This first novel, but by an acclaimed writer of non-fiction, is all about the American underground. The system where the enslaved sought freedom in the North escaping the cruelty and degradation of the slavery of the Deep South, which was so deftly recounted by Colson Whitehead in his award winning "The Underground Railway".

Two novels with a similar theme and background but vastly different.

The raw brutality that permeated some of the pages of Whitehead's book is not so blatantly recounted here, though it is ever present, and servitude is never far from the storyline. This is a gentler read in which we are witness to the life of Hiram Walker as he recalls his childhood and a year or two of his early adulthood. He is of mixed origins, his father - his owner, his mother long since sold off to another plantation. He has a half brother Maynard, the much loved white son of his master, to whom he becomes companion, man servant, and minder.

Out of the two sons, Hiram is the more gifted, but from the outset of this book we know that Maynard is a minor background character. It is Hiram and his inherited strange powers that drive the story, his African ancestry, and those skills of Conduction which have been passed on to him that help him and the underground war against slavery.

Apart from his absent mother, of whom he has no memory, his "family" consists of Thena, the woman who took him in after her husband and children were also sold. She cared for him on the Lockless estate, a Virginian plantation

which has been over farmed, and is in decline. Here he entertains his father's guests by displaying his skills of memory, but mainly serves his brother, but he meets Sophia, a fellow slave who is herself the property of Hiram's white uncle.

Events lead to a failed escape from Lockless, and it is mainly only here that the reader is witness to the savagery of slavery, as events unfold and Hiram gets to know Corinne Quinn, and Hawkins her servant, and becomes involved with the underground which sees him spend some months of freedom in Philadelphia. In this city he finds a welcoming group of fellow workers dedicated to the underground, and this passage of the book introduces a plethora of good new characters all of which add to the depth of the story.

Eventually he is emboldened to use his powers and returns to Lockless to rescue Thena and Sophia, as he cannot live his new life having let down the people he loves.

So vastly different to "The Underground Railway", but I did find this novel equally enthralling, and whilst it was published in 2020, to much acclaim, it appears to have unfairly sunk out of sight. Look out for it, it is a very good read.

The Wattsy Walk 2021 Lee Watts from Tewkesbury, in his own words, is doing what he does best, raising money for Cancer Research.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

SPRINGTIME IN PARIS

Foreign travel may be off the itinerary this year, but our walk requires no passport or quarantine! Yes, Paris is within walking distance - and is one of Bredon Hill’s hidden gems, writes Jack B. Walker.

Distance: approx. 2 miles, easy terrain.

Car Parking: with care in Ashton main street.

Refreshments: Star Inn, Ashton. Coffee shops in Beckford.

The Paris in question is a quiet little spot on the lower slopes of Bredon Hill, just a short hop from Ashton-under-Hill.

Park your car in Ashton’s main street just beyond the First School (also accessible by 540 bus from Tewkesbury) and walk up the slope.

Look out for Bakers Lane, which is the first turning on the left (1).

Turn into it and follow the lane as it winds up the hill. Eventually it levels out and becomes a rough track.

Keep straight ahead, ignoring the various footpaths to the left and right.

The view to the left (foliage permitting) is over St Barbara’s Church at Ashton and beyond it Dumbleton Hill and the Cotswolds (see photo).

Eventually you will come to the cluster of houses which make up the tiny hamlet of Paris.

On your left you will see the gateway to Bredon Springs. This was formerly an exotic garden open to the pub-

St Barbara’s Church, Ashton-under-Hill: a short stroll across the meadows from Paris lic - the former home of a botanist who discovered many unusual plants would grow here due to the warm fresh water springs.

Walk ahead, ignoring the track to the right (2) and go down the stoney slope. At the bottom, look for a gap in the hedge and turn right (3) and go straight ahead on the footpath.

Eventually you will come into a field. Go along the edge, keeping the hedge on your right, and over a footbridge.

Head towards a farm gate next to some cot-

tages, one of which was once a temporary home to a well-known writer of country walks!

When you reach the lane (4) turn right and go up a track, which leads into an orchard (5). Go through the gate and bear right, keeping the fence to your right.

Go over a stile and a stream, then up the bank and diagonally right.

This path will bring you back to point (3).

Bear right along the track and though a farm gate, following the way marker diagonally right to a gate (often left

open), keep the perimeter on your right, with a small pond (known as the Moat) behind it.

When you reach the edge of the churchyard, go through the kissing gate (6) and carry on past the lovely old parish church. Dating back to the 1100s, it is one of only three churches in England dedicated to St Barbara.

Go through the lych gate (7) and turn left.

Pass the Star Inn and return to your car.

Please follow all government guidelines as well as the countryside code at all times, and keep dogs on leads in the meadows as livestock may be grazing.

Clive is on the Oche for Darts Championship Group Operations Manager Clive Burgess is the man who oversees everything manufactured by Clearway Doors and Windows, as well as sister companies CDW and Designex.

By day he carefully manages three factories for the group and scrutinises quality and on time delivery, as well as looking after production staff.

Now that’s enough for anyone to take on, yet Clive also finds time to run Tewkesbury Junior Darts Academy, and also competes as a very talented amateur darts player himself.

Recently Clive’s darts career has reached new heights as he explains: “I run Tewkesbury Junior Darts Academy which is fully endorsed by the Official Junior Darts Corporation (JDC).

At the start of lockdown all those months ago, all the academies had to close their doors and that was it - or so we thought at the time.

“Shortly after the start of the lockdown, the JDC devised a programme called ‘JDC Virtual’, which meant the students and other players could practice online. It was a big success. So much so, they decided to hold the very first JDC Virtual Amateur World Darts Champion-

Clive Burgess with some of the trophies he has won ships. All players had to do to unlock passports for the event was to complete the practice routine every day, and have an average score of over 700 over six days to unlock their first passport.

“Once players had six passports unlocked they obtained their ‘virtual ticket’.

“After this, players then had the chance to get ranking points by doing the routine regularly, and having their ten best scores recorded,

giving a grand total of points which would then form the ranking table.

“At the close of that I found myself in 16th place in the rankings out of over 400 people.

“Whilst waiting for the event to happen (which currently is planned for June this year in Gibraltar), I have competed in a number of online events, most recently when I was competing for the English National Amateur Champion Title.

“Unfortunately I fell a little short in the quarter final, losing 8-7 to a very established and accomplished ex-pro.

“I am now actively looking for sponsors who can help cover some of the costs of the Gibraltar trip - and for any other competitions I enter over the next twelve months. A MINOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE LOCKDOWN TEN PIECES FOR SOLO PIANO Composed and Performed by Peter Gill This beautiful collection of solo piano pieces which is now available as both a sheet music book and as a CD was composed and recorded during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2021 in the composer’s home in Aston on Carrant near Tewkesbury.

Some of the pieces, Peter says, came to him quickly, others took more time but they were all, for him, a labour of love.

Along with many other people and organisations we have found the last few months very challenging, but we have been doing our best to keep touch with our members.

Using Zoom, with varying degrees of success, we did manage to restart our programme last October. Some of our meetings were just a general chat and catch up, but we did have a couple of local speakers, namely John Dixon on ‘Tropical Tewkesbury’ and Steve Goodchild told us about the Tewkesbury Banners. Some of our members have also joined in the various Zoom events organised by GFWI. We are now looking forward to all meeting up again and are hoping to have a picnic in June, before we start our regular meetings at the Wheat Pieces Community Centre on July 14th when we look forward to welcoming members both old and new.

All the melodies, however, are intentionally written in minor keys.

He says ‘I have not sought to push any boundaries with these compositions and do not profess them to being anything other than a small part of myself.’

In addition to his own compositions he has included a piece composed by his late father, Ray Gill who died in August 2019.

This is a delightfully simple melody entitled Recurring Dream that was composed when Peter was young and which has stayed in his heart ever since.

To record it for the CD and arrange it for the sheet music, Peter feels is a simple, but important tribute to a man he misses greatly.

The founder and Chief Instructor Paul Wanklyn, a 5th Degree Black Belt initially opened the academy for Taekwon-Do students back in 2011 with his wife Jill, a 4th Degree Black Belt.

The Academy now offers Tiger Cubs, a children’s Martial Arts based training system and Korean Kickboxing as well as the traditional form of Taekwon-Do. Mr Wanklyn said “We initially opened at Queen Margaret’s School but quickly had to move to bigger premises. Being local Tewkesbury people ourselves, we wanted to provide a quality service to those interested in taking up Martial Arts.

“We’ve been extremely fortunate since opening the Academy, we were one of only two Martial Arts groups in Gloucestershire to provide demonstrations at

the Olympic Torch ceremony at Cheltenham Racecourse exactly 12 months after opening.

“We have worked alongside such organisations as SPORTED, who provided us with funding to get underprivileged children into sport, The Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner Martin Surl who also provided funding for a special Friday Night project.

“This project focused on reducing ASB in the area and helping youngsters to get active and give them some direction in life.

“We are now aligned with a first generation Pioneer of Taekwon-Do, Pioneer Grandmaster Kong who has travelled the globe to teach the art.

“Some of our Black Belts had their certificates personally present-

ed to them by GM Kong at a ceremony in Crawley. None of this would have been possible if we had not made the decision to become an independent Academy and provide a professional service.

“We are now Clubmark accredited and one of the largest Martial Arts centres in the area.

It’s been a privilege to offer our services to the people of Tewkesbury and also to watch the transformations in people’s lives that Martial Arts can offer.

Tewkesbury Park residents commemorate the Battle of Tewkesbury For residents of Tewkesbury Park, the cancellation of official celebrations for the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Tewkesbury was particularly hard. The 136 households not only live on part of the Battlefield but much of the action on May 4th 1471, that witnessed Edward of York triumph against his rival Margaret of Anjou, took place in their back gardens.

Undaunted, the local residents association, formed 4 years ago and responsible for the medieval street banners that hang down Lincoln Green Lane, have mounted their own Covid 19 secure commemoration instead.

was marked in some way and it had provided a welcome and enjoyable distraction for everyone during the latest lockdown.

The community is now planning a series of other planting projects.

WINNERS OF THREE PRESTIGIOUS 2020 GOLD AWARDS IN TEWKESBURY In less than six months residents have obtained a council license to create an 8.5 meters raised 1471 planting scheme in Lincoln Green Lane and secured sponsorship from local councillor and groundworks contractor Kevin Cromwell, for plant hire and 20 tonnes of soil.

Dawn Robinson, resident and owner of Daybreak Designs, came up with the design with other residents fund raising, including an online auction, cake bake sales, several raffles and appeals for personal donations to purchase all the plants, turf and edging required as well as implementing the project.

The final touch, will be white and red roses sponsored by individual residents. Each rose will bear a brass heart, with a message to a loved one. The choice of Roses is also signification from

A Dutchman’s Historical Record Of Gloucestershire Hardback £20.00 Local historian Anthea Jones, author of “The History of Tewkesbury”, as well as books on the Cotswolds and Cheltenham has edited a new book on the Gloucestershire Engravings of Johannes Kip. Three hundred years ago, in 1721, the Dutch engraver Johannes Kip died, ending a successful 30 year English career as a print-maker leaving a legacy covering Gloucestershire.

Anthea’s book contains high quality reproductions of all 64 engravings. Accompanying these is a brief commentary on each with pointers to the details and

to the history of the houses and families, including many colour and black and white illustrations.

Kip’s engravings in many cases reflect the gardens and houses as they still exist 300 years later, and as such offer an additional contribution to the history of Gloucestershire.

In 1931 Cheltenham took over our company and, in 1948, it was nationalised as the

Gas Board until the 1980s when again the famous “Tell Sid” campaign persuaded us to buy - and sell - shares profitably in British Gas, a re-privatised company.

The Fire Brigade had moved in by 1984 and I am always impressed by the contribution its staff made to the life and charities of the town,

most famously in the lamented annual Pram Races.

In 2021 we are lucky still to have our own Fire Station and part-time officers. It has proved a good use for a historic, but abandoned site – hidden then behind brick walls, but now behind a modern fence.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked how I maintain a green lawn in a drought – deep roots are the key. Aerating is a good autumn to spring task, but you can do it all year round if it isn’t too hot. How often?

Every two-three weeks, or as often as you can be bothered!

Ruderals (weeds) are invariably native plants and can add colour to an otherwise bland green desert.

If you like closely-mown lawns, introduce selfheal and clovers and mow irregularly to let them flower, before you dead-head them with the mower.

If you like more height to your lawn, introduce a profusion of daisies.

Leaving the grass to grow will benefit species that can eat it or hide in it but remember you can mow at a higher level if your lawnmower will allow. You can keep long grass areas looking tidy and deliberate by mowing a neat collar around the edge, edging it formally with shears and occasionally trimming overhanging stems off paths and edges.

Think of your lawn as an area that needs care, like anywhere else (but it doesn’t need to be intensive or a chore).

Volunteers at Bookworm bookshop are pleased to re-open the high street shop so the good work this community gem generates can keep on going.

The latest round of donations made in April include £1000 bonuses to Tewkesbury Christmas lights fund and Tewkesbury in Bloom who benefit annually from the shop’s book sales.

In addition a donation has been made to Tewkesbury School for book purchases for year 9 Students, Vale Wildlife hospital, Alderman Knight School as well as the Focus charity group based at Cheltenham hospital who support cancer patients and their families.

There will be further round of donations made later in the year to benefit the local community, and the largest annual donation is made to Cancer Research.

The shop is run by founder and part time manager, Karen Brennan (pictured) who is looking forward to wel-

coming a new member of staff to joint the team next month.

The Government’s Kickstart programme which supports unemployed people aged 16 to 24, is helping the shop provide employment and training on a six month scheme to a young person.

In the meantime, the shop which is just like the Tardis is filled to the brim with of all kinds of books, music, jigsaws, and stamps over two floors.

Please do pop in and support the volunteers and pick up a bargain or two.

Nickie Philipson-Stow celebrated 40 years of trade from her shop, The Orange Pig Children’s Clothing shop, in Tewkesbury High Street.

The shop opened on Monday the 19th April 1981, and Nickie has two photos she would like to share, a photo of the shop front on opening day and a photo of her first customer, a little girl (sadly not known), who was her first customer.

Whilst working as a Nanny in London, Nickie often bought clothing for busy mothers, seeking good quality with style, from there her love of outfitting children turned into a business.

Since opening, customers have come from far and wide, seeking out, major clothing brands that include Sarah Louise, Pretty Originals, Mayoral, Dandelion, Hatley, Beau Kids, Annafie, and Caramello.

Earlier, in the late eighteenth century, there is a record of a John Charlewood, which maybe explains it once being Charlewood’s Alley. It became known as Matthews’ Alley, when a butcher of that name took the front shop, though its official name seems to have been Savings Bank Alley. In 1900, when the property was for sale, it had been occupied by Edward Harper, Butcher, for many years. The plot included a slaughterhouse at the Swilgate Road end of the alley and a wooden cart shed on the banks of the Swilgate. The cottage in the alley, Bicknor Cottage, was let separately. In 1902, Charles Matthews bought all the property. The slaughterhouse was used up until the war, when rationing stopped a lot of small slaughterhouses operating. Charles died in 1944 and his daughter Veronica took over, a pioneer woman butcher, and ran the shop until she retired. The furthest she went from Tewkesbury in her whole life was to Weston Super Mare for a holiday.

Unusually, the alley entrance is within the footprint of Bank House, 4 Church Street (now Images hairdressers)

but the alley buildings are all behind 6 Church Street (now ‘to Have and to Hold’ Records). There is no sign of there ever being any buildings behind No 4. The plan view shows that 6 and 7 share the same burgage plot, so must have been a single property once. The buildings both date from the sixteenth century, so any agreement for access to the back must predate that. Bank House is two hundred years younger and of stone; a unique material for Tewkesbury.

Another oddity is the numbering. Bicknor Cottage, in the alley, is numbered as 5 Church Street, which must confuse postmen. This appears to have been the only alley cottage. The 1884 Ordnance Survey map shows the land between it and the building on the Swilgate as gardens. All the development shown in Bryan Linnell’s sketch, including the stables, must post-date this.

But, at a time when Covid restrictions remain, the railway – which this year celebrates its 40th Anniversary – is operating pre-bookable round-trip trains only, from its Toddington station.

The service runs south to Cheltenham Racecourse before retracing its route via Toddington to Broadway, then returning to Toddington – a full 28-mile journey behind steam.

Richard Winstanley, the voluntary Finance Director of GWSR Plc, commented: “I am delighted with the way that our volunteers, the public and our supporters have responded to the railway’s resumption of services, following the first stage in the Government’s roadmap to lifting of Covid restrictions.

“We expect this

Covid-secure service to continue until the beginning of July, of course subject to any further announcements from the Government.

“It’s wonderful to see our beautifully-restored locomotives steaming through the glorious Cotswold countryside after so many months of lockdown, which has brought real financial difficulties: not just for us, but every other cultural and historic organisation.”

The railway has however, benefited from two life-line funding grants from the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage.

These could amount to nearly £390,000 and are designed to help meet essential maintenance and overhead operational costs which would normally be met from ticket revenue.

To Finn Bayliss, sadly killed in a motorcycle accident at the Deerhurst junction on the A38 near Tewkesbury. Johnny James, proprietor of the Boathouse Restaurant pays this tribute to a much loved, and appreciated colleague.

Finn Bayliss worked with us at The Boathouse for two years quickly establishing himself as an integral part of our kitchen team.

He was hard-working, reliable and a quick learner who was always there to help us even when he wasn’t at work.

What set him apart however was his ability to make us all smile, in a busy and pressurised situation that resulted

in his being so adored as both a friend and colleague.

In Finn, we had someone that always had our backs, someone who cared deeply for those he worked with - it came as no surprise that his friends and family have come together in their hundreds to honour one of Tewkesbury’s really decent young men.
