engaging talk, as well as valuing any treasures you care to bring along (not limited to books). The organisers suggest a donation of £5.00 for valuations, which will be donated to the Hope for Tomorrow cancer charity.

Event updates will be available from Facebook - www.facebook.com/bookwormtewkesbury - or ring 01684 438435.
