Ancestry by

This is a fictionalised account of some of the author's ancestors, hence the title, being based on his genealogical research.

Simon Mawer's family has an interesting history which in the hands of a very competent experienced author produces an intriguing and unusual read. As you turn the pages, you know there is a lot of fact behind the fiction, but the interest is because it is fiction and the merging of two branches of his family tree into one book makes a good story.

The book begins on a Suffolk beach in 1837 with the discovery of a body by Abraham Block and his brother, Isaac.

Abraham pockets two gold sovereigns which later help him escape the restrictions of his home village fulfilling his wish by running off to sea where he becomes an experienced seaman; samples life, foreign parts and the mysteries of London, where he returns to when he can, having family living there.

Naomi Lulham, a seamstress, leaves Hastings to try and make her way in London. The plan is to live with her elder sister Mary, but a meeting on the train leads to an affair and she finds herself expecting a baby. She ends up lodging with Abraham's uncle, close by the docks, establishes herself with her craft, which, along with their fictional life story, provides the next part of the author's family tree. Abraham and Naomi become a couple, though a seaman's life leads to long periods away, but their home life is a happy one.

The second part of the family tree introduces the reader to George Mawer, a soldier in the 50th Regiment of Foot. In 1847 at Manchester Cathedral he marries his Irish-born wife Ann Scanlon.

We follow the couple, and their growing family around various barracks and garrisons as his postings lead them from town to town. The Crimean War takes George, now a

Corporal, off to a war which Simon Mawer features strongly in this part of the book with in depth descriptions of engagements and embattlements within the peninsular. In particular the siege of Sevastapol. Ann is left to fend for herself and her children; there was no support for army wives of fighting troops.

As George has roots in Lincolnshire she opts to head there rather than back to Ireland. She gradually establishes herself in Lincoln city living a very hard life, but with the support of the local priest and aided by parish charity. However, her two eldest children are sent to schools in London where at least they are cared for and educated, though separated and far away from their mother. It is a tortuous existence that the author depicts for Ann Mawer. Her life story is the core of this section as the author links up his genealogical routes.

This is an unusual novel well told. The sections within Crimea authenticated by the historical records Mawer refers to, as he does interestingly elsewhere throughout the book. It is an original way to source the theme for a work of historical fiction; he succeeds.

Anyone interested in 19th century British social history will enjoy this book; Simon Mawer's loyal followers will not be disappointed.

War in Ukraine - Q: When will it end?

I am often asked at talks “when will the war end?”, writes Tim Wright.

It will end when free nations stop supporting liberty - or - Rational Russians (there are some) recognise this is futile and they can’t reinvent the USSR.

At a talk in Cyprus (Greek sector) someone Asked “why does Ukraine not just give Russia the bits it wants!!!”.

Answer: Yes, why not, and Turkish occupation of the north is totally acceptable - silence.

Much blame for this oppression of free peoples can be laid at the clumsy hands of NATO Allies and a blind eye to the occupation of the Crimea.

What next? Well, we are being asked for more clothing, durable

foods, tins and Medicare for the 150,000 people displaced by the ‘accidental’(1) blowing up of the Kakhovka dam.

We have just delivered 4x ambulancesnow on the front lines, More large generators and a host of medical supplies. You can give either through donations via the registered dedicated charity (2) or offering items requested

through our hubs. For more details/talks Please contact me, Tim Wright, frogwellvct@gmail.com in Tewkesbury.

Clearway celebrate forty years of innovation and expansion

A thriving local door and window company celebrates forty years of business this month.

Cheltenham-based Clearway Doors and Windows Ltd has been manufacturing and installing windows and doors since 1983, growing from a two-man business to its present size, employing over 30 staff.

Clearway Doors & Windows, which was bought out by its management team in 2017, now has both a factory and showrooms at the Kingsditch Trading Estate in Cheltenham, plus a specialist trade door and window fabrication unit in Gloucester - CDW Systems Ltd.

Managing Director Jeremy Phillips said: “Demand from architects and customers who appreciate slimmer aluminium profiles has never been higher.

“Frame sections can be tailored to specific designs, and there is a vast range of colours available through powder coating - as well as a choice of gloss, satin or matt finishes.”

Clearway has undertaken a variety of projects over the years; schools, hospitals, factories and sports clubs have all appreciated the

service and high levels of customer care received - as well as individual clients whose needs vary from a single item or refurbishment right up to a complete new build.

“From start to finish, we are involved at every stage of an order, Jeremy added. We have our own Sales Consultants, Surveyors, Project Management Team, Manufacturing staff and Installers - so we’re with our customers all the way.”

Clearway are constantly introducing new products to satisfy the demand of both commercial and domestic clients.

This year has seen the launch of Lumina F82 Bifold Doors, as well as art-deco style external and internal windows and doors. Flat roof lights and lanterns are also proving extremely popular.

Clearway also runs an apprenticeship scheme, and was delighted when Cameron Storror, from Tewkesbury, recently gained a distinction in fenestration installation. For more information, call into Clearway’s Showrooms at Manor Park Business Centre (see ad below) or visit the website www.clearwaydoorsandwindows. co.uk

Tewkesbury’s riverside beauty enhanced

The first phase of works to enhance the Tewkesbury riverside walk in the heart of the town - at St. Mary’s Road and Prior’s Court - has now been completed thanks to funding from Tewkesbury’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ).

The HSHAZ is a partnership between Tewkesbury Borough Council and Historic England to invest £1m in the regeneration of the historic town centre.

Working in collaboration with Tewkesbury Town Council, phase one has seen the replacement of the unsightly mesh fencing with a new post-and-rail fence to match the other areas of the riverside walk.

Future plans for the riverside are in the early stages of development, but currently include: clearing weeds from the stone wall opposite the new fence in Prior’s Court and repairing it using traditional lime mortar, and repairing the wall near the moorings on St Mary’s Road. Following these improvements, the town council will be working with Tewkesbury in Bloom to install a new wildflower planting area.

Tewkesbury Town Council clerk, Debbie Hill, said: “Now that the new railings are in place, it’s hard to remember what the riverside looked like before. We’ve had so many lovely comments from

regular walkers along this route, all wanting to say thank you to the

Town Council and the HSHAZ for undertaking this project.”

VILLAGE PREPARES FOR POPULAR ANNUAL STREET MARKET

Summer has come around again and the people of Overbury, situated just north east of Tewkesbury, are busy preparing for the major event of their Summer calendar.

The annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 8th July.

The market, which has been running for over forty years, takes place between 10am and 12 noon against a picturesque backdrop of stone cottages, St Faith’s Church (which dates back to Norman times) and the 18th century Overbury Court.

During a hectic two hours, there's an opportunity to pick up unusually high quality bargains. A local food range will include tender Overbury Farms lamb, and honey produced from orchards in the parish. Anne's Pantry will also offer a range of homemade cakes and other goodies.

Stalls include the ever popular ‘Going for a Song’ - overflowing with paraphernalia of all descriptions. Other stalls have a huge range of

things including books, toys, DVDs, plants, crafts, jams and preserves; the list goes on and on.

Talented local artists display their work, and there will be live music, tea, coffee, cake and ice creams served in Berkeley House Garden.

Whitcombe Garden (a member of the National Gardens Scheme) opens for relaxation and meandering, and the Friends of Overbury School will be organising fun activities for children.

The raffle has magnificent prizes to be won,

and there is a good bottle stall and tombola too.

Mouth-watering bacon butties can be enjoyedand are ready prior to market opening.

Car parking and entry are both free. The organisers regret that no dogs are allowed. Cash payment is preferred for all stalls.

If very wet, the market will take place in the Village Hall. Money raised from the event parish organisations. For more information on Overbury village and Street Market, visit www.overbury.org

Following a public meeting in October 1932, “The Company of Friends of Tewkesbury Abbey” approved its first constitution shortly afterwards in 1933. It was described as “an organisation established for the purpose of more deeply interesting the world in Tewkesbury’s magnificent gem of Norman architecture”.

Its aims were - and remain - to assist the Parochial Church Council in maintaining the fabric of the Abbey, its services

and activities, to ensure its preservation for posterity. Over the 90 years of their existence The Friends have raised literally millions of pounds to fulfil those aims and will do all they can in the years ahead to continue

that commitment.

In celebration of their 90th birthday, The Friends are holding a special anniversary festival on Sunday 2nd July 2023. There will be a Festive Sung Eucharist at 10.30, at

which the Bishop of Gloucester will preside, the Very Revd Michael Tavinor will preach and the Lord Lieutenant will be in attendance. All are welcome at the service whether or not you are a member of The Friends.

The service will be followed by a Bring and Share lunch in the Parish Hall and the Annual General Meeting will be held immediately afterwards.

There will then be a special presentation about the achievements

of The Friends over the past 90 years and, after tea and cake, the day will end with Choral Evensong at 5.00 pm. Again, all are welcome. If you’re not already a member of The Friends this would be an ideal opportunity to join. Membership is open to people of all faiths and none.

6 a Side Cricket and Beer Festival at Bushley

SATURDAY 1ST JULY at Bushley Cricket Club GL20 6JB

This year’s 6 a side cricket and beer festival takes place at Bushley Cricket Club GL20 6JB on Saturday 1st July. Teams register at 10.30 for a full day of fast moving cricket. Each player, except the wicket keeper, bowls one over, so 5 per innings. A decent score is 40, so we could well see around 700 runs scored before sunset, weather permitting of course. Eight guest ales will be available along with cider and perry throughout the day. A lunchtime barbeque will extend into the afternoon, the evening menu will include pulled pork, my favourite!

An extra attraction for the evening will be karaoke in the marquee outside the pavilion. Come and join us under the oak trees at our attractive ground for an entertaining day.

Tewkesbury Civic Society –a Campaigning Society

Tewkesbury Civic Society does a variety of things, the most visible being the erecting of explanatory plaques on important sites plus running exhibitions, a monthly talks programme etc. but it is primarily a campaigning organisation. It was formed in 1965 as a campaigning society to resist the destruction of a large area of historic buildings to make way for Bishops Walk, “the Kremlin” as many locals know it!

Sadly, it was unsuccessful then but subsequently helped prevent the loss of that iconic row of mediaeval buildings lining Church Street from the Crescent to the Abbey, where a Woolworths was envisaged! It also played a major role in stopping a large housing development on the 1471 Battle site.

Since those early days Since those early days protective legislation has been strengthened with the Listing of valuable buildings and creation of Conservation

Areas, as well as there being a greater public appreciation of the historic environment and buildings we have inherited. Such official grand vandalism as that creating “the Kremlin” is unthinkable now.

However, there can still be threats to the quality of our environment and individual buildings so the Society campaigns to keep standards high. To this end the Society monitors all relevant Planning and Listed Building applications, commenting and

making suggestions as appropriate. The Society also flags any developments without application.

The Society has several local lobbying campaigns, improving the Riverside Walk being one, completion of the redevelopment of the Healings Mill and Spring Gardens sites another.

However, the campaign exercising the Society at the moment is the one to remove unsightly Wheelie Bins from the pavements within the Tewkesbury

Conservation Area. They lower the quality of the environment we live in; they have a negative effect on tourism and the income it generates, as well as local property values.

Many people share the Society’s concern about this and the Society would like to work with them to find solutions.

Please get in touch if you can help or if you need help. Contact details are on the Civic Society website.

Restored loco joins home fleet for diesel gala

A popular and versatile 56-year-old British Rail Bo-Bo diesel locomotive is to join the roster for the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway’s annual Summer Heritage Diesel Gala this month.

The locomotive in question is recently restored Sulzer Type 2 / British Rail Class 25 No. D7659 (7659/25309/25909), and is appearing courtesy of Peak Rail and the Waterman Railway Heritage Trust.

327 locomotives were built between 1961 and 1967, with construction being carried out at British Railways’ Crewe Works, Darlington Works, Derby Works, and by Beyer Peacock & Co in Manchester.

The ’25’ operated for ten years in preservation and was last used on a passenger working in 1998.

BABY & CHILDREN’S MARKET and Nearly New Sale

Saturday 1st July

Wheatpieces Community Centre, Tewkesbury GL20 7SP

Entry £2, Kids Free

Long term visitors of the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway may remember that the Type 2 was fortunate to visit the line between 1996 & 1997.

The locomotive moved to Peak Rail along with the rest of the Waterman Railway Heritage Trust’s collection in 2017.

The Summer Heritage Diesel Gala is the GWR’s flagship event for its resident diesels, with visiting locomotives providing an added attraction.

Tickets for the sum-

mer diesel gala, which runs from Friday 7thSunday 9th July, are available online at www.gwsr.com.

With up to eight diesel locomotives and a diesel multiple unit (DMU) running over the weekend, there will be an action-packed timetable of trains.

The locomotive and carriage and wagon workshops will throw open their doors for rare behind-the-scenes visits, and there will be plenty of other activity at the railway’s various stations, including Toddington and Winchcombe.

Tewkesbury Abbey Musica Deo Sacra 2023, A Festival Celebrating Music In The Liturgy

MONDAY 31st JULY TO SUNDAY 6th AUGUST 2023

Musica Deo Sacra is an annual festival celebrating music in the liturgy, held in the magnificent setting of Tewkesbury Abbey. A choir of professional and semi-professional singers assembles to sing some of the finest music composed for the church over many centuries.

The fact that this music is performed in the context of a service – rather than a concert – gives the week a very special, unique flavour.

In addition to the Abbey’s own clergy, distinguished preachers are invited each year. The various services – the Eucharist, Matins, Evensong, Compline, and a Requiem – provide the essential heart of Musica Deo Sacra. In addition there is a range of other musical and social events including an organ recital, a chamber concert, and lectures given by distinguished speakers on liturgical or musically related themes. This year we commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of two of the leading English composers of the Renaissance period, William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes. Contemporary composers

are well represented, including music by Cecilia McDowall, Gabriel Jackson, Jonathan Dove and Philip Moore. Saturday’s Solemn Matins includes a new commission, Memento mei, by John Duggan, in memoriam Tom

Day. The Friday Requiem Mass will be sung to the much-loved setting by Gabriel Fauré and the Sunday morning Eucharist will be sung to the magnificent Mass in D by Anton Dvorak.

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker

ALONG THE SEVERN FROM APPERLEY

This easy and pleasant circular route starts and finishes in the village of Apperley, about five miles to the south of Tewkesbury, writes Jack B. Walker.

As part of this walk follows the River Severn, it should not be attempted when flood warnings are in place. I also recommend using the OS Map 179, or the mobile phone app, as the paths can be a little difficult to follow if overgrown.

The route starts from The Green in the heart of Apperley. Walk down Court Lane (1), with the village pond and the red brick Holy Trinity Church to your left.

left towards some trees (pictured below) and go through the gate. Walk ahead to the Caravan Park in front of you, to reach the Coalhouse Inn by the River Severn.

drive to reach Gabb Lane (7). Turn left and walk up the lane to reach the village centre (8). Turn right along School Lane to return to The Green.

Distance: around 3 miles; can be overgrown by the riverside, particularly in Summer months.

Car parking: near the church in Apperley, with respect to local residents.

Refreshments: Farmers Arms, Apperley, on the B4213 Ledbury Road. The Coalhouse has seasonal opening hours. Check website for details.

Map: not to scale. OS map 179 (Gloucester, Cheltenham & Stroud) is recommended.

SOAK UP THE SUN IN OUR LARGE GARDEN AREA summer menu is out now!

Need a present for a gardener? Maybe you have already started shopping for Christmas?, writes Tim Hoskins.

This is for the early birds, the hard up or the savers.

Free, but they may need time: labour vouchers to help with horrible jobs, seeds/plants you’ve collected yourself or sourced from swaps or social media or even better, plants you’ve grown from seed.

Small cost: Bought seeds. Premier Seeds Direct, Plant World Seed, Mole Seeds and Emorsgate are my favourites. Try Cerinthe major for instant displays in beds or vases.

Gloves: Pfanner stretchflex are the only gloves I wear. Dexterous, protective and extremely hard wearing.

Sizing is the same as washing up gloves. For thorny jobs buy welders gauntlets.

Socks: Screwfix’s Site socks fit better and last longer than anything else I’ve ever worn.

Plants: freely available now and bargains can be had. You can buy plugs and grow them on

and use the opportunity to buy plants that should really be planted in multiples e.g. lavender or specimens like Daphne, Acer, Sarcococca or Pelargoniums.

Suncream: I know too many people with skin cancer and I’ve got liver spots from too many

years thinking my Spanish heritage would exempt me from using suncream.

Now I only use Altruist. Developed by a Consultant Dermatologist who had the aim of making the very best suncream possible and then selling it as cheaply as he could. Good sun protection is as important as gloves or ear defenders.

Tools: Trowel – metal detecting trowels are stronger than any garden tools. I use Evolution.

Fencing pliers – the most versatile tool you could buy anyone. Adjustable-head springtine rake are surprisingly useful.

Bill hook – I use Morris of Dunsford; they’re properly crafted old fashioned tools that will become heirlooms.

Felco secateurs - the best and every part is replaceable. I use no 2 or no 8 but they have a range to suit everyone.

If you’re feeling flush, Sneeboer make good hoes (and other tools) and Haws make good watering cans. Lots of money spare?

A blower will transform your finish if used properly.

Robbed a bank? Automowers (robots) will change your life. Gardening

OSTEOPATHY ADVICE with Philippa Wingate, Two Rivers Osteopathy

RECOVERY RATE

Sometimes it is hard to know when to seek attention for some pain and discomfort and when to allow the body to do what it inherently desires and heal itself. Recovery rate of an injury or overuse is a good indication of underlying conditions or damage.

If you hurt yourself (and due to the time of year let us use gardening as tory mediators to help protect the area. This will feel like a diffuse ache and can often cause

ment. The discomfort from this damage will pass and heal, most often taking 24-48 hours to subside. It is pain you can move through, albeit uncomfortable.

The concern arises when the pain and discomfort lasts longer than this 2 day period, if you are unable to move through the pain, or the pain worsens. This can often mean there is an underlying condition or problem which prior to the activity was managed well. The activity then pushes this problem to its limit and be-

If you find that doing an unusual activity or not a regular activity causes pain which does not ease, it is important to establish if there is an underlying problem. So focus on your recovery rate. Whether you’re 8 or 80, the body wants to heal itself, but life creates underlying issues and injuries which sometime can no longer adapt or be managed.

Tewkesbury in Bloom is a very small group of people aiming to keep the floral displays weed-free, deadheaded and clear of litter - including drinking glasses!! We are particularly grateful to those who continue to sponsor planters and those who are doing so for the first time this year, without your support the displays would not be viable. For the first time this year we have opened a crowdfunding page to raise money to help pay for the hanging baskets in the Crescent and planters on the bridges and Back of Avon, small amounts add up so if you can help please follow the link: to: www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/karen-brennan-3

This year Tewkesbury in Bloom has submitted three ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ entries that will be visited by the RHS In Bloom judges on 17th July. Following the harsh winter much replanting has been needed, particularly for the beds on the Ashchurch Rd., and now volunteers are busy watering to counter what looks set to be a dry, hot summer. If you can spare the odd hour to help us please email tewksinbloom@gmail.com or call 01684 438385

SERENITY

Summer concert in Bredon

Local harmony group Serenity, photographed here, is fast growing in popularity. The style and precision of their open-air performance in Victoria Gardens for the Tewkesbury Big Weekend brought many compliments.

The five singers, all local area residents, are students of experienced and well-known singing teacher Lindsay Martin, who’s also the leader of the popular Roses Theatre choir.

The five – Helen, Liz, Meg, Penny and Sam – all felt that they’d like to bring a close harmony approach to a wider variety of popular songs. Under Lindsay’s musical direction, they’ve put together a vibrant, growing repertoire that should appeal to all ages.

Their next outing will be a summer evening concert in St Giles Church, Bredon where Serenity are looking forward to the amazing acoustics.

The concert will be

on Saturday 22nd July at 7pm with interval refreshments. Serenity have been warmly welcomed by Bredon Church who are already renowned for their excellent live orchestral and sacred music concerts. There won’t be an admission charge, but donations – cash or card - will be gratefully received for local charity GRASAC, Gloucestershire Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.

Sword Swallowing at Probus Club?

Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club are always on the lookout for new and unusual speakers to entertain, educate and enlighten us at our Tuesday morning meetings and we have had literally hundreds of speakers presenting a huge variety of subjects to us over many years.

Perhaps the most unusual subject was when Brian Witcombe, a retired consultant radiologist recently came to tell us all we needed to know about the rather obscure practice of sword swallowing. Perhaps to our members’ relief, Brian is not a sword swallower but a senior medical professional who decided to undertake a research study into this strange activity.

Many people believe that sword swallowing is a trick performed by magicians or circus performers to give the illusion that the sword is either not a real sword or only appears to be swallowed.

But the study used the resources of the Sword Swallowers’ Association International and Brian’s team contacted over a hundred sword swallowers around the world to get full information and to investigate the ill-effects of the practice. The results showed that in fact real swords are used, injuries do happen and (as you might expect) sore throats are a common effect of swallowing a sword.

His study was entitled the Science and Side-effects of Sword Swallowing and the results of the study were published in the British Medical Journal.

Brian’s study was so

well received that it was awarded an IgNobel prize which is a satire on the real Nobel Prize organisation and which awards prizes to celebrate unusual, trivial or bizarre achievements in scientific research.

Brian gave us a fascinating talk, illustrated with many rather gruesome x-ray images of swords actually down throats, proving that it is not trickery but these rather strange people actually do swallow swords and occasionally get hurt. The retired medics in our Club were fascinated by the talk although it has to be said that one or two members found it a little too grisly

for their tastes.

If you are a retired professional or businessman looking for something new to stimulate your retirement in a social environment, you would be very welcome to join us as a guest at one of our Tuesday morning meetings. For more information, please visit our website at www. probusclub.net/tewkesbredon/ or contact our Secretary Steve Tucker on 07803 907243.

Sale starts Wednesday 12th July

On Friday 18th April 1986, Nickie PhilipsonStow opened the door of 122 High Street, Tewkesbury with the help of her neighbour, June and The Orange Pig childrenswear shop was born! Since then June has been succeeded by Lesley, Liz, Julie and finally Ann. The shop has gone from strength to strength with the help of generations of loyal customers. Only last week a family visited and father pointed out the little orange chairs (purchased from Mother Care all those years

ago) and told his daughter “Daddy sat on that chair when he was a little boy!”

I have always stuck to traditional styles of clothing so customers know where to come for their preferred items and I am so grateful to everyone for supporting The Orange Pig for 37 years. I shall miss all my customers but at 84 I feel it is time to hang up the carrier bags and take things a bit slowly now. Thank you all of you for your support.

FoFA, which stands for Fellowship of Fibre Artists, was formed at the beginning of 2022.

It is a collaboration between four local fibre artists sharing mutual support and friendship to inspire and promote their work. The group has already had two successful Open Studio

Exhibitions at 22 Barton Street and are planning another one in August.

The fellowship includes Hilary Davies, who specialises in quilted fabric collage to create vibrant images of the natural world; Anne Hopkins, who creates impressively life-like needle-felted animal and bird sculptures;

Helen denDulk, who wraps yarn around board and canvas to create fascinating geometrical designs; and Philippa Devine, whose expertise in botanical fabric printing enables her to create beautiful plant-based patterned fabric.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival

It’s that time of year again, folks! From the direction of Lincoln Green Lane comes the whirr of the mower, and the ‘thud thud’ of fence posts being hammered into place. Festival directors are busy chasing up paperwork, collecting articles and adverts for the programme, liaising with performers and traders, and more. So much more!

The Festival, which is one of the largest in Europe, was started in 1984 by a group of local history enthusiasts and attracts reenactors from all over the world. It takes place on the second full weekend of July every year and has only paused for the Covid 19 pandemic.

The weekend is based around The Arrivall of the forces of the houses of York and Lancaster into Tewkesbury on the 4th of May, 1471. The Arrivall culminated in a bloody and decisive battle, which saw several leading protagonists lose their heads, the death of a prince and a severe dent in the fortunes of the House of Lancaster.

Throughout the weekend the public are entertained by live mu-

sic, food, drinks, living history displays and demonstrations, giants, jugglers, jesters, dancers, rogues, scoundrels and a huge market, all free of charge. The only cost is for car parking,

from the village idiot*.

a short walk from the site, and a voluntary donation into the famous Tewkesbury Battle buckets! This year we are proud to have joined the 21st century, and you can donate securely by card. We like a silent donation!

The culmination of each day is the re-enactment of the battle itself. As the troops under the leadership of Somerset, Wenlock, Exeter, Devon, Clarence, Gloucester, The King and the Prince of Wales clash, renowned historical expert Professor Ronald Hutton provides a commentary to interpret events as they unfold- with a little help

Following this, on the Saturday evening there is a recreation of the executions of The Duke of Somerset and other leading nobles outside The Abbey, before a candle-lit sung compline, well attended by reenactors in period clothes and locals alike. This is a sincere and solemn service.

The event brings in an extra 25,000 visitors to Tewkesbury and is a vibrant and dazzling spectacle. Local schools have a chance to gain the benefit of the reenactors’ historical knowledge on schools’ Day, on the Friday. We are grateful to the re-enactors who give up their time to do this. The children’s delight is obvious, and they are a breath of fresh air!

NEW BOOK ON ‘SECRET TEWKESBURY’

A new book focusing on the less well-known aspects of Tewkes-bury’s history was published by Amberley Books on Thursday 15th June.

Written by the author and local historian David Elder, who has written two other books in Amberley’s ‘Secret’ series, the book aims to unearth the lost, forgotten or neglected facts and true stories that unveil interesting new dimensions about Tewkesbury’s history.

24 HR EMERGENCY BOARDING AND RE-GLAZING SERVICE

An efficient, friendly local business

• Glass cut to size in our workshop

• UPVC windows, doors and conservatories supplied and fitted • Greenhouse repairs

• Same day replacement of broken

Comprising eight chapters, each one heavily illustrated, the work covers core themes such as crime and punishment, trade and industry, transport, leisure and entertainment as well as more specialised ones, including some of the town’s local characters and its literary connections.

Among the local characters explored are Alan of Tewkesbury, the thirteenth-century abbot; Moses Goodere, a highly respected Quaker who lived in the town for nearly fifty years; and the miserly tanner Edmind Rudge, whose eccentricity led him to being dubbed the ‘Jemmy Wood of Tewkesbury’ after amassing a fortune of around £145,000 before he died in 1843.

In the chapter covering the town’s leisure pursuits he also covers other memorable characters, such as Samuel Osborne (c.1859-1905), the first man on record to row across the English Channel, and Gustav Hamel (1889-1914) who, memorably, once chased young boys and grazing cattle across the Ham in his Bleriot monoplane when the Hamburgborn aviator gave a flying exhibition there in 1913.

The book is now available from Alison’s Bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street (RRP £15.99).
